PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to Emirates Airline Park this afternoon A special word of welcome to the President of the Sharks Graham McKenzie John Smit the Chief Executive Officer, their management, coaching staff and players. And also to our Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli and Equity Partner Altmann Ahlers as well as our Currie Cup title sponsors Xerox and their staff. We all join in applauding our team for their great performances to date securing us a top of the table spot with four games to go. A big word of thanks to Johan Ackermann, Swys de Bruin and the rest of our coaching and medical staff and of course our team that are moving us forward to one of the best seasons in Lions Rugby post 1995. Encounters between the Sharks and Lions have always been a wonderful experience and a true spectacle of an attractive brand of running rugby. We trust that the match this afternoon will be no different. Good luck to both teams and we trust that this will be an injury free and enjoyable game for all concerned. Good luck to the appointed referees, your officiating and contributions remains one of the most important parts of the game. Allow me a heartfelt word of thanks and appreciation to all our sponsors. Sponsorships are an essential element of professional sport and the beautiful game of rugby, which we all love so much, would not be able to flourish without loyal sponsors. Full details of the Lions sponsors appear on our website. Most importantly welcome and thank you to our dear supporters - know that your ongoing support is vital for us as a team and organization. Please keep up the support that our team always needs. Kevin de Klerk President: Golden Lions Rugby Union

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF BYTES DOCUMENT SOLUTIONS It is my great pleasure to welcome you here today to be part of the successes of a winning team - the Xerox Golden Lions. It has been a fantastic season for the team so far as they lead the ABSA Currie Cup Premier Division Log by four points. Not only do the Xerox Golden Lions head the log on points (29 from 6 matches) but they also have a handsome +30 points advantage over the 2nd placed Blue Bulls which will be vital when it comes to the playoffs. Against the EP Kings two weeks ago at Emirates Airline Park, the Xerox Golden Lions soon ran up a comfortable lead after they were awarded a penalty try inside five minutes. Jaco van der Walt had the kicking duties and was in exceptional form adding the extras. Nothing could stop the Xerox Golden Lions as Kwagga Smith and Stokkies Hanekom added tries inside the first 15 minutes for a 19 -0 lead. The final try from Ruan Combrinck in the 83rd minute converted by Boshoff sealed a 37 – 21 victory. Then last week it was across the Jukskei to face the Blue Bulls at Fortress Loftus and it didn’t go too well for the Bulls in the first half as the Xerox Golden Lions ran up a 30-7 lead. It turned out to be a game of two halves and the best match of the season so far as the Xerox Golden Lions won 36-28. What a game! What a fantastic result for the Xerox Golden Lions away from home! To all the fans who have taken the time to attend the games and to support the team, we salute you and thank you, and as the captain Jaco Kriel said after last week’s match, “you are simply fantastic”. So let’s hear your roar with pride this afternoon and let’s do all we can to protect our den. Johan Basson CEO of Bytes Document Solutions

friends and teammates ever since.
They say props should be square, built like, well, like bricks basically.
He represented the Golden Lions at Craven Week in 2011 and 2012 and a year later represented the union at Under 19 level.
