My life ... ROBIN TUDOR, HEAD OF PR & COMMUNICATIONS AT LIVERPOOL JOHN LENNON AIRPORT How would you describe yourself ? Hardworking, committed and professional but always valuing a work/ life balance that maintains plenty of family time and ‘me time’ too. I tend to be a ‘glass half full’ sort of person both professionally and personally and quite laid back about most things – though my wife might disagree if my beloved Liverpool lose! Where is home? And work? Home is in Frodsham where we’ve lived for the past 30 years. A native of the area, working away ‘down south’ originally but returning to work at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, where I have also spent my career for the past 30 years. What did you want to be when you were younger? I grew up in the years of the moon landings and the first Star Trek TV series and wanted to be an astronaut – but reality soon kicked in and whilst not reaching for the stars in a space suit, I did end up with a career in aviation, that kind of has a link via all things aeronautical. Name a few of your favourite places to be… We love to support our local businesses and a coffee in Frodsham’s Whitmore and White and a few pints in some of my local pubs are always some of our simple pleasures and firm favourites after a long week. The best steaks for miles around can be had at Grill@31 also in Frodsham, which is our ‘go to’ for special occasions. Further afield, we love North Wales – both for walking and I do a bit of mountain biking too. If we get some decent weather then the beaches at Harlech or Newborough on Anglesey are amazing and are like being in the Mediterranean. When it comes to overseas, we’ve had some lovely family holidays in places that are so easy to get to these days (from Liverpool John Lennon Airport of course!) such as Majorca, the South of France and a recent favourite – Kalkan in Turkey.

I tend to be a ‘glass half full’ sort of person both professionally and personally...

What was the last gift you gave someone? A bottle of our favourite local Cheshire produced Three Wrens Bison Grass Gin for my wife for Valentine’s Day (as much for me as it was for her). It sounds a bit of a weird flavour I know, but it really works!

Tell us a secret/fun fact? Our youngest son was born on the back seat of our car in the car park at the Hapsford Service station by the M56 near Helsby, because we didn’t make it to the hospital in time. In an incredibly fortunate twist of fate, my mother-in-law chose to come to the hospital with us and she was a retired mid-wife (from about 40 years earlier!) and it was she who helped to deliver our son, with him popping into the world just before the ambulance arrived. I spent most of the time trying to get the Travelodge there to supply me with towels and hot water – but they weren’t interested so I ended up pacing up and down beside the car. I spent a fortune in Halfords afterwards on cleaning products for the car interior too! What’s been your biggest life lesson? When you think things can’t get any worse for you – there’s a good chance that others are having a far more difficult time that you are. liverpoolairport.com

What or who inspires you? Instead of coming up with some iconic popular leader, entrepreneur or innovator, to be honest it’s probably my parents. Instilling certain values in me and making sure you treat others as you’d like to be treated were hallmarks of my upbringing that I’ve tried to replicate in my personal and professional life.

A insle insley y ’s

Nati onal Tru Natio Tr ust Cook Off Chef and TV favourite, Ainsley Harriott returns to our screens, in his brand-new series airing now on ITV1 and ITVX

T

he ten part series was filmed at three National Trust locations, famed for their abundant kitchen and walled gardens: Blickling Estate in Norfolk, Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire and Tyntesfield in Somerset. Ainsley and his chef friends cook al fresco in the walled kitchen gardens of the UK’s finest National Trust stately homes. In each episode, Ainsley Harriott is joined by two guest chefs in the kitchen gardens of the historic estates who he will challenge to create and cook recipes using the bounty of the garden in an attempt to win the accolade of ‘Dish of the Day’ whilst celebrating the abundance and beauty of fresh British produce grown by the Trust’s team of staff and volunteers. Alongside the fun of outdoor cooking and friendly competition, Ainsley meets the staff and volunteers of the Trust, and finds out about the work they do to maintain the gardens and estates - picking up handy gardening tips along the way. What can viewers expect from ‘Ainsley’s National Trust Cook Off’ and what’s so special about collaborating with the National Trust? I think the real beauty of visiting and cooking at some of these amazing National Trust establishments was

