WELCOME TO EMIRATES AIRLINE PARK, HOME OF THE EMIRATES LIONS TODAY WE WELCOME the Sharks to our home turf and we look forward to a clash which has always offered a fastpaced game with much action in the past, and we wait in anticipation to see what these two teams will produce tonight. A big thank you is extended to Vodacom for making this exciting competition possible. A heartfelt thank you to each and every sponsor and partner for your support and especially thank you to Emirates, our team sponsor. It is an honour and privilege to have you backing us.Your support, on all levels, is invaluable and we are proud to have you as not only our team sponsor but our partner and friend. Today we will for the first time this season have two schools from outside

the GLRU borders in action. HTS Middelburg and Ermelo face one another in the Beeld Trophy (Noordvaal) competition. I want to laud our CEO Rudolf Straeuli for this initiative which will see school boy rugby in all our Vodacom Super Rugby curtain raisers. Good luck to coach Johan Ackermann and captain Warren Whiteley for this tough encounter. Please remember to visit our website www.lionsrugby.co.za for all your Lions rugby news. LIONS WHO HAVE SHARKS TIES • 11 www.lionsrugby.co.za

LIONS WHO HAVE SHARKS TIES IT HAPPENED IN the pre-professional era, and it has escalated since 1996 that players change provincial allegiance. In the old days the moves were more lucrative (full-time) job offers, today they change for more lucrative contracts Be that as it may, there is an interesting number of management and players in the present Lions camp that have ties with Sharks rugby. Kevin de Klerk, the president of the GLRU and a really famous Springbok, played for the former Natal, in 1979, albeit in only one match in which he captained the Banana Boys as Natal were called in those days.

In later years Straeuli coached the Sharks to two Currie Cup finals in two years (in 2000 when he coached only the Currie Cup side and in 2001), also taking the side to the final of the then Super 12 competition in 2001. After his stint as Springbok coach he was appointed as the Sharks commercial manager at the end of 2005 before moving to the GLRU at the end of 2013. Ironically Straeuli’s last game for the Golden Lions was in the 1996 Currie Cup final against the Sharks.

But, as Kevin admits, the lure of Transvaal and Transvaal rugby brought him back to Johannesburg post haste!

Johan Ackermann, the Lions head coach, played for the Sharks in both Currie Cup and Super Rugby matches from 2004-2008, his playing years in Durban overlapping to some extent with Straeuli when he was commercial manager.

Rudolf Straeuli, the Lions CEO, was one of the 11 Transvaal players in the Springbok squad that won the 1995 World Cup at Ellis Park, now Emirates Airline Park.

Swys de Bruin, assistant coach at the Lions, began his professional rugby career at the Sharks in 1996, where he was appointed as the coaching coordinator. In 1997 he steered the Sharks

U21s to national success as head coach. He was also the head coach of the Wildebeest side in 1998. De Bruin was then head coach at Griquas from 1999 to 2003 and coached the SA U21 team in 2001. He was involved in the Sharks Academy in 2004, when he was appointed head coach. He also assisted the Sharks senior squad as Super XV skills coach during this time and coached the Sharks XV, Sharks U21 and Sharks U19 sides between 2005 and 2011. In 2012, De Bruin worked as the high performance coach at the Sharks. THE PLAYERS Warren Whiteley was in the Sharks Super and Currie Cup squad in 2008/’09 but never represented them, although he did play for Sharks age group teams and the Wildebeest. He matriculated from Glenwood High after attending Laerskool Dirkie Uys in Durban (his mother is Afrikaans speaking). (Just to accentuate the ‘bond’ between the two rugby unions, Whiteley was coaxed over to the Lions by former Sharks coach Dick Muir who was then head coach of the Lions!) Julian Redelinghuys, from Monument Hoërskool, played for the Golden Lions and SA Schools sides in 2006 and 2007. In the following five years in Durban he played for the SA U20 team and also represented the Sharks at Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup level but never played for the Super Rugby team although being

in the wider group. He moved back to the Lions in 2013, and the rest is history. Lionel Mapoe represent the Junior Springboks and the Blitzboks and was on the brink of Springbok selection in 2009. He left the Cheetahs after a contractual dispute and signed a contract with the Sharks in May 2010, but because of injuries and the continued contract controversy never represent the Durban franchise. Ross Cronje, who was schooled at Michaelhouse where Springboks Pat Lambie and Ruan Combrinck were contemporaries, played for the Sharks at both Currie Cup and Super Rugby level and represented the Junior Springboks in 2009. He moved to the Lions in 2012. Ruan Combrinck, who played his first two test matches in the last fortnight, never played for the Sharks. However, he is a born and bred KwaZulu-Natalian. He attended Laerskool Lucas Maree in Vryheid where he was born and then Michaelhouse. Thereafter he played for the Maties in the Varsity Cup and also Western Province without making a real breakthrough He moved to the Lions in 2012. Andries Coetzee, who only made his return for the Golden Lions after injury in a Currie Cup qualifier last weekend, played for the Sharks on loan in 2013 when the Lions were out of the Super Rugby competition for which they requalified in 2014. (Lions Springbok Franco van der Merwe and veteran flank Derick Minnie were also Sharks loan players in 2013).
