Magazines Editor The last few months have been difficult for all of us, but it’s important we all stay positive. Many retail businesses need our help and support by shopping locally to keep the economy going. I talk to two businesses, which, despite their own challenges, are holding their own. Blackpool Enterprise Zone a multi-million-pound scheme that is leading the way. Over its 25-year life span it will transform the Blackpool and the Fylde Coast’s economic base with over £300 million of private investment and the creation of 5,000 jobs supported by new infrastructure. During the lockdown period, many people turned to home improvements, choosing to spend their holiday funds on making their homes functional as well as beautiful. I talk to Belarus born interior designer and mum of two Alisa Bowen on how her journey brought her to set up her interior design business in the centre of Preston. While the weather has been fantastic this year, many have flocked to beaches down south to enjoy the sunshine. But instead of travelling afar, as well as shopping local, why not eat and stay local. There are some great Lancashire pubs and inns where you can enjoy an overnight stay after a day exploring. By staying local, you will be surprised at what you see on your doorstep that you hadn’t seen before. It’s National Baking Week in October and an excuse to get baking. Britain’s fascination with baking and cooking has been growing year on year and especially with TV shows such as The Great British Bake Off proving immensely popular, it’s an opportunity to give it a go yourself. So, sit back with a cup of tea and your home-made cake and enjoy our magazine. Tracy Hargreaves Editor

Verified Customer Feedback
A Winning Design for a Beautiful Barn Kitchen Joanne and John approached several kitchen companies for designs for their dream kitchen. After living in their barn for over 20 years, they decided to renovate and open up the front of the property with a glass extension to make the most of their stunning lake views. When it came to comparing the designs from different kitchen companies there was no contest, with Designer Maxine Hutchinson’s from Kitchen Design Centre being their firm favourite. It was tailored to the space perfectly, making the most of the views and incorporating a stunning island and breakfast bar in one. Joanne was also impressed with Kitchen design Centre’s Barrowford showroom which she found to be the best showroom in the area. She also liked the wide range of customer case studies on Kitchen Design Centre’s website. As a keen cook Joanne wanted Neff in addition to her Aga and chose a Flex induction Hob, Slide and Hide Oven, Warming Drawer, Integrated Dishwasher, Compact Oven with Microwave and a Neff Coffee Machine. A stunning built in Caple larder fridge and freezer and wine cooler completed the appliances. Joanne is delighted with the finished space and the whole Kitchen Design Centre team from Maxine to Craig the fitter, “everyone is absolutely blown away when they see the new kitchen. Maxine was fantastic to work with. Her ideas and advice were invaluable and we really trusted her. Craig the fitter was fantastic too. The Quality of the product and the installation are second to none.”
Designer Maxine Hutchinson says, “This was a once in a lifetime project for the family so I was determined to get it right and do the fabulous barn and views justice. Joanne wanted an island and my design makes the most of the stunning views they have from the kitchen and ensures the whole space is welcoming, light, bright and homely.”

CREATING BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS All through high school and higher education, 32-year-old Alisa Bowen, mum of two, thought she would have a career in medicine, until she took a year out and discovered that art and design were her true passions. Photography: Fish2Commercial.co.uk
A
lisa is originally from Belarus – born to Russian parents but grew up on the sunny Island of Cyprus. Her family moved residence frequently, allowing Alisa to see many different places, from apartments, bungalows, houses – and even a yacht. Alisa saw every new home as a blank canvas and enjoyed the experience of giving each place new character, adding personality through design and bringing out the best in any space. This experience kindled Alisa’s passion for interior design. Prior to pursuing studies in medicine, Alisa completed a gap year in the romantic city of Larnaca in Cyprus where she immersed herself in fine art painting and understanding colour. Realising her love for design, she went on to study interior design in Cyprus while she gained valuable experience working in an interior design company designing summer villas and luxury offices.
In 2010, Alisa moved to the UK where she attended the University of Central Lancashire to complete an Undergraduate Degree in Interior Design. Alisa, who currently lives in Penwortham said: “Having had an English education in Cyprus, I knew I wanted to come to the UK to complete my studies and be inspired by this country’s rich and diverse creative design culture.” It was also at UCLan where she met her husband Jonathan, who was studying Product Design in the neighbouring classroom. After becoming engaged during their studies, they planned their wedding abroad whilst Alisa was completing her final year and Jonathan his Masters. On the day Alisa handed in her final portfolio they travelled to Cyprus and were married a week later. After graduating in 2012, it was a challenging year to find work in creative industries. Alisa and Jonathan had always dreamt about having their own company and decided to
use this opportunity instead to set up their own design firm. However, Alisa was also faced with the difficultly of obtaining a marriage visa for the UK as the laws had changed drastically. It took two years for her marriage visa to be granted which meant she wasn’t allowed to trade as a director of her business until it was approved. Alisa used this time to build a strong foundation for the business, taking courses and learning all about running a successful business. In 2014, Inside Studio began officially trading, with some of the first clients, to name a few, being a private developer, a listed barn conversion, and the renovation and extension of a large 1930s detached house. In 2016, Inside Studio won the Preston Guild Merchant Award, receiving a grant to help set up commercial premises in the City Centre. Inside Studio renovated a creative studio in a listed building on Lune Street, in the heart of Preston.
I KNEW I WANTED TO COME TO THE UK TO COMPLETE MY STUDIES AND BE INSPIRED BY THIS COUNTRY’S RICH AND DIVERSE CREATIVE DESIGN CULTURE In 2018, Inside Studio’s team expanded further, and the company relocated to a new studio space just off Winckley Square, allowing further growth. The new office space, located in a converted, character-rich Coach House, offering a large boardroom for client presentations, a creative working environment, and two large storage facilities to aid with procurement and project management and installations. Inside Studio now specialises in luxury residential and boutique commercial projects, working with private individuals and large property developers, as well as offering a bespoke art service through its sister company ‘Inside Gallery’. Alisa ensures every project is met with a personal approach. “Creating a unique bespoke service for every client is at the heart of what we do. We take the client on a journey to create beautiful, elegant, comfortable, practical and timeless interiors, individually tailored to each client.” With no trade shows taking place this year, where does Alisa get her inspiration from? “It has been very different this year, but we have really seen the design industry come together and support each other. Suppliers have been very good at providing information
localfocus and samples, and online platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram and Houzz are brilliant for inspiration and latest trends. While many companies have struggled during the pandemic, has interior design remained in high demand? “Many people are spending their holiday funds on their homes instead, and they are seeing the importance of having homes that are functional as well as beautiful. At the beginning of lockdown we saw trades and commercial projects take a temporary break, but all projects are now back up and running, and we are working on new design schemes as well as ongoing work on sites.”
CREATING A UNIQUE BESPOKE SERVICE FOR EVERY CLIENT IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO So, what are the interior trends for the autumn/winter season? “We are loving introducing deep tones of colours to schemes, such as burgundy, plum, and dark greens. These colours add richness and warmth, perfect for the colder months. We are turning towards metals such as bronze and black, which add interest and contrast, and we are also seeing a lot of focus on comfort, which is added by using cosy fabrics such as Boucle and wool.” Has the pandemic affected how we design our homes? “It’s made us look at our homes from a different perspective. We are no longer focusing on how the house works for entertaining guests, but how it serves us on a daily basis. The focus is on making it feel a place of safety and comfort.” When should an interior design come on board of a project? “Hiring an interior designer is something you should strive to do at the beginning of a project.” Alisa advises. “Early planning with an interior designer helps to eliminate numerous revisions down the line, reach the final result quicker and ultimately save costs. We work on full project renovations, alongside the architect and the contractor, starting from the early stages of space layout planning, lighting and bathroom design, through to all the details of the finishing touches. It helps to plan all the interior finishes and costs, to ensure the budget will allow to complete the project. n insidestudio.co.uk

