All that glitters needn't be gold with the glorious array of paint, faux finishes and clever costume jewellery available for walls. Painting walls or furniture, in metallic paint cheaply transform both spaces and pieces, says Charlotte Boyd, style editor of House Beautiful magazine. "Try giving an old dark wood console table a metallic update to really add wow factor to a hallway." Be imaginative and rummage in your jewellery box and display a cluster of pretty silver or gold costume pieces on table tops, hang strands of necklaces on walls or make a feature of them in velvet-lined picture frames.

Silver, pewter and platinum colourways can be teamed with aubergine or maroon for warmth or work well with on-trend sorbet shades such as pistachio greens, duck-egg blues, pinks and yellows.
Getting precious Get in on the metallic-act with gold and silver accessories which will give rooms an instant injection of glamour. "It's easy to overdo metallics," warns Charlotte Boyd at House Beautiful magazine. "Add a few gold or silver sequinned cushions to a sofa or bed, or perhaps group a collection of vases in different shades in front of a gold mirror to make a feature." the salad days of summer Learning how to make a terrific salad is a skill. Become a salad pro with our easy-to-follow tips and recipes. As soon as summer looms, those party invitations start plopping through the door. Suddenly you're expected to look bronzed, healthy and slim while holding a glass of fizz and not dropping your canapes. This is where the gift of salad comes in. In order to stay trim, many party-goers will live off iceberg lettuce, tomato and a Sauvignon blanc from May until September. But if this combination leaves you feeling faint, remember there's more than one way to toss a salad. Here are five basic salad recipes to get you started...
Garden Salad For the salad: 1/2 cucumber 250g cherry tomatoes 250g baby leaf mix, such as mizuna, baby chard, lollo rosso, purslane and oak-leaf lettuce
1 avocado 50g pitted black olives For the dressing: 1tsp Dijon mustard 2tbsp cider vinegar 3tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper

Serves 4
Peel and slice the cucumber and halve the tomatoes. Mix the salad leaves with the cucumber and tomatoes in a large salad bowl. Stone and peel the avocado, cut into cubes and add to the bowl with the olives. Make the dressing by whisking together the mustard, vinegar and oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad, toss carefully to combine and serve.
Greek Salad For the salad: 1/2 cucumber 4 plum tomatoes 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1/2 red onion 60g pitted olives 50g feta cheese, diced For the dressing: 4tbsp olive oil 1tbsp chopped parsley Salt and pepper

Cut the cucumber and tomatoes into 1-2cm chunks and put them in a large salad bowl. Cut the pepper flesh into thin strips and put them in the bowl with the cucumbers and tomatoes. Finely slice the red onion and add to the bowl with the olives. Make the dressing by whisking the oil and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss carefully. Transfer to serving bowls, scatter some feta evenly over each bowl and serve.

chop Salad For the salad: 1 iceberg lettuce 410g red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 avocado, peeled, stoned and diced 2 ripe tomatoes, chopped 1/2 red onion, finely diced 1tbsp chopped coriander leaves 1 jalapeno chilli (optional), finely sliced Corn chips, to garnish Sour cream (optional), to serve

For the dressing: Juice of 1 1/2 limes 3tbsp olive oil Cut the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and put them into a large salad bowl. Add the beans, avocado, tomatoes and onion with the coriander and chilli (if used). Mix all the ingredients together. Make the dressing by whisking together the lime juice and oil. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and mix lightly to combine. Garnish with lightly-crushed corn chips and serve with sour cream.
Potato Salad 1kg new potatoes 125g smoked streaky bacon 1tsp vegetable oil 6 spring onions 175ml mayonnaise Salt and pepper
Halve the potatoes and cook in lightly-salted boiling water until tender. Rinse under cold water and leave to cool. Meanwhile, slice the bacon into thin strips. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the bacon until golden, drain on kitchen paper and allow to cool. Finely slice the spring onions, reserving some for garnish. Put the potatoes, finelysliced spring onions and bacon in a large salad bowl. Gently stir in the mayonnaise. Season to taste with salt and pepper, garnish with the reserved spring onions and serve.
Chickpea and Herb Salad 100g bulgur wheat 4tbsp olive oil 1tbsp lemon juice 2tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley 1tbsp chopped mint 400g chickpeas, drained and rinsed 125g cherry tomatoes, halved 1tbsp chopped mild onion 100g cucumber 150g feta cheese Salt and pepper
Put the bulgur wheat in a heatproof bowl and pour boiling water over, just enough to cover. Set aside until the water has been absorbed. If you want a fluffier finish, transfer it to a steamer and steam for five minutes. Spread on a plate to cool. Mix together the olive oil, lemon juice, parsley and mint in a large salad bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the chickpeas, tomatoes, onion and bulgur wheat. Dice the cucumber and add to the bowl. Mix well and add the diced feta, stirring lightly to avoid breaking up the cheese. Serve immediately.

