his month we officially bid a fond farewell to spring and welcome in the, fingers crossed, barmy British summertime. It’s also that time of year we celebrate the best of British and all things family. We visit the Chief Operating Officer from Chester Zoo, Jamie Christon at both work and home (p.022) to see what makes him tick. Craig Hough sits down with Michael Johnson-Ellis to discuss his same-sex surrogacy journey (p.026). We chat to the rising star Reece Noi on his career in the UK, his move to the US and his new Netflix series (p.031). While in the world of fashion, we take a look at bold and beautiful prints in Weekend Max Mara’s Nantucket collection (p.042). From fashion to food, the quintessentially British Sunday Roast is one of our most popular dishes, so we sent the team out to sample some of the best in the region (p.069).
Family is at the core of us here at the magazine, this month we profile some of the professionals who can lend a hand to your family in times of need (p.095) and we zip off to Portugal (p.080), the Palm Springs of the Algarve for some R&R with Matt Hawtin Roper, uncovering the wellness retreat that is the incredible Quinta do Lago. We also have a fabulous new design for you in our Home section, still bringing you the very latest trends and inspiration, but we felt it was time for us to re-decorate. We hope that you like it. We are particularly in love with the bold wallpapers (p.116), step back in time and focus on the terrazzo trend (p.121) and discover who are the ones to watch in the world of interiors (p.114). Next month we are stepping outside and embark on outdoor entertaining in the sunshine. Summer is finally upon us, so kick back, relax and enjoy the read!

My life in
CHESHIRE ANDREW TALLENTS, HEAD OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AT ORCID PARTNERSHIP, THE CHESHIRE BASED AWARD WINNING SENIOR EXECUTIVE AND NON-EXECUTIVE SEARCH AND LEADERSHIP CONSULTANCY
How would you describe yourself ? I am passionate about enabling a wide range of people to realise their potential as human beings. With my job being in leadership development it means I spend most of my time with Chief Executives and senior Board members however I also try to work with others to try and improve social mobility within the UK and support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their dreams. I love walking and playing a wide range of competitive sports. Where is home? work? I live in West Kirby on the Wirral and spend most of my time either at the Orcid Partnership offices in central Chester or working with clients in the Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater London regions. What did you want to be when you were younger? When I was younger I wanted to be a professional snooker player but despite a misspent youth in the snooker halls of Macclesfield I couldn’t emulate Nick Dyson who was playing locally in those days. I still play today and still don’t find it any easier! Name a few of your favourite places to be... I am lucky to live in West Kirby and I try and spend as much time there as possible. I love the beach and the outdoors life. I also have Royal Liverpool Golf Club on the doorstep and I am fortunate to be a member there. When I am not working or with the family you can find me on the links at Hoylake! When I’m not with clients I enjoy taking time out from the offices are enjoying a walk along the River Dee and seeing if there is any activity at Chester Racecourse. What / who inspires you? People in all walks of life who want to become the best versions of themselves to be able to help others within their
“I am passionate about enabling a wide range of people to realise their potential as human beings” organisations and their communities inspire me the most. They show courage, benevolence and vulnerability in order to build trust with the most important people in their lives. Mahatma Gandhi is one of those people that sets the standard and we can all learn from the way he lived his life. What was the last gift you gave someone? I might regret this but my wife and I have just bought our ten year old daughter a cavapoo puppy. He has just been born and arrives in a few weeks. Our family has no experience of having dogs so it will be a learning experience for all of us. I know that this is a gift that over the next twelve years will have an expensive price tag! Tell us a secret/fun fact? I once jumped out of an aeroplane at 10000 feet for charity and only told my daughter and mother about it once I had landed. I remember the ice crystals in the air hitting my face on the way down. I wanted to do it again straight away but once the adrenalin had stopped pumping I thought better of it. Who or what would you place in room 101? I am frustrated with western politics and the lack of choice of leaders we have to change our world for the better. I would put all politicians that have lied to the electorate in room 101 to give upcoming political leaders a chance to inspire younger voters. What’s been your biggest life lesson? When I was growing up I needed to work hard and not rely on other people. It is only recently that I have learned to trust that other people are willing to support and help me achieve my dreams and as a consequence I am now helping others achieve theirs. Being honest about what you don’t know and where you need help can make all the difference in being successful in life. www.orcid.co.uk

Q&A with Manchester Arena General Manager James Allen What is it about Manchester that you love? Manchester has everything, even more so now than when I first returned. The growth in fabulous restaurants, hotels and some of the best music venues in the country; if not the world, is all combined with the Cheshire countryside only minutes from my front door. I first came to the region in the early nineties as a student at Salford University, making the most of the fantastic music and club scene. Witnessing the Arena coming out of the ground at Victoria Station in the early 90s, I left Manchester at the end of my studies vowing to return to this amazing city as soon as possible. How long have you worked at Manchester Arena as General Manager? It’s 16 years now - the opportunity to return to Manchester came in 2003 when I was appointed to the role of the Director of Events at Manchester Arena. I was promoted to General Manager in 2013 and I have had the utmost pleasure in leading a very skilled and dedicated team in bringing the best in world-class entertainment to the people of Manchester and beyond. Working at an arena is not a normal job and to succeed you need to be willing to work hard and approach each event with enthusiasm, intrigue and passion. Using your breadth of experience to deal with any situations that may arise. What does a typical day look like for you? What I love about my role is the variety and pace, every day is different and so there is no such thing as a typical day. I could be working on events that we don’t stage for at least a year or welcoming guests to the arena to an event that has been in the planning for an equally long time. I might be working with my operational team on developing our customer experiences or working with our chef and enjoying tasting the new season’s menu for our Prime Experience customers. It’s great on a show night to welcome and talk to both the super fans who know everything about their idols and our regular customers who come for the live entertainment and who return many times each year.
The Arena has put on some amazing events throughout the years, what has been a personal highlight? I have had the pleasure of witnessing some of the best performers in the world. It is the variety of those acts over the years that is so exciting; the best bands, solo artists, comedy acts and sports stars, it is difficult to single anyone out. Landmark events that spring to mind are the Ricky Hatton World Title win against Kostya Tszyu which took place in the early hours of the morning for a global TV audience. Finally having Prince play here was a huge thrill for me as we had a number of false starts as he used to favour smaller, more intimate city venues on previous visits to Manchester. However, being able to get him at short notice to the arena was a huge achievement for everyone involved and was well worth the wait. Manchester nights are always special when we are able to stage a home town gig for returning heroes such as James, Take That and The Courteeners or giving the next set of Manchester superstars such as The 1975 a night on our stage to celebrate their success with friends and family. Many people buy tickets to the Arena as birthday presents or corporate treats for their team or clients. Why would you suggest people look into your Prime Experience; what’s on offer for them? Manchester Arena has something for everyone, a great track record of bringing the best in live entertainment year on year, with a packed calendar of events, I’d challenge anyone not to find something that doesn’t appeal. It is rare that I meet people that tell me that they haven’t been to an event at the arena but those who haven’t been or haven’t been for a while I encourage them to see their favourite artists as soon as they can, for example, Elton John has planned his final shows in Manchester in 2020, a real coup for the city and a show that’s not to be missed. Our Prime Experience is the ultimate upgrade in live entertainment experience. It allows you to make a great night even better, whether it’s for a special family treat, rewarding your staff or sealing the deal for some new business, we have a Prime package to suit your needs direct from us so that you can be confident that you and your guests will have an experience to remember.