homesinsideout To complement the Timepiece wallpaper design, Graham & Brown has announced its Colour of the Year 2021: Epoch. A directional shade of plum, Epoch pinpoints the richest purple tone in the Timepiece wallpaper and amplifies it, channelling the regality and luxury associated with the shade. A calming, cocooning tone, Epoch echoes a wider interiors trends which looks to create restful spaces for healthier, happier homes.
EXPERT FUSION Each year leading wallpaper and paint specialist Graham & Brown announces its Wallpaper of the Year and Colour of the Year
L
aunching the 2021 collection from its design headquarters in Blackburn in a globally-streamed digital showcase, Graham & Brown presents Wallpaper of the Year: Timepiece and Colour of the Year: Epoch, an expert fusion of archive material and contemporary components. Full of movement, colour, and exuberance, the Graham & Brown Wallpaper of the Year marks the start of the 75th Anniversary celebrations of the brand which will run throughout 2021. Piecing together fragments of the Graham & Brown archive, Timepiece is an amalgamation of prints dating from 1946 to the present day.
One of the archive patterns referenced in Timepiece is ‘Original’ the very first wallpaper produced at the Graham & Brown Blackburn factory. The Art Deco structure of the pattern forms the geometric framework and layers of floral designs are then woven into this architecture. In addition to the Amethyst colourway, Timepiece is also available in Moonstone and Midnight palettes and for the first time ever the design can also be produced as a made-to-measure bespoke mural highlighting just how far wall covering production has developed from the fixed repeat surface print machines of 1946. The Wallpaper of the Year and Colour of the Year are shining examples of the Graham & Brown perfectly partnered paint and wallpaper offering. Each wallpaper in the extensive Graham & Brown collection is mirrored by a precisely matched hero paint colour, and three co-ordinating hues for a complementary full room solution. “A great deal of craftsmanship goes into the making of each archive artwork and we believe that is something to be cherished and celebrated, to be able to breathe new life into this material and let it have a new place within our history is something we love to do,” explains Maryanne Cartwright, Design Studio Manager at Graham & Brown.
It is a proud, luxurious tone that can shape dramatic, high-impact interiors, but can also be pared back for those that favour more subdued, soothing schemes. Abby Hesketh, Product Manager and Paint & Colour Specialist at Graham & Brown has shared her expert tips for styling the Graham & Brown Colour of the Year: “Tonal pairings are a great way to make use of rich, expressive shades whilst still keeping things fairly safe. Epoch works brilliantly when used as a feature wall partnered with lighter hues.
“A trend we’ve noticed gathering momentum is pale walls paired with skirting boards and doors painted in a darker shade. This is a great way to highlight the architectural features of a room and adds a cosy element.” n

T
ucked away in a traditional mill building in Preston, is the country’s most successful and long-established reupholstery and soft furnishings specialist. A fourthgeneration family business, Plumbs is the UK leader in tailoring bespoke covers for sofas and suites, and in reupholstering treasured items of family furniture. Earlier this year, Plumbs refurbished their showroom at Brookhouse Mill, near the city centre. Here, customers can see sofas and chairs which have been covered using their three trademark cover styles – Easifit, Designer and the premium Traditional. There are subtle differences between the three styles, but each can be used to transform furniture pieces which have begun to look worn or no longer match new décor.
There are exciting developments afoot at a Lancashire company known for its quality craftsmanship and excellent service. Photography: Roger Moore In addition to the different cover styles, there are hundreds of fabrics available – from leading textile houses like Warwick,
EVERYTHING IN THE MARKETPLACE IS OF THE PREMIUM QUALITY YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM PLUMBS, BUT AT CLEARANCE PRICES Bill Beaumont, Ross, Roma and Sanderson – so whatever your style or colour scheme there will be one that’s just right.
“Being in an old mill, the showroom is lovely and spacious, so people feel comfortable coming here,” says Emma Singleton, Business Development Manager and great-granddaughter of the couple who started the company 60 years ago. “That’s particularly important just now with most people still preferring to socially distance whilst shopping.” With changes to customer behaviour in mind, the Plumbs team were extremely creative both during lockdown and in the weeks since, and have recently launched two new, exciting services which are perfectly

suited to current times. The first development is the Plumbs Marketplace website, a new online shop which enables customers to browse and purchase items without visiting the showroom. It offers soft furnishings such as ready-made curtains and scatter cushions, as well as a range of fabrics for curtains and upholstery, from designer names by the metre to ready-cut roll ends. “It’s like a virtual factory shop,” explains Emma. “Everything in the Marketplace is of the premium quality you would expect from Plumbs, but at clearance prices, and it’s perfect in the current climate with many people, for now, preferring to shop online.” The second, new, web-based service is called Cover My Furniture and is designed especially for customers who already have loose covers on their furniture. With this new service, customers can browse the website and choose a shortlist of fabrics, for which they will be sent samples. They then send in their loose covers which
will be remade to the exact size in their new, selected fabric. To find out more, you can visit the dedicated website www.covermyfurniture.com.
WE ARE INTERIOR DESIGN SPECIALISTS SO WE CAN OFFER A COMPLETE SOFT FURNISHINGS DESIGN SERVICE, TO RESTYLE YOUR WHOLE ROOM, NOT JUST YOUR FURNITURE For those who prefer a face-to-face service, Plumbs has consultants across the country and, every year, thousands of satisfied UK customers have their favourite and treasured pieces of furniture transformed by Plumbs’ skilled cover-making and reupholstery experts. “We are interior design specialists so we can offer a complete soft furnishings design service, to restyle your whole room, not just your furniture,” says Emma.

“We’re always here in the showroom to offer advice but now offer web-based services too.” With holidays on hold and people spending more time in their houses, it seems many are choosing to make improvements at home. As Emma laughingly puts it, people are saying: “It’s no to cruises, but yes to covers!” n

TOP HOME SALE TIPS rooms as walk-in-wardrobes or dressingrooms instead.
Interior design experts reveal the simple decor updates that will sell your home faster
Similarly, if you’ve converted a bedroom into an office space keep it clear of papers as this can detract from the quality of the room.
R
eports show that homes which are ‘staged’ with the likes of fresh flowers and freshly baked bread, before viewings spend 90 per cent less time on the market. Interior experts at LuxDeco have revealed these simple tips to follow to help sell your home and wow prospective buyers:
MAKING THESE SMALL DECOR UPDATES ARE REALLY SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP SELL YOUR HOME WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK WITH A TOTAL REVAMP
A treat for the senses
First impressions count
From the exterior to the entrance hall you want to make the best first impression with prospective buyers. People do judge a book by its cover, so spruce up any tired looking front doors and any untidy or disarrayed gardens to add curb appeal. For a welcoming entrance hall, clear away shoes or bulky coats to maximise the space and add a pop of colour by adding fresh flowers to any sideboards or console tables.
Does this spark joy?
When it comes to kitchens, it’s time to take Marie Kondo’s advice: “Put nothing on the counters or around the sink and stove top.” Empty countertops will make your kitchen look much cleaner and more appealing to buyers.
Don’t air your dirty laundry
While homes are meant to be functional, pack away the laundry basket, clothes horse and the ironing you’ve been putting off for weeks.
Showcase the space
Keep in mind that prospective buyers might not use the rooms in the same way as you so it’s important to showcase the space rather than the functionality. If you have children, tidy up any toys or mess in their rooms in order to maximise the area. Your buyers might use these
When you’re preparing your home for a viewing make sure you consider all five senses: Sight – make sure the house is tidy, clear of any clutter and dust free. Hearing – if you know that there is building work or an event happening nearby, try and arrange viewings on a different day or time to ensure potential buyers experience the house on a ‘typical’ day.

