PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome back to Emirates Airline Park! On behalf of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, I wish to welcome all of our supporters back to Emirates Airline Park for our two matches here today. A special word of welcome to our equity partner Altmann Allers, Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli and all management and staff to our ground here today. We also welcome the Brumbies team management, coaching staff, captain and team to Emirates Airline Park as well. We all join in in expressing our sincere gratitude towards Emirates Lions coach Johan Ackermann and his coaching staff for their hard work so far this season. To our captain Warren Whiteley and our team, we applaud each and every one of you for a great performance this year. We have reached the same outcomes we did last year in Super Rugby and we look set to surpass that substantially with four games to go. We have silenced our critics and are answering our supporters. Well done! Our encounter today will be a tough one, against a truly formidable Brumbies side. However, the evidence of our performances up to date shows that we can overcome these tough sides in this competition. Good luck Johan and the team, you are making us all proud. Lastly but certainly not least, thank you to our sponsors without whom none of this would be possible: Emirates, Xerox, 947, Canterbury, Huawei, Jonsson, Sun International, USN, Tsogo Sun and Vox. Please help us to keep the Emirates Lions profile where it belongs and help us to stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White! We are also STRONGLY opposed to booing in our stadium and want to encourage supporters to keep all forms of the game clean and show respect for the opposition. ENJOY TODAY’S MATCH! ELTON JANTJIES BACK WHERE HE BELONGS Flyhalf Elton Jantjies has had a stellar 2015 season so far as he has gone on to cement his place in the Emirates Lions starting side and has caught the attention of the Springbok selectors once again. Tarryn Steenekamp caught up with him for a Q&A ahead of today’s match against the Brumbies at Emirates Airline Park. 10 www.lionsrugby.co.za

It must be a brilliant feeling to have ground out some crucial wins this season with the Emirates Lions and be a part of a team which is constantly on the up at the moment. How does playing for a winning team affect your personal game and confidence as a player? Jantjies: Being a member of a winning team is something very special to me and winning is always important to us as a group. The current performances are what we all wanted to create at the Lions and building a strong culture and growing the brand is something that we are really working hard at. Being a part of this set-up is an honour as we are a group that has stayed together for several years. I really need to say a big thank you to the coaches for creating this special environment and building one of the best cultures to be a part of.

always being able to gain confidence from my preparation during the week. Finding form is easy for me to do suddenly in one week but the toughest is being consistent and staying at the top of your game. Being able to be the best for a full season or several seasons, now that’s true form!

What is the attitude and spirit like in the camp at the moment after your recent successes? Jantjies: The vibe in the Lions group is awesome at the moment. We are a special group together and we are always willing to learn and work hard with and for each other. It is great to be a part of a group that listens to each other for solutions and also backs each other no matter what.

The Brumbies are going to want to bounce back after narrowly losing to the Stormers last weekend. What do you think of them as a team? What do you think they will bring to the game and how do the Emirates Lions plan to counter that? Jantjies: The Brumbies game today is going to be massive and it is a game I have been looking forward to. They are one of the top sides and we know as a group we are going to have to be smarter and play full-out for the full 80 minutes. I think this match is going to be our biggest challenge so far and we are going to have to step it up mentally to beat them.

You have had a brilliant Super Rugby tournament so far. What would you say have been the secrets behind you doing so well this year and finding form? Jantjies: For me it is all about staying in the moment and making sure that I continue to improve and keep on growing day-by-day. You are never too old or too good to keep learning more. It is always great when things work out well but for me the challenge was always to be a consistent performer for my team and to keep adding something unique to the team. I am working on that every day. For me it is crucial to train hard and smart and to just stay in the moment. I really see every training session as a session where I can improve upon all aspects of my game. I want to be the complete 10 one day and to

You are back in the Bok mix. How does it feel to be involved there again? Jantjies: It really is great to be back in the Bok setup. That was my first goal that I wrote down ahead of 2015 and again, it is a great achievement but it is about remaining consistent and securing a place for a long period and settling well for the future. Putting on a Springbok training jersey is special for me to do again but for now it is all about the Lions and concentrating on our processes here.

The fans have really started to come out in their numbers and the support has picked up at Emirates Airline Park. How important is it to have the large crowds at games and how do they influence you as a team? Jantjies: It is always great to see Emirates Airline Park full. It always reminds me of the Currie Cup semi-final and final in 2011 and the amazing things we achieved as a team then. Just knowing that we have the crowd’s support behind us is an indescribable feeling. We do it all for them and our families and everyone that’s behind our brand.