They say the more muscle the better, the tougher the better, the stronger the better, the more intimidating the better. And while 21-year-old Dylan Smith might not look very scary with his boyish looks, there must be a very good reason why Xerox Lions Currie Cup coach Johan Ackermann invited the youngster to train with his charges for a while now. His coach at Under-21 level Russel Winter, has no doubt that Smith will become a Springbok. “Without a doubt Dylan will be a Springbok one day. He is intelligent, committed and he does what is asked of him. He has all the abilities needed to play at the top,” says Winter. Smith is one of the young up-and-coming players in the Lions set-up who finally gets his opportunity to make his debut for the senior side this weekend against the Sharks. He almost sighs out loud when asked about the opportunity to train with the seniors. “I am so keen and gearing to go. I feel like it is has been a long time coming and now I can’t wait for it to happen.” But relative to other rugby players in South Africa Dylan Thomas Smith only started playing the game with the oval ball late in life while growing up in Durban and attending Hurlyvale Primary where he had his first taste of rugby at the age of 13. While he started his rugby playing days at flank he quickly moved to the front row the following year. His parents then moved to Johannesburg where he was enrolled at King Edward School. He quickly caught the eye of coach Carl Spilhaus, someone who played a big role in his life as his first team coach. It is here at KES that the combination of the Three Musketeers, Malcolm Marx, Smith and Kyle Brink was formed. The threesome have been 11 www.lionsrugby.co.za
Winter is another person that has had a big impact on Smith as a player. “He backs me and believes in me. That makes the world of difference to a player.” Captaining a side seems to come naturally to Smith. He captained his schools’ first side, and earlier in the year was also captain in the Vodacom Cup against the Limpopo Blue Bulls while he currently leads the Under 21’s on the field every weekend. When Smith is not busy with rugby, he likes to chill with his mates. “I still have contact with my friends from school and the best way to relax is to chill with them. We all live in the same area and get together as often as we can.” Asked what front rankers he looks up to, he goes back a few years to the days when Os du Randt ruled the scrums every weekend while he also looks up to Springbok Beast Mtwarira. Internationally he is a big fan of the Irish front ranker Cian Healy. Sticking with the Irish he also favours them as the dark horse of the World Cup while backing his favourite side, the Springboks. Wearing the Green and Gold one day is the ultimate goal, but a more realistic one is to represent the Lions in the Super Rugby next year. Smith just gives a chuckle when asked about studies. “Let’s just say I’m concentrating on my rugby career at the moment.” He hopes to start his own business one day after rugby, but for now he is focused on winning the Under 21 league while at the same holding thumbs that he gets to debut in the Currie Cup. Should he make his debut this year, he will be the fifth Under-21 player to do so, joining Malcolm Marx, Jaco van der Walt, Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Jano Venter.

Remarkable border
links for today’s teams By: Piet Ebersohn Transvaal and Natal, forerunners of today’s Golden Lions and Natal Sharks, met on the rugby field for the first time in 1892, a match won very convincingly 23-0 by Transvaal. Apart from numerous thrilling encounters between the two adversaries since that first match, there is a remarkable link especially between the current Golden Lions leadership team and the Durban-based visitors, and also in some other cases of cross-border pollination. • Kevin de Klerk, the President of the Golden Lions, not only captained Transvaal, he also led Natal back in 1979. De Klerk, a not-tobe-messed with lock, played 107 games for Transvaal and scored 27 tries. • Rudolf Straeuli, the Chief Executive Officer of the Golden Lions who also represented the union as a player, became head coach of the Sharks in 2000 before he took up the position of Springbok coach in 2002. He rejoined the Sharks as Rugby Commercial Manager in 2005 and in 2013 moved back to the GLRU as General Manager Rugby and Commercial. He became GLRU CEO on June 1, 2014.
• Johan Ackermann, the Lions and Golden Lions head coach, like De Klerk a no-nonsense lock in his playing days, played 27 matches for the Sharks from 2004-2008 and 12 for the Natal Sharks from 2006-2007. He previously spent three seasons with the Cats and Golden Lions. When he played his last match for the Sharks, defeating the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in 2008, Ackermann became the then oldest player ever in Super Rugby history at age 37 years, 272 days. With the help of assistant-coach Swys de Bruin, with Durban links himself, Ackermann completely turned around the Golden Lions’ fortunes from relegation in 2012 to a Currie Cup final in 2014 – thumping the Natal Sharks 50-20 in the semi-final at Ellis Park. • Swys de Bruyn started his provincial coaching career in Durban at the Natal Sharks Academy. He was the head coach of the Sharks U21 side in 1996 and 1997 and took charge of the Natal Wildebeest in the 1998 Vodacom Cup, guiding the team to the semi-finals • In 2004 he returned to the Academy for another eight years as the head and skills coach, helping out at Vodacom Cup, U21 and U19 level.
• Last but not least, the Golden Lions captain, Warren Whitely, was born in Durban, matriculated at Glenwood High School and played for the Natal Sharks in 2008-2009. Over the years there were also some other notable cross-border links. • Legendary Transvaal captain Toy Dannhauser, yet another uncompromising lock-forward like De Klerk, played his last two seasons of rugby for Natal in 1970 and 1971. • In 1986 fullback Liaan Kirkham kicked 14 points for Transvaal in their 18-4 win over Natal in a Currie Cup semi-final at King’s Park in Durban. Two years later Kirkham came into the Natal team for a Lion Cup quarter-final as a late pre-match replacement for Hugh ReeceEdwards, and contributed a penalty goal to Natal’s 17-13 knocking out of the Red and White.
