PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome back to Emirates Airline Park! On behalf of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, I would like to welcome our friends from the Cell C Sharks to Emirates Airline Park today. To the visiting president, Graham Mackenzie, the visiting chairman Steven Saad, Chief Executive Officer John Smit and their staff a special word of welcome. I also bid a warm welcome to the entire Cell C Sharks team to the stadium here this afternoon. Welcome to our equity partner Altmann Allers, CEO Rudolf Straeuli, GLRU staff and Emirates Lions head coach Johan Ackermann and his team and management. Welcome to our most trusted and valued supporters, and thank you for your support. We trust that you enjoy every moment of the action on the field! To be coming off the back of the best Lions tour in Super Rugby history and then go on to beat a strong Vodacom Bulls side last weekend has to be highly commended. We are all immensely proud of our captain Warren Whiteley and our team, however we do know that a tough few weeks still lie ahead. We have full faith in our team and know we will succeed. Our players have stood up so well with minimal injuries this season. Following today’s encounter, the team will enjoy a most important break – and how sweet it will be to go into this break with another win under our belts! We do hope this target becomes a reality this evening. Good luck to Warren and the rest of the Emirates Lions team! Please help us to keep the Emirates Lions profile where it belongs and help us to stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White! Lastly but certainly not least, thank you to our sponsors without whom none of this would be possible: Emirates, Xerox, 947, Canterbury, Huawei, Jonsson, Sun International, USN, Tsogo Sun and Vox. ENJOY THE GAME! Kevin de Klerk GLRU PRESIDENT www.lionsrugby.co.za 5

To demonstrate that the website means business, renowned South African sports scientist Ross Tucker has also added his superior knowledge to the growing body of insightful work on the site. In one of his latest contributions, Tucker takes a look at doping in South African rugby, and defines a solution that might just prevent an epidemic – and save South Africa’s rugby reputation. “Unfortunately, South Africa occupies the dubious position of being the most suspected country in this regard,” Tucker writes. “Part of this reputation, ironically enough, is the result of our own introspection. No other country has turned the microscope on itself and asked uncomfortable questions about doping, particularly in their schools, as much as we have.” Read the full article on Vodacom.co.za/rugby where you will find more food for thought on the platform where Vodacom Super Rugby lives! Armand ‘Akker’ van der Merwe

TRY TIME!

By: Tarryn Steenekamp Few will forget the jubilation – and heartbreak for some – which filled Emirates Airline Park as the full time siren echoed last Saturday. It cannot be argued that the last-gasp try which resulted in a four-point win for the Emirates Lions was something special. The name on everybody’s lips this week has been no other than the try-scorer himself – Armand ‘Akker’ van der Merwe. Van der Merwe was ecstatic as he dotted down in the dying minutes and takes us through his emotions at the time. “Wow – what an experience!” exclaims Van der Merwe. “To be honest, I can’t really explain the joy I experienced when I scored. I guess I was just at the right place at the right time and I am so lucky that Faf played to me so I could finish off. I think everybody could see how ecstatic I was!” Van der Merwe believes the Emirates Lions’ tour of Australasia played a major role in last weekend’s win as the group has been able to gel together and develop a new level of camaraderie. “It really has been a great few weeks for us and we are really happy with the way the competition is going for us,” he says. “The tour was great for us as a team because we really matured as a group and reached a new level of unity I believe. We have a strong brotherhood.” The 23-year-old hooker is quick to look past the successes of late, however, and is keen to focus on the weeks that lie ahead. “We all know Super Rugby is so unpredictable and our goal is to stay consistent and improve each week,” shares Van der Merwe. “It is extremely important to win local derbies in

