Preston City Council is to carry out a soft market test to seek feedback from experienced organisations, on its aspiration for an innovative and economically viable ‘Entertainment and Leisure Hub’ at the Guild Hall complex.

The council, which has been amongst the worst affected by government budget cuts, is seeking to reduce the subsidy it supports the Guild Hall with which is currently in excess of £1 million per year. Interested parties will be invited to attend an open day and discuss ideas and options already in the public domain about how the Guild Hall could be operated in the future.
Councillor Tom Burns, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “As a council we want to achieve the best offer of commercial, retail, leisure, entertainment and culture for the city centre. “We need to get the views of experienced organisations on whether this approach is attractive to the market and can offer greater economies of scale and whether we can achieve efficiency savings.
The aim of the exercise is to enable the Council to suitably shape its future aspirations for the Guild Hall and assess if there is sufficient market interest to demonstrate whether commercial investment is viable. The council has stressed that the key outcomes of any proposal must ensure that: • The existing leisure, entertainment and cultural offer within Preston is enhanced significantly; • The local economy is directly supported through

Events this month • Garstang Arts Centre The new season’s Lunchtime Concerts are arranged, as usual, for the Arts Centre by June Baker, and are free, although donations are always welcome. At present 5 developers are in the process of applying for planning permission to build homes to the north of Hoyles Lane & Lightfoot Lane, which in the Preston Masterplan could include 5000+ homes to the north of Preston. The Majority of this traffic is scheduled to feed into the existing road network with Hoyles Lane, Lea Road, Cottam Way, Tom Benson Way and Lightfoot Lane bearing the brunt of this extra traffic. Cottam Village Action Group [CoVAG] is one of the residents action groups that have been set up to ensure that these developers listen to the local residents on how they would like the area to be developed, for the benefit of existing residents as well as the future ones. Whilst we are not the only action group covering the north of Preston we have close working relationships with the others and have links from our website to these groups.
