Foreword

The girls in the Prep School never cease to amaze me with their enthusiasm, hard work and positive approach to school life. They throw themselves fully into

every activity whether it be competitive sports, school plays, historical role play, investigating wildlife, music festivals, art workshops, collecting for a charity or preparing a delicious lunch for the staff in a Food lesson. It would be exhausting to spend a day in the shoes of some of our girls as they move from club to club, lesson to lesson, always with a smile on their face and an eagerness to be involved. Their interests and talents are limitless and to support this we aim to enable every girl to enter into as broad a range of activities as possible. You will see in the following pages that this aim has most certainly been

fulfilled this year through numerous activities and special events ranging from tea tasting sessions to creating interactive museums in the classroom all of which have run alongside day to day classroom learning. Inevitably publications such as this will focus on the more exciting parts of the curriculum especially our many and varied extra-curricular and enrichment events, activities and trips. These are all designed to support and enhance our curriculum, building the girls’ love of learning and general emotional health and well-being. I must admit though it can sometimes seem like all we ever do is have fun! Please rest assured that we never forget the strong core of academic rigour that underpins this, and the success of our strategy is yet again shown this year by the school’s outstanding GCSE and A Level results. We feel very proud of our school community – girls, staff, parents and Governors – and I hope that you will enjoy this taste of the exciting adventures the Prep School has embarked upon this year exploring worlds filled with fascinating facts and intriguing possibilities.

Nursery

We’re going on a bear hunt‌ Wellies & coats were the order of the day as we went on an exciting autumn adventure. Nursery went exploring the wet & wild wood at Idless to hunt down autumn leaves for their nature collages & maybe even find a Gruffalo! Autumn Woods I like the woods In autumn When dry leaves hide the ground, When the trees are bare And the wind sweeps by With a lonesome rushing sound. I can rustle the leaves In autumn And I can make a bed In the thick dry leaves That have fallen From the bare trees Overhead. by James S. Tippett

Nursery Sleigh bells ring Nursery had an exciting surprise when they heard Father Christmas’ sleigh pulling up at Truro High. With a big sack of presents and a beautiful grotto, it’s a good thing everyone had been very good girls and boys this year! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring Is the carol that you sing Right within your heart It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Meredith Willson

Dressing the Part for Children in Need Prep got all dressed up with only one place to go; Nursery’s BBC Children in Need Bake Sale for some delicious treats with Pudsey Bear.

Can we fix it? Yes we can Nursery started the Michaelmas term with some hands-on work experience. Everyone got out their trowels and put on their hard hats as they learnt all about construction with Ben the Builder. There were some very well-made walls by the end of the session and everyone seemed to take to their new profession like bricks to mortar.

A trip to the shops Nursery were very grown up this year & went shopping in Truro Sainsbury’s to get treats for their Christmas party. Feeling festive is always in the preparation. • Breadsticks • Party rings • Carrot and cucumber sticks • Crisps • Cherry tomatoes • Chocolate biscuits • Cocktail sausages • Mince pies

Reception

Bonfire Night “Remember, remember the fifth of November… Nursery & Reception loved celebrating Bonfire Night in the Nursery garden with tasty hot dogs & glittering sparklers as the sun went down. We made sure that we wore gloves to keep our hands safe. “We lit the sparkler and lots of sparkles came out. It was so fantastic!” - Ornela

Outdoor Learning “And the secret garden bloomed and bloomed and every morning revealed new miracles.” Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden This year we have been very busy getting greenfingered and improving our environment around the school grounds. We planted seeds and bulbs to brighten up our garden, experienced the miraculous metamorphosis of butterflies emerging from their cocoons and made springtime bird feeders to hang in the trees. The birds seemed to really enjoy them because soon all the seeds had gone! “I planted sunflower seeds and I couldn’t wait for them to grow and be beautiful!” - Lana

Reception A visit from the fire-engine In the Michaelmas Term we were lucky enough to have a visit from our local Truro Fire and Rescue Service crew. They told us all about the dangers of fire and how to keep ourselves safe including practising a stop, drop and roll . We listened very carefully but our favourite part was when we actually got to sit in the engine and use the hose. “I loved going in the fire engine and sitting in the seat. I tried the hose and I squirted the bushes with water!” – Lilly

Mini-Beasts Did you know? There are over 25,000 different species of mini beast in Britain alone. We learnt so much about mini beasts during the summer term. We even created our very own critters to add to the collection. One of our favourite activities was when we went out on the school field to dance and make mini-beast music. We also loved listening to ‘The Flight of the Bumble Bee’ but secretly thought our compositions were better! “I liked playing the bells; it was really fun and I liked being with my friends We played fast music to imagine being butterflies and slow music to move like snails.” – Daisy

Chinese New Year

Thursday, February 19 - Chinese New Year 2015

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the main Chinese festival of the year. Did you know? Children receive red envelopes full of money instead of wrapped gifts that other nationalities give at Christmas. After learning all about Chinese New Year, we decided to celebrate it. We painted Chinese letters to decorate the classroom and made fans before giving chopsticks a try. “We tried Chinese New Year food; I liked the noodles best” - Isabelle

Enriching Learning Earlier in the year Miss Mills sent us a questionnaire to find out what things we are particularly interested in or might want to do when we are older. She’s using this to set up some bespoke enrichment activities.

