WELCOME TO YOUR

POULTON LE FYLDE & GARSTANG MAGAZINE 18,500 Copies Per Month Summer Holidays are here! The best months of the year – Yippee! Time to get away, or to visit all the many local attractions, parks, beaches and much more… Get yourself out there and support the local economy. Or, if you must stop at home because something needs doing, then we can help take care of that by introducing you to many local businesses within our magazines. We have a stack of local events for August in our What’s On pages. Too many to mention here – but there’s something for everyone, I’m sure. If you have an open or community event coming up, you can advertise it for free in our next edition. Did you know we have a sister company called Vegan Print? It’s where printing doesn’t cost the earth, and where you could have 5,000 A5 D/S full colour flyers printed for just £80. If there’s something you would like to see in the magazine then please do get in touch, as we are always looking at ways to improve on what we can offer. After all, it is our readers who have made LINK-MAG the Number One local magazine… Don’t forget our magazines are also online every month at www. link-mag.co.uk. Well done to last month’s winner: Christine Knott for the Where Am I? Competition – £50 is on its way.

Still rocking on with Tommy A new play written by Bobby Ball is coming to the Marine Hall in Fleetwood later this year, with an all-star cast including Bobby, Tommy Cannon, Stu Francis, Johnny Casson and Linda Nolan.

A

unique comedy play, The Dressing Room gives the audience a sneak preview into life behind the scenes. Set backstage in the dressing room, each act waits their turn to be called to stage. One by one they make their performance before returning to the hub of activity where the gossip and misunderstandings continue. Talking about the show, Bobby Ball commented; ‘I’m really excited to bring this show to Fleetwood. I love to be out on stage and I’m really happy to be working with such a great bunch of performers. The show is a part variety, part play – or “playriety” as I like to call it! The audience gets to watch each star perform their own variety act as well as see the little things you don’t usually get to see that go on back stage – the gossip, what we think of the audience, how we think the show is going … and lots more. It’s a new idea, something that hasn’t been done before and we are all very much looking forward to it.’

Bobby Ball and Tommy Cannon arriving for the British Soap Awards 2013

The Dressing Room is at Marine Hall, Fleetwood on Friday 23 October, at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now at £15, with concessions at £13. To book call 01253 887693 or book online at www. marinehall.co.uk

Summer Cooking

Beautiful Berries This wonderfully substantial warm salad has a sweet and sharp BerryJewel raspberry dressing that brings it to life. Although it takes a long time to get the lamb meltingly tender it is almost entirely hands off - a great dish to get started in the oven before you go for a weekend walk. Serves 6-8 What you will need For the lamb 1 tbsp olive oil 4 large cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp cumin seeds, roughly ground tsp dried thyme 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp smoked paprika salt & freshly ground black pepper 2kg bone-in lamb shoulder 2 x 400g tins chickpeas, drained & rinsed to serve 235g salad spinach, washed & well drained 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 150g pecans For the dressing 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 100ml water 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp runny honey Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil with the garlic, cumin, thyme, cinnamon and smoked paprika and season generously with salt and freshly 32

ground black pepper. Using a sharp knife, pierce 1 centimeter deep holes all over the lamb - this will help the spice flavour to get deep inside the meat. Rub the marinade all over the lamb, pushing inside the holes you have made. Place the lamb in a large baking tray, cover with cling film and set aside to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours, or overnight in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/130ºC fan/gas 2. Remove and discard the cling film and pour 200ml cold water into the roasting tin. Cover tightly with foil and cook in the oven for 5 hours it won’t need checking or turning so it’s fine to leave it undisturbed. After the lamb has had its 5 hours

