LATEST PHASE OF THE SHAFTESBURY THEATRE TRANSFORMATION COMPLETES

T

he Shaftesbury Theatre has completed the latest phase of its 10-year transformation programme. A new bar and events space has been created at basement level below a brand-new public space delivered as part of the London Borough of Camden's West End Project.

007 ATB

These latest updates are part of a masterplan conceived by Bennetts Associates, working with the theatre's owners, Theatre of Comedy Limited. Completed phases include the award-winning flytower extension, upgrading auditorium ventilation, remodelling of the bars, increasing numbers of toilets, reseating the main auditorium at stalls level, and providing lift access to the stalls for the first time in the theatre's history. Each phase has been delivered with minimal disruption to the theatre's busy performance schedule. Dating from 1911 and with a seating capacity of 1400, the Grade II Listed Shaftesbury Theatre is one of the West End's major receiving houses for large-scale musical theatre. (cont...)

THE DESIGNERS

(cont...) Like most theatres of its time, the Bertie Crewe-designed theatre maximised its auditorium footprint on a tight plot, leaving little space for the bars and facilities modern audiences have come to expect. The original design reflected the norms of Edwardian society, dividing the audience by social class and providing separate entrances and stairs for each group. The result was a building with too many stairs and too few bars and toilets. Bennetts Associates' design enables better utilisation of space, removing unnecessary stairs and using the space gained to create improved visitor facilities and accessibility at every level. The theatre's stage and its stalls are below ground. With nearly half the audience seated at this level and no dedicated foyer they were poorly served by bars and toilets. As part of Bennetts Associates masterplan, a subterranean extension has now been created to provide additional space for a new bar, toilets and events space which is stretched out under the pavement above. The road in front of the theatre was closed to improve the public realm as part of Camden's West End Project. This has resulted in a brandnew public space in front of the theatre known as Princes Circus.

008 ATB

8

The new below ground extension benefits from new rooflights integrated into the paving, whilst the ground floor foyers spill out into the new space with all-day seating. In addition to this, a feature staircase has been added which improves connectivity with the basement bar and creates a new architectural feature. The architectural approach taken by Bennetts Associates has been to create new spaces with a contemporary feel, exposing the ribbed concrete structure in the new basement bar and contrasting this with the brickwork of the existing theatre's old basement wall. The colour palette of sage green and dark timber reflects the original colours which would have been used as part of the theatre's original interior scheme back in 1911.

009 ATB

Simon Erridge, Director at Bennetts Associates, said: "This has been a significant project that we've been working closely with the client on for 10 years. This latest phase has seen the remodelling of the space to bring it up to date for the modern-day visitor, while remaining sensitive to the theatre's original features. The theatre now offers a wider range of facilities for the public visiting and also expands the services and activities that the building can offer in the future." www.bennettsassociates.com

BAKERHICKS PROVIDE MULTIDISCIPLINARY EXPERTISE FOR NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART ALLANDER LEISURE CENTRE

T

010 ATB

he new £42.5m Allander Leisure Centre in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, has officially opened its doors to the public, following completion of the first phase of works. The state-of-the-art facility benefitted from civil & structural and mechanical & electrical engineering expertise from BakerHicks, the multi-disciplinary design, engineering and project delivery company.

thick concrete slab to dampen the effects. The purpose of the building necessitated large open areas in the pool and sports halls, and in other areas such as the studio spaces and main reception area. To achieve this, BakerHicks’ structural team used large-scale steel long-span beams of up to 38 metres.

The new centre boasts two swimming pools, a fully-equipped gym, accompanying dance & exercise studios and spin rooms, plus an eight-court multi-sports hall, changing facilities and café. The main building also accommodates a range of support facilities for adults with learning disabilities. In addition, there is a hydrotherapy pool for use by people with learning disabilities, families with young babies, and people with mobility issues.

The stacked nature of the building added in an extra complexity, with, for example, one of the walls of the sports hall situated directly above the hydrotherapy pool. To enable the sports hall to have sufficient structural support, a series of transfer beams and structures was used, allowing the first-floor columns to be supported by heavy steel beams at first-floor level, whilst retaining the open-span area required for the hydrotherapy pool.

With the new facility being built next to the existing leisure centre, and water courses surrounding the site, the overall footprint of the project was restricted. As a result, a stacked design was preferred, with the sports hall situated on the first floor over the pool hall. Recognising the challenges this created, BakerHicks used 3D modelling to review and test the design and structures from the likelihood of vibration caused by hundreds of gym-goers’ feet thudding on the wooden floors on a daily basis. This meant increasing part of the composite floor slab from the 150mm thickness used elsewhere to a 240mm-

10

With sustainability and reducing carbon emissions on East Dunbartonshire Council’s priority list, BakerHicks’ mechanical and electrical team specified high-efficiency plant, ensuring the centre is as efficient as possible by reducing the overall amount of energy it uses.

Incorporating photovoltaics and CHP into the design further enhanced this. In addition, utilities were a key consideration throughout the project, with the high-pressure water pipes that supply the city of Glasgow being located on the site’s boundary. All the utilities needed to remain live throughout, both those surrounding the site and those supplying the existing leisure centre, which remained operational throughout the project. The team designed a new substation within the site to power the new facility plus electric vehicle charge points, requiring extensive planning to work with the utility constraints and ensure it did not become classed as high voltage. Neal Shaw, associate engineer at BakerHicks and civil & structural lead on the project, says: “This is a fantastic project that will provide its local community with exceptional sports and leisure facilities. Any project of this type is complex in its design due to the mixed and highly specialised uses of the building and the large open spaces this requires."

011 ATB

The next phase involves the decommission and demolition of the existing centre, with phase three seeing the installation of a new fabric-clad Sports Dome with two indoor football pitches and a tennis court, plus rapid electric vehicle charging points. BakerHicks are also currently working on the design of the new Blairgowrie Recreation and Leisure Centre, which incorporates Passivhaus design, and are providing civil & structural design for the new Eastwood Leisure Centre. www.bakerhicks.com

“Our previous experience in leisure centre design came to the fore and this is a project we can be really proud of. In addition, from RIBA 4 we were working in the midst of a global pandemic, which, on a project of this size, presented its own unique challenges. The whole project team really came together and, working closely with the local Council, we have created a legacy that we and the local people can be proud of.”

NUAIRE CREATES A STORM AT PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR CLEAN AIR DAY

STELRAD CPD PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE ON LINE

To mark this year’s Clean Air Day, UK ventilation solutions provider Nuaire is delighted to have participated in an awareness event at Jubilee Park Primary School in Newport. The Clean Air Day event was attended by 30 children from five local schools and featured several organisations helping students learn about the sources and dangers of pollution, and highlighting the importance of clean air.

014 ATB

Nuaire demonstrated its Drimaster-Eco Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system, which removes condensation and dampness from homes, but the star of the show was undoubtedly the Cyclone game where children had to grab as many ‘pollutant’ balls out of the cyclone within a set time! The interactive game was not only huge amounts of fun, but had a genuine purpose: it helped illustrate the need to remove pollution from the air we breathe, and provided a time based activity that is good for improving concentration. This year’s Clean Air Day theme is “Clean up the air to look after your mind”, encouraging people to find out more about how air pollution impacts our mental, physical and planet's health. www.nuaire.co.uk

FIS LAUNCH GUIDE TO DIGITAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT The Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) has launched new guidance – Introduction to the Golden Thread and Digital Information Plans - to help businesses in the finishes and interiors sector get to grips with all the jargon and new regulations associated with the golden thread and digitalisation of construction. A recent FIS Digitalisation Survey found that 60% of contractors and 44% of product manufacturers and suppliers do not understand what is needed to meet Digital/Golden Thread Requirements in the Building Regulations. In light of these findings, this new FIS guide has been designed to help product suppliers and contractors operating in the finishes and interiors sector cut through the complex terminology and begin to form their own digital plan of work. It draws on published information and principles set down in a myriad of technical and information standards and aligns this to the requirements set down in the Building Safety Act and wider reform of Construction Regulations. The new guidance provides an overview of the Building Safety Act 2022, the golden thread of information and the new regulatory framework. There is an emphasis on Stage 4 (Technical Design) and Stage 5 (Construction Information) of the RIBA Plan of Work. The guide brings clarity to digitalisation, the new common data environment (CDE) responsibilities and explains how to manage product data and what is needed in order to create a digital information plan. www.thefis.org

SET TO IMPRESS IN SHROPSHIRE WITH SCHLÜTER-SYSTEMS

022 ATB

T

ucked away in a beautiful town in Shropshire, overlooking the River Severn, sits a newly built three storey residential property. The home consists of several impressive features, including a cinema room, the open plan kitchen with its feature island which sits at approximately 6m long, and a home spa. Each of the five bedrooms benefit from large open plan ensuite bathrooms, with individual designs and colour schemes giving them all their own unique look. A total of seven bathrooms have been installed, including a swimming pool changing area. A range of Schlüter products have been used, not just in the bathrooms, but throughout the home, from tile edge protecting trims, to shower drainage and waterproofing. To provide simple level access in the bathrooms, Schlüter's KERDILINE-G3 linear drain has been used. The drain has a low height build-up of just 78mm, making it the ideal solution where there are more restrictive height requirements. The chosen channel cover for the KERDI-LINE-G3 drains were KERDI-LINE-D-G3, a frameless cover which allows for the tile to be integrated into the shower drain, making it a seamless and near invisible and enhancing the aesthetic appeal. To complement the use of Schlüter's linear drains, the preformed shower tray, KERDI-SHOWER-LTS creates the necessary shower fall. Combined, the KERDI-LINE-G3 and KERDI-SHOWER-LTS are the ideal pairing for creating a shower that has a flush transition between the shower area and rest of the bathroom.