this competition and winning home games is not even negotiable, so we need to ensure we play to our full potential over the upcoming weeks.” Looking ahead to today’s fixture against the Cell C Sharks, Van der Merwe knows that the opposition will come out firing – especially after their highly criticised loss to the Crusaders and their recent discipline concerns. “The Crusaders didn’t do us any favours this weekend by beating the Sharks,” he explains. “The Sharks will really come at us. People are so quick to forget how much talent this Sharks side has and we are not reading much into their loss against the Crusaders because we were dealt the same blow and were able to pick ourselves up! I expect the same from them. “The Sharks are a quality outfit and we just have to trust our systems and stick to the structure and hopefully that pays off.” Van der Merwe understands how big a difference mass support has made and he thus gives credit to the supporters who have stuck by the Emirates Lions throughout this year’s tournament. “I am so grateful to every single fan that has come out to support us this year and over the past seasons. We are so thankful for your support and would like to encourage you to continue to come to our games as every single one of you makes a big difference for us.”

Captaincy comes

naturally for

number eight By: Piet Ebersohn As the main link between the forwards and the backline, the number eight occupies a natural position to captain a rugby team. Incumbent leader Warren Whitely is the latest of a number of excellent captains that led the Golden Lions and its predecessors from the back of the scrum. Four of them were Springbok test captains, while the GLRU’s CEO Rudolf Straeuli led the Boks in midweek matches. Incidentally (or maybe not so), the attributes required of a good captain are largely the same as those for a good number eight. He is part of the spine of the rugby team, starting at the hooker and running through the No 8 to the halfbacks and stopping at the fullback. • He is therefore a key decision-maker. As such it is critical that he is outstanding in reading the game and has well-developed anticipation. • A No 8 should also be mentally alert, have good communication skills and be able to direct and control the game. • In linking the forwards and backs he has a decisive role in the redistribution of the ball. His decision-making of when to run and when to distribute is of paramount importance. 12 www.lionsrugby.co.za

To fulfil his role as a player the No 8 needs to be extremely fit and strong, be a good defender and above all have a sound knowledge of the rules. No wonder then that some of the erstwhile Transvaal and later Golden Lions’ greatest captains played their rugby with a number eight on their back – even in the days when the numbering started with the fullback as number one. Hennie Muller is probably the most famous of them all, but there were also Boy Morkel, Jannie Breedt, Rudolf Straeuli and André Vos, all of whom captained the Springboks, as well as Chick Henderson and Anton Oberholzer. • Boy Morkel, who played for Pirates and for Transvaal from 1920 to 1924 never captained the Transvaal provincial team, but led South Africa in all three tests on the 1921 tour of New Zealand when the tour captain, Theo Pienaar, dropped out of the tests due to injury. • Hennie Muller, whose legendary speed earned him the nickname “Windhond” (Greyhound), played for East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM) and captained South Africa in nine of the thirteen tests he played. He played for Transvaal from 1943 to 1952 and led the province in 17 matches, before he “defected” to Western Province. • Muller played for South Africa against the 1949 All Blacks and then captained the

• •

national team on the 1951-52 tour against Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England and France. Muller was with WP when he skippered the Springboks against the 1953 Wallabies. Chick Henderson, who played for Wanderers and became a famous rugby commentator, captained Transvaal in 1959 and 1960 in ten matches. He represented Scotland in nine tests, albeit at lock and flanker, from 1952 to 1954. Anton Oberholzer played for Diggers and was Transvaal captain 19 times from 1972 to 1975. Jannie Breedt (Wanderers) holds the record of leading Transvaal 102 times from 1986 to 1992. Breedt represented South Africa in eight tests and captained the Springboks in two tests against a World XV in 1989. Rudolf Straeuli (Wanderers), CEO of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, led the province in 14 matches from 1993 to 1996. He played in ten tests, scoring four tries. He led the Springboks against Cardiff, Wales A and Irish Provinces on their 1994 tour of the United Kingdom. André Vos, being a member of West Rand Harlequins for whom he never played, was captain of the Golden Lions in 29 matches from 1998 to 2002. He was capped 33 times for South Africa and the captain in 16 tests.

