PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • 5 www.lionsrugby.co.za
WELCOME TO EMIRATES AIRLINE PARK, HOME OF THE EMIRATES LIONS TODAY WE WELCOME the Hurricanes to our home turf and we look forward to a clash which has always offered a fast-paced game with much action in the past, and we wait in anticipation to see what these two teams will produce tonight. A big thank you is extended to Vodacom for making this exciting competition possible. A heartfelt thank you to each and every sponsor and partner for your support and especially thank you to Emirates, our team sponsor. It is an honour and privilege to have you backing us. Your support, on all levels, is invaluable and we are proud to have you as not only our team sponsor but our partner and friend.
Today we again have a curtain raiser where two top school sides will entertain us: Hoërskool Kempton Park and Hoërskool Transvalia. I want to laud our CEO Rudolf Straeuli for this initiative which will see school boy rugby in all our Vodacom Super Rugby curtain raisers. Good luck to coach Johan Ackermann and captain Warren Whiteley for this tough encounter. Please remember to visit our website www.lionsrugby.co.za for all your Lions rugby news. Enjoy the day with us. Kevin de Klerk. President: GLRU

PLAYERS SCORING POINTS FOR KNOWLEDGE Vodacom’s Tries for Books campaign is feeding the hunger for knowledge during this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby tournament as tries are not merely just points on the score board but books in hands. Vodacom is donating R7000 towards setting up e-libraries at underprivileged schools around the country for every try scored by a South African team. South African teams have already made a massive contribution to the initiative scoring more than 100 tries with the total fast approaching the R1million mark. Winning is no longer the only incentive to cross the whitewash but helps to build communities of knowledge and learning. The e-libraries based at Vodacom ICT Centres around the country, will be loaded with eBooks which will give communities in need access to learning material.
Thanks to the contribution with the oval ball, the donations to date can be translated into creating 10 e-libraries so far. Eighty-five percent of South Africans do not have access to a nearby library and the project’s aim is to drive education through literacy. Learners already have access to Vodacom’s 61 countrywide ICT resource centres that are loaded with an exciting collection of e-books as part of the recently launched e-Libraries programme, with more to come thanks to the Tries for Books campaign, powered by Vodacom. More Teams. More Games. More Tries. More Books. More Knowledge. Follow the conversation at #Tries4Books

RAIDERS
ON COURSE FOR THE GOLD CUP By Piet Ebersohn and Wim van der Berg “Nothing will stop us!” Those words by the president of Raiders Rugby Club, Derek Jardine, clearly indicate the club’s determination to qualify for the Gold Cup (formerly the Community Cup) for the third consecutive year. “This is probably the strongest side we’ve had in years,” says Jardine. ”We have worked for this inclusion in the Gold Cup in the off-season and have
a good mix of experienced and young players with one goal: to play against the country’s best non-university sides.” Raiders must finish the league as the GLRU’s highest-placed non-university club to qualify for the Gold Cup play-offs in August, which will decide the final two places in the 20-team tournament. The Gold Cup kicks off on Saturday, September 10.
RAIDERS • 11 www.lionsrugby.co.za
They strengthened their hopes of qualifying for this year’s Gold Cup international championship for non-university clubs with a thrilling 28-22 victory over Wanderers at the Bill Jardine Stadium two weeks ago and followed it with a one-point loss against UJ last week in a result determined by Raiders’ last minute missed conversion kick. The Raiders Rugby Club was born out of a proud tradition of rugby, with a rich history and origins stretching back over a 100 years. The club’s experiences during the first decade of democracy has mirrored that of the country, as it worked very hard to build a culture of excellence and a home for rugby players truly representative of South Africa. Raiders are the only pre-unity club from the former Transvaal Independent Rugby Union (Tirfu) – and a special club they are indeed. They draw their approximate senior membership of 250 from several of the previously disadvantaged clubs and little-known disadvantaged areas such as Riverlea, Westbury, Bosmont, Eldorado Park, Ennerdale, Noordgesig
and also Soweto areas such as Mapetla, Phiri, Jabulani, Chiawelo and Protea, among others, and also from outlying areas such as Alberton, Roodepoort, Meyerton, Newlands, Turffontein and Pretoria. They have continually strived to reflect the demographics of the South African society since rugby unity came about in 1992 – and on a regular basis Raiders put a team onto the field made up of whites, coloured, Indian and black players. This makes Raiders one of a handful of fully non-racial premier league clubs in South Africa which is reflected in the many people with blue-chip credentials who have been associated with the club over the last two decades, including Springboks Conrad Jantjes, Gcobani Bobo and Ashwin Willemse. Some of the Lions/ Cats/Vodacom Cup players include Enrico Januarie, Baksteen Nel, Jaco Booysen, Ali Mhlanga, John Daniels and George Makwena. The club, which places a premium on the integration of educational and life skills initiatives for athletes from disadvantaged communities, is very much involved with its

own development programme for youngsters to spread the rugby gospel and provide a feeder system to ensure the club’s sustained success. Raiders play their rugby from the Bill Jardine Stadium, named after the legendary late Bill Jardine. The stadium is “home” to a number of high schools and primary schools,
and it has an own junior club section. Raiders openly pronounce that their involvement in youth rugby is motivated by the club’s vision to facilitate and develop rugby in their surrounding communities to ensure that the youth choose sport and education as alternatives to crime and drugs.

TWEE TRANSVAALSE KAPTEINS SE ALMA MATERS SLAAGS Deur André Bester
TWEE TRANSVAALSE KAPTEINS ALMA MATERS SLAAGS • 21 www.lionsrugby.co.za
