Be imaginative and rummage in your jewellery box and display a cluster of pretty silver or gold costume pieces on table tops, hang strands of necklaces on walls or make a feature of them in velvet-lined picture frames.

f you want to get ahead in the car business, small is the biggest game in town. Superminis, compact hatchbacks, call them what you want, the small car sector is the one to be in.
The trade off is that there's little in the way of genuine variety. Sure, style-wise there's much to differentiate one supermini from the next, but at the end of the day you're still driving a supermini. And if you want a small car with a bit of attitude or go anywhere ability it's a case of getting something, well, bigger. Which is why cars like Suzuki's SX4 have managed to carve out a successful niche for themselves.

Presenting a noticeably more rugged face to the world while managing to retain the same footprint as a conventional supermini, the SX4s of this world offer some-thing a little different. Different yes - but also different in a good way. Choice is always welcome in the car business, but cars such as the SX4 must deliver what the marketing-speak promises. Suzuki has form in the small car market so this isn't an issue. From city cars to compact 4x4s, the Japanese firm has made a good living from this end of the business.

MOTORING The SX4 is, if you like, a cross between a small hatchback and a mini SUV. All the tell-tale clues are present: the high roofline, raised driving position, chunky styling and all -wheel drive. This latter feature might only present on one variant, but for anyone with a need for such it sure beats having to manhandle something larger on country lanes. First let's consider the front-wheel drive SX4; it's more than just a 'softroader' for the city. The raised driving position, lofty stance and spacious cabin all make perfect sense in the city where visibility is often at a premium and getting down into and up out of a regular car can be a chore - and a genuine pain for some. With the ease of use box ticked, next consider the car's performance. There's a straight-forward choice between a thoroughly revised 120 horsepower 1.6-petrol unit and a 90 horsepower 1.6-litre diesel. If you plan on racking up the miles, the diesel probably the better option.

By way of a deal-breaker, for 2010 Suzuki has spruced up the car's interior, improved equipment levels and polished the car's exterior by way of more colour-coded trim. For the asking price, this is a small car the genuinely punches above its weight.

For more urban-centric motoring the petrol unit is an excellent all-rounder. Improved performance, economy and refinement have made it a more rounded proposition now, and it's also the engine used in the allwheel drive SX4. Now, this might appear like overkill, but there's a lot to be said for all-weather ability. You don't have to be stuck in snow to reap the benefit, as even wet, leaf-strewn roads have the potential to cause a problem. Also, if you happen to live or travel in rural areas, something small and economical like the SX4 can make more sense than a bulky, traditional 4x4 - why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut, after all. And the SX4 - in all-wheel drive SZ5 trim - is so easy to live with. A simple rocker switch activates the 4x4 mode, giving you the option of on-demand all-wheel drive when you lose traction, full 4x4 lock and a front-drive mode. A genuinely versatile, practical and easy to drive car, Suzuki's SX4 might appear to be a left-field choice in the

f you’ve walked past Thornton Methodist Church recently you may well have wondered what on earth is going on and why the Church is closed. The good news is that these are very exciting times for the Church, its members and our local community. After almost two hundred years, the magnificent Chapel is receiving a facelift to transform it into a stunning, versatile building for the benefit of Thornton as a whole. Once re-opened, the Chapel will be able to open its doors to a wide range of activities, creating a central and modern events venue.
On Friday 21st May, the new Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Russell Forsyth, the President of the Methodist Conference, David Gamble and the Chair of the District, Revd. Stephen Poxon, called in to see how work was progressing and all were very impressed and excited about the project

Garden Salad For the salad: 1/2 cucumber 250g cherry tomatoes 250g baby leaf mix, such as mizuna, baby chard, lollo rosso, purslane and oak-leaf lettuce
1 avocado 50g pitted black olives For the dressing: 1tsp Dijon mustard 2tbsp cider vinegar 3tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper

Serves 4
Peel and slice the cucumber and halve the tomatoes. Mix the salad leaves with the cucumber and tomatoes in a large salad bowl. Stone and peel the avocado, cut into cubes and add to the bowl with the olives. Make the dressing by whisking together the mustard, vinegar and oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad, toss carefully to combine and serve.
Greek Salad For the salad: 1/2 cucumber 4 plum tomatoes 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1/2 red onion 60g pitted olives 50g feta cheese, diced For the dressing: 4tbsp olive oil 1tbsp chopped parsley Salt and pepper
Cut the cucumber and tomatoes into 1-2cm chunks and put them in a large salad bowl. Cut the pepper flesh into thin strips and put them in the bowl with the cucumbers and tomatoes. Finely slice the red onion and add to the bowl with the olives. Make the dressing by whisking the oil and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss carefully. Transfer to serving bowls, scatter some feta evenly over each bowl and serve.

