The Heart Of Your Pool The filtration system is the “heart” of your swimming pool. Along with circulation and
sanitation, the job of the filtration system is to keep pool water safe and clean by removing undissolved dirt and debris
that has entered the water via swimmers and the environment. Compromising the “heart” of your pool can lead to more time and money spent on maintenance and less time spent on family fun.
There are three types of filters. Take a closer look at the following options to determine which filtration system will best fit your family’s pool. SAND FILTERS How it works: Of all the types of filters, sand filters have been around the longest. Once water leaves the pool through the skimmer, it travels to the pump which forces the water into a valve. From there, the water is sprayed onto the top of the tank containing coarse grade sand. The impurities are then trapped in the sand and the clean water is collected and sent back to the pool via tubes. Maintenance: Sand filters should be cleaned every 7 to 10 days. First, turn off the pump and switch the dial on the valve to the backwash position. After that, turn the pump back on. This will reverse the flow of water, pushing dirty water back into the valve and through the backwash port where it drains into the yard. After 5 minutes of backwashing, the sight glass will show that the sand is clean. Turn the pump off one last time and switch the valve dial back to the filter position. Lastly, turn the pump back on.

The Heart Of Your Pool cont...
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (D.E.) How it works: D.E. filters are one of the most efficient types of filters on the market. They use D.E. powder along with a series of Polyester/Dacron grids inside the tank to clean the water. Because the D.E. powder used is so fine, these filters catch much more debris than a sand filter. While the pump is running, pre-mix exactly 4 pounds of D.E. powder and pour it into the pool skimmer. From there, the powder mixture travels to the filter tank where it coats the grids. As the water passes through the filter, the powder-coatedgrids trap the dirt and debris. Finally, backwash the filter to get rid of the impurities. Refill the filter with D.E. powder. Maintenance: D.E. filters should be cleaned every 7 to 10 days. First, turn off the pump and “bump” the handle 5 or 6 times to loosen the powder and debris from the grids. Once the debris settles to the bottom of the tank, restart the pump. Next, the system will need to be flushed and recharged. To flush the system, turn off the pump and “bump” the handle 10 to 12 times. Open the waste port and allow waste to exit the system.
ELEMENT FILTERS
How it works: Element (or cartridge) filters are the most low maintenance of all the filter types. Originally, cartridges were made of paper. Now, they are made of polymers, which greatly improve longevity and efficiency. The water is cleaned when it passes through the element material, so no powder or sand is needed. Also, no water is lost from the pool. Maintenance: Since the surface area to be cleaned is smaller, cartridges/elements only need to be cleaned every 3 to 4 weeks. Cleaning the filter is easy. Turn off the pump, spin off the lock ring, and remove the element. Next, rinse the element with your garden hose, and place it back in the tank.

Sanitizers
Sanitize with Chlorine Stabilized chlorine products sanitize your pool water and kill bacteria. Stabilized chlorine products are protected from sunlight degradation and are an ideal means to keep your pool clear and clean. We can determine the best form and type of sanitization for your particular needs to help you maintain a free chlorine level of 1-3 ppm in the pool at all times. Sanitize with Bromine Some people prefer bromine as an alternative to chlorine for pool sanitation. To utilize bromine effectively, an automatic brominator should be installed in your pool.
Oxidizers
Shocking your pool on a regular basis is a critical step in keeping the pool water clear and clean. Swimmers and the environment add waste to the pool that must be eliminated on a regular basis in order to prevent problems such as algae and cloudy water.
Algaecides:
Preventing algae is the key to more fun in your pool. Algaecides act as a backup to your normal sanitization program by preventing algae from growing in the pool. Algaecide should be added after every shock treatment.