cooking, remove from the oven and discard the foil. Increase the oven temperature to 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 4. Using a large metal spoon, spoon off and discard as much fat as possible providing you don’t stir the sauce it will be floating on top. Stir the chickpeas through the remaining juices, and return to the oven, uncovered, for a further hour. Whilst the lamb is in the oven for the final hour, make the dressing by placing all the ingredients into a small saucepan. Set over a medium high heat and bring up to the boil. Boil steadily for about 5 minutes until the BerryJewel raspberries have broken right down and you are left with a shiny, deep coloured sauce. Taste to check the seasoning, adding salt and pepper as desired and a little more honey if it is too sharp. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips and set aside to cool. Toast the pecans in a dry frying pan until they are deep golden brown and smell lovely and nutty. Tip onto a board and roughly chop. Set aside. After the final hour in the oven, take the lamb out and transfer to a large plate or board. Using 2 forks, flake the meat into bite sized pieces. To serve, divide the spinach leaves between individual plates and scatter over the BerryJewel raspberries and pecans. Spoon the shredded lamb and some chickpeas over the top and drizzle on a little dressing. Serve the rest of the dressing alongside in a small jug.

Warm salad of Middle Eastern pulled lamb and chickpeas with BerryJewel Raspberries

Persian Jeweled Rice with BerryJewel Raspberries, Walnuts and Parsley Serves 6 as a side dish Based on the classic Persian dish, Javaher Polow, this fruity rice is truly fit for a king. It makes a great side dish for a spicy stew or a succulent roast chicken. The buttery golden crust that develops on the bottom of the pan is absolutely delicious. For the rice 300g basmati rice A generous pinch saffron threads 150g dried cranberries 2 tbsp olive oil 60g unsalted butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 cinnamon stick 1 tsp cardamon pods, bruised with the flat of a knife 1 tsp cumin seeds Salt & freshly ground black pepper To serve 100g walnuts, roughly chopped 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries A generous bunch of parsley, chopped Finely grated zest from 1 orange 1 garlic clove, very finely chopped Method Put the rice in a sieve and rinse under cold running water. Tip into a bowl and cover well with cold water. Set aside to soak for 1 hour. Add the saffron to a small heatproof glass and cover with 2 tablespoons of boiling water, then set aside to soak. Add the cranberries to a small heatproof bowl and cover in boiling water, set aside to soak. Once the rice, saffron and cranberries are halfway through their soaking time, add the oil and half the butter to a deep, preferably nonstick, frying pan and set over a low heat. When the butter has melted, add the onion, cinnamon, cardamon and cumin and fry gently for 30 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised, then turn off the heat. Drain the rice

and put it in a large saucepan. Pour over boiling water so it comes a generous 3 centimeters above the rice and set over a medium high heat. Boil for 3 minutes, then drain and rinse under cold running water to cool and drain well. The rice will have started to cook but will still have plenty of bite and the grains will not be fluffy. Stir the cooled rice through the onions in the frying pan, along with the saffron and soaking water, and the cranberries and their soaking water. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, stirring well, then dot the surface of the rice with the remaining butter. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, make 5-6 holes through the rice all the way to the bottom of the pan - this helps it to steam evenly. Tear off a sheet of baking paper, scrunch it up under running water, shaking off the excess, then lay snugly over the surface of the rice. Cover tightly with a layer of foil and set over a very low heat. Cook, undisturbed, for 40 minutes, after which time the rice will be cooked and fluffy and a delicious buttery crust will have developed on the bottom. Whilst the rice is cooking, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan until golden and smelling nutty. Tip into a bowl and stir through the BerryJewel raspberries, parsley, orange zest and garlic. Set aside. Once the rice is ready, remove and discard the paper. Lightly fork through the walnut, BerryJewel raspberry and parsley mixture and pile the rice onto a warmed serving dish. Scrape the lovely crunchy caramelised rice bits from the base of the pan and sprinkle over the top. Serve immediately.

BerryJewel Raspberry Fool with Almond Toffee Shards and Whole Raspberries Serves 6 This is a classic raspberry fool with a bit of a twist. Shards of crisp almond toffee are a great crunchy contrast to the soft creaminess of fool.