Do-or-die

match

against a feisty foe

By: Piet Ebersohn The Emirates Lions’ match against the Brumbies at Emirates Airlines Park today is a do-or-die challenge for the home team in more way than one. They have to win to keep their Vodacom Super Rugby play-off hopes alive and they can also work to close the gap in matches against the Brumbies. 12 www.lionsrugby.co.za

Since their first meeting in 2007 the Emirates Lions have beaten the Brumbies only once out of five clashes. Before that the Emirates Lions were part of the Cats franchise in partnership of what became the Central Cheetahs (now Cheetahs) in 2007. The visitors’ record since the inception of Super Rugby in 1996 shows their undoubted class. The Brumbies claimed the title twice (2001, 2004), lost four finals (1997, 2000, 2002, 2013) and twice in semi-finals (2003, 2013). The Emirates Lions have never yet reached

the play-offs, but while playing as part of the combined Cats team lost in the semi-finals in 2000 and 2001. This year may be the Emirates Lions’ first real opportunity to reach the play-offs. They have shown some gutsy play and a knack to come back spectacularly this season. They are strongly knocking on the play-off door, but cannot afford to lose today. The five encounters hitherto were all closely fought, even nail-biting contests and today’s match should not be no exception.

FLASHBACK!

2007 Brumbies win 14-9 at Ellis Park The first clash between the two teams was a real humdinger, with the half-time score even at 6-6.

With Huxley leading the way, the two kickers exchanges penalties to the tune of 3-0, 3-3, 6-3, 6-6, 9-6 and 9-9.

The Brumbies fullback Julian Huxley scored every one of his team’s 14 points with a try and three penalties. André Pretorius did likewise for the Emirates Lions with three penalties.

Shortly before the end of the match Huxley scored the try that sealed the home team’s fate as the Emirates Lions knocked on in a scoring position two minutes before the final whistle.

2008 Brumbies win 28-21 in Canberra The Emirates Lions lost their second encounter with the Brumbies in the last seconds when the Aussie flyhalf Christian Lealiifano cut through their defence to score a converted try, breaking a 21-21 deadlock to win 28-21. Bottom-of-the-log Emirates Lions shocked the Brumbies when flanker Cobus Grobbelaar scored a converted try within the first minute. The Brumbies skipper Stirling Mortlock answered with two

penalties and a goal to give his team a 13-7 lead at half time. It again came as a surprise when the Emirates Lions’ fullback Earl Rose crossed the home try line twice within the first ten minutes of the second half for his team to lead by 21-13. The home team caught up with wing Mark Gerrard to score a try and a penalty (2121).

www.lionsrugby.co.za 13

2009 Lions win 25-17 at Ellis Park It was a poor Emirates Lions season. They won only four matches and ended third from last, but their 2009 victory over the Brumbies is their only one in Super Rugby to date. Springbok fly half André Pretorius scored ten points for the victors with two conversions, a penalty and a drop goal. The Emirates Lions took the lead in the 14th minute when Springbok centre Jaque Fourie scored a try. Scrumhalf Jano

Vermaak added another, and Stirling Mortlock replied for the Brumbies. The halftime score was 15-10 in the Emirates Lions’ favour. The Brumbies then took the lead for the first time in the 44th minute when Mark Chisholm charged down a kick to score. It was short lived, however, as Pretorius regained the lead with a penalty and fullback Louis Ludik put the result beyond doubt with a try (25-17).

2010 Brumbies win 24-13 in Canberra Another unhappy season saw the Emirates Lions without a single win and stone last on the log. The Johannesburg-based team’s brave stand against the Brumbies in Canberra was however widely applauded. They denied the ACT team a fourth try and thereby a bonus point. But poor discipline cost the Emirates Lions dearly. A yellow card, a penalty and penalty try saw the Brumbies lead 10-3 at halftime.

A second penalty by Burton Francis narrowed the gap to 13-6 before Christian Lealiifano scored for the home team, Matt Giteau converting to take the lead to 17-6. In the 52nd minute Hannes Franklin dived over a ruck to score under the Brumbies posts (17-13). The visitors’ hopes were thwarted four minutes later when Stephen Moore added a converted try to the Brumbies score line (24-13).