An impressive number of eighth men from other provinces also captained South Africa: They were – • Billy Millar (WP, 1910-13, captain in five tests) • Des van Jaarsveld (Rhodesia, 1960, captain in one test as a flank although he was Rhodesia’s No 8) • Tommy Bedford (Natal, 1969, captain in three tests) • Morné du Plessis (WP, 1975-1980, captain in 15 tests) • Wynand Claassen (Natal, 1981, captain in seven tests) • Adriaan Richter (Northern Transvaal, 1995, captain in one test) • Gary Teichman (Natal, 1996-99, captain in 36 tests) • Bobby Skinstad (WP, 2001-2007, captain in 12 tests).

From second league to South africa’s seventh best By: Piet Ebersohn

International Rugby Academy in 2010.

In 2012 the Wanderers Rugby Club was still playing in the Golden Lions second league, the Senior Grand Challenge. This past Easter weekend the Kent Park in Illovo was one of the quarter finalists in the Community Cup competition, the national championship for nonuniversity clubs, at Rustenburg.

Wanderers achieved second place in the 2014 Pirates Grand Challenge behind Raiders, thereby qualifying for the play-offs to earn a runners-up spot in the 2015 Community Cup competition.

They eventually claimed seventh place by beating Wesbank from Malmesbury 45-35 on the last day of play and acquitted themselves well in the first two matches of a very tough competition. When Wanderers returned to the Pirates Grand Challenge in 2013 after 16 years in the second league the club showed immediately that it meant business. Wanderers finished sixth out of ten clubs and fourth of the open clubs. The team was never outclassed in any of their matches. It earned coach Neil Kalify the club’s Chairman’s Award, presented to a member of the rugby section whose efforts, attitude and approach had done Wanderers rugby a great service throughout the year. Kalify represented Transvaal at Craven Week and U.21 level and they joined Wanderers after completing his studies at the Wits Technikon. He moved to Pirates a few years later. After his playing days he started coaching at Pirates but returned to Wanderers and got the club back into the top league. He scored top marks when attending All Black Murray Mexted’s

They then beat Brakpan (Valke) 45-39 in the second round and Sasol (Pumas) 35-20 in the third and the second spot in Pool C ensured their participation in the quarter finals in Rustenburg. It was reminiscent of the famous club that graced club rugby in Johannesburg for more a century and won the Pirates Grand Challenge for the first time in 1902. A number of young rugby players first ventured into club rugby as the first Wanderers Rugby Club in Johannesburg in 1887, “wandering” from other mining towns, like Kimberley. A Wanderers Cricket Club followed suit, but the Wanderers Club that still exists today was formed in 1888. After approaching Paul Kruger, president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, in person the request for a sports field in Johannesburg was granted on condition that an umbrella club be formed for all sports. A club, I Zingari, was formed after the famous English cricket club by that name, but eventually the “second” Wanderers Rugby Club was not happy with that and worked with the Wanderers Cricket Club to form the Wanderers Sports Club. They took ownership of the grounds situated www.lionsrugby.co.za 25

where the Park Railway Station is found today and it became the home of all sports disciplines in early Johannesburg. It was decided that the club’s colour would be maroon. An order for maroon rugby jerseys was placed in Cape Town. However, the only jerseys available were the black, gold and red of Hamiltons and were sent to Wanderers. That duly became the club’s colours – and in a strange twist of irony it was also the colours of I Zingari! Wanderers have won the Pirates Grand Challenge Cup three times and 34 Springboks

played for the club over the years. A Wanderers125 side selected from the greats in their history on the occasion of their 125th anniversary in 2012, included 14 players with international experience – twelve Springboks, and an Irish (John Robbie) and an Italian (Tito Lupini) internationals. The only non-international in the ‘team’ was the former tearaway Transvaal flanker Simon Norwood. Currently, Wanderers fields three senior teams, U-21 and U-19 teams as well as junior rugby teams.

Wits lose Varsity Shield final After leading the Varsity Shield competition virtually from the outset, the Johannesburg students will not have the opportunity to challenge for promotion on Monday (April 13) after they lost 2429 to UKZN Impi’s last Monday night. A word of congratulations must nevertheless go to Wits coach Hugo van As and his team for the excellent rugby they played in the competition. Wits were undefeated and earned six trybonus points in eight matches.
