My life ... K E L LY L O U I S E C H A P M A N , F O U N D E R O F K E L LY L O U I S E FLORAL ARTISTRY How would you describe yourself ? I would describe myself as a creative person, a skill which led me into the flower industry. I am totally self-taught and with determination, passion and hard work I have hand-built the business I have today which I’m very proud of. In all aspects of life, I would say I am a perfectionist, more so in my job as every detail in an event has to be flawless. One could be perceived as bossy or even stubborn, but the job gets done and completed to the highest standard. I have a taste for expensive and luxurious things which again is reflected in my work; my taste is timeless. Where is home? And work? Me and my husband David are currently in the process of building our dream house. We live close to our work unit in Knutsford, where all the magic happens! We travel all over the North and occasionally travel to do work in London and abroad. Name a few of your favourite places to be... We love to go for long walks I find that very relaxing stopping off for a coffee and watching the world go by. I also love a little trip to Hollies Farm Shop as I love all the fresh produce, and it’s a great place to grab a coffee. I like to support independent businesses locally as I think it’s important that we still have unique individually-owned shops. What did you want to be when you were younger? As a child, I always wanted to be an air hostess. I loved the idea of being so glamorous every day for work and travelling all over the world, which is a world away from my job! It’s definitely not glamorous. What inspires you? I am inspired by people who are successful in business but still humble as it shows they remember where they have

We love to create wow factor events/weddings and memories for clients that will last a lifetime

come from rather than where they are. I’m also inspired by people who are philanthropists, and givers, who need no praise. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I can do the crab and I am scared of birds and butterflies, anything with wings or long tails!

Who or what would you place in room 101? Society’s unseen expectations - forcing and moulding individuals away from their true selves due to social media. What was the last gift you gave someone? A lovely facial voucher. Your mastermind subject? Fashion. Tell us about some of the fabulous events you’ve been a part of We’ve been involved in some fabulous events over the year, each event is fabulous for so many different reasons. Our passion is obviously flowers and weddings however we do love parties as we can be so creative, experimenting with lots of other decor. We love to create wow factor events/weddings and memories for clients that will last a lifetime. I absolutely love my job even though it does take over my life and can be physically and mentally exhausting. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Live a private life and never announce anything before it’s signed sealed and delivered. Stay away from negative energy. klfloralartistry.co.uk

T h ere’s S ome t hing Abo Ab o ut M ar ary y Academy Award-winner, Julianne Moore on playing Mary Villiers, riding around in vans and Mary & George’s ‘insanely wonderful words’

A

udiences have long been fascinated by the inner workings and inner circles of powerful people, from Shakespeare to Succession, we love to see the mechanisms of commanding forces and the chaos they leave in their wake. Is it reassuring to see those held on pedestals reveal the messy, human experience of their life? Is it satisfying to see them get their comeuppance for nefarious, exploitative scheming? Is peeking behind the veils of perceived social standing, however outlandish and salacious the sights might be, and seeing the dirt, blood and sweat (metaphorical, or not) too tantalising to ignore? Speaking of tantalising… enter Mary & George. Joining the ranks of Lady Macbeth, Logan Roy and Claire Underwood, Mary Villiers is a new icon of serial scheming and power playing — even though she died almost 400 years ago. Pulling the

24

strings of her son George through his societal ascent, whilst maintaining her own upwardly mobile puppeteering of the royal court, Mary is an iconoclastic, unpredictable, dangerous figure performed with formidable magnetism by Julianne Moore. Her plot for social climbing sees her son quickly entranced by, and entwined with, the King (brought to voracious and vibrant life in a fabulously layered performance by Tony Curran) with Nicholas Galitzine’s George soon evolving from aggravated innocent to devious political and romantic conductor. These characters are beautiful and catastrophic forces of nature — less explored in history books, perhaps, but their legacy ripples through halls of power to this day. Their story, as told in Mary & George, reveals a drama that is historic and contemporary, filling in and riffing on a lesser

was utterly charming. He wasn’t great at academics, but he was great at dancing and entertaining people. She sees his charm and his great beauty and how attractive he is to other people.

When you first read the script what drew you to this character?

represented period of history and using it as an entry point to explore sexual, political, sociological and psychological complexities, often all at the same time. In looking to the facts of the past, about desires and duty and rulers and lovers, a story is uncovered that feels distinctly modern.

How would you describe Mary Villiers? In our story and historically, Mary Villiers was a person from a kind of middling aristocratic family, a mother to four children, and she was incredibly ambitious on behalf of her children. After the death of her first husband, who we portray as a brutal and difficult man, she’s been living in less than ideal circumstances. I think she’s looking for a way to educate her children and keep herself alive. Really the only way she’s able to do that is through her relationships with powerful men. When you think about what she managed to achieve, actually with very little help, she really left everyone set up very well.

There was something so outrageous about her, something so direct and unusual, and she seemed to have her own desire for power and for agency in a situation where she might possibly have none. It felt really unusual, clever and entertaining and an interesting challenge with wonderful people. And I was lucky enough to get it.

How is this not a typical period drama? It’s not a typical period drama because of the licence that it takes with behaviours and sexuality which we don’t ordinarily see in historical fiction. I think the production values are really high. It’s absolutely beautiful and opulent and a wildly entertaining romp through history.

How would you describe her relationship with her children? Well, what was interesting historically is that she tried to educate both of her sons, that she really thought, ‘How do I propel these kids forward? What can I do?’ And in her educating them, she learned that George 25

How did you go about playing someone like Mary? I think she’s written brilliantly by our writer DC Moore. He wrote a really interesting, compelling, very funny, ambitious woman. She’s clever, exciting and fun. So it was just a matter of settling into the language and the storytelling. And it was a pleasure to do that. It’s really wonderful to play somebody who seems to know what they want and doesn’t suffer fools to get it. I think it’s interesting what she achieved at a time when women couldn’t even own property, and the fact that she actually managed to be buried in Westminster Abbey. That’s a pretty amazing achievement.

George really evolves under Mary’s tutelage doesn’t he? Nick (Nicholas Galitzine) was so wonderful in his portrayal of this character. When you first meet him, he’s a young boy and he’s someone who just kind of wants to hang around at home and be with the local girl and doesn’t have a tremendous amount of ambition and doesn’t have a desire to be educated. What Mary sees in him is potential. He is beautiful

and charming and interesting and against his wishes, she sends him away to France and she says, ‘You’re going to be educated, and believe me, this is going to be good for you.’ But he goes to France and comes back with a different sense of himself and of possibility. Nick very beautifully modulates his performance so you see him growing up and becoming more aware of what his own potential is. But what’s interesting too is I think that Mary sees herself in George. She sees someone who is capable and because she doesn’t have the access that he does because she’s female, she uses him as proxy, but always feels very much that he will be her partner, that this is something that they’re creating together. But of course, as George gets older and gains more power and influence and his relationships develop, he starts to chafe under her direction and begins to take his own path. And so it ends up being a power struggle between the two of them.

