A new look is promised for St Annes Pool after Sport England agreed a £500,000 grant to bring the pool into the 21st century. This is one of 38 projects across the country to share in nearly £10m of national Lottery funding.

John Cronin, YMCA executive director, added: “The team has worked very hard to ensure the centre has continued to grow from strength to strength as a flagship facility for the Fylde community and for visitors to the area.
As part of the bid process YMCA managers have developed a new proposed swimming programme which seeks to extend the range of activities and encourage wider participation in swimming across the community along with improved access into competitive pathways through partnership working with local swimming clubs and the ASA.
“We introduced the gym facility to increase the offering available at the centre. This additional investment will mean we can really develop the fabric of the building and develop an enhanced swimming programme in partnership with Lancashire Sport and the ASA to further meet people’s needs and benefit people’s lives now and in the future.”
The YMCA, which operates the Fylde Councilowned pool, has committed £100,000 to the scheme, with Fylde Council funding a further £25,000.
Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “These investments on artificial grass pitches and swimming pool changing rooms will have a big impact on sport in local communities.”

A mid-April start date has been set for work to widen the St Annes sand dunes between the coastguard station and 100 North Promenade. The Fylde Council and Lancashire Wildlife Trust project aims to improve the highly specialised dune habitat and prevent the risk of long-term flood and erosion of the coastline along the Fylde coast. One per cent of all of England’s sand dunes are between Starr Gate and Lytham Green. Much of St Annes and Lytham was originally built on dunes, meaning that only 80 hectares remains – and much of that is in poor condition. Work on the 300m stretch involves the placing of 1m-high chestnut pail fencing in front of existing dunes. The fencing will trap windblown sand to create new dunes – and reduce the natural tendency of existing dunes to creep inland – a major cause of windblown sand in the area.
“The construction of the fence will be unobtrusive but will offer a win-win situation for everyone. “The dunes will widen by between five and 30 metres and also improve the natural habitat as the current dunes are in a poor condition. “We will be writing to residents this week to tell them of the fence-building which will only last six weeks. Workers will require a compound on North Beach car-park – well away from houses – and working hours will be restricted to Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.” Pedestrian access from North Beach carpark to the beach will be unaffected. Two new pedestrian boardwalks will be created at the end of Todmorden Road and opposite 100 North Promenade. The wooden boardwalks will be lifted and moved as the new dunes form

FIRST DRIVE: TOYOTA PRIUS+

By Toyota’s own admission the Prius name is a bigger brand in terms of green credentials even than the company itself, so expanding the Prius range is the sensible thing to do.
Of course, the roof line has been raised while trying to maintain a recognisably Prius shape, and there’s no doubting the practicality on offer. The middle row of three individual seats (specifically for Europe) move forward and back independently, firstly so that each of the three occupants can get more shoulder room, but also so the available space can be balanced between the two rows of rear seats.
Toyota spotted a gap in the market for a sevenseat, sub-100g/km car, particularly for fleet buyers like car hire companies, and the Prius+ was their attempt to fill it. The lower of the two available trim levels, T4, sits at 96g/km and is expected to take around 70% of sales ahead of the 101g/km T Spirit
The upshot is that, believe it or not, you can get seven six-footers in the Prius+, even if the rearmost passengers won’t want to be there for too long. Nevertheless the practicality and intelligent management of space is thoroughly impressive, and families will find a lot to like.
Even though it works in exactly the same way, the new model doesn’t quite use the same Hybrid Synergy Drive system as the common-or-garden five-seat Prius, because in the latter the under-boot nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack raises the load bay and means a third row of seats is not an option.
The five rear seats, which fold flat and create a level load floor, have a brilliant one-hand-one-movement operation, so parents with one arm full of wailing child can still set the seats up just how they need them. The boot lid is a little too heavy to be ideal, but it’s something you work around.
For the Prius+, the new and impressively compact lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery has been cleverly sited in the centre console in the cabin, beneath the arm rest. The boot floor has been lowered and a third row of seats added. 32
With all the seats up there’s 232 litres of space, which isn’t a great deal but can hold a reasonable amount of soft baggage. With the third row folded flat there’s a much more impressive 784 litres, which is more than enough for the vast majority of families. If the Prius+ majors on practicality, it does pretty well at in-town driving too. One of the three selectable driving modes uses electric power only as much as possible, keeping urban emissions - and fuel costs - to a minimum. The battery is small compared to that of a plug-in hybrid so its range in EV mode is only a few miles at best, but it’s surprising how well the Hybrid Synergy Drive makes that power last once you’re rolling. Things aren’t so positive out of town. The excellent ride quality from soft, comfortable suspension means that handling falls way down its list of abilities. Equally, the constantly variable transmission (CVT) gearbox that’s gives smooth and quiet running at low speeds can allow the car to feel a little strained when accelerating up to A-road pace. But despite that, the ride is still very good and fuel economy at a motorway cruise is very impressive for what amounts to a 1.8-litre petrol car. As always for a Prius, the seven-seater is crammed with kit. Barely scratching the surface the T4 model features a rear-view camera - although it’s not entirely reliable as a judge of positioning because it’s offset to one side of the number plate and gives a slightly false perspective - a panoramic roof, automatic windscreen wipers and a touchscreen infotainment system. The mid-grey interior trim is designed for an older audience. It’s totally unpretentious and will wear without looking worn. It’s practical and unassuming; perfectly suited to the Prius+ target demographic, but some will call it too bland - or worse.