22

They are specifically designed to work together to create simplified shower drainage and meet high performance requirements. Focusing on the importance of using the right products for a lasting installation of the shower areas, the KERDI range provides the necessary waterproofing to give the carefully chosen tiles a solid foundation for the years to come. What has been a real focal point for this project, is the way several of Schlüter's tile profiles (also known as trims) have been incorporated. In total, a combination of four different types of trim have been used, in a variety of finishes, each providing a different aesthetic that complements the tile and overall design of the room. Tile edge protection trims in the form of FINEC and JOLLY create a beautiful contrast to the chosen tile, whilst protecting the edges from chipping and cracks to increase the longevity whilst maintaining a beautiful appearance. The tiling contractor for this build has exceeded the owner's expectations with his work. Intricate details such as the use of a three-way corner point, where Schlüter-FINEC was used have really impressed the homeowners, who commented on how much they admired the appearance of this intricate detail. VINPRO has also been used as a transition profile between differing floor coverings. The use of this type of profile being especially important where there may be floor coverings of different heights or materials.

023 ATB

Whilst the use of Schlüter-TREP on the stairs in the spa area, and to the outside of the property, creates safe and visibly contrasted edge protection. Attention to detail has been a key aspect of this build throughout, and both the homeowners were keen to ensure the products used were going to match their exact requirements, both functionally and aesthetically. First reaching out to Paul Jackson, the local Area Specification Consultant, for advice on tile trim back in May 2022 and since then, exploring other products that could be incorporated. Of Paul's ongoing support and advice, the homeowner comments: "We love your product and you've been very helpful from the beginning. There was nothing you couldn't do for us". It was apparent that ensuring the best possible result for the protection and longevity of the tile installations was a key focus for the homeowners, who were making this dream home one they could live in for a long time. www.schluter.co.uk

ACOUSTICS HELP EATING IN COMFORT By their very nature of being large, open spaces with many hard surfaces, ambient noise levels in bars and restaurants tends to be high. This inevitably leads to customers talking louder to be heard and so begins a perpetual cycle of increased noise levels as everyone starts to have increasingly louder conversations. This, coupled with noise from music, kitchen machinery and HVAC services, can easily ruin the experience. To help combat the problems of reverberating sound, designers frequently specify acoustic ceilings to help to strike a balance between a lively and welcoming environment and an experience where the space is uncomfortably loud. This is important because customers’ comfort and a willingness to spend time and money is decreased in a noisy environment. A good example of this is the Chamberlain Hotel in London where sustainable and ethical designers Sibley Grove have used Troldtekt acoustic panels to counterpoint the reverberating noise reflecting from the stripped-back

024 ATB

architecture with its exposed structural columns, ductwork and concrete surfaces. Troldtekt acoustic panels are a perfect solution for this type of venue either as part of a suspended ceiling or individual ‘acoustic clouds’. They are available in a variety of different surfaces and colours and combine sound absorption with a tactile surface. With an expected life cycle of at least 50 years and resistance to humidity and impact, they are available in various sizes and four grades, from extreme fine to coarse. The panels can be left untreated or painted in almost any RAL colour. Depending on the panel specified, reaction to fire is classed in accordance with EN 13501 as B-s1,d0 or A2-s1,d0 respectively. Founded on the Cradle-to-Cradle design concept and having attained Gold certification, Troldtekt wood wool acoustic panels are manufactured using wood from certified forests (PEFC ™ and FSC ® C115450) and can contribute positively to a building’s BREEAM, DGNB or LEED points. www.troldtekt.com

QUICK TO BUILD, AFFORDABLE OFFICE HAS THE ‘WOW' FACTOR WITH EARTHY STERLINGOSB ZERO In need of a bigger space to work from, TMV architects harnessed its own team's design and build skills to create an office using a combination of West Fraser's SterlingOSB Zero and corrugated metal. Six years ago, the fledgling practice had outgrown its annex accommodation above a garage in the home of one of its directors and "we wanted our own building; something to give us an identity and space to accommodate clients." explains Thomas Mann, a director. The practice bought a plot of land which was occupied by a disused BT repeater station building in Cambridgeshire. Today, the brick repeater station building has been replaced with TMV's new office, a simple black, single-storey metal-clad contemporary building, complete with a pitched roof to accommodate a mezzanine floor. Budget was a major constraint when it came to the new building so TMV's design is based on a superstructure of locally-manufactured structurally insulated panels (SIPs). The panels consist of a 140mm insulating foam core sandwiched between two SterlingOSB Zero sheathing boards. The result is a building system that is extremely strong and energy efficient. Externally, the SIPs are clad in block corrugated metal sheets that lend the building a modern industrial aesthetic. That aesthetic is continued internally with a full-height gable wall featuring exposed SterlingOSB Zero. The SterlingOSB Zero feature wall's textured, organic finish is given additional emphasis by the crisp white plaster used to finish the adjoining walls. Mann says visitors often walk into the office and say 'wow', simply because OSB is a material they are not used to seeing in this context. https://uk.westfraser.com

STRONG AND STRIKING; THE APOLLO SURFACE FROM KÖNIGSTONE’S NEW ATHENA COLLECTION Further to the launch of The Athena Collection, Königstone will now focus on the individual surfaces and what each of them has to offer. First up is the mysterious, Apollo - the only surface of its kind in the collection due to its dark shade. As the design is printed onto the surface, the Athena Collection replicates the defined and intricate veining of natural stone more realistically than traditional Quartz. Königstone has chosen a light grey core colour for the Apollo so any drainer grooves and exposed edges creates a stunning contrast against the darker shade, as shown here. There are many benefits of adding a dark surface to a kitchen design; it becomes a focal point in the busy room while also being durable, easy-to-clean and stain-resistant. The surfaces in the Athena Collection illustrate the very latest innovations in engineered stone manufacturing. All materials are available book-matched, in a classical soft leather finish with a size of 3200 x 1600 x 20mm. www.konigstone.co.uk

CRISTALLO AZURE CREATES A ZEN-LIKE ATMOSPHERE THAT IS STRIKING

W

hen Melanie Leakey began thinking of what her dream kitchen would look like, bringing nature indoors and capturing the essence of shinrin-yoku - the Japanese art of forest bathing - was a priority. One of the newest additions to the CRL Quartz collection, Cristallo Azure, helped the team from Milestone Ecodesign fulfil the quite specific brief. The quartz surface, teamed with green paint for a feature wall, bamboo flooring and stone-effect Eco2 cabinets, helps transform the wrap-around extension on the back of a 1960s semi-detached house in the suburbs of Bradford into a zen-like space. “I wanted a really natural look and felt the azure blue would mimic a lake next to the trees, and it worked perfectly,” explains Melanie. Installed by Select Solid Surfaces

in Keighley, Cristallo Azure makes a stunning visual impression, while the durability of the quartz material ensures it will stay looking beautiful with minimal maintenance. The striking intensity of the sea-green colour makes it the perfect choice for this project, where it contrasts so well with the natureinspired décor around it. “Everyone has either worktops on the black/ white/grey spectrum or beige - we wanted to be a little different!” Melanie admits. Entering the newly created space from the existing house, the dining area accommodates a large glass-top table and seating, with bi-fold doors beyond leading out to the patio. To the right of the dining area lies the kitchen, with a long bank of tall units for storage on the rear wall and a kitchen island as a centrepiece.

