Instead of 'lifestyles', Studio MVW aims to promote the originality of a concept, with a harmonious and sensory character that gives it strength and impact from the point of view of experience, but also how the brand has lived, In the case of retail or hospitality spaces; when it comes to furniture design, the emphasis will be placed even more on the articulation between function and narration and on the feeling of the material.

Anchored in its time, Studio MVW is aware that the simultaneously peaceful and agitated spirit that we are faced with is in fact a reflection of a human and societal fragility specific to the era as the source of new meaningful concepts for the present and the future.

This is a real opportunity that requires constant attention. Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu want to fit with this new temporality by inscribing their know-how and their 'know-how-to-be' within their innovative framework, in China, in Asia as well as internationally.

The two creators of the studio, with their complementary skills and cultural crossovers, have the versatility to avoid falling into the clichés of the traditional Chinese form. Both are committed to developing and transmitting a conceptual and useful retranscription of the Eastern spirit through universally recognisable forms and creations. Their use, for example, of treated pink jade in a floating table top, or marble assembled into asymmetrical collages like precious pebbles, testifies to a desire to move away from decor in order to sublimate the form and the material, the contrasts, the uses and the proportions. While nature is a foundational element and a raw material, Studio MVW expresses it with the freedom of a creating gesture that is fully aware of the function.

In the future, the designing duo intends to cultivate and develop this creative singularity that is the basis of their renown, and for which they are increasingly consulted. Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu want in particular to capitalise on their very particular relationship with architecture in their projects and their furniture design. Strong volumes, sculptural elements, the concern for the atmosphere of a space rather than the stylistic effects - so many guiding axes for Studio MVW and its own talent for telling stories that are each unique and different, but which combine a welcome surprise and a fully embraced overall harmony.

Studio MVW has been evolving for 15 years in the heart of the Shanghai megalopolis, which is experiencing tremendous growth as an economic and financial capital, while increasingly positioning itself as the Asian hub for the art and collectible design market. By breathing a welcome breath of renewal on this very dynamic territory, characterised by the creation of exclusive projects in the retail and hospitality sectors as well as in art and design furniture, the Franco-Chinese duo of architect Virginie Moriette and designer Ming Xu has forged a strong and recognised identity in which an elegant signature nourishes a spirit merging East and West. The common thread: the combination of nature and culture that irrigates the various projects, and in particular the design of spaces affirming a strong sense of proportion and a sharp balance between light, well-being and sustainability.

Studio MVW seeks to counterbalance the frenzy of the Asian continent with a cultural introspection and slowness. This central choice is based on an indepth reflection of the context in which each of the projects is deployed, and defines the philosophy and the means used to meet the needs of each of its customers. Analysis is linked with a stylistic composition that combines the sense of aesthetics with the choice of beautiful materials, of textures that enhance the tactility and the quality of the environment, and the connection with nature that is one of the foundational elements of the conceptual approach.

By playing with the scales of architecture and objects, Studio MVW also designs sculptural furniture that acts as an ideal showcase of the studio’s philosophy and know-how. Through a close collaboration with BSL gallery in Paris, its collections are exhibited at international fairs such as PAD Paris, PAD London and The Salon Art + Design fair in New York.

In the future, Studio MVW wants to anchor the perennial aspect of its designs by drawing from everyday observation, the basis of what could nourish an exceptional, contemporary life. The ephemeral and the sensational are of little interest to the duo, who share a conviction to deepen and innovate within what already exists, rather than to overproduce or follow trends.

Virginie Moriette & Ming Xu Frontier Explorers / 跨 越 疆 界

Since they set up their design studio in 2006, Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu have constantly been investigating and questioning boundaries – between their respective cultures and those of other continents, between architecture and design, between design and art.

Inspired by a combination of influences and references, they are carving out their own path, away from clichés and expectations, with a key underlining principle: turning every project into a new challenge.

TLmag: Could you tell us about the beginnings of Studio MVW? How did it all start?

VM: When we arrived in Shanghai in 2006, we moved into an empty apartment and we started thinking about how we could furnish it, but all we could find were very ornate objects that did not match our taste. So we decided to try and create our own pieces of furniture – first for ourselves and then we started creating pieces for our friends

as well. One thing led to another, we found a place, we created our firm and made more furniture items. Soon after, we won an ELLE Deco design award for one of the pieces, a bookshelf called Wen ST 02 , and this is how clients started coming to us for architecture and interior design projects.

TLmag: The name of your design practice, Studio MVW, has a hidden meaning in Chinese. How does it translate in English and how does it define your approach?

VM: Until 2016 our firm was named Design MVW. We decided to call ourselves Studio MVW because it more accurately reflects the way we work. We like researching and experimenting and the term ‘Studio’, which better encapsulates these ideas in English, is closer to our approach.

MX: In the West, a lot of professionals choose to name their company after themselves, whereas in China, people like company names that also convey

meaning. Our f irm’s Chinese name combines our first names: Ming, which mean light, He, which means fusion, and Wen Ji – for Virginie – which respectively means culture and joy. In a way, Studio MVW, which is based on our own names, also expresses our values and the union of our two cultures.

VM: And it also echoes several aspects of our work, and the names we choose for our furniture; for example, our lighting collection, Ming, our accessories, He (link), our bookshelves, Wen (culture), or our tables, Ji (joyful moments shared around a table).

TLmag: Your work is influenced by a diversity of cultures and references.

How would you describe your style?

VM: It is true that we are inspired by many influences – by China first because it is the country where we live and work and because its culture is extremely rich – but we also get inspired when we travel across Asia or Africa or

other parts of the world. We do not want to limit ourselves.