24

being able to experience the real detail that goes into preserving them. They are magnificent standalone properties. Every time I walked in, I would think to myself, ‘this is beautiful’ - and you can understand why people love visiting these places, because they are not just gardens, they’re a sanctuary where nature meets community. Because of the nature of the layout, each of them have their own south facing walled gardens - so they get a lot of sun, which they’re able to control. During the series, people will be able to see, for example, how the gardeners place doors to create a flow of air to help the growth of plants or vegetables. There’s a lot of fascinating detail - it’s a bit like Alice in Wonderland! Everywhere that we cooked, in all the different locations, we had amazing kitchen gardens. We brought along the equipment - all the beautiful barbecue grills, outdoor pizza ovens and so on - and it was wonderful, because it just brought the kitchen into the gardens. It’s fantastic to

see all the diversity of produce and there really is something for everybody. I enjoyed the space and I enjoyed the quality of the produce that I was cooking with. To be able to pick it out of the ground 50 yards away from where you’re actually cooking ... Well, it just makes you feel good. You’re used to cooking and exploring different cuisines in different countries, but what was so different about cooking al fresco in the UK and using that fresh produce straight from the gardens? There’s just something about al fresco eating - it’s so so different. Your appetite grows like never before because you’re outside and you tend to feel perfectly comfortable eating with your fingers, don’t you? But for me, it’s the freshness of it. When I was growing up, you had to go down to your local market or store where the potatoes were muddy, the carrots were muddy and everything had a little bit of soil on it! But it was natural. I remember the famous Indian chef Cyrus Todiwala, who was one of the guest chefs on the programme, saying that it was the first time he had ever pulled an onion from the ground and then cooked it. There was a genuine excitement from him and I knew exactly what he meant. My mother was really green fingered and so I know

what it was like to have beans and lettuce growing, also corn and courgettes, because that’s what she used to do. Even until her dying day, she still had a little vegetable patch in her back garden, so I’m used to having things that have come straight out of the ground or been picked from a tree. She used to say, ‘above the ground, you put it in hot water and below the ground, you put it in cool water.’ It’s wonderful. It’s wonderful for the viewers to see, as a lot of kids today think that meat, fruit and vegetables come from a fridge in the supermarket they don’t really see the source and there’s something quite exciting about it. Tell us more about the guest chefs that you have on the show with you! Can you tell us who produced your favourite ‘Dish of the Day’? Now that is a tricky one. It was a fantastic challenge for everybody. There are 20 different chefs, as we have two guest chefs on every programme. They would come along and I would say, ‘you’ve got to go and pick something from the garden that might enhance your score and maybe give you an opportunity to win

25

Feature | The CHESHIRE Magazine

today’s challenge’ - and they couldn’t wait to go for it! They would love walking around to find the ingredients, as they don’t get to that very often. They’re normally in a kitchen, underground, where they order the ingredients, they get them delivered and then they get on with the cooking. So for them, it was a welcome escape, stripping it back to reality. It was back to nature cooking, which was genuinely exciting. What 3 courses would you serve for a dinner date? If I’m honest, I don’t ever really get to dessert because I’ve already won her over after the main course. I should ask my partner really, because anytime you do a cookbook or anything like that, your partner gets the benefit of trying everything and they also tell you when they don’t like something, which is really embarrassing! I think for starters it would be my butternut squash, stilton and pecan pastry rolls, which I cook with a little pea or watercress salad on the side. They are lovely with a bit of onion cheese inside and some nigella seed on top. For the main course, I would probably go down the fish route. Perhaps I’d cook a beautiful fresh crab pasta with spaghetti. Anything with spaghetti really - or maybe crab and lemon linguine with pangrattato. You get this lovely crispy, crunchy topping and if you share it, who knows, you could be heading towards a Lady And The Tramp moment as you get closer. Dessert has to be something chocolatey. I do a lovely chocolate sponge tray bake with salted caramel sauce. These are all taken from my cookbook, Ainsley’s Good Mood Food, of course. 26

