othic chic While black clothes, drapes and trick or treat accessories are only for one scary night a year, you could be brave and take inspiration from this 'spooktacular' style and really embrace the power of black for a more lasting, striking effect.

B

lack, according to interiors specialists, is back on the decor menu as we seek spaces that not only look luxurious but dramatic. Some designers are even flirting with the gothic style and featuring that ultimate haunting image, a skull, on new ranges of upholstered black furniture and wallcoverings. Black, monochrome and rich almost black-brown is a significant trend this winter agrees Fionnuala Johnston, Design Coordinator at B&Q. "Our bestsellers at the moment are bold black-based statement wallpapers with accent colours so the effect's not too dominating," she says. "Team those with a rich mix of sumptuous, luxury fabrics in different textures, or a combination of rich cream set against the dramatic black for a stunning room." For added glamour, she suggests using luxurious black velvet for throws, bedspreads or cushions, creating shine and glitter with sleek chrome lighting or black nickel lamp bases, and adding accessories such as a glossy black rug and a mixture of black and metallic effect cushions. So make this Halloween an excuse to create rooms with bewitching style by following our guide to clever design 'tricks' and choosing from our selection of interior 'treats'.

Be bold with black To create a high quality black wall, she says that experts will avoid applying black emulsion paint and instead use a base colour like a deep red or green. Then they'll layer black tinted lacquer on top so that the effect looks rich and glossy rather than dull and dense. Charlotte suggests using wallpaper rather than paint on walls, as this

House Beautiful's style editor, Charlotte Boyd gives her advice on using black in a scheme.

will add an interesting element of pattern, whereas an expanse of painted wall will result in a block of flat colour. "For a pretty floral design consider Sanderson's new A Painter's Garden collection. Grandiflora is a big floral ideal for creating a feature wall, and comes in ebony with gold, £37 a roll.

Alternatively, Rosalie, a more traditional floral in ebony with thyme, is £34 a roll," she says. B&Q's damask Zhivago wallpaper in black, £16.98 a roll would work well on wall borders or as a feature wall. TIP: paint walls in off-white or pale stone and add elements of black with curtain and upholstery fabrics.

property Rooms with spirit Decor witches who love something a little different will appreciate the witty twist taken by iconic Sixties fashion designer, Barbara Hulanicki. She's featured a repeating skull design for a wallpaper in her flock collection.

It's fun to enter into the spirit of Halloween night by indulging in fun accessories, and most of the supermarkets and high street stores have good selections to please those little witches and ghosts. Try Matalan's clever light up pumpkin faces, £15, Asda's champagne flutes whose bases resemble skeleton hands, and its gothic style chandelier, Skulls in or a Pumpkin lantern garland, £3, Midnight paper, £60 www.very.co.uk. per roll But if you're a grown up fan of the Graham black, gothic theme John Lewis has an excellent range. & Brown. I particularly like its Halloween tealight tree complete with spiders web, £15.

"I love the almost shock element that you don't instantly see the skull design unless you really look at the paper" she says Just as dramatic as Barbara's papers is the Skullduggery fabric used on chairs and lampshades by Georgina Brett Chinnery at interiors specialists, Bombarock. "We're finding people love it as a refreshing alternative to florals, especially as just one piece makes a real statement in a room. It's also popular with men who want style without fuss," she says.

Spooky style

You could make a feature with Argos' black and white chandelier candle set, £14.99, and team it with a black silhouette mantel clock, £12 from Matalan, and an Eliza Gilt mirror, £99 from John Lewis to create your own sanctuary with haunting appeal.

Black works particularly well in bedrooms where it can give a sanctuary a rich, slightly mysterious vampy feel, and Next's bedding range includes a highly desirable, Diamante black bed linen set.

Whip the egg white in a clean bowl until stiff peaks form. Whisk in the sugar a tbsp at a time and keep whisking for a couple of mins until the mixture is thick and resembles shaving foam. Gently spoon the mixture into a large freezer bag, then cut a 1.5cm hole in one of the corners. Cover a baking sheet with some baking parchment. Carefully squeeze a small circle of whipped egg white out of the bag, pulling upwards as you do to make a ghost shape. Repeat until the mixture is used up - you should get about 15 ghosts. Bake for 1 1/4 hrs until crisp. Can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days.

