WELCOME to LittleSutton.com, a brand new website and magazine launching as a hub of useful information and discussion for our local community.
We invite everybody to visit our home on the internet to share and find details regarding topics such as Local Events • Memories & Pictures of Little Sutton and Surrounding Areas • Items For Sale & For Free • Lost & Found • Hints & Tips • Enquiries & Advice • Jobs & Opportunities • Classes & Activities • Travel News & Timetables. We would love for LittleSutton.com to develop over time and become the first port of call for a wide range of local interests, news and communications throughout the village and surrounding areas. With your help we’d like to create a great hub for all of the community. Accompanying the website is our magazine, the LittleSutton.com bi-monthly advertising publication with a bit of a difference. We’re making it different by providing informative content based on a topic that practically all of us have in common…… SMARTPHONES!!
These days, most of us own a phone (or two). A lot of people are entirely comfortable with the features and functions of their device, however many won’t necessarily be aware of the power that we have at our fingertips. Picking the brains of friends and family from time to time might help a bit, but overall we might not get anywhere near our full value for money or completely understand how to get the best from our phones. How often, for example, have you heard that somebody has lost their device along with all of their contacts, photos, texts etc, etc? With smartphones, this is completely avoidable and all content can be safeguarded easily. There’s so many apps out there that can help make our lives easier but sometimes we just don’t realise what we’re missing out on. That’s where we want to help, by introducing useful features and offer insights through articles & snippets to help you make the most out of these powerful gadgets. Please visit LittleSutton.com to see how our new community hub will be useful for you.

0151 339 9284 And DON’T forget your pics! Apple devices (1) On your old/current phone, make sure that you’re logged into your iCloud account and connected to WiFi. (2) To check if you’re logged in, head to Settings> iCloud – if your name and Apple ID are displayed at the top of the page then you’re logged in and ready to get started. (3) Once you’re logged in, make sure that the option to sync contacts is toggled on. (4) Go to Settings > iCloud > Backup and tap "Back Up now". The length of time this takes depends on how much content you’re backing up and the speed of your Internet connection. (5) During the initial setup of your new iPhone, you’ll be prompted for your Apple ID details. (6) When asked to choose from a backup or set up as a new iPhone, select "Restore from iCloud Backup". (7) Select the latest backup from the list and the restore will begin. The length of time this takes depends on your Internet connection. (8) Once the restore has finished, the phone will restart and should be ready to use.
There can’t be many phone related incidents that fill us with more dread than realising we’ve lost videos or photos of precious moments that we can never get back again. A cracked screen is fixable but once a picture is gone, it’s gone! Don’t lose a phone or drop it in your drink only to realise that you haven’t backed up your photos. Apple and Android owners can avoid this by using the unlimited automatic backup feature of the free Google Photos app. Do it NOW to avoid regrets later. Apple iCloud restrictes users to 5GB of storage per Apple ID. This can quickly fill up and force you to pay for extra space or to delete pics. Just tap the menu and then settings to enable Backup & Sync. Photos are searchable by the people, places and things in them – no tagging required. Get automatically created movies, collages, animations, panoramas and more from your photos or easily create them yourself. Other features include Advanced Editing, Smart Automatic Albums, Easy Sharing and Rediscover which retrieves photos and creates collages from this date in your past. Access your pics from any device and at www.photos.google.com – your photos are safe, secure, and private to you.

Backup & File Storage Tools SMS Backup+ is an Android app that can save all of your call logs, SMS text and MMS messages to the cloud. Normally, if you replace a phone or do a factory reset then all of your messages will be lost but this app syncs them to your Gmail account automatically, saving them as if they were emails from the people that you talk to or text. It labels each as either SMS, MMS or Call Log to make them easy to search or filter and when you get a new phone they can be quickly restored or you can just leave them in your Gmail. A great way for recalling when you previously spoke to somebody, saving important or precious messages, even covering you in case you delete them by mistake. Hullomail, available on both Apple and Android is an answer machine app that shows you a list of voicemails that you’ve received. No longer do you need to listen to a monotonous voice telling you to press “this” to listen, “that” to skip or “the other” to delete and then the same for the next message and the next one and the next one…… Now you can just listen to or delete your messages in whatever order you choose. If you want to pay for extras there are loads of other features such as saving messages to the cloud, forwarding them by email or having messages transcribed so that you can read them if it’s inconvenient to listen. You can even record personalised greetings for each of your contacts for when you can’t answer. Dumpster is an invaluable Android only app that acts as a recycle bin for files that you delete from your device. It works the same way as the Recycle Bin on your computer. Any files that you delete, Documents, Images, Audio, Videos, Apps & many more, will be held by the Dumpster until you confirm that you definitely want to delete them permanently. You’ll understand how much of a life saver this app is if you’ve ever deleted something from your gallery by mistake! Just be sure to review and empty the Dumpster’s bin every now and again because space will not be freed up on your device until you release it from here.
DiskUsage for Android helps analyse your phone’s storage by quickly scanning the internal memory (called a storage card by the app) or an additional microSD storage card that you may have added. It then gives a visual representation of how much space is taken up and is invaluable for anybody running low on memory by identifying which apps and files are gobbling up the most storage. Layered boxes are shown that are proportional to the amount of space taken up by each app, its data and cached memory (see images below). The boxes tell you their size and are “pinchable” just like zooming in on photos so that you can see more detail. You can also review and delete individual files such as music, documents, pictures & videos. It’s a lot more informative than Android’s Storage option and if you have Dumpster installed (see opposite column), you don’t have to worry about deleting anything by mistake.
BORED yet? Watched all of the videos on youtube yet?? Get yourself over to TED.com TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world. Go to TED.com and start yourself off with a look at Ken Robinson’s brilliant talk about whether schools kill creativity. It’s the most popular talk on the site with over 44 million views (and over 6.5 million on youtube)! Ken is from Liverpool and his brother Neil spent a couple of years with Everton in the 70s before moving on to Swansea. His talk will make you laugh and give you something to think about before you move on to watch experts such as Steven Hawkins, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Julian Assange & many more. “TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. On TED.com, we're building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED & TEDx events around the world, all year long”

