PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to Emirates Airline Park On behalf of the Golden Lions Rugby Union we wish to welcome the Eastern Province Kings senior management, coaches, team management and players to the stadium this afternoon. We welcome our equity partner Mr Altmann Allers, as well as our gracious and valued sponsors. Without your support, none of our needs would be met. Welcome too to our Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli and all GLRU management and staff. It is most gratifying that after four games our Xerox Golden Lions senior team finds themselves at the top of the Absa Currie Cup table. Additionally, our U21 team is currently second on the log and our U19 side is finding their feet as they gel together as a new group. For this reason I must heap all praise and gratitude to all of our coaches across all levels. We are proud of each of you for the stellar work you have done and we know you will continue to do us proud! The calibre and style of play has made many a supporter out there very proud of these teams. We are excited, through these sides, to be able to put on display an attractive and running style of rugby! A special word of thanks to our title sponsors Xerox and Emirates. We are truly grateful for your valued support. Remember, we are a stadium that is anti-abuse on all levels. Please refrain from booing and be tolerant of your fellow supporters! Enjoy the game! xerox message

xerox: Message from the Team Title Sponsor The Currie Cup reaches its halfway point this weekend and I am very proud to be backing a winning team. The Xerox Golden Lions maintained their hold on the top of the log after a strong showing in Nelspruit where they outclassed the Pumas 41-11 to make it a clean sweep of bonus point victories, having beaten the EP Kings 14-51 in PE, the Pumas 44-27 at home and the Sharks 16-31 in Durban. The Xerox Golden Lions also managed to score 167 points while conceding just 68 in those four games for the best points-difference on the log, taking them to the top of the Currie Cup Log and a really strong position going into the second round of fixtures. The Xerox Golden Lions proved far too strong for the Pumas in their Currie Cup clash at Mbombela Stadium last week. They won 41-11, after leading 16-3 at half-time. The Pumas’ discipline let them down badly as they received a number of yellow cards during the match for unlawful play, making it easier for the Xerox Golden Lions to penetrate their broken defensive line. It was a great team effort from the Lions who were without both their newly appointed captain Jaco Kriel and Lions captain Warren Whiteley. Marnitz Boshoff has found the form that made him such a threat last season before his injury and he scored a personal tally of 22 points. The Xerox Golden Lions have a star-studded line-up of players and reserves, and even though a number of big names are missing this season, others have stepped up and performed brilliantly to ensure our top spot on the log. Today’s match against the EP Kings on home turf should prove to be an exciting one. The pressure is on, but our boys have proved that they can handle it and know how to keep the momentum going. I would like to thank the Xerox Golden Lions supporters for being here today. Let’s defend our den and give all our support to the winning team! Tough Toy

one of games greatest legends By: Piet Ebersohn Few people become legends in their own lifetime. One such person is larger than life character Toy Dannhauser, erstwhile Transvaal captain – and believe it or not, he managed it without ever playing test rugby. Uncompromisingly tough, but with a remarkable sense of humour, Dannhauser is as far as can be determined the only player who played Currie Cup rugby at the diverse positions of fullback and lock. Before pulling the Red and White jersey over his head, Dannhauser represented Western Transvaal (now the Leopards) from 1959 to 1961 as a fullback while studying at Potchefstroom University. Then, while farming in the district of Koster in the then Western Transvaal, Dannhauser elected to drive to Krugersdorp to play club rugby for West Rand after being headhunted by another rugby legend, Springbok hooker Jan Lotz, where Toy’s brothers played in the 1940s. Marriage probably “cost” Toy two seasons of provincial rugby. He was first selected for Transvaal (forerunner of the Golden Lions) in 1962, but the date of the match was changed and clashed with the date of his marriage causing him to withdraw from the team. The next time he was picked was only in 1964. 14 www.lionsrugby.co.za

He went on to play in 50 matches for Transvaal from 1964 to 1969, quite an achievement in those days, before he left to play 17 times for Natal in 1970 and 1971. He led Natal Country Districts to a third place in the platteland’s Paul Roos Competition in 1972, and when Northern Natal became an independent union in 1973 he also represented them. Dannhauser captained a team selected from the Paul Roos unions against the 1970 All Blacks

and played in numerous Springbok trials. He recollects three matches standing out in his Transvaal career: beating Western Province at Newlands in 1968 to permanently claim the Southern Cross Shield; being the only non-test team to beat the touring British Lions in 1968; and beating the visiting Wallabies in 1969. He captained the Red and Whites in all three these matches. The Southern Cross Shield was presented to the then SA Rugby Board on occasion of its 75th anniversary in 1964 to be contested as a challenge trophy along the lines of New Zealand’s Ranfurly Shield. It was handed to the then Currie Cup champion WP. Transvaal challenged them for the shield in 1966 and won 16-8. WP reclaimed it the same year. In 1968 Transvaal again beat WP convincingly 17-8 to become the lasting holder as the competition did not catch on, and the shield was shelved after that match. Transvaal played nine-man rugby to beat the British Lions 14-6 in 1968, with Dannhauser leading a dominating home pack, and individualist Springbok scrumhalf Dirk de Vos keeping them going forward with superb tactical and touchline kicking. Being an accomplished goal-kicker, Toy contributed a 55-metre penalty to the winning score, hitting the crossbar with another longrange attempt. Although Transvaal did not dominate up front against the Wallabies to the same extent that they did against the Lions, they ran in four tries to two and won 23-14. Dannhauser once again kicked a penalty goal from midway. Asked who his most difficult lineout opponent ever was, he points out that a lock’s direct opponent is seldom his biggest problem. “It is the niggling from behind him that you need to be on the lookout for,” he says, naming the 1968 Lions flanker Bob Taylor as the guy who gave him the most trouble in this respect. 15 www.lionsrugby.co.za