MX: One thing we want to avoid at all cost is chinoiserie. You will find very few typical shapes in our furniture because our goal is not to imitate classical Chinese styles. When we started our firm we tried doing this, but we stopped right away because it was just too easy and literal. Our objective is to communicate a Chinese feel but not through pre-existing shapes. We want to invent new forms to do that. We also want our work to be in line with China’s cultural and artistic evolutions which have been incredible in recent years.

VM: We do not want to be categorized and be associated with a single style. What we like is precisely moving beyond clichés and creating objects that have a little more depth and density. Our designs combine Chinese influences, as Ming explained, as well as a close attention to function, proportions and a taste for simple and refined work, which probably comes from the French culture we also share.

TLmag: How does sustainability come into play in your design?

VM: Sustainability is not a central subject yet because China’s consumption society is still very recent. What we try to advocate through our work is durability. People always associate sustainability with eco-friendly or recyclable materials but there are other ways to be sustainable. In 2008, we tried to work with bamboo which proved very difficult and was just not the right solution. We have a different perspective on sustainability now. People buy and throw away things. We try to create beautiful, well thought out objects that people will want to keep.

MX : For u s , having a s u s t ainab le approach implies being respectful:

respectful of the objects you want to keep, respectful of space by creating well-built architectural projects and, of course, respectful of our clients.

TLmag: What kind of relationship do you have with clients during the course of a project?

VM: We like working in close collaboration and exchanging ideas with our clients; every project is driven by the objective of coming up with the right answer for it.

MX: And this is true both of the architectural projects and for the furniture we create. We want people who buy our objects to be able to use them as they wish and, to some extent, to participate in their creation.

VM: We do not like designs that are too rigid. We like modularity because it is a way to make objects more interesting and durable. You do not get bored with an object you can transform according to your needs and aspirations. Our XiangSheng Shelving Unit, for instance, is a module that can be used as a table, as a bookshelf or as a partition.

TLmag: You use materials like jade, marble, bronze or lacquer that are not only noble and beautiful, but reflect your interest in preserving cultural traditions and showing an appreciation for the skills and craftsmanship required to use these materials in the best way. Who do you work with and how do you source these materials?

MX: We work with local artisans who use locally-sourced materials and our goal is to enhance them through our creations.

We like to work in limited editions and design pieces that maximize the beauty of the material so that people can really appreciate the various textures of jade, bronze or marble. When we work with these materials, each step in the process is deliberate and precise. From the technical stage where we consider the shapes and forms that will best reveal the beauty in the materials and how to actually create them, to the artisanal stage, when they are transformed through craftsmanship and unique details and surfaces.

TLmag: How important is craft and the preservation of artisanal practices for Studio MVW? VM: Some techniques have already disappeared and cannot be revived, but whenever it is possible, we love using traditional know-how, yes.

TL # STUDIO MVW

TLma g : Yo u r wo rk m ove s f l u i d l y between different fields and on very different scales – from designing furniture for a gallery to working on architectural projects for the retail and hospitality industries. What is the common denominator in your projects?

VM: We really enjoy working on different scales and having to take that aspect into account when we work on ideas of integration and harmony. We enjoy moving from container to content and vice-versa.

Before we started Studio MVW, we both worked as architects on very large projects including an airport and an opera house, and it was very interesting to go back to a smaller scale with our furniture because it was more tangible.

MX: Working on furniture also enables us to freely explore new aspects of design and this research and experimentation enriches our architectural work. Conversely, what we do for our clients sometimes also inspires us when we make furniture.

VM: I think our fundamental objective is to create something unique for each project and each client. The common denominator of our work is the quest for exclusivity, which can translate into various expressions – like a new way to use a material or a new way to manage space, but always in a natural way – nothing should look contrived.

TLmag: Nature plays an important part in your work. How does it inspire you?

MX: To us, nature is like a universal language. Nature has no nationality, it is very diverse and unexpected, which is also something we try to emulate in our work.

Our first lamp was inspired by a very old tree in our courtyard. As we were observing it, we came up with the idea of adding asymmetrical branches which morph into different shapes depending on where you stand, and which introduce a feeling of freedom rather than just being geometric shapes.

VM: The notion of integration is also important in our work. Nature is very diverse and yet always perfectly integrated. Nature’s intrinsic beauty has always been an essential source of inspiration.

MX: We are currently working with artisans who make silk embroidery, a skill which was once frequently used but is now gradually disappearing. We are trying to reintroduce it into modern-day designs and to turn silk embroidery into a more contemporary art.

TLmag: How has your work evolved since 2006?

VM: Today, we feel we can go further and we aim for a more daring, avantgarde approach. We like experimenting and we also like telling stories through our work. Hospitality is a sector we would love to develop because there are many new projects emerging and an increased need for beautiful stories.

TLmag: What are your plans and goals for the future?

VM: We feel we are at a turning point.

We have worked on very interesting and stimulating projects in the last ten years or so, but we want to go even further now and assert our identity as a studio through even more contemporary and experimental projects.

MX: We would like people to find new answers in our work – not just on the surface through the shapes we choose – but in the concepts, philosophies and heritage we try to build upon. We want to be increasingly free to explore, to be inspired and to inspire people.

VM: We always try to look for another answer. We always hope to go further in our research and to find an answer that truly matches both the client’s need and who we are.

TLmag: Has there been a project that posed a real challenge?

VM: I think the real challenge in China is time management. It is slightly less perceptible now but you have to build fast. We really see each project as a new adventure to embark on and so far, each project has been an inspiration for the next one.

TLmag: Is there a project you are particularly fond of?