I’ve been allowed to join the Senior textiles club for a term because I’m really interested in that, and Orlagh is interested in building design so she has been to visit an architect. Other people have been to meet a wedding dress designer and been to an art workshop. Over the course of a whole year everyone from Prep Three upwards should get a chance to do something. Thank you for organising this Miss Mills. Lily Peake, Prep 6

a

Bespoke Inspiration Clara, Mary, Miss Mills, Grace, Mrs D and I went to see a wedding dress designer who showed us some fashion books full of pages of ladies wearing lovely dresses. Then we looked at her website and saw loads of veils and they were all gorgeous. Next she showed us some of the dresses she was working on. After that we got to try on some veils and they were very very pretty. Finally she kindly gave us some samples of materials for us to take back to school. India Stringer, Prep 4 Anna d’Souza designs and makes bespoke bridal accessories and garments from her studio in Truro.

Enriching Learning

Researching Creativity We went to the Lander Art Gallery with Miss Mills. Everyone sketched the pieces which inspired them. It was really fun because everyone could draw anything they liked. There were some amazing paintings there. Heather Todd, Prep 3 Cornwall has been a centre for art since John Opie in the eighteenth century. The arrival of the railway brought countless artists down to explore celebrated Cornish beauty spots including Polperro, Newquay, Tintagel and much much more.

Green Fingers Prep Gardening Club have had an excellent year weeding, replanting and tidying the bug hotel. They were lucky enough to have the chance to explore Mr Miller Sr.’s blooming vegetable garden & greenhouse to get some ideas for their patch. There was even an opportunity to meet Mrs Miller’s sheep & Hugo the dog.

Painting outside the lines Our Prep artists spent a creative afternoon at Truro Arts Company exploring the messy side of drawing the women who inspire them. Their inventive portraits weren’t the only things that got covered in paint!

Prep 1 Flotsam Weaving Prep 1 were inspired by Cornwall based artist Jo Atherton’s weaving with flotsam to create beautiful fabric tapestries which even included their own silk prints based on their sketches from The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Jo noticed their naturally creative work on Twitter and left the girls a lovely message.

Clipboards ready Prep 1 donned high visibility jackets & headed to the school front to conduct a Truro traffic survey to learn about human geography.

Did you know? There are around 35,760,901 vehicles currently on UK roads, which is roughly one car for every two people.

Prep 1 Time Travels Prep 1 went on a time travelling trip to the Royal Cornwall Museum to learn more about what people used to do when they went on holiday. Woollen swimsuits were a big surprise! Did you know? Not many people could swim in the Victorian period – they could only paddle. Rich people paid to get changed in wooden huts called bathing machines which were then taken into the sea by a horse. A lot of people didn’t own their own costumes and had to hire them.

Learning About Worms Prep 1 got in touch with nature this autumn and explored the soil in outdoor learning to find out more about their wiggly friends in the wormery. Did you know? Worms are tough little creatures. If you accidentally cut an earthworm in half while gardening, only half will die. The piece with the saddle (the fatter, pink part) will survive.

“Worms are quite magical, aren’t they?” – Emily

Cultural Celebrations: Kodomo no Hi Celebrations are a big part of life in Prep 2. The girls expanded their cultural (& culinary) horizons in the summer term by learning about Kodomo no Hi - Children’s Day in Japan. They

made traditional Koinobori carp streamers & even tried their own handmade sushi.

“For the Japanese festival Kodomo no Hi, we tried sushi and made fish banners to celebrate” – Chloe

A festive helping hand Father Christmas gave Prep 2 a challenge this year! He was so

busy and the elves were a little snowed under with all their work that they asked for the girls’ help. Father Christmas left all the presents they needed to wrap and as a treat gave some lovely Christmas treats such as mince pies and stollen. He even gave them outfits to wear!

In the afternoon he asked them to find out the real meaning of Christmas and they found it in the Cathedral lying, in a manger where they lit their own Christmas candles. “We held our own Elf day to help Father Christmas with all his work!” – Plum

Prep 2 presents ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Prep 2 finished their Outdoor Learning topic with a fabulous, open-air production of ‘The Princess and the Frog’ by the school pond. They designed and created their own play where they narrated, acted and played musical instruments. Although a little windy, the very professional team put on two wonderful performances! “I do not want your pearls, your precious stones, and your clothes, but if you’ll accept me as a companion and let me sit next to you and eat from your plate and sleep in your bed, and if you’ll love and cherish me, then I’ll bring your ball back to you.” – Frog

Prep 2 Down on the farm During Michaelmas term, Prep 2 went to Trevaskis Farm to find out about how their food is grown and harvested. They were able to see a selection of plants and animals, and were even able to sample some delicious strawberries! In the afternoon they were sent on a treasure hunt to see what they could spot around the farm and at the end they found the prize of some lettuce seeds which they could grow themselves. “We visited Trevaksis Farm to find out where our food comes from. I really enjoyed feeding the goats the apples we had picked” – Daisy L “Miss Mills really liked the pigs, she kept on taking us back to them!” – Daisy J “I loved tasting the food, it was so fresh” – Ivy

Fire! Fire! Prep 2 have been focusing on the Great Fire of London in history this year, which we couldn’t wait to tell everyone about. The girls’ assembly on Pudding Lane

in 1666 set both imaginations and a beautifully made model of London alight.