You’ve been a TV chef for many years now, do you still get the same enjoyment out of it now and how do you keep your recipes fresh? I still get a great buzz out of it. I think it’s because food is something that we deal with every day and, as you can see in the series, we have all this wonderful seasonal produce around us. I’m really one of the lucky ones. And even though it’s a bit of a roller coaster ride, where someone else can come along and be flavour of the month or year, the fact that I’m just part of that and the fact that I can still entertain our nation and come up with some lovely ideas to make us more knowledgeable about food is enough. Not everybody wants to cook but as I said to someone the other day, it’s not just about cooking, it’s about the fact that when you go out to a restaurant everybody now knows what different foods are. We’ve all made food a lot more accessible. We’ve raised the standards. You used to go to a pub and you could only get scampi in a basket but now, it’s kind of opened up to all sorts of possibilities, because we’ve demanded it. And if you ain’t no good, guess what, you close down very quickly. People don’t put up with nonsense anymore - they talk and they share their experiences, so you’ve got to be on it. Everyone’s a judge or critic, constantly rating everything and giving scores and endless feedback.. So you’ve got to be on the game. And I also have to give huge credit to the people that I work with. It’s having people around you that inspire you. And don’t be frightened to cook for one another! Don’t be frightened to say, ‘Come over. Let’s do a meal.’ Someone once said to me, ‘What’s your favourite meal?’ and I said, ‘Bringing people together’. There’s nothing greater than sitting around with people and putting some food in the middle of the table. That for me is the greatest gift. It’s a wonderful feeling. Ainsley’s National Trust Cook Off is airing on ITV1 and ITVX now.

An Aromatic Scented Splash Introducing an unforgettable new unisex fragrance, set to be the scent of summer – ‘Swimming Pool’ by BIBBI Parfum. Swedish creator Stina ‘Bibbi’ Seger came up with the fragrance during one of her meditation practices when she was transported to a natural swimming pool in the south of Italy, believed to have healing powers. Herbs surrounded it, and the water and air were thick with a beautiful scent of basil and mint. ‘Swimming Pool’ is inspired by intensely aromatic, refreshing waters infused with invigorating eucalyptus, menthe, and ginger. he first trip away together has become a big deal - part of the story of a successful relationship and a comedy trope for every romcom where the couple discover they are completely incompatible. But your first romantic getaway doesn’t have to be stressful - our complete guide helps you make this and every other romantic break into a success.

Discuss your ideas We all have expectations, and sometimes they don’t match up. Talking in advance can help you understand how your ideas of the perfect holiday might not align. You might be all about relaxation whilst your partner is committed to adrenaline and adventure, but don’t worry! By understanding each other’s needs and each compromising a little, you can still create an ideal getaway with elements for you both.

Decide a budget Talking openly about money is key to happy relationships, and your first trip away is a great place to start. Work out

likely costs together, create a plan and agree a budget - while you can’t plan for everything, having a clear financial understanding is the basis for future trust.

Pick the perfect destination You know what you both want from a holiday, and you’ve agreed a budget; that makes picking your destination much simpler. Make sure you’re catering to both your needs, do some research and create a shortlist. If you choose a destination that works for you both, you’re much more likely to have an amazing time than if one of you gives way to the other.

Plan activities The most successful romantic weekends are a blend of exciting activities, relaxing downtime and space for spontaneity. Booking in some key events means that you can plan for memory making, including pictures and videos, without spending your whole time documenting your trip and failing to live in the moment. Allowing time for the unexpected also means that you can enjoy the random, wonderful moments that nobody can predict.

Be a perfect packer Packing early avoids stress, and checking online what others consider to be essential items for your trip can help you be the perfect packer. Plan ahead for weather and activities and maybe 48

include a couple of surprises for your partner: a new book, a special outfit for a romantic dinner or a favourite scent.

Disconnect to reconnect Consider taking a digital detox during your getaway. If you can agree some guidelines for screen use, you may find you end up with more quality time and fewer moments where one of you feels neglected.

