He told us that the last occupants of the island left in the 1930s’ and the army made a base there. The largest island is Hirta whose sea cliffs are the highest in the UK with a sheer drop to the ocean of hundreds of feet. There are two types of sheep on the islands and many varieties of birds – too many to mention.