Baluchi. The LaLit London
Afternoon Teas More than 150 years after the seventh Duchess of Bedford began serving a meal between lunch and dinner, the afternoon tea continues to be a popular British tradition
Baluchi is the pan-Indian dining destination within The LaLiT London, offering dining with a difference. Set in the historic Grade II-listed hotel’s Great Hall, reminiscent of its former existence as 19th Century St. Olave’s Grammar School’s assembly hall, Baluchi is exquisite and decadent. Restored vaulted ceilings and magnificent Hyderabadi hand-crafted, deep cobalt, glass chandeliers warm the space and large windows allow natural light to flood the restaurant. Enjoy an alternative High Chai afternoon tea which balances traditional English favourites with a signature Indian twist, with unique treats including Chooza Pakoda and Punjabi samosas, alongside mango lassi, a selection of teas, or accompanied by a glass of champagne. www.thelalit.com
Thornton Hall The Chester Grosvenor Served daily at The Chester Grosvenor since 1882, the tradition of ‘taking tea’ has been enjoyed by many since its launch and is long established as being the finest afternoon tea in Chester. The afternoon tea includes a selection of hand-made sandwiches, freshly baked plain and fruit scones served with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, finished off with an assortment of home-made French pastries and fancies. The Chester Grosvenor has recently introduced the Taittinger Champagne Flight so you can enjoy a tasting of three Taittinger Champagnes to add an extra feeling of decadence to your afternoon tea. Each Champagne offered as a 100ml tasting is carefully selected to accompany each tier of your afternoon tea. www.chestergrosvenor.com 20
Having won the award for ‘Best Tasting Afternoon Tea of the Year’ in 2018, the luxurious 4* hotel situated in the heart of the Wirral countryside, is hoping to fight off fierce competition to once again take home a title at the Afternoon Tea of the Year Awards later in the year. Enjoy a wide range of finger sandwiches, jam and scones, sweets and a selection of loose leaf tea in luxury surroundings. www.thorntonhallhotel.com
Here’s Looking
Zoo!
at
Craig Hough chats to Chester Zoo COO Jamie Christon about his life, career, the infamous fire and the overwhelming support he received in the aftermath Background
I’m originally from Northallerton, a market town in North Yorkshire which left when I was 18 to go to university in Leicester to read Politics and Public Order (as I wanted to join the police). I was accepted on a fast track scheme, but their recruitment was delayed, so I took up my other passion for retail, and my first real job was for a supermarket company in Frodsham, Cheshire. Having moved to London, I spent another eight years working in retail in for House of Fraser and Greggs. I enjoyed living in London as a young 25-year-old, and that’s where I let my hair down for a few years going out in Brixton and the West End.
Career Path
I was Head Hunted by East Midlands Airport (Manchester Airport Group) at a time when low-cost airlines were booming. The model was to sell flights at a lower price at volume and to recoup the income from passengers at the airport from retail, car parking and food and beverage. It’s here where I met my future husband, who was the PR Manager. Within a few weeks of meeting, he had moved into my house, and we spent 11 years together. My old MD at Manchester Airport messaged to say he had joined another airport company in the South West, so I moved down to Devon, living on Dartmoor for five beautiful years in a conservation village, where we had the most fantastic time. As keen gardeners, we had a beautiful rose garden that looked out onto Dartmoor which we opened 22
up to the public each year, with all donations going to charity. I worked at Exeter Airport as Managing Director, and when the recession hit I realised that living in Devon wasn’t sustainable career-wise. This prompted my decision to move back north as a director for Stena Line managing their Irish Sea operations in Anglesey. It was a beautiful place to live in the summer, but a difficult place to live in the winter months with the climate and not much to do there.
Moving Back To Chester
I moved to Chester to be closer to Manchester Airport (as i was travelling a lot), and I was sitting
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature
“We are the most engaged with zoo in the world” at home one Sunday reading The Times, and there was an advertisement for a vacancy of Managing Director of Chester Zoo. They were looking for someone with a commercial background, so I applied, and six years later, I’m still here. I now live 10 minutes away from work in a beautiful Victorian villa in Hoole with my dog Patch, who is my baby. I get the opportunity to travel to many places around the world to see what we are doing as a conservation organisation. I love living in Chester and wouldn’t live anywhere else.
38 messages in a minute! I went to my phone and contacted the Duty Manager who said smoke and fire were coming from a building. While I was on the phone, I went upstairs in my house, and out of the window I could see the smoke and flames, and I live about 2 miles away from the zoo. Within half an hour, I had 20 Managers from the Zoo and the emergency response team on site, and we started organising what was going to happen. In the end, we had 15 fire engines from 3 different counties and 100 firefighters tackling the flames along with our emergency response team. We had category red animals in that building, so we had to ensure they were protected, as well as our staff, the public and firefighters.
Love For The City
Chester is not too big; it’s not too small, I regard it as a safe place to live, with a personality. I know lots of people in the city and feel living in a bigger city can be quite unwelcoming or unfriendly. If I want to go to places like Manchester, Liverpool or London, it’s a train journey away. Chester is close to a large airport if I need to get away. It has a race course, a great university, beautiful Roman architecture and the river.
The Fire At Chester Zoo
It was a typical Saturday and had planned to go to Manchester with some friends for a night out. My phone is linked to all the fire alarms at work, and at about half-past 11, I was in the lounge, and I could hear my phone messaging me. I think I had
Dealing With The Media Glare
As the Zoo was open, within a couple of minutes of the fire starting, it was on social media. Within half an hour it was across the national news. We have an amazing PR team, and the entire team came to work, so they could manage the PR, allowing me to manage the crisis. We didn’t do any media interviews that day to enable me to concentrate on what I needed to do. The next day we were on BBC, ITV, Sky News, all the regionals and even abroad as well.
The Outpouring Of Support
We had people contact the zoo by phone, by email and social media, offering 23
Feature | The CHESHIRE Magazine
support. People were saying ‘can we help?’ ‘Can we give money?’ ‘Can we house animals?’. Other zoos around the UK and organisations were also in contact to offer support. We have a large team at the zoo, so physically, we were able to manage the situation. In terms of giving money, we opened a Just Giving page and were amazed at just how many people offered support. Over two weeks this rose to a quarter of a million pounds, which we are now spending on conservation projects associated with the species that were inside the zoo at the time, as well as new facilities when that area of the zoo is reopened. In terms of business continuity, we were very sensitive about what happened at the zoo, but as an organisation, we wanted to make sure that we could reopen as soon as we could. We have 125,000 members and many wanted to come and offer support and lend a hand, and we re-opened the next day. It was one the darkest days that the zoo has had in its 86 year history.
Response From His Team
Our animal teams were fantastic, in terms of ensuring many species within that building were saved and looked after. Many of the primate team stayed overnight for the first few nights until we sure all the animals were safe. We are a very passionate organisation, and we had probably
about 100 staff appear during that day, in their various roles and helped do their job. Some of those people were making tea and coffee for the emergency service people. Some of them were managing the extraction of the animals in that building to ensure they were safe, and their welfare standards were maintained, moving them to a different part of the zoo. Some were dealing with crisis comms or managing the operation of the zoo. Everyone pulled their weight as expected, and that would happen at any Chester Zoo event. We have a well-rehearsed crisis management process that we practice every few months, so we were fully prepared.
A Typical Work Day
A typical day is probably made up of many meetings about the many projects we currently have ongoing at the zoo. As well as the operations of the zoo on a day-to-day basis, making sure the zoo maximises its visitation and value to the
“I love living in Chester and wouldn’t live anywhere else” community through guest experience and also food and beverage/retail sales, on top of all the events going on. Myself and the Chief Executive probably speak at least a dozen times a day. I also try and find time to go into the zoo and talk to the staff as well as customers. Staff engagement is critical to us, and we were lucky to be named one of the Sunday Times’ Top 100 Not-For-Profit best places to work.
The Zoo’s Reputation
Chester is the UK’s most visited zoo with attendance last year at 1.96 million. People come because of our reputation and our membership. What we find is people enjoy us because we are a big park, and people can come and have a good day out, but also learn about conservation. About 12% of Cheshire West and Chester residents are 24
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars
members of the zoo, which is a large number, and we have tripled that number in the last six years from 42,000 to 122,000 which is mainly due to the team at the zoo our reputation and Secret Life of the Zoo, the Channel 4 TV series. We have a reputation of being a professional, scientific organisation that does fantastic work in conservation, both for the zoo and around the world. We concentrate six significant hotspots of diversity, across the globe, where we focus our projects. We are the most engaged with zoo in the world. In terms of experience, we are developing the zoo into creating intimate, immersive experiences for our customers, so they can see things that are different throughout the year (our members on average visit 5-6 times a year). Our mission is Preventing Extinction. An example of this is working with Bermuda Skinks. Our team, led by Dr Gerardo Garcia, have been working to conserve and breed this species and eventually return them to the wild. We went out to Bermuda and brought the skinks back to the UK as we were asked by the government to conserve that species, which can now be found at the zoo.
New Accommodation At The Zoo
We have applied for planning permission to build a 42 room overnight accommodation. It’s a series of rigid tents in a bachelor giraffe paddock, with several lodges around a lake. We are working with a South African hotel company that we have engaged with for two years now, who manage and own some lodges and hotels in and around wildlife reserves. We have always been seen as a 2-day
attraction, and the hotel will allow people to stay overnight. This will enable visitors to do extraordinary things; such as early morning tours of the zoo, nocturnal tours of the zoo and things that our regular visitors don’t see. If we are successful with planning permission this will open in the summer of 2022, as part of our larger Grasslands scheme.
Love For The Job
I love the people I work with. The environment I work in and being in an office building that sits on the side of 125 acres of beautiful parkland. Getting to see animals every day never gets boring. Everyone at the zoo (the staff, the trustees, the volunteers) all love what they do.
How To Unwind At The Weekend
On a typical weekend, I like to socialise with my friends, with my favourite haunts being Bar Lounge and Opera Grill. I do like spending time at home with my dog on a Saturday morning, one of my favourite coffee shops is Jaunty Goat on Bridge Street, where I’ll go for breakfast and coffee and watch the world go by. www.chesterzoo.org 25
WHO’S THE
Daddy?
Craig Hough sits down with the founder of twodaddies.co.uk Michael Johnson-Ellis to discuss his same-sex surrogacy journey When did you and partner Wes start to consider becoming parents via surrogacy? It was pretty early on in our relationship, Wes has a 15-year-old daughter with his ex-wife and I’ve also been married to a woman previously. For me I’ve always wanted children, I’ve just never been in the right relationship to have them. When I first met Wes back in June 2012 we had the conversation very early on in our relationship and I remember asking him if he wanted more, hoping he was as keen as I was. Luckily he felt the same and we pretty much started exploring surrogacy straight away.
What did you already know about same-sex surrogacy in the UK and what did you do to find out more? Back when Wes and I met we knew very little about surrogacy generally. Our perception back then was that UK surrogacy wasn’t even an option for gay men in the UK, but we were clearly wrong. We spent over 3 years researching all our options, internationally and in the UK. We even travelled abroad and attended numerous international fertility exhibitions. We explored India, Thailand, Nepal, US, Canada and Mexiconone of which felt right for us, either due to our sexuality, the cost or their experience generally. We finally decided to explore the UK so we contacted the three main not-for-profit agencies that support intended parents and surrogates. We quickly discovered that none of the main three at that period in time (2014) were taking new applications from same-sex male intended parents due
26
to overwhelming numbers of intended parents and not enough surrogates. Based on the knowledge we had thus far and from what we’d learnt from Surrogacy UK (our favoured not-forprofit) we decided to conduct more research into UK surrogacy. First, we needed to understand the law so we met one of the UK’s leading surrogacy law experts Bev Jones from JMW Law in Liverpool and we began to understand the Surrogacy Act in a lot more detail and how we had to work within the current guidelines. This is partly why we set up TwoDads.U.K, because there isn’t an organisation that exclusively supports intended fathers (and fertility clinics) with UK surrogacy.
Can you talk me through the process of finding a surrogate? If you use one of the not-for-profits they will have surrogates that register with them, just as intended parents do. For those that want an independent route, there are some excellent closed community Facebook groups which allow surrogates and intended parents