The show features some incredible women. What was it like working with Nicola Walker, Trine Dyrholm and Niamh Algar? Oh my gosh, I was so lucky with the female talent. Nicola Walker blew me away. Our very first day together we had a long scene at a banquet table, 26

in. I enjoyed it so much I got everyone to come with me in the van – costume, hair and makeup and my dialect coach.

and we were seated opposite each other but so far away and I was so frustrated because I just wanted to talk to her. The minute she opened her mouth, I was just like, ‘Oh my God, she’s extraordinary.’ And Trine is such an accomplished actor, such a wonderful person, and really brought this beautiful quality to Queen Anne. And Niamh and I really hit it off right away. She’s got this tremendous energy and wonderful sense of humour and an ability to connect and just sort of light up the screen. And I think we all loved being together the few times that we were all together, because we weren’t always all there at the same time.

You mentioned that banquet with Nicola. Did you have fun with Mary’s incredible one liners?

What do you hope audiences will enjoy about Mary & George?

I think everybody loves historical fiction. You know, it’s interesting because there’s an element of fantasy to it, of wondering what it would be like if you lived during that time. What would your relationships be like? How would you dress? How would you behave? And it keeps a foot, obviously, in what happens historically, but it also allows you to experience history in a kind of a more vivid, live sort of way, through these recreations. And I think it’s wildly entertaining. I really do. The full series of Mary & George is available to stream now on Sky

Yes. I think the language that DC Moore wrote is just wonderful. It was challenging as well. Some of the things that people say are pretty elaborate and incredibly clever. But that was part of the joy of working on this, to be able to say those really kind of insanely wonderful words.

Did the high production values make getting into character easier? The production design is gorgeous. The costumes are wonderful. Annie Symons, our Costume Designer, is just tremendous and so talented, her department worked so hard, they had to churn so much out so very quickly. And it’s all handmade. As you watch Mary gain influence and power and her economic situation improves, you see it reflected in the way that she dresses, in the fabrics, decoration and jewels and how elaborate things become. It’s an indication of status or of identity. My dresses were so big sometimes that I couldn’t get into a car. So when we needed to drive from hair and makeup to the location they had to get a van that I could stand up 27

Prestons Expands Patek Philippe Presenc Presence in Wilmslow The Cheshire Magazine takes an exclusive tour of Prestons Wilmslow’s new Patek Philippe space, celebrating a friendship between this iconic watch brand and the Cheshire-based jeweller, that has now spanned two decades.

W

ilmslow-based jewellers Prestons, has this month unveiled a new expanded Patek Philippe space at its flagship Wilmslow showroom, reinforcing the strong partnership between both independent brands. Officially opened by Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe, during a recent visit to the UK, the 117m2 space introduces clients to one of the last independent, family-owned watch manufacturers and its iconic collections, across two floors. Designed in keeping with Patek Philippe’s distinct architectural style, the new expanded area features cream marble flooring and hammered bronze details throughout, with dark woods, gold cabinetry and comfortable, neutral upholstery. The ground floor presents client-focused serving areas which are seamlessly connected to Prestons’ art-deco inspired Wilmslow space. As clients ascend

30

the cream marble staircase, they are greeted by a comfortable and private VIP lounge, along with a secluded library overlooking the town’s high street. Adorned with historic, rare handcrafts prints from the Patek Philippe archives that demonstrate the brand’s remarkable heritage and artistry, the new space perfectly reveals Patek Philippe’s attention to detail and luxurious interiors. The new area also features a piece of engraved art, sculpted by a French artist whose work is only seen in a select number of Patek Philippe boutiques in Qatar, Dubai, Rome and now Wilmslow, making it the first UK boutique to do so. Patek Philippe took inspiration from mathematician Alan Turing, most known for his work to crack the Enigma Code during the Second World War. Turing was chosen as the inspiration for this piece due to his local connections, having lived in Wilmslow in his later life. His selection posed a

challenge for the artist due to the mathematical and technical nature of Turing’s work, however the result is a unique piece, with a variance of shapes and circles, inspired by the Enigma Coding. Of this latest opening, Karl Massey, Managing Director of the Prestons Group commented, “Our relationship with Patek Philippe is not just commercial, it is deeply personal. Two family businesses with the same objectives and values. Prestons are proud to have represented Patek Philippe in Cheshire for over 20 years and more recently in Norfolk. It was a great honour for us all to welcome Mr Stern, the President of Patek Philippe, to Wilmslow for the official opening of our new boutique in the presence of so many of our collector friends.” Adrian Lurshay, Managing Director of Patek Philippe UK added, “I feel honoured to celebrate our partnership with Prestons with the opening of the new Patek Philippe area at their Wilmslow store. Patek Philippe and Prestons have a long-standing relationship, and the same commitment to offer the finest ambience and the best service to our clients. The beautiful new space spread over two floors at the Wilmslow store reflects this strong and solid relationship.” Prestons Wilmslow, 13 Water Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5AE 01625 416330

What are you most excited about following the opening of new space? Our newly expanded space presents us with an expanded area in which we can introduce clients to Patek Philippe’s remarkable collections. Each watch tells its own special story, and it is a privilege to guide clients on their own Patek Philippe journey in such an incredible new space. It is also a proud moment for us, due to the uniqueness of the space, which demonstrates just how strong our partnership with Patek Philippe is. What makes Patek Philippe special as a brand? I would say it is their dedication to their creations. Patek Philippe are deeply invested in every timepiece that they make. They have made a commitment to service every single watch since 1839, and will continue that tradition for centuries to come. If they don’t have the parts, they’ll make them. That level of lifelong service sets them apart. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to learn more about the Patek Philippe collection? Part of the joy of picking out your first watch is learning about the whole collection. I would always recommend keeping an open mind, as the watch you initially fall in love with may not be the best fit once you see it in person. It is always best to have a selection of models that you may be interested in exploring. I’d always encourage new clients to visit us in store before making any decisions. The team and I are here to guide you through the Patek Philippe collection, and our new space is the perfect environment in which to experience these watches at their best.

ith collections setting the pace of the fashion seasons, Fall constitutes a particular period of reflection for Maria Grazia Chiuri, and an ongoing questioning that is constantly renewed. Each time, the wardrobe is revitalised by a series of pieces of which their unique construction, cuts, materials, and creativity have what it takes to meet all women’s needs. This Dior line is an opportunity to pay homage to New York, the metropolis that was given – as a gift from the French to the United States at the end of the 19th century – a statue which has since become the symbol of this incredible city. In Christian Dior’s autobiography, the chapter dedicated to his Paris-New York trip opens up a dialogue between the style capitals that Maria Grazia Chiuri highlights in two key prints: the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower that flourish in large format on numerous models. The bridge between both cultures is Marlene Dietrich, a charismatic, contrarian actress, attached to Dior, in life and on screen. Maria Grazia Chiuri drew inspiration from her to build a collection that fuses the Dior silhouette with the diva’s phantasmagorical presence and boyish allure. The tweeds used came directly from a selection of English menswear fabrics. In his Petit dictionnaire de la mode, Monsieur Dior wrote: “In the last few years, tweeds have extended their use even for dressy suits. I think they are extremely elegant.