Taste – it might be a cliché that the smell of freshly baked bread or roasted coffee increases the likelihood of getting an offer on your house, but adding homely smells to the kitchen could also increase a buyer’s appetite for your property. Smell – it’s not just the kitchen you need to consider, it’s important to make sure the rest of the home is smelling fresh too. Avoid being heavy-handed on the cleaning products as it could give it a clinical feel. Instead, rely on diffusers or light a scented candle just before a viewing to give a more subtle fragrance.
MINIMALISE AND NEUTRALISE SPACE, REMOVE ANY PERSONAL TOUCHES AND AIM TO EDIT DOWN TRINKETS AND PHOTOS TO GIVE MORE OF A BLANK CANVAS FEEL Touch – this ties back to the cleanliness of your home so make sure the counter surfaces and doors are clean. Linda Holmes, Interiors Director at LuxDeco Studio says: “For many people, painting their house top to toe in a neutral, inoffensive colour may seem like the best way to entice potential buyers, but sellers don’t have to resort to such measures or expense to do that. “Making these small decor updates are really simple ways to help sell your home without breaking the bank with a total revamp.” Cheryl Eisen, President and founder of luxury design and real estate marketing firm, Interior Marketing Group adds: “A clean house is more important than
anything to potential home buyers. Take time to switch dull light bulbs, vacuum the floors, remove any rubbish and remember to make the beds – a clean home is so much more inviting for prospective buyers and more likely to leave a lasting impression. “Minimalise and neutralise space, remove any personal touches and aim to edit down trinkets and photos to around a third of what you started with to give more of a blank canvas feel. Finally remember to plump up any cushions and add some fresh flowers. “It’s all in the little details, but they can make a big difference! We’ve found that our listings that had been staged sold 79 per cent faster than average and that 45 per cent of them sold above the asking price.” n

MOODY BLUES Upholstered chairs in shades of blue velvet are the perfect foil for a dining table

dd a pop of colour to your dining room with La Residence Interiors’ luxuriously upholstered Hamilton dining chairs in different shades of blue. “We’ve extended the Hamilton collection, adding to the oatmeal and grey linen fabrics to include a lovely pale blue velvet and a royal blue velvet, which have just arrived. “The chairs look amazing in the new colours and have really given our Surrey showroom a lift,” says Sarah Cook, cofounder of the online luxury furniture and home accessories retailer. The blue dining chairs look particularly striking partnered with La Residence
Interiors’ collection of round and rectangular weathered oak dining tables, the sumptuous softness of the velvet in striking blues contrasting beautifully with the natural grain of the light oak. “You could either keep to one shade of blue for your dining chairs or, if you can’t decide which you like best, mix the two – perhaps opting for royal blues either side of the table and a pale blue at each end,” advises Sarah. And if you’re getting the feeling for blue – after all, Classic Blue happens to be the Pantone Colour of the Year – why not take a look at LRI’s best-selling Petit Royale upholstered ottoman coffee tables, which are now available in the same blue velvets. n Hamilton dining chairs £235 Petit Royale upholstered ottomans £495

his autumn/winter, fine artist, colour expert and paint legend Annie Sloan launches six new stencils in a mix of A4 and A3 sizes, inspired by places close to Annie’s heart, both near and far from home. Pictured is the Meadow Flowers stencil featuring the delicate blooms of cow parsley,
daisies, fritillaries and clover with wild grasses, reminiscent of the blossoms which brighten Port Meadow in Annie’s home of Oxford each summer. “Stencils are the best addition to your Chalk Paint™ toolkit. Whatever your level of expertise, the creative possibilities are endless,” explains Annie. “They can be reused over and over again because they’re washable – in different colourways, on furniture or walls, overlapping or with different elements from each design. YOUR GARDEN ESCAPE

amuel Hill is the sixth generation to join the Croft family business, which dates back to 1874, now launching Croft Pods to offer bespoke garden buildings. He was inspired to launch Croft Pods after experiencing all the benefits of a separate home office while completing his dissertation during lockdown. Samuel, tell us about Croft Pods? We offer completely bespoke, customisable garden pods to provide the perfect extra space to meet your needs. They can be built to any size, with any door options from bi-folding to sliding doors, and for any purpose from home office to beauty parlour. We have the heritage and quality of Croft Complete Homes behind us, which has been providing double-glazed windows, doors, conservatories and orangeries for 25 years. This means we have the same suppliers, fitters and the Croft 10-year guarantee to rely on. What sort of garden pods are the most popular? Croft Pods will make fantastic home offices, and that mentality of being able to leave the house and go somewhere you can focus is priceless. During lockdown I felt so lucky
Sarah Varley speaks to Croft Pods director Samuel Hill about the exciting new addition to the Croft Group, offering a luxury, bespoke home office or studio in your garden. Photography: Paul Currie
IT CAN PROVE MUCH MORE COST-EFFECTIVE THAN RENTING A SPACE AND OF COURSE THE COMMUTE IS UNBEATABLE! to have a home office at the bottom of the garden to retreat to, and with the massive rise in working from home, that would be the most popular pod. It allows you to work from home but in a space away from
the kids, the dogs, the chores and any other distractions. However, our pods are extremely versatile and we have found demand for garden pods to fulfil many roles. One customer wanted a pod as a library to sit and read in total peace surrounded by their books. Another family wanted a pod as a music room, where they could go and practice their musical instruments and listen to music. We have also had an enquiry for a pool room-style pod with a jacuzzi. We have found there’s a real demand for garden pods as commercial office space or business premises, providing a base for small teams to work in and to meet clients, particularly for start-ups in the tech industry, or as treatment rooms for the health and beauty industry. It can prove much more cost-effective than renting a space and of course the commute is unbeatable!
homesinsideout
What sort of garden space do I need? We are able to offer completely bespoke, customisable pods in whatever size you need, down to the exact millimetre, to fit into any space. Our ‘screw pile’ foundation system means that your pod can be fitted almost anywhere, including sloping gardens and even hillsides, without the need for digging out or a concrete base. This means there is no permanent damage to the existing environment and should you move house in the future, your pod can be removed and relocated as easily as it went in. We can also offer a garden design service to help ensure your pod fits beautifully into your garden landscape.
WE CAN BUILD A TO-SCALE CAD MODEL OF YOUR PERFECT POD AND SUPERIMPOSE IT ON YOUR GARDEN What eco-credentials do Croft Pods have? We are proud that most of our materials are recycled and the windows are all A+ rated for energy efficiency. The screw pile system is more environmentally friendly than a concrete base. We can also incorporate biodiverse design features such as sedum or wildflower living roof systems and living walls which are both beautiful and great for the environment.
What is the process for designing a bespoke Croft Pod? Our design team has put together five initial designs to get you started so you can choose the style you like best and then tailor it to the size and view you want and how you will use your pod. We can build a to-scale CAD model of your perfect pod and superimpose it on your garden to bring your vision to life. Croft Pods has all the social distancing safety measures in place for the showroom and for home visits. Get in touch for a free quotation so they can get designing your dream pod! n

MAKING A GRAND ENTRANCE… As it looks like an autumn or winter break may not be possible this year, how about using the time to transform your home instead? Meena McDonald finds out more. Photography: Roger Moore
Y
ou can add a new lease of life to numerous rooms in your home, adding style and grandeur through renewing your lighting and buying new furnishings to fitting new flooring. Something as simple as a rug can completely transform a room. You can brighten a neutral and simple space with a colourful and striking rug, whether it’s stripes, a geometric pattern, abstract designs or a beautiful intricate floral pattern. Or you can tone down a vibrant room with a neutral textured rug which can add depth, style and character. We have a considerable choice of rugs from renowned manufacturers such as Mastercraft rugs, Jacaranda and Ulster Carpets. You can also use Alternative Flooring’s ‘Make me a rug’ service where
you can create a unique style to suit your home. There are thousands of innovative flooring and border combinations with designs that are packed with patterns, textures and colours, so there are endless possibilities. Another way to add style and creative flair to your home is to revamp your entrance hall and stairs, creating a wow factor as soon as you walk into your home. One delighted client who loves the impact the new flooring has made to their home is Jenny Cottam from Preston who recently had new flooring fitted in her entrance hall, stairs and landing as well as her living room. The original idea had been to fit out the entrance hall in carpet, but after some discussion Jenny opted for a period Amtico replica parquet wood floor in a herringbone pattern as it would prove far more practical with its exceptional durable characteristics in a busy entrance hall. For the stairs, Jenny selected Alternative Flooring’s vivid and colourful Quirky B Margo Selby Fair Isle design in the Annie colour scheme. The award-winning Quirky B patterned carpets come in contemporary geometrics, florals, paisleys and animal prints and are suitable for a range of rooms throughout your home.
39
Alternative Flooring’s Quirky B was also selected for Jenny’s living room and this time she opted for Honeycomb in Moss which has an eye-catching unique pattern. Jenny commented: “I am absolutely thrilled with the transformation to my home. The Gainsborough Flooring team were so inspirational with their ideas and I had such confidence in both their range of flooring products and their professionalism in delivering exactly what I wanted. The expert capabilities of the fitters were certainly put to the test when they had to curve the Amtico parquet wood blocks around the round bullnose of the bottom step and follow the curving walls! It was very impressive.” If you’d like to add a new dimension to your flooring, whether in a contemporary or a traditional style, come and talk to us and we’ll see how we can help you transform any space in your home. Whether you want a rug to add creative flair to a room, or your bathroom or kitchen floors refitted with our fantastic Karndean or Amtico range, or you’d like your bedrooms or living room fitted with one of our luxurious carpets, we’ll be able to help you achieve exactly what you want. n Contact us on 01772 250682 or email: vicky@gainsboroughflooring.co.uk You can find out more about our range of flooring by visiting our website at: gainsboroughflooring.co.uk

