Brighten up your home

colour

with Put on your sunglasses because today's rooms should be splashed with vibrant colour, otherwise they'll be sad and dated. Get clued up on colour with our guide.

C

olour is back in fashion but even if you're immune to its dĂŠcor potential you might be won over by its power to change your mood. Just as the sight of sunny blue skies or vistas of green fields outdoors may cheer and soothe us, that same effect can be echoed inside our homes by using similar shades for walls or furnishings. "Choosing the right colour palette for your rooms is a vital part of creating a home," says author, Vinny Lee, who reveals the psychology of colour and gives practical guidance on choosing shades in her new book, The Colourful Home.

6

Go for green Green has many hues and this year zingy lime greens are on trend. "Lime green is a bright, zesty colour that provides an eye-catching background to black and chrome and colourful accessories," says Vinny. "Olive green, traditionally the colour of peace, blends well with a natural palette using woods and brown, ochre and yellow shades. But check out a colour swatch in natural and artificial light as it can look predominantly green by day but muddy in electric light."

TOP TIP Dark green can be used to dramatic effect in a candlelit dining room or other areas used mostly in the evening. In a bathroom, it can give a feeling of enthusiasm and brightness to preparations at the start of a day.

Vibrantly red

Follow Vinny's guide to colourful rooms...

Red never fails to have an impact but it's a powerful colour and care should be taken that it doesn't overwhelm especially in a small space. "Although red brings drama and excitement to a room, too much pure or undiluted red can promote feelings of overheating and anxiety," says Vinny. "It makes a good highlight colour though and can be effective for a focal point such as a chimney breast, in alcoves, or for a statement piece of furniture."

Red: "This hot, emotional colour is associated with energy, passion and desire," says Vinny.

The power of colour

Exposure to it is thought to induce physical changes, such as speeding up the metabolism, which may help improve poor circulation and raise energy levels.

TOP TIP If you paint a wall in red and it is opposite a window, the natural light will help to tone the shade down, whereas less light will make the chosen shade appear deeper.

Zesty is pre yellow one of th dicted to be e colours most popular fo 2010 as r interiors in it's with p credited cheerfuromoting lnes positiv s and ity.

Yellow: Is associated with joy, happiness, intellect and energy. Blue: Traditionally associated with masculinity, this colour is believed to have the effect of slowing the metabolism and blood pressure and producing a feeling of calm. Green: Green links to nature and symbolises freshness, abundance, harmony and growth, and it's reputed to have healing powers. Purple: Light purple is associated with romance and nostalgia, while dark purple has royal connotations of wealth and solidarity, but may also be connected with feelings of sadness.

Cool blues

Passion for purples

Blues evoke images of bright skies or seaside landscapes. They can give a fresh feel for a bathroom and light blues particularly may suit bedrooms especially those for children. "Blues have a calming effect and are refreshing, but they can create a feeling of coldness, which could make a room feel depressing," warns Vinny. "So choose your shade carefully, and test it out in different lights. Pin up a blue rug or throw on a wall and gauge your reaction to it over a week or so."

Plums and purples can give an injection of richness and warmth to rooms "Purple is said to be a good colour with which to decorate a space where contemplation or meditation is to take place," says Vinny. Purple and black is a strong and striking combination and when combined with chrome, these shades can be used to create Art Deco period style. Light purple partners well with dark woods such as mahogany and cherry wood.

Orange: Orange is a vigorous and vital colour, which represents readiness, enthusiasm and happiness and is a stimulating colour.

FORD FOCUS ECONETIC STOP-START The new Econetic Focus offers the right mix of characteristics and qualifies for the lowest road tax band.

Eco friendly

T

here's no point in beating around the bush. The big news from Ford is that the new Econetic Focus equipped with a Stop-Start system produces 99g/km CO2. That means that it qualifies for the lowest road tax band, costing the owner nothing per year. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Somewhat confusingly the other big news is that there is no other big news. Major changes have taken place out of sight but, as far as the rest of the model goes, it's business as usual. That is very good news indeed as, until recently, the Ford Focus was the best selling car in the UK. For this to be the case it clearly offers the right mix of characteristics; tampering with the recipe too much would be a bad idea. It's worth noting that it was an internal power struggle.

