Pearl Lowe

A vintage jewel We talk to the beautiful Pearl Lowe about her life in the country, being a busy mama and her stunning new children’s collection Pearl Lowe Petite.

35

Can you tell us about your new Petite collection? It’s a luxury kids dress up / party collection. It’s totally gorgeous and I love the circus theme. How did this come about? After Peacocks finished, I didn’t feel very inspired to make women’s dresses anymore. I wrote and released a vintage interiors book and then last Christmas, I found some sequin fabric and started making curtains and then a top hat and then a cape and it developed into a kids range from there. So it was quite organic. Have you always been creative? My whole life. When I was 10 years old, I designed a range of tops for my mum’s shop in Covent Garden. I was always customising my clothes. Tell us about your early career. You were a singer before, how did you get into fashion?

36

I loved singing, but found it hard to be away from my kids. I started designing lace curtains for a house we bought in Camden, that then became a business. The same thing happened when we moved to Hampshire. I started designing lace dresses for my post baby body that became a business and then a 3 year contract with the high street brand Peacocks. You’re known for your amazing vintage style. What attracts you to vintage clothing and interiors? Thank you! I love both the history and originality aspect of both vintage clothes and furniture. I love being the only person to own things. Can you tell us a bit about family life and your routine? I take my kids to school every morning around 8am, then I go to nearby Babington House and swim and then go into my office for 10am and start working. I’m usually finished in time to pick

37

38

the kids up at 4.30pm. I go home, cook supper, help with the kids homework, maybe watch a bit of TV or a film with the kids. I’m usually in bed by 10pm. Wow, it sounds like you’re a very busy mum! How do you have time to fit everything in? I am busy and sometimes it gets a bit too much! I’m lucky as I have older children, so my eldest can help with the others. I don’t go out at night as much as I used to as I’m exhausted by 10pm! Sounds familiar! So what do you do in your downtime? I see friends for lunch and we go for long walks in the countryside and we watch films in front of log fires. Ooh, it sounds idyllic! The Petite collection has a real element of fun to it mixed with a touch of glamour. Was it important to keep your own style within the collection?

It wasn’t as thought out as that. I just love vintage costumes, so I took my inspiration from there. I definitely want kids to feel the fantasy element in my clothes. In this age of computers, I feel kids have lost a bit of that. So what are your plans for the future and the ‘Pearl Lowe Petite’ brand? I want to carry on making dress up collections. I have a trunk idea, that will be launching in time for Christmas. I’m going to be stocking in a couple of department stores and I’m hoping on expanding to womenswear again. A lot of my friends have been asking if I can make some of the capes and jumpsuits in their sizes! I’d also love to open a shop one day! Thanks to Pearl for giving us a little insight into her family and work. The Petite Pearl Lowe AW15 collection will launch exclusively at Harrods from the 5th October 2015.

The Trade S ho ws

Well what a busy few months we’ve had visiting all the trade shows and seeing what’s in store for next Summer 2016. We visited Dot to Dot and Bubble London in the UK, then travelled across to Paris to visit Kid-Shows and Playtime. It was wonderful to see such inspiring brands and their gorgeous collections. Have a look at our report on what’s hot for next Summer. We first went to Dot to Dot where we saw lots of old friends as well as met lovely new ones. Held in the gorgeous Vinyl Factory in the heart of Soho, Dot to Dot is a more intimate setting with an exclusive vibe perfect for new upcoming independents as well as more established brands. For their 4th edition, Dot to Dot had 30 exhibitors including many Little Flea brands. It was also great to meet the people behind Papu, Nor-Folk, Tiba & Marl, Milk & Biscuits and Mr Uky, all who create inspiring stand-out collections. Highlights were new hats from Braveling, gorgeous roll up wash bags from Atticus & Gilda and pretty necklaces from LucyPeachSlice.

54

We then jumped on the Eurostar over to Paris for a couple of days to look at the fabulous French shows. First stop, Kid-Shows. This was held at the beautiful Bastille Design Center and included 45 stunning brands. It was so lovely to catch up with Jetpaq and Bobo Choses as well as talk to Sons & Daughters, Coral & Tusk, Freddy Bib, Titlee and Tito and Zaira. Like Dot to Dot, Kid-Shows has a more intimate setting allowing visitors to leisurely walk round and really get to know the exhibitors. Although France was having a mini heatwave at the time, the space was light and comfortable to showcase the brands beautifully.

55

The next day was all about Playtime. We got the coach over to l’Espace Evénement, in Parc Floral de Paris and judging by the queue to get on a coach, we knew it was going to be busy! This was the 18th edition of Playtime and was organized around the theme of ‘movement’. Over 470 exhibitors were showcasing their collections, so we certainly had to move fast to ensure we saw them all! Despite the scorching temperatures, Playtime recorded 6256 visitors and it was a fantastic show. There were over 100 new exhibitors mainly French but also British, Spanish, Portuguese and Belgian as well as others. It was so lovely to wander around so many creative people all passionately selling their beautifully displayed collections. We saw so many Little Flea friends such as Annaliv, Doodle Do, Indikidual, Karen Brost, Little Indians and Little Mashers and also met many new ones such as Beau Loves, Atelier DJM, Little Creative Factory, Raspberry Plum, Sproet & Sprout, Zoobug, Well Grounded Company and many more.