“I told him to leave me alone, but he kept on pushing and pulling and I put him in his place, the only time I hit somebody on the rugby field. However, later we became the greatest of friends.” Considering the state of the art medical assistance nowadays available at rugby matches, one can hardly believe the dismal experience Toy relates from a match he played for Western Transvaal against Eastern Transvaal (currently the Valke). While tackling an opponent, the latter’s boot collided with Dannhauser’s throat and Toy swallowed his tongue. He says medically speaking there are only about four minutes to save a person’s life in such an occasion. Fortunately, his team-mate Dick Putter, later a Springbok prop, had some knowledge about this from his studies in physical training. Putter got hold of the linesman’s flag, which in those days had a wooden staff, and a knife. The prop cut part of the staff away and inserted it in between Dannhauser’s jaws, breaking some of his teeth in the process, but Putter forced the jaws apart and got Toy’s tongue out of his throat to save his life. “They tell me I was blue in the face by then.” The injured player was carried off the field, dumped on a bench in the change room, and the match was continued. Dannhauser says he was just coming to when the players returned to the change room after the match, asking them where they were coming from. Toy also played an important role in Quagga and SA Barbarian rugby as administrator after representing both teams. In 1999 he was the manager of the SA Barbarians Sevens team playing in Hong Kong and Japan. In Japan they lost to France in the final. www.lionsrugby.co.za 15

Pirates Grand Challenge comes a long way By: Piet Ebersohn With the Pirates Grand Challenge play-offs currently being played, let us review the past one and a quarter century since the senior Transvaal clubs met in competition for the first time in 1889. In a strange twist in the cup’s history Pirates who once ensured the future of the cup, on another occasion almost lost it forever. Pirates won the Imroth Trophy, as it was originally called, five years in a row from 1890 to 1894. The trophy became theirs after their first hat-trick of wins, and they returned it to the Transvaal Rugby Football Union (forerunner of the Golden Lions Rugby Union) for purposes of the club competition that has since been known as the Pirates Grand Challenge Competition. When the Greenside club beat the Pukke in Potchefstroom in the final of the Pirates Grand Challenge in 2001 the celebrations continued on their bus back to Johannesburg and into the night when they arrived in Johannesburg. It was only on Monday morning when they had to return the trophy handed them after the match, that the realisation came: the Pirates Cup, first played for in 1889 and which was on the bus, was nowhere to be found! The growing panic of the Pirates players and management was however unfounded. Good club manager that he is, the then Pirates club manager Pieter Visser, now manager of amateur 28 www.lionsrugby.co.za

rugby at the GLRU, had taken care of the trophy – and calmly broke the news when, eventually, he was contacted. The origin of rugby in the then Transvaal largely is linked to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. Like mining towns that sprang up in other countries, Johannesburg was a rough and disorganized place. It was populated by white miners from other continents, African tribesmen who did the bulk of unskilled mine work, a very large number of European prostitutes, gangsters, impoverished Afrikaners and tradesmen. With few activities to occupy their spare time other than can-can girls and the rough pubs, many of the ‘newcomers’ to the City of Gold joined or formed clubs. In 1885 Potchefstroom Dorp was the first club to be formed. Then followed Rand Wanderers, Pirates, Pretoria (1888), May Consolidated, the latter becoming Diggers in 1894 when merging with Main Reef, and West Rand. West Rand later became Krugersdorp and then Harlequins. Kaffrarians (later called Olympics and then Rovers), and in 2012 Pretoria, are the only two of these forerunners that did not survive. The Transvaal Rugby Football Union was formed in 1889, the same year as the SA Rugby Football Board. Pretoria Rugby Club, who became defunct in 2012, became the first Transvaal champions when they beat Pirates 1–0 in the final of the

inaugural provincial club competition at the Wanderers grounds at Kruger Park in 1889. A look at the winners of the Pirates Grand Challenge shows that there is a good spread of winners through the years. It is also noticeable that Pirates, Diggers and Roodepoort have won the competition in “surges” – and the latest winners following this trend are the Pukke, who won the competition six times in the first seven years after joining the Golden Lions leagues. Three clubs hold the record of five successive titles. Diggers achieved it twice (1895-1899 and 1958-62). The latter won the title 11 times in the 15 years from 1948-1962 and shared it once. Having lost it PGC status, Diggers is currently playing in the Senior Grand Challenge Competition. The other two clubs are Pirates (1890-1894) and Pukke (2002-2006) while Roodepoort won the competition eight times in 10 years between 1985 and 1994. Diggers have been winners on 26 occasions and twice shared the trophy twice. The club is also listed as having won the union’s once off Senior Competition in 1915, but the history of the University of Pretoria Rugby Club by DH Heydenrych claims that Diggers won the Rand Division and Tukkies the Pretoria Division, with the students winning the final against Diggers at the Wanderers 14-12 to become the Transvaal Champion.