32

To wear them in the country is a ‘must’. At one time, you could only get tweeds in a rather heavy weight but now you can get them in all weights and qualities and colours.” Marlene Dietrich’s masculine suits provoked scandal, asserting, let us not forget, a woman’s right to choose her attire as she pleases, a tie or a sleeveless vest, for instance: so many emblems that complement each other. Jackets are paired with wide-leg pants or below-theknee pencil skirts. The precious and sometimes very light dresses, recalling the style of the ‘40s, give a glimpse of the lingerie that turns out to be an essential part of the outfit. Fabrics such as hammered satin, crushed velvet and crepe are reinterpreted in a contemporary spirit. Some of the lace-encrusted slip dresses, often revealed beneath large, lined coats, are made from quilted nylon featuring the cannage motif. The embroidery evokes brooches and echoes the signature codes so dear to the founding-couturier: the star, the lily of the valley, the clover and the bee. The lace collars become veritable structural intarsias. As for knitwear, a virtuoso level of inventiveness has allowed multiple facets of its extraordinary plurality to be developed. A range of possibilities that celebrates the meeting of cultures. A conversation about freedom that gives shape and substance to whatever each woman chooses to be. dior.com

ASK THE EXPERT U N L O C K I N G T H E M Y S T E R Y: M E N O PA U S E A N D T H E M I N D DR DANCEY FROM ENIGMA HEALTHCARE "Am I having a breakdown?", "I keep forgetting simple words!", "Am I developing dementia?" These are the questions that echo through my menopause clinic, where women grapple with the lesser-known cognitive and mental health challenges of this life stage. At Enigma Healthcare Menopause Clinic in Tarporley, we're committed to offering a comprehensive approach to addressing menopause-related symptoms. While we're accustomed to the visual cues of menopause like hot flushes and night sweats, the profound impact on cognition and mental health often flies under the radar. Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can send cognition into a tailspin. Memory lapses, a haze of 'brain fog', and the struggle to find words are all par for the course. Processing speed slows, and verbal memory takes a hit, making multitasking a Herculean feat. And let's not forget the rollercoaster of emotions. Mood swings, anxiety, and irritability can become unwelcome companions on this

journey. For those already battling anxiety or depression, the menopausal transition can amplify symptoms, sometimes even exacerbating conditions like PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). Adding to the complexity, many women are navigating demanding careers, caring for children or grandchildren, and tending to elderly parents—all while grappling with disrupted sleep due to night sweats. It's a perfect storm that can strain coping mechanisms and strain relationships. Thankfully, research sheds light on effective interventions. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) emerges as a frontline defence, offering relief for mood disorders and cognitive changes in the majority of cases. But lifestyle adjustments play a pivotal role too. A diet rich in wholesome foods, regular exercise, and prioritising sleep can all bolster resilience during this tumultuous time. Additionally, cognitive behavioural therapy empowers women to navigate mood swings and anxiety by honing coping strategies and reshaping negative thought patterns. Crucially, women need support and guidance from healthcare providers as they navigate these challenges. At Enigma Healthcare Menopause Clinic, in Tarporley we're committed to offering a comprehensive approach to addressing menopause-related symptoms. Our goal? To empower women to optimize their health and wellbeing during this transformative phase of life. The Revolutionary Approach to Conquering Chronic Pain The specialist clinic making waves and changing lives where traditional therapies have failed

A

mid enormous wait times and a health service on its knees, people are looking for ways to manage chronic joint and muscle pain. But The Venard Clinic has a very different approach to traditional therapies - with astonishing transformational results. Venard Fong, owner of The Venard Clinic in Wirral, started his career as an Orthoptist, specialising in neuro-ophthalmology, correcting eye issues for his patients. Coupled with a background in martial arts, his international competitions led him to research and then qualify in pain and injury management. This unique combination of medical expertise and athletic ability birthed an innovative approach, where eyesight and the nervous system play a pivotal role in treatment. People who are looking for answers after exhausting all the usual routes usually end up in Venard’s clinic. By directly addressing the primary causes, clients get rapid and long-lasting pain relief without the need for ongoing maintenance sessions or daily exercises, saving them time and money. Venard suffered for years with lower back pain. He understands all too well how debilitating it can be to live with pain daily. This deep understanding has been the catalyst to building a business that can make impactful changes in the lives of his clients, even the ones deemed beyond help by doctors. He works with people whose

46

quality of life is affected by ongoing muscle and joint issues caused by sciatica, hip pain, bulging discs, fibromyalgia and fatigue, to name but a few. His work is bespoke and clients travel from all over the country to work with Venard at his clinic. Overseas clients fly in and in some cases, treatments can be done over video call. His integrated approach combines a philosophy to make a positive difference in his client’s well-being with cutting-edge technology and real-time data tracking, adding reassurance to clients that how they’re feeling after a treatment is not just in their minds. By utilising a unique and comprehensive assessment framework to map out how their body has been compensating, he can delve down to the root causes, repatterning the nervous system by showing it a better configuration to work correctly with greater efficiency. After enduring years of persistent pain down one side of her body, writer Anneliese sought help at Venard’s clinic, having found little relief from various traditional treatments including massage and physiotherapy sessions. Daily activities became challenging, limiting her activities through low energy and discomfort.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Wellness

Remarkably, after just one session, Anneliese was pain-free. Now, five years later, she continues to enjoy an active life, free from the chains of chronic pain. A business mentor and copywriter whose words have made his clients over one billion US dollars, Trevor was considering ankle surgery to solve his problems. After a day and a half in Venard’s clinic, his pain issues were solved and his life improved without the need to take time out of his packed schedule to go under the knife. James, a dynamic entrepreneur, faced the debilitating issue of plantar fasciitis that lingered for a year. Desperate for a resolution that fit his hectic lifestyle, he turned to the clinic, hoping for a quick solution. Just two sessions were enough to address his condition, allowing him to continue his activities without further interruptions. A year later, James was back at the clinic, this time with a shoulder issue that compromised his sleep and limited his ability to engage fully in family activities and gym sessions. Once again, the clinic’s efficient approach swiftly resolved his problem, restoring his range of motion and enabling him to dive back into his life, free from pain and full of energy. Chris Cook, a celebrated double Commonwealth gold medallist and former Olympian, found himself grappling with severe back pain that eroded the quality of his life. Throughout his career, he had grown accustomed to the routine of being ‘patched up’ to maintain functionality. However, the escalating severity of his condition plunged him into what he described as a “miserable existence.” The constant pain became an unwelcome backdrop to his daily responsibilities, from

his bustling work commitments to his hectic family life, affecting his mood and overall well-being. He reached out for help and found the treatment process straightforward yet also profoundly different from any previous medical experience. This new approach offered him not just temporary relief, but a genuine path to recovery. Results can be as fast as within a few hours, with a 95% success rate with his clients. Venard says: “I’m not a fan of the conventional maintenance model. I’m keen to give my clients their life back without them having to worry about the pain returning, or carving out the time for never-ending therapy sessions.” The process begins with a complimentary 30-minute call to chat through the issue, where Venard can assess if he can help. This is followed by an assessment session for a more in-depth exploration of what is causing the problem, and what improvements you can expect before discussing treatment plans to help you get to your desired outcome. t’s amazing to think that every relationship begins with a single encounter - one that may go on to become the foundation of a lifetime together. Some people are great at remembering every detail; weather, conversation, clothing, others just don’t have that knack - but we can all learn to be better at milestones.