Complete with hob, sink and bar stools and topped with Cristallo Azure surfaces it is this furniture that turns the room into the multi-functional space Melanie was hoping for.

“The new kitchen looks out onto our south-facing garden, so we wanted to have a kitchen island that incorporated the hob and sink so we could make the most of the views,” emphasises Melanie. “I also think it's rude to talk to someone with your back to them because you're stirring something on the hob!”

“The island is one of the aspects we are most pleased with. It does exactly what we wanted it to do, and it looks fabulous whilst it does it.” The chosen décor is a brave step away from the often-seen neutral tones of modern kitchen design, but there’s no doubt that the finished space is everything that Melanie and her family hoped for from the new space.

"We wanted a really social space where we could entertain guests without having to excuse yourself because you need to focus on making a meal, so wanted a couple of bar stools for the island so guests/ family could take a seat and talk to the chef whilst they make dinner.” CRL Quartz is the ideal surface for such a multi-functional kitchen area. A practical alternative to natural materials yet with all the beauty that the

As she concludes: “I think it is a combination of the use of natural materials and colours that work so harmoniously together, plus the fact that the kitchen is designed around the home chef - everything you need is either straight in front of you or only a few steps away. Plus, the use of the cabinets means everything can be tidied away leaving us with a clean, streamlined kitchen.” www.crlstone.co.uk

STO ACOUSTIC SYSTEM HELPS REFURBISHED TOWN HALL SOUND JUST RIGHT

A

140-year old Category A listed building which has been restored and redeveloped now boasts greatly improved acoustics thanks to the use of the StoSilent Distance ceiling system from Sto. The StoSilent Distance system was installed in the main hall area of the Town Hall building in Paisley, Scotland as part of the venue’s transformation. “The highly ornate design of the original ceilings meant that this was a complicated installation, especially given the number of people using the building and the large volume of ambient noise which they could generate,” explains Sto’s acoustics project manager, James Gosling. “A different solution was originally considered, but Sto’s specialist installer, Allied Interiors of Glasgow, recommended the StoSilent Distance system as a more appropriate and highly successful alternative. This underlines the valuable contribution which our installation partners often bring to a project such as this, with their extensive knowledge and expertise in the installation of Sto acoustic systems.” The transformation of the building will see its capacity expanded, improve the audience experience, add new performance facilities, and create rooms in previouslyunused spaces, and this required a highly practical and reliable acoustic solution. Featuring a versatile metal profile sub-construction, and acoustic panels manufactured from expanded glass granulate, the StoSilent Distance system proved to be the perfect answer, as it allows the creation of sound-absorbent walls and ceilings, in situations where existing structures, services or architectural detailing must be considered.

The Sto system can be used to create smooth and seamless finishes over large areas, inclined planes or curves, or to achieve sharp and consistent joints at upstands, all without any worry about cracks appearing in years to come, so it was ideal for installing the acoustic panels on both the flat and vaulted ceiling areas. “Aesthetic considerations were also extremely

PRESTIGIOUS OLD WAR OFFICE DEVELOPMENT SPECIFIES STYLE FOR ADAPTABLE ROOM SPACE The OWO hotel, previously the Old War Offices in London, opened for the first time to the public in Summer 2023 as the UK’s first Raffles Hotel offering 85 unique private residences, nine exciting restaurants, three iconic bars, Guerlain’s first London Spa and an active wellness by Pillar Wellbeing. Working with EPR Architects, and Ardmore Construction, partitioning expert Style was specified to sub-divide the impressive main ballroom with a 6.5 metre high Dorma Huppe Variflex semi-automatic moveable wall.

031 ATB

With an incredible 60dB acoustic rating, noisy events can take place either side of the wall without sound interference, and the operable wall has a chic fabric finish to perfectly complement the interior design of the room. Style also installed Dorma Hüppe’s unique i-Track system, designed to make the moving of tall moveable walls both simple and safe for the operator. Cleverly harnessing the kinetic energy created by panel movement, i-Track utilises that momentum to effortlessly facilitate a change in direction as each panel passes through the curves, into and out of the parking pocket. Track diverters are also used to manually program the carriers to automatically move each panel to the correct parking location. In addition, Style was also specified to install four more 59dB Dorma Hüppe Variflex semi-automatic moveable walls to create a series of flexible meeting rooms, enabling staff to quickly adapt the space depending on usage. Built on the historic royal site of Whitehall Palace, this is where Ian Fleming conjured up the idea of James Bond having been inspired by the building’s resident spies. It went on to feature in three 007 films as the MI6 headquarters, where M’s office was located, and between 2017 and 2023 it was lovingly restored. “It was a genuine privilege to have been chosen for one of the most iconic buildings in London,” said Style’s group managing director, Julian Sargent, “and it is testimony to the quality of our people, products and craftmanship that we were entrusted to work on this famous landmark.” www.style-partitions.co.uk

THE REALITY OF HEATING OUR HOMES IN THE FUTURE……… On the heating front, things have never been more interesting in the UK heating industry. Renewables are becoming more important by the day. The decision to ban the use of fossil fuel heating systems in new build homes from 2025 was the first serious change that made us all sit up and take notice. The possibility of fossil fuelled heating being banned even in replacement heating systems from 2035 seems likely if not earlier. It seems hugely sensible that in the circumstances we move towards a proven technology that uses renewable energy and which is already being installed extensively in mainland Europe, Scandinavia and in Canada. Heat pumps use latent heat from the air or the ground or from water – available in huge quantities and won’t run out. But at least we have workable and practical products to install. Air to Water Heat Pump (AWHP) systems – monoblocs or splits - present a variety of proven energysaving options for a home’s heating and hot water system. The terms ‘Split’ and ‘Monobloc’ refer to how the system is required to be set up in a home. A Monobloc is a bit like a combi boiler and is literally a ‘single block’ system, where the heat pump has all of its components - apart from the hot water cylinder which is installed inside the property located inside a heat pump unit situated outside the home. A Split heat pump unit has both an outside unit which incorporates the heat exchanger and refrigerant and an internal unit which sits inside the property, usually in a utility or boiler room. Most homes in the UK are ideal for a Monobloc air to water heat pump. A Split system is an option generally for more complex installations and it can

32

be installed up to 30m away from the home, which gives far more installation flexibility. These ASHP systems don’t produce water as hot as a traditional boiler will, as they generally only reach around 50°C at a maximum. But unlike the hot water produced by boilers they don’t need anything like as much cold water added to cool down the hot water for safe bathing and showering. And of course, many washing machines and dishwashers now operate effectively using colder water supplies. Air source heat pumps are perfectly suited to new build and existing homes that are well insulated. To be at their most effective, they operate well with either larger capacity – possibly K3 design - radiators or a higher number of radiators and or underfloor heating. A COP of 3 can be relatively easily achieved by an AWHP and 4 or above is possible for very well-designed systems. It’s possible to achieve a COP of around 4.5 from an LG Therma V system. We know that when heat pumps underperform below these levels, it is often the result of poor design, installation and maintenance. Heat pump technology is tried and tested and proven technology. Combined with other renewable technologies, such as solar, the genuine opportunities to switch from fossil fuelled homes to renewable driven systems is becoming a reality. BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY UPGRADES LIBRARY ACCESS WITH TORMAX As part of Bournemouth University’s ongoing commitment to improving the student and staff experience, TORMAX UK was recently contracted by Rocare Building Services Ltd to install a new automatic main entrance to the Sir Michael Cobham Library. Consisting of two sets of double-leaf automatic sliding doors, the outer doors open to welcome visitors into a lobby area before the inner doors slide apart to allow access into the library’s main reception. This configuration allows a smooth through-flow of pedestrians whilst also reducing heat loss from the building and contributing to a lower carbon footprint. With a full remodelling programme being implemented across the Campus, the Library now benefits from the installation of a second lift, new flooring in many areas, as well as the TORMAX automatic entrance. Ensuring quick response times to approaching foot traffic, as well as adaptable opening and closing speeds and hold-open time, the doors are powered by the Swiss-designed, TORMAX iMotion 2202 operators. Featuring a state-of-the-art microprocessor control unit, a user-friendly interface allows staff to adjust door movement to reflect foot traffic levels and external weather conditions. Reliability is assured thanks to a uniquely designed AC motor that doesn’t have any of the usual gears and brushes that tend to wear out, delivering a longer than average life-span. The smooth movement that the door drives generate is further enhanced thanks to vibration-absorbent mountings on the guide rails, ensuring whisper-quiet operation. www.tormax.co.uk