“We did a fire dance for our Great Fire of London project imagining that we were the flames” – Plum Did you know? When Samuel Pepys thought his own house was in danger, he dug a hole and buried a cheese! It was an expensive Parmesan cheese from Italy. He wanted to keep it safe.

I-spy: The Big Bird Watch Prep 2 took part in the RSPB’s Big Bird Watch. They went to Malpas pond where they spotted a selection of birds, including an enormous American Black Duck. “In our outdoor learning lesson we went bird spotting for the Royal National Bird Watch. I couldn’t believe how many different types we found” – Chloe Nationally over 90,000 pupils and teachers braved the cold and took part in counting the birds for an hour during the first halfterm of 2015.

Tasting Tea Prep 2 explored teas from around the world in the summer term. The girls were lucky enough to visit Create and Paint at Cornwall Gold to create their own mugs, inspired by the artist Laura Hughes, to test various teas in. The girls had a wonderful afternoon spent intently creating their beautiful flowery designs before leaving them to be glazed overnight. Laura noticed them on Twitter and left the girls a lovely message. They then undertook their own ‘blind’ tea tasting trial to see which they preferred. Daisy even brought in some flowering tea for everyone to try.

Ladies’ Day

“Ladies’ Day is the sort of event that makes Prep School so special. It was a fun-filled afternoon with everybody joining in with the spirit of competition and camaraderie: a real celebration of the community we have at Truro High” Mrs Miller

Ladies’ Day

Hold on to your hats “I really enjoyed the parade, it was so much fun to show off what we’d made. All the other hats was amazing, I can’t believe that I won. Dr Moodie liked mine so much he even tried it on.” Best hat in show winner, Prep 2 Ivy Wright

The Willow Field was a riot of colour, creativity and competition as we experienced the thrill of a day at the races at our very own Ladies’ Day.

Drawing credit: Elizabeth Grande

To mark the end of this year’s Royal Ascot, we invited everyone to put on their finest clothes and don their hats for this eagerly anticipated, stylish event. The girls designed and created their own hats in class to complete their glamorous ensembles in preparation for the special occasion. With designs ranging from the chic delicacy of doilies used as lace trimming to sumptuous pompom adorned concoctions, the girls employed great creative skill and imagination to turn paper plates into one of a kind pieces. With confetti splashing water jumps, a ‘decorate your hat’ relay and even a champagne waiter challenge the girls really got into the racing spirit of Royal Ascot as well as exploring their inner fashionistas (even Dr Moodie donned a chapeau!).

Prep 3 Rumble in the jungle Prep 3 learnt about the rainforest this year. We did lots of art work involving the kinds of animals who live there to create a rainforest in our classroom. We were very proud of our beautiful drawings. There was a rumble in the jungle (& the Prep Hall) as we told everyone all about life in the rainforest. We even pretended to be orang-utans. Ella Huddy Did you know? Rainforests cover only 6 % of the Earth’s surface yet they contain MORE THAN HALF of the world’s plant and animal species!

Many of the things we have in our homes comes from the rainforest. These include: • medicine • chocolate - Chocolate is made from cocoa. Cocoa pods grow on trees in rainforests. • sugar • spices - includes ginger, allspice, pepper, cinnamon, coconut, vanilla, turmeric and paprika. • rubber • pineapples • bamboo

Investigating Rituals Did you know? A Bishop’s chair is called a Cathedra & without it a cathedral would just be a church. Prep 3 spent an enlightening morning learning about Christian rites, rituals & robes in Truro Cathedral. They even got to dress the part.

Highlights issue 2014 - 2015

Prep 3 Puppet pals In Art, we made our own Sock Puppet characters! Then in English we put together a play all about them. It was so much fun to perform our stories to Reception. It was amazing! How to make your own Sock Puppet 1. Find a grown-up to help 2. Find an old, clean sock 3. Stuff the toe of the sock with cotton wool, then twist and tie with an elastic band. Now your puppet has a head! 4. Put you hand inside the sock and mark where your thumb and little finger would poke out. Take the sock off your hand and carefully cut two holes where you have marked. These will be your arm holes! 5. Using PVA glue (or, with the help of a grown-up, a glue gun) stick some googly eyes onto your puppet’s head. 6. Now comes the fun part. Decorate your puppet character however you like. They could have long red hair made out of wool, huge eyebrows or even a hat! 7. When the glue has dried you can try your puppet on for size. Put your fingers through the armholes and you can start telling some amazing adventures about what your brand-new puppet friend has been up to.

Down the mines Prep 3 travelled back in Cornish History when we visited Geevor Tin Mine. We went underground into the

actual Tin Mines that the men and women used to work in. It was cold and very dark. We even tried crushing rocks to see what it was like to be a miner and feel how hard it was. Then we sieved for gems. What a tiring but fantastic day. Orla Hilliard Did you know? In 1838 children as young as 7 worked in Cornish mines making up 20% of the workforce.