Why milestones matter The great majority of any relationship is just…days. Nothing special happens, nothing memorable occurs. But those days add up to a meaningful, powerful structure and they’re punctuated by the significant days: first dates, introductions to family, anniversaries etc. How we celebrate these romantic milestones will depend upon our individual personalities, our cultures and our beliefs, but our ability to do so deepens our communication, creates shared memories and gives significance to all those other days that lie between our memorable moments. Being open to what our loved one sees as important can strengthen how we communicate and give us new ways to bolster our connection.

Traditional romance or innovative self-expression?

Gratitude and reflection

If you’re one of those people who loathes Valentine’s Day, and your partner is all about the hearts and flowers, don’t worry! Modern relationships are increasingly a balance of time-honoured traditions with highly personal ways of recognising and celebrating, what matters. That’s why communication is so important; hiring a hot tub for the weekend might work for the more pragmatic and practical partner while sprinkling the hot tub with rose petals meets the desires of a romantic for that traditional expression of love. If we use our imaginations, there are always ways to enrich our milestones in ways that work for us both!

The key to powerful relationships is the ability to bring gratitude to every aspect of our joint lives. Giving ourselves the time and space to find this gratitude is a reflective process; it shows us how we’ve grown, what we’ve overcome and creates a new impetus to continue the journey.

Intimacy and connection Every celebration, whether it’s a public statement of commitment or a private moment of connection has the ability to strengthen intimacy and enhance connection. Every milestone allows us to reflect on our journey to this point, creating deeper bonds and richer commitments through shared experiences.

Personalisation and thoughtfulness Milestones can be both public affairs and intimate moments - and tailoring every celebration to a couple’s personalities, preferences, and shared memories creates uniqueness. Bringing mindfulness to planning special moments can enrich our love, commitment and understanding. 48

Joy and celebration Not all milestones are necessarily positive, but finding the value of each significant moment, and celebrating the positive ones with joy and enthusiasm, can create the kind of energy that every relationship needs to thrive. Grand gestures are fantastic, but even simple acts of love have the power to illuminate the happiness, fulfilment and yes, joy, that a relationship contains.

Past, present, future Romantic milestones have a unique power to honour the past, whilst creating dreams for the future. They are a fantastic opportunity to shape the future while remembering what brought us to this point, propelling any relationship forward with love, excitement and shared purpose. selectservices.co.uk

Marathon Running

A

s a dedicated runner myself and self-proclaimed “decathlete” in my twenties, I was deeply immersed in the world of competitive running and the sheer enjoyment of hitting the pavement. Setting goals, embracing challenges, and relentlessly pursuing personal bests became my mantra. The allure of running’s addictive nature was undeniable. The benefits of running extend far beyond just physical. It’s a powerful stress reliever, clears the mind, and connects you with nature. Plus it enhances cardiovascular fitness, ensuring that every stride strengthens not just the body but also the spirit. The most exhilarating aspect of running is the rush of adrenaline that you feel through your body after conquering a tough run. It’s a feeling of triumph, a tangible manifestation of pushing beyond limits. My good friend Jimmy Irlam is among the fittest individuals I’ve encountered in Cheshire, having maintained an athlete’s lifestyle throughout his life. He pursued a career as a professional rugby player at a young age, with exceptional talent and determination. However, he faced a series of setbacks including 3 shoulder operations by the age of 20. Following his rugby career, Jimmy pursued his passion by establishing and managing his own gyms, where he personally trained clients. I’ve had the opportunity to train with Jimmy on numerous occasions, and his relentless dedication consistently pushed me beyond my perceived limits and comfort zones. Jimmy maintained a rigorous training schedule, hitting the gym every day, focusing primarily on strength training. Over time, he transitioned into focusing mainly on running, demonstrating remarkable prowess in the sport. Having only previously taken part in a handful of local 10km races, Jimmy set his sights on a formidable challenge: running the Six World Marathon Majors. These marathons are in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York, all to be raced in under 3 hours. Remarkably, he has already conquered 4 marathons, coming 500th out of 50,000 in New York with a time of just 2hrs 49mins! The Berlin and Boston Marathons are all that is remaining to finish his ambitious goal. With a resting heart rate of 36-38 bpm, it’s easy to see how much hard work goes into this running machine! 50

What motivated you to take on the enormous challenge of completing the six major marathons in the world? Due to previous injuries and surgeries, I have very little cartilage left in one of my shoulders which meant weight training which I’ve always loved became a massive struggle. During the Covid restrictions, I found running filled the void left by not being able to hit the gym like I used to. My first race was the Colshaw Hall 10km which gave me the target I needed to motivate me. As with anything, once I had completely that, I wanted a bigger goal.

What has been your most significant challenge? Have you faced any obstacles? Every Marathon has come with its own obstacles. Soon after setting my marathon goal, I had a heart complication and unfortunately, my Cardiologist removed me from the London Marathon, which was due to be my first. Luckily with careful monitoring I reshuffled the order of my marathon plans and managed to take part in Chicago the following year to get the ball rolling. Since then I’ve had all kinds of injuries that have nearly derailed me; from Achilles problems and more Covid, to damaging the plantar plate ligament in my foot 3 weeks before my latest run in Tokyo. This meant I couldn’t run at all leading up to it and haven’t been able to for 4 weeks since, so I’m still not sure how I got around and still under 3 hours to keep the overall goal alive. This is why marathon running is such a great challenge as it’s hard enough simply training for one, so when you throw other aspects in the mix, the achievement feels even better.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in all athlete’s performance. Can you share any insights into your diet and any supplements that you take to facilitate such a full on training schedule? My diet is clean all week, no cheat days although I enjoy a Sunday roast after a long run! I don’t eat processed food or drink alcohol.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Wellness

A typical day for me usually consists of: Breakfast - Coffee with organic whole milk followed by eggs on sourdough or oats. Snack - Blueberries and almonds or Brazil nuts. Lunch - Sardines (although my family hate the smell!) sweet potato and tenderstem broccoli. Snack - Puffed oats and whole milk. Dinner - Chicken or lamb, rice and mixed vegetables. After a tough run, I will take a post workout shake containing protein and carbs. I’ll only drink coffee early on and then plenty of water. I also have the odd kefir to help my gut. Daily supplements - Athletic Greens, vitamins B12, C and D, omega 3, iron and joint complex. Evening supplement - zinc and magnesium to help me sleep and give my body the nutrients it needs to rest and reset for training the following day.