Navigate personal behaviours Gone are the days when couples were married before they discovered each other’s annoying habits. However, the first getaway can be the time you realise that your partner has some challenging behaviours: snoring, leaving the bathroom a mess, dawdling around in their robe all morning etc. Be prepared for such minor annoyances and decide which need to be addressed and which can be accepted as just an idiosyncrasy. Plan personal time apart so quirks don’t become constant irritations, and remember you may have a few odd little behaviours of your own to help you keep a sense of proportion! selectservices.co.uk

his year, I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of ITC, as we celebrate our 50th year of creating tailor-made travel experiences. Since our beginnings in 1974, we’ve seen the world of travel change in many ways, whether that’s the countries that are accessible to us, or the type of experiences we value most. So, as we look to the future of travel, what are the upcoming trends to consider for your next getaway? For many of us, travel is becoming more and more about packing in as many experiences as possible. And, there are so many different ways to do this. For your winter sun escape, you could dip your toe into the world of Caribbean island-hopping, discovering

the personalities of multiple islands in one holiday. Or, combine your next city break with a live sport event, such as Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in Paris, or the iconic Palio di Siena. We’re also seeing more people looking for ‘gourmet getaways’, whether that’s a tailor-made tour through Vietnam with authentic cooking classes, or a trip to Moldova to sample under-theradar local wines. Cruising is an experience that has changed significantly over the years, with smaller luxury vessels, river cruise boats and expedition ships making once inaccessible regions easy to explore. I love the idea of combining an Alaskan cruise with a journey on board the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff, or boarding a Havila cruise to see the fjords or northern lights in Norway. As we look to become more sustainable, so do many of our travel plans. Africa and Latin America in many ways lead the way in this area, with eco-lodges that put the surrounding environment and communities first. If you’re a wildlife lover, there’s nothing more valuable than the opportunity to help preserve the planet for future generations while experiencing it first-hand yourself. inspiringtravel.co.uk

Princess Street in central Manchester is where you’ll find Whitworth Locke. It’s mere minutes away from both Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly Station if you’re making your way by train. The area is surrounded by an eclectic array of bars (Refuge, Kampus) and restaurants (including the newly opened Maya, The Beeswing), a host of galleries and is also next door to the city’s vibrant Gay Village.

Each studio and suite is designed to revolve around Locke’s designer living spaces, offering guests plenty of space and comfort. The set up for my room lends itself to those working away, with ample space to work, create in the kitchen and unwind at night. The room came with cocktail maker if you're creative in that way. If, like me, you're not, there's a fully functioning bar downstairs waiting for you. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you need for a short stay and there are coffee/tea facilities available downstairs near reception. Rooms are done out in blush pink with brass finishes on bedside tables, window sills and even the coat hangers. The bathroom was modern and perfectly sized for a short stay.

Set amid five acres of landscaped gardens, the resort is close to five different Championship golf courses. Located in five acres of glorious manicured gardens in the popular ‘Golden Triangle’ area of Algarve, adjacent to the prestigious Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course, the resort is also a free shuttle bus away from Vilamoura Marina and Falesia private beach, with Central Vilamoura only a kilometre away.

The comfortable guest rooms enjoy large balconies or terraces and some of the rooms and suites overlook the nearby golf courses or the resort’s lush gardens and pools. You can upgrade to a Family room or suite for more spacious accommodation, or choose the One- or Two-Bedroom Apartments providing a separate living room and a fully equipped kitchenette.

Food & Beverage Moscada hosts your buffet breakfast, which you can enjoy on the terrace with a fresh juice. This restaurant also presents seasonal indoor and alfresco themed evening buffets throughout July and August. Listen to the sound of the resort’s waterfalls as you sample delicacies from the Mediterranean Barbecue at Aquarela Bar and Restaurant. Vilamoura is considered to be Portugal’s golfing capital, with five well designed courses offering different levels of difficulty close to the resort. The five golf courses include Old Course, Pinhal, Laguna, Millennium and the Arnold Palmer’s Victoria where the Portugal Masters takes place. The Kids Club offers treasure hunting, beach games, table games, tree houses, sports challenges, competitions, video games, and a special menu for them.

