PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
WELCOME TO EMIRATES AIRLINE PARK We kick off the 2015 Vodacom Super Rugby series with our first game against the Hurricanes. I, with equity partner Altman Allers and the Exco together with Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli wish to welcome the management and coaching staff and players of the Hurricanes to our hallowed ground. We also welcome and congratulate Johan Ackermann, the newly elected SA Rugby Coach of the Year, of whom we are tremendously proud, together with Emirates Lions captain Warren Whiteley and our team. Coming off the back of our best season in Vodacom Super Rugby and, with the immense amount of preseason training that has been done so far, we are confident that Warren and our team will produce the thrilling brand of rugby we all celebrated throughout the 2014 season. There is an air of excitement and anticipation at the start of this Vodacom Super Rugby, which rates as the premium rugby competition in world rugby. Good luck to both teams and I trust that the Hurricanes’ visit to Johannesburg will be an enjoyable one. I would like to also welcome you, our most valued supporters, and thank you for your always gracious support. Please help us to keep the Emirates Lions profile where it belongs and help stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White. Lastly but certainly not least, thank you to our sponsors without whom none of this would be possible: Emirates, Xerox, 947, Canterbury, Huawei, Jonsson, Sun International, USN, Tsogo Sun and Vox. ENJOY THE GAME! Kevin de Klerk GLRU PRESIDENT

MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM TITLE SPONSOR
EMIRATES – PROUD TO BE ON BOARD As the new Title Sponsor of the Emirates Lions, we are immensely excited about the Super Rugby season ahead. The kick off in today’s match marks the start of a fiveyear partnership between Emirates and the Lions. Emirates is a strong champion of rugby worldwide and South Africa is one of the top rugby playing nations in the world. We are therefore delighted to have the opportunity to support one of the country’s most popular and established teams. Founded in 1889, the Golden Lions Rugby Union is clearly one of South Africa’s best known sports brands with a rich rugby history. Rugby is a core part of Emirates’ sports sponsorship portfolio. We’ve supported rugby around the world for more than 20 years. As a global airline, Emirates, connects people and places, and one of the ways in which we connect with our customers and their passions, is through our sponsorship and support of sports teams and events. It’s the first major sponsorship by Emirates of a South African team, and this will certainly raise the visibility of the Emirates brand not just here, but also in our key markets of New Zealand and Australia where the Super Rugby competition is played, and a number of other markets in which the games are televised. Emirates first started operations to South Africa 20 years ago, the same year in which South Africa won the Rugby World Cup at this very stadium. Today we enable trade and provide connections for South Africans from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg to Dubai and beyond to our network of more than 140 destinations around the world. We wish the Emirates Lions every success in the season ahead and we know that as passionate fans and supporters, you will be with them every step of the way. Enjoy the game. Dynamic, physical, committed. These are just a few words to describe the powerhouse that is Emirates Lions loose-forward Jaco Kriel.
gained a lot but I would really like to improve on the fetcher role as a flanker this year. However, I believe it is important to focus on the team processes and goals and just continue to look forward.
The stand-out 25-year-old celebrated an incredible 2014 season and became the talk of the town with his consistently gutsy performances and his outstanding work-rate in particular.
“We as a team obviously want to better last season’s results both in the Super Rugby and Currie Cup tournaments but, more importantly, we want to be a competitive outfit throughout the competitions and remain consistent.”
Kriel is quick to shy away from personal praise, however, and rather shares his sentiments on his hunger for further improvement and looks at the job at hand this season.
Kriel believes the improved structures and the retention of talent in the core senior group will assist the Emirates Lions in reaching these goals.
By: Tarryn Steenekamp
“All that I achieved in 2014 is something of the past for me now. I really want to be the best I can be in 2015 and create some new memories,” says Kriel.
“As a group we’ve all been together now for longer than a year and knowing each other’s playing styles is definitely a benefit from keeping your core group of players for as many seasons possible,” he says.
“I think experience is valuable and last season I
“It is special for us to be able to grow as a unit