to get to know each other and hopefully ‘match’ with a view to creating a family. It’s important to realise that it is illegal in the UK currently to advertise for a surrogate. A surrogate can’t be paid commercially for carrying a child, they are currently only allowed to claim reasonable expenses which vary depending on the surrogate and her circumstances. Our process was fairly straightforward. We began talking to women who wanted to become surrogates, and really only ever met with our current surrogate as it felt right. It’s really important that friendships are established first and foremost. We spent almost 10 months getting to know our surrogate and her family before we started fertility treatment. Once the relationship was formed we chose a fertility clinic in Manchester (Care Fertility) as they had experience of same-sex surrogacy and could find us an egg donor that matched our criteria. Two/three months later they found our donor and then we were ready to begin treatment.
You have a gorgeous little girl called Talulah, how was the experience of having your first child with Wes? It literally was the most magical day of my life. As Talulah was being born by elective C-Section you can only have one person in theatre. This means that for parents who have a child via surrogacy, one parent may end up missing the birth of their child. We decided that if only one of us could see our child born, then neither of us would. We’re working on ways to change this behind the scenes to make it less discriminatory. It was also important that our surrogate was comfortable, so having her husband hold her hand was the most obvious and sensible option. We waited for our surrogate’s husband to bring our baby into a side room of the delivery ward. He knocked on the door but we could see no baby. Panic set in but he simply said ‘Get some scrubs on and come watch your baby being born’. Even saying it now, I still cry, it was totally
unexpected and so overwhelming. So at 06:00 on the 16/10/16 we witnessed Talulah enter the world, weighing 8lb exactly.
What challenges have you faced through surrogacy? We’ve had a very straight forward experience. Don’t get me wrong we get the odd stare or the odd ‘troll’ comment on Facebook or Instagram, but again, that’s why we’re raising more awareness about same-sex parenting. We did have one small bump in the road with the NHS Trust when we went for our 20 week consultant appointment. The hospital had never had a surrogacy journey before, so their policy was outdated and all based on the guidance available at the time. We had to involve our lawyer and issue an intent to sue letter, as the Trust were discriminating against us. However, the Trust were more than amicable and we managed to resolve the issues without the need to sue. Since our journey, we’ve assisted the Department of Health re-write its guidelines for Surrogates and IP’s (Intended Parents) for Healthcare Professionals
“We wanted to help combine our lived experience with our knowledge and share our network of experts.” 27
What support have you and Wes had through your surrogacy journey and how has that helped? As part of the HFEA guidelines (the governing body for UK fertility clinics), you have to receive counselling when embarking on this type of treatment so we had emotional support. In terms of other external support, we received nothing apart from our amazing friends and family. There isn’t an organisation that exclusively supports intended fathers with this type of UK treatment, and that why we blogged and set up our Instagram and Facebook account @TwoDads.U.K.
How has your life changed since becoming a father? It’s busier! Time seems to fly much quicker, I’m more patient and less selfish. Being a Dad has made me a better, more tolerate human that’s for sure. We’ve had some great opportunities too, back in October 2017 we got to appear in a Sainsbury’s Christmas ad (the singalong one), and then shortly after we appeared in a Channel Four documentary with Kieron Richardson (Gay Dads Forever) which looked at our journey to become fathers. In Summer 2018 we filmed an advert for Audi as part of their Future Families campaign, and we’ve just filmed an online advert for a major international communications brand
28
which will be released in August. It all helps raise more awareness around same-sex families and shows families are created differently from how they were 40 years ago.
What led you to set up the twodaddies website and what is the overall mission? The fact that no one was really supporting intended fathers exclusively and the fact information on surrogacy in the UK is hard to find. We wanted to help combine our lived experience with our knowledge and share our network of experts. We have eight other missions listed on the website which include working with the APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) on the Surrogacy Law Reform. We were asked to visit the Houses of Parliament in October 2018 to provide our account of being fathers through UK Surrogacy. We’re also working on greater access for baby changing in male bathrooms, NHS Funding for fertility treatment for gay men, supporting UK clinics with their intended father caseloads, ensuring fair and equal treatment of surrogates and intended parents with NHS Hospitals (especially when children

are born via C-Section). You can check out the other missions on our website.
As a strong advocate for same-sex surrogacy, what more have you done to raise awareness? Apart from the previously mentioned media campaigns, we were asked this year to speak at the Royal College of Nursing’s Fertility Nurses event to help educate them about our journey, and the correct terminology to use etc. We also got invited to speak at this year’s amazing Fertility Fest which was held at The Barbican in London. We were involved in their Queer Family Day and presented on stage in a TED-style presentation titled ‘Who’s The Daddy’, about all the things people feel it’s appropriate to ask two men with a child. And in June 2019 we’re on the cover for Fertility Road, which was the UK first featuring a gay male couple. We’re also so proud to now be writing with them, talking about parenting and fertility and infertility issues.
Swimmer Tom Daley recently stated in an interview “The laws here in the UK don’t necessarily protect the surrogate or the intended parents and it’s not that regulated in the same way that it is in the States”. What more needs to be done to modify the law and how do we get there? Tom and Dustin are correct in the sense that the laws need a reform, which is exactly what is
1. Understand thoroughly the types of surrogacy arrangements that exist such as Traditional Surrogacy and Gestational Surrogacy and the possible impact of each journey. 2. Do your research into clinics and their success rates for fresh and frozen embryo transfers 3. Check which clinics are experienced in same-sex surrogacy and what does their support package look like for intended fathers? 4. Explore the costs thoroughly and look into each eventuality should you have failed transfers 5. Consider carefully who out of the two of you (if partnered) will ‘go first’ as this can often be a tricky topic Don’t ever lose hope, keep chasing that dream to become parents, and if in doubt, contact us via Instagram and Facebook @TwoDads.uk or our website www.twodaddies.co.uk.
currently happening - and we’re working with the APPG Surrogacy Law Reform Commission, by providing our feedback with how the law should change. The US has commercial surrogacy arrangements in some States, but overwhelmingly here in the UK surrogates have said they don’t want those types of agreements. Surrogacy in the UK is altruistic, and it’s motivated by love and friendship and not money. The Law in the UK currently identifies the surrogate as the legal parent at birth, until you apply for your parental order which can’t be submitted to the courts until the child is 6 weeks and 1 day old. It then takes around 10 weeks to be granted the legal parent of the child. We’d like to see that laws change so that the legal parents are in fact the intended parents from birth - like in the States. We’ve already seen a change in January 2019 allowing for single people to apply for parental orders and we hope to see the current 1985 Surrogacy Act replaced with something more current and reflective of modern family life.
Finally, with all the joy little Talulah has brought into your lives, is there a pitter-patter of more tiny feet planned for your future? There is indeed, we’ve always wanted more children. We had a failed IVF transfer last summer which was a real blow, but after a 3-month break we transferred another embryo in December 2018 and we’re super excited to be having a boy, due at the end of August. www.twodaddies.co.uk

From the
North to Netflix Craig Hough talks to actor Reece Noi about his career in the UK, his move to the US and his new Netflix series
This year you are celebrating an incredible 20 years in the television industry at the tender age of 30. How did your first role come about? I always knew I wanted to tell stories and did. I don’t recall ever wanting to be famous as such but I think I liked being able to command
attention and make people feel some type of way. I would beg my mum to find drama classes and after a few fairly fruitless local classes someone told her about David Johnson Drama School. So she took me there every Saturday at the crack of dawn and after a few months David pulled ‘Mummy’ aside and told her he wanted to start suggesting me for roles. I joined the agency and got my first audition. I did a commercial and then came ‘Seeing Red’. I think it was three rounds of recalls and such but I booked the role of Wayne and shot it over the summer of ‘99. In Cheshire actually! You have worked on some of the biggest UK series over the years, from Grange Hill and Waterloo Road, to more grittier dramas such as Silk and Father and Son. Which role did you enjoy the most and what do you most get recognised for? Well I enjoy different roles for different reasons. I still always love a short film I shot in 2010 named ‘Friday’ simply because the team were so great and it looks beautiful. We shot on film which is such a novelty now I think it captures life so differently. It’s richer! I really miss film. Am I ageing myself here? I loved Father & Son because it still remains the role I had with the most journey. Hit & Miss was special because it kind of changed my life on a personal level but I would say I’m definitely still mostly recognised for Waterloo Road.

You also had a role in Game of Thrones, the biggest show on television. How was your time filming in Northern Ireland and Croatia? Were you sad to see the show finish last month? I think it is sad but then at the same time nothing lasts forever and it means that all those people both behind and in front of the camera can go off and explore some more. I used to really struggle to say goodbye to jobs. Starting with Seeing Red. I woke my mum at 5am the day after wrap crying that I ‘had nothing to look forward to anymore’. I was a dramatic kid! I thankfully have since learnt how in order for new things to come in you have to create space. Back to Game of Thrones, I had a ball! I went in for a couple of scenes and they wrote me into the following season and I feel really lucky for that. For a show so vast it felt so close knit and I laughed all day every day. I do miss that shoot! Whilst living in Manchester you had a stint alongside Rochdale born Maxine Peak in A Street Car Named Desire at Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre. Having spent most of your career in television how was the experience performing in front of a live audience? I love theatre because it’s a different experience with the team. We all muck in and do all kinds of different things. We’re forced to get to know each other really intimately. A few weeks rehearsals, shared dressing rooms, green rooms and that doesn’t happen always in TV & Film. Then you get to feel the audiences tension, their anger and sadness. The show is interactive, whether you want that or not. it depends on who is in the crowd and how much you can engage them. That is really exciting. It is instant response to something. A play often changes so much throughout its run as you adapt to the audiences reactions.

Having spent the majority of your younger life living in the North of England where are some of your favourite places to go? My favourite places in the North is without doubt Oldham St, Manchester. I love that street and everyone on it. That whole block was my stomping ground and I have so many fond memories and friends there. I also used to love jumping on the train to Hebden Bridge for a day. Of course I have a few friends down in Alderley too, I would go and have a day at The Yard, which is no longer there but was owned by former Waterloo Road actress Sadie Pickering. That was my spot. I like cake. You are now flying the British flag living over in LA, having moved to America in 2007. After finding so much success over here in the UK what made you make the move? Sadly I moved because it became imperative. I had always loved working in the UK and particularly the North, I had never been one of those actors that had Hollywood hopes but the work just stopped coming. I never thought I would like it but it’s the best thing I ever did. I think, for now at least I am absolutely where I am supposed to be.