Thornton Ladies’ Club: 2 year Anniversary meeting Having recovered from our ‘Royal Tea Party’ and the successful cup cake making, led by Stella of ‘Home Maid by Stella’, the ladies decided to lose some of the calories gained by walking along the river from Stanah Country Park to the Thornton Lodge for our May session. This culminated in the need to renew our energy levels with an excellent meal and for some, the biggest pudding to share ever! We had a quiz to complete en route and all 21 ladies enjoyed the customary chin wag, gossip and news updates as befits such an evening. June has a local theme and we will be finding out about events, activities and benefits that are available to local ladies. We will also have a short quiz to test just how knowledgeable you ladies are about your local area. All ladies are welcome. Refreshments start at 7.30 – 8.00pm and meeting session lasts from 8.00 – 9.00pm. Location: St John’s Church Hall, Stanah. Councillor Roger Berry, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership, said: "Cleansweeps are an effective way of restoring pride and confidence to the neighbourhood and the project was received positively in Thornton.

Operation Cleansweep is a Wyre Community Safety Partnership initiative which gets organisations and communities working together to clamp down on grime and crime in their neighbourhoods. A week of action saw youngsters from three primary schools - Stanah, Sacred Heart and Thornton Primary - join in litter picks. Between them they collected 30 sacks of rubbish from pavements, kerbs and grass verges around their school grounds.

T.C.F.C TRIPLE TRIUMPH FOR T.C.F.C Following on from Thornton Cleveleys FC Seniors first team clinching promotion to the West Lancs Premier League last month two of T.C.F.C Junior teams have followed suit by winning their respective leagues too. Andy Hulme guided his Under 13s team to promotion to the Blackpool and District A division by winning 14 of their 16 games with 1 draw and only one defeat. A massive goal haul of 85 goals and 30 conceded pays testament to what a fantastic season all the squad have had after a turbulent season during their Under 12s season. Manager Andy Hulme commented “. As a parent who has watched a lot of these lads grow up together before I became the team manager it has made me even more proud to be involved with them. I don’t want to praise any member of the squad individually as this season was a real team effort which hopefully we can carry through to next season and at least hold our own in a league we feel that we rightly belong. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thanks to all players, parents and staff of T.C.F.C U13’s for their support and I am already looking forward to another great season as Under14s.
Not to be out done Kevin Hoggarth and his team of Under 9s ended their inaugural competitive Poulton and District Primary League season as league champions. Playing 7 –a – side football with the two teams combining their results the Red team and White team mustered 22 wins, 4 draws and 6 defeats from 32 games between them. Team manager Kevin was only too keen to summarize what turned out to be a fantastic season “A good start to the season was soon capped with good results against the sides that everyone knew was going to be competing for the league title. Around the start of December the league took a back seat to the cup and a preliminary round against the then league leaders. Victory was achieved and several rounds later a semi final appearance in the Coulton Cup; A competitive game ensued and it went all the way to penalties. The opposition dealt with the pressure a little better than our boys and went through to not only make the final, but win the cup so it was no disgrace losing to the eventual winners.The loss hurt the TCFC under 9 players and proved to be the spur to some great results in the run in at the end of the season. In the long run-in the league proved to be filled with competitive sides and points were dropped by all the leading contenders, a final game showdown was avoided and TCFC were Poulton and District 2009 / 10 league champions with one fixture to spare and an eventual 9 point winning margin”. Kevin was also keen to praise all who had helped make their first season such a positive one “A massive thanks has to go the all at TCFC who have helped, particularly my assistant managers and coaches. The boys parents have been fantastic in their support both on and off the pitch and I must say thanks to opposition managers and coaches who have also helped me through my first season as a manager in junior football. The final word, thanks and huge well done must go to each and every player of the 2009 / 10 TCFC Under 9's, who have ALL contributed to a tremendous season. Well done boys, bring on next season.