This issue’s cover features two old pictures. Thank you to
Dave Davis who has given us permission to use the picture of Little Sutton from his blog neitshade4.wordpress.com Dave used software to add colour to the original black and white picture that was taken in 1934 and then more software to morph the two pictures together (shown on his blog). On the left of the picture is what is now Leung’s and on the right is the old police station, Harnott House which is where Red Lion Car Sales is based. The original Red Lion situated in the middle of what is now the A41 was replaced by the newer, current Olde Red Lion which was built behind it. Apparently the new Olde Red Lion opened the day after the original old one closed down and the original one was later demolished. See Dave’s blog for more old local pictures. The second picture is taken from DVD extras featuring the premiere of Charlie Chaplin's 1928 silent film The Circus at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Holywood. A woman walks by in the background talking into what appears to be a mobile phone. George Clarke, a filmmaker from Belfast, posted the video to YouTube in 2010 and it has since received millions of hits with people speculating that the woman was a time traveller. People have attempted to debunk the theory by saying she was using an early hearing aid type device but if so then who was she talking to as she seems to be alone? Have a look on LittleSutton.com and see what you think. More importantly how much time will you lose before inevitably watching cat and cucumber videos?? ....and below is another old picture. Do you recognise where it is? Send answers on a postcard - or maybe just send an email to info@LittleSutton.com There aren’t any prizes, we just want to test that our email is working! Maybe it was the precursor to Google Street View?
The right hand side of the picture is after we ran it through the website fotor.com to enhance it. The original is a screen shot from a film that was made in 1957 called “The Departure of Her Majesty the Queen from Ledsham Station”. It’s an amazing bit of footage taken from a car driving between Hooton and where the old Ledsham Station used to be, next to what is now The Yeoman pub (seen in the film as The Station Hotel). Have a look at LittleSutton.com to see the film. It really does show the area in a way that’s hard to imagine unless you were around at the time. Leave us some comments at our website to tell us what you think or to share your own memories.
The Microsoft Garage continues churning out interesting app projects for mobile devices, among them, Word Flow, an iOS keyboard alternative designed to work with one-handed, thumb-swiping typing while on the go. Word Flow displays the keyboard in a radial arc, allowing you to more easily swipe with thumb to the right keys without having to go through painful contortions. In addition, the app comes with the usual features of a good mobile keyboard such as a recommendation and autocorrect engine, and neat extras like customizable backgrounds.

Right then, now are you bored after watching all of the videos on TED.com? Then you’re ready for the next challenge - answer all of the questions on Quora.com! What is the difference between intelligence and common sense? Is it good to be somewhat selfish? How do astronauts eat during a spacewalk? What would you do if you were immortal? If you don’t want to answer the questions then maybe you’ve got one you’d like to ask - and get an answer from somebody who knows what they’re talking about rather than you just Googling aimlessly. Why does Quora exist? “Quora’s mission is to share and grow the world’s knowledge. A vast amount of the knowledge that would be valuable to many people is currently only available to a few — either locked in people’s heads, or only accessible to select groups. We want to connect the people who have knowledge to the people who need it, to bring together people with different perspectives so they can understand each other better, and to empower everyone to share their knowledge for the benefit of the rest of the world.” “Gather Around a Question - The heart of Quora is questions — questions that affect the world, questions that explain recent world events, questions that guide important life decisions, and questions that provide insights into why other people think differently. Quora is a place where you can ask questions you care about and get answers that are amazing.” “Quora has only one version of each question. It doesn’t have a left wing version, a right wing version, a western version, and an eastern version. Quora brings together people from different worlds to answer the same question, in the same place — and to learn from each other. We want Quora to be the place to voice your opinion because Quora is where the debate is happening. We want the Quora answer to be the definitive answer for everybody forever.”

PEACE OF MIND Many small businesses do not have the resources to manage their own internal I.T. department, but neither do they have any support in place for their staff or for when the inevitable happens… downtime
REDUCE YOUR STRESS – HAVE YOU CONSIDERED OUTSOURCING YOUR I.T. REQUIREMENTS? It is understandable that the business owner(s) may not see the value or realise the importance of having a support contract in place, especially if everything is currently in working order. However the issue with hardware or software failure is that it has an immediate and negative impact upon your business. How would your staff continue to make your business profitable if their PC or application has stopped responding, or the server has failed and all staff are at a standstill?
