The Shazam for plants! Available for free on both Android and Apple, this app is being hailed as the Shazam for plants. In case you don’t know, Shazam is an app that listens to and can identify music, informing you of the artist, title, album it’s from etc and provides lots of related links and information. PlantNet is not quite as sophisticated but it is a fantastic tool for helping you to find out which plant or flower is at your green fingertips. Using the app, you can take a picture or select one from your gallery of a leaf, flower, fruit or stem and then you are presented with matches from an extensive and constantly growing database. Each possible match presents you with many different pictures to help you confirm your selection and verify the Family, Genus, Species and Common name. The app features visualization software which recognizes many plant species, the number of which included and images used by the

Alarm Clock for Me free is available on Apple & Android and is
a great alternative to the standard clock app for loads of reasons. You can turn your device into an alarm clock that plays your favourite tunes, a bedside clock with several gorgeous themes and current weather information, and a sleep timer that lulls you to sleep to relaxing tunes or white noise. If you keep your phone next to your bed, instead of flicking it on through the night to see the time, set the cool blue clock face to stay on while you’re phone’s charging. It’s a great function if you’re away from home, whether in a hotel that has no alarm clock or at friends or family. It means you can also place your device on the other side of the room so that you’re not tempted to use it through the night but you can still glance at it to see the time. You can adjust the brightness so it doesn’t disturb you and you can set unlimited alarms/music to help get you up on time. You can also activate bedtime reminders based on the time you set your morning alarm for. A full sleep cycle typically lasts 90 minutes and a good night’s sleep consists of 5-6 full cycles. The secret to waking up rested and more energetic is to wake up in-between full cycles. The clock determines the best time for you to go to bed depending on the first alarm you set for the morning, taking into account the time it takes to fall asleep, on average 15 minutes. You can opt to get reminders with the best options, eg for an 8am alarm you’ll get a reminder at 10.30pm for ideal bed times of 10.45pm, 0.15am or 1.45am. Speaking Clock: TellMeTheTime for Android is a great app when you want to keep your eye (or ear) on the time without constantly picking up your phone. You may be getting ready for the school run or leaving for work or you might be lying in the bath or relaxing in the sun. You can hear the time at any interval from every minute to every 2/5/10/15/20/30/60 minutes. You can also set the proximity sensor so that when you’re in bed you can wave your hand over the phone and hear the time - much better than turning the bright display on.

WhatsUp With These days high-tech ways to trick us out of our money come thick and fast and there are currently a few of them targeted at WhatsApp users. The popular service, owned by Facebook and used by over a billion people, allows users to talk, send messages, images and video for free. One of the new scams preys on the fact that some people may be unsure about whether it should be costing them money. It aims to trick users into paying for the free messaging service. Users have reported receiving a text message, which appears to come from WhatsApp, stating that their "subscription has expired" and inviting the recipient to click on a link and pay 99p for a "lifetime subscription" to the service. Although WhatsApp used to charge users 99p a year, the messaging service went free at the beginning of 2016. Since then, however, a number of scams have attempted to trick users into paying for messages. At the end of last year, many users received a message stating that WhatsApp would "become chargeable" on January 1, 2017. It went on to offer the solution of forwarding the message to ten contacts in order to avoid the charge of "0.01p per message". The hoax targeted inactive users and claims that when users have forwarded the message on to ten people their WhatsApp icon, that is usually green, will turn blue. WhatsApp users also need to be aware of a new malicious link that is making the rounds at the moment. It tries to trick users into installing malware in their systems by offering the option of installing WhatsApp in different colours. After clicking on the link, the user is asked to share the site with his/her friends in order to get themselves verified. After this is done, the friends receive a message that reads, “I love the new colours for WhatsApp,” along with the fake URL. Many fake URLs, just like the one circulating on the social media platforms right now, consist of letters from the Cyrillic alphabet. This helps users to identify the malicious messages if observed carefully. Another scam, which has also been seen on Facebook and Twitter, attempts to lure users into clicking on malicious links with promises of £100 worth of Sainsbury's/Tesco/The Asda vouchers. WhatsApp's response to such scams is clear, advising users on how to take action: "We always advise you to block the sender, disregard the message and delete it." For future reference, WhatsApp says to look out for these points when you suspect a hoax: The sender claims to be affiliated with WhatsApp The message content includes instructions to forward the message The message claims you can avoid punishment, like account suspension, if you forward the message The message content includes a reward or gift from WhatsApp or another person You don’t recognise the sender
Status Feature Update WhatsApp Status now lets users post decorated photos, videos and GIFs in a slideshow that their contacts can see, but that disappears in 24 hours. It’s another Facebook-owned Snapchat Stories copycat, but the twist is that it’s end-to-end encrypted like WhatsApp messaging. It replaced the old text-only “Status” product that functioned more like “away” messages, though WhatsApp eventually added the old feature back in the About section in the Settings where you click on your profile picture. Users can watch updates from friends and reply privately, shoot and adorn their imagery with drawings and captions and send their creations to all of their contacts. Sending media to specific friends is still done through message threads. Status could also open up new advertising opportunities for WhatsApp. If it followed Snap and Instagram’s lead, it could insert full-screen ads in-between friends’ Statuses. Critics have questioned why Facebook needed to put a Stories product in each of its core apps, including its chat products Messenger and WhatsApp, rather than just Facebook and Instagram. But WhatsApp’s deep traction in international markets where Snapchat hasn’t caught on yet gave it an opportunity to be the first popular app to offer Stories in many countries. Not only has this given WhatsApp Status rapid growth, but it could box out Snapchat’s ability to grow in developing markets. Now WhatsApp has 1.2 billion monthly users, with users sending 60 billion messages per day, including 3.3 billion photos, 760 million videos and 80 million GIFs. Mad isn’t it?

