Type: Academic Tutor:Dai Daixin Collaborators in model: Zhang Yuewen Individual part: Case analysis and garden design

Project statement

Location:Suzhou,China Size:735 m2 Project narrative:Traditional Chinese garden is the treasure in Chinese culture. The principles in creating space showed the idea of space and the wisdom of life in ancient China, which still have the significance for reference. For further understanding of traditional Chinese garden,we chose a garden as a case to study, and reconsturcted the space into modern style. Then,a garden located in Suzhou was specially designed.

CASE STUDY

MASTER OF THE NETS GARDEN

The case we chose to study is one of the finest gardens in China—master of the nets garden. The designer created an open visual experience in a tiny site of 4200 m² .The dominant gardening methods used in the garden are spacial contrast ,void-solid sequence, and surroundings enclosure.

Spacial model reconstruct

The spacial model was reconstructed into modern style by three steps: 1.Distinguished different levels of enclosure. 2.Translated the traditonal enclosing princples into modern style. 3.Used folded plates to reconstructed the garden model as an abstract way.

entrance

In small traditional gardens, arranging a tiny space before the core area to creat a feeling of wideness is the basic principle of spacial contrast.

Void-solid sequence

The relationship between void and solid decides the feeling of space in one traditional Chinese garden.A rhythmed sequence of void-solid scequence lay the foundation of a richful viewing.

Surroundings enclosure

Behind some stumbling blocks, the big sized structures are to concealed. Being close to water ,the small strctures offer indoor space without obstructing too much sights.

曲水流觞

Floating wine cup along the winding water

CULTURE BACKGROUNDS

“Qu Shui Liu Shang” is originated from an ancient Chinese festival custom. In Wei and Jin Dynasty, the custom developed into a widespread popular activity among literators. Floating wine cup along the winding water, literators stand by the river at the same time, waiting the cup stop by itself. Then the literator nearest to the cup must make a impromptu poem. The size of winding water reduced when it was introduced into a private garden in Song Dynasty.Without enough space, the spirits of intellectuals became more important than the function of floating cup.

No music is provided, but with drinking and with song, our hearts are joyful and at ease. ——At the Oechid Pavilion ,Jin Dynasty

“Why the water is so clear in the dyke For the fresh water comes from springhead” “a pavilion close to the spring like the wings of birds. It is Old Tipper’s Pavilion.”

Designing context The site is located beside a series of traditional domestic architectures in Suzhou,China. The owner of the site is a young man who is addicted to Song Dynasty poem,so he’d like to own a private place to learn it and to share skills with friends. As a citizen,he always has a dream to live in a natural place without noise and crowds.

“There lies a glassy oblong pool, Where light and shade pursue their course.”

“Floating wine cup along the winding water, making friends by exchanging poem skills.”

“Tasting classic poems Intoning latest articles.”

TREELY GREEN SYSTEM

[Hongqiao district’s green system renewal]

02/2010-04/2010

Type : Academic Tutor : Dai Daixin Collaborators in survey: Jiang Xin,Zhang Yutao,Wang Meilin Individual part : Collecting data of greenland in residential district while surveying.General plan, nodes design.

Project statement

Location:Changning District,Shanghai. Size:284.07 hectares Site narrative:The site is one of the earliest Economic and Technological Development Zones west to the city center.According to the Great Hongqiao region plan by the authority, the green system built in 1990s needs a renovation.During the survey, the lively CBD district and the outdate residentiial district impressed me a lot.So a treely renovation strategy which can promote the two parts in different methods came to my mind.

16

SWOT—Strengths It is a big advantage that 69.56 hectares of the site are greenland. The ratio of greenland is 25%.

SWOT—Weakness

Public green land

SITE ANALYSIS

The unbalanced distribution of greenland leads to low rate of usage. The development gap between the CBD and the old residential district is large.

SWOT—Opportunities

S

Businessl buildings

The construction of Hongqiao Integrated Transportation Hub brings new oppotunities to the district. There will be 3 metro lines in the area.

SWOT—Threats The shortage of unused area make the renewal of the district a complex thing. The blurry functional zones in this district might cause a sprawl. The office buidings constructed in 1990s fails to meet the current needs.

he present number of green patches in this area is enough,But the present corridors are weak. The exisiting roads are minor roads, and the underground space has been developed to some extent. The underground transportation system is created in this district. The ground roads are transformed into green corridors. Several ground crossing nodes are developed into nodes of green corridors. The indoor vertical nodes are selected according to the exsiting underground space. The outdoor vertical nodes are created according to the green patches.

uilt in 1980s,the typcal style of the residences is low height and high density ,the landescape of this area is disorder and crowded. Most of the present residents in this area are elders. In the questionnaire, most of them prefer to stay outside near home and to bask in sunshine. So,several adjustable corridors were picked up to undertake the function of green corridor, and to complete the skeleton of the green system. Some roadside green spaces are created to adjust the greenland distribution, and to provide more useful green spaces.

Because of the high noise and poor air quality along the SouthNorth elavated road, the site,an internal path beside the road, gradually became an important passway. Meanwhile, some onestoryed shops were opened to meet the needs of the passer-bys. As the street becomes more and more lively, the visual quality there becomes worse and worse. As a internal green corridor of the district, the style of the buildings must be transformed into a landscape-friendly one.

Taegeukdo Village——“Korean Santorini” The village was formed by refuge of Korean War,1950. On the undulated mountain, shacks were built with wood panels. In order to let the returned refugees find their home again, every shacks was painted into a unique color. The shacks were transformed into concrete blocks walls and slat roof after the war, at the same location and in the same size. But the style and color was remained. Nowadays, about 4,000 people lived here as a community. As more and more artists begin to notice the beautiful village, many shacks were transformed into art studio.Although local residents from Taegeukdo become less and less, the sense of the community still remained.

VILLAGE RENOVATION STRATEGY CITY ACUPUNCTURE——The inspiration came from the traditional Chinese therapy. By renovating selected points in advance, the local tradition can be preserved to the full extent, meanwhile, the potential of the village can be activated gradually.

MASTER PLAN The acupuncture process comprises three steps: 1.Facilities needed places are selected and developed. The village will become a place with comfortable environment.

2.Gathering places with a service radius of 50m are selected and developed. The village will become a place with attractive culture. 3.Community centers with a service radius of 100m are selected and developed. The village will become a place with a perfect system with emotional appeals.

Emotional elements

Backing from the village,a wasted well left deep impression to us.We guessed that many years ago, space around the well must have been a lively place and many stories must have happened there everyday. So we selected the well as a traditional symbol, and used it as a center to link the three emotional elements. Finally, creating staires to emotional paradise.

Terraced field from the hill to the site can link the mountain and the residence, meanwhile,it can provide a traditional farming style. Using the existing vertical condition to create a rainfall recycling system.Transform the well into a center water plaza.Residents here could experience water and remember past.

Project statement: As the most prospective group in China, university students are suitable for popularizing cycling trip.During summer vocation in 2010,three team members and I searched the Yangpu District,Shanghai,to match university campuses and parks. After searching,we selected the optimum bikeway route for each pair, and popularized cycling trip along it in each campus. The route from Tongji University to Peace Park was chosen as an design example.