What advice would you offer to fellow runners aiming to tackle ambitious challenges like yours? You’ve got to prepare in every way you can. Everything such as training, stretching, recovery, and diet all has to be working towards the goal. Discipline is also a major factor, not giving in on occasions when you get offered a late night out or alcohol goes a long way and for me is well worth the sacrifice. In my experience some people don’t run far enough in training, when you start out and aren’t running as fast, a 20+ mile run isn’t easy and takes a lot of time but give yourself enough of a build-up before a race to make sure the distance is in your legs and you’re confident come marathon day. Those last few miles are tough as it is so if you’ve not got near on a couple of occasions in training it won’t be enjoyable! I aim for five 20-24 mile runs in training but a couple will do fine if you are simply training to complete the distance. On the day, stay relaxed, stress-free knowing you’ve put in all the work. Run at your target pace and don’t be tempted to get caught up in the excitement and run too quickly. Save that burst of energy for the last 3 miles if it’s still there! I encourage anyone to have a go at completing a marathon as the sense of achievement is amazing and its something so many people don’t think they could do but its incredible how your body adapts if you start slowly from any point and build up over time.

What is your pre-race routine? How do you prepare mentally and physically for the marathon ahead? I’m totally obsessed with getting enough sleep to the point it used to stop me falling asleep! Now I’ve learned to relax and always target 8 hours a night. I wear a Coros Pace 3 to help me track everything from sessions to sleep. I also make sure I stretch every day, straight after my run doing 2 sets of 45 second holds for my back, hips, quads, hamstrings and calves. It takes around 20 minutes but is needed to offset the tightening caused by training, especially as you get older! I use the sauna 3 times a week for 20 minutes, but not before a tough session to avoid dehydration. I also take 10 minute ice baths twice a week and wear compression boots when anything is feeling tight, particularly my calves. Jonny Mellor, a 2:09 marathon runner has been helping me with fine tuning my training, that experience is such a benefit! I believe he will definitely help improve my PB.

Could you elaborate on your pre-marathon nutrition strategy? Two days before the race, I drop fibre out of my diet and eat plain white rice, oats and sourdough toast to ensure I don’t risk getting an upset stomach. I also exclude veg, nuts and fruits altogether, but continue to eat simple protein. I slowly introduce Maurten carb and electrolyte drinks to make sure I’m fully energised.

Post-marathon, what steps do you take to aid your recovery and ensure your body recuperates effectively? I start with a slow run to get the blood flowing and kickstart the recovery process. Followed by 4 days rest with steady walking. I don’t go back into anything other than the odd easy run until at least 3 weeks after. I find ice baths and saunas also help if introduced a few days after the race.

Once you’ve completed the six world marathon majors, how do you plan to celebrate this remarkable achievement? By setting another challenge! Maybe an ultra marathon but another goal for me is a sub 2-hour 30-minute marathon so I’ll likely aim for that.

You’ve ventured into creating your own running brand, Zur Running. Could you tell us more about it? The biggest annoyance I found when running my first marathon was with my clothing. I was uncomfortable, my vest was bouncing around, my gels were falling out and even my shorts were continually riding down! I began to design running gear around my experience and I’m always tweaking it to look for improvements. Zur Running was set up as a passion project rather than a money spinner and I love developing it as I train.

Weekl eekly y Boar Board d ing: Home fr f rom Home If you’re looking for an alternative to full-boarding options, maybe it’s time to consider the increasingly popular idea of weekly boarding – a helpful, cost-friendly bridge between the world of a day pupil and that of a full-boarder.

T

hese days, you want to know that your child is gaining a consistent, high-quality education, regardless of the external environment. While you know this is crucial for their personal development and educational journey, your choice can also depend on the school’s distance away from you and whether having your child permanently away from home during term-time is the right choice for them, or for you. When looking at independent school options, many families aren’t familiar with the idea of weekly boarding. This offers parents a much broader choice for their child, as they board during the week and return home at the weekends. Schools which were once considered to be too far away are now within reach. The school commute through the week is eliminated, freeing up more time for your other responsibilities and leaving the drive to and from school for a Friday and a Sunday.

Flexibility is Key Weekly boarding is the next logical step for many students, as they look to develop their independence and focus their time and energies on their academic and co-curricular commitments. Without the tedium of travel, they have the autonomy to make the most of their time, in the way that matters most to them. This move also provides you with a helping hand, giving you the flexibility to successfully manage your own work and personal commitments. When nearing the end of their school journey, the step of moving to university or away from home is an easier one for both parent and child, as they know they have the confidence and self-reliance to thrive.

Benefits of Weekly Boarding Weekly boarding gives children the opportunity to take advantage of a wide range of support, available both in and out of the classroom. They have the opportunity to develop bonds with students from many other backgrounds and nationalities and learn about their cultures. Boarders grow and learn within larger friendship groups, share experiences together and form life-long friendships. They are provided the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility, such as Head of House and learn to become more self-sufficient, whilst developing the skills to work together as a team. Here at Ellesmere College, all this

is done under the watchful eye of Housemasters and Housemistresses, with the support of a 24/7 sick bay and the nurture of Housemothers. Many students develop greater self-esteem, feel better prepared for the next stage in their lives and gain the tenacity to deal with the challenges of leaving the nest. Ultimately, weekly boarding is an option from which many parents, students and staff have reaped the benefits.

Above All…Boarding is Fun! Both weekly and full-boarders have great fun, they can spend the evenings with their best friends and enjoy a wide range of exciting and meaningful activities on offer. This evening-time enrichment includes co-curricular activities, such as sport, music and drama. There are also house activities, guest speakers and academic twilight sessions - something for everyone. For more information on the types of boarding available for your child at Ellesmere College, please call 01691 626 510 or email registrar@ellesmere.com ellesmere.com 57

5 Minutes with HELEN SPENCER M ANAGING PAR TN E R , W R PA R TN E R S What led you into your industry? I joined the accountancy industry 20 years ago as a HR Manager having recognised the need to reduce my working hours with a small family. Having spent a number of years in FMCG manufacturing I was attracted to working within the professional services area, where the development and engagement of people are the key driver of business success. I never could of imagined that 15 years after starting with the business I would become Managing Partner.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? You should never look down on anyone, unless you are helping them up.

What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt in business?

That your business will change and evolve, and an open mindset is essential to ensure that you don’t get “stuck” in doing what you have always done. If you are not being brave in challenging yourself and your business, you are going to fail, this is the biggest opportunity for learning. But, most importantly, surround yourself with great people.

