MUSEUM EXTENSION HOUSING ICONIC WW2 PLANE CELEBRATED
004 ATB
T
Thousands of visitors have now visited the £5.4 million extension to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, which now houses an original Spitfire aircraft thanks to specialist project management from national property, construction, and infrastructure consultancy Pick Everard.
The project comprised the design and construction of a new 3,800 square foot, double height exhibition space with mezzanine and the alteration and refurbishment of the existing café space within the art gallery and museum, alongside extensive external landscaping. Utilising a steel frame and rainscreen cladding, the new exhibition space has been designed with specialist structural glazing to allow the main attraction, the city’s iconic RW388 Spitfire Aircraft, to be exhibited. The area also houses a flight simulator, model Hurricane aircraft and other exhibitions. Seeking an expedited project process to ensure scheduled delivery, Pick Everard – operating under Perfect Circle’s unique collaboration – was appointed as Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s multi-disciplinary construction consultant through SCAPE’s Built Environment Consultancy Services (BECS) framework.
4
Stoke-on-Trent is internationally renowned for its ceramics. The area has a history of coal mining, so specialist geotechnical design input was critical. In conjunction with the Coal Authority, an approach was agreed to backfill existing mine workings beneath the proposed building, which allowed construction to proceed. Matt Hall, national director for project management at Pick Everard said: “We are delighted to have delivered such a historically significant development, which creates a lasting legacy for the city of Stoke-onTrent. Our expertise, combined with that from tourism and leisure architect Glancy Nicholls, has created a spectacular display space for the iconic Spitfire – a centrepiece the city can be proud of.” The new spaces, constructed by Morgan Sindall Construction, allow the exhibition space to be enjoyed by people both inside and outside of the Potteries Art Gallery and Museum. Cllr Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for infrastructure, regeneration and heritage, said: “We are really happy with the outcome of this project. Not only have we managed to pay homage to one of Stoke-on-Trent’s true icons – Reginald J. Mitchell, the designer of the Spitfire plane – but we have also improved the aesthetics and accessibility for those walking to and around the site, through our new pedestrian links. The site will add tangible value and energise the community, providing them with a new landmark the city can be proud of.” www.pickeverard.co.uk

Waterlane House Poolside Kitchen By Brandt Design
C
reative and inspiring British interior design specialists, Brandt Design, create a ‘room with a view’ with this poolside contemporary kitchen featuring its ultramodern Urban Furniture Collection. Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design says, “We are well-versed in creating unique schemes for our customers, especially when it comes to balancing both the practical and extravagant elements of kitchen design. This newly completed kitchen living space is a great example of how enhancing the flow of the entire ground floor, will unify both the design and residents in the home. As trends continue to err towards multi-generational living, a one-size fits all kitchen is now a thing of the past and instead, multi-discipline interiors have taken over to welcome a new era of ‘high-performance’ kitchen living spaces.”
6
Waterlane House is a kitchen living space that is all things to all people, providing a perfect space to cook, dine, entertain and even swim in, thanks to the connecting swimming pool off the main kitchen. Featuring a statement bar-style island, bank of appliances, hidden larder storage and the latest premium appliances for the modern home, the kitchen is zoned by a run of bi-fold patio doors and practical roof terrace with lantern window that floods natural light throughout the ground floor. To accompany the urban flavour of the concrete effect, handleless slab doors is a deluxe 60mm porcelain worktop with square-edged profile, which completes the look and provides a practical surface to prepare and cook food. In the chef quarters, there is a fully integrated twin-set of Gaggenau combination microwave and steam ovens in Silver, as well as a BORA X Pure combined cooktop and extractor that sits alongside a Matt Back Sink by 1810 Company and Quooker Flex Black all-in-one hot water tap with flexible hose.
007 ATB
When admiring the pool, the homeowners can take advantage of the hidden breakfast station to their right. Featuring a Miele Coffee Machine with matching black toaster, marble effect countertop and splashback, this type of lifestyle solution is extremely convenient by creating a practical area to make coffee and prepare breakfast that disappears when not in use. Matt black fixtures and fittings complement the industrial-style elements throughout the kitchen space like contemporary door handles, light switches, window frames and bar stools. Large format square tiles in matching graphite have been designed to run continuously throughout the ground floor and this ensures a direct connection between inside and out, so the kitchen and swimming pool area are intrinsically linked: whatever the weather! www.brandtdesign.co.uk

LLI DESIGN'S TOTAL REFURBISHMENT OF HIGHGATE EDWARDIAN TOWNHOUSE LLI Design has recently completed a total refurbishment of a 3 storey Edwardian townhouse on a leafy residential road in Highgate, a desirable residential area of North London. LLI Design's clients wanted to create a warm, comfortable home with modern touches. Although the house was in reasonable condition, the joinery and fittings throughout the house were dated, had been well used and looked tired. Many of the period features had been stripped out and those that remained had not been maximised. The house lacked character and personality although it benefited from ‘good bones’, nicely proportioned rooms,

a delightful garden and a handsome exterior. LLI Design felt that more could be made of the period features, enhancing some and reinstating others to bring out more of the Edwardian feel of the property. The brief was to create a warm, comfortable and welcoming home referencing and emphasising the house’s Edwardian past as well as adding more contemporary elements to the scheme.
By subtle changes to the spaces and by adding texture, color and interesting material choices LLI Design was able to create a warm, comfortable and welcoming family home. LLI Design has achieved a harmonious and calm aesthetic throughout with modern touches within a timeless design. LLI Design offers a comprehensive design service, taking projects from briefing through to Handover; creating beautifully crafted interiors for discerning clients. Recent projects include the interior design and modernisation of properties in Hampstead, Belgravia and Highgate including a 10,000 sq ft Victorian residence, a 12,000 sq ft new build home and the co-joining and re-planning of two apartments to provide a single luxury penthouse. www.llidesign.co.uk