For the almond toffee 375g caster sugar 75g golden syrup 35g butter 50ml cold water 75g blanched whole almonds, roughly chopped ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp fine salt For the fool 2 x 225g punnets BerryJewel raspberries 300ml double cream 300g Greek yoghurt Method Start by making the toffee. Line a baking sheet with a non-stick silicone mat or piece of non-stick baking parchment. Set aside. Add the sugar, syrup, butter and water to a large saucepan (the toffee will bubble up and at least double in volume whilst cooking). Set over a low heat and stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Turn the heat up to medium and bring up to the boil. Boil, uncovered, for 7-10 minutes until a little teaspoon of the mixture turns into a hard ball when dropped in a glass of cold water. Start testing after 7 minutes, and keep on boiling until it is ready - it may take a little less or longer, depending on the depth and width of the pan you choose. If you are using a sugar thermometer it will read 138ºC. Turn off the heat and quickly stir through the almonds, vanilla and salt then pour onto the prepared baking sheet. Set aside to go cold - about 30 minutes. Once hard, break into thin shards using a strong sharp knife. This makes about double what you need for this recipe, but it stores well in an airtight tin for at least a week. To make the fool, add one punnet of BerryJewel raspberries to a bowl and mash up with a fork. Pour the cream into a large mixing bowl and whisk, either by hand or with an electric whisk, until it forms soft billowy peaks. Gently fold the Greek yogurt through using a large metal spoon until well combined. Then pour in the mashed raspberries and lightly fold. Finally fold through half the punnet of whole BerryJewel raspberries and the toffee shards and pour into a serving dish. Decorate the top with the remaining whole raspberries and toffee shards. Serve immediately.

Caring for your pet

Holiday Havens Plan ahead for stress-free pets while you’re on holiday For those lucky enough to be packing up and travelling to UK beauty spots on holiday this summer, the obligatory packing check list of sun cream and swim wear is a familiar one. But for pet owners, the top priority once they have booked time off work and hotels, is what to do with their four-legged friends while they are away if their pets can’t travel with them. “Rule number one is to plan ahead”, says PDSA Vet Vicki Larkham-Jones: “It can be a very stressful time for pets when their owners go on holiday. Kennels and catteries are unfamiliar places and mean a break in their usual routine, so it’s always good to consider options carefully before choosing by going to visit the kennel owners and discussing how they operate and what they need from you. “For some pets, such as rescue animals or those who have never been in a kennel environment, it might be better to consider the alternative options available. There is a wealth of reputable

36

pet sitters who will either come and stay in the owner’s home, or have the pet live with them. Again, it’s important to visit or meet the sitter first and introduce them to your pets. This way, owners can get a feel for whether the arrangement suits everyone including their pet. Popular pet sitters, kennels and catteries are often booked up months in advance, so making plans and checking dates well before holidays are booked is always a sensible precaution. “Finally, make sure that pets are fully up-todate with their vaccinations, flea and worming treatments, to help ensure they don’t pick up any nasty parasites or illnesses whilst in their temporary accommodation – a reputable kennel or cattery will request this anyway” continues Vicki. “Following these simple measures leaves owners free to enjoy a stressfree holiday without worrying about their precious pets.”

Pet Care Q&A

Your questions answered with PDSA Vet Vicki Larkham-Jones Last month I was walking my Yorkie, Maggie, and a Staffie ran up to us. It was friendly at first, but then it grabbed Maggie round the throat and ran off. We caught up and I rushed her to the vet. Luckily she wasn’t hurt, but now she hates going out of the house and gets very anxious. How can I help her regain her confidence? Amy It will take time and patience for your dog to regain her confidence – don’t rush or force her to go anywhere that she doesn’t want to as this will make her anxiety worse. A useful technique is called ’desensitisation and counterconditioning’. This involves asking someone to walk their friendly dog at the same time as you but at a distance (e.g. on the other side of a field). Gradually walk Maggie a little closer towards your friend’s dog, praising her when she is calm and relaxed, but if she shows signs of anxiety calmly stop, turn around and walk in the opposite direction. Don’t reassure her if she becomes nervous, as this will reinforce her fear. Over a few weeks you should be able to get closer to the other dog until, eventually, Maggie is happy to meet the dog. Your best chance of success is to get expert help with this, so ask your vet for advice or visit the website of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (www. apbc.org.uk). Our house was recently broken into and our cat, Zebedee, was there at the time. Since then he has gone off his food and won’t sleep in his usual bed, plus he’s had a couple of accidents in the house. What should we do? Craig A break-in can be quite an unsettling experience for a cat as it can make them feel that the home

