How can we deal with these continuing rising costs? By Toyota’s own admission the Prius name is a bigger brand in terms of green credentials even than the company itself, so expanding the Prius range is the sensible thing to do.
Of course, the roof line has been raised while trying to maintain a recognisably Prius shape, and there’s no doubting the practicality on offer. The middle row of three individual seats (specifically for Europe) move forward and back independently, firstly so that each of the three occupants can get more shoulder room, but also so the available space can be balanced between the two rows of rear seats.
Toyota spotted a gap in the market for a sevenseat, sub-100g/km car, particularly for fleet buyers like car hire companies, and the Prius+ was their attempt to fill it. The lower of the two available trim levels, T4, sits at 96g/km and is expected to take around 70% of sales ahead of the 101g/km T Spirit
The upshot is that, believe it or not, you can get seven six-footers in the Prius+, even if the rearmost passengers won’t want to be there for too long. Nevertheless the practicality and intelligent management of space is thoroughly impressive, and families will find a lot to like.
Even though it works in exactly the same way, the new model doesn’t quite use the same Hybrid Synergy Drive system as the common-or-garden five-seat Prius, because in the latter the under-boot nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack raises the load bay and means a third row of seats is not an option.
The five rear seats, which fold flat and create a level load floor, have a brilliant one-hand-one-movement operation, so parents with one arm full of wailing child can still set the seats up just how they need them. The boot lid is a little too heavy to be ideal, but it’s something you work around.
For the Prius+, the new and impressively compact lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery has been cleverly sited in the centre console in the cabin, beneath the arm rest. The boot floor has been lowered and a third row of seats added. 20
With all the seats up there’s 232 litres of space, which isn’t a great deal but can hold a reasonable amount of soft baggage. With the third row folded flat there’s a much more impressive 784 litres, which is more than enough for the vast majority of families. If the Prius+ majors on practicality, it does pretty well at in-town driving too. One of the three selectable driving modes uses electric power only as much as possible, keeping urban emissions - and fuel costs - to a minimum. The battery is small compared to that of a plug-in hybrid so its range in EV mode is only a few miles at best, but it’s surprising how well the Hybrid Synergy Drive makes that power last once you’re rolling. Things aren’t so positive out of town. The excellent ride quality from soft, comfortable suspension means that handling falls way down its list of abilities. Equally, the constantly variable transmission (CVT) gearbox that’s gives smooth and quiet running at low speeds can allow the car to feel a little strained when accelerating up to A-road pace. But despite that, the ride is still very good and fuel economy at a motorway cruise is very impressive for what amounts to a 1.8-litre petrol car. As always for a Prius, the seven-seater is crammed with kit. Barely scratching the surface the T4 model features a rear-view camera - although it’s not entirely reliable as a judge of positioning because it’s offset to one side of the number plate and gives a slightly false perspective - a panoramic roof, automatic windscreen wipers and a touchscreen infotainment system. The mid-grey interior trim is designed for an older audience. It’s totally unpretentious and will wear without looking worn. It’s practical and unassuming; perfectly suited to the Prius+ target demographic, but some will call it too bland - or worse.

The truth is that this isn’t a car designed for a mass audience. It’s built to satisfy a specific set of needs, and how much your own requirements overlap what Toyota’s engineers were working to will reflect how good the Prius+ will be for you. People who need a seven seat MPV with low running costs, oodles of practical touches and unimpeachable reliability will find living with this car an absolute joy. 22

This month, Blackpool Coastal Housing (BCH) held its fifth Community Involvement Awards to celebrate the hard work and achievements of customers across the town. Over 80 community volunteers and guests enjoyed the awards ceremony complete with entertainment and afternoon tea. The ceremony paid tribute to customers, to celebrate the dedicated contribution made by individuals, community groups and agencies in developing and strengthening local communities. Business boom in Blackpool New businesses in Blackpool are booming, thanks to £100,000 worth of loans secured for them by Blackpool Council. The Council’s Get Started scheme has helped almost 70 businesses in the town to start up in the last year, and 750 since 2007, by giving advice and support to access the money to begin trading. Companies have been helped by the Council to access funding from the Government’s Start Up Loans scheme, aimed at helping 18-30 year olds to start businesses, the NEA project for people on Job Seekers Allowance and also directly from banks.
Sharen Rusling also gets help from her husband John who helps her run S&J Fresh Five-a-Day on Lytham Road. “I lost my job in 2011,” recalls Sharen, “but I didn’t want to be unemployed. “We’ve only been open three weeks but we’ve got a nice steady client base going.” Like Susan Frary, who runs a plus-size clothing stall in Abingdon Street market, they’ve been inspired to give a small business a try.
Cllr Gary Coleman, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Urban Development, said: “I’m proud to say that this Council is fighting for the small businesses. “The Get Started scheme offers some great expert advice to anybody thinking of setting up on their own. As well as special workshops and seminars, we are also able to help people create business plans and secure them funding to begin building their companies.

Our Under 9’s Blades progressed to the Semi Finals of the Coulton Cup with a 6-1 aggregate victory against YMCA, and currently lie 5th in the league with 10 games remaining. Our Under 9’s Predators shared the points with Spirit of Youth to leave us needing 3 points from 12 to secure an excellent 3rd place in the B Division. Our Under 10’s Blades, last year’s league champions, need a point out of their last 2 games to win backto-back titles, and look forward to 9th May when they will take on YMCA at a packed Gala Field. An emphatic win against local rivals Blackpool Rangers saw our boys move into the Cup Semi-Finals where a stiffer challenge awaits from Poulton Youth. Our Under 10’s Predators exited the Plate at the Quarter Final stage, but sit well placed in Division B, with two games to go to determine whether we will finish 2nd or 3rd. In the C Division, our Under 10’s Vipers also have two games remaining and the results of their last games will determine whether we finish 3rd or 4th in the C Division. CHAMPIONS....!!! - In the Under 11’s 9-A-Side league, our Under 11’s Blades won their last league game 6-1 to take the TITLE, to cap an outstanding season. A Cup Semi-Final against Spirit of Youth Jaguars stands in the way of our boys making the Coulton Cup Final at Fleetwood Town and an opportunity to claim an unprecedented double. Our Under 11’s Predators finished their season with a 1-1 draw against Layton Clarets, and will look to continue improving the squad in the summer tournament season.
10 games will determine whether a well deserved promotion is on the cards. An incredible 12 goals in a single game from Jordan Stimpson was the highlight of the month. Our Under 15’s are in the Semi-Final of the Hogan Cup, but are struggling with player numbers as the season takes it’s toll, but a highlight of the month was WINNING the Blackpool International Cup against strong challengers from across Europe. Our Under 16’s Whites look well placed for a 2nd placed finish winning 11 of our last 13 games, with 2 draws against champions elect YMCA in between. But, a fantastic and hard fought Semi-Final victory will see our boys pit their wits against YMCA or Fleetwood Town in the Hogan Cup Final at Bloomfield Road. Our Girls Under 15’s have continued to show good form, with a couple of victories in the month. BJFF in the Community – Schools Coaching Programme Continues... Our Schools Coaching Programme continues, with our Schools Liaison Officer Steve Spencer delivering high quality coaching sessions in core curriculum time, providing after school clubs, and also offering additional after school coaching services at the BJFF sports hall (3G Astro-Turf facility). Sessions continue to be well received at Anchorsholme, Bispham Endowed, Kincraig, Manor Beach, Moor Park and St Bernadettes. We also have other coaches in place at St Teresa’s and Montgomery High School.