WARWICKSHIRE ARCHITECTS NOMINATED FOR REGIONAL DESIGN AWARD
M
Michael Kendrick Architects, a Leamington Spa-based creative architecture studio, has been officially shortlisted for the 2022 RIBA West Midlands awards. Internationally regarded as a mark of design excellence, the RIBA awards recognises the best examples of modern architecture, both regionally and nationally. Nominated for its work on Mill Lodge house in Leamington Spa, Michael Kendrick Architects are among seven architectural teams on the shortlist for this year’s West Midlands category.
011 ATB
Situated within the Leamington Spa Conservation Area, Mill Lodge is one of three residential properties which have been shortlisted for the RIBA West Midlands category. A contemporary, one- bedroom dwelling, the property was originally commissioned by the client as a home for their elderly parents, which could enable them to live independently. In its design, the home provides a contemporary twist on the traditional coach houses found within the town and uses a combination of traditional and contemporary materials and construction detailing. Occupying a plot of just 160 sq.m., the Mill Lodge project is additionally noted for its innovative use of space and seamless integration into the surrounding, residential area. Company founder, Michael Kendrick, said of the news: “All of us at Michael Kendrick Architects are delighted to be shortlisted for this year’s RIBA West Midlands awards. Mill Lodge is a project which exemplifies everything that we as a company stand for: it is contemporary in its design, whilst still being respectful to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the past; it is sustainably made, and it is thoughtful in the way it navigates the space and the challenges its presents." “From raising the ground floor to allow for flood risk, to using a generous amount of glazing to maximise interior lighting, the work that we carried out at Mill Lodge testifies to how effective simple, well-crafted buildings and sustainable building methods are. There is little in the way of choice when it comes to homes for senior folk and the options that do exist often lack style or character." www.michaelkendrick.co.uk

ACOUSTIC PANELS CAN EMBRACE THE EXTREME Recent tests have shown that Troldtekt acoustic panels withstand moisture levels up to 98%, even when combined with high temperatures up to 40°C. These latest tests were carried out by the accredited Danish Technological Institute to the European product standard for suspended ceilings (EN 13964). While the composition of the panels has remained unchanged, this new round of stringent testing reinforces the fact that the panels are suitable for the most demanding of wet, warm and humid environments. They do not warp over time, giving them a life span in excess of 50 years. The panels are inherently robust and durable because the combined strength of the cement coupled with the breathability of wood means the structure does not rot and acts as an anti-microbial surface resisting fungal growth and other microorganisms. www.troldtekt.co.uk

MAJOR INNOVATIVE NEW SOLUTION FROM THE EVER PROGRESSIVE SCHÖCK Over six decades Schöck has built a formidable international reputation for innovative and progressive product design. The company is best known for its market leading range of Isokorb structural thermal breaks, but its pioneering reinforcement technology and impact sound insulation solutions are also a significant part of the product portfolio. Innovation though is not always about original product development. The Schöck philosophy of rethinking existing product capabilities can lead to derivative technology and the new Sconnex product range is a perfect example. It offers outstanding insulation performance, combined with an exceptional load-bearing capacity.
14
Closing the last major thermal bridge - Type W, for insulating the thermal bridge at the base, or the top of the reinforced concrete wall; type P for insulating the column head and eliminating the need for flank insulation; and type M, a capillary barrier that insulates at the base, or the top, of a masonry wall. With these ingenious high quality solutions, the company has transferred its Isokorb expertise in balcony technology to walls and columns. But what necessary development steps and which building physics obstacles had to be overcome for the concept to become an approved component?
Building physics and expert analysis - The main focus of the 2050 building policy guidelines is to reduce energy losses and a critical area is the thermal performance of the building envelope, through a fabric first approach. Sconnex contributes significantly to meeting such a challenging and vital sustainable concept. About 40% of all thermal bridges in a building are caused by walls and columns, resulting in around 10% of heating energy losses. So the objective was to be the first company to develop a component for wall and column connections that both minimises thermal bridges and makes external insulation unnecessary.
All three product types
However, bringing a major new product to market requires extensive due diligence. First, building physics analysis confirmed the solution as being realistic in its practical implementation. Then, extensive expert opinions were prepared for the German Institute for Construction Technology (DIBt), where all mandatory legal requirements, including 90 minute fire resistance, were met. Because of the variance from practiced construction methods, Schöck also involved scientists from the University of Darmstadt. With groundbreaking innovations, Schöck often teams with specialists from universities and high-profile engineering firms in the development of calculation models. In one dissertation, an empirical design proposal was created for the application of the connection element in construction practice, based on extensive experimental studies on its load-bearing behaviour. Schöck test results were also incorporated and the design proposal ratified by expert opinion. Total assurance for architects and planners - By introducing Sconnex, Schöck has met the needs of the construction industry in maximising the reduction of thermal bridges involving walls and columns. Architects and planners can be assured that the Sconnex product family sets new standards for energyefficient construction in the 21st century; and those who have already incorporated the products into their projects are enthusiastic about the new design freedom, the planning safety and the economically achievable results for the client. www.schoeck.com

CONCRETE CHANNEL WITH BASALT FIBRES – NEW ERA BEGINS FOR HAURATON Hauraton makes concrete material even more efficient for modern drainage technology by enhancing the formulation with natural basalt fibres. The addition of mineral or textile fibres increases maximum stability, strength, and impact resistance. By amplifying the impact resistance, the more robust and durable the product. This is particularly important for components that are exposed to considerable dynamic stresses, in this case, drainage channels subject to vehicles at high speeds or regularly trafficked by heavy loads.
The basis of basalt rock is available all over the world in large quantities which is formed naturally on the earth’s surface. By combining basalt fibres with the well-known material concrete, both the structure and the service life of the product is increased. Since the end product is a purely mineral mixture, there is no need for material separation during disposal. This protects the environment as it is simply fully-recyclable at the end of the product's life cycle. Basalt fibres have outstanding properties. They can withstand temperatures of up to 800°C and are highly resistant to alkalis, acids, salts, oxidation and radiation. Drainage systems made of basalt-reinforced concrete will assure longer performance. Basalt fibres are mineral fibres that have a higher melting temperature, better resistance to water, acids and alkalis, and more positive flexural strength. The energy consumption during production also clearly speaks in favour of basalt fibres, as basalt it has the lowest CO 2 footprint. www.hauraton.co.uk

022 ATB RADIATORS - FIT FOR THE FUTURE.... Leading radiator manufacturer Stelrad has made huge strides to future proof its radiator products to meet the specific requirements of the new, lower temperature heating systems that are becoming the norm as heat pumps prove to be the leading option to replace traditional fossil fuel driven – gas, oil and LPG - heating systems that will be banned by the Government in all new build developments and homes from 2025 and it is anticipated will be banned in replacement heating systems in existing properties shortly after that date. Stelrad has developed and enlarged its series of K3 radiators – three panels and three fins on a radiator footprint that is scarcely larger than a traditional K2 design. It now offers K3 radiators in three stunning designs. Today’s modern radiators come in a selection of styles that make them a part of the décor in a room rather than simply a metal heating appliance to share heat in a room. And with the arrival of vertical radiators, the larger size radiators low temperature heating systems need can fit neatly into areas of the room where they take up much less in the way of a radiator footprint than traditional horizontal radiators do, which in the past tended to be sited under a window. www.stelrad.com