040 ATB RENAISSANCE FOR TRIED AND TRUSTED W20 STEEL WINDOWS As home renovation remains popular, and with the focus being on the acquisition and refurbishment of rural properties, this has resulted in Steel Window Association (SWA) members reporting a higher than usual demand for the replacement of the traditional W20 style windows The W20 closely replicates the appearance of the older universal suite of sections and can therefore be found providing reliable service from country cottages to dockland warehouses and in commercial, as well as industrial buildings. Not only do the slimline sections offer slender sightlines compared to PVC-U and timber frames, but their strength also provides good security and long-term robustness. In addition, the advancements made in glass technology and the availability of much improved weather-stripping means that the modern W20 window delivers far better energy performance than their single-glazed predecessors. The President of the SWA and Contracts Director at Associated Steel Window Services, Kris Bennell, comments: “W20 steel frames are the ever reliable, ever popular traditional option for the sector, which are liked by both planners and heritage bodies for use in a host of different property types. W20 is a system which can work in a summer-house or a commercial building in London and as a stylish room divider or shower screen.” The SWA offers UK wide coverage with member companies able to carry out the full range of contracts from the repair and restoration of heritage windows through to the installation of major fenestration packages in contemporary commercial, residential and other types of developments. www.steel-window-association.co.uk

CRITTALL'S WINDOW DISPLAY A town centre shopping mall in Stroud, Gloucestershire, has been given a new lease of life with Crittall playing a significant role in the makeover. Dransfield Properties opted for a complete transformation of the Five Valleys Shopping Centre to include new retail outlets, as well as enhanced car parking, office space and a community hub with library. Key to the interior appeal was replacing a jumble of disparate shopfronts and signage with a more ordered, modern appearance. Sheffield-based Dixon Dawson Architects selected Crittall W20 steel profiles for the task. “The client wanted a particular style of glazing. I was familiar with Crittall and saw it as the best solution,” said Guy Dixon Dawson. “The whole mall was remodelled; frankly it was a bit of a mess beforehand. Now, everything, ceiling to floor, has been upgraded.” The result is a simplified approach with Crittall’s slender steel profiled windows and doors providing a uniform appearance. All the cold form doors were a mix of hinged and automatic sliders www.crittall-windows.co.uk

COMPETENCY is not a Dirty Word Competence /ˈkɒmpɪt(ə)ns/ noun: competency def: the ability to do something successfully or efficiently The need for competency within the construction industry has never been more important than it is today. But capability is not just a basic requirement – it’s proof of skill and expertise. ADSA is committed to achieving this through continuous professional development: from entry-level apprenticeships and technical training, to NVQs at a variety of levels. It’s our reason for being, is at the heart of what we do, and has been for almost 40 years. So competence shouldn’t be a dirty word – it’s about the pursuit of excellence.

OUT OF THE BLUE – ADSA FIRMS UP COMPETENCY WITH NEW GUIDE The third Monday of January is known as ‘Blue Monday’. Around the same time, the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) will be launching its Blue Book – a ‘go to’ reference guide that promises to put a smile on everyone’s face. It is a one-stop reference source for technicians and the wider industry, a code of practice that brings together details of legislation and standards, competency and compliance for technicians and the wider industry. It is being produced within an A5 folder which will be presented to newly qualified technicians who successfully undertake the EN 16005 training course and examination.

042 ATB

It is therefore intended to consolidate learning and become a fact-checker for access and use on site, if required. The publication further boosts ADSA’s bid to increase levels of competence and professionalism and keep industry standards high, explains ADSA MD Ken Price. “It is the first time that ADSA has collated all this key information is one place and we have decided to produce it as a robust physical document that can be updated if legislation or standards change. By producing this in a ring binder format, sections can be removed and replaced as needed." “We hope that it will become part of a technician’s day-to-day toolkit, that will accompany them to jobs and be shown to customers if required. It will also be published online but we were mindful that technicians often visit some remote places, so being able to have a physical copy, should make it easily available.” The publication is part of ADSA’s ongoing commitment to maintain high industry standards through its people. The organisation is part of the Joint Competency Initiative (JCI) which was formed as a response to the Hackett Report and subsequent Building Safety Act. It is intended to achieve co-ordinated levels of competence across the construction industry.

42

The JCI recently put in place ‘super sector’ groups to provide focus and deliver work streams needed to make this a reality. Ken Price is leading the super sector group for the door industry, working with Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of the British Woodworking Federation and Bob Perry, Chief Executive of the Door Hardware Federation. Terms of reference for the sector group have been created and a qualifications questionnaire and gap analysis undertaken. Initial findings indicate a need for formal educational accreditation to ensure parity across the industry and a transparency around the process of attainment. Says Ken: “One of the key findings of the Hackett Report was an acknowledgement of skills, knowledge and behaviours as a model for competence but the industry has also highlighted the importance of experience within this mix, and moving forward we are applying a SKEB approach to all our learning and development." Alongside this, ADSA has undertaken a review of its Standards Renewal training to include new and improved content and greater rigour around final testing. It promises to be more interactive and dynamic – with video content involving those across the industry. It includes a refreshed Powered Pedestrian Door (PPD) and the Law module to support greater understanding of legislation and the requirements of the Supply of Machinery Safety Regulations (SMR08) along with more detail on safeguarding, identifying key hazards and methods of protection. Adds Ken: “We have identified key areas of learning and worked hard to make the course more interactive and engaging.” The final test will be more rigorous – with a longer and automatically randomised test. Each candidate will be presented with 30 from a possible 150 questions, providing a 2.5 million to 1 chance that candidates will get the same multiple choice or multiple response questions. This will launch in January, together with The Blue Book – heralding a new chapter in the quest for competence. For more information on ADSA visit: www.adsa.org.uk or call: 01827 216136

ENERGY EFFICIENT WOODEN WINDOWS AND DOORS Consumers are increasingly looking to upgrade their home to be more energy efficient. For period properties this is especially a problem, with many having draughty, single glazed windows. However, providing planning permissions allow it, there is no reason why period properties cannot benefit from double glazed windows and doors while also retaining their traditional style. The Sash Window Workshop were contacted to help upgrade 17 windows and some French doors at a neo-Georgian property in a Conservation Area in West London. The new joinery needed to be double glazed but otherwise a replica of the original windows and door. Most of the window frames were in a good condition, so a quotation was provided for a mixture of new sashes into the existing frames and, for items where the frame had deteriorated, complete replacement. The customer decided to proceed with the work and a survey was arranged to confirm the measurements before the windows and door were manufactured and installed. After the work was completed, they commented: “The new windows and doors are exactly what we had hoped for, and we are very pleased with the installation.” www.sashwindow.com

A WINDOW ON UNIQUE GARAGE DOOR DESIGNS

O

ne of the biggest advantages of choosing a bespoke garage door is being able to incorporate windows of many different types. Unlike standard garage doors, which will usually only be available with relatively small windows, a made to order garage door from Rundum Meir can offer something completely different with much more creative potential. Whether it is a ‘mediaeval’ style to suit a historic building, reflecting Georgian grandeur or to achieve an ultra-contemporary look, there are numerous ways the garage door can be designed to feature windows. Choosing a garage door with larger windows is an excellent way to give an existing garage new purpose or enable new garages to be created with the flexibility to use the space as an annexe.

46

The garage’s purpose does not have to be limited to simply being a place to park the car! Specifying a garage door with windows will allow plenty of natural light to be introduced into the garage. This is important where the aim is to create a comfortable internal environment for uses such as a home office, a workshop or indoor play area, a games room or a gym, with the added benefit of natural light’s ability to enhance productivity and even our mood. For classic car collectors, or those who have a collection they want to be able to see from outdoors on their terms, having larger windows is a must. A large garage can become a private showroom by specifying garage doors with full height windows. Shading and privacy as and when it is required could even be incorporated by specifying motorised integral blinds or switchable smart glass into the double glazed windows. The flexibility to incorporate windows in many different shapes and sizes comes with choosing a bespoke garage door from Rundum Meir. Every garage door Rundum Meir manufactures is designed and made to order which means customers can specify the materials and finishes, along with features such as louvres and – of course – windows.

047 ATB

Rundum Meir offers three types of garage door that can be designed to feature windows: side sectional doors, overhead sectional doors and one piece ‘up and over’ doors. Side sectional doors offer incredible potential for window integration. The panels that make up a side sectional door are usually made from timber or aluminium, but these can actually be full height windows to deliver a garage door that looks similar to a bi-fold door. Overhead sectional doors or one-piece up and over garage doors can also feature windows in many positions, including arranged down one side or in the centre of the door. Coach house style doors can feature windows in the top half of the door with a height that suits aesthetic goals. These – as well as any other types of windows – can incorporate obscure glass to allow light transmission without being able to see in. THE VIEWPOINT

HOW CAN EARLY ENGAGEMENT DELIVER MORE SUSTAINABLE BUILDING ENVELOPES? Hitesh Pattni, Northern Specification Manager at SFS, discusses how engaging product manufacturers in technical design advice during early work stages means project-specific solutions can be aligned with sustainable outcomes.