VM: Of course, you always wish you had done better, but we know the amount of work that went into each piece of furniture and each architectural project and we are generally happy with the results.

MX: We do not want to cite a favourite project because we don’t want our other works to be jealous!

The importance of blending innovation, technology and the natural landscape to create a better world is becoming crucial. Whether it is in the products we consume or the places we gather, channeling the power of nature – its shapes, forms, textures – and bringing them indoors, creates a sense of balance and a feeling of positive energy that is felt by the people who use the space. Using this as a base from which to design innovative and future-forward spaces infuses them with a sense of timelessness - not overtly trendy but harmonious and unified. From creating a small biosphere within a contemporary dessert bar in the heart of Beijing to reviving an ancient temple house in the tea region of Hangzhou or a social club surrounded by nature in northeastern China, hospitality has found new meaning through these perfected designs.

brings about an undeniable wow effect. From the outside, the bar looks like an intriguing, hi-tech oasis. It is enhanced by the transparency of the façade whose mesh cladding also conjures up the lightness and ref inement found in the architecture of the thinly layered desserts sold in the bar. Inside, the first striking element is the choice of celadon as the key colour – both an evocation of nature and of Asian aesthetics – combined with mesh that intensifies the visual impact of the organic, space-age, almost Kubrick-esque outline created by the walls and ceiling.

Studio MV W’s Aoyama Dessert Bar in Beijing is a perfect illustration of how much architecture can contribute to the launch of a new concept. By turning an idea into something tangible, design choices enable individuals not only to physically experiment with it, but also to incorporate it into their culture. For the creation of this new type of bar that sells very contemporary, sophisticated desserts based on Japanese recipes, Studio MV W was asked to develop a space around the notions of nature, experimentation and traditional Asian codes.

The investigation of these three aspects led to a creative solution that makes the most of that blend and

which is a more exclusive space dedicated to tea drinking. The use of natural materials like stone and wood complements the rounded shapes and smooth Corian surfaces, introducing a sensorial dimension into an otherwise ultramodern space, resulting in a comfortable, welcoming laboratory.

The science-inspired aesthetic is also visible in the hanging lights in the front space as well as in the glass console showcasing a tree or in the plants exposed within transparent blocks, like an herbarium from the future. The impression of purity created by acrylic walls, mirrors and sleek surfaces evokes a cutting-edge museum of natural history, a place to experiment and

invent tomorrow’s life. In that sense, the architecture developed for Aoyama Dessert Bar exemplif ies an interesting way to go beyond a purely commercial concept and to elevate the discussion by creating a universal, poetic frame around it.

Poetic Elegance for a for a Skincare Brand Steeped in the Holistic Traditions of Tea 为源于传统茶文化的护肤品牌，塑造诗意优雅的形象

For an architect, imagining the first flagship store of a newly created brand is always a stimulating challenge.

Successfully translating a universe defined by words and visual elements into a 3D experience can only be achieved through careful thinking and close collaboration with the commissioners of the project.

With Maison Lu Ming Tang, the French skincare brand’s f irst tea house and store, the challenge was further heightened by another factor: the choice of a former Qianlong Imperial Library as the setting of the brand’s home. Nestled in the UNESCO-listed Longjing (Dragon Well) tea mountains of the Hangzhou region, the temple house, wh ich dates back to the Song dynasty, was the place chosen by Emperor Qianlong to write poems and calligraphy celebrating the virtues of tea during the Qing dynasty. Yu Shu Lou, as the building is called, was undeniably the perfect place

cup-style lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling and custom-patterned tea leaf prints applied to the wooden steps.

The staircase opens onto to the teahouse on the upper f loor, which is also characterised by a very airy feel and a close connection to the lush greenery surrounding the building. Studio MVW salvaged a vaulted roof hidden under a low flat ceiling and turned it into a centrepiece which refreshes and enhances the new space through its tea green and white colour scheme, and its ceiling frescos combining illustrations and the Lu Ming Tang logo.

Green partitions with modernized Chinese plum flower patterns introduce rhythm and create privacy for guests enjoying tea in what feels like an open tree canopy. Wooden latticed window patterns, marble, framed silkscreens, laser-engraved mirrors, lacquered pi l la rs a nd c us tom-desig ned ba mboo f u r n it u re inspired by the minimalism of the Ming dynasty and traditional French-style rattan outdoor furniture convey elegance and authenticity.

As a building infused with tea culture and history, Yu Shu Lou could hardly have dreamt up a better future.

There is little doubt that Emperor Qianlong’s poems will continue to f loat in the air and inspire Lu Ming Tang and tea lovers alike.

for a brand harnessing the natural powers of Longjing tea to revitalize urban skins, as well as an exceptional opportunity for Studio M V W to express both its understanding of Chinese tea culture and its French sense of elegance.

The exterior architecture of the library, including its beautiful wooden door panels, was retained, with Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu focusing on the interior design to breathe new life into the building. The ground f loor, which hosts Lu Ming Tang’s f lagship store, was stripped of dark wooden floors, revealing a superb traditional stone paving that was turned into a key element, giving the interior a beautiful and unique patina.

Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu drew inspiration from traditional Chinese herbal apothecary cabinets to design the display counter, compartments and drawers, while the display stands are reminiscent of traditional tealeaf drying bamboo baskets. Above the counter, ceramic pendant lights shaped like Chinese tea caddies shed a soft light complementing and enhancing the subtle blue-grey colour of the brand’s logo, creating a soothing, delicate atmosphere.

found in Ancient China while copper, which is used in the round barrel stools of the reception area and in the lamps of the bottom floor, infuses the spaces with warmth and gives them a very special patina.