023 ATB BLUE SKY THINKING TRANSFORMS DISUSED BARN Blue Sky Barn is a fascinating conversion of a disused barn into a four-bedroom family home. Situated on a farm in England’s Norfolk, architects 31/44 have used form and materials to preserve the memory of the original agricultural structure in order to create a stunning new residential and leisure environment with enhanced levels of comfort and refinement. The house presents a quiet façade of corrugated metal walls and roof with vertical larch louvres. It is characterised by a calm restrained exterior and playful interior volumes, created on two floors within the 450sqm footprint of the original barn. The interior design fulfils the wish of the owners to preserve the original raw and cavernous character while avoiding overtly domestic finishes. With such a large spacious interior, including a 15m long swimming pool, the architects needed to find a solution for reverberating sound and acoustic dampening.
is a perfect choice for this kind of application. Consequently, Troldtekt Fine panels were specified for their sustainable characteristics coupled with superior acoustics to provide a comfortable interior environment. Founded on the Cradle-to-Cradle design concept and recently attaining Gold certification, Troldtekt’s natural and inherently sustainable panels are available in a variety of different surfaces and colours and contribute positively to a building’s BREEAM, DGNB and LEED ratings. In addition to their high sound absorption and tactile surface, they offer high durability and lowcost lifecycle performance. Available in various sizes and in four grades, from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. www.troldtekt.co.uk
As a result, Troldtekt’s wood wool panelling has been used throughout the living and pool areas to combat and soften elevated noise levels. Troldtekt

024 ATB HEATING CONTROLS: A PATH TO ENERGY SAVINGS Effective heating controls are an ever more vital part of an efficient central-heating system. And heating controls manufacturer ESi says it makes huge sense to look more closely at heating control selection. Clever use of controls can help minimise energy consumption by ensuring each room is at the right temperature for comfort, while avoiding overheating. The selection of programmers and timers available today are many and varied and range from the simple to the far more complex. ESi is typical in that it offers a range of programmers from a simple 1 Channel version to a 3 channel Multi-Purpose Programmer which enables the installer to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations by providing separate timed heating control for living and sleeping zones in a home, whilst also providing timed control of hot water. However, the ESi range all offer 24 Hour / 5/2 day and 7 day programming options for each channel. ESi provides a range of programmable room thermostats – both hard wired and wireless models. A seven-day timer makes it possible to set a different heating pattern for each day while 5/2 programming offers different options for weekdays and weekends. ESi’s ESRTP4 model provides true 7 day, 5/2 day or 24-hour programming options, with up to six time and temperature events being available each day and is OpenTherm compatible. www.esicontrols.co.uk

WRAPTITE® PROTECTS DIAMOND TOWER APARTMENTS IN CANARY WHARF An impressive build-to-rent development in the heart of Canary Wharf, London, has highlighted another incredible benefit of the high performing Wraptite® air barrier. The iconic Newfoundland building, also known as “The Diamond Tower”, rises 60-storeys above the Thames and is home to 636 apartments. Specialist contractor Sharpfibre provided fire stopping to the 636 apartments and common areas, installing Firetherm Intubatt and Intucompound and fire protection to the structural steels using Knauf FireTek 160. During construction, the structural steels were exposed to the elements until the contractor could install the cladding, which could have caused an issue due to declension. Knauf Fire-Tek 160 does not have any hydrophobic additives to prevent the insulation from wind-driven rain or moisture, so a solution was required to offer temporary protection from the elements. The answer was to cover the protected steels with the Wraptite airtightness membrane from the A. Proctor Group. Wraptite is designed as an effective vapour permeable air barrier to maximise the energy efficiency of buildings. The application of the Wraptite membrane provided class W1 protection from the weather/elements to the Fire-Tek and the exposed steel until the diamond shape façade was installed and completed. www.proctorgroup.com

SELECTAGLAZE CURVED ON PLAN UNITS CREATE A SPLASH AT KIDDERPORE HALL Working with Mount Anvil, a swimming pool area in a Grade II Listed home has been restored to its former grandeur, with the assistance of Selectaglaze sealed units and curved on plan secondary glazing. Kidderpore Hall sits looking over North London, in what was referred to as the Childs Hill neighborhood of Hampstead; once a relatively rural area. It has been beautifully reimagined through extensive refurbishment and brought back to a livable state as a single family home. One of the areas of the house which needed particular attention was a new pool and spa area in the basement. The original single glazed sash windows did little to provide heat retention. Selectaglaze secondary glazing was chosen to assist in upgrading the thermal insulation in this Grade II Listed building. To ensure maximum U-values were gained in this exposed corner of the building, 24mm double sealed secondary glazed units were required with obscure glass to provide privacy. Six window and one door were treated with Series 41 side hung casements, glazed with 4-16-4 gas filled sealed units. However, to match the sightlines of the bay window framing the jacuzzi, curved on plan units were specified. www.selectaglaze.co.uk

RUNDUM MEIR FAÇADE DOORS UNIQUELY REFLECT MANCHESTER LANDMARK’S HERITAGE
A bronze façade featuring integrated Rundum Meir garage doors for two new townhouses in central Manchester has been uniquely designed to reflect the architecture of the nearby John Rylands Library, one of the city’s most famous neoGothic buildings. Their full height bronze façade delivers a striking external appearance that takes a distinctive visual cue from the library, located opposite.
030 026 ATB
The houses are designed around an inverted living approach, enabling the architects to maximise the footprint of the site and use the space to its full potential. Above the garages are floors accommodating the bedrooms, with the living, dining and kitchen areas on the upper floors, and a rooftop courtyard/garden completing the arrangement. The aluminium façade of both townhouses features laser cut and acid-etched lacy blind tracery patterns that match those in the windows of the library. The lacy pattern extends over the full height of the façade which includes large folding/sliding shutters. These balance privacy with natural light requirements for residents during the day whilst being eye-catching at night as internal light shines through the laser cut pattern. This design extends into the twin side sliding sectional garage doors manufactured and installed by Rundum Meir, which effectively deliver a sliding façade at street level.