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH YOUR GUEST BEDROOM! With Christmas on the horizon, it’s time to think about having guests to stay and whether you have enough room to accommodate them
W
hatever the size of your home, assigning enough space for storage is always an issue. Finding space for overnight guests is no mean feat either, and with Christmas registering on the radar, you might be starting to think about where your guests will be sleeping, and the preparations you’ll need to make for a comfy and welcoming guest bedroom. Christmas is a busy time and your guests will appreciate a bedroom which offers
space to relax in, as well as somewhere to put their belongings, and, of course, to sleep. Guest bedrooms are often small or awkwardly proportioned, so creating a tidy, functional and homely environment might seem tricky at first glance, especially if the room is already crammed with boxes, old furniture and items which haven’t quite made it to the charity shop. Whilst a declutter is an essential part of the process, fitted furniture is an excellent option for a stylish and flexible guest bedroom. Maximising all the space on offer and tightly hugging the contours of the room, choosing a fitted bedroom opens up a whole host of storage solutions, thus ensuring the space is suitable for whoever is using it. Guests will need wardrobe space for their clothing and a drawer or cupboard for their personal items, but you may also require a certain amount of space for your own possessions. Bespoke fitted furniture will ensure the type of storage perfectly meets the requirements of both you and any potential guests. You could even incorporate a home office area for your own use, as
well as for that of your guest should they need to open up their laptop. A foldaway bed is the ideal solution if you wish to use the space as a multipurpose room. When you have guests, the bed can be pulled down into position for sleeping. Once your guests have left, the bed can be folded away against the wall, disguised as a wardrobe front for a sleek and streamline effect, to allow for a more spacious working environment.
At Hartleys, we are experts in designing all types of bedrooms, tailored specifically to our clients’ individual needs. Our team of talented designers and fitters can visit your home to work out the best design plan for you, embracing any awkward spaces or architectural features. n

here’s a buzz about bathrooms this autumn as Preston Plumbing Supplies welcomes customers to its new Brookfield Street showroom. The spacious and gleaming new store, filled with natural light, is the perfect backdrop for inspiring displays in both cutting edge and traditional styles by leading names in bathroom innovation. Preston Plumbing Supplies has been a locally renowned source of design and installation advice for more than 30 years, and the new showroom, run by the same trusted team, reinforces these credentials. Easily accessible with free customer parking, the striking new PPS logo sets the tone for the forward-thinking ideas inside. A chic industrial feel has been designed for the interior, allowing exposed brickwork and pipes, in the style of a trendy New York loft, to create a stage for sleek, modern designs such as the minimalist free-standing baths from Waters Baths of Ashbourne. For more traditional tastes, further inspiration can be found in the thoughtfully

PRESTON PLUMBING SUPPLIES IS KEEN TO PROVE THAT GOOD DESIGN AND LAYOUT NEEDN’T COST THE EARTH There are plenty of new ideas to explore at Preston Plumbing Supplies, but one thing that will never change is its dedication to great service. The firm has played a large
part in many customers’ lives over the past three decades, and has helped them equip their first homes, family dwellings and cosy downsized properties. Such repeat business speaks for itself, but as social media shows, new clients are keen to post their praise for “good old-fashioned customer service”, competitive pricing and expert advice. Some customers are even sharing their stylish new bathrooms from Preston Plumbing Supplies online, setting the internet humming with bathroom envy. Aiming to be a one-stop shop for quality bathrooms, the new Brookfield Street showrooms offer exquisite finishing touches, taps and showerheads, particularly the retro-look large, round showerheads in a range of finishes from VADO, which will

make a design statement. Matt black taps and shower controls suit a modern, minimalist style, whereas its brushed gold range adds warmth to more traditional suites. Attention to detail counts. Are you aware of the impact that radiators can create in your new bathroom? The helpful team at Preston Plumbing Supplies has created a radiator wall to showcase the latest styles and shapes. Look out for striking matt black designs to add the wow factor to modern suites, an exciting choice of space-saving vertical towel warmers, or for the traditionalists, an evocative range of period-style radiators. Luxurious vanity units or fitted cupboards are a space-saving and elegant way to add storage and flair to your personal spa or
busy family bathroom. The new showroom features cabinetwork in the latest hues, including classic blue, the pantone colour of the year.

007 EDITION LAUNCHES Daniel Craig and the 007 producers collaborate on a new James Bond timepiece
T
o coincide with the 25th official James Bond film, No Time To Die, OMEGA has unveiled a new timepiece worn by 007 in the film. As well as appearing on screen, this non-limited watch has been made available in OMEGA’s current collection. The new Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition has been built with military needs in mind and was even designed with input from Daniel Craig and the 007 producers. OMEGA remained in close contact with the actor throughout the design process, referring to his special James Bond knowledge to understand the sort of features the watch might require. Craig’s influence and advice played a big role in the final result, as he explains: “When working with OMEGA, we decided that a lightweight watch would be key for a military man like 007. I also suggested some vintage touches and colour to give the watch a unique edge. The final piece looks incredible.”
The 42 mm timepiece has been crafted from Grade 2 titanium, which is used for the case and titanium mesh bracelet with its innovative adjustable buckle. This material is strong and lightweight, making it perfect for an undercover agent. To further decrease the weight, OMEGA has used ‘tropical’ brown aluminium for the dial and bezel ring. These elements have been given a classic look, thanks to the vintage Super-LumiNova, which fills the diving scale, blackened hands and indexes.
OMEGA REMAINED IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE ACTOR THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN PROCESS, REFERRING TO HIS SPECIAL JAMES BOND KNOWLEDGE On the caseback, you’ll find a series of numbers, which follow the format for genuine military-issue watches – ‘0552’ is the code-number specified for Navy personnel, with ‘923 7697’ being the number for a divers’ watch. The letter ‘A’ is a code used to signify a watch with a screw-in crown, while ‘007’ is James Bond’s iconic agent number. Finally, the number ‘62’ is the year of the very first James Bond film. The new watch is completed by a NAIAD LOCK caseback, which keeps all of the engravings in correct alignment.
Inside, it is driven by a particularly impressive movement – the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806, which has achieved the industry’s highest standards of precision, chronometric performance and magnetic resistance. The watch is available on the captivating titanium mesh bracelet, or on a striped NATO strap in dark brown, grey and beige with 007 engraved on the loop. The watches are delivered in an exclusive brown fabric pouch. n

ADVICE, SUPPORT AND LUXURY Expert hair stylist Cass Preston is expanding her specialist portfolio of services and has opened a medical hair loss clinic, writes Gail Bailey
C
ass Preston has a wealth of experience in the hairdressing industry and is using her knowledge and expertise to help those suffering the devastation that hair loss can cause. “Twelve years ago I trained with Trevor Sorbie in wig cutting,” explains Cass. “But I have noticed in recent years that clients who are experiencing hair loss are often given ill-fitting wigs, in a colour that doesn’t suit – and it can have a truly negative impact on them, at a difficult time.” This led Cass, who also owns Lusso in Whalley, to open her fabulous new studio, The Volume Clinic, based in the Ribble Valley. Here she is able to offer a bespoke one-to-one service to discuss a client’s needs and ensure they leave feeling as if they have regained their natural hair and have the confidence to face the world again. Hair loss can be for a myriad of reasons, often as a result of chemotherapy or radiotherapy during cancer treatment, alopecia, hormone treatments or it can even be genetic. Whatever the cause it is incredibly distressing for the person involved.
“At The Volume Clinic we have a wide range of wigs that are produced from either human hair or synthetic. I work with a fantastic company called My New Hair and only offer the very best products,” Cass explains. “During the consultation we discuss style, image, colour match and can then order a selection of wigs

