Photobook project: photography, the book and self-publishing by paula roush 24-27 November 2016 3 days workshop + 1 day book dummies exhibition

In this workshop and exhibition, participants will have the opportunity to develop a photobook exploring photobook publishing as artistic practice.

Goals: 1) To support those already working on a photobook project or those wishing to develop a photobook from an existing photographic collection (practice). 2) Approach photobook as art publishing and photographic narrative (theory). 3) Explore the presentation of the photobook projects as installation at the pop-up shop of the Lisbon Municipal Archives, integrated in the Lisbon Book Fair (curation).

Who should apply: The purpose of the workshop is to support all those interested in photobook publishing, from independent practitioners to students and lecturers in photographic art education (at B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. levels). It is addressed to artists, photographers, photo journalists, book designers, art writers, researchers and academics.

Program: DAY 1 - Thursday, November 24 The photobook edition: 1843-1984-present. Mapping photography while editing before and after emergence of the term ‘photobook’. Historical projects, theoretical issues and technological context. DAY 2 - Friday, November 25 Visual photobook structure and photographic narrative issues in book format. Analog and digital dummy. Aspects materials related to the book object. Day 3 - Saturday, November 26 Development of photobook dummies to be presented on the last day. Day 4 - Sunday, November 27 Exhibition of photobook dummies at the Lisbon’s Photobook Fair, specifically in the pop-up store Municipal Archives of Lisbon.

About the Instructor: paula roush is an artist and educator who lives and works in London. Her imprint msdm publications is dedicated to photobook publishing, and some of her publications have been awarded the international circuit photobook, as in Arles (Photo-Text Award, 2016 short-list), Photobook Kassel (among the best photobooks of 2015) and winner of Sheffield Artist’s Book Award in 2015. Her work is in several artists’ books collections including the National Art Library of the Victoria & Albert Museum. She teaches photobook publishing at the London South Bank University, where she also curates the project ‘ ə / uh /-books,’ a space dedicated to the materiality of the photobook as an artistic practice http://uh-books.tumblr.com/

Equipment: Book design software: participants should bring their own laptop preferably with InDesign (+ Photoshop+ Bridge) installed. If needed, you can download free trials (for Macintosh or Windows): http://www.adobe.com/uk/downloads.html Basic InDesign skills are important and you will have opportunity to develop them after the workshop (varied photobook templates and handouts will be provided so you can practice at your own pace); Alternatively, it is possible to develop your book dummy bypassing InDesign so you can have develop and finish your book dummy during the workshop.
