PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome back to Emirates Airline Park! I, alongside equity partner Altmann Allers and the Golden Lions Rugby Union Exco together with Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli wish to extend a warm welcome to Blue Bulls Company Chairman John Newbury and Chief Executive Officer Barend van Graan, their management staff and players to our stadium today. We also welcome Emirates Lions head coach Johan Ackermann, captain Warren Whiteley and the Emirates Lions team and management. My sincerest congratulations must go out to our coaching staff, medical staff and team on achieving the historical milestone of winning three out of four games on their Vodacom Super Rugby tour of Australasia. Upon the team’s departure from Johannesburg, we urged them to show everyone that they have come of age as a group. I am proud to say that the Emirates Lions have shown that in every possible way. While the team has come of age, the true strength lies in their ability to keep their feet on the ground as we know there is still a long way to go and more hard work to be done. We hope that they will once again do us proud here at Emirates Airline Park in the upcoming weeks. Welcome to our most trusted and valued supporters, and thank you for your support. We trust that you enjoy every moment of the action on the field! Please help us to keep the Emirates Lions profile where it belongs and help us to stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White! Lastly but certainly not least, thank you to our sponsors without whom none of this would be possible: Emirates, Xerox, 947, Canterbury, Huawei, Jonsson, Sun International, USN, Tsogo Sun and Vox. ENJOY THE GAME! Kevin de Klerk GLRU PRESIDENT

FanUp and don’t text and drive Sending selfies from Vodacom SupeRugby matches is cool but texting while driving could get you time in the sin bin. Vodacom is encouraging South Africans not to use their mobile devices while driving, through their W8_2send (wait to send) campaign. Texting while driving is a dangerous habit that does not only endanger the lives of drivers and their passengers but also that of other road users. Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting. When travelling at 60km/h, that’s enough to cover the length of a rugby field. Leave the rugby banter with your mates until you get home – don’t text and drive. According to Arrive Alive, studies have suggested that texting while driving is riskier than driving under the influence of alcohol. We would therefore like to call on Vodacom SupeRugby supporters to FanUp and take the pledge to not use their phones while driving. Supporters should go to vodacom.co.za/w8_2send where they get to play the online game that simulates what can happen when drivers have their eyes on their phones instead of on the road. At the end of the game users are encouraged to make the pledge public on Facebook or Twitter that they will “wait to send”, acknowledging that it is dangerous to use their phones while driving. Fans will find other sobering statistics on the website as well as useful tips on how to avoid the dangers of texting and driving and link to Apps that will enable them to keep the promise. FanUp with South Africa’s best mobile network and go to www.w82send.co.za to make the pledge to avoid texting and driving! Bronson Tebogo Mokabela Executive Head: Sponsorship & Regional Marketing

By: Tarryn Steenekamp Having come off the high of grinding out their most successful tour in the side’s Vodacom Super Rugby history, the Emirates Lions have been quick to refocus and revisit their process-driven goals this week. None more so than Emirates Lions captain 10 www.thebulls.co.za
Warren Whiteley who has once again been tasked with leading his troops into battle for Saturday’s clash against the Vodacom Bulls. While three wins from four on tour is a special accomplishment, Whiteley is keen to focus on the tasks which lie ahead. “We have gained great confidence in our
ability to win on tour but now we would like to improve on our performances at home,” explains Whiteley. “It is important for us to stay focused on each game and not become over-confident and forget our goals. This competition is not won within a few weeks.” Whiteley knows the Vodacom Bulls will come out firing on Saturday and is wary of their malleable approach to play. “The Bulls have played some fantastic rugby this season,” says Whiteley. “They have their usual strengths of set piece and physical dominance but have also adopted more of an attacking mind-set recently and we need to be able to counter both.” Whiteley believes the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament is unique in that it provides new challenges each week and speaks of his appreciation of the competition. “I personally enjoy the tournament because there are no easy games in Super Rugby and I believe that this year, more than ever, the teams are very closely contested,” he explains. “I also enjoy being part of this team, the brotherhood and camaraderie along with the
11 www.lionsrugby.co.za
challenge of playing against the best players in the world each week.” While it is back to business at Emirates Airline Park this week, Whiteley is grateful for the opportunity the team had to bond while on tour and shares some of his favourite highlights of the past month. “We had an amazing time away together as a group and I especially enjoyed our time at the Gold Coast of Australia. We also had some very funny moments,” Whiteley laughs. “I will never forget some of the laughs we had with Robbie Coetzee being pranked and Faf (de Klerk) having to wear a ninja turtle costume. He has now adopted the name ‘Fafelangelo’ from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!” Aside from the fun, Whiteley knows that without the backing of valued sponsors and supporters, the team would not be able to reach new heights and achieve their successes of late. “Without our supporters and sponsors we would not be able to reach our true potential,” he says. “On behalf of the team I would like to thank our supporters and both our new and established sponsors for their belief and loyalty throughout the competition. We are so grateful to have you as part of our family.”