A Visit from the Dentist Mr O’Halloran, a dentist, came to teach Prep 3 how to look after their teeth. He gave Rosie a tablet which made her teeth go purple to show where she needed to

clean them.

Eva Bradley 1. Toddlers have 20 primary or baby teeth. Adults have 32 permanent (including 4 wisdom) teeth. Cats have 30 teeth and dogs have 42. 2. An elephant’s tooth can weigh more than six pounds! 3. Your mouth produces an average of 1 to 2 quarts of saliva (spit) each day, or over 25,000 quarts in a lifetime - enough to fill two swimming pools!

4. Teeth are as unique as fingerprints! Even identical twins have different dental patterns. 5. Before the invention of toothpaste, about a hundred years ago, people used ground-up chalk or charcoal, lemon juice, ashes (fire leftovers), and tobacco and honey mixed together.

Out & About

Winter in Eden “Every time I tried to stand up on the ice, I slipped over! I was cross but it was funny! - Lana

Highlights issue 2014 - 2015

We had a fantastic festive time when we went to the Eden Project with the Nursery children who had great fun playing on the ice rink with a variety of sledges, bikes and balls. Sadly there was no sign of Father Christmas but we did see lots of his reindeer. What a winter wonderland!

Out & About City of Lights Truro City of Lights began far in advance of the parade itself. First of all, we created our lanterns in the shape of chickens. This meant soaking pieces of willow before taping them into shape. After lunch we used PVA glue and especially thick paper to cover the chickens before attaching a candle inside the frame work.

We were so excited when it came to the actual day of the parade. There were so many other groups and schools starting from our campus, it was an amazing sight to see. Everyone was given a flapjack to enjoy en route. We wrapped up warm and couldn’t wait to light our lanterns and start the route. Evie got to hold the sign that said Truro High Prep to let everyone know who we were as we paraded through Truro. We saw some amazing lanterns as we paraded through the street. By the end of the route, we all went home tired but very happy. Amy Frankland, Prep 5 This year the theme was heroes and heroines. Our lamps were in the shape of chickens to go with a giant model of a land girl. It was wonderful walking through town with all of the children from other schools. Izzie Leigh, Prep 6

Reception & Prep 1 explored the fortifications at Pendennis Castle, Falmouth to find out more about our fascinating local naval & military history. Did you know? Whilst Pendennis Castle is currently open to the public as an English Heritage site, in times of war the military can take it over to protect the country. Pendennis Castle is one of the finest surviving examples of an English coastal fortress. Together with the St Mawes Castle, Pendennis has guarded boats around Carrick Roads and Falmouth Harbour for over 400 years. The castle was built by Henry VIII as a gun-fort in the mid-16th century to protect the country from Spanish invasion. Defences were added in the 1590s and were then periodically updated, notably during the Napoleonic Wars, in the years 1880–1910 and during the Second World War when the guns again saw action.

Presenting . . .

Truro High School presents… This year the main school production was ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. It was a fantastic thing to be a part of as it included girls from all across the school.

Highlights issue 2014 - 2015

Presenting . . . We were very nervous at auditions because we knew that if we did well we might be able to get some very big parts. The costumes and make-up were absolutely incredible particularly for those girls who had male roles. Our favourite memory was when Rose, Prep 5, turned round and saw that Hollie, Prep 5, had the most facial hair in the entire production. The Senior School and Sixth Form helped out backstage as well as on set so everyone could join in in any way they liked. We would like to say a big thank you to our director, Mr Tutin, for organising productions which everyone always loves. Rose Hallam and Hollie Jennings, Prep 5

Prep 4 Home Sweet Home In Science we have been learning about different habitats. It was really fun because we all went to the pond and

Around the World In Geography we learnt about Europe. Every week we would learn about different countries. My favourite

country to learn about was France because I liked speaking in French and finding the major towns on the map. I also like trying French food. Emma Day

pond dipped. Everyone found newts and little tadpoles there (no one fell in luckily!) We also made a rock pool to go on our wall. Everyone made a creature, I made a crab.

Birds live in trees, Rabbits live in holes, Fish live in water, Hedgehogs live in hedges. And humans lives in houses, flats, bungalows, caravans and tents. Arabella Smithson

Hands-on History at Royal Cornwall Museum In the autumn term, we walked down to the museum full of excitement and joy for we were about to have the best day ever. We looked at exciting Roman artefacts, it was like stepping back in time (wow!). Next we had to act like archaeologists trying to guess what the artefacts were and which room in a Roman Villa they would belong in. After that, Tabitha got the exciting job of getting a chance to try on a Roman toga. Then we got to make our own oil lamps out of clay. It was fun poking the holes in and shaping the spout. Prep 4 The Theatre of Myth Scene 1 Traveller 1:

My tale is full of darkness and despair. I come from Denmark where there is a might hall ruled by the King of the Danes. Beyond this hall are whispering marshes and in them lives an evil monster who drips with filth and has an evil heart.

Beowulf:

Did you say an evil monster? What is his name?

Traveller 1:

He was called Grendel.

Beowulf:

(stands up and shouts) I will go and slaughter that beast.

Warriors (all): Be careful, he is a big and strong monster. Beowulf:

I will use my father’s sword to kill Grendel and rid Denmark of this monster.