How the construction industry can help the environment - Seeking technical design advice from product manufacturers during early work stages means project-specific solutions can be developed; and be aligned with the desired sustainable construction outcomes. It's then possible to demonstrate to clients the value that a particular solution will provide; through long-term performance and lower whole-life energy and carbon emissions, for example. The nature of the design advice can vary by project. It is likely to feature U-value calculations for the building envelope, giving a more accurate idea of wall thickness. It might also feature Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) which can be used to help calculate a project's overall environmental impact. What is the key to limiting the environmental impact of construction? - Nowhere is the environmental impact of human activity more evident than in the construction industry and what the construction sector contributes. In the UK alone, the sector uses around 400 million tonnes of materials every year. Around a quarter of that becomes waste, despite dwindling supplies of finite raw materials. And yet, as global populations continue to grow and become more urbanised, the worldwide demand for raw materials will increase. How do we reconcile our ongoing need for buildings with the environmental impact that construction activity has on the planet? Robust building envelope specifications are required - which not only aim to meet the needs of 'now' but also help to ensure the building makes a constructive contribution to the planet for a positive future.

052 ATB

52

Efficiency is essential. That does not just mean the thermal efficiency of the building envelope. The concept of efficiency can be applied at any and all stages of a project. It starts from the outset by asking whether new construction is necessary, or can a client's needs be met using an existing asset? If a new building is required, how can it be designed to use resources efficiently and to reduce, or even eliminate, waste? How can it be delivered efficiently on site? Why is it important to consider the whole life of products and buildings? - Being clear about what 'sustainable' means in the building industry or on a construction project is easier said than done. There are many contrasting opinions and conflicting sources of advice. It is challenging to specify products that lower the operational emissions of a building, even before thinking about raw material sourcing’s, in-use maintenance and repair, and what will happen to the building at the end of its life. Manufacturers are keen to promote the sustainability benefits of their products but a robust specification is one that uses materials because they support the long-term goals of the project, and not just because they claim to be 'low carbon' or contain a lot of recycled content. Awareness around embodied carbon is increasing within the construction industry and it is likely to become legislated in the near future. Reductions in embodied carbon can mean a project is using resources more efficiently simply by using less of them. In the context of the linear economy, however, where materials and products are still routinely disposed of at the end of their life, is embodied carbon the right long-term metric? By looking at materials and products in terms of their whole life impact, we can start to shift the construction industry towards a circular economy approach. The availability of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) supports this. When manufacturers can supply EPDs that report on all lifecycle impacts, specifiers are better placed to make all-embracing informed decisions. Metals such as steel and aluminium have high embodied carbon, but we can think about how to design with them in a way that takes advantage of their strength and durability. Designing components for reuse means that when a building reaches the end of its useful life, it can be disassembled, and the components used on a new site. Demand for raw materials and new products is reduced. And even though these metals are infinitely recyclable, the environmental impact associated with the recycling process is avoided too.

053 ATB

How to start thinking of sustainability as more than carbon dioxide emissions Switching to a longer-term frame of reference means having information available to understand products in a different way. That is a key area in which specifiers and manufacturers can work together, and the collaborations most effective when it happens in the early stages of a project. It becomes possible to know more about where raw materials are sourced from and how far they have travelled to be made into a construction product, and then delivered to site. It means understanding how components perform in use, how they contribute to the overall performance of the building. It means knowing how a product can be handled at the end of the building's life. Current building regulations do not include requirements for these aspects of building design and specification. The focus remains on the operational efficiency of buildings. Important as that is, there is a lot more to sustainability. The transition away from fossil fuels means designing buildings with high levels of building fabric performance and efficiency specified renewable technology. Engaging with manufacturers means specifiers can work to design a building envelope that is capable of incorporating those renewable as part of the system, thereby achieving long-term sustainability. https://uk.sfs.com

POWERING UP MORE SUSTAINABLE, HEALTHIER OUTDOOR PUBLIC SPACES Many of the UK’s town and city centres are being redefined to ensure they fit more closely with today’s urban lifestyles and the expectations of tourists. The changing retail landscape, driven by the growth of online shopping, more people working from home and an increasing number of people choosing to live in city centres, means that previous models for the design of streetscapes, public parks, plazas and other pedestrianised spaces are needing to undergo significant change. But it is not just reaction to social change that is at the heart of redesigns – sustainability and a growing movement to capitalise on the health benefits of being outdoors, in whatever form that takes, are also part of this fresh thinking to redesign our public spaces. There is extensive evidence to show that providing safe, secure and attractive outdoor spaces is important to help people be more active and maintain and extend social interaction to benefit their mental health. Flood prevention and ensuring that water is managed efficiently in urban areas is becoming increasingly important due to climate change. Hence, SuDS (sustainable urban drainage systems) are being integrated and there is an increased use of planters in spaces that were previously dominated by tarmac, pavers and concrete, encouraging biodiversity in the process.

54

But there is also another important consideration in making these new outdoor public spaces as popular and versatile as possible to maximise their potential – access to on-demand power sockets. Events can play a big role in increasing the use of outdoor spaces and attracting local people as well as tourists. Food and drink fairs, children’s fun days, market stalls, music gigs and light shows – events such as these can be a major draw and help strengthen local communities and they are easier to stage (even at relatively short notice) when easy access to power sockets is provided. This is why a power infrastructure is a must for any redevelopment scheme or new development, and Pop Up Power Supplies® can help through a range of pop-up, in-ground and bollard power units. By incorporating a power access where there is an opportunity for events at all times of the year, there is no need to hire generators, which can be expensive and may not fit with the local sustainability agenda. The pop up (retractable) and in-ground power distribution units are permanently submerged in the ground, discreetly installed with a lid that matches surrounding surfaces so they are barely noticeable when not it use.

055 ATB

When a power connection is needed, such as to provide electricity to a street food kiosk, the lid can be unlocked by an authorised user to allow power leads to connected. The pop up unit is raised up using a turning handle, whereas the in-ground unit stays below the surface, accessed via a flip lid. As soon as vendors finish serving, or when events are over, the power leads can be simply disconnected and the power unit can be securely locked again to prevent unauthorised access and vandalism. The third option from Pop Up Power Supplies® is the power bollard. This elegantly designed bollard will integrate with other street furniture as part of an attractive streetscape, whilst providing the benefit of access to electricity when required through its sockets behind a locked cover. www.popuppower.co.uk

THE EPD EXPLAINED

056 ATB

By Wojciech Brozyna, Managing Director Aluprof UK Limited

The EPD, a declaration made by a supplier that sits on a level playing field so specifiers can make decisions based on the life cycle of similar products and their impact on our planet, is particularly related to carbon emissions. Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are produced based on EN 15804+A2 and then verified in accordance with ISO 14025 by an independent external auditor. Produced in a common format, the declarations are easier to compare across different suppliers. An EPD is valid for a five year period and is recognised across the globe. The EPD is produced from a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) which looks at a product life cycle through five stages which are: production, construction, the use stage, end-of-life and the potential for reuse, recovery or recycling. These are defined as Product Category Rules (PCRs) are specific to each product category and are always based on the ISO 14025 standard for Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). By enabling these standard PCRs products and materials can be compared side by side. The five stages of PCRs are referred to by letter and further broken down into sub-factors, which are: The production & construction stages (A1-A5) show the impacts of the raw material supply, transport to the production facilities, the manufacturing stage, the impacts of transport to the site and product installation. The use stage (B1-B7) covers the environmental impact for the period that the product is in use.

56

This includes any likely emissions in use, product maintenance, expected repair or scheduled replacement and any operational energy use and water use such as in cleaning. The end-of-life stage (C1-C4) considers the impact of de-construction, transport to waste processing including any recovery or disposal processes. Material reuse, recovery or recycling stage (D), sometimes referred to as ‘Module D’ offers data on the ability of the material to have a second life. Some second lives can be as a lower quality material or indeed in the case of metals, can be recycled back into the same quality material, in the case of aluminium, recycled almost indefinitely. The availability of this data in the form of an EPD has a two-fold impact, it further focuses suppliers to continue to reduce carbon emissions as the data becomes ‘public’ about their products and, as previously stated, allows specifiers to make choices about similar manufacturers products and products made from alternative materials.