Crossing the Jukskei
By: Piet Ebersohn Considering the fierceness characterising rugby clashes between the Lions and the Bulls ever since the days of their predecessors Transvaal and Northern Transvaal, one can hardly believe that they once were one close-knit family. However, there still remains a strong bond between them and over the years they have provided many, many players to one another. The oldest rugby clubs in the Transvaal came into being in 1888. The pioneering clubs were Wanderers and Diggers on the newly opened gold fields of Johannesburg, Potchefstroom and Pretoria Rugby Club in the capital of the then Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. Harlequins (established in 1902), Transvaal University College (1908) and Pretoria Police (1921) also all played in the Transvaal First League. When the Pirates Grand Challenge Competition began in 1889 the Pretoria club won it that year. They won it on eight more occasions (once sharing with ERPM). Pretoria Police won it four times and Harlequins thrice. Police dominated and won the Cup in 1932, 1934, 1935 and 1936 after being promoted to the First League in 1926. In fact, from 1922-36 clubs from Pretoria won 12 of the 15 Pirates Grand Challenge competitions. Because of the strong club system and other rugby political reasons, the Pretoria sub-union became
Northern Transvaal in 1938 – and the Trans-Jukskei derby became one of the most competitively fought events in South African provincial rugby. From the outset in the 1890s, the future Bulls contributed strongly to the representative Transvaal teams. Loftus Versfeld, Piet Korsten, W Tindal, Doelie Morkel, Nic Vlok and D Burger of Pretoria played for the Country Districts team against the touring British team in1891, and Morkel and Korsten also represented the Transvaal provincial team in the 9-0 loss against the tourists. In 1896, Ben Duff, Japie Louw and D Kruger played for the Transvaal Country Districts against the British and were joined by A Maartens in the full provincial side for the first match against the tourists. When Transvaal first won the Currie Cup in 1922 they could depend on the services of Theuns Kruger, Niek Bosman, Stegmann van Niekerk, Cyril Louw (Pretoria), Thys Zeeman (Tuks), Joey Simpson and AF Fielding (Harlequins). SA Townsend (Harlequins, 1909), Bunny Reid (Harlequins, 1910), Theuns Kruger (Pretoria, 1922-1924), Jack van Druten (Harlequins,1926), Arthur Mortimer (Harlequins, mid 1920s), Joe Nykamp (Pretoria, 19291931), GW Kotzé (Harlequins, 1930), CA Gill (Harlequins (1930), Lucas Strachan (Pretoria Police,1931-1935) and Niek Bierman (Pretoria, 1937) captained Transvaal from up North. A fair number of Transvaal’s Springboks before 1938 were produced north of the Jukskei. In fact, from 1924 to 1937 of Transvaal’s 22 new Springboks, 15
came from the Pretoria clubs. In 1932 the first Junior Springboks to Argentina included Transvaal’s representatives Joe Nykamp (captain) from Pretoria, Ivor Townsend from
Harlequins and LB Gillett from Pietersburg. After the formation of Northern Transvaal in 1938 their first match was played at Ellis Park against the former mother body. Transvaal won 22-9.
Transvaal/Lions boosting the Bulls But while it seemed one-way traffic from Pretoria to the Transvaal team in days when there were no other provincial teams north of the Vaal River, things changed after Northern Transvaal became an independent union in 1938. The Light Blues over the years benefitted greatly from the move of Transvaal players to Pretoria. Flyhalf Alan Menter became a Bok in his first season in Pretoria, James Dalton captained the Super Rugby Bulls, Adriaan Richter was another Northern Transvaal captain, and Springbok captain Felix du Plessis, Transvaal captain Wahl Bartmann, the Springbok flyhalf/centre Michael du Plessis and Wikus van Heerden also crossed the Jukskei to the North. Van Heerden captained the Cats, the Lions and the Bulls – the only player to lead three 13 www.thebulls.co.za
Super Rugby teams. His dad Moaner also played for Northern Transvaal and Transvaal. Deon Coetzee, the first player to represent Transvaal at all age group levels as well as the senior team, is another who exchanged Johannesburg for Pretoria and the Blue Bulls, as did (then Springbok) international cricketer Lee Barnard and later Springbok coach Harry Viljoen. Many club players also played for clubs on both sides of the Jukskei. In fact, Syd Newman who played for Wits and Transvaal in 1939, played for Quins during Varsity breaks – and was selected by both Transvaal and Northern Transvaal for a match between the two neighbours! After discussion, he ran out for Transvaal in the derby that day. www.thebulls.co.za 13

