PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to Emirates Airline Park I, with equity partner Altmann Allers and the Exco together with Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli wish to extend a hearty welcome to Thelo Wakefield and his Western Province Rugby Union management staff, as well as captain Duane Vermeulen and his DHL Stormers outfit. We also welcome Emirates Lions head coach Johan Ackermann, captain Warren Whiteley and the Emirates Lions team and management. We trust that our side will deliver a capable performance against the DHL Stormers. Ahead of the departure of our team and management on their tour of Australasia, we also wish all parties involved only success on a very tough and lengthy trip which lies ahead. Coming off the back of a much-improved 2014 season, we trust that our team will do us proud while abroad. Welcome to our most trusted and valued supporters, and thank you for your support. As is always the case, this titanic clash between the Emirates Lions and DHL Stormers will surely be a great spectacle to observe for all of us. We trust that you enjoy every moment of the action on the field. Please help us to keep the Emirates Lions profile where it belongs and help us to stamp out all forms of abuse and racism. Remember it’s not black or white but Red and White. By: Tarryn Steenekamp Lock Franco Mostert has developed a name for himself as one of the feistiest and most physical characters in the Emirates Lions squad. The 24-year-old has performed consistently in the locking berth over the past two seasons and, while the Emirates Lions have not had

the smoothest start to their 2015 season, Mostert is hoping that he will be able to contribute to the team improving their performances. “I really believe that we have what it takes to compete as a top team in the tournament and we just need to stay humble, concentrate on the game at hand and believe in our abilities,” shares Mostert. “I want to be able to improve my performances more each game and contribute to us achieving our goals. It is my personal goal to ensure that I start each and every game this season and do my best for the team and for God.

“I also think if we stick together and follow our processes we will be able to achieve anything we set our minds to.” Looking ahead to the match against the DHL Stormers, Mostert shares his great respect for the Cape side but believes that the Emirates Lions have a side which can seriously contest the game.

“The Stormers are an excellent side with some of South

Africa’s top players. I really do respect them as an opposition and think they will definitely come with force and bring a lot of physicality to our game,” Mostert explains. “However, I have full faith that our team has what it takes to compete in all aspects of the game. I think it is going to be a very entertaining game from the spectators’ pointof-view!” Almost immediately after the encounter against the DHL Stormers, the Emirates Lions will depart for their tour of the Antipodes, which will span the full month of March. While the touring squad is yet to be finalised, Mostert intends to play to his full potential against the DHL Stormers in order to secure his tour boarding pass. “I am extremely excited about the tour and will really play my heart out to ensure I get to go across with the team,” he says.
without the support of the fans and he would like to thank them for their consistent backing. “As supporters, you will never truly understand how it feels to run out onto the Emirates Airline Park field in front of a massive crowd,” he shares. “That is a feeling that just cannot be described and a feeling which encourages us through thick and thin. The fact that there are still supporters who constantly encourage us no matter if we lose or win makes us feel exceptionally blessed and honoured. We truly are grateful for your support and I fully believe we have the best supporters in the world!”

“What I look forward to the most about the tour is to build up on the strong brotherhood we already have as a team. Additionally, my hopes for the tour games are that we will perform as well as I know we can and I hope that we will pocket a few wins and come home in good spirit.” Mostert may be physical on the pitch but he also has a softer side and recently got engaged. He is looking forward to his future both on and off the pitch. “I give God the glory for being at this stage of my life and for blessing me with the best partner,” says Mostert. “I wish to always give her the best as she does for me and I am just really excited for our future here together. I am so glad that we both feel as though we are a part of a big family here at the Lions and that is something that makes this Union very special.” Mostert believes the team would be nowhere www.lionsrugby.co.za www.thebulls.co.za 11
It’s easier for the loose-heads By: Piet Ebersohn Precious memories dating back over 126 years are cemented in the foundation of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU), and hundreds of players, many of them reaching legendary status, contributed to create these memories. One such legend is Piet Bosman, a hard-as-nails though highly mobile prop forward who plied his skills during the mid-sixties and early seventies at Ellis Park – the Emirates Airlines Park of today. The GLRU was still called the Transvaal Rugby Football Union then, and the team was known as the “Rooibontes” due to their red and white jerseys. Bosman was not always a prop forward. Before moving to Transvaal he played eleven games for Western Transvaal as a flanker. In the early sixties he and another Transvaal legend, Toy Dannhauser, roomed together at the Pukke. They remain close friends, often sharing memories of their treasured youth. Bosman, a devastating tackler, was often concerned when his target had to get medical attention. This caused him once to hesitate in a tackle, and he dislocated his shoulder. On recovery he could neither regain his old prowess, nor his place in the first team. Eventually he switched to prop and was soon playing senior rugby again. When Transvaal’s veteran Springbok prop Fanie Kühn called it a day, Bosman took over his place on the loose-head side of the Rooibontes scrum. He represented the province 56 times from 1965 to 1973 and captained the team in 1966 and 1967. Bosman helped Transvaal play in three Currie 12 www.lionsrugby.co.za
Cup finals. In 1968 Northern Transvaal beat them 16-3, in 1971 they drew 14-14 with their Northern neighbours, and in 1972 they beat Eastern Transvaal 25-19. The highlight of Bosman’s career was when Transvaal became the only provincial side to beat the visiting British Lions of 1968. The Rooibontes won 14-6 with their forwards giving a magnificent display of power rugby. Transvaal played ten-man rugby at its best, with Springbok scrumhalf Dirk de Vos kicking tactically as only he could do, and fly-half Jannie Barnard, another Bok, breaking back to the forwards whenever he got the ball. Bosman played in the Springbok trials a number of times and once captained the B-team. The closest he came to the coveted Green and Gold was when the All Blacks toured South Africa in 1970. Unfortunately an incident which left an All Black with a black eye got Bosman a black mark in the selectors’ note books. Still in good health at 76, he considers his old club mate at Vereeniging, the Bok Martiens Louw, as the strongest prop he encountered during his long career, even though they only met at practice. Although he played against quite a few international touring teams, he never met a front ranker amongst them as strong as the South African scrummagers of those days. Bosman believes the present rules improved scrummaging and make life a lot easier for the loose-head props. “When I played, the tight-head took you down if you did not take him out yourself. Nowadays the tight-head is penalised if he takes his man down.”
This iron man of days gone by cannot really point out a modern day prop that impresses him exceptionally. “The rules even out the scrummaging contest. There are no more feared tight-heads. The battle in the front row is no longer contentious. Props can no longer demolish their opponents.”
The support today’s referees get to point out otherwise unseen errors greatly benefits the game, Bosman states. During his playing days it was often such undetected infringements that led to frustration and eventually fisticuffs. Today hardly a transgression happens without it being seen.
Vereeniging, now a club in the Valke Rugby Union, was one of the pillars of the former Transvaal’s rugby in the 1960s and 1970s. They dominated the Pirates Grand Challenge between 1962 and 1973 and a times fielded eight players in the provincial side, some of whom were Springboks. Piet Bosman is a former chairman and president of the club, and has two sons who followed in his Vereeniging and Transvaal/Lions footsteps. Duitser, left, like father Piet also a Vereeniging prop, also played for the Pukke and the Leopards. His ties with the GLRU were as Puk administrator when they ventured into the Pirates Grand Challenge competition. Duitser is the CEO of the Varsity Cup. His elder brother Koos, right, represented the Transvaal U13s at the Craven Week before Vereeniging became a club in the new Vaal Triangle union. He is now Vereeniging’s secretary.