HELPING TO PRESERVE AN INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE Two former furniture factory buildings in East London have been transformed into high-end apartments with the help of Crittall windows. Long Street in the Hackney conservation area was a key component in Shoreditch’s industrial heritage. The area was once the heart of the capital’s furniture trade and, following the Second World War when large tracts of land were earmarked for comprehensive re-development, the then London County Council sought to preserve the district’s characteristic built environment as well as local business by constructing what were termed ‘flatted factories’. The four-storey structural steel-framed blocks were built in Long Street in 1959 with plenty of natural daylight and generously sized lifts for transporting uncut sheets of plywood to the upper floors.

The two blocks now form part of a luxury residential development, Long and Waterson. Architects Fletcher Priest have taken their design cue from the industrial lineage of the area, retaining original

external brickwork and window settings and adding two rooftop penthouse levels creating a total of 71 apartments. Crittall Corporate W20 and MW40 systems were specified, in fixed and opening format together with Crittall cold form tubular doors that meet the RC3 burglary resistance security standard; a choice that preserves both the original appearance and the industrial heritage of the area. www.crittall-windows.co.uk

Indeed, before starting on their apprenticeships, some of the candidates commented that they’d been unaware that PPD technicians ‘were a thing’. “Automatic doors, gates and entrances may be widely used within commercial and public buildings, enabling convenience and accessibility but awareness of the businesses that make, install and maintain them may not have been as prominent as it might, which has led to a skills gap within the industry. ADSA’s efforts to professionalise it through the provision of end-to-end learning and development opportunities should help attract and retain talent for the future.”

PERMEABLE PAVING FOR REGENERATION & SUDS
040 ATB
Low-intervention permeable paving overlays can transform worn-out paving and also deliver multifunctional sustainable drainage (SuDS), trees and numerous other benefits. To understand how, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the unique characteristics and attributes of modular concrete paving generally – as the trade body Interpave explains. Concrete Block Paving technology is based on high-strength, interlocking units installed with granular material filled joints and laying course. It enables small displacements between blocks, while retaining interlock, to create a particularly durable, very long-life surface over structural layers below. Decades of use internationally have demonstrated its suitability for the most taxing applications. A wide choice of shapes, styles, colours and finishes – including natural aggregates – add a richness, diversity, visual interest and a human scale to the urban environment. Re-usable Block Paving - Concrete Block Paving is slip-resistant, durable, strong and sustainable. Modular concrete paving delivers fast, low-cost installation and replacement, using weatherindependent, ‘dry’ construction. There are no curing, hot-work or noxious fume problems and only small plant and equipment is needed, with noise and disturbance minimised. With an extremely long lifespan, blocks can be taken up and re-used without processing for repairs, changing layouts, or new schemes – saving carbon and meeting ‘circular’ economy’ criteria.
40
Concrete Block Permeable Paving (CBPP) enhances this technology as a well-established, multi-functional SuDS technique. It simply combines self-drained, safe and attractive surfaces for a wide range of applications with attenuation, storage, pollution treatment and conveyance of rainwater runoff. The difference with CBPP is angular aggregate – not sand – used to fill enlarged joints and as a laying course. Then, pavement layers of voided material below accommodate water, whilst still providing structural performance. CBPP can also accept additional runoff from adjacent impermeable paving and roofs. The Key to Successful SuDS - By its very nature, CBPP requires no additional land-take for water storage or management, and no gulleys with related pipework. Its unique capabilities include source control and delivering a gradual flow of clean water, for example to open SuDS features, for amenity or biodiversity, to drainage systems or into the ground. More than 25-years usage has proven its adaptability on projects ranging from footpaths to container terminals. Both construction and wholeof-life costs of CBPP have been shown to be lower than for conventional paving and drainage, and it requires only limited, straightforward maintenance without clogging problems. It’s important to remember that CBPP is unlike – and not to be confused with – permeable materials, which behave very differently. Innovative Overlays - Concrete Block Permeable Paving Overlay is a deceptively simple, innovative approach to retrofitted CBPP, delivering SuDS as part of low-intervention repair, maintenance or regeneration. The CBPP upper layer is applied as an overlay onto the original structural road or paving base. In many cases, it can simply run kerb-to-kerb to form a shared surface level with the footway and flush kerb top. This approach also enables low-cost improvement works – perhaps as part of creating traffic calming, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods or Homezones. The same blocks and grit bedding layer and jointing material as for permeable pavements generally are used. Water is attenuated, treated and conveyed within the laying course, enabling filtration of silt and retention/treatment of pollutants without clogging. A gradual flow of clean water can then be released near the surface, meeting SuDS requirements. This approach provides numerous benefits including: • Interception losses, managing runoff during regular rainfall events • Attractive, popular surfaces with no puddles or potholes, for user safety • Maximising re-use of existing roadbase and its embodied carbon • Optimising the original drainage regime, but below the surface • Low-intervention, low carbon, no-heat retrofit installation • Long-life with minimal maintenance and low whole-of-life cost • No open gulleys – wildlife-safe
• Integral water filtration, with debris/litter remaining on the surface • Straightforward access to below-ground services • Sustainable re-use of blocks for reinstatement or changed layouts. Refurbishment and Green Infrastructure - CBPP and trees, and other planting, have been proven to work together in synergy. CBPP – whether full-construction or in overlay form – can collect rainfall away from the canopy and convey it to the tree. It can then simply discharge horizontally into a raingarden, perhaps with overflow into an existing gulley. The raingarden stores water during heavy rain for SuDS, retains soil moisture during dry weather and provides additional water quality, as well as irrigation. Alternatively, CBPP can be used over standard tree pits, proprietary tree planters, ‘Stockholm System’ or other structural soil installations, enabling irrigation and simple gas (oxygen/carbon dioxide) exchange essential to trees – without additional reservoir units or pipes requiring maintenance. CBPP also avoids tree root disruption common with other paved surfaces.
041 ATB
This approach is exemplified in Bridget Joyce Square, London, where a typical, adopted asphalt street and adjacent parking areas were transformed for community use, with CBPP overlay shared surfaces discharging to tree-planted raingarden basins. The basins provide water storage for SuDS to reduce overloading existing drains as well as for irrigation. Interpave revisited the project around 5 years after completion and noted that the permeable paving was performing well and experienced no problems during recent extreme summer storms. Tests were also carried out demonstrating that infiltration rates of the permeable paving were more than double those recommended by ‘The SuDS Manual’ (CIRIA, 2015). The trees and other green infrastructure were healthy, substantial and particularly wellestablished. A case study exploring Bridget Joyce Square is available on Interpave’s website and other innovative project case studies will be published shortly. www.paving.org.uk

