Spotlight on S/S 15 The twice yearly childen's trade shows Bubble London and Dot to Dot, had us all of a tither here at the Little Flea HQ, we were excited to see what our fave brands were up to and also check out what up and coming treasures we would uncover! Read on to find out what S/S 15 brings to the kids market. Exciting!

!! !

alking into Bubble London is a spectacle to be marvelled. Delicious prints and colours pop out from every angle and the vast array of gorgeous clothing and accessories had the Little Flea team drooling.

W

Its almost impossible to get round the hundreds of exhibitors, so getting there early was a must to ensure everyone was seen.

27

It was fantastic to see Braveling, Lilly + Sid, Hugs Factory, Question Everything, The Bright Company, SKK Lighting, Bejaks, Rockahula and their amazing new collections for S/S 2015. But also we were introduced to lots of new brands

London

that have some fantastic ideas and gorgeous products. The BUBBLE GUM section was brimming with exciting new brands like Ava and Luc, Darlo, Sarah Elwick, 2H Knits, Amy and Ivor and Blade and Rose along with many more. We absolutely loved Darlo’s amazing charitable project where buying one vest provides one child’s meals for a week in India. Wow! A huge congratulations to Plumeti Rain who won the Bubble London Rising Star award and to Beau Loves UK who won the Boxpark competition to showcase their latest collection in one of BoxParks 300 square foot pop up ‘Box Shops’ in Shoreditch this month (September).

Dot to Dot After the madness of Bubble, it was time to hop on a tube Eastbound to Bethnal green and the V&A Museum of Childhood for the Dot to Dot London pop up showroom. The midday heat was beating down on us, so it was a welcome treat to be offered some coconut water on arrival to cool down! Showcasing small independent brands all with a creative choice of products, this gorgeous mix of children’s fashion and lifestyle brands was a feast to the eyes. It was wonderful catching up with Animalesque, Annaliv,

Braveling, Marmalade and Mash, Piupia, Sally Nencini and Seventy Tree. It was also fabulous to see some of the other amazing brands that were excitedly showing their S/S 15 collections. A smaller and more intimate setting allowed us to focus on the brands and their creators and really get to know the ethos behind their labels. All brands hail from the UK and we really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and creative buzz that emulated from the setting. Can't wait for next summer!

Ruby Loves...

In this issue, 'Ruby Loves' is inspired by a beautiful dream catcher swinging in the trees at a wonderful naming ceremony we attended recently. Having always loved dreamcatchers, she set to work re-creating it. All you need is a hula hoop, string, selection of ribbons and feathers, needle and thread. You could do it in your sleep!

35

And here it is, beautifully swinging

amongst the leaves. Ruby wants to make a heap of them for the garden. You could make themed ones for a party, one in your favourite colour or even make one as a gift for a newborn's nursery. Whatever you do, you're sure to have sweet dreams! Here are the stunning designs that Ruby was inspired by at www.mrandmrsunique.co.uk naming ceremony. Made by my very talented friend, Michelle McLeish.

atasha Collins is the cake artist behind Nevie-Pie Cakes, the boutique cake making c o m p a n y, b a s e d i n Hertfordshire. Natasha has an incredible talent and has always loved baking and after a career in textile design and art directing, she returned to her baking roots to use her incredible talents once again. Nevie-Pie Cakes specialises in painted cakes, cookies and cupcakes and will make any occasion totally unique.

Monster!

These amazing cookies were made for our Little Flea shoot by Natasha and they showcase wonderfully how adaptable she is. From weddings to kids parties to celebrity clients to a Christmas range in Selfridges, Nevie-Pie cakes is going from strength to strength. Read on to see what Natasha has to say about her baking roots, favourite cake and an appearance on Blue Peter...

Lion cushion ÂŁ16 Ava & Yves.

44

What was the first cake you ever made?

I remember making a loaf cake with my best friend, we must have been about seven. The top was cracked and we covered it in green water icing! I have definitely improved since then!

!

How did you start painting cakes?

I did a degree in illustration, but I learnt how to paint during my career in textile design. I then used that skill when I was asked to paint a 'Happy Birthday' banner onto a 70th birthday cake. I tried (for a very long time) to pipe a message and eventually gave up. So I decided to paint it using food colours. It was so successful that I immediately made some cookies, covered and painted them. I haven't looked back since!

!

What is the best cake you've ever made? It has to be a gold cake, as i'm a sucker for a bit of bling!

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere! From wrapping paper to fabric, packaging or clothes! I spend an awful lot of time on Pinterest!

!

What has been your highlight so far?

Visiting Number 10 Downing Street to help with an event was a high point and also last year I went on Blue Peter to demonstrate making severed toe cookies! I was given a Blue Peter badge which I wear with pride!

!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Painting the first few flowers and then working out the design and I love the last few strokes and looking at it when it's finished. I love the reaction from clients when they see their cake, it's a real privilege to help make someones celebration even more special.

Pippa's Picks

Ready Steady A wonderful little package arrived through the post a few weeks ago containing the loveliest little sewing kit from Clothkits. Pippa couldn't wait to try out her sewing skills. Here's the result... Nanuq the fishing Eskimo sewing kit comes with everything you need to start sewing. I love the colours and pattern.

I set to work cutting out the pattern. It was easy as there was a clear black guideline to cut around. Mummy had to help with the instructions, but it was quite simple to follow. 78

Once cut out I needed to put the right sides together and sew around the edges. I started with the little fish, but it was too tricky for my little fingers, so I needed help with him! Sewing round Nanuq was easy peasy though as the black guidelines showed through so I could follow the lines. Nanuq's little fish. We decided to change the orange wool supplied to a lovely green ribbon.