WHO should use enzyme products?
The simple answer is EVERYONE! Enzyme products have evolved over the years to a point in which there are specific products based upon the needs of each and every body of water. That’s why “everybody” should use them.
WHAT are enzymes?
Enzymes break down non-living organics such as lotion, sunscreen, body oils and more in a natural way. They break them down piece by piece, until there is little left other than water and air. When you think of it, enzymes are a commonly discussed item in many other industries, including health and wellness (enzymes in our stomachs), beauty products (enzymes in a facial peel), and even at-home maintenance (enzymes in septic and drain cleaners). Enzymes are everywhere, so why not use them in a pool or spa?
WHERE should enzymes be added?
You should select an enzyme product for the body of water for which it was formulated. The needs of a spa and a pool may differ based on the scope of non-living organic contaminants that they both experience. Whereas spas deal heavily with hair products, lotions, and other waste factors, pools deal with those plus environmental factors. Enzyme products are designed differently based upon their intended application.
WHEN are enzymes supposed to be added?
Enzymes can (and really should) be used primarily as a maintenance product in addition to your regular sanitizer and balancing efforts. It is okay to dose enzymes while bathers are present, so think of it like you are cleaning up in the heat of the party. As non-living organics (lotion, hair products, sunscreen, etc) are being added to your water, you can be breaking them down as you go instead of waiting for them to build up and cause issues in your filter, with water clarity, or at the waterline. Another opportunity in which enzymes can help is to be used as a problem solving product. This is one we hope you never have to use, but enzymes work very well in the unlikely event that your pool is vandalized.
WHY should I really use enzymes?
The bottom line is that you should use enzymes to make your swimming pool or spa maintenance easier. When you use enzymes as a part of your maintenance program, the benefits that you will see are increased filter run cycles (less filter cleaning for you), the reduction of waterline rings and superior water quality with less work!

3-Step System
Owning a swimming pool should be a fun & enjoyable experience. Maintaining clean and sparkling pool water can be easily achieved by following a simple, 3-step system. Proven over time, pool chemical systems work in synergy, ensuring your pool remains properly sanitized, stays crystal clear and is free of annoying algae blooms. Simply put, maintaining a sanitizer level, providing a weekly shock treatment and adding an algaecide are three easy steps to assuring a clean and inviting swimming pool. ®
Sanitizing your pool is Step 1 in your 3-Step system. Your sanitizer protects swimmers from harmful pathogens, like bacteria and viruses, which can cause a number of health issues. This step is usually accomplished by the addition of chlorine tablets or sticks into your feeder, floater or skimmer basket. Of these three methods, the use of an in-line chlorine feeder allows for the most control of your level of sanitizer. The tablets slowly erode, providing a constant level of sanitizer to the pool water. Adjusting the chlorine level is as effortless as changing the water flow through the feeder by opening or closing the control valve. Chlorine levels should be maintained in the 1 - 4 ppm range. Testing for chlorine is easily done with the use of test strips. The chlorine level of the water should be tested several times per week during the swimming season, ensuring the pool has an adequate sanitizer level. New tablets or sticks are added as needed, based upon the weather and pool usage. Hot, sunny weather and higher bather loads will normally require using more chlorine tablets or sticks. Also, your pool water should be completely analyzed monthly with your local pool professional, so other important factors, like total alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid, can be tested and adjusted properly. Step 2 in your 3-Step system is shocking the pool water weekly. While your pool is being used, it will experience a build-up of contaminants. Examples of this include urine, perspiration, oils, lotions and wind-blown debris. If this material is allowed to remain in the pool, you will probably encounter issues like dull, cloudy water, noticeable odors and your sanitizer will have a much harder time doing its job of keeping the pool safe for use. You can easily remove these contaminants, as well as restore water sparkle, by simply using a weekly shock treatment. This is accomplished by adding a granular chlorine product directly to the pool. Shock treatments break down the

contaminants and eliminate them from the water, ensuring water clarity and freeing up your chlorine to fight bacteria. Shocking the pool should be done in the evening (after the sun is off the pool) and after swimming is done for the day. The pool cover should also be left off of the pool overnight, allowing the broken down contaminants to release into the atmosphere. The pool should be “swim ready” the following day. The use of a weekly algaecide is Step 3 in your 3-Step system. A small amount of algaecide does a very good job of controlling algae before it has a chance to multiply and cause pool problems. The algaecide is there to defend the pool so your chlorine is available to kill bacteria. Without an algaecide, your chlorine must work harder in the water to protect the pool from both bacteria and algae. Also, during times where your chlorine level may drop below recommended levels, the algaecide is available to control any algae that find its way into the pool. We know we cannot keep algae out of the pool, so it makes sense to add a weekly algaecide to prevent any unwelcome (and expensive) algae blooms. It is a small price to pay to ensure clear, clean, algae-free water.
Maintaining your pool with a 3-Step system is trouble-free, convenient and cost effective. It is always less expensive to prevent pool problems than it is to take care of them after they occur.
