WELCOME

A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR OF QUEANBEYAN-PALERANG REGIONAL COUNCIL It is hard to believe that The Q is heading into its 9th official season! The theatre is now an established presence in the local arts and entertainment scene and it is fabulous to see productions of such a high quality being presented here in Queanbeyan, year after year. Season 2017 is no different in this regard with the theatre focused on creating Entertainment that is Engaging on many different levels and celebrates the unique and Intimate theatre experience that The Q brings. Some of the highlights to look forward to in 2017 include the Council’s production of The Addams Family musical which promises to be a very entertaining musical comedy. This will be directed by The Q’s very own Program Manager and Artistic Director Stephen Pike and promises to be an excellent show. Other shows to look forward to include Stones in His Pockets, a multi-award winning comedy which has been produced internationally and is touring Australia with a stop in Queanbeyan during March 2017. Matt Hales Hypnolycious looks like it will be a modern, fun take on a traditional hypnosis show. Matt has won three national comedy awards and hypnotised people all over the world so it is exciting to have him come and perform at The Q.

Don’t miss Hypnolycious which is on for two nights only during March. The increasingly-popular Morning Melodies returns for 2017 featuring, among others, Joey Fimmano, who is one of Australia’s international multi-award winning entertainers and is capable of dazzling his audiences with his talent on the piano. Season 2017 has some fantastic shows for children and their families to look forward to. One certain to be a highlight is Horrible Harriet, a play adapted from the famous Australian children’s author Leigh Hobbs’ characters, with the story featuring the larger than life Mr Chicken. This should be a real highlight. I congratulate the team at The Q for putting together what looks to be another fantastic season of entertainment. Whatever your taste in entertainment, be it Music, Drama, Tragedy or Comedy be sure to check out season 2017 at The Q – Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre.

Tim Overall Administrator

“The arts need to stop trying to justify itself in economic terms and embrace the real public value it delivers.” Ben Eltham

All art, not just theatre, serves society. At the very least it is a diversion from everyday concerns. You only need to listen to the daily news to feel there is a lot to be gained from a visit to the theatre. Much that is best in art and culture is non-monetary and it should not be judged by the same yardstick as other financial investments. Theatre creates value, both real and perceived, by engaging with the audience on many levels including story, performance and music. There is immeasurable value in the immense amount of enjoyment that theatre gives millions of ordinary citizens every year. For 2017 we have programmed to provide you with a variety of productions that we hope you will find Entertaining as they Engage you in the Intimate environment of The Q. Within the Season you will find Drama, Comedy, a variety of Music and Musicals, Dance and even Cinema. The shows range from traditional to contemporary and will be presented by local, national and international artists. Outside of our designated Season productions will be our in-house production of The Addams Family musical which is one of the funniest musicals I have ever seen. We will also facilitate a very unique community engagement which will be created by comedian Damian Callinan and filmed by John Cherry.

This adventure will involve interviewing and working with prominent Queanbeyan citizens, making a film and will culminate in a performance of their work, giving a humorous and informative insight into the eclectic make-up of the city. We will also co-produce the world premiere of a new musical based on the rise of Julia Gillard to become Australia’s first female Prime Minister. 2017 will be one of the busiest years The Q has seen as a result of our growing popularity with hirers both community based and professional. These entrepreneurs will provide you with a feast of additional choices for your entertainment throug hout the year. You will find many of these shows listed at the back of the booklet. We are also introducing a number of new initiatives regarding ticket sales and packages. I am happy to report that the traditional Season Subscription has survived but there will be an alternative option for those who are more inclined towards technology. A new Q-Club app and card will be available for you to access discount tickets and raise credit towards a range of other gifts and special offers. Information can be found on this elsewhere in the booklet. We are also introducing a very special discount card for those aged 25 and under which we hope will make many productions more accessible to our young people.

The Addams Family Musical features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, now eighteen years old, has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family: she has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. So Lucas Beineke, the object of Wednesday’s affections, and his parents Mal and Alice are on their way to the Addam’s estate to become better acquainted with the family over dinner. Meanwhile Morticia finds herself conflicted over her ever-maturing daughters newfound feelings, while Gomez simply wishes things would remain the way they were. As they lear to relate to the Beinekes and cope with Wednesday’s romance, one thing is certain: the Addams family will never be the same. The weird and wonderful family comes to devilishly delightful life in The Addams Family Musical, a magnificently macabre new musical comedy by the creators of Jersey Boys. The musical play, complete with down home country humor, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes 27 of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love always… Patsy Cline.” Ultimately, Always... Patsy Cline concerns dreams and persistence. It’s a useful reminder that, no matter how successful we may be, we all need a friend sometimes.

Always... Patsy Cline will be performed Cabaret Style in the Bicentennial Hall next door to The Q. Starring Courtney Conway as Patsy Cline and Mandi Lodge as Louise Seger. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.

Having played all over the world including a five year run in the West End, the multi award winning comedy by Marie Jones is now touring Australia in a new production.

