PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to Emirates Airline Park for our final Vodacom Super Rugby home game! On behalf of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, I wish to welcome all of our supporters back to Emirates Airline Park, following our successful stint away in Bloemfontein against the Cheetahs last weekend. I am sincerely and deeply overjoyed about our side’s bestever results in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition to date. Congratulations to the team! The collective work of every individual in this Union has resulted in the success of 2015. Together coach Johan Ackermann, captain Warren Whiteley and their team of young men of great courage have done us proud to achieve this enormous milestone for Lions Rugby. Our fans also have played their usual great and most valuable role – thank you! As one must reflect at this time, the race is never over until the end of this competition! We are still in contention for a possible play-off spot and we need to stay focused. We wish to welcome the Waratahs management, coaching staff, captain and team to Emirates Airline Park. We trust you enjoy our stay with us! To our equity partner Altmann Allers, we remain forever grateful for your vision ,courage and invaluable contribution that has enabled us as a business to go forward and strive towards that ultimate vision we want to achieve. Welcome to our Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli. We thank him for his great contribution in providing sound business and effective management in our Union this season. The drive and energy he has brought to the GLRU is enormous and has already delivered great results. Welcome to my Board and Exco members that are in attendance today. Lastly but certainly not least, thank you to our sponsors without whom none of this would be possible: Emirates, Xerox, 947, Canterbury, Huawei, Jonsson, Sun International, USN, Tsogo Sun and Vox. Please help us to keep the Emirates Lions profile where it belongs and help us to stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White! We are also STRONGLY opposed to booing in our stadium and want to encourage supporters to keep all forms of the game clean and show respect for the opposition. ENJOY TODAY’S MATCH! The refs simply can’t win! Referees are always in rugby’s cross-fire. But, spare a thought for these much maligned officials. In addition to the applying the complicated rules of the game on a split-second basis, they must continuously be on the lookout not to be outwitted by players always ready to test them. Here are a few examples of what they have to put up with: Way back then Vereeniging and Diggers were still playing in the Pirates Grand Challenge, and theirs was the toughest contest in the old Transvaal club competitions.

the leading referee, Ginger Otto, stood alongside.

In one of their matches in the Pirates League, Diggers led by a small margin with only minutes to play. Vereeniging’s fly-half and scoring machine, Springbok Gerald Bosch, was kicking for goal and the lead.

“We’d like to wallop them (Diggers) a bit.”

Vereeniging captain Bosman was next to Bosch as he placed the ball, and

16 www.lionsrugby.co.za

“Ginger,” Bosman requested the referee, “please, turn a blind eye after the kick.

The kick went over. Otto, experienced and sensing trouble, blew the final whistle a few minutes early and Vereeniging won the match. The Diggers players were highly upset

being denied the opportunity to reclaim the lead and made no bones about it. Only then Otto realised that he was tricked Gabriel Pappas, long-serving member of the Golden Lions Referees’ Society who was made an honorary life member of the SA Rugby Referees Association, recalls a day when he officiated as a touch judge (now an assistantreferee) in a senior club match. The current GLRU president, Kevin de Klerk, was a stalwart in the Diggers team in its days of glory and known as a fair player who was however not prepared to turn the other cheek. Unseen by the referee, he retaliated when he was hit by an opponent.

by Bosman to call an early end. “Piet Bosman, you scoundrel!” he exclaimed in dismay as the players en ref left the field. flag to draw the referee’s attention to De Klerk’s transgression. The referee awarded a penalty against De Klerk and Diggers’ opponents kicked for the posts. Pappas ran around and took up his position underneath the crossbar when a heavy hand fell on his shoulder. He looked around and into the threatening face of the much bigger De Klerk. “You’re next,” came the frosty warning.

Pappas’ eagle eye picked it up. He held out his Sometimes a referee’s keen anticipation even outwits the wiliest of offenders. Erstwhile test referee Piet Robbertse recalled an incident in a match when he noticed that one of the flankers had no interest in the line-out he was part of, but focussed his attention on one of the opposition centres. The experienced Robbertse realised he had to keep an eye on this flanker. Any referee’s nightmare is the second “referee” on the field, the one without a whistle but continuously calling the decisions or questioning those of the referee. The legendary All Black captain, Sean Fitzpatrick, his Wallaby counterpart, George Gregan and the former Blue Bulls captain Thys Lourens are examples of these ‘player referees’. However, once in a while a referee gets the opportunity to put one of these firmly in his place.