League season to start; some clubs already in full swing By: Piet Ebersohn
the Cup competition.
The Pirates Grand Challenge competition and other Golden Lions leagues kick off next weekend. Some of the leading clubs already have a hectic schedule behind them, competing – and doing well – in the Varsity Cup and Shield, the Community Cup and the Assupol competitions.
The Golden Lions Rugby Union was one of the few Unions with two clubs in the Community Cup series. Wanderers was scheduled to meet Despatch (Eastern Province) in the quarterfinals at Rustenburg on Thursday 2 April. Raiders also did themselves and the Union proud in the competition.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) was running strong in the Varsity Cup but lost their penultimate match, while the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) proved in no uncertain terms in the Varsity Shield that they really are in a different league and should still have been in
Roodepoort II and UJ U/20 won their pool finals in the Assupol series in which clubs from the Northern unions competed.

• The saying ‘in a class of their own’ was seldom more aptly illustrated than by Wits’ dominance

in the competition for the Varsity Shield. Relegated from the Cup series last year, the Witsies completely outplayed their opponents over a double round and earned a bonus point for tries in seven of their eight matches. They won six and drew two. They play the UKZN Impis in the final at Wits on Monday. • Wanderers, who qualified for the Community Cup series by knocking out Sasol (Pumas) 35-20 in the provincial runners-up play-offs, did well to beat Evergreens into third spot in Pool C. They earned five bonus points in the competition to nothing by the SWD team, which made the difference on the log. It is Wanderers’ first attempt to lift the Gold Cup. Raiders, who won the Pirates Grand Challenge

last year, played in an extremely tough pool. They won two out of four matches to finish third in Pool B which was topped by the formidable Pretoria Police and College Rovers, both previous National Club Champions in the now defunct competition. • Randfontein, Roodepoort and UJ contested the Assupol series against clubs from the Blue Bulls, Leopards, Valke and Pumas. With UJ’s top teams involved in the Varsity Cup and Young Guns competitions they did well to reach three of the finals, beating Tukkies 27-24 in the U/20 competition. Roodepoort II beat UJ II 39-12 and Tukkies U.21 beat their UJ counterparts 31-3.