You star in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us (which was realised worldwide on Netflix May 31st). Talk to me about your role and what the four-part series is about? So this is an interesting story. I started following Ava on Twitter a couple of years ago and she announced she was making the story of The Central Park Five, (as they were then referred to) and I responded that I thought it was amazing she was doing so. Then forgot all about it. In late Spring 2018 I got a phone call asking me to go and meet Miss Ava DuVernay and I knew immediately what it was for. We met, and she liked me. Eventually I read for three different characters and did a chemistry read with another actor before she called me and asked me to play Matias Reyes. Honestly, despite knowing how important this project was, I was
your lifestyle changed? What do you do to unwind? I am absolutely more relaxed than I have ever been despite the fact that I actually had a few bumps in the road. There is an energy here that forces you to slow down and really respect the process. For me at least. I love to do all the cliché things, I hike regularly, do lots of yoga (I did love yoga in Manchester though). I think LA has all of my favourite things. Healthy food, fitness and spirituality. I think the optimism here as always really changed me beneficially.
“I always knew I wanted to tell stories” Now you are living in Hollywood can we expect a film in your immediate future? I actually recently got back from a stint in Sydney shooting a feature film named Unsound. Its a love story primarily about a young gay musician (me) who returns to Sydney to his mother after being raised in Manchester and meets Finn (played by Yiana Pandelis), a trans guy still trying to figure out his own journey and they fall in love. The film follows them and their ensuing struggle. It’s filled with heart so I hope it’s well received. They’re hoping to get that out to the late Summer festivals and we shall see what happens from there. Twitter: @ReeceNoi
sceptical. Matias is the man who actually committed the heinous crime and I wanted to be on the right side of this story. I realised that there isn’t a wrong side though because this story is being told with the voices of the five boys who were arrested and forced to confess to the crime they didn’t commit: Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Kevin Richardson. The series tells the story of how five innocent young boys were rounded up and framed for a crime they didn’t commit by people and a system that was supposed to protect them. I’m really proud to be a part of it. Since giving up your life in the North of England for sunny California, how has

INNER STRENGTH
PILATES
Richard Greenhalgh wakes up early to review Inner Strength Pilates in Knutsford
A
typical male response to Pilates – sounds a bit easy, not sure it will really be a challenge – trust me, after an hour with Lisa at Inner Strength Pilates in Knutsford, I am rapidly put right! I arrive to a fantastic upstairs location in the heart of Knutsford that you would never believe existed if you hadn’t been there. There is an innate sense of calm in the room but despite this lying on the floor are six “machines” the likes of which I’ve never seen before, but more on this later. My instructor Lisa is exceptionally welcoming and gives me the low down on what I am going to be doing for the next hour, glancing over her shoulder at the machines, which I now know are called “Reformers” and which were
50
invented by the creator of the Pilates movement, Joseph Pilates. Lisa, is a former journalist, turned Pilates instructor and it is clear that her change of career is driven by her love and devotion for her job in helping others better themselves. I am also amazed that some of the more basic movements that she has me completing during the course of my session, leaving me hugely out of breath, whilst she is seemingly able to complete the same exercises with both a smile and no sense of physical exertion at all. I am joined in my session by one of Lisa’s regulars who is very happy to join the “early bird” work out and is clearly far more adept at working her way around the Reformer than I am. The Reformer to my eyes, at first glance looks not unlike an old-fashioned bedstead. It is made up of a number of moving parts, most notably the carriage which I spent much time moving forwards and backwards upon. The carriage is tensioned by a number of springs which have the effect of substantially adjusting the amount of tension that the user requires to actually move it. I was amazed by how much the application of different springs to the carriage made to the difficulty of the individual exercises. Lisa took us through a whole body work out and it is fair to say that whilst I consider
myself to be reasonably fit (for a middle-aged guy) I found many of the movements a real challenge and I felt that I was working elements of my anatomy that clearly weren’t used on a regular basis! There is a clear focus on form, but also on ensuring that your breathing remains under control and your core remains engaged throughout all of the workout. Lisa’s natural demeanour very much put me at ease throughout the session and I left the studio in Knutsford with a very different take on Pilates from when I walked in the door. As I mentioned at the start, anyone who walks into a Pilates Studio with the expectation of an easy ride may be in for a bit of a reality check. My session with Lisa at Inner Strength was eye-opening, for all of the right reasons, and anyone who has a genuine desire to improve their mobility and general wellbeing would be well advised to give it a try! You will find the studio at 44-46 King Street, Knutsford, WA16 6DT www.innerstrength.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON... THE FISHPOOL INN, Delamere W O R D S : K AT H A N N O N
Best for... a pub lunch for all the family
A
dmittedly I was asked, along with my family, to review the Sunday lunch at The Fishpool Inn but due to the state of tiny mind (which is what you have when you have two kids, a dog, a husband and a business) I somehow disregarded this fact and allowed the family to choose anything from the menu. Well, that was the best mistake I ever made. Around our comfy, spacious table sat four adults and two children aged six and one. From an unusually extensive menu, we all chose something completely different. I went with the Thai Red Curry, which was beautiful. I had the delicious prawn option, and the dish was full of vegetables and just a hint of spice (heat). We had classic fish and chips on the table, which was devoured. A burger, again, a clean plate, and skewers, which I also sampled in exchange for a bite of my dish and the meat was cooked beautifully. The kids had sausage, chips, and peas, and the wee one had penne pasta. An incredible sauce, hats off to the sauce chef, both dishes kept them quiet throughout.
A result! Every dish was perfect. Significant portions, dare I say I had some left, and as I mentioned earlier, it was incredibly impressive to have such a wide range on the menu and for all the dishes to be a success. Well done Fishpool Inn Chefs, truly. Rewinding a little bit, The Fishpool Inn is located in one of Cheshire’s most magical locations, Delamere, with the Delamere Forest car park a mere two minutes, drive away. Here you can get out and walk it off, or in fact, earn your meal. We walked with the family for a couple of hours after lunch and had a lovely afternoon. The peaceful scenery and fresh air combined with great food, made it the perfect Sunday experience. The Fishpool Inn is super easy to find off
the A54 and offers plenty of parking. They have a huge wrap around garden, and outdoor seating area for alfresco dining and the staff were charming when we arrived and looked after us throughout. Even though our table was cosy and private, we also felt very looked after. P.s. By the way the Sunday lunch arriving at the table next to us, looked like something not to be missed, so, we’ll just have to go back. ill and I are both classically trained chefs and qualified personal trainers. We both love training and are passionate that healthy food should taste great, so you can still chase your health and fitness goals and enjoy your food. Having been a keen sportsman and food lover my whole life becoming a Chef and personal trainer was a bit of a no brainer! Balance has always been an issue for me, whether its food, beers or more recently over doing it in the gym. I have never had an off button and it has caused me many problems over the years. I am now in a position where I
have really turned a corner. I train when I want to train, eat what I want when I want and still enjoy some beers at the weekend without writing myself off for a whole week! Finding a happy balance in life has been very important for me. I started Fit Chef to try and help other people find balance in their lives, to give them one less thing to
“I wanted to change the way people look at food and how they interpret healthy eating- can healthy food taste great? Of course it can. 64

worry about. Everyone is busy whether its work, kids or just can’t find the time to cook. It’s always easier to eat something that isn’t good for you and that’s where we come in. Having been a Chef and personal trainer I know what REAL food tastes like and there is lots of “meal prep” companies out there sending out the same old boring boiled chicken, over cooked veg and stodgy rice, telling you its healthy and charging you £6 for the pleasure. This is not real food in my opinion and is not
“Find that balance and you will never need to DIET again.”
sustainable to be happy and healthy in the longer term - how is anyone meant to stick to a diet that isn’t REAL food and tastes so bland and miserable? Food is there to be enjoyed. It was after having clients mention this to me that I wanted to change the way people look at food and how they interpret healthy eating. Can healthy food taste great? Of course it can. Can you eat carbs and fats? Of course you can. I believe, that unless you are an athlete or training for something specific you should be able to eat what you want when you want it and still look and feel great- no guilt. It’s about no restrictions/ everything in moderation and enjoying what you’re eating. It may take a little longer to get where you want to be but I assure you its worth it. I wanted to create meals that I love to eat whether I’m training for something or not. I want to share this with my clients and anyone else who is interested. This gives them one less thing to think about so they can spend the weekend with their family, or go to the gym, or even putting those extra hours in at the office without feeling guilty and still enjoy food and life – find that balance and you will never need to DIET again. “Final piece of advice: Stop having cheat days or meals. It’s a flawed mentality. Treat yourself intentionally. Enjoy your food and the process of nourishing your body. This is eating for life.” www.fit-chef.co.uk