Another strong component of the club’s architecture is the recurring play on light and shadow. The windows in the reception area, which open onto a view of the South Lake, feature an “ink painting” of the mountains made of laser-cut aluminium plates that lets in natural light during the day and becomes a modern landscape painting at night, as the light coming from inside turns it into a photographic negative. On the other side of the room, a digitally synthetized bamboo image covers the glass delimitating the staircase, echoing the themes of nature and light. Perforated panels on the ceiling of the top floor reiterate lighting effects and evoke a mashrabiya-like, modern artwork.

Envisioned as a core element of the architecture, light is neither just functional nor ornamental, it is also used symbolically to convey the idea of a strong vital force, an energy coming from the past and projecting the space into the future. The traditional candlestick, which inspired the design of a specially made copper hanger, evokes permanence and change through the image of a flame – a felicitous choice for a club whose design is anything but frozen and materialises all at once the roots of yesterday and the energy of tomorrow.

Located near Xuzhou in Yunlong Mountain – whose name originates from its nine dragon-like peaks – the Yunlong Club is another example of Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu’s penchant for the exploration of opposites and of the notion of balance. Here, nature and culture, inside and outside, eastern elegance and contemporary chic, past and present coexist to create a new type of cosiness perfectly in tune with the surrounding environment.

The club is divided into three f loors. A lounge and restaurant on the ground floor, and a reception area on the first f loor, are visually linked by a clever use of transparent partitioning that conveys a sense of airiness and openness. This feeling is also present in the large floorto-ceiling windows connecting the restaurant spaces with the sunken exterior courtyard decorated with many green bamboo plants. The upper f loor is occupied by meeting rooms and private dining rooms, all framed by a ceiling reminiscent of the original pitched roof from modern Huizhou architecture. The rooms are furnished with simplified – thus more suitable to commercial use – versions of Studio MVW’s classic Cotton and Louis Ming Chairs.

The notion of integration goes beyond the geographic or topographic aspects to incorporate a strong cultural dimension, particularly perceptible in the use of materials. Bronze, which is associated with the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the Chu and Han dynasties and notably with the city of Xuzhou, is extensively used throughout the club to reinforce its connection with its historical and local context. 明合文吉设 计的云龙会 会所，因位于徐州云龙山内而得 名。 云 龙 山 的 九个 大 小 峰 峦 云 雾 缭 绕，状 如 游 龙，启 发 两 位 设 计师探 索 对 立和平 衡 的概 念。在 这个 空间里，自然 与 文化、 内 与 外、东 方 之 美 与 现 代 时 尚 、过 去 与 现 在 等 相 异 的 元 素 得 以 和 谐 共 存，创 造 出 与 周 围 自 然 环 境 完 美 契 合 的 崭 新 舒 适生活型态。 云 龙 会 会所 空 间 分 为上下三 层，楼 底 被 规 划 成 门厅以 及餐 厅，中 间 一 层 用 于 接 待 区 域 。底 层 与 中层 之 间 被 一 个 通 透 的中 空区 域 所 连 接，设 计成 了一 个 气 势 开 阔 的 视 觉 空 间 。 在 餐 厅 内，可 透 过 落 地 的 玻 璃 窗 台 观 赏 沉 底 的 院 子 里，满 院 的 青 翠 绿 竹，同 样呈 现 出 豁 然 开 朗 的 感 觉 。三 楼 设 有会 议 室 和 餐 饮 包 间，抬 头 看见 天 花 板 的 形 态，活 像 现 代 徽 式 建 筑 的 斜 屋 顶，并 用 设 计 师 将 之 加 以 简 化 的 “ 棉 花 椅 ” 和“路易明” 座 椅，使 空 间 更 适 合商业 的 需 要。 相容并蓄的手法不仅 运用于 会所所在 地的地 理 或 地势的 层 次，更 扩 大 至 文化 的 层 面，尤 其 在 物 料 的 应 用 中 体 现 出 来 。设 计 师 发 现 与 楚 汉 文化 深 有 渊 源 的 徐 州，有 着 非 常 多 能 够 体 现古 时传 统 工艺 的 铜 器，因此 铜 的 材质 成 为云 龙会 装 饰 的 一 大 要 素，将 空 间 与历史和 地 域 文化 联 系 起 来 。三 楼 的 铜 吊 灯，其 造 型 参 考了 古代 的 铜 钟；接 待 区 域 的 圆 筒

While materials, textures and surfaces are constantly researched and tested, the designers are also interested in exploring the possibilities of luxury in the 21st century — what this concept means in our contemporary lifestyle and how it is signified in our daily surroundings. For Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu, true luxury is defined through interiors that convey a sense of well-being, beauty and harmony, but which also reflect elements of nature along with an honest approach to how the space will function for its users. It is innovation with a poetic touch. The flow of water, curvilinear forms, the unexpected patch of greenery, and artistic lighting all bring a new level of grandeur and warmth to the space as much as the noble materials that perfectly decorate the space.

Feeling the energy and appreciating the qualities of a particular site is a fundamental first step in any architectural project. This connection underscores how much the surroundings impact the designer’s work and initial reflections from the very start. In the case of the sales office designed by Studio MVW for OCT (Overseas Chinese Town Enterprises), in Wuhan, Western China, the setting was a clear inspiration.

Located next to a famous lake and lush forest, the 3000-square metre sales office was designed to let the surrounding nature in and to create a connection with the elements, especially water, which acts as a unifying motif throughout the building. The ground f loor immediately immerses guests in an aquatic, weightless-like atmosphere with its boat-shaped reception desk and bar, as well as its spiral staircase, chandelier and droplet-like lighting f ixtures echoing water elements. Partitions bring rhythm to the space while generating ripple effects that conjure up the image of ricochets on a pond along with feelings of peacefulness and harmony.