Has there been a truly pivotal moment for your business? With a business that has over 100 years of

experience, there have been a number of pivotal moments. Our recent rebrand from Whittingham Riddell to WR Partners, gave us an opportunity to “reset” our business to ensure we are protecting the future of our clients, by providing quality advice to help them realise their goals. We are a relationship based business, and I believe our new brand reflects the way we work, together in partnership with our team and our clients.

If you are not being brave in challenging yourself and your business, you are going to fail, this is the biggest opportunity for learning

What are your plans for 2024 and beyond? We are relocating our Nantwich office into a modern office where we can offer a more exclusive experience for our clients and our team, ensuring that we focus on providing great client service. We are committed to building our growth and reputation across Cheshire with an ongoing investment programme. wrpartners.co.uk

MEET THE CHEF:

PAU L

MERRETT Chef-Director at Hilltop Country House What is your most popular dish? This is a huge customer favourite, and they won’t let me replace it! Its organic Scottish salmon sashimi style with a crispy shallot & chilli crunch, served with an avocado, lime & wasabi puree, and pickled black radish. What’s your first food related memory? My granny’s roast for sure. Every other Sunday we would visit and always have a roast – beef or lamb. She was a proper English home cook. Her and my grandpa had a big garden and grew all their fruits and vegetables. I think I realised later in life that I was hugely inspired by her cooking…pudding would have been a seasonal fruit crumble by the way, with Birds custard! When did you know you wanted to be a chef? When I saw my end of school exam results! I realised that university and a career as a rocket scientist were probably not going to happen! My mum told me to go and learn to cook. She said it was an essential life skill…still probably the best advice I’ve ever had. Describe your style in three words. All about flavour. What’s your favourite dish to create? There are too many to choose from. I tend to get wrapped up in certain dishes for a short while before moving on to the next. At Hilltop we are currently having fun experimenting with various local Cheshire cheeses to

make the perfect rarebit, which we serve with pulled treacle roasted pork belly. What are you most proud of in your career? I guess the answer should be winning 2 Michelin stars. Well actually strictly speaking I won 1 star twice. But honestly, I’d say writing books has been a bigger achievement. I’ve written 3 cookery books and it’s a massive commitment and a great feeling when you receive the published book. What are your favourite Cheshire restaurants? When I’m at Hilltop I always nip out for a bite to eat with the Head Chef Iain Winnard. I love Tapa in Bollington – a great local restaurant doing some funky food. I also really like the Picturedrome in Macclesfield, the only problem is I can’t get past the chicken ramen. Every time I go, I think ok I’m going to try something different… before picking up the app and hitting the ramen option! Are there any foods you just don’t like? Not really, though some combinations I find hard to embrace. Chocolate and orange is one example. The two flavours just don’t work in my opinion. I know there will be people reading this shouting “whaddabout Terry’s chocolate orange?” but they’re wrong and I’m right. Avoid. Do you do the cooking at home? I do! But don’t expect fancy restaurant style food. It's proper family cookery. Yes, I have an air fryer before you ask. And my £25 crockpot is my most used bit of kit! What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Come and join our kitchen team at Hilltop! We’re recruiting. You’ll learn lots and work with the very best produce available in Cheshire…failing that get yourself into a really decent kitchen with a renowned chef. Work very hard and move on to a new kitchen every 2 or 3 years. Work with as many different culinary styles as possible whilst you’re learning. yourhilltopwedding.com 63

ast month, the 2024 Formula One season kicked off to great fanfare in Bahrain. And, when it comes to celebrating in style, nobody does it like the F1. Any superfan will be able to tell you just how exhilarating it is to watch the action live from the track. The roar of the engines, the passion of the crowds and the drama unfolding on the track builds to a crescendo as the battle for the podium fires up. Not only this, but there’s added appeal to join in the F1 celebrations for us travel lovers. The races are held in some of the most spectacular cities across the world, from the glamorous streets of Monaco to the neon lights of Las Vegas and electric skyline of Singapore. So, while you’re there for the race, you can add extra time to your trip to take in iconic sights, whether that’s combining the Miami Grand Prix with a road trip down the Florida Keys, or the Ferrari-favourite Italian Grand Prix with a stay in Lake Como. However, I recommend the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finale in December to experience the year’s biggest and most impressive celebration. To make it even more special, our ITC brand, Spectate offers a premium Platinum Hospitality package, giving you access to their exclusive hosted suite with a private balcony and their F1 celebrity hosted brunch – previous guests have included Damon Hill and Jonny Herbert. I love the idea of surprising a loved one with an F1 trip, particularly if you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion yourself, such as a milestone birthday, anniversary or even a Fathers’ Day treat. With the help of the experts at Spectate, your entire holiday will be seamlessly tailored to your liking, with bespoke experiences added throughout. spectatetravel.co.uk

Our Experience

AT A GLANCE: • 185 bedrooms & suites • Duplex penthouse • Grand Ballroom • Meeting & event spaces for 6 to 300 • Madeleine cocktail bar • Isaac’s New York-style brasserie • Private gym • 24-hour room service

We arrived to a warm welcome from the front of house team, who attended to our luggage and swiftly checked us in. We were shown to our Grand Junior Suite on the 6th floor which was a large room with a four poster bed, seating area, sizable bathroom and the complimentary mini bar was a lovely touch. During our stay, we enjoyed afternoon tea at Madeline's. It was a fabulous experience in one of the opulent rooms just off the reception area, lots of people were celebrating special occasions or simply enjoying a cocktail which created a lovely atmosphere. Our evening was spent at Isaacs situated on the lower ground floor, which offered a cool diner/cafe vibe. We dined on a Thursday, in which they also had live music which was a real treat. The food and service were incredible. We couldn't have asked for a better location, within walking distance of everything including some lovely bars and restaurants next door including The Ivy, where we visited for lunch. There is so much to love about this hotel, it is perfect for a romantic getaway but also an ideal place to celebrate with friends and family. It was our first time visiting Birmingham for a leisure trip and would certainly look to visit again and stay at The Grand Hotel, 5* all around from us.

Final Thoughts The Grand Hotel Birmingham lives up to its name; the hotel effortlessly embodies the three pillars of luxury: location, design and service. Artworks scattered throughout adds to the property’s high-end appeal. thegrandhotelbirmingham.co.uk

DRIVE AD-VANTAGE ASTON MARTIN

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

Aston Martin, arguably the most famous of all the British car makers, has just revamped its new sports car, and it promises to be an absolute cracker.