HOW TO SPECIFY OUTDOOR POWER DISTRIBUTION UNITS TO MEET ANTICIPATED DEMAND Adding a power supply infrastructure to an outdoor public space, such as a courtyard or enclosed garden, is an excellent way to unlock the potential for holding events and creating more revenue-generating space. But how can you ensure that the proposed power supply will meet the demands and needs of the site given the versatility that comes when an outdoor space is power-connected? Over-specifying the services infrastructure and distribution units could be a costly mistake. But under-specifying could result in the need to hire temporary generators or run lengthy trailing cables from adjacent buildings, creating avoidable trip hazards. Whether you are a site owner or an architect or landscape architect working to enhance an outdoor space, the starting point is to ask three basic questions about demand and needs: 1) How do you envisage that your proposed power unit or power distribution system will be used? 2) How many power sockets will be needed? 3) Would the location also benefit from a supply of water or data connectivity? 42
Designing-in versatility - Equipping any outdoor space with a power infrastructure is going to add a great degree of flexibility of use to the location. But when designing the power supply, it is important to have a picture of the typical and maximum usage that will be required. Going back to basics, why is the site going to benefit from a power infrastructure? For a business such as a restaurant, bar, café or hotel, the outdoor space could add additional areas for eating and drinking primarily. Such uses would typically require the power distribution to provide access to sockets for lighting, till points, AV equipment or outdoor serving
The type of power unit you choose will depend on how the site will need to look or be used when the space is not being used for events, catering, etc. Both the pop-up and in-ground units can be hidden away when they are not in use, with the only evidence being a cover which can be designed to match surrounding surface materials. A power bollard has a permanent presence, but the designs available from Pop Up Power Supplies® are elegant to avoid the utilitarian appearance that would be expected with a typical feeder pillar. What should each power unit provide? - Consider what the electricity demand will be for the equipment that is to be connected to ensure the power supply units can handle the load. This is an area where Pop Up Power Supplies® has a wealth of expertise to help, given our experience of providing power units for a diverse range of sites across the UK, from Caerphilly Castle visitor centre to Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge pitch. The retractable power units available from Pop Up Power Supplies® can be specified to provide a total power supply from as little as 63 amps right up to 600 amps. In ground units offer the option of 63 amps or 125 amps and power bollards provide up to 125 amps. The sockets in all can be configured to suit usage requirements.
points such as mobile counters or drinks dispensers. But is that the limit to such a site’s potential? Could it also be used as a stage are for outdoor music performances and other entertainment, for example. And if so, would your proposed power supply solution accommodate these requirements too? Also think about the location of the power units in relation to how they will be used.
These units can also be designed to provide a water supply or data connectivity. Access to water can be particularly useful for ground maintenance and cleaning purposes, so consider that too and the units can become extremely useful assets. www.popuppower.co.uk
If the site is to be used for market stalls, where will the stalls be set up on site and where will the main pedestrian routes be? Installing power units in the correct locations will help reduce the risk of trip hazards as cables trailing across the main footfall areas can be minimised or avoided completely. Once you have a picture of how the site could be used, it is time to consider how you feed power to the locations across the space. This can be achieved with the installation of a Pop Up Power Supplies® power distribution unit in one of three forms: 1) Pop up, retractable power unit – this is submerged in the group until it is needed, and raised/lowered using a turning handle. 2) Flip-lid, in ground power unit – this is permanently submerged in the ground with access provided via a flip-lid which can be used while the lid is locked down. 3) Power bollard – a street furniture element which has power sockets integrated, accessible as required behind a lockable cover.

STO’S EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION SYSTEM AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE FAÇADE PAINT HELP BRING NEW INNOVATION STUDIO TO LIFE
A
new state-of-the-art business incubation building in Dorset has been completed with the use of an integrated package of Sto thermal insulation and external render and paint products. The company’s StoTherm Vario and StoTherm Classic insulation systems were specified for the new Innovation Studio at the Arts University Bournemouth, along with StoSilco exterior render and StoColor Dryonic façade paint. The new Innovation Studio now provides a base for digital and creative start-up businesses, providing support with their research, innovation and development initiatives. “This is an important building, part-funded by the Dorset LEP,” explains Tim Culverhouse of project architects, CRAB Studio. “It needed to combine a very specific mix of internal facilities with a modern, dramatic, external appearance that reflected the creative nature of the occupants.”

44
The cost-effective StoTherm Vario system installed onto this unique two-storey building has an efficient single-leaf construction that provides excellent thermal performance whilst also protecting the external wall surface from weathering. A mineral bonding and reinforcing mortar was used to adhesively fix the insulation to the cement particle boards and lightweight steel frame, and the system was able to accommodate the curved substrates which feature in the building’s design. Although an alternative insulation system was originally considered, it was decided that Sto solutions could provide the same thermal performance, but also deliver cost benefits.
StoTherm Classic K insulation was also specified for certain parts of the building. “We needed a different solution for some areas,” adds Tim Culverhouse. “These sections carry painted murals, and we wanted those to extend right down to the bottom of the walls, so the insulation had to extend down below the damp-proof course." "The StoTherm Classic K was perfect for this. It didn’t require any additional expansion joints, and so created a smooth surface onto which the murals could eventually be added. The murals now appear to ‘flow’ down into the ground and create a striking visual effect.” A reinforcing coat with embedded reinforcing mesh was applied to the insulation, followed by the StoSilco K1.0 silicone resin render, to add extra protection. This genuine silicone resin-based render is robust, durable and provides a very high

degree of CO2 and water vapour permeability, to reduce the risk of interstitial condensation. The overall external façade system was completed with the application of Sto’s innovative StoColor Dryonic façade paint in yellow and orange shades. This unique paint uses principles borrowed from nature to create a surface which simultaneously repels water and channels it away, to encourage the surface to dry more rapidly and protect against the growth of algae and unsightly staining. The façade will look exactly the way the architect had planned, and will go on looking that way for many years to come, with far less maintenance than any conventional alternative would require. www.sto.uk

