Reyneke, die voormalige hoof uitvoerende beampte van die Goue Leeus Rugby-unie (GLRU), se betrokkenheid by rugby in dié unie
het 36 jaar gelede as speler begin toe hy die destydse Transvaal op skoleen o.20-vlak verteenwoordig het. Dié langtermynverhouding kan egter kwalik as maatstaf vir sy passie vir die sport gebruik word. Ná Reyneke van Union na Alberton Rugbyklub verskuif het, gebeur

dit toe dat een van die klub se belangrikste wedstryde op een van Reyneke se belangrikste dae val: sy troudag. Hoegemaak? Soos dit ’n haker betaam (hulle is mos eiesoortige karakters), besluit Reyneke die liefde sal seëvier en die wedstryd sal voortgaan. Skaars was die strop om sy nek gesit of hy is af veld toe om sy eerste wedstryd as getroude man te speel. Alberton wen toe en Reyneke gaan sluit hom aan by sy gaste by die bruiloffunksie. Dié wen beteken toe dat Alberton die volgende Woensdag in ’n eindstryd moes speel met sy wittebrood wat eers kon geskied ná sy verpligtinge op die veld afgehandel is. Die troukoek was, seker heel voorspelbaar ... ’n rugbybal. Met sy spelersloopbaan afgehandel het Manie by Alberton se bestuur betrokke geraak. Hy is sedert 1994 lid van die GLRU se bestuursraad en is in 2001 tot voorsitter van dié raad verkies. In Augustus 2007 is hy as hoof uitvoerende beampte van die GLRU aangestel.
Reyneke het die leisels oorgeneem in sekerlik een van die moeilikste tye in die unie se geskiedenis, maar dit was ’n uitdaging wat hy nie geskroom het om aan te vat nie. Hoe seg groot oom Kevin de Klerk, president van die GLRU: “Manie het nog altyd meer hart as size gehad.” Sy mees gekoesterde rugbyherinneringe was vir hom sy dae as speler by Alberton. “Dit was ’n groot eer en voorreg om weekliks langs spelers soos Kevin (de Klerk) te speel. En die samesyn tussen die spelers, dis een aspek wat ek baie mis. Dis ’n jammerte dat dit in die professionele era verlore gegaan het.” Reyneke het in 1996 die eerste keer die grootbaas van Alberton geword en die pos vir vyf jaar beklee voor hy die klub se president geword het totdat hy Leeus toe is. Dit is heel gepas dat die GLRU se besluit om die vyf tuiswedstryde in die kwalifiserende ronde van die Curriebeker op die velde van klubs te speel, op 23 April by Alberton afskop. En dis ook nie ’n hierjy-wedstryd nie, want dit is die buurspan van Pretoria, die Blou Bulle, wat kom besoek aflê.

REPAIRS DONE ON EMIRATES AIRLINE PARK PITCH THE ‘EL NINO’ effect has proven to have an even more devastating effect in its wake in 2016 with weather systems being adversely impacted around the world and also in South Africa where maize output has dropped by 30%. It has now also directly impacted on the current state of the pitch at Emirates Airline Park which has
seen break-up during scrummaging, rucks and malls since the first home Vodacom Super Rugby game against the Cheetahs on 19 March. El Nino causes a warming in sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, and can lead to unusually heavy rains in some parts of the world and drought elsewhere. www.lionsrugby.co.za

Background on the pitch at Emirates Airline Park: This pitch is a sand-based growing medium to provide adequate drainage and good playing conditions during wet weather. It was constructed in 1996. The pitch is based on a two-grass system where a warm season grass is used in the summer and cool season grass is used in winter to provide a deep root system all year round. “The El Nino effect has restricted grass growth and poor root establishment at the park,” explains Mike Erasmus, stadium manager at Emirates Airline Park. In the game against the Crusaders two percent of the playing surface
was breaking up due to high temperatures in the week leading up to the game. As a result corrective steps had to be taken this week leading up to the Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Stormers on April 16. Johan van Vuuren, the pitch expert at Emirates Airline Park and one of the leaders on pitch management in South Africa, headed up the corrective action project. “This had to be done to ensure the safety of the players and to restrict injuries. We had to take these precautionary measures and while it will take three weeks to recover, the pitch will be ready for all the forthcoming fixtures including the Test in June,” Erasmus concluded.