Over 6000 visitors braved the heatwave at Playtime Paris this year!

56

From top left: The Little Shoemaker. Bakker made with love. Bubble at the Design Centre, Islington. Fantastic seminars.

Utterly exhausted, it was back to the UK to visit Bubble London. Set in the bright and airy Islington Design Centre, The Bubble exhibition is always meticulously laid out and easy to navigate your way around. There were 280 exhibitors showcasing clothing, accessories, toys, home-ware and gifts. There was an exciting seminar programme which included an interactive presentation from stylist, Fran Lee who spoke about S/S16’s hottest colours, fabrics and shapes. 14 brands were short-listed for the Bubble London Rising Star Award including Mr Wolf, Little Kokoro, Where’s that Bear? and Little Lulus. Their homegrown section celebrates British brands such as The Little Shoemaker, Holly Hastie, Happy Headbangers Club, Oh..My! and Love Boo. This year Bubble exhibitors included Little Flea friends such as Lilly + Sid, Doodle Do, Nature Zoo and Panda and the Sparrow. During our trade show visits, we saw trends such as pastels, clean organic clothing, fun graphic and geometric prints, hand-painted illustrations, lace, mixing of patterns, tribal/ethnic influences and distressed denim. We’re excited for Summer already! 57

JETPAQ The amazing Jet Teunis of JETPAQ lets us in to her wonderful world of design, hand screen printing and hand dying and also tells us a little about the new collection.

P

lease tell us about you and your early life

When I was young, I started to make clothes for my dolls. I was designing dresses and suits with my moms left over fabrics. After high school I applied to the Dutch Art Academy ArtEZ in Arnhem, and I got in. (it’s the same school Viktor&Rolf and Iris van Herpen went to). I had to design womens and menswear for three years, after that I had an internship at HEMA, in the boys clothes and accessories dept. From that moment I knew I should do childrenswear, it just was a better fit. After graduation in 2013 I started the brand JETPAQ. What inspired you to start JETPAQ? My mission is to make children’s clothing for children again. So no mini-me, no mini grown ups, children should be themselves and should be able to play, run, climb and have fun! Clothes that can get dirty, which are very comfortable and especially inspired and designed for kids. A lot of love goes into the making of the garments - is this important to you? Yes it is. But more important is that it’s made with care for the people who worked on it (fairly paid) and for the environment. Besides that I think clothes should last long, should be washable at 30/40 degrees and be great quality. To reach this goal we think about every piece, make it special and I think the little costumers will feel that. When a model is wearing one of our garments, most of the time they want it immediately (you can see that in the photoshoot video on our Vimeo). They feel like they could wear it for days. We want to reach that feeling, that a JET-

78

PAQ piece is special and one of their favourite pieces in their wardrobe, that they wait in front of the washing machine for until it’s ready! Can you tell us about your dying techniques and the process of creating a JETPAQ piece? The dying techniques and screen print process makes JETPAQ special. It’s all done by hand so that makes every piece a little bit different and therefore unique. But the process itself is the secret of the brand. My boyfriend and I still do that ourselves, nobody gets to see it, because it’s the specialty of the brand.

79

80

What is a typical day like for you? I wake up, then I go to the gym or for a run, because I think it’s very important to build strength and energy as a brand manager. After that I go for a walk with the Dalmatian Dino (the mascot of the brand), normally we walk from our home to the studio. Then my workday will start, we finish the older collection or work on a new one with the team and the lovely interns. Lunch time is a special moment at our studio, because it feels like we are a little family (the interns call it the JETPAQ-family). We have a delicious lunch with the whole team together. We chat, think and discuss everything of the day or the day before. After that we work till 5 or 6pm, then we clean up, go home and I answer my emails in the evening, sit in the garden, have a good meal, drink some wine (not on a typical day!) Then a good sleep and start all over again. Your A/W 15 collection takes us on an adventure to the moon. Is space and the universe something that interests you?

spires me to discover the world, the meaning or the answer behind that sentence. Then we build a story around it, like ‘loop naar de maan’ which means ‘Go walk to the moon!’ became a story about kids who travel to the moon at night, with 1000 ladders, a flag to mark their visit and feeling light as a feather. What could be better then spending a night on the moon? Can you give us any hints on what the S/S16 collection is inspired by? Of course I can! The collection is called ‘wat ruist er door het struikgewas’ which means ‘what rustles through the bushes?’. We searched for the answer to that question! What is there walking, rustling and sneeking through our backyard bushes....? We’ll have to wait until next Summer to find out! For A/W though, visit their website at www.jetpaq.com

Everything in the world interests me. Small and tiny like a little feather or big and endless like space, the galaxy and the moon. My inspiration is always about discovering, learning, searching and a little imagination. My collections always start with a Dutch sentence, from a book, a poem or a song. The sentence in81

Ruby Loves

Ruby fell in love with the amazing softness of merino when she tried on the gorgeous products from Smalls. This wonderful collection of long sleeve and short sleeve tops, vests, tanks and trousers are made for comfort and that is exactly what Ruby loved about them. Beautifully soft, cosy and warm, perfect for lazy days, under school-wear in the colder months and running around outside when it’s hot. These pieces are all-year-round items that are made to last. 91

They are also one of the villages to play home to the notorious Plunge Pool, where visitors are invited to test their nerve in the freezing temperatures. Of course, at the heart of each Subtropical