Tabitha Williams

‘It’s a slip of a thing that will spark your imagination’ What is poetry? Prep 4 have thought about this question and whilst searching for answers discovered what other people think about this. We learnt about lots

of different types of poems including haikus, two line rhymes and much much more.

We performed a play about poetry to show everyone in the Prep School what we had learnt. Po and Etry helped their friend Clare to learn about poetry. At first she didn’t know anything about rhyme but as we all helped her to understand she began to be able to rhyme everything. We finished with a dance we had choreographed to ‘Golden Slumber’ by the Beatles which is based on ‘Cradle Song’, a lullaby by the dramatist Thomas Dekker. Eloise Mack My little puppy Really cute and nice Likes the colour red. Snail in the grass He’s called Sammy the Snail Hiding in his shell.

Viking Voyages Vikings were very good sailors, travellers, traders and explorers so we made model longboats. This is how you make them. 1. Take a sheet of paper. 2. Cut out a boat shape. 3. Paint your boat. 4. Let the boat dry. 5. Cut out your shields to hang on the boat. 6. Decorate your shields and colour them in. 7. Cut out a mast. 8. Put a pattern on it and colour the mast in. 9. Attach your mast to a stick. 10. Stick this on to your boat. 11. Attach the shields to the side of your boat.

And there you have a beautiful Viking Longboat! Rachel Wilson

Niamh O’Neill

Buried Treasure In History, we learnt how archaeologists learn about the past through uncovering evidence that tells us how people used to live. We learnt how

we know lots about the Anglo-Saxons through the discovery of a monk’s burial at Sutton Hoo. We made our own time capsules.

You fill up a box with things that are important in your life and bury it deep in the ground then some time later someone will come and dig it up. That’s how we learn about the past. So for homework we had to make a time capsule. Arabella Smithson

A Trip To Remember

Barton Hall Going to Barton Hall was very exciting. We did so many different activities which were great fun. My favourite activity was canoeing because it involved taking part in the 5 star challenge. It was brilliant even though I did fall in the lake. We also tried out the trapeze which was hilarious if a little bit scary. Mrs Miller took some amazing photos of our reactions. We also did a sensory trail, where we had to wear goggles which meant we couldn’t see. Orlagh was particularly funny, deciding the best way to do the course was to crawl all over the place. Our instructor said it had made his day as it was a really clever way to get around whilst not being able to see. Tillunah-Belle Waters and Jennifer Wilson, Prep 5

We did lots of exciting activities like vertical challenge, canoeing, abseiling, trapeze and many more. We sometimes had to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and it was a really good feeling to achieve something that you thought you couldn’t. Prep 5 and 6 would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers that came, especially Mrs Griffin because she no longer works at the school so took up her own time to come. Lily Stone, Prep 6

A Trip To Remember Hill House Residential Trip I feel really excited about spending time with my friends and teachers outside of school because we don’t really get to go on school camps that much. I feel really nervous about having to pack my bag because I am getting ready to say goodbye to Mummy, Daddy and Ava. I feel excited about the coach journey because you get to eat loads of sweets. I feel so excited about sharing a room with my friends because you get to talk about loads of stuff. I can’t wait until we go climbing because it’s really fun and you get to be so high. I am sure the week will go by so quickly because we will be having so much fun. Senna O’Neill, Prep 4

Eating breakfast, very nervous Packing my bag, ever so scared Got on the coach, feeling fine This is a wonderful day!

Dissecting Flowers In our science lessons we have been learning about life cycles, so we dissected flowers to see all the parts inside.

It was really interesting to explore something which we normally take for granted. We couldn’t believe all the different parts which make up a flower. Mrs Simpson gave Lily-Anna a lily and Rose a rose although unfortunately she didn’t have a poppy for Poppy. Heidi Machin and Libby Kingston

Where there’s a Will, there’s a play! William Shakespeare was a famous poet and playwright. Prep 5 were so interested in Shakespeare’s life and works that they decided to perform their own play about him. On the day of the play Lily-Anna couldn’t be there, which was a bit of a problem as she was William Shakespeare! Luckily Mrs Simpson stepped in with a wonderful performance. The Prep audience enjoyed it so much that they wanted Prep 5 to show the Senior School in assembly too, so Lily-Anna finally got a chance to perform. Everyone was thrilled! Hollie Jennings There it goes, All the actors gone, Just the Jester’s jokes, Echoing in the hall, Will’s play is over, His pen is leaking on his half written sonnet, He still needs to finish, What will be next? The Merry Wives of Windsor? Or Measure for Measure? To perform before Queen Bess. Molly Adams

Across the Universe In our space topic, we learnt about how the moon orbits the Earth and the Earth orbits the Sun. It was great fun as everyone got a chance to be one of the planets. We held torches as little suns. We turned the Earth around and looked on the axis to see when it was lunch time. Then we turned until we guessed it was tea. By Saffron Harris-Leslie and Tiana Platts The Earth travels around the Sun once every year (365 days). The Earth spins round once every 24 hours. The Moon travels around the Earth. It goes round once every 28 days.