from our suppliers in the UK and Europe, which arrive quickly. Clients are then able to spend time selecting the one they are most happy with. TIME TO GLOW AGAIN With restrictions lifted, this clinic offers a range of transforming facial and body treatments guaranteed to deliver a postlockdown glow, writes Kate Ford. Photography: Roger Moore
T
he recent lifting of restrictions on the beauty industry, enabling facials to be offered once more, came as a huge relief to Liv Hindmoor, who runs her own professional clinic, 3D Aesthetics Ltd, in Barton. Liv offers a range of face and body treatments, but her flagship treatment is the famous HIFU Facelift, a non-surgical facelift, favoured by celebrities including The Real Housewives of Cheshire, for its staggering results. Standing for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, the HIFU procedure is perfect for lifting and tightening the face and neck. Using ultrasound, the procedure targets the collagen and elastin cells and causes them to contract, which leads to the lift and tightening. Completely non-surgical, its results are visible instantly, improving over the ensuing weeks and lasting up to 18 months. “My clients absolutely love this treatment and have been desperate to come back to the clinic,” says Liv. “The results are truly outstanding. It really is a celebrity treatment without the celebrity price tag!” A recognised specialist in non-invasive treatments, Liv offers a full range of facials focusing on anti-ageing, pigmentation reduction, exfoliation, hydration and acne treatments, as well as the ultra-popular HIFU. To mark the ending of restrictions, Liv is
offering many facials at reduced prices including the HIFU at half price. Liv’s clinic also offers regular sessions for injectable treatments and fillers, delivered by an experienced, registered nurse. These include anti-wrinkle treatments, lip enhancements, cheek contouring, jaw definition, non-surgical nose jobs and treatments for under eye bags. She also offers Vitamin B12 injections, which help boost energy levels, brain function and the immune system, for just £40. Anyone interested should contact the clinic to find out when the next session will be held. Body treatments for stubborn fat removal,

inch loss, targeting of cellulite, ‘mum tums’, stretch marks and crepey skin are also extremely popular with Liv’s clients. Her high performing 3D Lipo treatments, ideal for inch loss, can work wonders with the stomach, waist, thighs, arms and ‘under the bum’ area. Liv offers free, no obligation, 30-minute consultations before designing a bespoke programme for each individual client. As you’d expect, Liv is meticulous about safety, providing sanitising stations, limiting waiting areas to one client only and disinfecting treatment areas between clients. During treatments, Liv wears full PPE of gloves, mask, visor and apron. “It’s fantastic to be able to offer my full range of treatments again,” says Liv. “Lockdown weight gain and tired, lifeless skin have become an issue for both men and women, and I am delighted to be back putting smiles on people’s faces and making them feel more confident!” n

BE CONFIDENT
IN THE SKIN YOU’RE IN EMA Skin Aesthetics Ltd founder and director Emma Pearce talks to Sarah Varley about the transformative anti-ageing results and skin confidence she achieves for her clients
A
s an aesthetic skin specialist with the most advanced training and experience, Emma specialises in rediscovering clients’ youthful looks with non-invasive, scientifically-proven technology.
Hi Emma, what are the most common skin issues you deal with? The anti-ageing skin issues I solve the most are for women in their 40’s to late 70s, most commonly feeling they have aged dramatically overnight, noticing lines, sagging and bags under their eyes which is affecting their confidence. Many clients have mentioned feeling they ‘let themselves go’ over lockdown and noticed a negative impact on their skin including more prominent fine lines and wrinkles. There is no need to put up with feeling like this. I have lots of clients who thought they had
left it too late to eliminate signs of ageing, but it is never too late. My oldest client is 85 and she looks incredible! What is the treatment you most recommend? Definitely Plasma Pen! It’s perfect for treating all these issues and regaining your skin confidence. It rebuilds and strengthens the skin’s scaffolding, restoring your skin to how it was in youthful years. This
non-invasive procedure is becoming the most pioneering anti-ageing treatment available today due to the astounding results achieved by the industry’s leading skin specialists.
Plasma Pen tightens and eliminates fine lines and wrinkles naturally by working with your skin. Experience and expertise is crucial to assuring results that exceed your expectations. I know exactly which areas to target and techniques to use to deliver exceptional results for each client. It’s virtually pain-free with minimal downtime and often only one treatment is needed. What results can we expect? Plasma Pen is so effective because it rebuilds and strengthens the skin’s fibroblasts, which we refer to as the scaffolding of the skin, and powerfully stimulates collagen

It is fantastic for tightening and erasing sagging jowls, turkey necks, marionette lines, smile and smokers’ lines around the lips, crows’ feet, puffy eyes, drooping eyelids and chest lines. I have achieved results with Plasma Pen that have been truly life-changing for my clients.
If you want to regain your youthful looks and still look like you, this is the perfect treatment. You can turn back the clock with this scientifically-proven technology and importantly delivered by a renowned experienced skin specialist. Dramatically reduce underarm sweating and odour
D
o you suffer with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), or would you just like to feel more confident that you can attend work meetings, or nights out, without worrying about sweat patches on your clothes under your arms? RejuvaMed now offers you a permanent solution to underarm sweating in just one treatment session. Our CQC registered Clitheroe health and wellness clinic is now the newest, and most northerly, miraDry centre in the UK. MiraDry treatment is simple and easy.Thermal electromagnetic energy targets and eliminates the sweat glands in your underarm area. Once those glands are eliminated, they do not grow back, giving you a long-lasting reduction in sweat and odour. Not only does miraDry remove the glands which cause sweat and odour, it also removes hair follicles in the underarm area at the same time, making it look better and feel much smoother! Prior to treatment the underarm area is numbed with a local anaesthetic by our medical director Dr Grant McKeating. A temporary tattoo is then applied to the skin, which gives a perfect guide for our aesthetician Rachael to position the miraDry handpiece. Slight suction is emitted from the

for hyperhidrosis, which need to be repeated regularly for continuous results, such as underarm Botox injections, just one miraDry treatment is typically required for permanent results. Treatment appointments generally last around 90 minutes, so you are in and out of the clinic in no time. Most patients describe the treatment as painless, with little or no downtime, and return to normal activity (such as returning to work) immediately. Exercise is typically resumed within a few days. Many patients never have to wear anti-perspirant or deodorant again! Typical UK pricing for miraDry is over £1500. However, RejuvaMed is offering this life changing treatment at an incredible introductory price of just £995, saving you over £500. We also offer interest-free finance (subject to status). n

She went to daughter Sue’s house for a few weeks before returning to her own home just before Christmas.

alerie Wilcox leads a full and active life, spending lots of time with her grandchildren and volunteering at a Blackpool drop-in centre providing meals for the homeless and people in need. So, when she found herself in pain, three years ago, she wanted to do something about it quickly before it stopped her doing the things she enjoyed. The pain was at the top of Valerie’s right leg and was affecting her ability to walk comfortably. After trying several solutions without success, she was persuaded
by her daughter, Sue, to contact Spire Fylde Coast Hospital. “Sue works at Spire and was convinced they’d be able to help,” says Valerie, 73. “Very quickly, she was able to arrange an appointment for me to see a consultant at the hospital.” Valerie’s appointment was with consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Amit Shah, in the summer of 2019, and she recalls that first consultation: “He is such a lovely man and so easy to talk to. He asked me about my lifestyle, general health and, of course, all about the considerable pain I was feeling. “He told me that as soon as I walked through the door, he was sure he knew exactly what was wrong with me.” The problem was with Valerie’s hip and, after studying her condition in detail, Mr Shah recommended a hip replacement operation, but further complications then arose because of Valerie’s diabetes. Mr Shah’s team wanted to ensure her blood sugar levels were right before he undertook the surgery. “Under his direction, my diabetes medication was adjusted, and at the same time, I changed my diet and made sure I