STO RENDER SYSTEM SPECIFIED FOR NEW PASSIVHAUS DEVELOPMENT
S
to’s StoRend Flex render system was specified for use on a high-profile development of luxurious and sustainable homes built in Norfolk. Located five miles from Norwich city centre, the six new Octagon Park homes are designed to meet the requirements of the Passivhaus Plus standard, while delivering outstanding quality and a high level of sustainability. “In order to minimise energy consumption, the Passivhaus Plus standard sets out very specific criteria for construction, insulation and ventilation systems,” explains Sto’s head of sales, Ashley Wainwright. “This meant that the materials specified had to satisfy extremely demanding performance standards, and the StoRend Flex render system was certainly able to achieve this.” The Octagon Park development was created by JR Cozens Wiley Ltd, and the properties feature a timber-frame construction, which had a direct bearing on the specification of the StoRend Flex system. “An alternative render system was originally considered for the project,” adds Ashley.

“However, this would have required the inclusion of many vertical and horizontal movement joints at every door and window aperture. Fortunately, these weren’t necessary with the Sto system, so it was ideal for this purpose as it helped simplify both the design and construction processes while still
“The boards can be installed quickly and easily and can be cut without the need for power tools,” comments Sebastian Slomkowski of Passivhausapproved S.I.R.S. Ltd of Norwich who installed the Sto materials. “They can also weigh up to 50% less than other render boards which makes them easy to handle and install.” The addition of StoArmat Classic Plus, a cement-free, acrylic resin-based reinforcing coat – which is up to 15 times more flexible than traditional cement-based reinforcing coats when embedded with Sto Glass Fibre strengthening mesh - provided exceptional levels of crack resistance.

The system was then finished with a stippled StoSilco render and StoColor Dryonic façade paint that promotes fast and efficient drainage of water, allowing the surface to dry rapidly and greatly inhibiting the appearance of algae, fungus and unsightly marks. www.sto.co.uk
The StoRend Flex synthetic render system provides a highly flexible, rugged and crack-resistant exterior render finish which was in-keeping with the highquality nature of the Octagon Park development. The render itself was applied to Sto’s own StoVentec render carrier boards, which were fixed to the timber frames of the buildings. Being made from recycled glass granulate, the StoVentec render carrier boards are dimensionally stable, so thermal movement is minimized and the need for movement joints can be reduced, and often eliminated completely. Widely regarded as an industry benchmark solution, StoVentec board has been specifically developed for use with Sto render products.

THE SKY'S THE LIMIT FOR THE RIVERSIDE MUSEUM, GLASGOW, WITH THE HELP OF BILCO UK Housing the Glasgow Museum of Transport, one of the UK’s foremost transport and technology collections, the Riverside Museum reflects Glasgow’s historic role as a centre of shipbuilding, train manufacturing and engineering. Previously located in a former tram depot on the Glasgow South Side, the Transport Museum’s exhibits have moved to The Riverside Museum, designed by renowned architect, Zaha Hadid. The museum’s iconic and beautiful design dominates its riverside location, whilst paying homage to the heritage of its surroundings. Crucial to the museum’s flowing design is its roof, which curves and undulates and continues around the east and west sides of the building to constitute the majority of the external structure. Silver-grey zinc panels complete the effect, placing the building firmly in the context of the River Clyde.

Specialist contractor Sharpfibre provided fire stopping to the 636 apartments and common areas, installing Firetherm Intubatt and Intucompound and fire protection to the structural steels using Knauf Fire-Tek 160. During construction, the structural steels were exposed to the elements until the contractor could install the cladding, which could have caused an issue due to declension. Knauf Fire-Tek 160 does not have any hydrophobic additives to prevent the insulation from winddriven rain or moisture, so a solution was required to offer temporary protection from the elements.

STO ACOUSTIC SYSTEM HELPS RESTORE HISTORIC LONDON ART GALLERY The acoustic performance of a major London landmark building was upgraded using the StoSilent Distance acoustic system. Hayward Gallery at London’s Southbank Centre underwent a complete refurbishment, and the StoSilent Distance system helped create a new and dramatically improved acoustic environment for this worldrenowned art gallery. The 66 pyramid-shaped skylights which originally featured on the building had become damaged over time, while internally, a series of impractical sound-absorbing baffles and a translucent suspended ceiling had been used below them. The aim was to remove the suspended ceiling, reclaim the original height of the gallery spaces, and allow more natural light to enter. The pyramid roof lights were reconstructed using modern materials, and this meant that reliable acoustic treatment needed to be fitted into the coffer spaces below them in order to create the required acoustic environment. Unlike conventional acoustic treatments which use exposed grid and tile systems and offer limited design possibilities, the StoSilent Distance solution allows the creation of modern, clean, monolithic and seamless solutions, and can accommodate unusual design features such as the gallery ceiling and its pyramid-shaped skylights. StoSilent Distance was installed in the deep acoustic coffers which sit below each of the pyramid skylights. www.sto.co.uk

LANDMARK LEWISHAM PROJECT USING A1 MAGPLY FOR FIREPROOF PATTRESS INSERTS A significant new high-rise residential project in the London Borough of Lewisham is being built to provide high quality social housing, with the design of the structure prioritising the use of noncombustible materials: including the choice of A1 rated Magply boards for pattresses within the external walls. The development at Creekside in Deptford is being built to create a total of 56 one, two and three bedroom apartments, including three specially equipped units on the lower levels of one block for those with mobility issues. Within all of the high specification homes, pattress blocks cut from 18mm sheets of Magply boards are being fitted to the reinforced concrete structure’s infill of heavy gauge steel studs. The pattresses are being positioned to support kitchen cupboards and bathroom units as well as radiators throughout the eight and 10 storey buildings. Independently certified to offer a range of performance benefits. Magply MOS boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products which normally only offer a Euroclass D or E rating. Importantly the pull-out strength for 18mm Magply is in the range 3.45-4.00 Kn/m2. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used as a substrate board for the direct application of proprietary render systems, as well as for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups. www.magply.co.uk