The player in question’s team won the line-out but he disregarded it, tore away, headed for the opposing centre and flattened him with the ball nowhere near. Robbertse was on the spot to award a penalty against the culprit. “But Mr Ref,” the flanker protested, “what are you doing here. Look where the ball is going!”

referees – often novices – are probably more exposed to this phenomenon that at any other level, it happened that a certain skipper excelled in taking advantage of the junior referees’ lack of understanding of the front-row tussle. “But sir, he is a loose-head, it is impossible for him to push upwards,” the captain protested indignantly when his No.1 was penalised for just such an infringement. Whereupon the referee coldly informed the captain that loose-head prop was the position that he (the referee) had played at senior level!

In its long history the seventime Pirates Grand Challenge winner GermistonSimmer was twice sent to its knees by a punch on the chin from professional rugby. It recovered grandly from the first knockdown, and it is planning to do so from the second as well. It is almost twenty years since the club last played in the top league and quite understandably its first aim is to establish itself as the top club in the Senior Grand Challenge Competition.

Germiston-Simmer started out as two separate clubs, Germiston and Simmer & Jack, the latter one of the many prominent 28 www.thebulls.co.za

mine clubs in the early days of the Transvaal Rugby Football Union.

Initially Germiston was the dominant of the two clubs and won the Pirates League in 1907 and 1910. Simmer & Jack won the ‘Survivor Cup’ in 1919 when competitive rugby was resumed after World War I. Simmer went on to win the senior competition in 1921, 1922 and 1931.

To prove that they can compete with the best in the country they beat Ikeys 14-8 in 1921 and drew with Maties 6-6 in 1923. Simmer & Jack lost the final of the Pirates Cup by one point in 1961. The first knock-down came the next year when rugby league stripped especially Rand clubs of their top players in an attempt to gain a foothold in South Africa. Simmer & Jack lost some twenty of their top players to league and Germiston nine. This impacted severely on both clubs and the amalgamation of the two clubs in 1963 came in an effort to become a force to be reckoned with again. It was not an immediate success and Germiston-Simmer lost 13 consecutive matches and finished second last in the league. However, the club came second in the Pirates League in 1967, 1968 and 1969. In 1978 and 1979 Germiston-Simmer won the Pirates League, the pinnacle in the history of the club that has not been repeated since. During this time the club attracted in excess of 6 000 spectators and supporters to the club games at the then home ground, Driehoek. Then the club lost its Pirates status and was relegated to the President League. In 1990 a number of the “elder members” of the club became actively involved to recover the lost status of this once proud and respected club. The reward was reaped in 1992 when Germiston-Simmer, under the coaching of Gert Schutte, obtained the distinctive achievement of winning all 14 of their league matches convincingly and clinched the President’s League. The average score margin of 47-10 illustrates their sheer dominance and they regained their Pirates League status. The second knock-down came when rugby union turned professional in the 1990s. The

smaller clubs could not obtain adequate sponsorships. Many Simmer players moved to Jeppe Old Boys who paid their players. The club lost its Pirates status in 1996 and has not regained it yet. The club’s current chairman, Rene Audier, says due to a lack of funds the smaller clubs struggle to keep promising players. It is difficult to negotiate sponsorships without which players cannot be remunerated. Audier says the club first has to establish itself as a force in the Senior Grand Challenge Competition. “Since 2013 our short term objective has been to have at least one team in the semi-finals, building up the juniors (u20) to become a strength and to establish the junior club (school children) as a breeding ground for the senior club. “In the longer term we want to become the top club in the league by increasing the number of players, establishing the Under 20s and junior club as sustainable feeder sources for the senior club, and increasingly to involve the community with the club. “We would also like to help the surrounding schools to promote rugby,” Audier says. The club is already community driven and Audier says 90% of the players are from the Germiston area. They are negotiating with the municipality to help with the establishment of a rugby clinics day. Of the older stalwarts still active with the club are the president, Johan Delport, and Piet Conchar, an ardent supporter and former Transvaal player. Additionally, over the years Germiston, Simmer & Jack and eventually Germiston-Simmer produced a number of outstanding players, with 86 representing Transvaal and the Golden Lions. www.lionsrugby.co.za 29
