Hold audition tiny dancer One of the region’s most popular dance groups is holding an audition for new recruits

he Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company has now been running for two years and has had extraordinary success.
During their first year in existence alone they won places at the ‘Lancashire Youth Dance Festival’, ‘U Dance North West’ and at the first ever ‘Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival’. Giving youngsters from the region an opportunity to showcase their skills on big stages. They then built on that success this year by returning to the ‘Lancashire Youth Dance Festival’ for a second year, working with renowned choreographer Lisi Perry on a performance in Central Library and by taking part in the national tour of ‘Hercules’ by New Art Club, which was performed on 23rd June at Blackpool Grand Theatre. The company is now on the lookout for the top talent of all styles and levels of experience to join them. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: ‘Applicants can be aged between 12 and 19. The company are looking for passionate dancers, people who are 22
enthusiastic and those who want a challenge. Whether you’ve been dancing all your life, or are brand new to it; if you’ve got what it takes, then we want to see you! As a member of the company, you will develop your contemporary dance technique, work with professional dancers and choreographers and create high quality performance work to be performed on stages across the North West. It’s an amazing opportunity and it’s vital that we continue to develop the arts in Blackpool through programmes like this.’ The audition takes place on Friday 17 July from 5pm and 8pm at The Grand Theatre. 21st Garstang Festival of Arts and Music Sitting by the banks of the River Wyre between Bowland and the Bay, the handsome Lancashire market town of Garstang again showcases a wealth of talent in the annual summer Festival of Arts & Music.
T
his wonderful celebration of the Arts is held in the picturesque market town of Garstang on the banks of the River Wyre. 2015 is the 21st Festival and promises to be as varied and entertaining as ever. The Festival comes to a climax on Bank Holiday Monday with the 5th Town Criers Competition. The Arts Festival is co-ordinated by the Garstang Arts Festival Committee in conjunction with local community groups. Funding comes from ticket sales, donations and grants. Throughout the week from 24th. - 30th August, the town comes alive with music, drama, poetry, painting, workshops, talks and walks. Art includes exhibitions in the Arts Centre, based in the town’s C18th. former Grammar School, community venues and even goes “Live” on the streets with al fresco artists in Montemarte-style demonstrations. This year also sees a Pop-up ArtsTrail of art works in local shops and town centre pop-up “galleries”.

he annual Gala through the picturesque villages of Preesall and Knott End returns this July with fabulous coloured floats and costumes. Starting at Knott End Ferry and ending at Preesall Park where annual fair takes place alongside a great programme of field events. This year’s Gala Theme is Superheroes so join in with your fancy dress or homemade float. Judging will take place before the procession starts. This year there will be a Superheroes Scarecrow competition with First, Second and Third Prizes, so get those scarecrows ready for going up around the villages! he always popular festival, which runs from the 1st to 4th July, is now in its ninth year and will again feature a host of top authors, poets and speakers as well as a free family fun day known as ‘Story Safari’. A huge hit with families in previous years, the family fun day part of the festival in Stanley Park will feature up to 20 different events, activities and attractions all crammed in to three hours of fun from 1pm on Saturday 4th July. So come and search the park for giant pigeons, encounter our huge bubble breathing dragon or tackle the amazing Tower Menagerie. Children (or those who are children at heart) can become a safari character themselves by making a magical mask to wear during all the exciting activities and you can bring a picnic or join us at the Tiger’s Tea Party. For those with a more grown-up literary focus there are also a range of exciting events. Wordpool launches on Wednesday 1st July at 6pm at the Mazzei Café in Blackpool’s stunning Winter Gardens with an evening of words, music and performance poetry from the brilliant Tony Walsh. It’s then followed up by a packed day of interesting events at Central Library on Thursday 2 July. First on the bill at 11am and 12.30pm respectively are Ali Shaw and Tasha Kavanagh, two new novelists. Lancaster University graduate Ali authored the excellent The Man Who Rained – an atmospheric novel described as ‘like an adult fairy tale’ and will give a talk about his life and work. Tasha, meanwhile, is a former film editor whose credits include Hollywood blockbusters like Twelve Monkeys and The Talented Mr Ripley. She recently released her debut novel ‘Things We Have In Common’ having cut her teeth writing children’s books. At 2.30pm and back by popular demand, is crime writer, Elly Griffiths. Author of the successful Ruth Galloway Series; she will talk about her new novel The Ghost Girl. Husband and wife crime writing duo Bob and Carol Bridgestock, consultants for TV series Happy Valley and Scott and Bailey, follow her at 4pm. The pair draw on their combined 47 years’ experience working for the police in West Yorkshire within their work and their DI Dylan series of works has proven extremely popular. And if that wasn’t enough, Wordpool fans can enjoy a performance from the fantastic ‘Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company’ at 5.30pm before Manchesterbased, Collette Snowden, discusses her debut novel ‘The Secret of Not Drowning’, at 6pm. There is even

a Twitter book club in the evening which looks forward to the visit of historical novelist Elizabeth Fremantle on the Friday and discusses her novel Watch The Lady. The huge list of interesting authors doesn’t end there though, on Friday 3rd July Central Library is again the venue for a range of interesting conversational interviews which will spotlight some of the most interesting authors around. At 11am a pair of exteachers, Dan Worsley and Karen Charlton, are in conversation with poet and Blackpool Museum learning and skills manager, John Simpson Wedge. They hope to give aspiring authors an insight into self-publishing. They’re followed at 12.30pm by Elizabeth Freemantle, who will also chat to John, about her life and works including a three part Tudor trilogy which has achieved national acclaim. Southport born author Carys Bray, publisher of two books and a regular visitor to Blackpool, joins writer Amanda Brooke in conversation at 1.45pm for a conversational that will look at the more emotional side of writing. And finally on Friday, for those with a spirit for the supernatural, Helen Phifer talks to Sandra Mangan about her ghost thriller stories. All library events include drinks and a snack and tickets cost £3 with 50p off for library members. pecial Appeal on our two resident Roborovski Hamsters, they cannot live together or with other hamsters alike. Fat Sam came into the centre after the sudden death of her owner. Fat Sam does need a diet as she is slightly on the larger side. Woggle came into the centre after the sudden death of his owner. Both are approx 6-7 months old and will need a large cage with plenty of enrichment to keep them occupied as well as owners who have the time to socialise them and get them used to being handled. Special appeals for two long stay cats Ayla and Harvey also. Ayla was abandoned at a vet surgery back in December 2014. She came to the cattery in the hope of finding a new home but 5 months later, she is still looking for a companion. She is a very sweet girl who was a little shy and withdrawn when she first arrived at the Centre but has gained confidence and has come out of her shell. She is a beautiful cat who seems to be overlooked by everyone. She’s very playful, loves her treats and is affectionate, but can be quite independent and likes a space of her own. She may take some time to settle into a new home but your patience will be rewarded by this lovely cat. An experienced cat owner with no other pets or small children would be perfect.

In previous years our Spring and Summer BIG DIGS have found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and early Mediaeval activity in the Fylde peninsula and this year’s digging season is just as promising. WAG is affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and we have strong links with professionals in the field. Clean sweep of Seaside Awards for Blackpool All of Blackpool’s prestigious beaches have been granted Seaside Awards

he national awards, announced by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’, have rewarded Blackpool South, Blackpool Central, Blackpool North and Bispham for their high standards of beach management, as well as their nearby facilities. It also commends the Council’s beach patrol work to help beach goers stay safe while also advising them on how to protect the local environment and keep it clean. It is the second successive year that all four beaches have been granted the award, which celebrates some of the best beaches in the country.