On producing an EPD the LCA of a product (or service) is reviewed by the independent assessor and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) figure is produced and entered into the declaration. It may seem obvious, given the GWP figure, the best option is just to select a product/material with the lowest result which is best for the planet. Not necessarily, as a change in material may affect both the design and impact of other materials in the construction. GWPs that are reviewed across similar materials and products from various providers would be the best approach. In the case of facades, it is important to review the whole-building level impacts. A comparison from suppliers can made be by completing a ‘Building LCA’ which will provide the building’s life-cycle impacts cradle to grave.

057 ATB

By comparing the products’ environmental impact for the lifetime of the building into which facades are to be installed and the conditions that the building requires, will offer the best outputs to help make an informed decision. Whilst EPDs are valid for five years, Aluprof are continuously reviewing their LCAs and where necessary review and update their EPDs which are freely available on the company's website.

To define how the product data is collected for a specific type of product, key components of the EPD and LCA, is yet another three-letter acronym: the Product Category Rules (PCRs). These rules define how the data is collected for a specific type of product. When these parameters are followed, independent reviewers can achieve consistent results, which allows specifiers to compare different products. PCRs are developed and administered by a program operator, generally standards organisations across the globe. PCRs are required for the completion of Type III EPDs as defined by ISO 14025.

Project managers are available to explain the contents of the company's EPDs and complete specification support is available direct from Aluprof UK Installation in the UK and Ireland is undertaken by national facade companies with fully trained installers. detailed veining requires an allnew technique of design. The intricate, interlocking veins are made possible by the brand’s new moulding system, giving life to particles and minerals of a wide range of sizes and creating an incredible new texture.

Cosentino’s patented HybriQ+® technology is involved in the process as Silestone® Le Chic is manufactured using 99% reused water and 100% renewable energy, incorporating a minimum of 20% recycled raw materials in its composition, that also has less than 40% of silica. Le Chic collection is composed of six designs: Parisian Blue, Eclectic Pearl, Versailles Ivory, Victorian Silver, Bohemian Flame and Romantic Ash. Parisian Blue – Taking inspiration from the French Capital. This colourway boasts a deep bluish tone with strong personality and powerful character. Inspired by the shades seen in famous Imperial Roman stones, combined with fine veins in ochre tones. Eclectic Pearl - One of the best examples of the core design idea behind Le Chic. Classic and modern, it features flowing streams of delicate tones incrusted with grains like diamonds on jewelry. Eclectic Pearl hypnotises with delicate veining, texture, and metallic accents across the whole surface. Versailles Ivory - The warmest tone of the collection.Very subtle two-toned marbling in the background with gradient effects mesmerise with the flickering lights of its golden sparkle. Versailles Ivory exudes luxury and elegance, reminiscent of the exuberance of the Palace of Versailles.

It features a new production process demonstrating the company’s commitment to the environment, the circular economy and sustainable management. With HybriQ+®, in addition to Cosentino’s environmental milestones, such as the use of 99% recycled water and 100% renewable electric energy, at least 20% of recycled raw materials are used in the manufacture of Silestone®. Furthermore, HybriQ+® technology stands out for its new formulation in the composition of Silestone®, where the presence of crystalline silica is significantly reduced. Urban Crush series has less than 40% crystalline silica in its composition. www.cosentino.com/en-gb/silestone

Victorian Silver - Soft and subtle two-toned marbling in the background, with gradient effects and depth. The cool background tone blends with its silver and dark grey veins to create an elegant colour that fits seamlessly with warm and cold tones. Bohemian Flame - This color presents subtle sinuous veins with metallic inlays in copper shades. The movement of the golden flows of lava that generate scars on volcanic soil inspires it. It’s reminiscent of the calmly moving golden flame of candles accentuating tiny metallic pieces. Romantic Ash - Another example of Le Chic's visual excellence. Large rivers and incrustations of grains in various sizes awaken memories of a milky way visible on a clear starry sky. The accent of blue strengthens the depth of Romantic Ash. Silestone® & HybriQ+® Le Chic uses HybriQ+®, the exclusive and pioneering technology developed for Silestone® by Cosentino. HybriQ+®, launched in 2020, is a qualitative leap in the evolution of the Silestone® brand.

INSPIRATIONAL NORDIC COPPER

064 ATB

Photo: Jim Stephenson

N

ordic Copper offers an extensive range of natural surfaces and alloys that can be applied in numerous ways for cladding and roofing on a wide variety of building types – from major public buildings to distinctive individual homes. A growing series of building studies (via www. nordiccopper.com) showcase the diversity of surfaces, forms and applications available today. Copper’s unique architectural qualities are defined by its naturally developing patina – which cannot be replicated successfully using other materials with surface coatings.

64

The patina film provides impressive protection against corrosion and can repair itself if damaged, giving its exceptional longevity. Within a few days of exposure to the atmosphere, a copper surface begins to oxidise, changing from the ‘bright’ mill finish to a chestnut brown, which gradually darkens over several years to a chocolate brown. Continued weathering can eventually result in the distinctive green or blue patina seen on older roofs. (cont...)

(cont...) Natural Living Surfaces - The Aurubis ‘Nordic Copper’ range provides all these surfaces straightaway. The processes involved are generally similar to those taking place over time in the environment, utilising copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical processes. All these surfaces form an integral part of the copper, generally continuing to change over time, and are not lifeless coatings or paint. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets. The Nordic Copper range includes Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown preoxidised copper, offering lighter or darker shades of brown determined by the thickness of the oxide layer. Apart from traditionally-jointed, rolled material supported by a substrate, various other forms of copper for architecture are increasingly being explored by designers. For example, copper can be supplied in profiled sheets or extremely flat honeycomb panels, pressed to provide surface textures and modulation, or perforated, expanded or woven as mesh for transparency.

66

Whole-life Cost & Carbon Benefits - The lifespan of copper roofing and cladding can be regarded conservatively as 200 years, subject to substrate and structure, and this is endorsed by experience. Naturally, this longevity has a significant beneficial effect upon comparative whole of life cost and carbon assessments. Copper’s longevity is due to a complex patination process. It ensures extreme durability with no maintenance and resistance to corrosion in virtually any atmospheric conditions. And, unlike some other architectural metals, copper does not suffer from underside corrosion. In addition, copper requires no maintenance or decoration. As a lightweight and flexible covering, structural support demands are reduced, resulting in lower carbon and ‘whole of life’ costs. Copper is also fully recyclable utilising long-established practices – 97% of copper in construction comes from recycling – and has other impressive sustainability and environmental credentials. And, of course, copper retains a high scrap value at eventual demolition. Fire-safe Cladding - With an ‘A1 (non-combustible material)’ fire classification to EN 13501-1, Nordic Copper is suitable for cladding tall buildings, using appropriate constructions. Low thermal movement makes it appropriate for any climates and locations, and it is non- toxic and safe to handle, as well as non-brittle and safe to work.

067 ATB

And, importantly today, its inherent antimicrobial qualities make it ideal for touch surfaces internally as well. An expanding series of building studies showcases the diversity of surfaces, forms and applications available with Nordic Copper today. CLASS 1 MAGPLY BOARDS WITHSTAND REAL LIFE FIRE TEST ON SURREY HOME A potentially catastrophic blaze, which consumed the garage containing a parked vehicle adjoining a £1M house in rural Surrey, was stopped in its tracks thanks to the use of 12mm A1 non combustible Magply being chosen as the render substrate board on the contract , the property was constructed using a Structurally Insulated Panel system construction (SIP) with A1 non-combustible Magply being used on the exterior of the building as the substrate panel for the proprietary render system. Magply is a multi-use A1 non-combustible board with an impressive library of testing for fire applications. The board is designed and specified to contain fire and support the emergency services with added crucial time! Although the emergency services were quick to attend the fire, which happened in August, it had taken sufficient hold that the large timber framed garage was totally destroyed with just some sections of the frame still standing. However, the gable end to the house which features a relatively thin, weatherproof finish of the silica-based K-Rend suffered only surface damage. Remarkably, although areas of the render had spalled off, the 12mm Magply boards underneath had not even charred while they had fully protected the SIPs structure beneath. www.magply.co.uk 69

DURAL'S FLOORSHOW AT ADAM SMITH THEATRE

070 ATB

T

he Adam Smith Theatre is currently closed for a major refurbishment and Dural are delighted to be part of the project. The redevelopment of the Adam Smith theatre has been a major capital investment by Fife Council who have worked in conjunction with architect Gavin Turner. When the theatre reopens this year it will provide the town and community with a much needed hub to work, rest and play! The first phase was to redevelop the auditorium with new seating and carpet. Phase two encompassed both design and architectural vision. Each space needed to be both practical and functional. There is a busy foyer and box office area which will have to endure a high footfall. A bar area, lower function suite and studio space. There are areas in this project where ceramic tile flooring has been specified. In these areas the architect has uncovered a variety of floor substrates which meet at differing levels within the new spaces. Dural has been integral in offering technical advice on how to install their Durabase CI++ matting which has been specified by the main contractor on this project.