Finish decorating the cake: heat cream in a saucepan until just boiling. Place the dark chocolate in a large bowl and pour over the hot cream. Stir until the chocolate melts. Use a clean brush to paint a layer of chocolate over 7 rich tea finger biscuits, then set aside to cool. Pour the rest of the chocolate mixture over the cake and smooth over with a knife. Whizz the chocolate cookies, or bash in a freezer bag with a rolling pin, until small crumbs form. Sprinkle over the top of the cake. Caves Corner is one of Blackpool's best known shops, a pilgrimage point for visitors and one to be cherished by local in search of something special. Its stood on the junction of Abingdon Street and Queen Street since 1927, a reminder of a more genteel age, but moving with the times, choc-a-bloc with curious, beautiful handbags, pocket watches, collectables, board games, roulette wheels, glitz and glamour. As caves go, its a glam grotto, amidst all the grot that replaced so many quality shops. Caves now faces one of the busiest offices in Blackpool Job Centre Plus. Older staff recall a church used to stand on that spot. This part of town must have had one of the highest concentrations of churches, many still standing others with a new lease of life. Queen street’s become a foodie street and clubbers Mecca, but once the high fashion street of Blackpool. Its pivotal to any regeneration brought by Talbot Gateway. Caves has been run by David Ashworth and his sister Wendy Hanson with mum lending a hand, as resident social historian.

For most of the year, our money should work as efficiently as possible to build our savings. Now is a good time to see how money can be used to benefit charities and good causes.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY WORK FOR CHARITY harity credit cards, savings accounts and online giving probably make it easier to direct money into good causes than ever before. The credit card from the British Heart Foundation offers a £50 donation when the card is used for the first time, plus 35p per £100 spent thereafter. Spending £150 per month gives £56.30 to charity in the year, without anybody feeling a thing. The Cancer Research UK card makes a £20 donation on first use, plus 0.25% of the value of purchases thereafter. So far as building society accounts are concerned, it is interesting to see that while rates for savers have been pulverised this year, the amount which charity-linked accounts donate often holds firm.

advice website which represents independent financial advisors, chief executive Karen Barrett stresses the importance of making charity gifts tax efficient. "Nearly £1.2 billion goes to the taxman which could be easily avoided by using Gift Aid and other tax efficient methods," she says. The website advocates payroll giving (Give As You Earn) is a tax-efficient way of donating. Employees contribute a regular sum, taken from their salary by employers for a chosen charity. It means a £10 donation costs a

Any taxpayer donating to charity should make a routine of ticking the Gift Aid box, which means the taxman adds an extra 28p to every £1 donated - but millions obviously don't

The Cheshire BS Caring for Children account pays only 0.1% to savers, but retains its 1% contribution to charity. The building society accounts listed on moneyfacts.co.uk which make charity donations tend to be mainly the larger regional ones looking to give something back to local communities, plus the avowedly philanthropic Triodos Bank. finance Of course, there are ideas galore on how your money can help good causes from The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), which works with donors, companies and charities to encourage a culture of giving. They include:

Open a CAF Charity Account It was partly to boost earnings from Gift Aid that Virgin Money Giving launched as a not-for-profit, online fund-raising subsidiary of Richard Branson's empire group. It is designed to boost online giving by slashing fees and avoiding charges on Gift Aid donations. The annual subscription fee to Virgin Money Giving is £115, with £100 going to charity. Virgin claims charities using virginmoneygiving.com can boost the value of online donations by 5%-plus.

£750m of Gift Aid goes unclaimed each year a massive loss for some of the charities hard hit by recession

Although there was little evidence of charity from the bosses of Britain's biggest energy suppliers in 2009, I greatly admire the stance taken by Phil Levermore an energy expert who launched Ebico, the UK's only not-for-profit energy supplier, back in 1999. He hates the way that big suppliers make poorer households pay over the odds for their fuel, and is appalled that so many people remain in fuel poverty today, spending more than 10% of their income on energy. All of Ebico's 55,000 customers pay the same tariff, whether they pay quarterly, by monthly direct debit or with a prepayment meter. There are no standing charges either, and the company has twice been named this year in top one or two places in Which? customer satisfaction surveys. Levermore doesn't claim to be the cheapest provider, but he does promise that any surpluses will help the neediest customers and tackle fuel poverty. Only when you sign up with Ebico, I imagine, is it possible to feel a warm glow when you pay your fuel bills.

with a £100 lump sum or monthly direct debits from £10. It operates like a bank account, with payments only for charitable donations. All money held in this account receives Gift Aid automatically, which can be donated to any charity by a special cheque book, charity card or online through the CAF website.

Buy gifts from charity shops. Following the lead given by Mary 'Queen of Shops' Portas in her TV makeover of a Save the Children store, many now specialise in selling designer clothes or goodquality second-hand books. To find charity shops in your locality, visit the Association of Charity Shops website on www.charityshops.org.uk.