What is your favourite movie? Lord of War and more recently I also watched The Equaliser and enjoyed that. Who was your rugby hero growing up? Gary Teichmann.
Warwick Tecklenburg By: Tarryn Steenekamp Loose-forward Warwick Tecklenburg has played 15 Vodacom Super Rugby matches for the Emirates Lions. While he is extremely physical on the pitch, he is cool, calm and collected as a person. Get to know a bit more about him in this brief Q&A! What are your hobbies away from rugby? I enjoy spending time in the outdoors so I love fishing, hunting and clay pigeon shooting. What has been your favourite rugby memory in your career thus far? Being handed my 2014 Currie Cup semifinal jersey, ahead of our game against the Sharks by my father. It was such a special moment for me. Who are your closest friends in the squad? I can’t single out any of the guys. They are all good mates and I really do get along with everyone! Where are your favourite holiday destinations? I love visiting Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

If you weren’t playing rugby what would you be doing as a career? I would be farming full-time. If you could invite any three people in the world to dinner who would they be? My wife and my parents – they are still the most important people to me in my life and I would choose them over any other celebrity or anybody else. Who do you think will contest the final of the 2015 Rugby World Cup? I haven’t had a look at the pools yet, but with England’s home ground advantage I`d have to say South Africa and England will make the final.
RAIDERS RUGBY CLUB Raiders Rugby Club started off their quest for a place in the 2015 Community Cup play-offs over the Easter Weekend in the best possible way when they beat the tough Bloemfontein Crusaders 20-16 away in the competition’s first round last Saturday. Raiders are not new to this and preceding national club competitions and understand what it takes to play and be winners in the very tough and also prestigious club competition. The Bosmont club represent the GLRU as winner of the 2014 Pirates Grand Challenge competition. This great moment in the history of the club came as little surprise after years
27 www.lionsrugby.co.za
of competing in the various first division competitions, i.e. the Pirates Grand Challenge and the Predator League, where Raiders have narrowly lost two finals after also playing in four semi-finals. Raiders are the only pre-unity club from the former Transvaal Independent Rugby Union (Tirfu) – and a special club they are indeed. They draw their approximate senior membership of 250 from several of the previously disadvantaged clubs and areas. They have continually strived to reflect the demographics of the South African society since rugby unity came about in 1992 – and on a
regular basis Raiders put a team onto the field made up of whites, coloured, Indian and black players. Many of the senior players have been with the club since their junior rugby days. Raider’s preparation for the Community Cup started in earnest the end of October through December. The players had an intense strength training programme and also two team-building weekends away in the bush (see the pictures) before they played Bloemfontein Crusaders. The Raiders Rugby Football Club’s non-racial membership stems from procuring players from the surrounding little-known disadvantaged areas such as Riverlea, Westbury, Bosmont, Eldorado Park, Ennerdale, Noordgesig and also Soweto areas such as Mapetla, Phiri, Jabulani, Chiawelo Protea, among others. They also draw players from areas such as Alberton, Roodepoort, Meyerton, Newlands, Turfontein and Pretoria.
scouting for untapped talent from all corners of South Africa. They field players from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Free State, Middelburg, Boland, Border and Kimberley who play a significant role in their success. Raiders are also proud of its Africa connections and over the years have fielded international players from countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Cameroon and even Japan. They play their rugby from the Bill Jardine Stadium, named after the legendary late Bill Jardine. The stadium is “home” to 10 high schools and 14 primary schools, and it has an own junior club section with a membership of more than 200 juniors, finances permitting. Raiders openly pronounce that their involvement in youth rugby is motivated by the club’s vision to facilitate and develop rugby in their surrounding communities to ensure that the youth choose sport and education as alternatives to crime and drugs.
In addition to this, the club prides itself in