HOWE GREEN ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH CROSSRAIL CONTRACTOR, DMC CONTRACTS
As Europe’s largest current infrastructure project, spanning over 60 miles via 41 different stations, the Elizabeth line will transform rail transport for London, with annual expected passenger levels reaching 200 million. The landmark project has seen the construction of 42km of new tunnels and the development of 10 new stations, with 31 existing stations also undergoing extensive upgrades. As part of the formation of the central line, which spans from Westbourne Park to Plumstead and Pudding Mill Lane, official Crossrail contractor and one of the UK’s leading fit-out contractors, DMC Contracts, has installed over 1,500 Howe Green Floor Access Covers throughout seven stations. This includes Whitechapel, Farringdon, Paddington, Bond Street, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway and Acton Mainline, where over the last five years DMC Contract’s team of engineers have also installed over 30,000 square metres of Terrazzo and Granazzo floor tiles. Howe Green’s 7500 Series stainless steel Floor Access Covers have been installed throughout the ticket halls, walkways and main concourses of each station to provide engineers with secure and concealed access to underfloor services, whilst the tamper proof construction also prevents unauthorised access. This is due to the cover’s unique design, which features unobtrusive barrel cover lifting points that can only be accessed with specific

CUPA PIZARRAS SUPPLIES CONTEMPORARY RAINSCREEN CLADDING SOLUTION FOR IMPRESSIVE LONDON HOME
C
UPA PIZARRAS has been heavily involved in the development of a new self-build residential property in North West London. The manufacturer was initially approached due to its range of natural slate façade designs, with its CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard system eventually specified to create an impressive and striking façade. Located in Dollis Hill, the property is situated next to a housing estate and opposite an existing slate clad façade, while views to the rear give the illusion of a peaceful woodland setting. The designers sought to create a family home with a highend exterior finish that felt like an escape from London, while also working well with the surrounding structures. Early on, natural slate was identified as a material that could help to create an attractive contemporary façade around the rear, sides and the upper elevation of the

front of the property. It was also crucial that the façade would act as a rainscreen cladding system so the project team approached CUPA PIZARRAS about its CUPACLAD® natural slate rainscreen cladding. The project team visited Taylor Maxwell’s London Bridge showroom – the exclusive distributor of CUPACLAD® in the UK - to discuss options with the Taylor Maxwell and CUPA PIZARRAS teams as well as view a CUPACLAD® sample wall. This session helped to establish that the CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard system was the ideal solution. A fully BBA approved system, CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard is 100% non-combustible and offers a lifespan of over 100 years. Following the initial consultation, CUPA PIZARRAS worked closely with the project team, including carrying out a number of site visits.
059 ATB
The use of CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard was kept in mind throughout the design process, with the dimensions of the slate determining the placement of windows, vents and corners. This meant that when it came to construction, it was a simple installation process with minimal wastage and resulting in a clean finish. The CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard system is constructed from horizontal aluminium profiles, mechanically fastened to an aluminium sub frame support. Once fixed in place, the rows of natural slate are clipped on, and in the case of the Dollis Hill property, using visible fixings to create an attractive pinstripe effect. “The product looks fantastic in-situ on this project,” commented Tom Ward, Cladding Product Advisor at Taylor Maxwell. “The dark grey slate rainscreen cladding provides a striking colour contrast with the refurbished light brown timber fencing and complements the property’s black aluminium windows and glazing.” www.cupapizarras.com/uk/

A HISTORIC SLATE INSTALLATION FIT FOR LEADERS OF THE WORLD AT THE G7 SUMMIT
C
UPA PIZARRAS has been specified across a major development and refurbishment at Tregenna Castle. The company’s products were selected for their ability to endure extreme local weather and provide an exceptionally long lifespan. Delivering spectacular views of the St Ives coastline, the Castle Approach Estate is a new collection of lodges built in the grounds of the historic Tregenna Castle Resort. Looking to complete the exclusive lodges, roofing contractor, Summit Roofing Solutions utilised a number of CUPA PIZARRAS’ products. Likewise, the project team also chose to use the company’s natural slate to complete a renovation of Tregenna Castle’s original roof. The lodges and castle are subject to difficult coastal conditions, including extreme winds and sea spray. As such, the project team needed access to roofing solutions that could deliver long-lasting, durable performance. Likewise, given Tregenna Castle’s status as a Grade II listed property, the team had to ensure that any selected products were able to deliver a traditional aesthetic, whilst still providing modern performance. Fortunately, CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate was able to meet all the desired criteria.
62
063 ATB Therefore, roofs on the lodges at Tregenna Estate exclusively used CUPA PIZARRAS’ 400mm x 200mm CUPA 12 natural slates, fixed using 100mm stainless steel hooks that were also produced and supplied by CUPA PIZARRAS. Notably, Summit Roofing Solutions was able to install the natural slate as a closed mitred hip system. In doing so, the project team ensured that all slates lined up perfectly with one another, which is only possible on account of the products’ uniform size and quality. This was particularly important on the lodges, where sections of roof were stepped down in certain locations and visible from ground level. Speaking on the project at Tregenna Estate, Adam Palmer, Company Owner of Summit Roofing Solutions commented: “Upon receiving the brief, we recognized that CUPA PIZARRAS’ solutions could help us to meet all key project goals. What’s more, the company helped us to overcome logistical challenges.”
In anticipation of the event, enhanced security provisions were put in place on the site, which made the logistical side of the project more difficult. Thankfully, through its extensive distribution network, CUPA PIZARRAS was able to devise a well-considered delivery and logistics plan to ensure that supplies could reach the project team at critical times. CUPA 12 was chosen for this prestigious project as it is a high quality dark grey slate with a smooth finish. With a life span of more than one hundred years and very little maintenance required, natural slate is a durable, weatherproof product, un-matched by artificial alternatives. CUPA 12 has also received approval from Snowdonia National Park as a Welsh Slate alternative and has been certified by BRE Global as A+ for its quality, transparency, and sustainability credentials. www.cupapizarras.com/uk/