70

This product is a multifunctional matting system, it has a 3 layer construction which offers many more advantages than just decoupling. It has crack-bridging properties and optimised shearing force protection. The theatre is under a preservation order as its construction dates back to 1899. It was originally created as a memorial to the great economist and philosopher Adam Smith. Interestingly the building was funded by linoleum manufacturer Michael Beveridge! Durabase CI++ matting allows new tiles to be laid successfully on old and damaged floors. In this instance the matting was placed over both concrete and timber substrates. The matting is quick and straightforward to install but offers maximum reliability. Ideal for renovation projects! The theatre entrance and bar were also all tiled, Dural were asked to supply Coloured Movement Joints for this expanse.

071 ATB

The beautiful tiled floor was both a practical and aesthetic choice. When considering such a large expanse of tile it is important to use both Movement Joints and Perimeter Joints. Hard flooring expands and contracts, a Movement Joint prevents the tiles and grout from cracking. Movement Joint profiles can cope with heavy stresses and distribute them evenly between the foundation and floor covering.

Movement Joints are designed and manufactured to exceed the requirements of BS 5385 and can be used with Slate, Natural Stone and Ceramic tiled floors. Dural also provides highly competent advice and support for any tiling project. No matter how complex the application they can provide the perfect solution, including both products and service. www.colouredmovementjoints.co.uk

They protect hard floor coverings from the stresses that cause cracking and tenting. On suspended floors stress-relieving joints should be placed over supporting walls and beams, anywhere there can be a risk of flexing. For a breathtaking finish, coloured movement joints were specified. The floor needed to blend seamlessly in order to give the project a high end finish necessary for such a beautiful building. Coloured Movement Joints are available in any RAL colour and for this project Dural matched them to the tile colour. They are often used in public spaces because of their durability. Their ability to handle a wide range of loadings and constant footfall is useful. All CMJ - Coloured

the local lady's college in 1933. The current owners, Nigel and Maureen Weir, purchased the property in 2013 before recruiting local design practice, Robert Allerton Architects, to realise their ambitious plans for reconfiguring the layout and upgrading the exterior fabric. With SEH French appointed as the main contractor, all of the ageing render was removed from the solid brickwork walls and new openings created to bring more daylight into the reconfigured interiors, while a major new extension was raised using fully insulated cavity construction.

Although the latter features an imposing balcony fronted by Haddonstone dry cast balustrading, the manufacturer's glass fibre reinforced cement TecLite mouldings were specified to enrich the older elevations without imposing significant additional loadings. Rob Allerton, the founding partner at Robert Allerton Architects, explains: "The house had gone from being dormitories for a lady's college to a private house before my clients bought it. In addition to layout changes and new windows, we undertook some ‘light touch' alterations to respect the historic aspects to the property. It is best known for having once been occupied by Sir John Spence Login, guardian of Dulep Singh, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, and thereby guardian of the Koh-I-Noor diamond that now forms part of the Crown Jewels." "Above the window heads, we used Haddonstone's TecLite mouldings in order to minimise the load and because we could not build back into the structure. Then, around the extension, the balcony was created by a ring beam on the

cavity wall with a slab and the dry cast balustrade. The landscaping work also used a large quantity of copings and pier caps for patio walls. We have used Haddonstone for a variety of projects in the past for our residential and other clients and, in the case of Ridley House, the company offered us all the technical answers to the challenges we faced."

WRAPTITE ® AIRTIGHTNESS FOR NEW SELF-BUILD HOUSE A new self-build house in County Monaghan, Ireland, has been built incorporating the high-performing Wraptite air-barrier from the A. Proctor Group. The project, designed by McGuigan Architects, Monaghan, consists of a 250m2 detached private residence. The house design is a load-bearing Lightweight Steel Frame Construction. The steel frame system’s exterior finish is formed of a 12mm Y-Wall Sheathing Board, the Wraptite Airtight Breather Membrane, and a 150mm Sto EPS Insulated Render System. The U-Value and condensation risk calculations carried out by the A. Proctor Group on the proposed through wall build-up confirmed no risk of condensation. Because the house is a self-build project and the external finish was not critical to the overall programme, the membrane provided both a damage resistant air barrier layer and effective secondary weather protection in one installation process, to allow internal trades to proceed earlier. In addition, the self-adhesive application of Wraptite enables it to be left exposed for up to 120 days during construction. The Wraptite system is the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the BBA. It combines the critical properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one self-adhering membrane. The high vapour permeability of the Wraptite air barrier allows the substrate beneath to dry quickly and moisture vapour to escape and reduces the likelihood of mould, mildew, condensation, timber distortion and metal corrosion. www.proctorgroup.com

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY GREEN ROOF RETROFIT

B

oughton’s Intensive green roof substrate has been successfully trialled in a ground-breaking analysis project at Coventry University assessing the feasibility of ‘greening’ landscapes with ecologically beneficial habitats. With the objective being to research the benefits and plausibility of incorporating green space and wildlife-friendly habitats into heavily built-up areas, Coventry University handpicked Boughton’s Intensive IN1 substrate based on its nutrient content, weight, and the inclusion of a water supply in chambers beneath the sub-base. The majority of green roofs in the UK fall into the ‘extensive’ category and are based on a low growing succulent, Sedum, which only requires a few centimetres of substrate to grow, whilst intensive green roofs provide a deeper soil depth and can support a more complex plant system. To this end, Coventry University wanted to explore the advantages of intensive green roofs, which offer greater biodiversity, often create accessible spaces, and offer the best insulation properties and storm water management. The organisation partnered with SEL Environmental, which provided its intelligent water management systems for the project.

076 ATB

Boughton’s Intensive IN1 substrate boasts greater organic content than extensive substrates, meaning it supports larger plants and can be installed at greater depths, varying from 100-500cm.

76

IN1 provides a stable growing medium for a wide variety of plants in intensive green roof installations, including green roof lawns, shrubs and trees. Depending on the substrate depth and plant type, permanent irrigation systems (above or below ground) are sometimes installed with this substrate as a backup for extended dry periods. They are not required for everyday irrigation, as the substrate has the ability to hold onto sufficient moisture during ambient conditions. The project, funded by Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) and headed up by Sophie Barron-West, followed plant growth for four years from 2017, with a break due to Covid-19.

UK are based on sedum, and, whist there are additional features that can be added to these green roofs to improve biodiversity, they are rarely incorporated. Our findings, using Boughton’s Intensive green roof substrate, are that the retrofit of green roofs is feasible and, more than four years into development, IN1 has supported verifiably diverse green roofs. The plants on these roofs supported several insects that have rarity status in the UK, which is very positive.”

Dr Stephen Coupe and Dr Liz Trenchard from the University’s Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR) offered their research expertise. CAWR’s Dr Stephen Coupe says: “The technical requirements of Boughton IN1 were a big part of why we chose it. We also wanted the chance to get as many wildflowers in the space as possible. The nutrient levels were perfect because it wasn’t too rich. In fact, it was a ‘just right’ formulation that wasn’t going to overstimulate but would also deliver enough nutrients for what we needed. Ultimately it was going to be perfect for long-term sustainable plant growth.” He continues: “Reliability was another consideration because we knew we could get it delivered on site on time and, because of Boughton’s location in Kettering, we weren’t concerned about lead times, so that was a plus. It’s safe to say it was a studied choice.” Ground-breaking results - According to the University, the trial resulted in ground-breaking analysis of how different types of green roofs can be created and maintained, as well as what their benefits would be alongside others in a built-up area. The project successfully demonstrated the ecological impact of placing retrofit green roofs onto existing infrastructure, even with a focus on wildflower species and a relatively short development time. An independently-conducted ecological survey recorded five insect species that have a national and local rarity value, including two species of bee that are deemed ‘nationally scarce’ and ‘nationally rare’. Of 457 preserved specimens taken on the green roofs at Coventry University, a total of 120 different insect species were recorded, including wasps, sawflies, hoverflies, beetles, and as many as 11 bee species. Coventry University’s findings revealed that the innovation in green roofs has improved and increased the total constructed habitat for rare insects. Research has also enabled better water management alongside habitat enhancement. This research has been incorporated into SEL’s product range, where green roofs are now used across four sites in Coventry, London, Aylesford and Blackburn. CAWR’s Dr Stephen Coupe said: “Ecology, biodiversity and wildlife are largely forgotten by planners, designers and builders in developments. Most green roofs installed in the