Stones in his Pockets is the hilarious and moving tale of a quiet Irish community turned upside down by the arrival of a Hollywood movie shoot. The film’s story of a budding romance between a rich girl and a local farmer, is played out in stark contrast with the growing friction that develops between the locals hired as extras on the film and the Hollywood big shots. Alternately riotously funny and deeply moving, the play is universally loved by all who see it. Over a dozen characters, including the extras, are played by just two actors, throughout the production. This involves lightning fast character transformation, often from one word to the next, with only minimal props and costume shifts possible to support these changes. As such it requires a high level of dexterity in physical and vocal transformation, a feat achieved by the outstanding cast. It is an artistically vivid and original production, moving and funny, theatrically inventive and entirely engaging for a broad audience.

“THIS PLAY IS NOT ONLY FUNNY, IT IS ALSO MOVING.” Michael Coveney, Financial Times.

“It is a simple and brilliant idea... the profound and perennial point of the comedy is the problem we seem to have contemplating the idea of a woman alone - in a pub, on a beach, in a restaurant. This is what Shirley learns to combat as she unravels her own sexual and social identity. The play is not only funny, it is also moving.” Michael Coveney, Financial Times

Her self-esteem battered by school, marriage and life in general, she finds herself talking to the wall while her husband is out working. “I always said I’d leave him by the time I was 40,” she says. “But by the time I was 40, there was no place to go.” She feels that her life is terribly mundane as she compares scenes in her current life with what she used to be like and feels she has stagnated. When her best friend wins an all-expenses-paid vacation to Greece for two, Shirley grasps the opportunity to head for the sun and leave her current drudgery behind, to re-find herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life. The note in the kitchen reads “Gone to Greece, back in two weeks”. Here on an unknown island, Shirley has no earth-shattering epiphanies, no religious awakening (she does have great sex) but more importantly she realizes that her dreams are not where she thought they would be waiting. And in the end she must face a second decision: should she return home to her husband or stay and indulge the new found freedom that is offered?

Born into a working class immigrant family, Julia Gillard gave little indication of leadership aspirations. She was a teenager who had few friends, she was neither cheerleader nor athlete. An inkling of her ambition arose when she became President of the Australian Union of Students and during her partnership at a law firm. The more she succeeded, the further she could see her career growing. Strong alliances allowed her to travel a pathway to the Labor Party executive. At no stage did she ever win universal support but enough majority to progress her to make Australian political history by becoming the first woman Prime Minister. To her credit she had learned that it was all about the numbers. What followed was 3 years and 3 days of personal, political and emotional turmoil. Each and every blow was examined by local, national and international media.

JULIA: The Musical is based on Julia Gillard’s own recollections as well as other key players including Kevin Rudd, the left and right factions and prominent media personalities. The audience is taken on a journey following Julia’s ascent through the Labor Party ranks – including the not-so-subtle coup of Kevin Rudd as PM — to her advent as Prime Minister of Australia. You will see the wedding feast of Canberra where Julia and Kevin say ‘I do’ to becoming a political couple, until their forced separation and ultimate political divorce. The ‘Gravy Train’ song leaves us wondering whether Julia’s sacrifices – both personal and political — were worthwhile. This emotionally charged production has received extremely positive critical acclaim and is suitable for audience everywhere. Choreography by: Simon Hoy and Timothy Podesta. PIGEONHOLE THEATRE PRESENTS

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll BY RAY LAWLER

AN QUINTESSENTIALLY AUSTRALIAN STORY

“There are jokes and lines that still take the audience by surprise, and the unique circumstances of the central characters create powerful theatre. Lawler’s ending still packs a punch.” Greg Elliott (Independent News)

IT PACKS A POWERFUL PUNCH, AND LAWLER’S WORDS HAVE A LOT OF SWING LEFT IN THEM.

“Lawler has written a play so superbly true to Australian thought and the Australian scene that theatrical conventions disappear...” The Argus

“Lawler’s writing is still delightfully relevant, peppered with vernacular Aussie-isms.” Peter Bleby (Aussie Theatre)

Ray Lawler wrote the iconic Summer of the Seventeenth Doll in the fifties, but that doesn’t mean the spirit has gone out of it. It’s hard to say just what has kept audiences gob-smacked for over half a decade – perhaps it is the stark realism, or the setting of endless, grinding summer or the sheer emotional density of the thing — but there’s no denying Summer of the Seventeenth Doll still stands as one of Australia’s most praise-worthy plays. Just about every Australian knows about “The Doll”, but not everyone has had the opportunity to see it. It is a play that has become part of Australia’s history and psyche and one that every Australian should see. Set in Melbourne in 1953 the story takes place in the lay off season when Queensland cane cutters Barney and Roo travel south again for a summer of fun and frivolity with city barmaids Olive and her friend Pearl. However, this summer is different to the summers that came before; it is full of tensions and strains to recreate lost youth as they struggle. A play about passion, expectations and disappointment, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll tells how life’s illusions — both public and private — inevitably shatter. Comedian Damian Callinan and award winning filmmaker John Cherry will capture local identities on camera to celebrate the human fabric of Queanbeyan.