Our Experience Hilton Vilamoura is a fun filled hotel, ideal if you are a family with children of any age. Offering a large swimming pool and an adults only pool, Kids Club, food and drinks to suit all tastes and friendly staff that are always on hand to help in any way they can. Our huge suite with a lovely large balcony allowed us to sunbathe or sit more formally at the table to enjoy room service and an evening drink, which we did many times. We loved the gorgeous luxury spa onsite, accessed by leaving the reception and entering the building opposite so you enjoy a true spa experience and do not feel it’s an in-house hotel spa. There was an endless list of treatments to choose from in a lovely tranquil and calming environment, just what we needed. This was probably our favourite part of the holiday. Much to my partner John’s disappointment we didn’t get to try out any of the five nearby golf courses but we spoke to many guests who said it was superb, giving us a reason to return. hilton.com

My Experience What a pleasure it was to stay at NH Collection Dubai

The Palm, located in a perfect position, on the beach and over the road from Nakheel Mall one of our favourite places to shop when visiting Dubai After a warm welcome, we were shown to our spacious room, situated at the front of the hotel. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered stunning views across the Arabian Sea, Dubai Marina and the Dubai Eye. The popular hotel presented several areas to visit, each with its own charm. Seven Sports Pub & Bar brought the energy and fun, showing a mix of sports throughout the day and offering a variety of food and drinks. View 180, had a more formal feeling and this is where we enjoyed a refined evening meal, perfect for a date night. Revo Cafe offered a relaxed atmosphere and more casual food menu and - most importantly - direct beach access with various areas to soak up the sun. We spent the majority of our time at the infinity rooftop pool taking in the city views whilst sipping on a cocktail and lounging on the sunbeds in the water. By night, the area transformed into a place to party with the resident DJ keeping revellers entertained until the early hours. This was our first time at a NH Collection hotel and after this wonderful experience, we are looking forward to visiting other resorts. NH Collection Dubai The Palm has so much going on you need never leave. nh-collection.com 69

When the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen was first invented, it was built for German military purposes, at a time when people were more worried about what was emitted from the front of tanks than the back of cars. So it seems strange that the car that became the big, bold G-Class is now going electric. Mercedes claims to have made it more aerodynamic, which feels like putting a spoiler on a house brick, and there’s a 580hp electric powertrain, which doesn’t sound all that efficient either. But it’ll do almost 300 miles on a charge and, more importantly, it can turn in its own length thanks to clever electric torque distribution. It’s still a tank, then, but it’s a tank that aims to protect the whole planet, rather than just one country. mercedes-benz.co.uk

DRIVE LIGHTNING FAST

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

Maserati has taken the roof off the GranTurismo to create the GranCabrio, then given it a 750bhp electric powertrain. The beauty, it seems, is also a beast.

O

n the whole, Italian words are often better than English words. Yes, the Italians like to use 18 words when the Germans would use one and everyone else uses four, but they are invariably beautiful words. ‘Allora’, ‘tutti’ and ‘Natale’ are much better than ‘then’, ‘everyone’ and ‘Christmas’, and while most British schoolkids don’t know the difference between lightning and lightening, there’s no need to know the difference between ‘folgore’ and ‘allegerimento’, because they both sound insanely cool. And they’ve both been applied to the new Maserati. It’s called the GranCabrio, and it’s essentially a convertible version of the fantastic GranTurismo coupe. And this is the electric version, known as the Folgore, or ‘Lightning’. With three electric motors providing 750bhp and a 92.5kWh battery that offers up to 278 miles of range, it’s as efficient and as powerful as it is beautiful. That takes some doing, because this has to be one of the best bits of car design we’ve seen in years. Okay, it looks a bit odd with the hood up, but the bodywork is divine. So divine we’d happily sit and look at it while it charges up. Although with 270kW charging offering a top-up from 20% to 80% in 18 minutes, we aren’t sure there would be enough time. Still, if the GranTurismo is anything to go by, the GranCabrio should be pretty spectacular to drive. The fabric hood means it’s lighter than it could otherwise be, and the all-wheel-drive electric powertrain means it’s going to be quick. Oh, and it has a neck warmer to keep you feeling toasty while you drive with the roof down. Maserati GranCabrio Folgore, from £185,610, maserati.com 72

PLUGGING AWAY The Lamborghini Urus is many things. It’s fast, it’s bold and it’s staggeringly capable, but it isn’t what you might call efficient. Or rather, it wasn’t what you might call efficient. Because now there’s a new SE model, and it supplements the turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine with electric power courtesy of a motor and a battery. With a rechargeable 25.9kWh battery on board, it’s technically a plug-in hybrid, so it’ll do a little less than 40 miles on electric power alone. After that, you can either recharge or fire up the petrol engine, which works with the electric motor to produce nearly 800bhp. So at risk of misquoting M&S, this isn’t just a hybrid; it’s a 194mph, all-wheel-drive, bright orange Lamborghini hybrid. Lamborghini Urus SE, £TBC, lamborghini.com