• One of Natal’s prime acquisitions from Johannesburg was the tireless Springbok flanker Wahl Bartmann, whose father, Piet, and two brothers, Leon and Francois, also played for Transvaal. • Bartmann led Natal to a 14-13 victory at Ellis Park over a star-studded Transvaal outfit captained by future Springbok leader Francois Pienaar in the Currie Cup Final of 1992. • In 1999 the Golden Lions Springbok wing Thinus Delport put on a brilliant performance and scored two tries to help his team beat the Natal Sharks 32-9 . Three years later he also crossed the Drakensberg to join the Sharks and Natal Sharks. This is by no means an effort to cover all the cross-border links between the two teams and only the most recent years were touched on.

Stingers Ambitious and successful newcomers
By: Piet Ebersohn To win two out of three competitions in its first year of league rugby is an achievement most clubs only dream of. This is, however, what the Midrand-based Tshuma Stingers achieved this year. Their first, second and Under-20 teams reached the final of the President’s League of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) and the latter two won their matches. The club’s owner, Ndumiso Tshuma, says the club was established in 2013. “From humble beginnings, we formalised our activities in 2014 through registering our company Tshuma Stingers Rugby operating as Tshuma Stingers Rugby Club. This year we are celebrating our second anniversary since the start of operations. “In 2015 we affiliated with the GLRU and it was our first official rugby games played when we competed in the Senior Grand Challenge and President’s League.” Tshuma says there was an increase in the number of players since Stingers’ entry into this competition. “Our relationship with the Union and its affiliate members has exposed us to the real world of rugby. We have since improved on our skills on 24 www.lionsrugby.co.za
and off the field. This can only mean that we are slowly but surely building a power house.” It is clear that the club, based at Midrand High School, has overcome some of its initial problems such as few to no players, a lack of financing and no playing fields. Tshuma says the club’s programme runs all year round. “Our season starts in April and finishes in September, followed by off-season training from November to December. We have our preseason training in February and March. We train every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.” Tshuma is proud of the club’s success since affiliation to GLRU. “We field three teams week after week. Our boys bravely and ably competed head-on with teams that have been at it for years already. We are incredibly proud that in our first year we found ourselves competing in the finals of the President’s League against Jabulani; the Under 20s winning 28-0 and the second team 2617. Although our first team lost 15-30 our boys fought for each other on that field like soldiers in battle. We could not be more proud. “This attests to the unrelenting hard work, passion, commitment and can-do attitude of the founders of Tshuma Stingers Rugby and its very capable and generous management team.
“We have a great passion for the sport and we want to see the players being exposed to rugby, being comfortable that it is a sport for them and growing from strength to strength in their knowledge of and performance in the sport. “We believe in ‘on time, on point and responsive administration’ as the backbone of a strong organisation. “Our players put their bodies on the line for this team because we all believe in the vision of a club that is here to stay and will continue to play a leading role in the development of a disciplined, respectful and skilled player corps.” Tshuma says team work is of paramount importance. “At this development stage we have over 50 active players. We believe in each and every one of our players who has put on our jersey and stepped on the field of play. All our players are stars and they shine for one another. “This season we have witnessed amazing brotherhood, players putting their bodies on the line for the man next to them, fighting from the start to the end of matches.” On the short to medium term Tshuma wants the club to continue its growth with more players joining the club. It is his vision to promote rugby at grassroots and youth level from which the club will draw players going forward.
with growth in skills, confidence and knowledge taking a centre stage in the development of rugby from grass roots level to national and international levels.” Tshuma says Stingers is converting the company into a non-profit organisation and inviting sponsorship for much needed essentials such as kit, training material, field lighting and transport for the players – most of whom fight the forces every day just to make it to and from practice and to fulfil other needs. The club is also looking for corporate partners, which can play a leading role in the development of the sport in the community. “We are in a position to align corporate partners’ efforts to ensure that organisations’ marketing objectives are met and their brand awareness is enhanced,” Tshuma says.
Visit the club website at www.tshumastingersrugby.co.za; or contact Tshuma at ndumiso@ tshumastingersrugby.co.za or 078 266 0723 for more information about the club.
“As the saying goes, Rome was not built in one day, but Rome was built because there was an effort. It is our long term vision to play in the Community Cup.” The Stingers Club dreams big. Eventually they want to produce players that can hold their own in the Currie Cup, Super Rugby and even on an international level. “In the long run we see the players that we are developing playing and dominating in the World Cup. Our vision is to see our management team 25 www.lionsrugby.co.za