As featured in Issue 1 of LittleSutton.com, Google Photos offers unlimited storage for your photos with their app that is available for both Apple and Android. We discussed how the app can be used to store all of your photos in the cloud and prevent you from losing all of your pics should you end up with a damaged, lost or stolen phone. In the same article we also described how to backup all of your contacts too. If you haven’t done so yet, stop tempting fate and prevent future tears by having a look at the article in the online version of the magazine in the eMagazine section on the website. Google Photos are frequently rolling out new features in the app and the most recent is an archive facility so that you can hide photos or videos from the main photo album. The feature is currently rolling out to Android users. An app update isn't required as long as you have Google Photos version 2.15 installed. You will also be able to access the feature on iOS and the web. If you don't have access quite yet, keep checking back. To archive, an item in Google Photos, open the app and select one or more items. Next, tap on the menu button > Archive. Additionally, a new Archive menu option will appear after you archive for the first time. Archiving a photo or video does not delete it from your Google Photos account, it merely hides it from the main Photos feed. The items you archive are left in any previously assigned albums, and are still searchable. Essentially, the archive feature is designed to remove the clutter from your Photos stream or avoid a potentially embarrassing situation when letting someone scroll through your photos. Google have also announced further upgrades for the application, which is now being used by 500 million people every month. The app now has a new social feature called Suggested Sharing, which uses facial recognition to suggest which photos you should send to your friends and family. Another option called Shared Libraries will allow you to automatically share either all your photos or a subset of your photos with specific people. Suggested Sharing is a lot like the functionality today included in Facebook’s standalone private sharing app, Facebook Moments. The app will identify who from your Google Contacts is in your photo, and then give you a nudge to share your photos with them from the app. Shortly after you take a photo, a notification would pop up saying something like “5 new photos with Dave, Dave, Phil and Dave. Share with them?” You can then respond to this alert to share your photos automatically. For those who don’t have the app, Google Photos will even send an SMS notification. You’ll be able to see all your sharing activities and Google Photos’ sharing suggestions in a new Sharing tab, which will roll out on Android, iOS and web in the coming weeks. A second feature called Shared Libraries is designed to make it easier to share with the select people in your life who you’re very close with – like a family member, best friend or partner. In the Google Photos app, you’ll be able to turn on a setting that will automatically share photos with these designated contacts. But you don’t have to share your entire library, you can choose to toggle on a feature that lets you only share photos containing particular individuals. For example, a mum could automatically share all photos of her children with their dad, where they would be automatically available on his smartphone, as well. The recipient can also choose to automatically save these photos, so they will also show up in search and in the movies, collages and other creations Google Photos makes for you. Shared Libraries will also roll out on Android, iOS and web in the weeks ahead. Control the brightness of your flashlight: Flashlights always come to use. However, the one provided in iPhones are extremely bright — which can come across as annoying. There is an option in iPhone that allows users to control the intensity of their flashlight. Simply hold the flashlight icon down and an option that reads: ‘Bright Light, Medium Light and Low Light” will appear. Choose the intensity of the flashlight according to your preference.