The truth is that this isn’t a car designed for a mass audience. It’s built to satisfy a specific set of needs, and how much your own requirements overlap what Toyota’s engineers were working to will reflect how good the Prius+ will be for you. People who need a seven seat MPV with low running costs, oodles of practical touches and unimpeachable reliability will find living with this car an absolute joy. 34

Have your say on pedlar power Members of the public are being asked to make their views known on possible legislative changes that could make it easier for small stallholders to move into town centres. The possible changes to street trading and pedlary laws are prompted by a European Services Directive that seeks to ease restrictions on trade. The current situation protects shopkeepers by classifying most pedlars as street traders who require a licence from local councils – giving councils the authority to limit their presence. The possible change would allow pedlars to trade from stalls almost anywhere, so long as their stall was less than 1m by 1m by 2m. They would, however, only stay in one spot for 10 minutes, after which they would then have to move at least 50m. They could not return to the original spot for at least three hours. Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said:
“The idea of this possible legal change is to allow people to trade with complete freedom within any part of the UK. “It raises, however, the possibility of teams of itinerant traders moving from spot to spot all the time. Bournemouth, for example, only allows pedlars five minutes – if no-one buys anything or looks at their wares in that time the pedlar has to move on. “Shopkeepers pay business rates and deserve some protection from people taking their trade away. I also worry that there may be little consumer protection for customers. “Even so, some aspects of it could be beneficial. Some small stalls may be valuable additions to town centres: it needn’t all be tasteless or lowquality goods. Any food stall would, of course, be subject to existing safety legislation. “The council’s Public Protection Committee is still considering its position for a government consultation on the matter and we will eventually let the government have our view. Fond memories after Honorary Alderman’s death
He became one of Fylde Council’s Honorary Aldermen two years ago – an honour bestowed on councillors who have served the borough for more than 20 years.
Tribute has been paid to Honorary Alderman and former Mayor George Caldwell.
He was Mayor of Fylde in 1995-6.
Alderman Caldwell, a long-serving councillor for Fylde Council’s Fairhaven ward until he stepped down in 2011, died in Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital on Saturday 30th March.
Allan Oldfield, Fylde Council’s Chief Executive, said: “Alderman Caldwell was one of Fylde Council’s highly regarded elder statesmen and all at the town hall have been saddened by this bad news.
Mr Caldwell, a bachelor, was born in Hindley, Wigan and became an apprentice to an electrical and plumbing firm in St Annes at the age of 14. He later became an academic with associations with Loughborough University and represented Fylde Council on the Court of Lancaster University. He lived on Inner Promenade, Fairhaven. More recently, in failing health, Alderman Caldwell had moved to Westholme Rest Home in St Annes.
“He was a real gentleman. He tipped his hat to those who knew him and showed great interest and erudition in all matters relating to Fylde. “He was a keen and popular freemason and his Masonic brethren will be mourning his loss. “Alderman Caldwell will be fondly remembered by the staff at the Town Hall and by the elected members who were in situ when he was still active on Fylde.”