is no longer their own. Firstly you should take him to your vet for a check up. If there are no underlying medical reasons for this change in his behaviour, then it could well be a result of anxiety. Toileting inappropriately in the house is a sign of stress in cats and you should try to keep your routine as normal as possible. Make sure he has a safe area to rest in and familiar toys, bowls, beds and bedding to ensure that Zebedee realises that this home is still his own. Give Zebedee plenty of loving attention too. Pheromones can also help – these are scents that are reassuring to animals but undetectable to humans. They are available as plug-in diffusers, and should help to reduce his stress and anxiety. Finally, never punish Zebedee for any of his accidents, as this will stress him further and make the problem worse. My fish Boo has been swimming round in circles and is losing scales off the top part of her back. She is not eating as much as before. What should I do? Sammy There are different things that could be causing your fish’s condition. Possible causes of a change in a fish’s swimming behaviour can include bacterial infections, problems affecting the swim bladder (an organ that allows fish to control their position in the water) or the fish’s environment being unsuitable. A fish’s scales should be smooth, lie flat against the body and be unbroken. Scale loss can be the result of physical injury, when a fish bumps into something or rough handling, parasites, a water quality problem or skin infections. If there is an infection there will be additional signs, such as a reddened area. All of these can be linked to the fish’s immune status which in turn can cause swimming changes. I’d recommend that you get Boo checked out by your vet as soon as possible to try and find out what is causing these changes.

Information call for ICI war memorial Family members of former ICI workers who lost their lives at war are being sought

W

yre Council has joined forces with community groups and local historians to restore the ICI war memorial in Thornton and would like to hear from family members who may have a relative named on it. Situated at Four Lane Ends, the ICI memorial is separate from the main cenotaph and displays the names of former workers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. It was originally located at the firm’s site at Hillhouse Business Park before being moved to Four Lane Ends in 1997. Earlier this year, the council agreed to take over ownership of the memorial from AkzoNobel (who acquired ICI in 2008) and to restore it during the Centenary of the First World War. Now family members of those named on the memorial are being asked to help. Spokesman for the project David Baxter, said: ‘The memorial has been weathered over the years and the names have been eroded, so we are working together to ensure that the correct names are inscribed on the restored memorial. With the help of a local historian we have a list of the names that were originally on the memorial but research has suggested that there may be some inaccuracies. We would like any family members of those men who gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars and were originally on the memorial to come forward if they have evidence that there are inaccuracies to those names.’

38

Photo: Google Maps

The restoration team is particularly interested in talking to relatives of the following First World War servicemen: Jack Brennan or (Brannen), William Brockband or (Brockbank), John Crehan or (Crahan), Edward Keogh or (Kehoe), George Urmston or (Urmson) The team is working towards having the memorial fully restored in time for Remembrance Sunday in November and plans to hold a rededication ceremony involving community members, schools, family members and veterans. All family members are welcome to become involved in the project. For further information please contact Paul Deacon at Wyre Council on 01253 887236 or email paul.deacon@wyre.gov.uk

Line up of live music announced for Thornton Little Theatre Three top class music acts have been added to this year’s line up at Thornton Little Theatre