I

f you want a beautiful two-seat sports car that’s as brilliant to drive as it is to look at, you’re surprisingly spoilt for choice, but the Aston Martin Vantage has to be among the most desirable options. Charmingly old-school in its manner and modern in its design, it has been the most beautiful thorn in the Porsche 911’s side for a number of years. So many years, in fact, that Aston Martin has developed a new model to take the fight to Porsche. It’s still a Vantage, and it’s still utterly jaw-dropping, but now it’s more powerful, more high-tech and, apparently, even better to drive. As part of that, Aston Martin has fettled the Mercedes-AMGsourced V8 engine, tuning it up to 656bhp, which gives the car a top speed of 202mph and a 0-62mph time of 3.4 seconds. Combine that with a new suspension set-up and a 50:50 weight

distribution, as well as a new and more high-tech infotainment system, and things are shaping up beautifully. Could this be the best sports car you can buy this year? Maybe, but there’s a new Porsche 911 on the way soon. The showdown is set to be immense. Aston Martin Vantage, £TBC, astonmartin.com 82

RETRO RENAULT For those rich in the birthday department, the Renault 5 will need no introduction. France’s answer to the Ford Fiesta was a huge hit, winning fans across Europe thanks to its handling, price and design. And now there’s a new one, albeit reimagined as a thoroughly 21st Century product. All-electric, with a choice of battery sizes and power outputs, the new Renault 5 E-Tech will have a compact footprint, relatively low weight and retro styling, as well as some eye-catching colour options. You’ll have to wait a while, though, as the first examples are set to arrive in the UK at the start of 2025. Renault 5 E-Tech, £TBC, renault.co.uk

TAYCAN THE MICKEY Just when you thought the Porsche Taycan was fast enough, Porsche went off and made it even quicker. That’s been done with this new, top-of-the-range Taycan Turbo GT, which produces an outrageous 1,018bhp from its two electric motors, and that sounds more than adequate. But clearly Porsche thinks differently, because for two second bursts, the Turbo GT can produce 1,092bhp. Much more like it. Choose the optional Weissach package and it’ll be around 75kg lighter than a standard Taycan Turbo S, thanks in part to the removal of the back seats, so it’ll get from 0-62mph in 2.2 seconds. But it’s also more aerodynamic, which makes it a weapon on the race track. Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, from £186,300, porsche.com

Is the most powerful Range Rover model yet also the most capable? James Fossdyke has been finding out

T

he idea of sticking the ‘Sport’ suffix on a Range Rover product seemed rather bold when it was first announced around 20 years ago, but it worked. Not only did the Range Rover Sport manage to feel marginally sportier than the standard ‘full-fat’ Range Rover, but it resonated with customers, becoming a key pillar of the Land Rover range. Over the years, the Sport has become ever more deserving of the name, to the point where the latest model is one of the best all-rounders on the market, merging luxury, off-road capability and comfort with surprising driver engagement and handling. It’s one of those cars that can be all things to all people. Yet Land Rover was clearly keen to improve the car’s sporting capability, because it has launched a new version of the Sport called the SV. A product of the British brand’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) department, it’s the most powerful Range Rover ever made, and Land Rover is promising the kind of capability that will allow it to compete with the likes of the Lamborghini Urus on a race track. Not that you’d know it just by looking. Yes, sporty details are there if you look closely, but for the most part, it just looks like a Range Rover Sport. There’s nothing wrong with that — it’s a good-looking thing — but some customers would probably want some less subtle upgrades than the SV’s vents, wheels and exhaust pipes provide. Especially when it’s competing with the likes of the Aston Martin DBX707 and the Lamborghini Urus, both of which are distinctive and eye-catching. And don’t be fooled; the Sport SV is very much competing with these cars, as well as the Bentley Bentayga and the most powerful versions of the Porsche Cayenne. That’s not just because Land Rover is promising dramatic performance, but because the Sport SV is every bit as expensive as these cars. The test car we drove had a list price of more than £190,000. It obviously hasn’t put customers off because all the Edition One cars slated for delivery in 2024 have been sold already, but it does mean we’re holding the SV to higher standards than a conventional Range Rover Sport. Which is why we find the car’s cabin a bit disappointing. Not because it isn’t stylish — it looks every bit as good as that of the standard Range Rover Sport, because it’s more or less identical. Sure, you

can have some carbon-fibre decorative trim and there’s a sporty steering wheel, but otherwise it isn’t much different. There is one defining feature, though, and that’s the new seats. They’re beautifully sculpted, but the big news is the speakers inside the padding that shake the seat in time with your music. Apparently, it’s supposed to lower stress while maintaining alertness, but it just made us feel nauseous. It isn’t the only slightly odd addition to the Sport SV, either. Land Rover is also selling a lightweight carbon package that was fitted to our test car, and apparently makes a sizeable difference. With carbon-fibre wheels, brightly painted carbon-ceramic brakes and even carbon lettering on the bonnet, our test car weighed 76kg less than a standard car, but it still tipped the scales at almost 2.5 tonnes. And the car was weighed without occupants and with only a part-filled fuel tank. Get in and fill it up, and you’re looking at something that weighs the best part of 2.6 tonnes. To haul that weight, Land Rover had to give the Sport SV an incredibly potent engine, so rather than employing sister company Jaguar’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8, which was used in previous highperformance Range Rover Sport models, Land Rover just phoned up one of the best engine makers in the business: BMW. As a result, the SV has the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine from a BMW M5 Competition sports saloon, but Land Rover has squeezed an extra 10hp from it, for a total of 626bhp. That’s quite a lot, and when paired with a super-smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, it gets the two-and-a-bit-tonne SV from 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 180mph. That’s sports coupe performance from a big 4x4. But while the figures are very impressive, the experience doesn’t quite match them. Yes, it’s quick.

85

Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine

Range Rover Sport SV Price from: £185,360 Engine: 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol Gearbox: Eight-speed automatic 0-60mph: 3.6 seconds Top speed: 180mph Power: 626bhp

Extremely quick for something so big. But it doesn’t feel quite as rapid as the figures suggest. Maybe it’s the slight lack of character from that BMW engine, relative to the Jaguar V8, or maybe it’s the soundproofing or perhaps even the car’s size, but it doesn’t feel all that fast. The advantage of all that, though, is that the Sport SV feels effortless. The V8 engine doesn’t make much more than a grumble at everyday speeds, and it requires just a twitch of your right toe to make strikingly brisk progress. Combine that with great insulation in the cabin and the car is hugely quiet and serene at motorway speeds, which makes it really relaxing on a long drive. The sensation of always having power in reserve is helpful, too. The sense of relaxation is only increased by the comfort, which is bountiful. The Aston Martin DBX707 is an incredibly comfortable sporty SUV, but the Range Rover Sport SV is better. In fact, despite its massive 23-inch alloy wheels, it’s as comfortable on the motorway as the standard car. It doesn’t quite glide as well as the bigger Range Rover models, but it’s very close. Somehow, though, the SVO division has managed to make it handle in a way that shouldn’t really sit alongside all the car’s

