Message from Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s Mayor. Tim Overall The Q is a magnificent venue that has established itself as a major part of the entertainment and arts scene in our region. Season 2018 looks to be a brilliant season and I look forward to seeing some of the entertainment. Congratulations to The Q’s Program Manager and Artistic Director Stephen Pike and the team for putting together what looks to be a great season of entertainment. Shows to look forward to include Prize Fighter, the dramatic story of a Congolese boy orphaned by war whose boxing prowess offers a new life in Australia. David Auburn’s Proof looks to be an intelligent story considering the nature of genius and the burden of mental illness. On a lighter note, the hilarious musical Glorious tells the story of the famously terrible opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins. Don’t miss this West End and world-wide hit when it comes to Queanbeyan. For the kids, the hugely popular The Listies are returning after much success and laughter in January 2017. They are bringing their show ICKYPEDIA: A Dictionary of Disgusting New Words to the stage, which I’m sure will bring many laughs. Whatever your taste in entertainment, be it comedy, musical theatre, drama, music or children’s entertainment, there is something at The Q for you.

Message from our Program Manager Stephen Pike It’s hard to believe we are entering our 10th year while at the same time so very rewarding to see how we have grown. Every year brings a new challenge in programming a diverse range of performances. A program that will maintain your interest in The Q, entertain, challenge and ensure the vitality of our future. There are many things that impact on the choices that find their way into our season and with key words like engagement, inclusion, emotion and experience high on the agenda it is a complex process. For our 10th anniversary we have once again programmed a mixed blend of genres that we hope will not only see you celebrate what has been but also be inspired by what is yet to come. In 2018 you will find thrillers and drama relating to subjects that are real and present. You will see musicals and comedy that will make you feel joyful and uplifted and take you back in time. You, the audience, will even get to choose how one story ends in a challenging and unique theatre presentation. You will see works that are culturally diverse relating to family and individuals based on real-life experiences. Intertwined will be the opportunity for laughter to relieve the tensions of the barrage of negative news which has become common place in our world today. I will join John Shortis and Moya Simpson to bring you a celebration of the past ten years at The Q and a look into the future. There will be award-winning entertainment for children, we will continue our tradition of Morning Melodies and once again we will be presenting shows in different formats to give you the chance of getting up close and personal. 2018 will again be a very busy year at The Q as our continuing popularity with both community-based companies, and professional entrepreneurs will provide you with a vast array of additional choices for entertainment throughout the year. You will find many of these shows listed at the back of the booklet. So let the foyer bells ring and as we roll into our 10th anniversary year – Let’s Celebrate!

Griffith crafts an ingenious script that shocks and confounds. The drama will exasperate and empower you, leaving you to deliberate the eventual outcome. The Daily Mail

PATH2PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

THE MAGNOLIA TREE BY MICHAEL GRIFFITH

4

Lyn Zelen Theatre people 4.5/5

If you like a solid script and want to explore the depths of your own morality — this is the play for you. Playwright Michael Griffith has written a striking character-driven play filled with family secrets and fractured relationships that asks — What would you do? Place a parent in a nursing home or help them end their suffering? On a deeper level, it begs the question: should euthanasia be legalised in Australia? Gathered in the living room of their mother’s house Jack will try to convince his two sisters to take the life of their mother. Ultimately, the only one who can either stop him, or give him the green light will be you, because this play has two endings, and you vote for the one you feel, under the circumstances, is correct. But the decision will be difficult for this grey play mirrors our currently grey coloured world. In their mother’s old age Alzheimer’s has set in, and Jack is confident her last moments of joy and clarity fled long ago together with her soul and sanity. When Mum was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she told them that she did not want to forget who they were. She told them she’d rather be dead. Let her go? Place her in a home? Charged with the fear of judgement, regardless of which way you vote, watching to see if the hands rise around you is a fascinating experience and thrusts you into an exhilarating discomfort.

OPENS

Griffith’s insightful script permits truly outstanding and convincing performances. He includes a poignant moment of comic relief to dissipate the volatile emotions filling the room.

Queenie van de Zandt delivers torch songs with such raw emotional truth that your hair will stand on end. The Sydney Morning Herald

Herald Sun

As exquisite a biography as you’re likely to hear. Following sell-out performances at The Queensland and Melbourne Cabaret Festivals and The Hayes Theatre in Sydney, cabaret chanteuse Queenie van de Zandt, renowned for her artful storytelling and raw, emotive vocals, brings to you the songs, stories and art of the musical legend that is Joni Mitchell. Renaissance woman, painter and poet, Mitchell created a soundtrack for the Woodstock generation. In BLUE: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, Queenie, along with musical director Max Lambert and a live band, explore her love of all things Joni – affectionately reinterpreting Joni Mitchell’s melancholy music, and intimately revealing the stories behind some of her most haunting songs such as A Case of You, Both Sides Now and Little Green.