and become stronger each season.” According to Kriel, the Emirates Lions had an excellent pre-season and will be fully prepared for whatever the Hurricanes throw at them during the opening round of the 2015 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament. “Pre-season went really well and every player worked exceptionally hard,” he explains. “With coach Ackies there are absolutely no favourites and he will always choose the player who puts in the most work. We all knew what was at stake and we fought hard to earn selection but that is not unique – it happens in every Super Rugby squad and every team we face will offer a challenge. “Each team would love to start off their season with a ‘W’ and the Hurricanes are a class outfit with so much experience through their All Black charges. As a result, the game will offer us a special opportunity to measure ourselves against some of the best players in the world and we are up for that challenge!” Having secured the sponsorship of some of the world’s most successful international brands this season – including title sponsor Emirates and associate sponsor Huawei – as well as retaining the support of a handful of local sponsors, Kriel believes the Emirates Lions have a responsibility to perform to the best of their abilities. “We played without any title sponsor in Super Rugby last year and it makes you feel a little bit insecure as a player,” says Kriel. “Having all of these amazing sponsors on board who have literally filled our jersey is just a wonderful feeling. The team now just have to do the job on the field and the rest is looked after which puts us at ease. We really want to do our sponsors proud to thank them for their support!” With 2015 a Rugby World Cup year, it is no secret that South Africa’s elite players will be looking to put in extra work to secure a
coveted position in the Springbok squad for the tournament. Kriel, who earned selection for the Springbok touring squad at the end of 2014 but who has not yet been capped, knows the level of commitment required for a World Cup opportunity is immense. “On tour with the Springboks last year it was great to see how things work on an international level and being there just doubled my hunger to don the Green and Gold,” Kriel shares. “Obviously one of my personal goals is to play as much as I can in the season and give myself the best possible chance to play in the World Cup but I know this will take a massive effort. “The Rugby World Cup aside, playing for the Lions is such an honour for me and that is where my main focus will lie this season.” Kriel acknowledges Emirates Lions head coach Johan Ackermann, who was recently named as the SA Rugby Coach of the Year, for not only this honour to play for the Pride of Johannesburg but also for his opportunity with the Springboks. “Coach Ackies is just a brilliant coach and he really has been a mentor for me at the Lions,” explains Kriel. “He is always encouraging me just to keep on working hard and he commands the respect of every single player in the squad. He truly is a role-model to us all.”

World Cup s 12 www.lionsrugby.co.za
By: Wim van der Berg It’s a World Cup year, which shifts the focus slightly to things regarded by many as more important that the Vodacom Super Rugby competition. The reality is, however, that this competition is probably more important than in non-World Cup years for many players in the three Sanzar countries. The ambitions of Super Rugby players to make it to the 2015 World Cup will in itself ensure a fierce competition. This is just as it was in the years before professionalism moved the focus to the World Cup when touring teams visited South Africa and the Springboks played overseas. Who can forget the excitement of the announcement of those invited to the national trials where 90 players or so battled it out, with the whole South Africa awaiting the sides for the final trial between the Probables and Possibles? From those 30 would come the Springbok side…and many ears were held close to the radio for the announcement of the selected 15 players (later with the ever-increasing number of substitutes added). There was the excitement of the Test series, of course, and also of the provincial sides who all got their chance against the tourists on a tour of more than 25 matches. A tour was a matter of importance. Remember, there were usually no Tests in South Africa the year before, or perhaps even for two or three years before that.
There was also the fun the Springbok tourists had in touring overseas and playing in midweek games against teams such as Auckland, New South Wales, London Counties, French provincial selections (combined teams), each of them hoping to upset the Bok applecart and each a challenge in its own right. Golden Lions Rugby Union’s CEO Rudolf Straeuli will remember fondly his tour with the Springboks to the UK in 1994 where he had the honour of leading the non-Test Boks. The legendary Transvaal captain Toy Dannhauser’s 1968 team will be remembered for beating the touring British Lions at the old Ellis Park – and this famous team was therefore forgiven for not winning the Currie Cup! There was the excitement when the Quaggas came close to registering the only win against the touring 1974 British Lions of Willie John McBride at Ellis Park. It was the match that ended the budding career of Peter Kirsten, then 19, when he sustained a serious knee injury. He turned to cricket, where he became a legend which he so easily could have been in rugby. International rugby was important, so much so that Currie Cup competitions were, until 1968, rarely played in years when sides toured South Africa or the Springboks went overseas. It was all about the Tests, which were rare. This is underlined by the fact that Jan Ellis (1965-76) and Frik du Preez ( 1961-71) both played Test rugby for nearly 11 years and shared the modest South African record of 38 Tests for more than 20 years until they were surpassed by Mark Andrews and James Small in the late 1990s.