86

other qualities. The clever air suspension system keeps the car from lean in corners impressively, to the point where the car doesn’t suffer much body roll at all, even when you’re pushing hard on a race track. And custom-made tyres mean the grip on offer is incredible, so the car feels more like a hot hatchback than a 4x4. Yet it’s still immense off-road. Admittedly, Land Rover recommends removing the front aerodynamic ‘splitter’ — a task that requires a screwdriver — before heading off-road to avoid expensive scrapes, but the car comes with all-season tyres as standard and it gets all the off-road gizmos you get from a standard Range Rover Sport. Clever traction control that responds to the terrain, a system to control speed down hills without locking the wheels — it’s all there, and it all works a treat. Even the huge power output helps, allowing the car to clamber over boulders with little more than tickover. Overall, then, the Range Rover Sport SV is brilliant. It may not be the most characterful high-performance SUV out there, but it has arguably the greatest breadth of capability of anything on the market. Whether you need an off-roader, a luxurious family car or a sports car, it’ll do the job at least as well as anything else, and often better. The only problem is the slight lack of drama, which means it fails to justify the gargantuan launch price alongside rivals from Lamborghini and Aston Martin. That said, it’s still a fabulous feat of engineering, and one that demands respect.

riginally launched in the UK in the 1880s, steel windows have been installed in countless homes up and down the country. However, over the years the quality and performance of this type of window have been heavily criticised and shrouded by a number of misconceptions. As modern interior trends continue to follow a minimalist industry style - which steel windows achieve with ease - MD of leading steel window manufacturer, Crittall Windows, is tackling the most common myths to reveal the truth about modern steel windows. #1 - Steel windows are draughty and not energy efficient The biggest misconception about steel windows is related to their performance, with many homeowners believing that the products are cold and draughty and therefore, won’t keep homes warm in the winter months. However, this isn’t the case as Russell Ager, MD of Crittall Windows, explains. “Thanks to incredible advances in window technology, a traditional steel window can deliver excellent thermal insulation properties that match rival window materials. “At Crittall Windows, our most popular steel windows feature an effective weather stripping system, to provide better protection against draughts, and are available with double or triple glazing. Both of these developments with the product mean people can feel confident their home is well insulated all year round.” #2 - Steel windows are expensive and require a lot of maintenance Another popular misunderstanding about steel windows is

94

that they’re an expensive, high maintenance product which requires lots of care and attention. But again, this isn’t true. “Quality steel windows that have been manufactured to a high standard are incredibly durable and long lasting,” adds Russell. “While the initial upfront cost may be higher than other windows, their longevity means they’re sure to last a lifetime - making the long term cost incredibly competitive. As a steel window manufacturer, we’ve seen examples where our products have lasted 100 years before they’ve needed restoring. This is because, as one of the strongest and most durable materials, steel windows require little maintenance throughout the years. “To guarantee longevity, at Crittall Windows, our products are galvanized and finished with a factory applied polyester powder coating which is much tougher than conventional paint. consistent and vibrant colour across the metal, but it also provides a layer of protection against corrosion, scratches and chips making it an incredibly economical and long lasting solution. “As a general rule of thumb, if you keep your steel windows clean and the moving parts well-oiled, you’ll be able to enjoy them in your home for many decades.” #3 - Steel windows are difficult to customise One other reason why people are put off from investing in steel windows is because they believe they’re difficult to customise. However, steel windows come in a range of sizes, configurations and colour options making them an incredibly versatile product. “The steel windows that we manufacture today come in a variety of sizes and shapes because of our extensive range of profiles. This gives homeowners across the country the flexibility to find a design that perfectly matches the style of their home,” comments Russell. “Renowned for large expanses of glass, slim frames and sightlines, steel windows look incredible in both traditional and contemporary homes. Plus, with an impressive choice of colour finishes now available, homeowners can completely customise their new steel windows.” Another fantastic advancement with steel windows is that they are no longer predominantly used as external windows, giving homeowners even more choice than before. “As interior trends continue to evolve, we’ve seen a big increase in homeowners installing interior steel windows to divide their living spaces in order to reduce noise or create more privacy throughout their open plan property. This is a fantastic solution that not only looks impressive but also truly transforms internal spaces.”

Timeless style and lasting value Although for many years misconceptions have surrounded the performance and quality of steel windows, advancements in technology mean that a high quality steel window manufactured today perfectly combines traditional style with modern performance. “As a steel window manufacturer, we take pride in offering our customers products which remain true to the original steel window design featuring slimmer profiles but that also deliver incredible thermal performance, last a lifetime and can be crafted to accommodate a range of sizes, styles and colours,” explains Russell. “What’s more, our products help to keep homes well protected against unwanted intruders thanks to the multi-point locking systems which has been tested to the required Enhanced Security PAS 24 standard.” If you’re on the hunt for replacement windows for your home, why not invest in those that offer timeless style and lasting value? heshire born Frazer Fearnhead, is a multi-awardwinning entrepreneur. Pre-Covid, he was CEO of a successful property company in Altrincham. Unfortunately, during Covid the company couldn’t trade and ran into serious cashflow problems. Rather than struggling to rebuild it, he decided he’d had enough of the stress of being a CEO. For many years he’d dreamed of living in Mallorca. So, at 54, he decided not to wait any longer to make that dream a reality.

Can Brits still live in Mallorca after Brexit? Yes. Absolutely. It isn’t as straightforward as it was, but there are visas available if you want to spend more than six months a year here.

Is it easy to buy property? Many people are aware of the allure of Mallorca. It’s the jewel of the Mediterranean and attracts numerous well-known celebrities (Taylor Swift is currently house hunting here). Unfortunately, the property market can be a bit of a dangerous place. There are problems with illegal building works, dodgy dealings by sellers and estate agents, strict planning laws and under-the-table payments are still sometimes demanded. It’s hard (especially if you live overseas) to find someone you can trust. We had many hurdles to overcome to find our perfect home. We flew over several times and viewed over 40 properties before we found our ideal one.

Has it lived up to your expectations? It’s absolutely wonderful living here. We live ten minutes from gorgeous beaches. We have a pool and a large garden with great views. I love the ‘slow-living’ pace of life here. Because it’s sunny most days, people are happier, friendlier and more relaxed.

How do you spend your time? Well after seven months of just playing padel, powerboating and drinking far too much, I wanted to get back into doing something though just part-time. I’ve got a property background and I’ve bought and sold a few properties in Mallorca over the years. I realised I’d made good contacts and learned many things that I could use to help others. So, last year, I started a property consultancy that helps people navigate the real estate minefield, avoid costly mistakes and find their perfect property in Mallorca. There are loads of estate agents in Mallorca already. But they represent the seller. We don’t have any listings and we solely represent the buyer’s interests. On their behalf, we source property (often off-market), deal with estate agents, negotiate purchase terms, supervise lawyers, manage visa applications and deal with the bureaucracy needed to own property here. Our clients are all busy, successful people and our service saves them time, money and stress, allowing them to focus on the enjoyable aspects of their property buying journey. Given that our service, in most cases, needn’t cost them anything, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.

Anything else? I’m currently writing a book to be published later this year entitled ‘The Insiders Guide To Moving And Living In Mallorca’. mallorca-blue.com