Prep 5 Tomb Time In February, Prep 5 put on an Egyptian Extravaganza which we called Tomb Time. All the Prep School and quite a few Senior teachers came to look at our exhibits. We had mummified Barbie dolls, transformed shoeboxes into incredible Egyptian tombs, created canopic jars and shadufs as well as dressing up as famous Egyptians and even a mummy. Maddie Bradley and Molly Adams

Mummifying tomatoes and barbies For our Egyptian topic we learnt all about mummification by doing it ourselves. First, we made tombs for Barbie dolls and then mummified them. Then we investigated the best way to mummify tomatoes. We took out all the pips and put salt in one and honey on the other. We wrapped them up in bandages and left them for forty days. The honey ones went mouldy but the salt ones worked perfectly! Tiana Platts and Saffron Harris-Leslie Trip to Roman Workshop at Royal Cornwall Museum Dear Royal Cornwall Museum, Thank you for helping us learn so much about Ancient Egypt. Thank you for teaching us about the Ancient Egyptians. I enjoyed the Egyptian hunt most of all, because I felt like an archaeologist deciphering clues about their way of life. I learnt about the small figures placed on a mummy called shabtis which they believed would act as servants in the afterlife. It was fascinating that the rich would still want servants after death because they were used to them in life. From Mary Leest

Sowing the Seeds Prep 5 decided that the best way to learn about seeds in fruit and vegetables was to grow some of our own. So we got to go down to the greenhouse to plant cress seeds in different habitats to see which would grow best. Natasha Conway and Esme Owen Did you know? The biggest seed belongs to the coco de mer palm (Lodoicea maldivica). Their fruit usually contain just one seed, which can weigh almost three stone.

Tudor Knot Biscuits Prep 5 made absolutely delicious Tudor Knot biscuits as part of their History topic. Before we went into the Food Room, we tried some Tudor ginger bread – breadcrumbs and honey – it was a bit sweet for me. We washed our hands, got out our containers and ingredients and headed to the Food Room. We made sure to take off our jumpers so that we didn’t get flour all over ourselves and put on our aprons. We started by adding eggs, butter, caster sugar, aniseed and flour. Once we’d made our shapes, we put them in the oven and when they came out they smelt lovely. We went upstairs leaving a trail of floury footsteps. When we got back to the classroom we were allowed to eat one biscuit each. They were delicious. St Piran’s Parade Eloise and I stood in the playground, very hot and nervous, then we started walking. It got very warm! We saw so many people that I know! It was getting very cold now, but we kept going. When we got to the Cathedral, we saw all the fantastic plays and songs. Finally we all sang Trelawney to celebrate and strode back up the hill to school. Gigi Hamilton, Prep 4 Heavy or Hevva Cake Heavy (or Hevva) cake is a traditional Cornish delicacy associated with the Pilchard fishing industry. It was said that housewives would wait on the cliff tops for the fishing vessels to find a Pilchard shoal. As they hauled the catch aboard the fishermen would cry “Hevva” (“Here they are”) and their wives would return home to start baking the “Hevva Cake” in celebration. 500g Self-Raising Flour 250g Butter 360g Mixed dried fruit 180g Sugar 100ml Milk or Water

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Line a medium, square cake tin. 2. Rub the butter into the flour until it’s the texture of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and fruit and mix well. Add the milk and mix to a soft, stiff dough. 3. Roll out your dough on a floured surface. Press into the cake tin, pushing down firmly in the corners. Score the top of the cake with a sharp knife, making criss-cross diagonal lines. 4. Place in the middle of the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean.

“I liked scrunching the dough to make heavy cake!!” – Alexandra

5. Remove from the oven and while still warm, brush with milk and give a generous sprinkling of granulated sugar. Allow to cool and cut generous slices.

Animal Antics & Quiznic

Animal Antics The Prep School Pet Show was another resounding success. There were lots of different pets like guinea pigs, gerbils, 3-week-old ducklings and there was even a really cute baby turtle. Even if you don’t have pet

there is also lots of fun and laughter downstairs in the I.T room where you can enter various different classes such as making an animal out of mainly fruit and vegetables or bringing in a funny pet photo. Izzie Leigh, Prep 6

“Prep School was filled with an eye-catching array of animalinspired art, creative writing and family pets for our Annual Pet Show. There were some truly outstanding entries this year. Well done to everyone who entered, yet again creating such original pieces of art, innovative displays and showing why you are all incredibly knowledgeable and responsible animal lovers” Mrs Miller

Animal Antics & Quiznic Quiznic This term the PTA helped Prep School to hold the Quiznic, which is a cross between a quiz and a picnic. Lots of people took part and everyone particularly liked the spaghetti and marshmallows construction challenge. Elizabeth Grande, Prep 6

quiznic ≥ noun a test of knowledge (fiercely played by some), especially as a competition between teams as a form of entertainment, combined with an occasion when a delicious packed meal is eaten outdoors. ≥ verb (quiznicked, quiznicking) [no obj.] to spend an afternoon with family and friends eating strawberries and racking your brain. PHRASES – quiznicked out INFORMAL to have depleted one’s general knowledge resources and ability to eat cake: after Round 5 we were all quiznicked out.