QUICK FIRE Malcolm Marx By: Tarryn Steenekamp Hooker Malcolm Marx is one of the fresh faces of senior rugby at the Golden Lions Rugby Union. The 20-year-old has had a glittering career to date, having made his Vodacom Super Rugby and Absa Currie Cup debuts in 2014. He also earned the opportunity to represent the SA U20 side at the World Rugby Junior World Championship in the same year. He will start against the Hurricanes in round one of the 2015 Vodacom Super Rugby competition so what better time to get to know a bit more about him as a person – both on and off the field? Why did you choose to play rugby as a career? I chose rugby as a career because I can honestly say that from the first time I ever played I completely fell in love with the game and have never looked back! What has been your greaTest rugby highlight so far? I don’t really know because I have had so many highlights but I think playing for the SA U20 side last year was a special
24 www.lionsrugby.co.za
achievement. It was wonderful to represent my country. It is also a big privilege for me to play for the Emirates Lions. What has been your biggest rugby disappointment/lowlight so far? I think getting injured just two days before playing the New Zealand U20 side while at the Junior World Championship and being sent home as a result. That was a tough but I grew as a player from the experience. Which three words best describe your personality? Honest, loyal and committed What is your favourite holiday destination? I really enjoy going to any sea-side destination. What is your greaTest rugby ambition? To play the game at the highest level and to perform at that level consistently. Who do you look to for inspiration? My mom. Which has been your favourite rugby ground to play at? Emirates Airline Park What is your favourite meal? Pizza. Who has been your rugby role-model and why? Bismarck du Plessis as he has been the best in the world for quite some time. What is your favourite song on your iPod/phone playlist at the moment? I don’t really have just one favourite song but I enjoy good music – mostly deep house.
Who are your best friends at the Lions and why? I am friends with everyone but Cyle Brink and Dylan Smith are two of my best friends as I went to school with them at King Edward School (KES) and we have gone through the Lions ranks together. What do you do in your spare time away from rugby? I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.
What are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Hopefully I will get to spend a bit of time with my girlfriend and recover from our tough encounter against the Hurricanes.

CLUB RUGBY By: Wim van der Berg The ever-increasing focus on club rugby was taken a step further with the additional playoffs to determine the final five teams for this year’s Community Cup competition. The qualifiers will join the 15 winners of the various unions’ 2014 club competitions in this series. Joining the Pirates Grand Challenge’s top open club Raiders in the national competition will be Wanderers who went through a series of qualification games, thereby ensuring two sides from the GLRU in the competition. Both the GLRU qualifiers started their preparations for the national tournament last year and have played the customary warm-ups since January. Raiders are in a tough Pool B group with Pretoria Police (Blue Bulls), Bloemfontein Crusaders (Free State), Noordelikes (Blue Bulls Limpopo) and College Rovers (KZN). They start their challenge in Bloemfontein against Crusaders on February 21. Raiders’ other fixtures are: February 28: Bye March 7: vs Noordelikes in Polokwane March 14: vs Pretoria Police at Bill Jardine Stadium March 21: vs College Rovers at Bill Jardine Stadium

Wanderers (Pool C) are drawn with Hamiltons (WP), Villagers Worcester (Boland), Sishen (Griquas), Evergreens (SWD). They kick off against South Africa’s oldest club Hamiltons, a semi-final loser last year, in Cape Town on February 28 following a bye on February 21. Then they are up against: March 7: vs Evergreens in Pacaltsdorp
March 14: Villagers Worcester at Kent Park March 21: vs Sishen at Kent Park Of course, a third competitor from recent Lions club competitions are the defending champions Rustenburg Impala from the Leopards, who are hosts to the top eight teams for the play-offs over the Easter Weekend.
OTHER COMPETITIONS ** Other competitions featuring teams from the Golden Lions are of course the Varsity Cup and Shield series where UJ and Wits are respectively involved and the Assupol series where 26 clubs from six unions – the Lions, Leopards, Blue Bulls, Valke, Pumas and Limpopo Blue Bulls – take part in 14 sections, including at age group level. No less than 192 matches will be conTested by the more than 3000 players involved in this competition that starts on February 14. The Lions’ representatives are Randfontein, Roodepoort and UJ. The students are of also involved with the Varsity Cup competition in the same period. Of course, the main GLRU competition remains the Pirates Grand Challenge which starts on April 10. Good news is that the NWUPukke are back in this competition to further bolster a very strong league with the other nine sides being Alberton, UJ, Pirates, Raiders, Randfontein, Roodepoort, Union, Wanderers and Wits.