The Focus was deposed by the Ford Fiesta. Smaller but cheaper, more efficient and offering a more attractive deal for many under the scrappage scheme - these factors surely helped knock the Focus from top spot. The new Econetic models claw some of that ground back, without sacrificing the space and creature comforts that car buyers in their thousands have come to expect from the class-leading B-segment hatchback. Based on the popular Zetec model there has been little scrimping on equipment or trim. Dual zone air-con, electric front windows and electric mirrors are standard fit. Alloys wheels, sat-nav and parking sensors can all be specified. In fact the only option not carried over from the Zetec model is the heated front windscreen.

embers are a familiar sight in the area, especially when collecting in the Square for our Santa Appeal or for other World disasters. The residents are always very supportive and give generously. The December 2009 collections were boosted by our replica of Thomas the Tank Engine, which stood in the Square on each of our collections and drew the admiration of many children, not to mention their parents! The replica is towable by a small car and has full electrics. We intend to take it out in The Poulton Gala and other events in the area during the year. We are happy to make “Thomas available to local charity events and fundraisers to boost interest, in exchange for a small donation towards our good work. Poulton In Bloom

T

he Poulton Market Town Initiative has, for the second year, entered the town in the Britain In Bloom competition. In 2009, the Market Square was the central focus for our entry and was filled with colourful beds, tubs and hanging baskets, with manger baskets along the church wall. Other projects were the station, Elizabeth Court housing development, St Chad’s Church and the Methodist Church. Poulton won merit awards for three of its projects. We would like to improve on last year’s entry and hope to enlist as much support as we can. Posters will be placed around the town with details. Please join us if you can or help by keeping the town litter-free and well cared for. For further details, contact Julie Barlow on 01253 887282.

YOUR GARDEN CAN HELP SAVE THE

BUTTERFLY

Attracting wildlife to your garden is still on the agenda of top designers, as horticultural shows are demonstrating this year – with butterflies very much in the picture.

A good garden might be visited by 22 species of butterfly and hundreds of different moths each year, depending on where you live. Yet three-quarters of the 59 resident butterfly species that remain in Britain are in decline, including the most common ones: the large white, small white, red admiral, peacock and small tortoiseshell.

As certain butterfly species decline, including the High Brown Fritillary, Wood White, Duke of Burgundy and Pearl Bordered Fritillary, exhibitors at Chelsea Flower Show have been promoting plants and habitats to help them. Show gardens displayed 'butterfly mounds' and plantings of nectar-rich, traditional annual bedding plants such as nemesia and cherry-pie plant (heliotropium) to attract hoverflies and butterflies.

24 Mention LINK-Mag when contacting advertiser

Now PlantforLife, an initiative run by the Horticultural Trades Association to help people make the most of their gardens, has teamed up with environmental charity Butterfly Conservation to launch a public awareness campaign to encourage people to attract butterflies into their garden.

gardening Butterfly Conservation president Sir David Attenborough said earlier this year: "Almost unbelievably, much of Britain's countryside is a no-go area for many favourite butterflies. Habitat has been ploughed up or become overgrown. Anybody who's been for a country walk recently will tell you butterflies are a rarity. Scientists fear that in some areas we're entering a post-butterfly era."

In late summer and autumn some species need to build up their reserves in preparation for winter, so benefit from late-summer bloomers including buddleia, sedum, ivy, Michaelmas daisy, mint, scabious and thyme.

The campaigners have now produced a guide, Making Your Garden Flutter, which offers tips to help preserve these creatures. Butterflies love heavily-scented flowers, so plant Sedum spectabile and Verbena bonariensis to attract them into your garden. Nectar-rich plants such as

High Brown Fratillary butterfly

Early flowers are great for butterflies just emerging from hibernation, such as aubrieta, bluebell, clover, forget-me -not, pansy, primrose and wallflower. Creating a wild area within your garden can encourage butterfly species to breed. Simply allow grasses and wild flowers which are already there to grow, or supplement them with extra plants. In the first year of growing the wild area, cut it several times to allow the wild flowers a chance against other competitive grasses. Making Your Garden Flutter can be picked up from participating garden centres and nurseries or downloaded free from www.plantforlife.info/butterflies.

cowslip (Primula veris), bugle (Ajuga reptans), lavender and honesty flowers will also encourage them in. Many good nectar plants are hardy, perennial and easy to grow.