The
Sunday Roast REVIEW The quintessentially British Sunday Roast is one of our most popular dishes, so we sent the team out to sample some of the best in the region
THE ROEBUCK INN, MOBBERLEY 4 for Sunday lunch in the heart of Mobberley, Cheshire The Roebuck is an award-winning inn situated in the leafy village of Mobberley. It is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1708 and is the oldest inn in the village. In 2016 the Roebuck re-opened its doors after a lengthy closure. Mary Mclaughlin and Tim Bird acquired it and restored it over 18 months basing their restoration on a ‘petit hotel and bistro’ feel within a traditional old English inn. We were warmly greeted by Chris, the General Manager and his uber friendly team. We decided upon a sharing platter to start, and we were not disappointed, the Roebuck Bistro Board was a revelation, scrumptious from chickpea fritters and Gruyere croquettes to pork meatballs and tempura cauliflower served with homemade pickles, Bosciola olives,
freshly baked bread and infused oils, what’s not to love! Our Sunday lunch mains continued with this level of satisfaction, hearty helpings of meat and vegetables perfectly cooked and a Yorkshire pudding worthy of the name (and there were three Yorkshiremen at the table that day!). A standout point was that each meat was served with its own dedicated meat gravy, a fabulously tasty touch. With a wide selection of food and drink, this is a hidden gem tucked away from the hustle and bustle, one not to be missed! 20 STORIES, MANCHESTER David Poynton and family took to the rooftops of Manchester for their Sunday Roast in Spinningfields
On our way to 20 Stories, we walked through the vibrant Spinningfields district of Manchester. Competition for bars and restaurants in this part of Manchester is especially tough, so we were very keen to see how 20 Stories are trying to stand out from the local competition. As we approached the entrance one could easily mistake it for just another office tower. However, we couldn’t have been more mistaken. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who took our coats and guided us to the elevator which took us directly to the 19 floor and to 20 stories. At this point it felt like we had discovered a secret bar and restaurant, we had arrived mid-afternoon on a busy bank holiday Sunday and the atmosphere was one of sophistication yet fun. We checked in with the hostess who was very accommodating and we had a drink at the bar before our meal. The cocktail we chose was a Truffle Honey Old Fashioned which is a great take on a classic with a twist and beautifully presented. We also had the 20 stories Pale Ale which is
68
everything I have come to enjoy about modern pale ale served on draught. Live music was being played which complimented the atmosphere as we took our drinks out to the roof terrace, which is truly stunning. The lush dĂŠcor inside flows out onto the terrace perfect for a 19th floor roof terrace in this trendy part of Manchester. Once seated for our meal we browsed the extensive wine menu and the sommelier guided us to our choice- a Kekfrankos from Hungary. This for us was a perfect red for a hearty Sunday lunch. Our server Andre was excellent; he explained the menu in a detailed way that made us want to order all of the dishes. For starters, we ordered the ham hock and trotter croquettes, and the chicken and foie gras terrine, both were presented with precision and were adequately portioned. For our mains, we went traditional having roasted topside of beef and rolled pork belly both served with traditional garnish. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and served separately allowing for us to build our lunch in accordance with our appetite. The beef was cooked medium rare therefore allowing all of the flavour to come through. The pork was moist and was matched with a luxurious mash and cauliflower cheese. For dessert, we chose the lemon tart and the carrot cake. Once again the presentation was on point and these desserts rounded off what was a very enjoyable afternoon. If you are looking to enjoy a few drinks and a relaxed meal on a Sunday afternoon out with friends and family, 20 Stories needs to make your short list. Not only will you not be disappointed I am sure you will be quite impressed. No. 1 Spinningfields 1 Hardman Square, Manchester M3 3EB www.20stories.co.uk

THE PHEASANT INN, TATTENHALL Louisa, Iain and Amber Warde took a family trip to The Pheasant Inn
Nestled in the Peckforton Hills, The Pheasant Inn is a great spot for those who love the outdoors, offering amazing views across the plains, accommodation for tired walkers and a resting place for your four-legged friends too. Whilst the menu caters for light and larger bites we were only interested in the Sunday roasts – there are two options every week based on the best meats available at the time. Roast pork and roast beef were on the menu this week and we were eagerly seated at 12noon for our feast after a weekend on DIY and decorating.
Arriving promptly our plates were piled high and topped with a giant Yorkshire pudding. Vegetables included red cabbage, cauliflower cheese, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, and carrots, topped with a generous helping of meat, gravy and Yorkshire pudding on top. It was just what we needed and our plates were cleaned, with the help of our nine-month-old Yorkshire Pudding thief, Amber, and Monty, the dog from the next table who happily cleaned up any dropped food from said thief. For us, The Pheasant Inn was a welcoming venue, the staff and fellow diners happy to chat without any worries that our little one was going to make a mess as she masters the art of eating. It’s also a great place to start or finish a walk, Sunday roast and stunning views awaiting. The Pheasant Inn, Higher Buwardsley, Tattenhall, CH3 9PF www.thepheasantinn.co.uk

PALM COURT RESTAURANT AT THE GROSVENOR PULFORD, CHESTER Situated within its own beautifully landscaped grounds Darren Maw and friends visited the luxurious hotel restaurant. Situated on the outskirts of Chester, this was my first time visiting Palm Court Restaurant. The venue was easily accessible from the motorway network )A55, M53, M56 and M6) and there was parking on site which meant we didn’t have far to walk post meal. We were greeted by Lucy the lovely receptionist who kindly led us to our table. The setting of the restaurant is just outstanding, I would go as far as saying probably one of the best restaurant decors that I have had the pleasure to visit, with a small water feature at one end, gorgeous lighting, soft furnishings and even a piano that played itself. The Sunday roast is a carvery which was perfect
for us as you can choose exactly the meats that you would like and as much or as little veg to accompany. All of the food was presented beautifully and the Yorkshire puddings were nearly as big as your plate which pleased me most as I devoured two of them. We couldn’t have asked for more from a leisurely Sunday afternoon, we were treated like royalty, the atmosphere was lovely and the food was delicious. All of us said we would return in a heartbeat. I would recommend to anyone especially if you are looking for somewhere for a special occasion. Wrexham Road, Pulford, Chester CH4 9DG www.grosvenorpulfordhotel.co.uk
THE GLASS ROOM, LONDON A destination venue for a Sunday Roast, we recommend dining on the water in London. Get a whole new perspective of the capital city and set sail with Bateaux London’s brand new boat, Glass Room. Ditch dry land and hop aboard from Embankment Pier for a truly memorable on the water experience, featuring stylish interiors from Tom Dixon and great food combined with river views of London’s most iconic landmarks and live music. The Glass Room hoists its anchor for Sunday lunch cruises and, with private dining rooms, it offers a unique escape from the bustle of the capital for friends and family. Once on board, the décor takes a chic yet contemporary nautical theme, featuring tones of ultramarine blue, red and white set against warm lighting, clean crisp lines, leafy plants and bespoke oak cladding. A key feature and what sets this boat apart from its competitors is its impressive all-glass structure allowing for uninterrupted, unparalleled views of London’s most recognisable 70
structures, from the London Eye to the Tower of London and Houses of Parliament. Towards the front of the boat, a small balcony allows for a more intimate view of the Thames, whilst at the bow a private, raised outdoor terrace can accommodate parties and groups. 67 Charing Cross Rd, London WC2H 7PZ www.theglassroom.org

A View From Yonder
With plenty to discover at Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire, why not stay overnight on the grounds in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom 16th century hunting tower? Standing at 400 feet above Chatsworth House, the unique accommodation affords panoramic views over Capability Brown’s magnificent park. The hunting tower was originally used to watch the hounds working when hunting in the park below, then in modern times, it was lived in by members of the estate staff and most recently by the Duke’s nephew, but since 2003, it has been a unique holiday let. www.elevenexperience.com

riving up along the long, prestigious drive, through beautiful parkland to Bodysgallen Hall, I could feel my anticipation rise; it felt as if we had been invited to stay on someone’s private estate, in an exquisite country home. Our intent was to really ‘get away’; to retreat, relax and unwind for a few days, and to return home afterwards feeling revived. The hotel is in 200 acres of secluded parkland, and on the drive up to the hotel we saw unusual birds, and new born lambs crossing the drive in front of us. By the time we got to the main house, we were already feeling completely away from it all. The entrance to the hotel is a huge beautifully crafted wooden door, understatedly grand, and stepping through the door we were welcomed by a warm, relaxing lounge of a beautiful country house. We were staying in one of the 16 cottages, in the grounds of the hotel, and to get to our lodge we wove our way along a small path, through a finely manicured garden court with sweet scented herbs and flowers everywhere. Our cottage was very private and quiet, yet an easy walk to the main hotel, and with two rooms, two bathrooms and a lounge there was plenty of space to make ourselves at home. The feel of the rooms was of a country home, beautifully decorated, and without too much fuss. Afternoons were spent relaxing in the main hotel, and around every corner in the main house we found a new cosy snug in which to settle into, read books/magazines, and drink tea. Bodysgallen really feels like a ‘country home away from home’. A place which you can settle into quickly, with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for our weekend retreat. The view from our table overlooked the gardens, with Conwy castle glistening in the distance. Many of the staff have been at Bodysgallen for a long time and have truly mastered the art of excellent customer service; always being there for your every need, yet never getting in your way. One of the main attractions at Bodysgallen are the gardens, which have been recognised for their award-winning restoration. Each morning, after breakfast, we took a walk exploring them, passing the lily ponds, wandering along woodland walks, and through the kitchen’s herb and vegetable garden. There is a stunning, rare C17th parterre of box hedges, at the centre of which is a sundial dating 1678. Another highlight for guests is going up a secret old stone spiral stairwell to an open viewing point at the top of a tower, where one can see spectacular views of Snowdonia and Conwy Castle. The General Manager, Elgan Roberts, took us on a private tour up to view, and to learn more about this Grade 1 listed historic house. On the second day we spent an afternoon at the Spa, located down a small drive, in a separate building. The Spa is well known for its treatments, using Aromatherapy Associates products, and I was glad that I upgraded to a longer 80 minute session at the last minute! After my treatment, and using the pool, jacuzzi and steam room, I came away feeling completely rejuvenated and restored. For a three-day spa break, this country house really offers something unique. At Bodysgallen you certainly experience the best of a country house retreat, which would be difficult to find anywhere else. One American couple we met visit the UK every year, simply to visit Bodysgallen. They just don’t want to go anywhere else! Well, we will certainly be back. Our intention of a relaxing spa break, returning home feeling revived, was fully accomplished in our three days’ stay. THE LAWRENCE HOTEL, LANCASHIRE: MEET THE TEAM To celebrate our Best of British issue we sat down with the core team members from our favourite British Boutique Hotel to find out what they most enjoy about their jobs
MICHAEL HUCKERBY
JILL BOLLARD
“Pendle Hill is one of the best-known jewels in Lancashire’s crown, there is as much history and heritage in Lancashire as there is in a place like the Lake District, but we need to learn to market it properly to attract people from the surrounding areas. We’ve already had guests from all over the world come to stay with us, from Wales & Italy to America, Australia, and Canada, but we need to focus on showcasing the destination to those who live on our doorstep.”
“I love getting stuck into the Burnley business scene and working with Michael and the team at The Lawrence. The venue is the perfect location for everything from romantic breaks away to the countryside, a hiking weekend or even a corporate or business booking, so it’s great to be able to work with somewhere that ticks so many boxes. It’s certainly a venue I would stay at myself, so I think it has the perfect amount of appeal for a new market of tourists in the area.”
Owner
RYAN BIRKETT Head Chef
“I’ve only been at The Lawrence since November, but I’ve felt so at home here, and the team and the customers are so welcoming. The staff are brilliant, and with The Lawrence being in quite a small town, it’s been great to get to know everyone, as everyone who comes in is unique and has a story to tell. I’ve been able to have total reign over the menu too, so it’s nice to be able to build this myself and create food that people enjoy.”

