RALLY DRIVER, GEORGIA SHIELS, TAKES ONE STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING THE FIRST EVER FEMALE WORLD RALLY CHAMPION Young rallying extraordinaire Georgia Shiels, 19, from Lancashire has officially been announced as a Jack Wills Young Brit 2015 in the competitive category of Endurance. Georgia was 1 of only 8 winners after the competition was narrowed down from over 2300 applicants to 40 semi-finalists and then to the final 8 winners. The competition designed to support young up-and-coming British talent, will give the youngster a platform to showcase her ability and talent before an exciting 2016 season! “I couldn’t believe it when I received the phone call from Jack Wills saying I had won! I was in shock! It was difficult to believe that I had won alongside such incredible young people who were all making a huge impact on the world.” All eight winners receive £5000 cash, a £500 Jack Wills wardrobe, a photo shoot and mentorship. This will be a huge help towards Georgia’s funding for her rallying as her 2016 season will cost around £100,000. Georgia has spent the last year building up sponsorship to compete in a major European Rally Championship, which will be a giant leap towards her ultimate goal! She was also lucky enough to receive an additional £1000 from her mentor, John Constable, the CEO of STA Travel! What a day! “It’s amazing to see that my hard work is finally paying off! Seafront Lowry unveiled in Knott End A sculpture in honour of artist LS Lowry has been officially unveiled on the seafront at Knott End. Supported by Wyre Council’s Shaping Your Neighbourhood initiative, it celebrates Lowry’s links with the village as depicted in his painting ‘The Jetty at Knott End, near Fleetwood’ and portrays a matchstick man and dog from the artwork. The Lancashire artist often visited Knott End in the 1940s and 1950s and painted a number of seafront scenes illustrating the Fleetwood ferry and people waiting on the jetty. The sculpture is located in the spot next to the jetty where the artist was known to stand and sketch. The project has been jointly funded by a £2,000 Shaping Your Neighbourhood grant and £3,500 from Preesall Town Council, and forms part of a wider plan by Fleetwood’s Charity School in Preesall to improve the area around the jetty and celebrate Over Wyre’s arts heritage. Councillor Vivien Taylor, Cabinet member with responsibility for community engagement at Wyre Council, said at the unveiling: "Wyre Council is very proud to co-fund the project with Preesall Town Council through Shaping Your Neighbourhood. "As a child, I had the privilege of watching Lowry undertake some of his sketches at this spot, so I am thrilled that we've been able to create this lasting reminder of his work. I'm also delighted that the children who first considered celebrating the artist were able to take their ideas and put them into action." The Mayor of Preesall, Councillor Philip Orme, added: "Celebrating Lowry's links to Knott End is a means of attracting more visitors to the area and the sculpture will hopefully help put the village on the map." Created by WEC Group Ltd in Darwen and fabricated by first year apprentices from its Welding and Engineering Training Academy, the sculpture is made of stainless steel and took 500 hours to complete. In August, local children took part in art workshops, drawing pictures of local scenes using Lowry’s iconic stick figure style and colour pallet before creating a graffiti mural with the help of a professional artist.

We have met in various venues in Poulton, the old British Legion Hall, then the WRVS room on Queensway and now we meet in a lovely room at the United Reform Church also on Queensway.