Best in Show

Best in Show In the summer term we visited the Royal Cornwall Show. It was so much fun singing and going round stalls. We loved exploring the sights, sounds and smells of the show. We collected lots of stall

stickers, found out how honey is made and saw lots of interesting animals. It was really nice that the whole Prep School went and everyone joined in and sang in the choir. Izzie Leigh, Prep 6

Best in Show

What a day! The Prep Choir received a resounding round of applause from huge crowds outside Cornish Mutual, Millerson and our own stand. There was more talent on show in the Flower Tent; Prep 5 received a commendation for their stunning fruits of the forest basket and Prep 2 won their category with their impressive hand-woven flower pots.

Prep School presents... The Keykeeper and the Nativity The ‘Keykeeper’ was our musical journey through history with a strong moral message at the end, pointing out how important it is for us to look after our planet. Prep 6 played the main parts and Prep 3, 4 and 5 formed the ensemble. Pre-Prep and Nursery put on a gorgeous nativity play to represent the year 1 A.D. Lilly Black, Prep 6 I was lucky enough to be cast as the Keykeeper with Lucia, Hannah, Olivia and Izzie as the four main children. We travelled back in time to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 with Lily playing Harold before going on a whistle-stop tour of different important events throughout History. We really learnt a lesson when we reached 2050. In the future everything was polluted and the girls did a wonderful job singing about how we can all stop this happening. Roisín Watson, Prep 6

“We have your newspaper headline, please make a note, Women fight for equal rights, we want to vote!” Prep 5 and 6 entertained some of the older members of our community when we repeated our performance at the Cathedral View Care home. It was quite emotional seeing the looks on the residents’ faces as we sang, particularly when we did a song about the war. Izzie Leigh, Prep 6

“What professional hostesses” – Mrs Miller

Cooking up a Storm Yes, we all love a lesson that revolves around food and in Prep 6 we are particularly lucky because we have Food lessons each week with Mrs van der Lem. This has been a massive success this year. We all love it and we can’t deny that.

We’ve made mini pizzas, smoothies, flatbreads, dips, dippers, Christmas cakes and much, much more. Our favourite foodie slice of fun this year has to have been our Buffet to say thank you to all of our Prep school teachers. We all did our part and we all had an epic time. And we think that all of the teachers loved our food. Lucia Harrison

Ancient Worlds Dr Moodie has been giving the Prep 6’s Classics lessons. We’ve been learning all about Greeks and Romans.

We’ve been learning about Pompeii and chariot racing.

Just remember this, veni, vidi vici. We came, we saw, we conquered! Well, sort of! Die dulci fruimini! Hannah Plowright Did you know? The Emperor Claudius rode an elephant when he visited Britain in AD 43. People in Britain were amazed to see such a sight.

Living Languages Mrs Griffin’s final play with the Prep 6 Latin Club, a fantastic take on Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, was brilliantly staged, perfectly acted & just a tad emotional. Macte!

Prep 6 Trips in time: Flambards and Helston Folk Museum We went to Flambards at the end of April to experience the Blitz and Victorian Village. The

Victorian village was a real experience. The air conditioning in the building made you feel like you are outside not inside. The streets and houses and shops that they made to fit in the actual building were amazing, there were different kinds of animals around the street as well. The shops were like you would have found in an actual Victorian Village. Then we went to the Blitz and the floor shook when the air raid sirens went off! We ran into the shelter and hid until the bombing sound stopped.

Did you know? Not all Victorian homes had indoor bathrooms and toilets. Many people used an outside toilet in the backyard or garden. They call it by various names, including ‘privy’, ‘convenience’ and ‘the necessary house’.

Prep 6 visited Helston Folk Museum to experience how you would feel if you were a child who went to school in the Victorian times. Our museums really are a fantastic resource. Keira Jeffrey

After lunch, with our bellies full up, we ended the day by going on some of the rides. What a fantastic day! Keira Jeffery Children often wrote on slates instead of paper. This saved the school money as paper was expensive.

Stereoscopic Viewer The Stereoscopic Viewer and Cards are an example of high Victorian engineering. Look through the viewer and you would be transported to other worlds with images of The British Empire and beyond from the safety of your living room.

Youth Speaks In January, three girls from Prep 6 went to Kea School to take part in the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition. “Orlagh did the main speech, Lucia chaired and I did the Vote of Thanks. Our speech was about diamonds: are they a girl’s best friend? Orlagh talked about a very special group of people: Prep 6. Diamonds may be more beautiful than us but we will stick up for her, we will comfort her and be her friends and laugh about the silliest things together.” Hannah Plowright “There is another group of special people who come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and a wide range of faults. They are my class mates. My class mates have known me for a long time… some might say too long but we have grown up together and we look after each other. Diamonds may be more beautiful than my friends, but no diamond can make me laugh like they do.” Orlagh Giblett

Pre Prep Sports Day Pre-Prep were joined by Naturally Learning Nursery for races, games and bags of fun at our annual Sports Day. The sun was shining and the spirit of competition was in the air. With sack races, some very fancy egg and spoons, bean bag tosses and a dressing up race there was something for everyone. We had so much fun that some brave parents even got involved!