P

resented by ‘Hollow Horse Events’, whose mission is to bring nationwide artists to small local venues, ‘China Crisis’, ‘Kyla Brox’ and ‘A Celebration of Simon and Garfunkel’ will be appearing at the theatre later this year. First up on Friday 2 October, Tim Chu and Ian Bailey, present their unique take on the music of Simon and Garfunkel, stopping by Thornton as part of a UK tour. Much more than a tribute show, this is a celebration of the life and works of one of the worlds greatest singing duos. Tim and Ian play nearly two hours of Simon and Garfunkel’s music in chronological order, interspersed with stories about the songs. The set includes classics like ‘The Homeward Bound’, ‘Scarborough Fair’, ‘The Sound of Silence’, ‘I Am a Rock’, ‘Mrs Robinson’ and many more. There is always some solo Paul Simon material and the odd original song too. Everyone has a favourite so if you like the music of Simon and Garfunkel this show is the closest thing you’ll get to seeing them live! Tickets are just £12. Blues and Soul singer Kyla Brox is taking to the stage on Saturday 10 October with her repertoire of classic R and B songs, as well as her own compositions. Born to sing the blues, her stunning, powerful voice and passionate performances have wowed audiences worldwide. Nominated for the 2014 ‘European Blues Awards’ in the ‘Best Female’ category this is a rare opportunity to see her perform live at your local theatre. One of the most authentic soul singers in the UK, Kyla’s raw talent and purity stands out in an age of conveyor belt pop idols. Tickets are out now and are £10. Rounding things up are China Crisis, performing on Sunday 22 November. Formed in Liverpool in 1979 China Crisis are releasing their new studio album in 2015 and are embarking on a nationwide tour to promote it. With a string of top 40 singles and albums to call upon, as well as their new music, this will be a night that will be loved by fans new and old. Original members Eddie Lundon and Gary Daly will be playing all the familiar songs including Black Man Ray and Wishful Thinking. It’s a night not to be missed! Tickets are £15 and are expected to sell quickly so book your seats soon.

TOP: A Celebration of Simon and Garfunkel, ABOVE LEFT: Kyla Brox, ABOVE RIGHT: China Crisis with Wyre Council we identified an opportunity to bring quality entertainment to Thornton Little Theatre. I hope to bring an eclectic but popular selection of acts to the area. The three shows in autumn hopefully reflect this. “The Celebration of the Music of Simon and Garfunkel” is a show I personally have been involved with several times. It’s less of a tribute night, and more a chance to enjoy music created by two talented artists. Tim Chu and Ian Bailey are note perfect and as well as performing the songs we all know and love, they have many tales to tell of the legendary duo. Kyla Brox is quite simply one of the greatest female blues singers of this or any other generation and China Crisis are touring to promote their new album which has just been released and is currently receiving rave reviews. Why should we have to travel to the major cities for a top night out? We have great theatres and venues on our doorsteps let’s use them.’

Money Matters

How to haggle for the best deals By Martin Lewis Haggling isn’t just a skill for market stalls, these days where it really pays is at call centres. And if you’re a Sky customer there’s no better time to put your haggling skills to the test, as some Sky TV customers are facing hikes of over £50 a year. Yet this isn’t just for Sky. It works for other TV firms, mobile, TV, broadband, breakdown and more. Last year on my site, I polled over 7,000 people who tried to call-centre haggle, to see how successful they were company by company. The results are staggering, at Sky 86% succeeded in some form of discount, the AA 84%, TalkTalk 83%, Plusnet 82%, Virgin media 80% and RAC 78%. In other words, for every five people who tried, four got a deal. And don’t think the amounts are trivial either, here’s just some of the successes people have tweeted me in Sky’s current round of price hikes… “Just saved £315 a year with a good old haggle with Sky, cheers Martin.” “Phoned up and in 10 mins it’d knocked £134 off my bill. No change to services or terms. Thank you!” “Managed to save almost 50% by calling. Firm but polite with a clear message throughout my call.” 42

So don’t be shy, it’s time to tool up and get a haggle on. Here are my top ten tips (but for you, I’ll do it in 9)...

1. Benchmark the best deal.

It’s important to have the factual arsenal. Research the deals, discounts and codes that are available for new customers, as a basis for negotiation. Here’s a quick rundown for each of the main haggle areas. Digital TV: For example, you can currently get 25% off all Sky TV bundles and £75 bill credit, compare this with what you will be paying. You can use this figure to haggle with Sky or Virgin. See www.mse.me/digitalTV for all the deals. And of course the cheapest digital TV option is Freeview. It’s a one-off cost of around £20 for a box and there’s no monthly subscription. Breakdown cover: If you go via a cashback site, you can effectively sign up for basic AA or RAC cover for under £20. See www.mse.me/ breakdown for full best-buys. Broadband: Here the best deals are all promo offers. A common level is line rent and broadband for £16 a month, plus a £100 high street voucher. Full best-buys in www.mse.me/broadband.

