Leisure revamp set to start in Garstang
R
esidents in Garstang can look forward to new and improved leisure and swimming facilities this September.
Wyre’s Cabinet has approved £390,000 investment in the town’s leisure centre on Windsor Road and nearby swimming pool on Oak Road following consultation about refurbishment plans. Feedback from customers highlighted the need to increase the size of the gym at the leisure centre. As a result, the gym will be extended and new free weights, resistance and cardio equipment installed. Changing rooms, toilets and the reception area will also be refurbished and a disabled changing facility added. Customers at the swimming pool asked for improved changing rooms and shower facilities, so the shower area will be made larger and refurbished alongside the changing rooms which will receive new cubicles and lockers. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Cabinet member with responsibility for sport and leisure at Wyre Council, said: “I’m pleased that we’re ready to start the Garstang leisure refurbishment programme which will provide a more enjoyable experience overall for customers. “I’d like to thank everyone who responded to our consultation - we’ve incorporated as many of the suggestions as possible and the changes we have planned were all flagged up as areas for improvement. 26
“Customers can look forward to a larger gym with new equipment, greater accessibility and fresh, new surroundings at both the leisure centre and swimming pool.” Dave Parker, Senior Manager at Fylde Coast YMCA, said: “I’m pleased to be working together with Wyre Council on developing the leisure and swimming pool centres to enhance the opportunities for health, fitness and wellbeing within our local community. “We’ll have equipment and activities on offer to everyone no matter your fitness level, from high intensity training and aqua aerobics to relaxation classes. We also hosts sports including volleyball, badminton, table tennis, indoor bowls and football.” Work at the leisure centre is planned to start on 4 July. It will remain open as much as possible, although there may be some disruption to customers. The swimming pool will close during the refurbishment which starts on 18 July (to coincide with the pool’s quietest period over the school summer holidays). Work at both venues will be completed in early September. Working out at the gym and swimming lengths are not the only way to keep fit and active this summer; Wyre Council runs a programme of free, guided health walks across the borough, throughout the year.