APEX PREDATOR When you think of sports cars, the Bentley Bentayga probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Big, heavy and luxurious, it doesn’t really have the makings of a track car, but looks can be deceptive and even the standard Bentayga drives beautifully if you ask nicely, so the new Apex Edition should be quite spectacular. With lightweight 22-inch carbon wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes, it’s designed to stop and corner even more eagerly than the Bentayga we’re used to, and it can be specified with a stripe, which as we know, makes everything faster. Volvo’s newest and smallest SUV is incredibly clever, but James Fossdyke can’t help wondering whether Volvo has broken new ground or taken it a step too far

A

t risk of stating the obvious, safety is enormously important, and never more so than in transport. Cars must be crash tested, airliners must have safety cards in the seat pockets and train drivers must be wide awake. These are the non-negotiables that have become critical in our lives, yet we take them for granted. Every day, we get into cars, trains, buses and planes trusting that we’re going to be safe because all these lessons have been learned the hard way long ago. And maybe we’ve become a bit complacent. Take Volvo, which can surely be counted among the keenest students at the school of automotive safety. Here’s a brand that sold the first car with three-point seatbelts and the first car with blind-spot monitoring, which tells you if a car is lurking in that hard-to-see spot over your shoulder. In short, this is a company that takes safety seriously, and that’s reflected in its crash test results. Five-star ratings are more or less a given from Volvo. So we expect Volvos to be a beacon of occupant protection, and on paper, the new EX30 is another instalment in Volvo’s saga of safety. It’s a compact electric SUV, designed to sit beneath the XC40 (and its electric EX40 derivative) in Volvo’s range, competing with the likes of the Lexus UX and the Mercedes-Benz EQA. You can put the new electric Mini Countryman in that space, too. In short, it’s a small family car, and as such, you expect it to be safe for small families. And according to the statistics, that’s exactly what it is. A five-star crash test rating, a ridiculous suite of safety systems and the option of high-visibility Moss Yellow paintwork should all make this about as safe as

74

electric cars get. But there’s a potential issue, and it comes courtesy of the designers. You see, Volvo also wanted to make the EX30 cool, calm and unmistakably Scandinavian, stripping out all the usual banality of a family car to make room for relaxing Scandi style. Which is why there’s no ignition button, no gear lever and no instrument display. Instead, there’s a steering wheel with a few meaningless pictograms, a steering column stalk given over to gear selection and a massive central touchscreen. Even the key is just a blank lump of plastic devoid of buttons. If you want the car to open, just walk up to it. All this means the EX30’s cabin is definitely cool, clean and sustainable. With recycled materials in the dash and seats and fewer features than an OS map of the Sahara, it’s definitely minimalist. Almost to the point that it couldn’t really come from anywhere other than Scandinavia. The only real thing that punctuates the cabin is the massive central touchscreen, which controls absolutely everything. And when I say everything, I mean it. As well as all the navigation and media stuff, it’s used to change the angle of the door mirrors, and to open the boot. Lights, cruise control functions and vehicle modes can all be accessed through that screen. Which sounds really cool and high-tech, particularly when you learn the system uses Android technology to behave just like a phone. It even has Google Maps in place of satellite navigation, which is useful because the car will tell you whether you need to charge on your route, and it’ll tell you where you might find a charging point if so. It’ll even tell you whether the charger you want is available or in use. That’s all good stuff, but it means you spend an awful lot of time looking at the touchscreen, rather than looking out of the window. And that’s only exacerbated by the fact there’s no speedo, so you have to turn to that central screen if you want to know whether Officer Dibble will want a word with you. So it feels as though you have a choice. You can watch your speed religiously and rear-end anything in your way, or avoid crashing but pick up points for speeding. Obviously, that’s hyperbole, but Volvo is clearly aware of the problem, because in a bid to avoid