She is also back on the school run and has been reunited with her fellow volunteers at the drop-in centre. “I couldn’t have asked for better treatment,” she says. “Mr Shah was so attentive and meticulous, performing the surgery only when he knew I was ready. Throughout my treatment, everyone was friendly, pleasant and thoroughly professional. RELAXING RETREATS With the year we’ve had, we could all do with a break. Anxiety, stress, financial worries and health problems can all get on top of us and with restrictions on us to go abroad, people are turning to wellbeing breaks in the UK for some rest and relaxation, writes Tracy Hargreaves
I
t’s a known fact that being outside makes us feel better, whether it’s a brisk walk at lunch or a hike over mountains, but sometimes just a change of scenery also does us good. Research wellbeing breaks and there will be plenty to choose from, that involve getting back to nature. And what’s more, many will organise everything for you, from the accommodation to the itinerary. It’s a great opportunity to mix with like minded people and give your mind a chance to switch off from everyday life. You can learn new skills such as foraging, making fires, cooking on a campfire or learning to navigate your walking route.
Really get back to nature with a wilderness retreat. Spend time in the remote Welsh mountain ranges flanked by forestland or a small log cabin in Scotland where you can discover secluded beaches up and down the coast, you didn’t even know existed.
MORE THAN EVER, YOGA IS PROVING BENEFICIAL FOR BOTH THE MIND AND BODY DURING THESE DIFFICULT TIMES If that’s not your thing, the Lake District has many yoga retreats where you can be
at peace with yourself. More than ever, yoga is proving beneficial for both the mind and body during these difficult times. Set in beautiful surroundings, with days full of yoga and then relaxing with good food and company in the evening, you definitely won’t want to come home. If you prefer a bit of pampering, then a luxury spa day is ideal. Check in, book your treatments and enjoy a leisurely lunch or afternoon tea. Treat yourself to a massage, pedicure, facial or body wrap and you’ll leave feeling like a million dollars. If you want something that all the family can enjoy, then Llama trekking might just be the thing. Not only do you get to be out in the countryside, but also enjoy a therapeutic experience in the company of some very well-behaved llamas and learn some fascinating facts about them as well. It’s important we all take time out for ourselves to switch off and enjoy a work life balance and there are plenty of experiences out there to try something new. n
Imagine... A magical private wedding in the Lake District Enter through electric gates to discover this beautiful sanctuary in the Lake District. Surrounded by stunning woodland in the heart of a hundred acre estate, Gilpin Lake House is quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people – a place to forget about everything. Perfect for intimate weddings of up to 15 people, the Lake House is fully serviced with Relais & Châteaux trained staff and Michelin starred chefs, and our dedicated team balance warmth and friendliness with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences. With its own lake and pool, the house and grounds provide an inspiring and peaceful location with an abundance of natural beauty. Set on three levels with a beautiful entrance and sweeping staircase, the interiors are stylish, comfortable and warm, with a touch of home. The six sumptuous bedrooms are individually designed and furnished, with crisp white linen, exquisite fabrics, wonderful upholstery, and delicious art. The lounge is scattered with sofas, armchairs and bookcases, and the huge adjoining conservatory has floor to ceiling glass on two sides; both rooms overlook the private lake. On the lower floor the heated indoor pool and sauna lead to the lake, cedarwood hot and gardens. Elsewhere in the grounds there are kitchen gardens, a boat house, mature woodland, moorland, grassland, wild ponds, and a lovely walk with 360° panoramic views of the Lake District, including Coniston and the Llangdales in the distance.

CHARITY F O C U S Live Preston & Fylde takes a look at the many and varied charity projects that are taking place in towns and villages across the region If you have any charity news please contact: tracy.hargreaves@live-magazines.co.uk
EPIC CHALLENGE A charity cycle challenge will take Lynn Scholes and Jane England on a 355km route through Italy, taking in the beautiful countryside and Lake Garda An amazing endurance challenge cycling from Milan to Venice is being embarked upon by two Lancashire ladies.
Training started for both in early August with a weekly average of 100km being clocked up around their busy lives.
Jane England and Lynn Scholes will set off from Milan in a bid to support three cancer charities, cycling 355km, from 13th to the 17th May 2021, completing over 100km on their bikes each day!
Preparation for this incredible challenge currently consists of training at YourGym in Lytham for Jane and Harris Fitness in Clitheroe for Lynn. Both are building up strength and flexibility ready for the ride and this is complemented by spin classes and road riding.
Jane and Lynn have signed up to the epic challenge as they have both experienced first hand the pain that cancer causes. What they have set out to do is even more amazing taking into account that prior to August 2020 neither of them had even cycled regularly. Jane has seen family and loved ones going through cancer treatment and knows how important charities are in the quest for new, less harmful treatments, a future cure and providing support and care for people post-cancer diagnosis. Lynn is herself a survivor of ovarian cancer and understands the trauma attached to a cancer diagnosis and just how vital continued research is into all types of cancer. The route they will take through Italy will take in beautiful towns, cities and countryside with the highlight being Lake Garda on the second leg of the trip. The starting point in the centre of Milan will no doubt prove challenging with the volume of traffic, so both ladies are working hard to train on public roads to become acclimatised with the terrain they will face. Throughout the ride, they will be supported by the Women V Cancer support team and will stay in local hostels at each rest point before reaching their destination in beautiful Venice.
The expert staff at the gyms are supporting with detailed training plans that will build up fitness levels in time for the May starting point. This level of fitness, specific to cycling, can’t be underestimated for the participants who have only ever cycled for pleasure before signing up for the event. Both women are funding the event themselves, with all money they raise going directly to: - Breast Cancer Now - Ovarian Cancer Action - Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust Each of these charities is doing superb work investing in research to save the lives of thousands of women and the challenge that Jane and Lynn are undertaking will help support their work.
If anyone feels able to support Jane and Lynn, all donations will be shared, please visit: JustGiving.com/fundraising/Lynn-Scholes2021

ith a diverse career background, Nigel Hanson has worked as a civil engineer in the UK, as a project manager for British Leyland, he has also worked for BAe in Saudi Arabia and as a general manager of a desalination plant company, and finally, as Blackpool’s first town centre manager. Educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Blackburn, he recalls: “While I was quite creative at school and always loved writing from an early age, I went down the science route for my career.” After retiring 13 years ago, he decided it was time to indulge his love of writing and developed a totally new career, that of novelist, and he has recently had his first book published, Murder Mapped Out, the first in a series of novels called The Wisstingham Mysteries. “When I was working, I never had the time to write so on retirement, I embarked on a Writers Bureau course in creative writing and that got me started. I wrote numerous short stories and then started to develop an idea for a book,” explains Nigel, who now lives in Lytham.

MURDER MYSTERY… “To be honest it started out as a totally different story to what it is now. As I developed it, the storyline and characters turned more serious and it became a murder mystery based on the fictional village of
Wisstingham with its hall and estate.” Over a decade, Nigel built up a cast of interesting characters, making copious notes to make the cast and plot consistent: “I just picked out of life people with

“It’s been a big challenge, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and have really endeavoured to make the plot as watertight as possible so readers hopefully can’t pick holes in it. “It’s been very therapeutic as I can be thinking about the plot and characters while doing other things. Once it was written, the big difficulty was editing it. I must have read it at least 10 times before and during the professional edit.” Once he and his editor were happy with the script they found a publisher and the book was launched: “My family, especially my wife Pat, has been very supportive, and those that have read Murder Mapped Out have said they really enjoyed it. “It’s a total departure from what I’d been doing but it’s been great fun and I’ve now completed the first draft of the second novel which is due out in 2021. “My book writing journey has been an incredible experience, instructive, at times frustrating and yet so very enjoyable!” n

the ending is such that things hang in the balance, leading on to the second book!” Nigel, who has just returned from the Languedoc region of France, where he and his wife have a small town house set within the historic, cobbled streets, has based the second novel partly in France. “It takes some of the cast and the reader to France,” explains Nigel, who admits to having thoroughly enjoyed penning the novels.
Murder Mapped Out
On his stroll through the estate grounds, his beagle alongside him, Selwyn sniffed the air and looked about with a rapturous smile. ‘A good wife, if a bit spirited, a gorgeous son, good staff, all this – and, of course, you.’ He stooped to pat the dog. ‘What more could a chap ask for?’ Welcome to idyllic Wisstingham Hall and the world of Commander Selwyn Fitzgerald, where all is not quite as it seems… Selwyn’s hopes that he will finally discover his family’s long-lost treasure are plunged into disarray with the discovery of an old map and deed. Little does he realise that this find will expose him and others to villainy, betrayal – and murder. Whilst the unwitting Selwyn battles with tragic personal loss – and the local council – dark forces plot his downfall. As the body count increases, can the commander trust his greedy son, his temperamental estate manager and his protégé, Sebastian? Or, as he fears, is he entirely alone in trying to escape a dangerous web of intrigue and even death?