One of the most interesting aspects of the sales office is its ability to create a new type of luxury through the combination of shapes and materials. One of the requirements at the start of the project was to imagine a very luxurious space that would accurately ref lect the high standards of the company and its services. In order to do that, Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu opted for a very contemporary expression of lavishness based on understated essentiality. This choice translated into simple, free-flowing, organic shapes and curves combined with the most noble, natural materials such as marble and stone, among others. The result was an assortment of subtle variations and details which are a delight for discerning connoisseurs and produce the impression of a uniquely comfortable, perfectly measured opulence.

On the second f loor, Studio MV W’s work combines luxury with another notion, that of a club, also at the core of the project. The designers developed this idea through three key spaces, all in line with the natural lushness of the ground floor. A negotiation room, divided into different areas by bookcases, opens onto the landscape, providing a beautiful view of the lake. It is complemented by a stunning Blue Landscape painting – another example of the interplay between nature and culture, between landscapes and artefacts that can be found throughout the building.

A multipurpose room designed to accommodate art exhibitions, cocktail receptions or events reiterates the design of the entrance. Finally, three rooms compose the VIP area, which is defined by the delicateness of its shapes and colours – lavender, pastel green, grey, and old rose – and by the originality of its wall reliefs – holes in aluminium wall panels that let natural light in during the day and create a beautiful landscape that turns into another picture at night. Like a photographic exploration of negatives, that choice breathes dynamism into the space and embodies the idea of a living nature, as does the backlit drawing of a natural stone in the bathroom or in the blue calligraphic landscape paintings seen in the bathrooms upstairs and in the bar.

The beauty of architecture, at its core, is the ability to match function and form in the sole choice of a shape or a material. In the case of office spaces, combining function and aesthetics is even more crucial, in the sense that not only do such spaces have to accommodate the specific needs linked to the company itself but, from a more general perspective, also have to improve employee wellbeing and productivity.

In the case of cosmetics company Uni Vinson, the objective was also to express a notion of timelessness, which is a fundamental component of the firm’s identity. For this reason, Uni Vinson asked Studio MVW to breathe new life into a classical building, the Shanghai Bund Source Y WCA, and to cr ystallize its 2,000 square metres of new office space into eternity.

To achieve this exciting cha llenge, Studio M V W opted for a ver y orga n ic, f low ing desig n to create a soothing atmosphere throughout the space.

This approach is visible from the entrance, where the architects opened up vertical volumes by partly demolishing the ceiling in between the 3rd and 4th f loors. The new double-height space creates a feeling of fluidity, which is reinforced by a staircase clad in pure white Corian and complemented by a brass handrail and mirrored walls. The few existing structural columns, which were originally square, were a lso reshaped into organic forms evoking plants emerging from the ground, while the light fixtures are reminiscent of biomorphic, vegetal forms.

The vegetal theme was also developed in a more literal manner through the creation of a different indoor garden on each floor, each of which improves work conditions in its own way. The third f loor, for instance, features a bright relaxation space inspired by the 19th century European greenhouse. “The impression of a garden is so real that we almost envision the gardener…”, the Uni Vinson teams declared, confirming the architects’ knack for fruitfully introducing nature in an otherwise very urban environment.

Imagining a home is of course a very different mission from designing public, open spaces. When they were asked by a young actor to create the interior design of his home, Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu knew the direction would be given less by an abstract concept than by their client’s tastes and lifestyle.

Located in a high-end residency complex in Shanghai, the home was developed around a few key principles: comfort, modularity – through a vast space that can be customized according to the owner’s needs and wishes – and a refined mix of measured luxury.

The layout features a centra l living room that is organized around a large couch to comfortably watch movies and relax, a master bedroom and additional guest bedrooms.

A feeling of spaciousness and peacefulness is conveyed through clever arrangements of shelves and alcoves

showcasing the owner’s collections of art, teapots and bonsai without ever creating visual distractions.

What is striking about the DX Residence is its honesty in translating the tastes and personality of the owner, while avoiding any rigid stylistic formula. The space, which combines clean lines and neutral tones with noble, high-end materials like marble, never falls into a strict, minimalistic category or in a too obviously expensive and luxurious style. Rather, it plays on contrasts to develop its own aesthetic, giving pride of place to softness, warmth and personality. These qualities are also seen in the custom furniture design by Studio MV W. DX Residence illustrates a very contemporary take on luxury - one that redefines true comfort through spaces which not only reflect a person’s individuality but also enables the client to feel aligned with their inner self.

Sculptural space age styling and a bold colour palette def ines the f irst Pierre Cardin Home Showroom in Shanghai. Designed by Studio MVW, the avant-garde retail space was inspired by Pierre Cardin’s chic futuristic vision.

A fashion icon since the Fifties, Pierre Cardin is known for his revolutionary designs and experimental outlook. Inspired by geometric shapes and motifs, his work embraces imagination and innovation, blending circular movement and structured lines. An example of Cardin’s interest with shape and form can be seen in one of his most well-known designs, his sci-fi style ‘bubble dress’ (1954), which combined earthly elegance with out-of-this world colourways.

The bubble theme continued when, in 1989, Cardin became the second owner of the iconic Palais Bulles (the Bubble House), perched on a rocky cliff above the Mediterranean Sea in the South of France. When the original owner passed away, Cardin swooped in and completed work on the monumental house which was designed by Hungarian architect Antti Lovag to mimic early cave dwellings. Cardin translated his passion for

geometric shapes, symmetrical cuts and curves into the interiors, and the Bubble House, with its series of pod like domed structures, was to become a place that inspired him constantly.

Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu took inspiration from the Bubble House and from Cardin’s passion for scif i when developing the Shanghai Home Showroom.

The result is a dynamic 500-square-metre interior which offers visitors a dynamic retail experience and an insight into Pierre Cardin’s creative world. Bold colours and rounded forms define the retail journey which begins with a curved red Bubble House-style entranceway, leading to a dramatic white-walled interior defined by bold accents of green and red. Globe lighting – both ceiling-hung and incorporated into custom-designed merchandise stands – echoes Pierre Cardin’s fascination with bubbles.

In an elegant nod to the iconic archways of Parisian shopping arcades, the showroom’s central corridor is composed of a series of white archways inset with ref lective green lacquer panels. The shade of green used by Studio MVW was inspired by Pierre Cardin’s first showroom interior, which still exists today on the rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. The succession of arches inset with mirrors serves to create different perspectives depending on where you look. This further engages guests to discover the space.

Typical French wooden f looring is inset with diagonal green and red lines, adding more dynamism and energy to the interior. Mirrors ref lect the diagonal forms, giving further depth. Leading off the corridor are three bedrooms filled with Pierre Cardin homeware, plus three more merchandise rooms featuring clothes, socks and dining ware. To the rear is an elegant, well-proportioned marble and brass inlay Parisian-style bar area plus three meeting rooms.

Studio MVW’s custom-designed display furniture has been used throughout - inspired by a series of 1970s Pierre Cardin sculptures that blended the decorating function with an artistic personality. Said Cardin: “My furniture is sculpture. I like to work as a sculptor; it’s my life, my passion, my happiness and my joy. The reason of my work.” Studio MVW also incorporated grid motifs and geometry detailing into the display cabinets and the loose furniture to further emphasise Cardin’s space age style.

In all, the interior pace expresses beauty, flexibility, harmony and balance, allowing the imagination free reign. The composition of forms and colours creates a spontaneous joyful design, and an experience full of surprises due to the different perspectives experienced throughout.

When Czech crystalware company Moser entrusted Studio MVW with the mission to design its Taikoo Hui f lagship store in Shanghai, one of the key directives was to create an interior combining a timeless vision with a contemporary appeal. Building on their experience in borrowing designs from different cultures and fusing past and present influences, Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu embarked on the development of a very singular, sculptural space.

Built on the typically Czech architectural feature of the cross vault, wherein an arched form is used to provide a space within a ceiling or roof, the new flagship store resembles an ageless cathedral-like jewel box, blending shapes and materials in the most harmonious, yet unusual way. The sweeping curves of the vault act as a framework to create unique geometric effects and reflections enhanced by the richness of materials used – glass, mirror, crystal and brass.

The store creates a feeling of solemnity while maintaining texture and warmth, to which the use of stucco in the merchandising area as a polished, non-uniform backdrop also contributes. A spectacular Moser crystal chandelier in rose pink tones acts as a central focal point, embodying the quintessence of the brand’s heritage and know-how.

The space is divided into four areas showcasing the variety of Moser’s crystal collections and its long history.

But the store certainly goes far beyond its functional dimension to become part of the show – as f lagship stores should – and to not only contain but exalt the beauty of the jewels it has been entrusted with.

It is difficult to pinpoint the ingredients of good collaboration, but results do not lie – and the designs of luxury lifestyle brand Shanghai Tang entrusted to Studio MV W certainly point to a fruitful, creative cooperation between the two firms.

For its Hong Kong store, the brand chose Duddell Street, a location close to its iconic first store located on Pedder Street from 1994 to 2011, and to the highend fashion boutiques of Central. With a three-storey retail space of 15,000 square feet, this is the largest Shanghai Tang store in the world. But beyond its size, one of the building’s most remarkable features is its façade. Crafted from etched glass and brass, it pays a contemporary tribute to the Art Deco style of 1930s Shanghai, bringing a visual excitement to the street.

Through an elegant fusion of modern Chinese aesthetics and Art Deco style, the design of this impressive HQ communicates the values of a brand drawing inspiration from its Chinese roots and willing to translate its heritage into a contemporary language. An approach completely in line with the philosophy of Studio MV W, who found with Shanghai Tang the opportunity to develop this into a physical space.

The retail experience starts as soon as shoppers enter into the impressive entrance. The grand foyer boasts a majestic, custom-made, 2.5-metre high and 2-metre wide Shou crystal chandelier – a symbol of longevity – hanging from the entrance hall’s double-height ceiling and brought out by the wooden lattice and sepia-coloured mirrored walls surrounding it.

The womenswear and menswear departments are def ined by an atmosphere of intimacy and low-key luxury achieved through custom-made furnishings, mixing A rt Deco and Chinese styles, as well as a careful selection of materials: marble, brass, leather, wood, silk panels – with patterns and pops of colours, including the brand’s signature fuchsia. Designed as whimsical fantasy lands for “little emperors,” the children’s department offers a vivifying, playful take on retail, with their imperial yellow hues, tea caddyshaped changing rooms, and oversized motifs.

The store also features the Imperial Tailoring Ateliers, providing the brand’s legendary bespoke service and communicating its heritage and know-how. The experience is enhanced in the fitting rooms, decorated with hand-crafted wallpapers as well as Art Deco mirrors and wall bracket lights.

The lifestyle dimension of the brand is not overlooked.

It materializes in the home departments in both stores, which include a dining area with bone china and crystal stemware, a bedroom showcase, and a fragrance bar.