“Joni is my favourite singer/songwriter and I’ve been wanting to do a show about her and her music for some time. She gave a daughter up for adoption early in her career and her music was so influenced by this experience. Having recently given birth to a daughter myself, it felt like the perfect time to explore this mother/daughter relationship and the effect that becoming a parent has on your creativity.” – Queenie van de Zandt.

THANK Q FOR THE MEMORIES — Let’s Celebrate

In March 2008, the doors opened on The Q, a Council initiative to create a cultural centre in the heart of Queanbeyan. To mark the Tenth Anniversary, Bungendore’s own Shortis and Simpson are working with Actors and Musicians, with links to the centre, to create a performance that celebrates the history and range of performances they have participated in over its first ten years. Shortis and Simpson will be joined by the likes of Dave Evans, Jenna Roberts, Jordan Best, Christine Forbes, Gordon Nicholson, Peter J Casey, The Queanbeyan Players, Free Rain, The Worldly Goods Choir, and a hot band made up of Dave O’Neil, Jonathan Jones and Ian Blake. The show will also feature excerpts from some of the many shows Shortis & Simpson have performed at The Q. Thank Q For the Memories will have its own theme song written in a community song-writing workshop to be held at the theatre. This unique variety show celebrates a decade of Performing Arts in the vibrant cultural heart of Queanbeyan. Both Patrons and Performers alike agree that The Q is a quality venue with an intimate atmosphere unique to our region. A fantastic place to entertain and be entertained.

Seriously the best arts venue in the region. Wherever you get seated, you’ll have a great seat. George

{Proof } By David Auburn

12

John Pollak - Sydney Arts Guide

The proof is really in the ‘Proof’ David Auburn‘s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play Proof centre’s around a mathematician, his two daughters, a former student and a mathematical ‘proof’ discovered after the mathematicians death. Rather than delve deeply into sexual inequality in academia or our fears and ignorance around mental disabilities and depression, the play touches each lightly but remains firmly driven by themes of familial and the relationship of trust. Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father. When he dies she is left alone to pick up the pieces of her life without him.

}“

Caught between a new-found connection with Hal, one of her father’s former students who hopes to find some hint of genius in the 103 notebooks of incoherent scribblings Catherine’s father left behind, and the reappearance of her older sister Claire, Catherine’s world begins to close in as she is forced to question how much she can actually trust those closest to her.

OPENS

The dialogue is compelling and the ending moving and thought provoking.

A delightful and blissfully funny play that generates a rare glow of warmth and generous laughter. Daily Telegraph

A classic excellent night’s entertainment. Recommended. Diana Simmonds (Stagenoise)

Glorious! By Peter Quilter

14

The Independent

A classic excellent night’s entertainment! American socialite, Florence Foster Jenkins, was both the worst and best known soprano in New York City in the early 1940s. Glorious is the play that inspired the acclaimed movie released last year — Florence Foster Jenkins — starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. In the 1940s the singer everyone wanted to see perform live in New York was the enthusiastic soprano Florence Foster Jenkins - ‘ the first lady of the sliding scale’. Surrounding herself with devoted friends, almost as eccentric as she, this deliciously happy and delusional woman paid scant attention to her critics and would screech and warble to her audiences, most falling about with laughter. This is the voice of which the great Enrico Caruso — a fan — once said he had never before heard it’s like. There is something at once mesmerising and sublime about listening to a pair of vocal cords in search of a note, finding it, losing it again and continuing on a meandering path to approximation. And when the “singing” is carried out with the supreme and serene confidence it is simply breathtaking. This heart-warming comedy moves from Florence’s charity recitals and lavish balls, through to her very odd recording sessions and her ultimate performance triumph at New York’s Carnegie Hall, incorporating her wonderfully colourful relationships along the way. The show premiered in London’s West End in November 2005 and received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination as Best New Comedy and has since been seen by two million plus people across six continents.

OPENS

A lunatically funny play that will keep you very happy... A glittering comedy with a heart.

“

This is a real Australian family in a real Australian setting, a gentle psychological thriller that no Australian should miss.