“Hetti is part of the family at The Lawrence. We’ve always been dog-friendly, and Hetti is often around the hotel and loves making friends with the locals. With so much open space and great walks in the area, it’s the perfect getaway for dogs and their owners looking for a destination hotel in the UK. We want to offer a bespoke experience for all our visitors, and so when it comes to pet requests, The Lawrence is always more than happy to accommodate!” www.thelawrencehotel.co.uk 79
THE
Palm Springs OF THE
Algarve Matt Hawtin Roper discovers the incredible Quinta do Lago, Portugal
T
here is something very exciting about the Algarve in the southwestern part of Portugal. The climate, with its 300 days of sunshine, unspoilt coastline and if you’re a sports enthusiast, it quite simply is a ‘Disneyland’ for adults. If you look out the window as you make the final approach into Faro Airport, you will gaze down at scenery resembling the Florida Everglades. You almost have to pinch yourself to be reminded that you’ve only been flying for three hours and you’re still in the same time zone as the UK. We were met at the airport by a QDL shuttle, and after a short drive through some quaint Portuguese scenery, we turned off the main road onto a winding country lane, suddenly reaching the hidden gem that is Quinto de Lago. Over four times the size of Monaco, it’s home to some of Europe’s finest golf courses, sports facilities, finedining and acres filled with beautiful upscale villas and breath-taking 5-star hotels. We stayed at the brand new Magnolia Hotel. A unique two-story boutique property, complete with a retro neon sign that offers a taste of Palm Springs; a homage to that 1950’s Motel vibe. The property has 74 well-configured rooms

and three suites across its two floors, plus seven lodge style self-catering cottages. It’s a resort that has been designed to offer affordable 4-star accommodation for families, golfers, or people that want a relaxing, poolside escape. The rooms are compact but contemporary, with either a balcony on the upper floor or small patio that offers direct access to the pool. This may be a 4-star hotel, but you can expect all the luxuries of something grander. Features include a high-quality, king-size bed with 300 count cotton sheets and duvets, blackout blinds, plush bath towels, and a waterfall walk-in shower with a range of branded aromatherapy skincare products. It’s obvious the owners have invested in quality where it matters. Thoughtful little touches like USB charger points, UK and International sockets, and a large flat screen TV with all the UK digital channels, give you home away from home convenience; the attention to detail adding to the air of luxury. The seven pastel-coloured cabins offer the flexibility of self-catering accommodation.

Tucked away at the rear of the property, with views across green fields are tennis courts. You almost wish they were sitting at the edge of the sea when you step out of them. They are unique and individual in design and ideally suited to guests looking to book a more extended stay or those with families. If you venture into the basement of the main accommodation complex, you will find one of the best hotel gyms you’ve ever seen. You can understand why the hotel is proving a popular destination with international athletes and sports teams in their training season. The beautiful heated pool separating the restaurant and bar from the accommodation is surrounded by sun loungers, allowing good use of the vibrant red beach towel and flip flops the hotel leaves you in your welcome pack. The restaurant’s original menu was designed by ex Soho House Chef, Tom Briggs, but we were told
there is a new menu arriving featuring local influences from their new Head Chef, Luigo. It really ticks all the boxes, not to mention it’s reasonably priced and they cater for all with their signature “Mag” burger and also kid’s favourites like fish fingers should they want it. In the summer evenings, it has outdoor movie nights projected onto the side of the hotel, with live music and DJ nights giving you that true members club in Miami feeling. You get the impression they have tried hard to give their guests a relaxed boutique experience where anything is available without giving it that exclusive 5-star stuffy feeling. After lunch, we took a drive into the heart of Quinto do Lago. It holds a long-standing heritage as Portugal’s finest residential resort - something we will be writing about in a future issue. You drive by some of the most breath-taking Villas, each surrounded by electric gates and palm trees. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just driven into Beverly Hills. Residents in QDL don’t talk about who lives here, but you can see why A-list celebs and athletes choose to build here as it really is the place of dreams. If sports and fitness is your thing, The Campus is a €10 million multi training and wellness retreat. If you took the very best David Lloyd Club, fused it together with Soho Farmhouse and then add a Stadium quality training pitch, you would be close to imagining the vision behind this unique state of the art innovation. Framed light grey panelling really gives it that calming exclusive retreat feeling, and these design influences are continued throughout the complex. What makes it stand out, though, is the facilities. There are two bright and airy gyms with all the equipment a gym goer could dream of, plus spin and exercise studio on the upper floors. The Hydro Centre offers a quiet retreat touch. With two amazing aromatherapy steam/ sauna rooms complete with a cold plunge pool and jacuzzi. There is a wellness and rehabilitation spa opposite offering a wide selection of massages

and complementary therapies. We, of course, ventured outside and found the full-size swimming pool with sun loungers to catch some rays. The complex is finished off with six clay and acrylic outdoor tennis courts and four paddle tennis courts. They host racquet and football academies throughout the year for juniors and adults; Judy Murray and Rio Ferdinand hosted this year. The Campus has been designed to offer elite athletes a warm training and rehabilitation centre and fitness enthusiasts an action-packed adventure. You start questioning why your gym membership back home isn’t this good. QDL is beautifully located on a hillside overlooking the sea. If you want to explore its beauty, you can hire a bike from the aptly named “Bike Shed”, managed by Mark Rohan, a Double Paralympic Champion. He and his team are so friendly and there to help with maps and a guide if you want one to take you on the most magical tours through the 2000 acres of the Ria Formosa National Park. After an action-packed, physical day, we visited Dano’s Sports Bar and Restaurant, located within the Campus Complex. Still, in keeping with that member’s club feel we weren’t disappointed with the atmosphere within the beautiful gastro setting. They have an extensive Live Music program which added to a great night. We didn’t feel out of place drinking a refreshing Orange Marmalade Breakfast Martini at 9pm. Day two – We couldn’t visit Quinto do Lago without experiencing the golf this oasis offers. There are three world-class golf courses, and they genuinely are breathtaking. Now, I haven’t picked up a golf club in over ten years, so we took a trip to their Paul McGinley Academy and
82
had a few lessons from a very patient and forgiving instructor called Nunno. There is nothing quite like having a lesson on a driving range with a beautiful ocean on the horizon and the sun beaming down on you. I was starting to feel like I wanted to sell up everything and buy one of the Villas overlooking this beautiful scenery. In search of a little pick me up after golf, we had to try a local favourite called Pure. With the most amazing home-made salads and desserts, it was the Algarve’s take on your favourite little afternoon tea spot. On this occasion, though, we tried a shot of lemon and ginger infused with cayenne pepper and flaxseed oil, which picked us back up before dinner. There are so many great restaurants in QDL, but we opted for Bovino’s Steak House, stunningly located up in the Hills with its neighbouring sister restaurant Casa Velha, where reservations have to be made six months in advance. A traditional Portuguese ‘Calcada” style space, combined with a contemporary approach reminiscent of the Ivy, it has a sublime atmosphere. You can see why it’s a favourite of the locals. But the real stars here are the food and drink. A beautifully crafted cocktail list that you could spend an entire evening sampling as the sun sets. For the foodies out there you can’t leave without sampling their steaks. The Chateaubriand and signature cuts are available as sharers, and they literally melt in your mouth. I’m afraid this isn’t the place to be a vegetarian! The possibilities are endless in Quinto Do Lago. With its stunning natural landscapes, incredible dining experiences and world-class sports and leisure facilities. If you’re looking for a foodie extravaganza full of activities or want to lounge by a pool or beach and recharge QDL has it all. www.quintadolago.com

Millennial Tech Entrepreneurs I
Investment managers Carl Mitchell and Simone Bilton are helping tech entrepreneurs to protect and grow their wealth
nvestec Wealth & Investment (IW&I) has a rich history of achieving the best outcomes for clients dating back to 1827. We have been proactive in moving with the times by adapting our proposition to complement and facilitate the evolving needs of clients. IW&I has had an office in Manchester since the early 1990s. Over the past decade, we have seen a boom in the number of entrepreneurs between the ages of 25 to 40 taking advantage of developments in technology to launch a business – many of whom require a professional
financial helping hand to help grow their start-up, but also support them when the time comes to step away. At the coalface of relationships with such clientele are Carl Mitchell and Simone Bilton. The duo, who, aged 35 and 28 respectively, are both firmly in the Millennial demographic, are based in Cheshire and work as part of IW&I’s Manchester Investment Management team. Carl, an Investment Director, joined IW&I after graduating from University in 2006 and then embarked on an Investment Qualification programme which saw him spend time in both Investec’s Liverpool and Leeds offices, with the latter move being as a Discretionary Desk Investment manager. Carl then moved to Manchester in 2011 where he took on a client facing role. Simone, an Investment Manager, joined in October last year following an almost four-year stint at another wealth manager in a client relationship role In addition to working directly with private clients and entrepreneurs, they work with a range of intermediaries such as Independent Financial Advisers, solicitors and accountants to offer tailored Investment Management solutions for clients. For entrepreneur clients, this translates into a comprehensive, bespoke wealth management service (working closely with our Financial Planning colleagues), thus ensuring that the