Give unwanted gifts to charity shops. Gift Aid can apply here too, providing that any shop which takes your gifts notes your details, and contacts you to ensure you are still a taxpayer when the donated item is sold. Then 28p can be added to each pound raised. Most shops, of course, would consider that the extra administration work is only justified on expensive items. As charities call on the services of expert retailers, and improve their websites, the choice of items which can be given as Charity Gifts gets wider. Gifts which help to support various causes can be found on www.goodgifts.org. If you don't know which charity the recipient of a gift might support, you could give CAF Charity Vouchers in denominations of £10 or £25 which can be donated to any charitable organisation in Britain. Give small batches of shares from your portfolio and you can claim full personal tax relief, and also relief on capital gains. Donating £1,000 this way could cut your tax bill by £220, or by £500 for higher-rate taxpayers.

Make your time online work for charity. Websites including www.froggybank.co.uk, www.giveortake.com and www.ushopucare.co.uk are among those which allow you to shop at larger online retailers, and pay a commission to the charity of your choice.

Get fit enough for the London Marathon Although the ballot for the 2010 race has closed, a website called Crunch offers places to anybody prepared to raise at last £1,200 for partner charities through sponsorship. See www.crunch.org.uk/ marathon.php for more information.

leep yourself well As a new study reveals that three quarters of Britain's workforce are getting less than the recommended eight hours sleep a night due to worries about job security and finances, we look at how sleep deprivation can affect health, the many conditions that can disturb a night's rest, and how to get the best sleep possible.

G

ood sleep is as vital to our wellbeing as healthy eating and exercise - but it's often the first casualty in today's hectic world. Busy people wrongly believe that it won't hurt to cut back on something which takes such a large chunk out of their packed schedules. Whatever the reason for missing out on sleep, it can lead to a whole host of health problems, aside from feeling tired and wretched. Poor sleep has been linked to increases in diabetes, obesity, heart disease, depression, and suicidal behaviour, and sleeping six hours or less a night has been shown to increase mortality. In addition,

even if you're not tired yourself, you could be killed by someone who is tired. Drivers now kill more people on Europe's roads than drunk drivers. Sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley believes the vital health and wellbeing messages about a good night's sleep are simply not getting through to the public. "Although we have a lot of health warnings about diet and exercise, the health messages around sleep are less well-made. "People see sleep as disposable. We've become so much busier these days. But decent sleep will do you more good than diet or exercise, because it's the bedrock from which you can build these healthy measures."

44 Mention LINK-Mag when contacting advertiser

If you're sleep deprived, however, other healthy measures may simply crumble around you. Aside from the fact that if you're tired, you're less likely to exercise, sleep is when muscle stress that's occurred during exercise is repaired - so lack of sleep means lack of repairs. In addition, sleep deprivation isn't good for your figure, as the more tired you are, the more you crave sugary foods. A recent study found that young men ate 22% more calories when they had four hours of sleep the night before, compared to when they slept for eight hours. So, as well as simply feeling better after a good night's sleep, your diet and exercise regimes can benefit too.

HEALTH But exactly what is a good night's sleep? We're often told the recommended amount is eight hours - yet Dr Stanley says it's not clear where the eight hours claim came from. "What's important with sleep is that you get the amount you need," he stresses. "Anywhere between three and 11 hours can be considered normal." The way to know if you're getting the right amount of sleep is simply by thinking about how you feel during the day. If you feel awake, alert, and alive, then you're probably getting enough sleep. If you feel tired, miserable and grumpy, then you probably need more. However, getting more sleep may not be as easy as it sounds. While for some people, sleep deprivation is almost a lifestyle choice, for many it's the result of stress. “In this day and age it's stress which is one of the major causes of poor sleep, because of financial worries and job security - we've also just got more things on our plate," says Dr Stanley. If it's not stress stopping you from sleeping, it could be one of the many medical conditions that affect our rest. Around 25% of the UK population are thought to suffer from some form of sleep disorder, with the most common being insomnia, sleep apnoea, cramps, restless legs and snoring.

Sleeping tips from the NHS: Establish fixed times for going to bed and waking up (and avoid sleeping in after a poor night's sleep). Try to relax before going to bed. Maintain a comfortable sleeping environment (not too hot, cold, noisy or bright). Try not to nap during the day.

It's estimated that snoring affects 3.5 million people in the UK.

These can be anything from a noisy street, thin curtains or a cat which jumps on the bed, to a snoring partner.

Many tired people afflicted by snoring and other sleep conditions will eventually visit their GP in desperation. Doctors then need to assess whether patients are suffering from a true medical problem, or are missing out on sleep due to lifestyle factors.

If lifestyle factors are eliminated when a sleep history is taken, a variety of measures may be suggested, including cognitive and behavioural therapy. As a last resort, sleeping pills may be prescribed.

Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol within six hours of going to bed. Avoid exercise within four hours of bedtime (although exercise earlier in the day is beneficial). Don't eat a heavy meal late at night. Try not to check the clock throughout the night.
