Transport • Public transport directly link the site with the world tourist destination- Edinburgh city centre. • The new ferry landing connects the site with the world over the sea.
Recreation • The first urban context waterfront tourist destination in Edinburgh. • Along the coast, Granton functions its unique recreation value as a transition from rural to urban.
Relation with local communities • It is a continue of southern communities • With plenty of community activities and facilities, the site will be a new destination for not only worldwide tourists, but also local residents.

Transfer the shore works back to hinterland. Introduce the museum to seaside can give the museum a unique character, while the seafront will have a new attraction. In this way, it’s a win-win proposal.
open green space
enclosed green space
storage
The unpleasant industrial views should be blocked; The green and open landscape can improve the quality of the business zones; Views from the terraced houses should be protected.
These three new accesses are the gate of the sub site, so they need to be open and welcoming.
Survey shows that the Scottish National Museum has a plan to open a new museum based on the collections in granton storage.

PROGRAMMES RESEARCH AND PROPOSALS COASTAL PIER FISHING
The eastern breakwater in Granton has already been a fishing destination for local people. They have a fishing club to organize the activities during fishing season. According to facebook interviews, there is large space for the fishing pier to be improved, such as better hubs, lighting system, first aid equipments, etc.
CONSERVATION WITH VIEWS
There are self-growing salt water meadows along the coast which need to be preserved and to raise the public’s awareness. To protect the valuable meadows, the marsh is seperated by a new “fishing pier”, and kept no access. But to maximum using the scenery, a platform will be enlarged from the existing walk as a resting place.
COASTAL MUSEUM PROPOSAL
COASTAL OPEN AIR THEATRE
SPATIAL SEQUENCE FOR THE THEATRE
GRANTON FERRY LANDING
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen, Denmark
Ferry tour is proposed from Granton to Queens ferry and Inchcolm. It opens up the waterway of the site, and connect the proposed programmes with the existing sea attractions such as islands, firth of forth bridge, etc.
Set the stage into nature could bring fresh experience to both audience and performers. In Granton harbour, the great sea view as a background for the stage will be vast, simple, but never humdrum. The coming and going boats could always refresh the screen.
ECONOMY UPON NEW COAST
The current business on site are mainly storage and warehouse-like retails. There are some stores selling water sports equipments. In this project, the development of the business and commercial zones can be planned as two phases. In phase one, the shops for sport equipments should be promoted. At the same time, cafes and restaurants for sport clubs can be encouraged to establish. As the recreational programmes develops, in phase two, the commercials will take over the business and light industry. As the activities will bring more people, lots of shops and bars will appear on the site and stimulate local economy.
ART WORK PROPOSAL
“Another place”, Liverpool, Antony Gormley
COASTAL ARTS The open and simple sea creates a pure background for artworks to display, especially for those contemporary arts that use a sequence to tell the story.
SCOTTISH LOCAL ARTISTS Art works by scottish artists As being the Scotland’s capital and a city of art, Edinburgh has gathered many talented local artists. Such as Martin Boyce who won the 2011 turner prize, famous colour dealer Jim Lambie, and the very Scottish light Billy Kay who did outstanding work in Fife. Cooperation with them for Granton art work will bring a fresh breeze to the old harbour, and help Granton to set up a new landmark.

Setting the masterpieces with nature, sometimes the natural views will become part of the work. It will not only make visitors remember the works, but also the place. The National Museums Collection Centre at Granton, Edinburgh, provides a home for many of the objects and specimens that are not currently on display in the museums. The new museum could provide places to display them. The National Museum has an extensive collection which includes art and design, natural science, Scottish history, and world cultures, etc. The new museum at Granton will focus on exhibitions like art and design, Scottish coastal customs, and ocean science, etc. As based on the collection centre, some public research labs can be built to show the process of researches.