077 ATB Dr Coupe adds: “Whilst it is probable that substrates take many years to develop anything like the maturity comparable to natural soil, after just four years, IN1 went from having no recordable eukaryotes, to a concentration of organisms, including worms, soil mites and rotifers.” The experiment at Coventry University is ongoing and the team is set to feed back again at the end of the summer about how prolonged dry weather has affected results. Dr Coupe says: “The beauty of this project is that there is no general timeline for a piece of green space. We need funding to support our ongoing investigations but there are options and opportunities for long-term research. It can last for the lifespan of the site and I think we will see really interesting developments. There is no reason why, over time, these green spaces would be indistinguishable from an existing habitat.” Boughton’s green roof substrates are specifically engineered for different types of roof greening, both for domestic and commercial projects. A full product specification is available for each of Boughton’s Green Roof Substrates and other landscaping products, including its single-source natural topsoils, making exact specification simple and straightforward. www.boughton.co.uk

CUPA 12 PROVIDES STRIKING SOLUTION FOR A CONTEMPORARY FAMILY HOME IN A CONSERVATION AREA

C

UPA PIZARRAS’ CUPA 12 natural slate has been specified for the roof of a new family home, built in the garden of a historic Grade II listed Arts and Crafts property in North London. The use of CUPA PIZARRAS products helped to satisfy stringent planning restrictions, which require new buildings to utilise traditional materials and ensure modern designs are in keeping with the surrounding architecture. The design team, from Levitate architecture and design studio, needed a way to respectfully reference the traditional architecture of the area without compromising the contemporary finish of the property. CUPA 12 slate provided the perfect balance: being a natural and historically appropriate material that

could also provide a clean aesthetic with a smooth, uniform finish. This – combined with the steep pitch of the roof, overhanging eaves and series of intersecting gables – helped to make the roof of the property a defining feature. This is consistent with traditional Arts and Crafts design – and gave a suitable nod to the Grade II property the new family home would be neighbouring. In addition to satisfying the visual requirements of the project, CUPA 12 slate is also a BRE Global Certified product that provides a more sustainable solution than other contemporary roofing materials.

079 ATB

CUPA PIZARRAS’ direct control over every stage of the slate production process - from quarry to roof - means that it can guarantee the quality of its product and trace it back to the source. This was beneficial in promoting a sustainable approach to the construction of a new property within a conservation area as well as helping to guarantee the timely delivery of the natural slate. Levitate has extensive experience working in conservation areas and on properties of historical significance. Architect Toby Knipping commented: “Site context was key to this project. We used a traditional palette of brick, wood and slate to reference the historic buildings in the surrounding area yet with a modern twist. We were very happy with the results and would definitely consider using CUPA PIZARRAS slate on other projects.” Infill developments of this kind had previously been discouraged by the local planning authority, with several neighbours having new build projects rejected. Mark Hagan, Director of the project’s management firm Heartwood Ash, said: “Sourcing products of a high enough quality to satisfy the planning conditions was one of the primary challenges of this project. Being able to present the planning officers with physical samples provided by the CUPA PIZARRAS team really helped us to gain their confidence in both the product’s ability to satisfy requirements and also the project itself.” www.cupapizarras.com/uk

SCHÖCK THERMAL BREAKS AND NEW DOWELS FOR MAJOR SWANSEA OFFICE DEVELOPMENT

A

major new high-tech office development in Swansea city centre is fast taking shape. The five-storey building, known as 71/72 Kingsway, is a carbon-zero development with two underground levels. It is part of a major transformation of the area and will provide 114,000 square feet of flexible co-working and networking office opportunities for 600 jobs in the innovative tech, digital and creative sector businesses. The offices will feature state-of-the-art digital connectivity and integration with smart city technology, conference and meeting facilities.

080 ATB

Balconies, a green rooftop terrace and atriums are also incorporated. The building detail required thermal insulation of the highest standard, along with high-performance expansion joints. With its comprehensive range of structural thermal breaks and the new Stacon dowel product, Schöck was ideally placed to meet the necessary requirements. There were technical challenges though - The main issue was the retaining wall in the basement and ground floor area, which put axial pressure onto the structural Isokorb thermal break elements. As a result, it was necessary to calculate both the compression from this force and the moment resistance based on the residual capacity of the in-situ thermal breaks. At the second and third floors, the placement of the column grid was unconventional and converse to the usual external-to-internal arrangement. So the elements were in effect installed in the opposite direction to what would normally be anticipated.

80

To combat any effects of thermal bridging throughout the RC construction, namely heat loss, damp and mould formation, a variety of Isokorb thermal break types were incorporated. Those most extensively used though are the T type K and the XT type K. Both are load-bearing thermal break elements for concrete cantilevered balcony construction, transferring moments and shear forces. They have 80mm and 120mm insulation thickness respectively. New Stacon dowels used for the first time - There were a number of large beam forces to transfer on the upper levels and the newly launched Schöck Stacon dowels were used for the first time in the UK. This new dowel, the type SLD, is really compact and as the anchoring bodies have been reduced in size, it has the advantage of enabling higher loads to be installed in thinner slabs and walls, optimising on-site reinforcement.

081 ATB

Stacon has been awarded UK Technical Assessment (UKTA) along with fire protection classification R 120. It is fully supported with Scalix design software too, the first webbased application for the design of shear dowels. A dependable and fully compliant product range - The Schöck Isokorb range of structural thermal break solutions is the largest in Europe and in the UK helps projects meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations. In addition to the Isokorb type used on this project, there are also solutions for concrete-to-steel; steel-tosteel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. lasgow’s latest redevelopment project, located on Langside Road, is built upon the former site of the city’s Victoria Infirmary and consists of a large housing development that includes 413 flats, offices and retail space. The 3.75 hectare site, which is situated next to Queen’s Park on the south side of the city, forms an important part of the Battlefield area’s character, with the buildings’ exterior reflecting and complementing the surrounding heritage by using the city's traditional blonde coloured sandstone. As part of the construction process, Bilco UK was commissioned to supply six ESW-50REM Smoke Vents, in addition to seven E-50TB Roof Access Hatches, to provide the highest standards of safety and efficiency, whilst being sympathetic to the project’s overall design. Installed onto the roof areas of four blocks of flats by Scottish contractors, Procladd Small Works Ltd, Bilco UK’s ESW-50REM

Smoke Vents were specified to provide essential ventilation in the event of a building fire. Featuring a linear actuator operating mechanism that opens the cover to 140 degrees within 60 seconds, the smoke vents ensure compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document B, BS9999 and EN12101-2. The built-in wind deflector also provides protection against smoke being blown back into the vent in the event of a fire., whilst the newly-designed closedcell EPDM sponge gasket helps meet Building Regulation air leakage targets by providing a better seal of the cover to the curb. With the addition of a fixed vertical ladder, the smoke vents can also be used by maintenance engineers for roof access.

Billy Baillie, Managing Director at Procladd Small Works Ltd, said: “We have a longstanding relationship of over 20 years with Bilco UK, and will continue to do so over the forthcoming years, due to their impressive product quality and outstanding service. Bilco UK’s Roof Access Hatches and Smoke Vents were incredibly easy to install, and knowing they’re engineered to meet the highest industry standards, it provided both ourselves and the client with the confidence that the installation would set the standard for performance and longevity.” Constructed with corrosion-resistant materials, Bilco UK’s E-50TB Roof Access Hatches were also installed to provide engineers with safe, regular and convenient access to the roof to conduct essential maintenance. Engineered with compression spring operators to provide easy one-hand operation, the roof access hatch meets the requirements of Manual Handling Regulations, whilst the automatic hold-open arm locks the cover in the open position to ensure safe egress. The overlapping cover design, fully welded corners and insulated cover also ensure weathertightness and energy efficiency to deliver the highest standards of resilience. Mark Baird, Sales Operations Manager at Bilco UK, said: “Drawing on our longstanding relationship with Procladd Small Works Ltd, it was fantastic to work together on this project, which has been designed to positively impact the city’s culture. The products installed were manufactured with fire safety and efficiency in mind, delivering assurance of the durability and suitability of the installation for years to come.” www.bilcouk.co.uk