such issues, Volvo has fitted a camera in the steering wheel that monitors your behaviour and tells you when you have spent too long looking at the screen that Volvo itself installed. And it does so quite angrily. It also warns you if you look out of the driver’s-side window for too long, including when you’re checking a junction for oncoming traffic. What’s more, it’ll warn you if you dare to exceed the speed limit by as much as 1mph. Or, more accurately, if you exceed whatever the car thinks the speed limit might be by as much as 1mph. The tech doesn’t always know what the speed limit really is, and as any harshly treated schoolchild will tell you, it’s unbelievably annoying to be given detention when you’ve done nothing wrong (no, Mr Snowden, I haven’t forgiven you). So you turn the system off to avoid the angry bonging and 10 minutes later you get done for speeding. Again. The questions surrounding the technology are a shame, because the EX30 is a good car. Yes, the ride on 20-inch alloy wheels is a little firm and nobody

76

needs anything as fast as the twin-motor Performance model I tested. More than 420bhp in a family SUV is completely pointless, and the ability to outrun the Range Rover Sport SV we tested the other day in a 0-62mph sprint is absolutely ludicrous. Yet despite that, it still covers well over 200 miles on a charge and you can refill the battery from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour, provided you can find a suitable charging point. Charging overnight using a home charging unit should be doable, too. Admittedly, space in the back is a bit limited and the styling won’t suit everyone, but the boot is just about big enough and I quite like the design – particularly when it’s paired with a bold colour such as Moss Yellow. I like the interior design, too, even if I’m not sold on some of the recycled materials. But with the EX30, it feels as though we’ve jumped the shark in terms of technology. Other brands, including the mighty Volkswagen, are rowing back on their plans to eliminate switchgear from vehicle cabins, partly on safety grounds. If Volvo did the same, the EX30 would be one of the best electric SUVs on the market, but as it is, it’s a tricky thing to recommend to anyone who doesn’t subscribe to Stuff or T3.

Case Study

Clarity Business Travel

Destination Sport &

N

ot many of our Cheshire businesses will have a modern workspace with such a rich history as Clarity Business Travel and Destination Sport. Both are based at The Tootal Buildings in Manchester’s busy Oxford Street. Clarity, one of the UK’s leading travel management companies, has expanded and required a bigger base to house its team, as well as its specialist meetings, events and venue find division, Brighter. And with expansion plans for Destination Sport which shares the current HQ with Clarity – both part of Portman Travel Group - a decision had to be made whether to stay at their Tootal headquarters, built between 1896 and 1898 for a firm of textile manufacturers. With an empty office next door and plans to utilise the current workspace differently, a project team assembled to draw up its vision for the future. Julia Smith, IT Project Manager at Clarity, was part of the team tasked with ensuring work would go smoothly to ensure a state-of-the-art workspace. She said the offices were beginning to look outdated having been located there for nearly a decade. And with a shift to hybrid working, she said that as well as traditional meeting rooms, the new design needed bookable hot desks, as well as collaboration zones and meeting booths.

84

Kate Wolstenholme, Head of Marketing and Proposition, who was instrumental in ensuring the plans came to life, added: “It’s been a big project but one we were all excited about from the outset. We knew we wanted to create a welcoming workspace for all our teams and we think we’ve managed it. “Each part of the business – Clarity, Destination Sport and Brighter all now have their own area, as well as a communal collaboration space. “We’ve been lucky to have some great contractors to work with who have always been helpful and flexible throughout, even when problems did crop up!” Those contractors who made the vision become reality were Assembler Data Cabling, Simoda Ltd - AV installation, Surge Building services and Hunters North. The completed redesign now sees a dedicated Manchester headquarters for Destination Sport which has shared offices with sister business Clarity since its formation in 2019. Part of the reason for a redesigned office for the expanding Destination Sport team was because staff said they wanted to work from there more regularly with colleagues across different functions and brands. It looks like the most popular part of this office refit is ‘The Huddle’ – the new communal area complete with