client “journey” is seamless from start to finish. Simone says: “We look to build longstanding relationships with entrepreneurs with the ultimate aim of being there to support them when they decide to crystallise the value in their business. By working alongside our Financial Planning colleagues, we can look to provide an Investment Management solution that helps to steer clients away from the potential pitfalls that could negatively impact their private finances, post the sale of their business.” “We often find that clients whose start-up is centred on technology and digital media feel confident in explaining their business concerns and testing out new ideas with us because we’re their target demographic”. Carl added: “I believe it is imperative to be open and honest with my clients, and a key element of this is ensuring that they fully understand the costs and charges that they will incur as part of our service. As part of this, it is critical that we provide accurate, factual information which enables prospective clients to make the right decision when it comes to choosing a wealth management firm to deal with. It also ensures that you develop a healthy working relationship going forward.”
A common issue for many entrepreneurs is knowing when to sell a stake in their company and coming up with a strategy to do so. Carl said: “Most entrepreneurs work tirelessly to scale their business but don’t know how to cash in on the fruits of their labour. This is one of the key areas where we can help”. “Most business owners’ personal wealth is usually tied up in the company. As an owner looks to diversify, a liquidity event becomes a critical step in the wealth management planning process.” It is our people, coupled with our unique culture and values that are absolutely central to the quality of the services that we deliver to our clients. Vicki O’Callaghan & Michelle O’Riordan Introducing the founders of BabyBoo; a leading sustainable childrenswear company
...functional and organic clothing that was also kind to baby’s skin...
98
BabyBoo was founded in 2014 by the team duo after they struggled to find quality clothing for their children, who were suffering with eczema and reflux. Based in Ireland, BabyBoo has since its launch, providing a refreshing take on baby wear, and had already taken the industry by storm, with their purse-friendly products for little ones that are also kind to skin. The inspiration behind BabyBoo was to create a brand unlike any other and since its launch - BabyBoo has created unique, fun clothing for kids with special attention to detail. With 5 kids between the founders - ranging from ages 4 to 13 BabyBoo was a natural progression for Vicki (who specialised in digital product development & marketing) and Michelle (who has a background in HR and a degree in Business). The mother brains behind the brand always expressed their need for functional and organic clothing that was also kind to baby’s skin and wanted to fill that missing link. www.babyboo.ie

There are three separate approaches
to luxury camper van ownership. You could go down the enormous RV route, but they’re a bit impractical here in the UK, or you could go for a classic VW. Or, better still, you could have one of these. It’s called the Marco Polo, and it’s Mercedes’ idea of a camper van. So you get all the creature comforts of a premium saloon car, as well as a double bed. The most luxurious models even come with a kitchen, complete with fridge and sink. Spontaneous staycations have never been so appealing. From £56,325 www.mercedes-benz.co.uk

BEAUTY AND A BEAST
Just when you thought the DBS Superleggera couldn’t get any prettier...
I
f there’s one surefire way of increasing the dramatic appeal of a car, it’s chopping the roof off. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a Ford or a Ferrari; losing the lid is pretty much guaranteed to make it more exciting. What isn’t at all certain, though, is that decapitating a car will make it any prettier. But with the new DBS Superleggera Volante, we suspect Aston Martin might have nailed it on both counts. From any angle and in any light, it’s absolutely stunning. At the front, it has the curved lights from a DB11 and the DBS’s trademark gaping grille, while the electrically operated roof lives under has a speedboat-style deck behind the seats. When
it rains - and it will, because we’re in Cheshire - the canvas hood can be coaxed from its hiding place in just 16 seconds. But we’re guessing you’ll want the roof down as often as possible, if only so you can hear that 5.2-litre V12 engine assault your eardrums. As well as sending noise through the exhausts, the engine also directs 715bhp to the rear wheels, allowing a 0-60mph time of 3.6 seconds and an incredible 211mph top speed. Net result? The fastest drop-top Aston ever. 102

LIVING IT LARGE The battle to create the most luxurious SUV is hotting up. It was once a straight fight between the Bentley Bentayga and Range Rover, but now the Rolls-Royce Cullinan has joined the fray, along with the BMW X7. So Mercedes has escalated things once more, wading in with the new GLS. It’s marketed as a seven-seat limo with ground clearance and four-wheel drive, but there’s more to it than that. It’s even bigger than its predecessor, giving it more space and presence, while there’s also more on-board tech to play with and a new 3.0-litre diesel engine.
SMALL BUT MIGHTY
TOP CAT Carbon-fibre has proven its worth among those most useful of materials. Its lightness and strength have put it at the forefront of automotive design, but the marine industry has been slower to respond. Which is why, in 2019, sports brand Donzi has revealed what it calls the first all-carbon-fibre sports catamaran. It’s called the Icon 44, and, as the name suggests, it’s a 44-foot lance of lightweight carbon-fibre craftsmanship. The helm is futuristic, with carbon-fibre bucket seats and screens instead of dials, while the whole lot is protected by a spaceship-style double-curve windscreen. At the command of the central throttle quadrant are four 400-horsepower Mercury Racing 400R outboard motors, although you also have the option of listening to the huge on-board sound system.
The Fiat 500 is many things, but few would accuse it of being sporty. That’s why Fiat owns Abarth, a company that exists solely to make cars like this - the 595 Esseesse. It’s basically a 500 on steroids, with white racing wheels, a sports exhaust and chunkier bumpers, while the cabin boasts lashings of carbon-fibre and bucket seats. Oh, and with 177bhp on tap, you get a top speed of 140mph.

One Car
TO RULE Them All After years of writing about cars, James Fossdyke reckons he’s finally found perfection...
B
ack in the early 2000s, Oasis told us true perfection had to be imperfect, and for many years I’ve agreed. I’ve spent hours driving everything from Ferraris to Fiats and from Maseratis to Mazdas in a bid to find the automotive holy grail. And although I’ve been close - the Lexus LC I drove a few months ago, for example, got under my skin like few cars before or since - nothing has ever been spot on. I always thought it was just me. I thought I was too demanding and too needy. Maybe I was a haughty perfectionist, out of touch with the realities of compromise, or just too cynical to appreciate the qualities before me. Then, this month, all that changed. Because I drove the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo. Essentially an estate version of Porsche’s Panamera four-door saloon (the one that, like an automotive Gareth Southgate, used to be ugly but now looks kind of handsome), it didn’t sound like the most exciting proposition on the planet. But it’s actually quite a handsome devil. I like the full-width light across the back and the four LEDs in the headlights. The proportions
104
are just right, too, with the slightly taller rear end that somehow makes it look more elegant than its four-door sibling. And it’s great inside, where you sit in sports seats that manage to be unbelievably comfortable without doing anything especially clever. They’re supportive and soft and even kind of cool in a minimalist, German sort of way. Most importantly, though, you can sit in those seats for hours and get out feeling as though
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Drive
you’d only just sat down. They are, in a way, a metaphor for the Porsche’s cabin as a whole. It isn’t chintzy or ostentatious like some luxury cars, but it’s incredibly well built, everything works as it should and it’s outrageously spacious for what is, when all’s said and done, a Porsche. But that doesn’t make it boring. There’s a massive touchscreen that’s almost infinitely customisable, and you even get a host of displays in the instrument cluster to tell you your lap times or tyre pressures or which junction to take off the M56. You could while away hours just playing with the technology.
105
Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine
But you won’t want to do that, because those hours could be far better spent driving. Porsche’s aptitude for building sports cars is second to none, and that’s rubbed off on the Panamera. It still feels big and heavy, but it’s stable and balanced even if you’re driving it like a bit of an idiot. I’m not saying it’ll outpace or out-corner supercars, but it will run them a lot closer than you might expect. For all that, though, it’s clear that this was a car designed for the German motorways. It’s incredibly comfortable and serene, with an almost outrageously effortless turn of speed. My test car was the 4 E-Hybrid model, which combines an electric motor with a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine to produce 456bhp. The result is 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, and 0-100mph in about 11 seconds. It doesn’t hang about. But because it’s a plug-in hybrid, it can be used as an electric car, with a real-world range of about 25 miles or so. That doesn’t sound so amazing when Teslas will manage more than 200 miles with ease, but it’s more than enough for the odd petrolfree jaunt to Sainsbury’s. It’s also enough to ensure exemption from the London Congestion Charge. And despite the Panamera’s size, it’s just as at home in town as it is anywhere else. Visibility is good, so you can see where
106

everything is, and there’s something Price from: £83,288 quite enjoyable Price as tested: £102,736 about watching Engine: 2.9-litre V6 with electric motor the puzzled faces Power: 456bhp as your Porsche 0-62mph: 4.6 seconds slides past in silence. Top Speed: 170mph It’s not quite as enjoyable, though, as the almost violent soundtrack from that V6 engine. And the V8 versions sound even better. Aside from proper off-roading, which very few of us ever do, I can’t think of a single situation that the Panamera wouldn’t suit perfectly. It’s fast, it’s comfortable, it handles well, it’s roomy and, if it snows or rains, there’s four-wheel drive to keep you moving. You can even raise it up slightly to give it more ground clearance at low speed. I do have some criticisms, but I spent a long time trying to find anything to complain about. In the end, though, I realised the cupholders are in a really awkward position that’s just where you want to put your left elbow, so take-out mochas could easily end up all over the leather. I also found I couldn’t work out how to use the buttons on the steering wheel to switch tracks on the in-car hi-fi - although that probably says more about me than the car. So that’s it. I finally have a one-sizefits-all answer to the question every motoring journalist is asked most often. Yep, I mean the “What’s your favourite car?” question. Well now it’s the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, and nothing else will do.