St Annes Carnival Competitions 2013 This years St Annes Carnival takes place on the weekend of 6th and 7th July. Each year we are encouraging more of the St Annes community to enter into our Carnival competitions and there is something for everyone, whether you prefer to enter as an individual, a group or as a school. This newsletter tells you all about the competitions, how you enter, when they will be judged and who to contact if you need some more information or even get help with materials for the miniature garden competition. There are some posters attached which can be printed off. We hope you will publicise the events on your noticeboards and through your e-newsletters to get as many entries as we can for this year’s Carnival. Thank you
Competition for schools only to enter. The Poetry Competition has a birthday theme and will be for poems to be performed, by individuals, groups or even whole classes, at the final on Sunday 7th July in Ashton Gardens. Schools are invited to hold a poetry assembly and have their own X-factor style preliminary rounds to choose their three best entries for the finals. Finals will be judged by Katie Clapham from Storytellers, Inc. and a trophy and book prizes for school will go to the winners. Food festival’s top award goes to Oliver’s A first-class contribution to Fylde’s Food Festival has won two top honours for one of the area’s leading restaurants. Over 20 eateries took part in the New Year’s festival designed to boost leisure and tourism spending in an otherwise quiet time of year. But it was Oliver’s Pizza and Ice Cream Parlour on St Alban’s Road, St Annes, that landed the top honour of being Best Restaurant. Owner Oliver Sinclair won a second certificate for Fylde’s Best Starter for his Cajun Caesar salad. Viv Wood, Fylde Council’s tourism officer who staged the competition, said: “We asked customers of restaurants across Fylde to rate their meal and overall experience – and Oliver’s was a worthy winner.
“All 22 establishments that took part did a splendid job in bringing diners to Fylde. But Oliver’s was the most impressive and enthusiastic. They really embraced the festival. “Good food is now massively popular in Britain and restaurants are a major part of the leisure and tourism economy. It is a particularly vibrant section of the wider Fylde economy and that’s important for Fylde and for jobs.”

Senior manager Kathy Winstanley said: “Penalties are available and are regularly imposed for irresponsible people who fail to clean up after themselves. “We also have staff who are authorised to hand out penalties as they go about their daily duties in all parts of the borough: we will not tolerate any nonsense. “One poster shows children playing innocently – on grass that is littered with dog-dirt. The dirt is not only unpleasant it can also lead to health problems. “It is an ongoing battle that we will continue to wage.”

LYTHAM ST ANNES FOOTBALL CLUB Local youth football entered its final few weeks of the 2012/13 season after the Easter break with the LSA YMCA Football club in contention for honours. The club’s Under 16s went into this final stage with their unbeaten league record still intact and a place in the Hogan Cup semi finals. This team achieved the league and cup double last year and were hopeful of similar success. The Under 15s also clinched the league and cup last season and they too have clinched a place in the cup semi finals but were only second favouites to retain the league championship this time with Layton Clarets in the driving seat. The Under 14s claimed a place in the Hogan Plate competition whilst the Under 10s reached the Coulton Cup semi finals in the PDP 7-A-Side League.
The Under 13s were also chasing the league title but had a huge backlog of fixtures to overcome in April to achieve this. Things don’t end once the season has been completed in mid-May. Arrangements will have to be made to stage the club’s Annual Presentation Evening and the Annual General Meeting, both held on dates to be decided during June. Also,a lot of work will need to be put into the renovation of the club’s ground at Seafield Rd. The three pitches have suffered considerably during what has been the wettest period of weather ever known during the past 12 months. ‘Lozz’ Rose Secretary