LET’S TAKE A RIDE…
T
his route follows a well signposted route along quiet country lanes, as you navigate from the old market town of Garstang to Beacon Fell Country Park, situated within the picturesque Forest of Bowland. Starting on Garstang High Street, head south, keeping left at the Royal Oak Hotel and at the mini roundabout take the first exit to head over the River Wyre and out of town. After approximately two miles you will reach the A6 Preston/ Lancaster Road. Turn left and follow the cycle lane until you reach the petrol station. Turn left here (signposted Inglewhite). Cross over the motorway and where the road forks, turn right
and continue following the road as it undulates towards Inglewhite. At the T-junction with Bilsborrow Lane, take the left turn, which is signposted for Longridge/ Inglewhite and continue into Inglewhite. Turn left at the crossroads in Inglewhite Village, which is signposted for Beacon Fell and feel the road start to climb gently. Follow the road until the T-Junction with Stanalee Lane and Bleasdale Road. Turn right, then next right onto Crumblehome Road, the road
descends before commencing a 1km climb with a maximum gradient of 15 per cent. The worst stretch of the climb comes after the right-hand turn, marked by a cluster of houses on the corner and ends at the gateposts 50 metres from the top. When you reach top the hard work isn’t over, the road sweeps to the left and you are faced with another 15 per cent gradient ramp before you drop into Beacon Fell Visitor’s centre and more importantly a great café stop. Beacon Fell is surrounded by roads and trails if you feel like extending your ride. When you are ready to head back, return the way you came or take the road out past the visitors centre until you see the left-hand turn signposted for Garstang/Preston
and follow the signposts back to Inglewhite. From here you can roll all the way back to Garstang safe in the knowledge that the hard work has been done.

LIFE CHANGES AND SO SHOULD YOUR WILL
T
If there is one thing that this year, more than any other, has taught us it’s that life as we know it can change in an instant, reflects Ashley Marshall, Private Client Solicitor at Farleys
his time last year, no one had really heard of social distancing and a global pandemic was something we’d only seen in history books and through cinema screens. One minute we were out socialising with friends and the next we were locked down in our homes. Now, we’ve adapted our lives to protect ourselves and our loved ones and some aspects of our lives are unrecognisable. Sometimes life moves so fast we forget to take stock of things. Ensuring our loved ones are sufficiently provided for when we are not around anymore is as important in the long-term as washing our hands is in the short-term. If the events of the last few months have resulted in you making any large changes in your life, buying or selling a property, filing for divorce, getting engaged or making any significant purchases, it might be wise for you to review your Will, if you have one, and making changes accordingly. With everything that’s been going on, it’s understandable that the last thing to cross your mind will have been to make or update your Will but now is the time to think about this.
Since lockdown in March, Farleys’ Private Client Team have been working hard to assist clients in drafting new Wills and amending pre-existing ones. Some clients had seen a significant change in family circumstances since their last Will was drafted, such as a marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or death of a main beneficiary. Others have purchased new property which needed to be included in the Will. It’s never too early to draft your Will and doing so can provide peace of mind in these uncertain times. Tax planning is also important to ensure your assets are protected and that your loved ones are not hit with a hefty tax bill. n

The University of Central Lancashire is sponsoring this year’s awards. The High Sheriff of Lancashire, Mrs Catherine Penny, said: “In the last four months in my role as High Sheriff of Lancashire I have been privileged to hear of many people who have been selfless and put themselves out to help others in the community. It is always particularly
young people who are shaping our future. Driven by a real sense of public service, these young people often don’t recognise the difference they’re making, so these awards are the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate them.” Approval of a parent or guardian is needed for the

MEDICAL TREATMENT GONE WRONG? If you think you have received medical care that is below standard, you may have a right to claim. Leonie Millard of Forbes Solicitors explains
M
edical professionals have a duty of care to their patients to provide reasonable medical treatment. When that care is substandard and causes the patient harm, it is medical negligence, also commonly referred to as clinical negligence.
Making a claim
There are two main elements to a claim: 1 Did the clinician act in accordance with a responsible and logical body of legal opinion? To begin, you must establish that the standard of treatment provided has fallen below the standard expected of a reasonably competent clinician dealing with your condition. The only way to do this would be to obtain copies of your medical records and ask an expert to comment on the standard of treatment. In other words, if you were in a room with a number of clinicians practicing in the same area as that clinician you felt was negligent, and you were to ask them what they would have done in your case, if most of them say they would have done the same thing, then that would not be considered negligent. If some would, and some wouldn’t, that would still not be good enough to prove negligence. The majority would have to agree the treatment was below standard. 2 If you can establish the treatment was below standard, you then have to show that the poor treatment has caused you extra pain, suffering, loss and damage over and above that which you may have experienced had you received the appropriate treatment.
How do you investigate?
If significant harm, or the potential for significant harm has been identified by a hospital trust there ought to be a ‘duty of candour notification’ report.
We can take instructions and review the medical records to consider the merit in the case. The next stage is obtaining a written opinion from a medical expert, away from the local area, who will review your medical records and provide their opinion on both of these elements of a claim.
What type of things can you claim for?
That will depend on the nature and extent of the injury. There is potential to claim for, loss of earnings, accommodation, transport, equipment, mobility, therapies, education and care and assistance with independent living. Compensation is tailored to the needs of the individual and is designed to put the person back in the position that they would have been had the incident not occurred.
How long will it take to make a claim?
How long a case takes to conclude depends on the individual case, the opponent and what happened. We coordinate a team of medical specialists and barristers to work on your behalf, guiding you every step of the way. The opponent has two options, to accept liability and negotiate compensation, or deny fault. In a strong case we would start the Court process. The majority of cases settle before a trial and mediation is encouraged.
family life. The right compensation restores confidence and avoids the need to rely on local authority provision where resources are pressured and the future uncertain.
How will the money be paid? Each case differs, but we are able to offer a holistic service. In relevant cases there is the option to consider a ‘structured settlement’ comprising of a lump sum to accommodate immediate needs and periodical payments for the rest of a client’s life. Periodical payments can represent better provision where it is uncertain how long the injured person will live following the injury. This provides reassurance to the Claimant and their loved ones that the money will not run out and their ongoing needs will be met. This is of particular importance where an injured child is likely to outlive his or her parents. If receipt of compensation is likely to affect the payment of any benefits, the money can be ring fenced in a Personal Injury Trust in order to protect them. If the client is an infant or a patient, there will be the need for the Court to approve the amount to be accepted. The money is then often invested based on advice, and the money managed by a Professional Deputy. The specialists at Forbes act in this capacity in a number of cases. n
Do I have to wait until the end for compensation? Calculation of a financial settlement will often rely on several experts to assess value. In a strong case we can seek an interim payment to assist with immediate needs and allow help whilst the true extent of the damage is investigated. Adequate compensation restores some normality to

Hold a Halloween disco with glow sticks, a family friendly Halloween movie night or have a spooky story time by candlelight. A CAPITAL STAYCATION Liz and I love to travel as many of you know and my bucket list continues to grow. But this year it has all come to a grinding halt – this dreaded virus has thwarted many of our plans and no doubt yours too, writes Tedd Walmsley
A
s I write there are only eight countries in Europe deemed safe to travel to without quarantine on return – so our thoughts and plans have turned to the UK and we hope to visit some of our favourite areas before the end of the year. Where better place to start than in London and a trip to the iconic Stafford Hotel. I would argue there has never been
a better time to visit our capital city, and while theatre-land waits for the green light to re-open there is still so much to see and do. The Stafford is tucked away and provides the perfect home away from home in historic St James – just minutes away from the Royal parks and palaces, Westminster and incredible shopping with a host of other available attractions and museums, which are open and safe to visit. From check-in to check-out, the staff and service was superb. Discreet and helpful, it was a pleasure to stay and feel part of this extended family. We were taking advantage of the city break package outlined in this article, which meant a lovely upgrade to a stunning room and having travelled in from Oxford (another tick in our UK bucket list box) we simply spent the first afternoon relaxing and taking advantage of our room and its facilities. Each room is individual and bespoke, but all have sumptuous fabrics,
eclectic artwork and stunning design. The bed and linens guarantee a good night’s sleep and the marble bathrooms and plump soft towels provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation.
OUR EXPERIENCE AT THE HOTEL AND SISTER RESTAURANT WAS NOTHING SHORT OF FIRST CLASS Our food and drink experience at the hotel and sister restaurant were nothing short of first class – our pre-drinks both evenings were in the iconic American Bar, which exudes sophistication and elegance. It’s a popular meeting place for residents and non-residents alike, and the odd celebrity here and there. Dinner on our first night was in The Game Bird and was a treat of modern British comfort food. Our highlight was the impressive beef Wellington to share,

