Key Point from Tutor
Expend the work, don’t just think of a map. Expend the area not just the gallery itself. Have a really strong understanding of the map. Sell my map to the client. How can my map help the client attract more customer? I told myself this is going to be a fun journey, as I noticed that one of our live brief including a map design for a gallery. I always have a big interest in maps but never have a professional opportunity to really get into it. And I am very pleased that to have this shot to work with Watts Gallery.
added values cost of the map unfolding the map Understand the target market Beautiful produce
Like every other project, the very beginning stage is always intimidating but also very important. In our very first group discussion, I had much valuable advice from the tutor. Those not just gave me the right direction for this project, but they also will benefit for the future experience to interact with the comercial cases. Understand the requirement from clients and be able to create the appropriate strategy really help to run the project smoothly at least enjoyable.

Choose Brief Before the trip
Fig.1.
Initial Research The site we were about to illustrate, Watts Gallery, was a place I hadn't be before. I had known nothing about that area, therefore, I started to do a bit of reseach about this gallery the first thing would help me to build up the vision about one site would be a board on pintereste.
Fig.2.
Before Leaving In order to collect the first hand information and start the project, our conductor had arranged one day trip to the Watts Gallery. The best way to utlize that day would be knowing exactly the reasons to be there, so while I was doing a bit initial researhc about the site I also came up with a list of tasks and information that I had to collect or pay attention to while the trip.
The information should be gathering on the trip

Gathering guide book and booklets Investigate the trails Investigate the stories Look at the car park how many spaces Take some time in the gift shop and the tea house what type of books do they sell and what other products do they have Ask what are the most popular products Collect the textures of the sites Are there more areas should be covered? Which building or space are popular? Would they provide the text and the information about the site for the map?

Trip to Watts Gallery
Visitor Centre Watts Chapel
Watts Gallery field trip I was very enjoying doing the field research, it helped me to understand the site more and be more empathetic. During the trip, I talked to several staffs and the visitors, like the lady in the visitor center, the tea house staff and the one in the Watts gallery. I am glad I did some of that cause I can be more related to this project. That day was a cloudy day so it was not that easy to take pictures for me since I lack photograph skills.

Research
digest those meaningless photos into different contents and discover what I can provide in my map.
After the trip
Collect first& second hand info Organize Draw& think Summarize& High light Ideas Research Deeply It was far enough to get most of the data or information on the field research day. But it was very important that I organized and categorize them after the trip. And I know that it wouldn't be enough time to draw all of the things so I took pictures and collect the booklets as much as possible. With the notes and the pictures, I started to make this research book. And visualized every building with the help of online sources. And draw the images from the pictures that I took. Through drawing, I could observe the object more deeply and relate to it more. I spent one weekend to do all these but the point of doing this help me to digest those meaningless photos into different content and discover what I can provide in my map.

How can add value to the ordinary leaflet without conflict with the style of the gallery?
Research Folding Fig.5.
Added Value Fig.4.
Since I am going to focus on printed map as my outcome, folding is one of the elements to explore. How can add value to the ordinary leaflet without conflict with the style of the gallery? After looking many different references, the most inspiring one is the one of the invitation design of Royal Bank of Scotland from Nick Clark Design. So I decided to use the idea of the envelope as the form of this map design. As the Gallery send a letter and invite people to come and enjoy the gallery; as the Watts' wanted to do when they first moved here: sent the message to the village that Art is for All. And the leaflet is not just going to be a leaflet but a letter with kindness and knowledge.

"The most important function of a map is probably the function of orientation or navigation." - Cartography-Visualization of Geospatial Data, P33 Kraok& Ormeling-2003

How to catch the visitors' attention? How to navigate them? Before start to design and draw the map, I looked up and seach for some other successful illustrated map that might be close to what clients asking for: bright; contempary; warm; beautiful and unique illustrated. It was also a very enjoyable research since I am a big fan of illustrated map. And I noticed some suitable ideas and also the elements that I should pay attention to. I spent more time in those map with little characters in, as if there might be some stories inside. So this is a great way that I could put some characters inside the map and "tell" the visitors which way to go. I could still remember that on the field trip day the staff in the front desk said no matter how map is well designed people trust people more than paper. So I think with the little charaters's help to navigate the site and also inform them the activities that visitors can do.

Planning&Testing

Getting ready • In order to privide an acurate map, it's a great way to use google map as a refernce. • Focuse on the main buildings that suppose to be on the map rather than put everything on it. So I traced trails and the buildings to get a good sense of direction. And then planned the map • Strat to try the style that might be able to apply onto the illustration.

Final Outcome Presentation
This might be the most intimidating but valuable experience for me. As an international student, it is not easy to get the opportunity to be able to show my design and present to the real world clients here in the UK. It means a lot to me when that moment the client opened up the 'Letter' I create for them. This is a wonderful learning experience for me to understand a bit more about how creative career that I am going to be in the future. I realize that to be able to create the products or work that help what client is aiming for and think in their position is a way to increase the opportunities of a positive outcome.

FeedBack& Reflection
With the help the tutor, I get to modify the layout and the details of my map. There are always many blind spots when work on a projects for a long period of time. It's always helpful to have someone to talk to and examine the design before showing the work to the clients. I need to work on the layout and get more sense of knowledge of it to be more efficient on finishing work. Also, it is a shame that I couldn't get to explore the ideal paper for the map, with the right paper I think I can present the idea more completely. In order to to be a more professional illustrator and designer, with a wide variety knowledge about medias, materials, tools and so on is very important. To know what to look for; where to find; and who to talk to are so crucial. The whole project was a challenging for me and I am very pleased to learn how to create a map with a process of researching and understand the background, it makes the making more meaningful. There were some technical problems while making but I know what I was doing so those seems like the opportunities to learn new things.
Presentation During the day of presentation, I was very lucky to observe other classmate's presentation. Her prestation was wonderful, I realize that it is helpful for clients to understand clearly if I could also provide a bit of the development of the design, such as the initial research or sketches. I think It's a bit irrelevant but I should clean the computer screen as it was the tool to present in the formal situation.