Step Up We have been delighted this year to welcome Miss Clare as our dance teacher. As well as the extra-curricular ballet lessons, this year Prep 6 have been given the opportunity to do Street and Lyrical dance as part of the curriculum. It has been great fun and I am excited to be able to tell you that next year both Prep 6 and Prep 5 will have this opportunity. Lucy Day Freestyle Freestyle is dancing without choreography (such as you might do in your bedroom, at the club, or, wherever the mood strikes you). Experienced dancers often freestyle to the beginning of the song in class while waiting for the start of the choreography. This helps them connect with the music, which improves their dancing. Groove A groove is a large, rhythmic dance move performed using your entire body, such as you might see people doing when dancing at a party. Plie This is a French dance term borrowed from ballet. Most of hip hop is performed in plie (plee - ay), meaning with the knees bent.

Making waves With goggles & swimming caps ready, there was some tough competition at Prep School’s annual swimming galas. Congratulations to Tremayne & Benson who came out on top.

Match Point Truro High Prep 6 pupil Daisy Chapman continues to move up the performance ladder in tennis. Daisy, a member of Truro Tennis Club, was presented with the James Webster Memorial Trophy earlier this year for her outstanding contribution to junior tennis in Cornwall as a result of her phenomenal success at national level.

Daisy also represented Cornwall this summer at the HSBC Road to Wimbledon finals - the biggest junior tournament in British tennis. She competed against other finalists – aged 14 or under – from across the UK on the world famous grass courts at the Wimbledon All England Club. Daisy’s first qualifying round was at Truro High School. Already an accomplished player with a national ranking, Daisy went straight through to the semi final of the county final, which she won 4-0 4-0. She followed this convincing performance in the final with a 4-2 4-0 victory.

“Playing at international level makes me feel like a proper tennis player now I’m out on the big circuit. You meet girls from all over the world who share the same passion as you.” Daisy

““Daisy’s ambition is to become a professional tennis player, which will take considerable dedication and commitment. She is also a high achiever academically, which is where Truro High School comes in. The staff are fantastic, they organise her academic and sporting commitments to ensure she has the very best chance of fulfilling her potential in both.” Daisy’s Mum, Sara

Fundraising A right to education We were very moved this year by the awful earthquakes in Nepal and decided to raise money for ‘Schoolinabag’ which is a charity that provides these fully equipped school bags for the children there. First, for a warm up, we had a home clothes day and a bring-and-buy sale at school.

Then Prep 6 took what was left over to sell at a car boot sale in Falmouth. Unfortunately the sale was cancelled but Asda Penryn very kindly agreed for us to set up our stall in their entrance hall at the last minute. This turned out to be a fantastic spot and we came back with over £400 and nearly all of our stock sold. Altogether we have raised enough money to buy 110 school bags. Fundraising Send my Friend to School Did you know? 58 million children are still missing out on school across the world. Prep 5 were very excited this year to send their 3D & 2D world leaders to MP Sarah Newton, on behalf of the Prep School, in support of the Send My Friend to School campaign. We hope she will give our world leaders to David Cameron so that he may take our ideas to the UN in September.

Dear Sarah Newton Truro High School for Girls would like to tell you our ideas for Send my Friend to School 2015. We think all children should go to school because children have a right to get the education they need whether they have special needs or not. We also want all countries to spend more money on education and school facilities and resources. Some countries need to build more schools and train more teachers. We found out that some countries like Rwanda and Vietnam are doing so well that nearly all children are in school. We want this for all children in all countries of the world. We have made 3D models to show what we would do if we were world leaders. We hope you will send our world leaders to the Prime Minister at No. 10 Downing Street so he will take our ideas to the UN in September. Thank you for reading our ideas, Libby Kingston, Isobel Datson and Jennifer Wilson, Prep 5

Clowning around Prep School came out in full force this year for Comic Relief, dressing in their favourite red clothes, wearing noses and buying cakes up at the Nursery. We were thrilled that the Choir was invited to sing at Cornish Mutual who were hosting one of the call centres. We also helped to decorate their phone room. Katie Day, Prep 6

“It was really fun. I especially enjoyed getting my face painted for such an important cause Evie Ferris, Prep 5

World Book Day Book Worms This year’s World Book Day Fair really spread the reading bug! The girls created some fantastic costumes to become their favourite characters, listened to stories and created posters to promote reading. Thank you to all the parents who bought books. We sold £765 worth of books and have used our commission to buy more books for the school library. Prep School celebrated the joy of reading by dressing up as their favourite fictional characters for World Book day this year, with costumes from fiction to non-fiction and from Michael Morpurgo to The Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. What a great way to bring books to life! Katie Thomas, Prep 6

Checkmate For the second year running Prep 4 pupil, Celeste Woodall, was crowned Cornwall’s Under 9 Chess Champion at the Regional Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge. Celeste won an outstanding five out of the six games she played. Truro High’s youngest competitive player, Prep 2 pupil, Chloe Frankland stormed to victory winning the Under 7 Girls Trophy, which also involved playing in a combined section with the more experienced Under 8s. This was only the second time Chloe had competed outside of the school. “In chess you play tournaments, you sit in a room with lots of people from many different schools and if you finish your game quickly the chess teachers tell you to play a friendly game, which is just another game until the other players have finished. In a tournament you play six games and have breaks in between. The older players have to play with chess clocks. They get timed an hour per game. I love playing chess because it is so much fun!” Amber Peake, Prep 4