2. Timing is crucial.

Haggling works best when you’re near or beyond the end of your contract as then they have a real risk you’ll leave. There’s no harm in giving it a try when you’re not, if you struggle then diarise when you’re nearing the end (you can give Sky notice of leaving 31 days before the end of your contract) and call back then.

Business & Finance 3. The haggling Holy Grail is the customer retention department.

If you’re coming to the end of your contract, or are out of it, then you’re wielding a powerhouse weapon: customer loyalty. If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”. There the staff ’s job is to keep you, and they have massively more discretion to offer you deals to do so.

4. Use charm, chutzpah, cheek and a smile.

Aggression or anger will just put their back up. You’re asking for a discount, and they’re just as much within their right not to give it as you are to leave.

Aim for polite, firm and non-combative.

5. Use the phrases that pay. You may find that the customer service rep will only offer a small discount at first, but if you don’t agree with the price use phrases like:

n I’ve worked out my monthly budget, and my absolute max is £[insert price here]/month n [TalkTalk/Virgin/BT] can do it for less... n I need to think about it... n I think my husband / wife will go bonkers if I pay that... n It’s still a lot of money... n What’s the very best you can do?

6. Don’t panic if it calls your bluff and says it’ll disconnect you.

Some people worry and get nervous to try this in case they’re disconnected. My easy ‘get out of jail free’ card on this is the phrase: “Hold on, I’ll call you back on that. I’d like to check with my wife/ husband/dog/Aunt Fanny first.”

7. Ask if it can throw in extras.

If it won’t slash the price, see if it can include any extras, like free calls or extra channels, bigger download limits, or one level higher breakdown cover

If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”

8. If you fail? Try, try and try again.

I’ve heard rumours that different staff members have quotas of how many deals they can do. Even if not true, it feels like that to many. You may have called the wrong person at the wrong time. So call back a few days later and speak to someone else. This works for many people.

9. Vote with your feet.

If you don’t get what you want and other firms offer the same for less, then you should seriously consider leaving and go grab one of those deals.

Hospital fundraiser offers Peace of Mind A hospital Summer Fete has helped to raise money to enhance the care given to people with dementia

C

lifton Hospital’s fete was held on Saturday 4th July, raising a total of £1,900 which will go towards Blue Skies Hospitals Fund’s Peace of Mind dementia appeal. The event was opened by Ian Johnson, Chairman of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who said: ‘This fete was another great fundraising event for Clifton Hospital and the care it offers to local patients with dementia. It was pleasing to see so much happening in our hospital, and the people who turned up to make it a success. This event was all about Clifton, and although there may not always be blue skies outside, there will always be Blue Skies inside helping to enhance the care we give to our patients.’ Peace of Mind will pay for a secure and interactive garden at Clifton Hospital and a memory corridor to help patients with dementia recall their earlier years. Linda Broadbent, Ward 1 Manager at Clifton Hospital, said: ‘The day went really well, and we’re so pleased the weather held out for us. We had lots going on, from plant and book stalls and face painting for the children to a top prize raffle which has helped to raise a lot of money for this important campaign. The garden and works we are raising money for will go a long way in enhancing the care we can give to our patients who have dementia. Thanks to everyone who showed up on the day, including Age UK Blackpool and District, which is supporting Peace of Mind, Blue Skies Hospitals Fund and to Horwich Farm which provided a holiday in the Peak District for our raffle.’ 46

Peace of Mind was launched at Clifton Hospital’s Christmas Fair in November 2014 by Jimmy Armfield CBE. Since then it has attracted support from staff who have held sponsored walks, cake sales and supermarket bag packs. Amanda Bennett, Head of Fundraising, said: ‘The Peace of Mind appeal is very important to Blue Skies Hospitals Fund, so it’s great to see that staff at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals are really getting behind it to raise as much money as they can. The event at Clifton was thoroughly enjoyable, and it was lovely to see so many families having fun whilst raising money to help enhance care to local dementia patients.’ For more information about Peace of Mind, please visit www.blueskieshospitalsfund.co.uk/ dementiaproject.shtml