DON’T RAIN ON AIDEN’S
PARADE We sit down with Designer Michelle Derbyshire to discuss her work on the latest offering from Chester Racecourse, a luxury raceday dining experience; Parade with Aiden Byrne. What were your first thoughts about the concept? When I was first approached about Parade with Aiden Byrne, I thought it was fantastic idea and I was really looking forward to being involved. The brief I received from Holly and Charlotte at A Styled Lifestyle instantly made me fall in love with the concept and it was something I could really envisage working. To me, Parade was intended to be a jewellery box in the centre of the racecourse; a really high end, luxurious and totally unique venue, ready to be discovered. To top it off, we have Aiden serving a delicious menu, coupled with a prime location and beautiful interiors, a truly winning combination.
How influential have you been in the development of the concept as a whole? I felt really lucky coming in on the project at a time where I could still have a say on a lot of the elements. Being Australian, I’m very black and white in my attitude, so there were things I knew I wanted to incorporate and luckily the team were very receptive to my ideas.
What brief were you working to and have you deviated from it at all? The brief was to create a luxury, high-end and comfortable venue with plenty of light, incorporating both classic and contemporary features. It was an interesting project for
110
me because, as opposed to doing a normal restaurant where there are constraints such as materials to use, these weren’t much of an issue with Parade. However, with the space essentially being a glass box, there were limitations as you’d usually decorate the walls, but we managed to work around this.
Please can you explain the interior concept? Being a viewing point for the guests was obviously of paramount importance, so Parade has glazed elevations. We needed to keep these windows free from decoration, which is unusual compared to other sites where you would typically decorate the
Home Homes and Interiors The CHESHIRE Magazine |
walls. The solution we came up with was to shift our focus to the ceiling, which is a beautiful copper colour. The overall idea was to create a light, invigorating and luxurious summer space that has a classic feel rather than being trend driven. The colour palette is a muted mint green, gold and white paired with plenty of leafy plants. This is going to be the point of difference to other venues within the racecourse, which tend to have a darker, more masculine palette. There’s an overall air of luxurious comfort at Parade, with a mix of table and lounge seating for guests so that people have a variety of places to sit - from the viewing deck upstairs, to the bar and the restaurant.
As we understand, there’s been a tight turnaround on this concept. How long has the process taken from initial drawings to execution? I started on the job at the end of February where it was literally a concrete slab. I remember looking at it and Richard Thomas turning to me and saying, “Are you up for the ride?” I always am, so it was a no brainer. We had to get to work straight away as construction had already started and the builders needed to know about fitting points and the such… a couple of weeks later we had produced a scheme.
How do you feel Parade and the interiors you’ve created will set this new facility apart from other racecourses throughout the UK?
It’s really exciting from this point of view as I just don’t think there’s anything else out there like it. We deliberately didn’t look into other racecourses and their offer because we wanted to ensure we designed it as we would a normal restaurant, rather than a sporting venue. It’s not only a beautiful space but it has so much to offer. It’s a great all-round experience for the guest, which was really important to me when I agreed to take the project on. I think it’s vital to design to a space that is backed up by the food, service, wine and overall atmosphere and this is something I feel really passionately about. www.chester-races.com/parade
What has been the most exciting part of the project? I have really enjoyed working with the girls (Charlotte and Holly from A Styled Lifestyle) as they really understand the importance of attention to detail.

Top Tips • Bold wallpaper creates a huge impact so it tends to be the starting point for a room design. One or two statement walls is often enough. They’re striking without being overpowering. • For those wanting to embrace the bold look, layer up and duplicate the pattern in your furnishings. • Monochrome geometrics are perfect for those who like a contemporary clean look. • Small spaces are the perfect place to use bold wallpaper. And they can actually make the room feel larger. Bathrooms or hallways are a great start to your wallpaper adventure, especially if they’re a totally different style from the rest of your décor. • Not quite brave enough to embrace the full bold wallpaper effect? Try a mural – the hottest new way to wallpaper and tell a story in your home.

NATURAL TRANQUILITY DD Clinical is quietly placed in the heart of Chester offering state-of-the-art technologies to provide non-surgical and non-invasive treatments. The objective was to create an atmosphere of sophisticated elegance
W
ith an existing clinical dÊcor, the main challenge of the refurbishment for designer Michelle Sims was to marry the clinical requirements of the business with a welcoming and tranquil place to visit. The aim was to create an experience that will be unforgettable for the customer, to evoke calm and tranquility, thus reflecting the brand values of the new owner. Inspiration came from nature and how nature can reflect the stages of skin treatments. It was important to use naturally soft and warm materials to balance the technology. From the moment you walk in, the design has been considered – the mission to take clients on a journey. As you enter the clinic, you are greeted by a sensory experience, a

subtle fragrance invites you in, with a floral display which is surrounded by hues of grey and contrasting concrete wallpaper, welcoming you to DD Clinical. The acoustics have been improved by the addition of soft carpeting to the entry stairs. Once you have arrived at the first floor a small seated area uses soft grey walls to frame and compliment the blue crushed velvet designer chairs, an inviting niche to the reception area. The main waiting area provides various styles of comfortable furniture, a striking feature of this space is the contrast of materials. On one side there is a moss wall which is softly lit and on the opposing curve is a flowing chain link curtain which creates layers in the space. A separate relaxing lounge uses the harsh textured concrete wallpaper to imitate the feeling of before a treatment, while the velvet grey chaise evokes the effect of softness achieved after treatments. Timber furniture brings the whole design together, giving a feeling of being in nature and calmness. Colours are incorporated with the light blue globe pendants and contrasting mustard cushions. Finally, the lighting throughout has dramatically changed the atmosphere by removing the harsh commercial style downlighting within the false ceiling and replacing with subtle linear LED. The result is a calm and inspiring experience for professional treatments and service.

Q&A
with
MARGARET LOWRY, JOHN HILDITCH & CO.
Tell us a little about yourself… Born on the Wirral, Cheshire I started my working life at a stockbroker in Liverpool before transferring up to Edinburgh where I lived for 12 years and where my son was born. I then relocated to Alderley Edge where I decided a new career in estate agency was the perfect opportunity to build some local knowledge and interact with the community. I have always loved property and have spent a lot of time renovating and upgrading my own homes and was therefore delighted to get a part time job at a local estate agent. I love my career and I have now been in the business 24 years! John set up John N Hilditch & Co in 1996 and I joined the company in 2001. I am extremely proud that for the second consecutive year John Hilditch & Co has won the British Property Awards for the Altrincham area. The award was independently judged on our outstanding customer service, sales and prices achieved.
good idea as it would free all first time buyers from any duty. There would still need to be a tax for people with second homes and buy-to-let purchasers, though. What makes the perfect home? For me, it’s a happy home with lots of light and ease of maintenance. I also love a garden and a space to relax after a hard day’s work. www.jhilditch.com
What do you love most about the properties in Cheshire? I love working in Hale as the property stock is so diverse. One minute you will be showing a £3,000,000 new build home the next a smaller period terrace or apartment. What is your greatest achievement and what made it so special? My greatest moment in the business must be selling a property where all the proceeds went to the North West Air Ambulance charity. It was the biggest bequest the charity had ever received and it was such a privilege to be part of it. What do you see as the biggest challenge facing estate and lettings agents at the moment? The current Brexit situation has created uncertainty causing paralysis by analysis. This said, the less motivated buyers have now taken a back seat however the more motivated clientele are still purchasing, and we haven’t seen a major fall off in sales. If you became Housing Minister for a day what would you change? Obviously stamp duty, which is a huge burden for the young. There has been much talk about switching the burden from the purchaser to the seller and I think this is a
P.S. What’s your average weekend like? Weekends are precious. I love relaxing with friends and family over a glass of wine and enjoying the beautiful Cheshire countryside and amenities we have on our doorstep. What’s your dream purchase? A property, of course! My dream buy would be a beach front house or chalet in Abersoch. 137

THE ART OF
DESIGN
The forward-thinking team at illustrious design practice Design by UBER recently visited Milan to attend one of the world’s most renowned design shows, Salone del Mobile.
T
MOIRE LIGHTING BY TERZANI
he Salone is held each Spring and is a key date in the calendar for design industry professionals as well as anyone with a passion for shape and form. Since its inception in the 1960s, the show has gained a reputation for launching exciting new talent and is firmly established at the forefront of dynamic design. For the team at Design by UBER the Salone offers a unique opportunity to explore the very best new ideas and products from around the world all showcased under one roof. The first thing that strikes home is the sheer scale of the show, spread over multiple halls it covers over 200,000 square metres and showcases more than 2,300 of the world’s most pioneering design companies. This year also featured the

biennial event, Euroluxe in which four halls are dedicated to lighting alone. The Salone focuses on three distinct style categories. Namely Classic, which draws on the values of tradition, craftsmanship and skill; Design where products speak of functionality, innovation and an innate sense of style; and xLux where timeless luxury is re-written in a contemporary key. A definite trend this year was towards designing with clean and simple lines executed with superlative craftsmanship. There was an emphasis on strong architectural aesthetics, with linear forms sculpted from luxury materials and the finest of finishes featuring prominently. Design by UBER had the opportunity to explore new lighting designs from seasoned brands as well as from experimental up and coming companies and designers. Across the board innovation and creativity proliferated with contemporary cluster lighting arrangements and stylish geometric shapes being very much en vogue. Lighting was crafted from a variety of materials with a leaning towards bronze and brass, often in combination with blown glass or alabaster creating a perfect pallet of finishes. Euroluxe proved itself to be a hub of dynamic ingenuity with brands to watch including Serip, CTO Lighting, Terzani, Paolo Castelli, SkLO and Occhio. The main exhibition halls bombarded the senses with room sets and individual furniture pieces which epitomised the pinnacle of stylised design. Marble table tops featured heavily ranging from those

formed from the classical Calacatta and Emperador stone through to more eclectic green and red toned marbles. Occasional tables arranged in clusters worked particularly well and it was interesting to see how the combination of upholstered elements with both wooden and marble table tops created layers of interest. In line with the trend demonstrated in EuroLuxe, the furniture exhibitors, whilst each remaining true to their own clear identity, showed a predilection for bronze and brass finishes. Design by UBER were especially impressed by designers such as Frato, Flexform, Aleal, Signorini and Coco, and Arketipo. The Salone also showcased numerous outdoor furniture exhibitors which seems to be a clear reflection of the emphasis now placed on seamless indoor
outdoor living. The bar is constantly being raised, with outdoor furniture becoming ever more chic and stylish. Furniture from suppliers such as Royal Botania, Tribu and Dedon are easily able to pass for indoor furniture, therefore offering a very sophisticated approach to outside spaces. Salone del Mobile is a visionary exhibition which shines a light on the art of design from around the world. Being at the leading edge of interior design, knowledge of global product innovation allows the team at Design by UBER to offer both their interior design clients, and their retail clients through their sister company Uber Interiors, the very best in design-led products from around the world. www.uber-interiors.com www.designbyuber.com
