Body, Site, Program, Structure Pavilion Nov 18, 2020
The goal of the project is to design a pavilion that serves as a communal space for people. The site is the context immediately surrounding Hua Art Museum in Shenzhen, China. The structure of the pavilion is required to be developed using a specific craft operation: slicing and folding. The design process starts with slicingand-folding studies using cardstock at a scale of 1� = 1’. Then twodimensional sheets of cardstock are turned into three-dimensional structure using the developed craft operation. The final presentations are in the form of models made of cut and glued cardstock, alongside a set of Illustrator diagrams and Photoshop collages.

The final pavilion is about 10ft tall and 15ft wide. It is designed to be put in front of Hua Art Museum with the more opening side facing the road. It might serve as a place for people to wait for cars after visiting the museum. It also provide a space for people to rest in shade in summer.

Finding the Essence of Architecture Hua Museum Sept 23, 2020
Hua Museum is designed by a company called URBANUS and is located in Shenzhen, China. The task of this project is to investigate the museum in a analytical and critical way using drawings. The first step is going to the site and observing the building. Vital information of the museum is recorded through hand-drawings and written notations on-site field work. Then the building is further studied in order to achieve a better understanding of it. The final presentations are in the form of a series of analytical drawings and notations.

Hua Museum was originally a warehouse that had belonged to OTC Hotel. When it is being remodeled, the original building structure is basically unchanged and a hexagonal glass curtain wall was added to wrap the entire warehouse.

Formal Organization Cubes Oct 26, 2020
This project is about creating 3D compositions with cubes using approaches of adding and subtracting. The spatial constraint for composition is 10”x10”x10”. There are 12 cubes available one 8” cube, one 6” cube, three 4” cubes, four 3” cubes, and three 1” cubes. The 8” one is solid only and the rest are either solid or void. The project has two part: Exercise A and Exercise B. In Exercise A, the cubes are placed in an orthogonal relationship to one another while, in Exercise B, cubes are placed in a non-orthogonal relationship to one another around the idea of overlapping system.

The Structure of Place Mapping Oct 26, 2020
Everyone has an unique growing-up environment. This project focuses on bringing people back to where they grow up and making them to look at these familiar places thoughtfully through mapping. It contains three analytical plan and section diagrams. The first one is of my hometown which is Jiaxing, China, at a scale of 1” = 3,000’; the second one is of my neighborhood, at a scale of 1” = 300’; and the last one is of my house and yard, at a scale of 1” = 30.

This assignment is an introduction to both precedent research and formal analysis. The team study the San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and present our understanding of it using analytical drawings which shows the building’s underlying grids and geometry.

Grids Rietveld-Schröder House Aug 28, 2020
For this assignment, the elevation of Rietveld-Schröder House is the starting point. A grid is abstracted from the elevation and then a physical wooden model out of linear elements is created based on the grid. The spacial constraint of the model is 10”x10”x10”. The model is an exploration of different ways of ordering space using lines and the implied volumes they create.

Planes Sept 4, 2020
This assignment aims to use planes to sculpt space and establish depth. It is composed of two parts: Lines and Planes, and Continuous Plane. In the first part, planes of Bristol paper are added to the model in the Grids assignment to explore how do the different compositions affect how people read the framework and the space it produces. The second part makes a model out of one piece of 14�x17� Bristol board.

Light & Shadow Sept 11, 2020
This assignment is about exploring the effects of light and shadow. The models from previous assignments are photographed under both direct and diffuse light. Comparing the models in the two different light conditions clearly shows the effect of each light. Charcoal drawings are also made to further study the light and shadow.

“Massing� is often the first step in designing a new architecture project because it can trigger many different ideas and compositions quickly. In this assignment, six different massings from a collection of objects are produced. Each massing starts with three objects placed on the board. Then more objects are added to the composition to convey a certain action.

Transformation Oct 15, 2020
This assignment explores various transformations on a malleable material and how those transformations can remain imprinted on the static form that results. A 2�x2� cube of clay is the starting point. Then a series of actions, including, stretch, rotate, split, carve, pinch, and compress, are applied on the cube in pair of two. In each pair, one action is built on another one and photographs are taken after each action.

This assignment involves collage techniques to study decomposition and re-composition. The study object is Hollyhock House in Los Angeles and Temple of Kukulcรกn is also put in dialogue with it. Elevations of the objects are decomposed into a catalog of component pieces. Then the pieces are put together to form three new compositions, exploring different means of creating relationships or dialogues between parts and different architecture.

This assignment is about fundamentals of color theory. Two photos from previous assignments are selected for this assignment and are turned into color block compositions. The first composition is made using an analogous color palette and the second one is made using a triadic color palette.

In this assignment, skills of close reading, diagramming, and analysis are applied to Lina Bo Bardi’s Glass House. The final presentations are in form of close reading and analytical diagrams of the building.

Close Reading:
Lina Bo Bardi’s Glass House is marked by the style of modernism and simplicity. The architecture is mainly composed of two large rectangles with several small rectangles in them. From the side view, the slanted roof at the top and the sloped hill under half of the house creates to two triangles. The façades of the house are mainly constructed with transparent glass and white concrete. The combination and composition of the two shapes, and the choice of construction material make the house look simple and clean. The thin pilotis under half of the house are almost negligible when being looked from afar. The large portion of voids compared to solids of the architecture, together with the glass and pilotis, make the house look weightless. Moreover, close connection with nature is another important feature of the Glass House. The use of large panes of glass instead of concrete for the southern part of the house minimize the boundary between inside and outside, integrating the house with its surrounding rain forest. The elegant design of courtyard and patio also has the same effect. At the same time, they also allow abundant natural light to get into the house which largely reduce the need for artificial light. The house also has clear separation of public and private space. The southern half is public area, while the northern half is private. The white concrete, contrasting with the glass, used for the wall of the private area ensures privacy. The designed internal circulation delicately use the composition of the two area. People must go through the south part first if they want to enter the north private area. Therefore, the south part with huge transparent glass acts like a transition space, connecting the open nature to the private living space.
