Active Kids Get Streetwise

Streetwise Sports Club is a weekly, after school sport and activity event run by qualified coaches at West View Climbing & Leisure Centre. Children aged 8-14 years can attend every Thursday (except Easter and Christmas school holidays) between 4pm-6pm and take part in a range of sports and activities to keep them occupied and improve their health.

The sessions are staffed by fully qualified coaches and include swimming, football, climbing, and dodgeball, along with other sports. This means the children can practice an activity they love already, or it’s a chance for

them to try something new.

Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for community and environment, said: ‘This is an excellent opportunity for local children to keep active and learn new skills. The Streetwise Sports Club offers parents a safe environment for their children to take part in sports and keeps them occupied after school and during the half term holidays.’

A New Way Around The City

Visitors to Preston, the Guild City, should have no problem finding their way around, thanks to a new city centre map. Featuring Preston’s key attractions, recent graphics graduate, Ric Bixter alongside UCLan graphics tutor, Pete Thompson, developed the map on behalf of Preston City Council and the Business Improvement District (BID). The map will replace those currently in existence and be available at key locations, including the Visitor Information Centre, the train station, hotels and the university. A version of the new city centre map will also form part of the new ‘way finding system’ which will be phased in as part of the public realm improvements on Fishergate and Corporation street. Mayor of Preston, Councillor Veronica Afrin, said: ‘It’s important that visitors to Preston can find out what’s on offer along with being a practical aid to those unfamiliar with the city, giving a great first impression.’ Mark Whittle, Marketing Manager at BID, said: ‘We are delighted to have partnered with UCLan and the City Council to develop this new map. 18

A lot of work has gone in to development and we are excited to see this appear across the city highlighting Preston’s offer.’ Pete Thompson, UCLan tutor added: ‘I have worked with maps for a number of years now before the opportunity arose for the creation of a new map for Preston city centre. PRESTON FLOWER CLUB meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (except June, August and December) at St Martin’s Hall, Broadway, Fulwood PR2 9TH, at 2pm. GIFT (Guild Initiative for Furniture Trust) A local charity which collects unwanted furniture and household items from the general public (free of charge) and distributes them to people in need in the Preston area - (people are referred to us by over 20 local organisations including Preston domestic violence, Social services, housing associations, Barnardos) - people who have been allocated accommodation but have no means of furnishing it. We have been operating in Preston for over 20 years (formed in Guild Year 1992) with 5 part time members of staff and volunteers we run a very efficient, low cost, but highly valued service. We help over 400 cases a year - over 800 people including many aged under 25 and dependent children, former homeless, people leaving prison or escaping domestic violence. Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s stop smoking service is urging quitters not to struggle on their own but to get in touch!