2012 Brumbies win 34-20 at Ellis Park The Emirates Lions didn’t play the Brumbies in 2011. In 2012 they were again at the bottom of the log, winning only three matches. In this 2012 match the Emirates Lions had most of the possession but employed a kick-and-chase strategy that didn’t work. The Brumbies, coached by ex-Springbok coach Jake White, ran in six tries – two

by Henry Speight – to claim a convincing victory. They led by 34-6 before the Emirates Lions’ belated fight-back, which brought converted tries by Jaco Taute and Caylib Oosthuizen to end the match at 34-20. Elton Jantjes kicked two penalties and two conversions for a total of ten points.

• The Emirates Lions did not participate in Super Rugby in 2013 and did not play the Brumbies last season. 14 www.lionsrugby.co.za

'Pirates is the By: Piet Ebersohn Pirates Rugby Club in Greenside is not your run-of-the-mill rugby club. It is a club that strives to the norm of being relevant to the local community and to create an environment where the families and the community feel welcome. And they are achieving this, says Brad Guymer, the club’s chairman. “The 1 500 to 2 000 supporters at the club for junior rugby on Saturday mornings, and the same number when the senior sides play in the afternoon, are proof that we are on the right track.” Guymer says Pirates have always prided themselves on being not only a strong rugby club, but also a great social venue. However, there was a time that the club lost focus in this regard. “Now the club is in what can be called a transformation phase. The current committee continues to build the image and branding of the club: ‘Pirates is the place to be’ which was started two years ago. “We want a family-friendly feeling. The club should not be for players only, going home straight after a match. We are now getting back to be a relevant place to be for our community.” Guymer says that, with the image and branding in place, Pirates are now starting to concentrate on their rugby. “It is a great honour to be the current custodian of the club’s 127-year-old heritage, and it is a privilege not only for the players to step out on 28 www.lionsrugby.co.za

a Saturday in the Pirates colours, but also for the supporters to be associated with the club.” The club’s mission is to be the best open club, not only in Gauteng, but in the country. Its ambition is to get into the series for the Community Cup “and stay there year in and year out on a sustainable basis.” Guymer says the new coaches Bradley Wilken and Michael Bondesio are both doing an excellent job to get the club to the top. Bondesio still played for the Lions last year and joined the club upon his retirement. “We also established a high performance gymnasium. We again have a fourth team, the first time for some years. All four senior teams are strong. “Our U19 and U20 teams are also doing well, backed by our Pirates Schools Challenge,” says the clearly committed and content chairman. Social media plays an important role to knit the Pirates community into a tight unit, says Guymer. The club can be followed on Facebook at Pirates Rugby Club or on Twitter at @piratesrugga. CLUB HISTORY The Pirates Rugby Club was formed in 1888, a year before the establishment of the Transvaal Rugby Football Union (TRFU), by players of the Pirates club in Kimberley who moved from the diamond fields to the newly discovered gold fields of the Witwatersrand. They lost 1-0 (a try counting one in those

e place to be' Owen Nkumane, Grant Esterhuyzen and Gavin Johnson. Harold Sanderson, who was president of the TRFU and headed the Union for a record 31 years – from 1934-64 – also played for Pirates. Pieter Visser, for many years club manager at Pirates, has four national rugby blazers (two for sevens and two for fifteens) in his cupboard. He was manager of the Emerging Springboks for two tours to the Safari Sevens in Nairobi and then of the Blitzboks in the 2007-08 IRB Sevens World Series; of the Emerging SA team which successfully defended their title in Bucharest in the IRB Nations Cup in 2008; and of the Springboks on Jake White’s last tour in 2007. days) to Pretoria in the very first Transvaal championship final in 1889 at the Wanderers in Kruger Park. However, Pirates turned the tables and won the championship over the next five years until 1894.

Pirates’ centre Kevin Foote, now on the coaching staff of the Western Force, was a Springbok sevens captain while at Pirates.

Initially the cup was called the Imroth Trophy. After winning it three years in a row it became the property of Pirates. The club returned it to the TRFU for the club competition. It has since been known as the Pirates Grand Challenge Cup. Pirates produced many of the early Springboks, including MC van Buuren and Japie Louw who played against the British team, the first international team to tour South Africa in 1891. Other Springboks playing for the club include Boy Morkel, Tank van Rooyen, Jack Gage, Tony Harris, Freddie Turner, Frank Waring, Morris Zimerman, Okey Geffin, Kaya Malotana, www.lionsrugby.co.za 29