The SX4 is a cross between a small hatchback and a mini SUV. The raised driving position, lofty stance and spacious cabin all make the car quite unique.

f you want to get ahead in the car business, small is the biggest game in town. Superminis, compact hatchbacks, call them what you want, the small car sector is the one to be in.
The trade off is that there's little in the way of genuine variety. Sure, style-wise there's much to differentiate one supermini from the next, but at the end of the day you're still driving a supermini. And if you want a small car with a bit of attitude or go anywhere ability it's a case of getting something, well, bigger. Which is why cars like Suzuki's SX4 have managed to carve out a successful niche for themselves.
Presenting a noticeably more rugged face to the world while managing to retain the same footprint as a conventional supermini, the SX4s of this world offer some-thing a little different. Different yes - but also different in a good way. Choice is always welcome in the car business, but cars such as the SX4 must deliver what the marketing-speak promises. Suzuki has form in the small car market so this isn't an issue. From city cars to compact 4x4s, the Japanese firm has made a good living from this end of the business.

MOTORING The SX4 is, if you like, a cross between a small hatchback and a mini SUV. All the tell-tale clues are present: the high roofline, raised driving position, chunky styling and all -wheel drive. This latter feature might only present on one variant, but for anyone with a need for such it sure beats having to manhandle something larger on country lanes. First let's consider the front-wheel drive SX4; it's more than just a 'softroader' for the city. The raised driving position, lofty stance and spacious cabin all make perfect sense in the city where visibility is often at a premium and getting down into and up out of a regular car can be a chore - and a genuine pain for some. With the ease of use box ticked, next consider the car's performance. There's a straight-forward choice between a thoroughly revised 120 horsepower 1.6-petrol unit and a 90 horsepower 1.6-litre diesel. If you plan on racking up the miles, the diesel probably the better option.

You don't need to live at the top of a mountain to make the most of it, while it feels just at home on the motorway as it does bounding along muddy country paths. By way of a deal-breaker, for 2010 Suzuki has spruced up the car's interior, improved equipment levels and polished the car's exterior by way of more colour-coded trim. For the asking price, this is a small car the genuinely punches above its weight.

For more urban-centric motoring the petrol unit is an excellent all-rounder. Improved performance, economy and refinement have made it a more rounded proposition now, and it's also the engine used in the allwheel drive SX4. Now, this might appear like overkill, but there's a lot to be said for all-weather ability. You don't have to be stuck in snow to reap the benefit, as even wet, leaf-strewn roads have the potential to cause a problem. Also, if you happen to live or travel in rural areas, something small and economical like the SX4 can make more sense than a bulky, traditional 4x4 - why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut, after all. And the SX4 - in all-wheel drive SZ5 trim - is so easy to live with. A simple rocker switch activates the 4x4 mode, giving you the option of on-demand all-wheel drive when you lose traction, full 4x4 lock and a front-drive mode. A genuinely versatile, practical and easy to drive car, Suzuki's SX4 might appear to be a left-field choice in the

The bright pinks and purples of cascading bougainvillea, tropical cannas with big, blousey red and orange flowers plus banana plants bearing great hands of fruit underneath giant leaves all heightened the sense of the exotic. Tenerife, the land of cheap booze, 'full English' breakfasts and partying punters - a tourist hotspot sullied by overdevelopment and bad behaviour, mostly by visitors, over

TRAVEL At Sensatori, the stunning rooms, a sea of marble flooring, sparkling chandeliers, ornate fountains, designer decor and dramatic sculptures can take your breath away.
This is Thomson's third Sensatori complex, following others in Crete and Mexico - all part of the giant operator's fightback against the DIY holiday brigade. If you don't buy your holiday from Thomson, you won't get into a Sensatori. Bag a villa within its Red Level area and you get a butler and private pool of your own within your tropical garden, and an outdoor double bed under a thatched canopy for lounging near the water. At the new YHI spa in the Sensatori hotel, I drifted off as the therapist combined aromatherapy with hotstone massage to soothe aches and pains. Guests ventured into outdoor parlours for treatments, next to the infinity pool with uninterrupted ocean views. At one time Michelin stars were unheard of on the island, but they are now part of the high-end package. At the Sensatori's Michelin -starred Calima restaurant, our 12course taster menu began with delicious dry-ice cocktails and included delicacies such as foie gras, oysters and truffle cake, accompanied by fine wines, some produced locally. Chef Dani Garcia is a bit of a celebrity, and his language more polite than Gordon Ramsay.
Last year Siam Park, a water park, opened in the south, boasting the biggest artificial waves in the world of nearly 10 feet high discerning thrillseekers have surfing lessons in the wave pool after closing time. Its surrounding beach is created with tons of silky white sand imported from Portugal. We hired a private cabana within the park, with its own balcony overlooking the wave pool to allow us the luxury of a safe TV, DVD and wi-fi connection, and mini-bar as well as comfortable loungers and an outside shower. If you want a similar package for four, including entrance, fast-track queuing and limited all-inclusive deal in restaurants and bars, it costs a cool 400 euros (ÂŁ360).
Ecological measures are also being stepped up to save what is left of Tenerife's natural beauty. Nearly a decade ago, virtually anyone could - and did - take a boat from Los Cristianos to watch whales and dolphins. Many beautiful creatures were surrounded by boats, with tourists happily snapping away. Under new rules, boats must be licensed and are carefully monitored to stop whales and dolphins from becoming distressed. The marine guide on our charter said that this had driven away unscrupulous operators and improved the whales' breeding cycles.