79

Nanuq started to come to life!

Turning it inside out was hard, so again I needed a bit of help. Then it was time to stuff it. I enjoyed that, that bit was lots of fun!

And here she is, the finished toy. I re-named her Nanuqa because she's a she not a he! Nanuqa is really soft and cuddly and a lovely size. I'm off to bed now to introduce her to all my toys.

Pippa's verdict • • • •

Easy to cut out Clear guide makes it easy to sew A few tricky bits that I needed an adult for Lovely size and very cuddly

Nanuq the fishing Eskimo sewing kit is available to buy from Clothkits for £15. 80

When little ones come along and your life changes forever, do holidays have to change with it? Travel guru and founder of Kid & Coe, Zoie Kingsbery Coe doesn't think so...! Words Anna Cascarina

!

86

Travel is a huge part of our life and we don't want our children to think the world is a five star hotel authenticity in travel is so important.

oie Kingsbery has used her expertise in managing her musician husband's world tours and their family's travels, to create a new type of travel website with one mission; to make family travel simpler.!

!

With over 300 residences worldwide with more being added daily, Kids & Coe is the perfect alternative to a hotel when travelling as a family. With curated properties in coveted locations, Kid & Coe offers easy booking, family networks and local knowledge and online neighbourhood guides to ensure travelling with kids is a breeze. ! Little Flea caught up with Zoie to find out more: LF

How did Kid and Coe come about?

ZK

We were on tour in Sydney as a

!

family and were lucky enough to be checking into a nice hotel. But within two days we realised it wasn’t going to work for us as a family. Once my son was asleep at night, we were tiptoeing around him in the dark, whispering so we wouldn’t wake him. I think all parents that have stayed in hotel rooms with their kids know this scenario! We realised he wouldn’t be eating any

! 87

!

particularly healthy meals and we just needed more space to enjoy our family time together. When I started the process of looking for an apartment to rent, it took days. Most were unsuitable for a young child. I had to go and personally check them all out. When we found somewhere that did work, I then had to source a baby equipment rental firm to kit us out with highchairs, stair gates and the rest. It took a whole week out of our trip just getting to that point. And that’s how it started. From that I realised that staying in a house as a family was the way to go. Spending too much time going through uninspiring websites looking at uninspiring houses that claimed they were family-friendly made me realise there was a real lack in the market for people who need the space of a home the most.

LF! What's important to you in a family holiday?!

!

ZK! These days, I spend so much time in cities that I crave nature and quiet and disconnection when I travel. My kids are New Yorkers, and it’s really important to me that they understand there’s a big wonderful world out there. We’re seeking a more authentic and adventurous way to travel than kids clubs and hotels. !

!

LF! How do you manage running a successful business with young children?!

!

ZK! When I’m with my kids, I work hard at being present and not multitask so the time we spend together is valued time and I’m giving them my undivided attention. I rely heavily on my mom, my sisters, my friends and my babysitter. My husband’s work schedule is unique - he’s home for stretches of time and then gone for weeks. It’s a special time when he’s home, and it makes me feel a little less guilty those nights I have to work late. It’s not balanced, it’s a constant learning curve, and a constant point of discussion

A selection of properties from Kid & Coe

amongst my close friends! They’re all my inspiration really, seeing everyone struggle with similar struggles. And I try to remind myself, we’re all doing the best we can! LF! What are your tips for family fun in New York City?!

! Zoie at home in NY. Photography Matt Barrick for Little Years

ZK! My family has been enjoying Governor’s Island this summer. They have 88

LF! Best place ever visited? Next place on the list?!

! great family programming and it didn’t hurt that they were showing the World Cup! ! The ferry ride there is an adventure and any place that has wide open green spaces in this city gets my vote. We also like heading to the Chelsea Water Park for summertime splashing and the Children’s Museum of Arts for messy creating. !

!

LF! If you could have one family holiday where would you go and why?!

!

ZK! It’s difficult to narrow down the best place I’ve ever visited but Trancoso in Brazil would be high up there on the list. Next place on my list to visit would be our great property in Patagonia or the Galapagos. !

!

LF ! What's a must to pack in your suitcase?!

!

ZK! Bathing suits, sunscreen and a thin cashmere jumper!!

ZK! That’s a good (and tough) question! I would want to head to South America with my kids. I love the warm culture and children are welcomed everywhere. We have some amazing villas in Brazil that I can’t wait to try out with my family! see Brazil Listings on Kid & Coe. !

!

LF! What is the 'Go Bag' all about on Instagram?!

!

ZK! Every month we round up some of our favorite family/travel-centric products and pack it all up as a giveaway. It’s pretty inspiring to be working with so many great brands in the same creative space. ! 89

Photography Matt Barrick Little Years

Kid & Coe is built by families. Almost everybody that works here is a mom or dad and passionate about exploring the world with their kids.

!

LF! Any tips for making travelling with a family less stressful?!

!

ZK! I think packing lightly really helps with the stress levels all around. No matter where we’re going we try not to take more than a week or so’s worth of clothing, and of course staying in a house or villa makes laundry easy. Also, never underestimate the power of new little toys in your carry-on: a fresh ! colouring book and Playdoh, tiny sticker pads, and Eye Spy books for little ones. And of course, when all else fails, Cadbury buttons, a fully stocked iPad, and a lolly to pull out at the absolute last moment to soothe a crying baby if their ears are hurting due to!

ZK! Kid & Coe is built by families. Almost everybody that works here is a mom or dad, and passionate about exploring the world with their kids.