16

Adelaide Theatre Guide

Adelaide Theatre Guide

It was the perfect family home, until the family came back! In Hotel Sorrento Hannie Rayson reaches into the heart of family relationships to reveal, gradually, the multiplicity of factors that both bring family members together — and drive them apart. She also comments about ‘national’ stereotyping … and misogyny! So, though some may consider the play to be a little dated, its underlying themes remain tellingly relevant. A highly commercial and relatable comedy/drama and familial story for a mainstream audience. This award winning play, tells the story of three sisters who grew up together in the seaside town Sorrento. Hilary lives in the family home in Sorrento with her father and 16 year-old son. Pippa, a business woman, is visiting from New York and Meg, a successful writer, returns from England. When the three sisters are reunited after 10 years apart, they again feel the constraints of family life. The play is about family in a literal and metaphorical sense and the importance of blood ties and collective memory, true or false. Hotel Sorrento was first performed in 1990 and won an AWGIE, NSW Premier’s Literary Award and a Green Room Award. Since then the play has had over 50 productions throughout Australia and overseas.

…a heart-warming tale of one family’s struggle with loyalty and self expression… Courier Mail

A real blast...from the past! Downtown flips through the years like a musical magazine and takes you back to the music, the fashion and the freedom of the 60’s. This smashing revue tracks five groovy gals as they come of age during those liberating days that made England swing. It uses the infectious and soulful pop anthems and ballads that made household names of stars like Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield and Lulu. With a shimmy and shake, the songs are tied together by hilarious sound bites from the period. Featuring chart-topping hits such as “To Sir With Love”, “Downtown”, “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, “Son of A Preacher Man” and “Goldfinger”, its irresistible blend of hip-swivelling hits, eye-popping fashions and psychedelic dances, this fun-filled musical will make you want to head back to the swinging 60’s. It’s bright, it’s snappy, it has plenty of laugh-out-loud humour — plus an underlying current of pathos – and it invites key moments of audience participation, particularly in a high octane finale. Downtown — The Mod Musical is lovably addictive and recommended to all ages. Director: Stephen Pike. Choreographer: Jacquelyn Richards. JURASSICA “ by Dan Giovannoni

I am not fully Italian or fully Australian and despite ignoring my family heritage for a long time, I don’t think I can really understand my family unless I understand what they went through, how they were raised. Dan Giovannoni

Starring: Joe Petruzzi, Olga Makeeva Caroline Lee 20

Anne-Marie Peard SMH

A story of families, of migration, of growing old, and of dinosaurs (but not the prehistoric kind). Jurassica is a story of family, migration, language and growing old. It is a heart-warming tale, told with humour and pathos and spoken in both English and Italian. It’s also about dinosaurs - but not necessarily those from pre-historic times. Performed in Italian as well as English, Giovannoni’s exquisite play provides a very contemporary perspective on the universal themes of displacement, home, and how our past shapes our future. Ralph and Sara migrated from Tuscany in the 1950s to their concrete-frontyard house in suburban Moorabbin. Their son, Ichlis, never really forgave them for his misunderstood name and grandson Luca is struggling to talk with his father or grandfather. Until one night Ralph is rushed to hospital and, through an unlikely connection with Kaja, an interpreter, Luca learns to reconnect. Developed during his time as Resident Writer at Red Stitch, with Dramaturge Gary Abrahams, Dan Giovannoni’s magical new play, Jurassica, weaves the past and present together, exploring what it is to migrate, to be displaced and to spend the rest of your life searching for home. Most of all, this is a play about the importance of family and about mending fences before you grow too old.

OPENS

Honest and heartfelt performances that ensure the fragments of memory gently question and shape the present.

The Australian

Adrenaline-pumping, full-contact theatre at its best. Theatre, Brecht said, should be as exciting as a boxing match. It should exist under harsh lights, its mechanisms naked, its audiences cheering and applauding every punch. And it should matter. Get ringside for a rare theatrical combo: engrossing storytelling paired with the visceral thrill of live boxing. Fleeing the Congo as a child, playwright Future D. Fidel lived in a Tanzanian refugee camp for eight years before being granted refugee status in Australia. Prize Fighter is inspired by his own story and those of the people he has known. Isa is a young Congolese boxer blazing an impressive career between the ropes. Gearing up for the national title fight, he soon discovers it’s not just his opponents he has to outdo, but the demons from his tortuous past as a boy soldier. Prize Fighter is skilfully realised theatre that generates considerable emotional potency. What makes it especially powerful is the complexity and delicacy that runs through Isa’s story. Writer: Future D Fidel. Director: Todd MacDonald. Dramaturg: Chris Kohn. Designer: Bill Haycock. Lighting Designer: David Walters. Composer & Sound: Felix Cross. Sound Design Remix: Busty Beatz. Video Designer: Optikal Bloc. Movement & Fight Director: Nigel Poulton. Image: Dylan Evans.

In the 65 thrilling minutes that make up Prize Fighter, Future D. Fidel manages to say more about our world and internal lives than many playwrights do in a lifetime.