Bargain second hand goods up for grabs Blackpool residents are being reminded that they can pick up a host of bargain buys this summer

R

efurbished washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers and even computers are all available to purchase from as little as £65 at Blackpool Council’s Reuse shop. The Re-use store is based on the upper level of the tip at Bristol Avenue and sells a large variety of second hand items at knockdown prices. As well as recycled white goods, sets of golf clubs, books, musical instruments and furniture are all available to buy from the store, which is open six days a week, Friday to Wednesday, between 10am and 3.45pm. Each of the products has been diverted from landfill and repaired, refurbished and tested, ready to sell on. The money raised in the store goes towards improving recycling services across Blackpool, while a large donation is donated to the Mayor’s Charity. Cllr Christine Wright, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for promoting the reuse store, said: ‘It’s no secret that the council’s services are under a lot of pressure due to cuts in our grant from central government. So when residents come and buy products from the reuse store, not only are they getting a fantastic bargain but they are also helping to improve reuse and recycling in Blackpool. So far the store has proved really popular, however we need

people to continue to visit to keep it open. Not only are the items cheaper to buy but there are some real treasures to be found for those people keen to hunt out a bargain. All the money spent in the shop is reinvested back in to the community, either by keeping our popular recycling initiatives like Rover running or by helping to train and keep local people in work.’ If you want to buy anything from the re-use store or the electrical workshop, visit the tip on Bristol Avenue or call the office on 476317.

Hot fun in the Summertime July may have started off with some of the hottest days on record but the fun has only just begun in Blackpool.

W

ith the premiere of ‘Cats the musical’ having recently kicked off an eight week summer season run at the Winter Gardens, a newlybuilt outdoor adventure high ropes course wowing families at Stanley Park and Blackpool Pleasure Beach showing off their brand-new Red Arrows Skyforce ride, there are a myriad of things to do. Throw in new features at Madame Tussauds, our award winnings beaches and the amazing Blackpool zoo and the question becomes why wouldn’t you take a break at home, and that’s without even mentioning the legendary, can’t-miss, Blackpool Tower! Here’s a rundown (in no particular order) of our Blackpool things to do for the summer holidays : Experience the magic of ‘Cats’. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical returns to Blackpool direct following a sell-out season at the London Palladium. Jane McDonald plays the role of Grizabella during a strictly-limited eight week summer season run at the Blackpool Opera House. Opening on July 9, CATS is a magical musical like no other with an amazing score that includes the timeless “Memory”, spectacular set designs, stunning costumes and breath-taking choreography. See the coolest show in town. This year’s Hot Ice show, Desire, is the ultimate in stylish, fast-moving family entertainment. Staged within The Arena at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, it features a cast of world championship performers, wildly glamorous costumes and stunning special effects. Runs daily, Monday to Saturday, from July 2 to September. Tackle the High Ropes. Are you brave enough to tackle Blackpool’s newest attraction? High Ropes is situated within the magnificent Stanley Park and presents a host of challenges to those fearless enough 50

to have a go. There is a zip wire, rock climbing wall, traversing swinging tyres, bridges, obstacles and the exhilarating ‘leap of faith’. Go on a musical journey. Blackpool’s wonderfully ornate Grand Theatre stages the song and dance extravaganza, Puttin’ On The Ritz. Starring Katya Virshilas and Jared Murillo from Strictly Come Dancing and a cast of West End performers, this show features a collection of timeless classics, making it the feel-good experience of the summer. Runs to August 29. Catch a vintage tram. They’re back! Blackpool’s iconic heritage trams are back on track for 2015 by public demand. The traditional tram cars will be operating alongside the contemporary new Blackpool trams on weekends throughout the summer. It’s a trip down Memory Lane that you won’t want to miss! Fly with the Red Arrows. Take to the skies in this unique white-knuckle experience at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. On Red Arrows Skyforce, you can step into your very own Red Arrows cockpit, take control of the plane and spin and glide in your very own aerial display. Local RSPCA news Animals needing good homes