Further general Information is available on www.butterfly-conservation.org/

Grow flowers in sunny, sheltered areas, as butterflies will seek out the warmest parts of your garden. Create shelter for butterflies by planting shrubs and small trees such as common honeysuckle around the edges of your plot, but make sure your flower beds remain in full sunlight. Keep a good variety of flowers which are available from early spring to autumn in your garden. Plants such as Buddleia davidii 'Harlequin' will give butterflies the fuel they need to keep them airborne.

Poulton Town f.c

LINK-Sport Poulton Town FC – Girls Team The current PTFC Girls Team were formed following a successful local schools 5-a-side tournament organised by Wyre Borough Council, and hosted by Poulton Town FC, to select a school team to represent Wyre in the 2005 Lancashire Games. The girls enjoyed playing so much that the Club were able to recruit a sufficient number, from different local schools to form a new team. This is not, however, the first time the Club has had a Girls Team. Back in November 1999, under the name of Poulton St. John’s Youth FC before the amalgamation with the Poulton Town FC adult club, an Under-12 Girls team was formed which played in the LFA League for 2 seasons from 2000/01. Our current team started as Under-12s in Season 2005/06 and played in the Lancashire FA Girls League for 3 seasons before moving to the West Lancashire Girls League where they play now, 2009/10 season, as Under 16s. League Performance When our current team was created, most of the girls had not played competitive club football or been formally coached in basic skills before so it was always going to be a challenge. This challenge was heightened by the only league being available to us, the LFA League, containing very good experienced teams such Blackpool FC, Preston North End FC and Burnley FC. Whilst we lost all 17 games, conceding 253 goals and only scoring 8 in the process, the performances show a marked improvement during the season as the girls became accustomed to competitive matches and improved their ability and fitness through regular training. However, the real bonus was the attitude of the 15 girls involved – regardless of the results they maintained their enthusiasm for, and commitment to, each other, the Club and the game and had a good laugh as well! At first glance 2006/07 was an even worse season – losing all 23 games and conceding 323 goals with just 7 scored. However, 22 girls had been involved during the season and if anything their attitude was even better. It must have been hard to maintain enthusiasm and commitment when everyone expects you to get beaten but these girls did. Improvements were being made – defeats were now in the teens rather than twenties of the year before and we narrowly lost one game only 1-0. The following season, 07/08, saw further improvement with scores against reducing further, more goals being scored and, on the 3rd November 2007, our first win – 2-0 away at Birchwood with two goals from striker Lizzie Hermolle. This helped us to put in good performances against the likes of Manchester City and Bolton but long periods without matches prevented us building on this good work. We also suffered from a shrinking squad – down to only 12 at the end of the season – and players being unavailable, most notably against a very good Burnley when we had to play 11-a-side with only 7 players. The 7 girls who played that day were magnificent and I was very proud of them all. In 08/09 we joined the West Lancashire Girls League, making the decision to play 9v9 games against established teams from Liverpool, Skelmersdale, Warrington, Lancashire and even Bispham. The level of competition was much better

suited to us and the games were much more enjoyable for everyone. All the girls improved with every game – many opposition managers commented how much better we were in return matches. Results were usually close, with one or two exceptions, both for and against and we won 4 games and even drew one. 09/10 has been our best season ever – in terms of results, performances and enjoyment. With a squad of 15 players, many of whom have jobs and other commitments at weekends, we are currently 5th (out of 13) and have even spent several weeks on top of the league. The girls have maintained their enthusiasm and commitment and have now started to show their ability and understanding of the game. They are no longer considered pushovers, taking points off well established teams and making the best teams work hard for what they get. Striker Lizzie Hermolle has already scored 24 goals this season with 5 games left to play whilst at the other end the goalkeepers and defence have been awarded Girl of the Match on 10 occasions – with Katie Murray picking up 4 of these herself. The commitment of all these players cannot be overstated – these are young women with demands on their time from family, friends, school, other sports and hobbies, part-time jobs and even shopping but they consistently turn up for training and matches, give 100% every time and enjoy themselves. I cannot praise them highly enough and they are a credit to themselves and their families. In June 2009, in recognition of how they themselves started playing football, those players that could helped the Club host a local primary schools Girls Football Tournament. This was a very successful event with representatives from Wyre BC and Lancashire FA being involved. Funding Our first kit was purchased thanks to a Football Foundation kit grant. All the girls pay weekly training subs which allows us to hire winter training facilities and to purchase equipment. Hermolle Associates Ltd. kindly funded a replacement kit and jackets in 08/09 which ensures the girls are always well presented at games.