LINK-Sport Poulton Town FC – Girls Team The current PTFC Girls Team were formed following a successful local schools 5-a-side tournament organised by Wyre Borough Council, and hosted by Poulton Town FC, to select a school team to represent Wyre in the 2005 Lancashire Games. The girls enjoyed playing so much that the Club were able to recruit a sufficient number, from different local schools to form a new team. This is not, however, the first time the Club has had a Girls Team. Back in November 1999, under the name of Poulton St. John’s Youth FC before the amalgamation with the Poulton Town FC adult club, an Under-12 Girls team was formed which played in the LFA League for 2 seasons from 2000/01. Our current team started as Under-12s in Season 2005/06 and played in the Lancashire FA Girls League for 3 seasons before moving to the West Lancashire Girls League where they play now, 2009/10 season, as Under 16s. League Performance When our current team was created, most of the girls had not played competitive club football or been formally coached in basic skills before so it was always going to be a challenge. This challenge was heightened by the only league being available to us, the LFA League, containing very good experienced teams such Blackpool FC, Preston North End FC and Burnley FC. Whilst we lost all 17 games, conceding 253 goals and only scoring 8 in the process, the performances show a marked improvement during the season as the girls became accustomed to competitive matches and improved their ability and fitness through regular training. However, the real bonus was the attitude of the 15 girls involved – regardless of the results they maintained their enthusiasm for, and commitment to, each other, the Club and the game and had a good laugh as well! At first glance 2006/07 was an even worse season – losing all 23 games and conceding 323 goals with just 7 scored. However, 22 girls had been involved during the season and if anything their attitude was even better. It must have been hard to maintain enthusiasm and commitment when everyone expects you to get beaten but these girls did. Improvements were being made – defeats were now in the teens rather than twenties of the year before and we narrowly lost one game only 1-0. The following season, 07/08, saw further improvement with scores against reducing further, more goals being scored and, on the 3rd November 2007, our first win – 2-0 away at Birchwood with two goals from striker Lizzie Hermolle. This helped us to put in good performances against the likes of Manchester City and Bolton but long periods without matches prevented us building on this good work. We also suffered from a shrinking squad – down to only 12 at the end of the season – and players being unavailable, most notably against a very good Burnley when we had to play 11-a-side with only 7 players. The 7 girls who played that day were magnificent and I was very proud of them all. In 08/09 we joined the West Lancashire Girls League, making the decision to play 9v9 games against established teams from Liverpool, Skelmersdale, Warrington, Lancashire and even Bispham. The level of competition was much better
suited to us and the games were much more enjoyable for everyone. All the girls improved with every game – many opposition managers commented how much better we were in return matches. Results were usually close, with one or two exceptions, both for and against and we won 4 games and even drew one. 09/10 has been our best season ever – in terms of results, performances and enjoyment. With a squad of 15 players, many of whom have jobs and other commitments at weekends, we are currently 5th (out of 13) and have even spent several weeks on top of the league. The girls have maintained their enthusiasm and commitment and have now started to show their ability and understanding of the game. They are no longer considered pushovers, taking points off well established teams and making the best teams work hard for what they get. Striker Lizzie Hermolle has already scored 24 goals this season with 5 games left to play whilst at the other end the goalkeepers and defence have been awarded Girl of the Match on 10 occasions – with Katie Murray picking up 4 of these herself. The commitment of all these players cannot be overstated – these are young women with demands on their time from family, friends, school, other sports and hobbies, part-time jobs and even shopping but they consistently turn up for training and matches, give 100% every time and enjoy themselves. I cannot praise them highly enough and they are a credit to themselves and their families. In June 2009, in recognition of how they themselves started playing football, those players that could helped the Club host a local primary schools Girls Football Tournament. This was a very successful event with representatives from Wyre BC and Lancashire FA being involved. Funding Our first kit was purchased thanks to a Football Foundation kit grant. All the girls pay weekly training subs which allows us to hire winter training facilities and to purchase equipment. Hermolle Associates Ltd. kindly funded a replacement kit and jackets in 08/09 which ensures the girls are always well presented at games.