It’s the hilarious celebration of women and “the change”. The original Australian Menopause The Musical debuted in Melbourne in 2005 for a six week season which was extended to six months. The show then went on to tour other capital cities for five years and was seen by 980,000 theatre goers across the country. Menopause The Musical follows the story of four women who meet at a department store lingerie sale and discover they have plenty in common, including mood swings, night sweats, hot flushes, lacklustre sex drive and much more! A sisterhood is created between these diverse women as they realise that Menopause is no longer “the silent passage”, but a stage in every woman’s life, which is perfectly normal! Men love it too! This hilarious musical parody staged to classic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The clever changes in words will leave you smiling and even dancing in the aisles!

Every woman over 40 should see this show! It will have you laughing and clapping from beginning to end and there is an uplifting, positive theme about being a woman that just puts a gold star on this production. I had a hot flush during the show but just fanned myself through it while laughing. Excellent Show! Jo F

A knowledgeable and passionate historian in everything ragtime. Adam Swanson is the foremost young ragtime enthusiast in the United States. He has been performing since he was ten years old and graduated with a bachelor’s in classical piano and a master’s degree in musicology at the Peabody Conservatory in 2015. In May of 2008, Swanson became the youngest-ever pianist to win the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest. Between 2008 and 2015, he became the only fourtime winner of that championship. Adam made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall when he was nineteen. The name Scott Joplin will be known to many people; others may know of James Scott or Joseph Lamb. However, these three, considered to be the finest classic ragtime composers, were joined by over 1,000 others, some of whom only ever had one ragtime composition published. Much of this music languishes unplayed, until now. Adam Swanson is one of the cadre of pianists who have fossicked to find these gems, and he will play some of the standards and several of the lesser-known tunes, many of which may never have been previously played in Australia. Adam has performed at The Kennedy Center and in Switzerland and Hungary.

Adam Swanson has accomplished more feats in his young musical career than many artists dream of achieving in a lifetimes work.

ANGRY MEN

Everyman Theatre presents

Life is in their hands — death is on their minds. Everyman Theatre, producer of critically acclaimed productions of ‘The History Boys’ and ‘Company’ are back at The Q with one of the 20th Century’s most famous thrillers. A young man’s life hangs in the balance as 12 strangers deliberate on his ultimate fate. At first glance the underprivileged boy appears guilty of murdering his father in cold blood. The evidence seems to suggest so, but questions of prejudice, family, and class warfare threaten to tear their fragile deliberations apart. 11 men are ready to convict and send him to the electric chair. Only one man has doubts. With it’s unique presentation in the round, the audience will be in the jury room, experiencing every moment of the story up until the nail-biting finish. 12 Angry Men is a scintillating blend of raw emotion and high stakes where individual life stories are gradually revealed. Written over 50 years ago this play is still relevant now. It asks questions about judging others instinctively and do we, in the age of Brexit and Trump, still wrestle with the same issues of race and identity that humanity did in the 1950’s? Will we ever move past these questions? Set Design — Martin Searles. Sound Design & Composition — Tim Hansen Lighting Design — Eclipse Lighting and Sound. By special arrangement with Origin Theatrical, exclusive agents for Samuel French Inc. Cast — Geoffrey Borny, Robert deFries, Duncan Driver, Lucas Frank Cole Hilder, Will Huang, Isaac Reilly, Martin Searles, Michael Sparks Tony Turner, Nick Valois and Christopher Zuber. 12 Angry Men will be performed in the round at the Bicentennial Hall next door to The Q.

REFUND POLICY

Over the next 18 months you will notice quite a lot of construction work around The Q. The end result of this will be a stunning revitalisation of this area but like a lot of good things we may have to endure a little inconvenience to get there. The work is going to result in the loss of many of the current car-parking spaces close to the venue however a temporary carpark will be provided at the eastern end of the current spaces once the buildings on Crawford Street have been demolished. Carparks can also be found on the opposite side of Crawford Street, at the Cooma Street end of the Showground, behind the Visitors Centre opposite the police station, behind the Tourist Hotel (entry off Lowe Street) and along many city streets. There will eventually be a new underground carpark very close to the venue. Until this work commences The Q can be accessed, as has been the case, from both Rutledge and Lowe Streets. Parking is free with spaces for 160 cars. On weekdays parking is limited and a three hour time limit applies.

Tickets are non-refundable unless a performance is cancelled and in accordance with The Entertainment Industry Code of Fair Practice.

CHECK YOUR TICKETS When you receive your tickets please check them carefully to ensure the performance time and date are correct.

AUDIENCE ADVICE Please note that from time to time our productions may contain coarse language, adult references, smoke effects, strobe lighting or loud music. Where informed we will endeavour to provide notice of this in the theatre foyer prior to the performance. The Q is a smoking free venue.