Homes and Interiors

kitchen and dining space, as well as a pool table and dart board which has been busy with staff, as well as visitors. Destination Sport MD Paul Hemingway added: “We took the decision to create a single space for the sports division to provide an environment where they can work, socialise and collaborate. “We’re really excited to invite both new and existing partners to the new space. It is a great environment for us to discuss future growth plans with them. We hope people will really enjoy visiting and working here.” Back to the Clarity office, which now has “The Hangout”, with a kitchen and dining area. And set at the heart of both offices is a smart new collaboration area with privacy booths and large hot desk spaces. It’s purposely located here, as well as a reception area, so all teams can meet and chat with each other and with visitors. Sarah Morriss, Managing Director of Hunters Contracts North Ltd, said: “We were delighted to have won the contract to work with Clarity Business Travel and Destination Sport. The brief was straightforward - they wanted the “Perfect Workplace” for their expanding business.” A comprehensive collaboration process began whereby several factors were taken into consideration including working out how to relocate teams on site to enable refurbishment of the existing wing. New furniture had to match existing furniture, innovative floor-to-ceiling storage walls, lockers and display shelving were installed, while ensuring the phasing of deliveries, clearances and installations. There’s new tech and improved wi-fi throughout, with

individual branding for the businesses to be completed soon while sustainability has been a key consideration, hence the energy-saving LED lighting with motion sensors. Sarah added: “The results speak for themselves - a beautiful design with interesting and fun collaboration spaces, meeting rooms and a genuinely welcoming lounge area for personnel and visitors alike. “A truly brilliant team effort, it was great to work with such a like-minded team who worked very hard to make the project a real success.” Clarity CEO Pat McDonagh said: “We couldn’t be happier with the finished offices. So much hard work has gone into this project from so many people. “That hard work has been worth it to see the workspace full of happy staff who are looking forward to being based here for years to come.” The Tootal comprises Broadhurst and Lee - two interlinked buildings which boast around 250,000 sq ft of office space, with an open air courtyard at its heart. History tells us Tootal Broadhurst Lee was a Victorian textile company, renowned for its Tootal Tie, which built this property – perfectly situated at the time for receiving and sending materials via the Rochdale canal. While the industries now based in the building may have changed dramatically, the recent investment by Clarity and Destination Sport, as well as other businesses based in the Tootal, ensures the magnificent old building will continue to play a big part in the everyday life of Oxford Street.

Q&A

with

LOUISE LEVINE,

A SEMI-ABSTRACT SEASCAPE ARTIST How would you describe yourself ? Semi-abstract seascape artist, art supplies enthusiast, nature lover, chocolate and cheese fiend (not together!). Happiest when walking on an empty beach with my husband, watching the waves. Tell us a bit more about you... I started as a project manager and then moved into primary school teaching. It was about 8 years ago, when I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, that I realised I needed a change and much more flexibility in my work. My dad took me along to one of his art classes and it showed me how much I was missing being creative. Painting brought me so much joy and peace that I knew I needed to pursue this so I could paint every day. Who are your greatest influences? I absolutely love Kurt Jackson’s artwork. It’s an incredible example of semi-abstracted seascapes and landscapes and he is such an inspiration with how prolific he is. His gallery in St Just is a must visit for me for each new exhibition. What have been some of your best experiences at work? Making the move to work for myself was amazing for me. The flexibility and freedom has been life changing. I’ve always been happy to work hard but setting up my art business has allowed me to build something from the ground up, doing what I love. My husband and parents have also been a big support so it’s been lovely to have them cheerleading for me (and packing orders!). Traditional vs contemporary style? I’d say contemporary with a traditional twist! I’d take a lovely

Shaker kitchen over anything super shiny and modern. I’m also really into colour – especially teal and heather. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Creating a life I enjoy, doing what I love after my diagnosis, which has helped me cope with the daily companion of a chronic illness. It really put life into perspective and has allowed me to focus on what’s important. What would your super power be? Flying – I could get to the beach much quicker! Whether you like stormy skies, sunsets or blue sky walks along the shore, there is a seascape for every sea lover in Louise Levine’s new seascape print collection. louiselevine.co.uk

P.S. Last book you read?

Atlas: The Story of Pa Salt – the last book in the Seven Sister series. I absolutely loved this series although I’ll probably get a better night’s sleep now I’ve finished it as I was sneaking in a read in the middle of the night to find out what happened next!

Dream buy?

A house by the sea so I can walk along the beach every single day.