A total experience for Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu, who had the chance to intervene at all levels of the project, that echoes visitors’ comprehensive experience of the brand and of its inimitable universe.

Since the beginning of their partnership, Studio MVW has been crafting award-winning furniture collections and limited-edition sculptural objects.

Virginie Moriette and Ming Xu consider this aspect of their work as a perfect playground for exploration, allowing them to experiment on a smaller, more tangible scale that feeds into their imagination for larger architecture projects.

With their centrally-located showroom in Shanghai, Studio MVW showcases their bespoke furniture and accessories collections which can be custom commissioned by individual clients. The welcoming space provides the opportunity for people to experience the work in person and see the available materials, patinas and dimensions that are possible for each piece. This one-to-one relationship with the client is an essential part of their process— not only to be able to touch and feel the object but because

the piece is eventually designed to suit the owner. In line with their customised approach to furnishings they also design site-specific furniture for their own architectural projects as well as for others.

For their limited-edition furniture collections and functional sculptures, Studio MVW works with the French art and design gallery, Galerie BSL. It is an ideal collaboration that roots their work in that creative space between art, design, and decorative arts. These unique pieces are meant to be seen and used but treasured for a lifetime. They regularly present their new collections at luxury design fairs including PAD Paris and London and The Salon Art + Design at the Armory in New York, and they have collaborated with leading auction houses including special commissioned work for Christie’s. The firm has received several prestigious awards including a 2018 Wallpaper* Design award for their JinShi Pink Jade Coffee Table which was named “best blusher of the year,” and in 2019 AD China included Studio MVW, for the fourth time in a row, on their list of top talents working in Architecture and Interior Design.

There is a strong cultural dimension to the bespoke furniture and sculptural collections of Studio MVW. Each piece is an invitation to travel across time and space, like an artwork capturing the essence of a moment and translating it into a contemporary, innovative language. Seamlessly integrating Eastern and Western concepts about design and lifestyle into their creative process, the designers take inspiration as much from the formal elegance of the French Art Deco movement as in the philosophies behind traditional Chinese design. Abundantly creative, the designers infuse every collection with a sense of wonder and beauty. Colours are soft and sumptuous, materials are the finest. Whether the iridescence of the soft pink jade that begs one to touch it or patina surfaces that feel ancient and contemporary at the same time, the objects and furniture collections possess a particular allure that reflects their ability to evoke a sense of eternal beauty and a true passion for design.

As with their architecture and interiors projects, nature plays an essential role in their furniture design. Earthly and ethereal elements such as organic forms, straited layers, milky stone or vegetal motifs, bring a life force into each piece that creates an emotional connection. Modularity plays an important role in the furniture collections as well.

While each piece becomes a central talking point in any room, the work can be placed in various settings.

A table or console can be set against a wall or free standing, that is to say, they need not be fixed forever in one place but are able to be seen, and in some cases used, in multiple ways. In this way, Studio MVW has found a way to reintroduce meaning and durability in a world defined by overabundance and disposable products. The work is designed to be cherished and valued over time – the new family heirloom to be passed onto future generations.

With their JinShi Collection, Studio MV W introduces a refined collection of limited edition jewels for the home, celebrating the beauty of pink jade. Jinshi, which literally translates as ‘golden stone’, features f irst and foremost natural pink jade, a rare gemstone remarkable for its powder-like transparency and uniquely sensuous appeal. But the various methods chosen by the designers to enhance its beauty are equally noteworthy, for instance their use of rose gold coloured anodized stainless steel or their choice to use hidden LEDs to backlight the material and give it a subtle glow. Surfaces seem to f loat and there is a lightness and transparency that belies the weight of materials. The collection includes two different wall lighting fixtures, five variations around the console shape, a 200 cm high freestanding mirror, a table light and two floor lights, a set of three smaller table modules that can be arranged in various ways, as well as a coffee table featuring a large round pink jade top. Since its launch in 2017, the Jinshi Pink Jade Coffee Table has become an iconic piece of collectible design, receiving a 2018 a Wallpaper* Design Award as one of the most significant designs of the previous year. In this piece, the 110 cm diameter wide top rests only on one of the three golden spheres so that it appears to be magically levitating over the base. Mesmerizing as well are the iridescent shades of the Patagonia quartzite, its graphic pattern made of deep black, pale gold and moiré brown, and the incredible twinkling of the quartz, feldspar, mica and other mineral inclusions.

As if governed by the laws of nature, JinYe establishes itself as a both sophisticated and fundamentally organic collection where each piece stands as a miniature landscape for the home.

JinYe, which translates as Gold ( Jin) Leaf ( Ye) in Chinese, is an appropriate name for a collection based on the dialogue between a brass-coloured leaf with a subtle gold shade and the shimmering richness of Patagonia quartzite. This exceptional natural granite was born in a volcanic region in Brazil and is known for its durability and beautiful patterning.

The Gold Leaf, an oblong circular shape cut in various sizes, is the central motif of the JinYe Collection, forming each element of the piece – top, shelf, sides – in a composition that looks spontaneous but is in fact technically very challenging. Like an otherworldly game

The Space Within 存在于内的空间 XiangSheng is a collection of oxidised and brushed bronze furniture that investigates, as much as it celebrates, the interplay between a solid form and the space within and around it. An inspiring take on negative space – a concept that is very present in Asian cultures – and which finds a striking expression through the use of a particularly substantial, solid material like bronze.