S

pecial appeal for our small animal unit that has lots of ‘smallies’ looking for new homes. 5 Degus which have been with us for a few months, all males and are £30 per pair. There are 6 male Guinea Pigs £20 each and 3 Hamsters who have all been in for 4 months now, they are desperate for new homes! £7 each to adopt. We have 3 Rabbits for rehoming, currently all in foster homes as the centre has no accommodation for Rabbits yet but we hope to raise enough funds to build one sometime in the future. The Rabbits are on our website, anyone willing to give them a home should get in touch and we can arrange for you to meet them. We would like to announce our First dog at the centre. ‘Sapphire the Staffie’ who needs re-homing. She is 4 years old, good with people, maybe a bit too bouncy for young children but certainly would do well in a family setting. She loves her tennis balls and long walks. She needs further training and company most of the time as she really likes being with someone. She is good with other dogs and costs £120 to adopt . Neutered, Flead, Wormed, Vaccinated and Chipped. You would need to visit 3 times to complete the adoption procedure. She has been with us since May. All the family must meet her including any other pets. Sapphire was rescued by a member of the public from her previous owner before him, but unfortunately he was then made homeless so was unable to keep her. Construction of the kennels is slowly under way and we hope to have a few dogs in by August for rehoming. We

update our website regularly as well as our Facebook page. We have two events in August, our Open Day at the Animal Centre on Sat 1st and our annual Dog Show in Stanley Park on Sun 30th, further details can be found on our site or in the ‘What’s On’ section of LINK-MAG. If you can help adopt any of our animals then please get in touch or come and visit us any day of the week Tuesday Friday 11am - 6pm or Sat/Sunday 11am -5pm The animal centre is in desperate need of blankets, toys (dog and cat) small animal food, cages for small animals, kitten meat/dry food, senior dry/wet food, any donations are always greatly appreciated. New era for CCTV monitoring in Blackpool Blackpool’s CCTV monitoring service is set to be reinstated with the support of volunteers

T

he service fell victim to Council budget cuts in 2013 with cameras still operating but round-the-clock monitoring no longer taking place. Since the service stopped there have been numerous calls to restore some form of monitoring, both from town centre businesses and from victims of crime. Blackpool Council’s Night Time Economy Working Group, which includes businesses, public services and other organisations, and which meets regularly to focus on the future of the town centre, has also shown major support for the reintroduction. As a result, Blackpool Council, working in partnership with Blackpool Town Centre BID, have jointly been exploring how some form of service could be restored at a reduced cost. They have now developed a proposal for a volunteer-led service with Blackpool BID and the Council agreeing to second officers to help manage the project. Blackpool Police, meanwhile, have agreed use their volunteer co-ordinating team to recruit, train and vet staff suitability. It is hoped the service will be up and running by September. The cost of staff time and training is set to be shared between Blackpool BID and Blackpool Council with some additional help from a recent central Government crime reduction grant.

was never something that we were keen to do. We know it was a service that helped people to feel safe. However, the financial reality was that we had very little choice. It was expensive to run and we were, and still are, facing some of the most severe cuts in the country. We have always, however, recognised the value the service provided and the Night Time Economy Working Group share that view so, for some time now, we’ve been looking at ways of monitoring the cameras at peak times. We’ve worked with Blackpool BID to devise a new volunteer-based scheme which is supported by professional officers and will come at a vastly reduced cost. That, for me, is a good solution and we hope it will be up and running very soon.’ Eileen Ormand, the Town Centre and Blackpool BID Manager, said: ‘Consultation with Blackpool BID members has shown that restoring town centre CCTV is a priority for both daytime and night time members. As a result we’ve been working with Blackpool Council over a period of time and we’ve now found a solution that is workable for all parties. We’re delighted and we will be pushing to get this initiative up and running as soon as possible. It is vital that people feel safe when they come to Blackpool town centre.’

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: ‘Ending the CCTV monitoring service 60