ailey Streetscene was appointed by Bowmer and Kirkland to deliver a complete external furniture range for a new extension to Fosse Retail Park. Bowmer & Kirkland have a long history with the location having built the original shopping destination in 1989. The development has 9 new retail units, a newly redeveloped food court with space for 16 food & drink establishments and a large car park to facilitate including electric car charging bays. Bailey Streetscene’s knowledge and guidance was key for the project with the need for cycle parking and shelters, bespoke litter bins, bollards, seating, and a number of substantial Inspira Planter units to run along the front of the newly built retail units. The flexible design of the Inspira Planter System played a huge role in meeting the aesthetics and environmental aspect of the scheme. The planter system can create planter beds to most sizes required. At Fosse some of the planter’s span over 36 metres in length and can hold up to 64 tonnes of soil providing 103m3 of planting beds for all year-round foliage to provide a biodiverse and visually attractive outcome. When combined with the green walls, insect hotels and wildflower areas form a large part of the 54,000 sq ft of greenery at the site.
64
065 ATB The curved Inspira Form design was also utilised to surround the circular retail spaces - Inspira Form allows for more organically shaped installations creating a visually attractive and unique planter bed. The chosen finish for the planters was Corten, a natural weathered steel that requires little or no maintenance and is fully recyclable at the end of its lifespan. It complements the surrounding architecture alongside the Timber cladding of the buildings. The planter beds are dotted with integrated timber topped seating elements - some of which serve a multipurpose as storage units for power outlets and sprinkler controls. To continue its environmental considerations, the retail park specified a considerable number of cycle parking spaces to encourage and promote travel to the area via bicycle. Bailey Streetscene's Heron Shelter provides cover for the bikes. It features a simple cantilever design with ample space beneath for manoeuvrability. A custom Litter Bin was designed for the location, featuring a powder coated frame with a timber fronted door with laser cut lettering to identify its waste type. The bin units stand together in rows of 3 to divide waste up appropriately. Deacon Cube timber benches are dotted around the park. www.bsfg.co.uk

Yeoman Rainguard manufacturing facilities helped to offer additional benefits to the build by being able to specially design external angles and stop end units in one piece. The units reduce the amount of jointing required therefore limiting the possibility of points of leakage in the gutter run. A bespoke aluminium Fascia/Soffit was also designed for the new build again adding to the immaculate finish and maintenance free advantages of the property’s exterior. FRAMEPRO® W1 CHOSEN FOR PASSIVHAUS PLUS HOUSING PROJECT IN CARDIFF The FramePro W1 air barrier system from the A. Proctor Group has been chosen for a new modular Passivhaus Plus housing project in Cardiff. This innovative project will provide essential housing for Cardiff’s homeless population. It is designed by Beattie Passive using its award-winning, patented design and build system, which the company says is the UK’s first certified Passivhaus Complete Build System. The development consists of 48 one, two and three-bed apartments with two ancillary office buildings. The three modular housing blocks provide complete flexibility. Satisfying Cardiff’s immediate requirement to provide housing for people and families in temporary accommodation, in later years, the modules can be dismantled, reconfigured and assembled to suit the demographic needs of the city at that time. The FramePro W1 system was chosen as an external air barrier. The system comprises FramePro W1, a low-resistance vapour permeable air barrier for walls, plus Wraptite® Tape. Another benefit of the FramePro W1 system is that applying it externally simplifies the process, maintaining the building’s integrity, as there are fewer building services and structural penetrations to be sealed. www.proctorgroup.com

070 ATB HAURATON CHANNELS DRAIN BLUE BADGE SCHEME PARKING BAYS AT RHS WISLEY The first phase of The Welcome Building and surrounding landscape at Royal Horticultural Society gardens, Wisley, Surrey has transformed the experience for visitors to the gardens with buildings including a spacious arrivals hall, café, shop, plant centre and a 100 seat restaurant. There are now three large car/coach parks including Blue Badge scheme easy access bays for visitors in park two. One hundred metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, 9mm HEELSAFE slot gratings, was used by groundwork subcontractor GPB Construction Ltd to drain the asphalted Blue Badge parking bays for visitors. The channels were installed between the bays and the path leading to the entrance of the new arrivals hall. The material, PA-GF used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight. Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of cars and commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its black colour.

The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE slot grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R&D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any crossflow over the grating. The RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel component is made from 100% recycled polypropylene (PP). The six sizes offered are 160mm wide and range in height from 75mm to 250mm with the FIBRETEC® grating factory fitted on all models. As the largest unit is only 5.8kg, the channelling is easily handled and quickly installed on site. www.drainage-projects.co.uk
HOSPITAL SPECIFIES TITAN LITE™ 120:60 FROM FIREFLY An 18-month contract being carried out by a leading UK fire contractor has involved installing large quantities of the TITAN Lite™ 120:60, manufactured by TBA FIREFLY™, to create fire barriers above ceiling voids throughout many parts of the hospital. The refurbishment work was carried out by Plymouth based Ventro Ltd. Following early appraisals of the fire protection requirements within the ageing property, the hospital’s estates department decided to raise the specification for the work from 30 minutes integrity rating to a full two hours. The Site Agent for Ventro, John Roberts, commented: “As a specialist fire contractor working across the whole of the UK and beyond, we have employed Firefly products on many projects over the years and expect to continue doing so. Despite the large number of services making the number of penetrations to be deal with quite challenging, our teams find the Firefly relatively easy to install.” FIREFLY™ TITAN Lite™ 120:60 has been developed as a flexible fire barrier to provide compartmentation of larger concealed spaces within different types of buildings including factories, warehouses and railway stations. TITAN Lite™ 120:60 exceeds the minimum requirements relating to Fire Barriers as detailed in the UK Building Regulations: Approved Document B (Fire Safety). Firefly is manufactured using specially treated woven glass fibre fabrics. www.tbafirefly.com

MAGPLY FEATURES IN FIRE-FIGHTING ROLE AT SKY STUDIOS ELSTREE Magply boards are being used as part of Sky’s efforts to create the world’s most sustainable film and TV Studios, Sky Studios Elstree. Currently under construction by main contractor BAM, the build has recently included the use of 9mm thick Magply boards as part of a flat roof build up specified for the product’s proven fire-protection capabilities and all-round performance benefits. The work on the new production buildings is being carried out by London based Waterproofing specialist, Guaranteed Asphalt Ltd. which is installing their BBA Agrement certified hot melt flat roofing system over a reinforced concrete deck with the Magply boards being used to protect the mineral wool insulation. The Magply boards were secured in place over the 300mm thick StoneWool insulation using an adjustable length TIA fixing from the SFS range: drilling down into the concrete substrate. The fixing consists of a mushroom-type plastic sleeve which inserts in the bore hole, followed by a secondary concrete screw that is dropped into the sleeve, which is driven into the deck. Magply MgO boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used for flooring and pitched roof installations as well as being approved by many different manufacturers of render finishes as a suitable substrate. www.magply.co.uk