XiangSheng I is defined by its verdigris patina, while XiangSheng II features an intensely oxidised bronze finish with a rich brown patina that deepens in hue and communicates a notion of change and life, while the brushed bronze, lining the inner side of its voids, echoes permanence. The XiangSheng II Shelving Unit asserts modularity and f lexibility as it can be used as a partition, a table, or stacked vertically to create a book shelf depending on the space and on the user’s immediate needs. By playing with contrasts, the designers manage to create a form of visual coherence that finds its strength in a symbiotic relationship between opposites – the solid and the void, the physical and the spiritual, the East and the West, the f leeting and the eternal – which only find their true meaning together.

在 融 合 中 法 文 化 背 景 的 明 合 文 吉 眼 中，明 朝 花 瓶 是 最 能 体 现中国 传 统 艺 术 文化 的 典 型设 计 之一 。带 有 细 致 蓝 色 装 饰 图 案 的 经 典 白 瓷 青 花 花 瓶，对 二 人 来 说 是 一 个 设 计 大 前 提，也 是 一 个 激 动 人 心 的 创 意 挑 战 。两 位 设 计 师 运 用 当 代 设 计 理 念 作 出 他 们 的 诠 释，将 最 早 出 现 于 明 朝 ( 1368-1644) 的 白 瓷 青 花 花 瓶，重 新 运 用 创 意 演 绎，赋 予 新 的 外 貌 和 用 途 。BlooMing 看 起 来 犹 如 深 蓝 色 漆 面 陶 瓷 大 花 瓶，里 面 装 上了 拉 丝 黄 铜 制 成 的 垂 直 支 撑，可 以 像 绽 开 的 花 朵 一 样 打 开，变 身 成 柜 子、案 桌 或 灯具，同 时 将 隐 藏 的 纯 白色内面完 美 展 现 。 事 实 上“ 模 块 组 合 性 ”这 个 词 语，并 不 足 以 用 来 贴 切 形 容 BlooMing 展 现 的 非 凡 灵 活 性 。除 了 功 能 上 的 意 义，它 的 视 觉 观 感 变 化 多 端，占 用 空 间 的 方 式 层 出 不 穷 。尽 管 拥 有 百 变 的 造 型，BlooMing 细 腻 地 传 达 的 中 国 情 韵 却 始 终 如 一，万 变 不 离 其 宗 。BlooMing 再 次 印 证 了 明 合 文 吉 敢 于 突 破 常 规，巧 妙 运 用 当 代 设 计 手 法 做 出 破 格 的 作 品，游 走 于 东 西 方 文化 之 间 。

Ming vases are one of the first references that come to mind when thinking about Chinese traditional arts and culture. The classic white porcelain vases with fine imperial blue embellishments were not a prerequisite, but certainly an exciting challenge for the Franco-Chinese designers to take up, and they did so with a very contemporary interpretation. Created during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), this Chinese icon finds new guises and functionalities under Studio MVW’s creative impulse. With its new, deep blue lacquered surface, this ancestral vase form, complemented by a straight brushed brass support, opens up – literally blooms and morphs into either a cabinet, a console, or as a light fixture, revealing the immaculately white secret interior spaces.

Yet the word “modularity” hardly does justice to BlooMing’s remarkable flexibility. Beyond functional terms, the visual possibilities it creates, and its countless ways to occupy space, transform it into a different object every time and yet it is always defined by the essence of its Chineseness, which it delicately communicates. With BlooMing, Studio MV W asserts once again its talent in questioning the memory of forms and overcoming them in a truly contemporary crosscultural approach of East and West.

The collection Giorgetti, made in collaboration with the eponymous Italian brand in 2013, blends function with elegance to create a series of timeless furniture pieces. The collection pairs richly toned walnut wood with subtle details like polished metal, leather cutouts and geometric forms.

Ping, which in Chinese means screen or division, is a bold room divider dominated by a large repetitive circle motif made out of precious Cana letto walnut with a central leather detail. The mirrored edges reflect and refract the surrounding space adding movement to the room in which it stands. Ping, which was awarded an Elle Decoration International Design Award for Best Furniture Design in 2013, not only offers privacy and separation, but it is an artistic object that makes a statement.

Yang, a subtle and poised chest of seven drawers with a circular mirror poised centrally at the top, received a Wallpaper* Design Award in 2014. Yang, meaning sun in Chinese, underscores the designers use of experimentation in the correspondence between form and function.

Music is at the heart of Clair de Lune, a hi-fi cabinet with an integrated sound system and the possibility of Bluetooth connection. Contemporary technology has been discreetly embedded into this refined, modern piece. The cabinet has three interior shelves, two folding doors and a moon-like circular piece of onyx that is softly lit from behind for milky glow.

Born from the idea of the importance of meeting and gathering together around the table, Fang reinforces the fundamental role of the table as piece of furniture to be at the centre of the home or office. It is an object of service and a place of conviviality and discussion.

The perfectly brown walnut top is complemented with leather touches and painted bronze metal. Available as a round or rectangular table.

The intriguing form of the Ryui Coffee Table was inspired by a Chinese talisman that symbolises power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. Although its sleek shape plays off a traditional form, Ruyi feels almost futuristic, while its polished brass and marble surfaces keep it firmly in the world of luxury.

The Louis Ming chair is a sculptural, hand-carved armchair that mixes the elegant, minimal lines of the Ming Dynasty with the comforting embrace of the iconic French Louis XIV chair. This standout piece is a direct fusion of the designers French and Chinese heritage, and a perfect example of how cross-cultural connections create new standards of beauty.

Chunsun, which translates in English as spring bamboo, is a 3-tiered bookcase that consists of branching golden bronze metal tubes and milky-white marble shelves. One idea behind the design was an interest in connecting two materials – a natural one with a manufactured one – to show the harmony that can come between man and nature when done with purpose and intention.