cooked to perfection and served with true style and panache. Our second night was a delicious Sicilian experience at the off-site Norma – a short cab ride away in Fitzrovia. The celebrated chef Ben Tish has created a charming and welcoming experience with a combination of southern Italian and Moorish influenced food which was a true treat for the tastebuds. Breakfast as you would expect is also an experience, it’s unhurried and plentiful with an array of classics and combinations that could never disappoint. By using the hotel as a base, we were able to walk just about everywhere, a morning stroll through Green Park and along the Mall to Buckingham Palace. We then took in the Royal parks and completed our morning with a shopping experience in Piccadilly. The city break offer represents
incredible value this autumn and with so little opportunity for foreign travel I can recommend wholeheartedly a trip to London and a stay at The Stafford. A combination of its position, quality food and service make it unbeatable and supports our UK tourism and hospitality sector with a bucket list staycation. n

in September. The induction day launched as the new Year 7 students participated in a treasure hunt around the school grounds, the lower sixth form students engaged in the common room and the infant children had fun in their new classes. Staff and parents have worked hard to allow a seamless transition, whilst many safety measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of the Westholme community.
Westholme School has partnered with Springfield Care Home, part of Four Seasons Healthcare, to continue its support within the local community. Year 7 students ‘adopted a grandparent’ to celebrate National Grandparents Day, as residents of the care home have not been able to see family or friends since May. The students delivered pamper hampers containing gifts and postcards to show they are being thought of.

A SAFE RETURN TO SCHOOL Staff at Westholme School were delighted to open their doors for all students at the start of September

veryone returned to Westholme with smiles on their faces as they adapted once again into the routine of learning in the classroom. The Westholme family stayed very busy during lockdown, supporting their local community by providing donations of PPE equipment to surgeries and hospitals to help do their part in the battle against Covid-19. In addition, we have already reported how the Westholme catering team were proudly involved with the Thomas Franks Feeding Communities initiative where they raised in the region of £20,000 in order to provide meals and donations to the Blackburn Food Bank and much more. However, it does not stop there. National Grandparents Day on Sunday 4th October sees Westholme School partnering with their neighbour, Springfield Care Home, part of
Four Seasons Healthcare on Preston New Road, to continue their support within the local community. Lockdown was a difficult time for everyone, including those in care homes who have not seen their family or friends since May. Students at Westholme decided to do their part by ‘adopting a grandparent’ and sending a postcard and a small gift to the care home residents to help put a smile on their faces and let them know they are being thought of on this very special day.
STAFF, STUDENTS AND PARENTS ALIKE HAVE WORKED EXTREMELY HARD TO ALLOW A SEAMLESS TRANSITION FOR THE RETURN TO LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM Furthermore, Westholme’s youngest children at the Infant and Junior School have been working on a ‘tree of thanks’ where they have written down what they are thankful for about being back in school since lockdown. This has been a lovely way for the children to understand and appreciate the importance of school life and of growing friendships. Staff, students and parents alike have worked extremely hard to allow a seamless transition for the return to learning in the classroom. Numerous measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and welfare of the whole Westholme community, including the introduction of year group bubbles, a specific rota for lunchtime, protective screens
throughout the school and specific mask wearing and hand sanitising policies. Each year group bubble also has an allocated outdoor area so the students can still take advantage of the stunning grounds. These measures have allowed students and staff to focus on the important part of school: teaching and learning whilst staying safe. From our youngest children in Pre School, all the way through to Sixth Form, all students are delighted to be back in the safe and nurturing environment of Westholme School. They are once again enjoying all that a Westholme education has to offer. n

riginally qualified as a Chartered Surveyor, Rob has over 40 years’ experience in both public and private sector joint ventures, urban regeneration and economic development, working on high profile projects at Liverpool City Council Estates, Knowsley Borough Council, Pilkington Properties, Speke Garston Development Company, NWDA Rochdale Kingsway Business Park and Re-Blackpool. Originally from the Wirral, but now living in Ormskirk, he comes from a family of local government officers and so working in the same sector came as no surprise. He has worked on some major contracts across the north west and Cumbria over the years, from town centre developments, residential properties on industrial sites and the regeneration of Speke airport. In 2002 he moved to the Urban Generation company in Blackpool, however when that wound up, he went to work for Blackpool Council heading up an economic development company.
WE’VE HAD OUR CHALLENGES, BUT WE HAVE BEEN ENCOURAGED BY WHAT WE ARE SEEING SO FAR
Blackpool is seeing a period of growth. Good transport links, low business rates and being a popular tourist destination are all in the town’s favour. Tracy Hargreaves talks to Rob Green at Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, a multi-million-pound scheme that is going from strength to strength
He is currently the head of enterprise zones on Blackpool’s growth and prosperity team, heading up the promotion and regeneration of Hillhouse Enterprise Zone (138 hectares) and Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone (144 hectares), with a special responsibility for overseeing Blackpool Airport, as part of Blackpool’s £1bn growth and prosperity investment programme for region. “It’s been so exciting to work on,” said Rob. “I only thought I would be here for a couple of years. The council have been so supportive and positive. We’ve had our challenges, but we have been encouraged by what we are seeing so far.” Blackpool has seen some £500 million of investment over the last few years resulting in an impressive renaissance. However this only represents the beginning with many more schemes now being actively developed with Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone leading the way, over its 25 year life span it will transform the Blackpool and the Fylde Coast’s economic base with over £300 million of private investment and the creation of 5,000 jobs supported by new infrastructure. All of this means that a revitalised Blackpool is

not just an attractive place to work and visit, but also a great place to invest. “We’ve had some really good companies move in,” said Rob. The site is home to around 100 businesses, including the Silverline call line charity, set up by Esther Rantzen to help the elderly and vulnerable and a 40,000 sq factory for Multi-Ply, which makes components for medical X-ray equipment.” The Enterprise Zone has also kept its aircraft heritage. It is home to one of the bases for the North West Air Ambulance and in 2018 a state-of-the-art flight simulator that is based on a B737-800NG model, the world’s leading twin-engine passenger aircraft opened, where enthusiasts can take control in the captain’s seat for the full experience of take-off, in flight cruising and landing at international airports of their choice. In addition, Blackpool Airport is home to the Hangar 42 aviation museum which hosts a vintage, air-worthy Hurricane fighter of the type which fought in Polish colours against the Nazis in the Battle of Britain. Despite Covid, work on the Enterprise Zone has continued. “Things are still broadly on track,” adds Rob. “they are just taking a little bit longer. Meeting virtually is not always ideal, most of the construction industry has carried on, but some companies have been cautious and deferred decisions.
“A lot of the smaller airports shut at the beginning of lockdown, but Blackpool kept going for executive travel, private flights and for transport to the oil rigs. We also haven’t seen much in the way of business casualties. Business rates relief has

encouraged a lot of smaller companies to take some of the vacant outlets we have. “This is a 25-year programme and we estimate a diversification of employment. It has already seen the creation of more than 1500 jobs for local people. Many think Blackpool’s main income is tourism, but it actually has large manufacturing and energy sectors as well as medical technology.” The next exciting phase for the Enterprise Zone will be the creation of new sports facilities. Located at Common Edge Road, the sports development scheme will cover approximately 14 hectares to the south east of the Enterprise Zone, along Common Edge Road. It includes 12 new grass pitches, a full size 3G rugby and football pitch with floodlighting, training and spectator facilities, plus a new changing and social pavilion. “The new development and improved facilities will enhance the sporting experience and sports training opportunities at the site for the local people,” said Rob. “I feel privileged to be part of such an exciting scheme which will make a difference to the people and businesses in Blackpool and really put the town on the map as a place for innovation and investment.” n

he financial pages and the many websites devoted to money management are full of suggestions for where you should invest your hard earned or recently inherited cash. In these increasingly volatile times, though, there is another way for you to achieve wealth through your investments, and it happens to be right on your doorstep. Property investment is one of the most stable and reliable choices when it comes to wealth management, and the team at Flagship North Investments, in Preston, are ideally placed to guide you through this process. With a wealth of experience and local knowledge, MD Matthew Knowles and operations manager, Rachel Suthers, provide a bespoke service tailored to individual clients’ needs.
“Property is an extremely stable investment,” says Matthew. “Housing will always be in demand and therefore holds its value over time, giving it a clear advantage over riskier stocks and shares. “Property investment offers capital growth over time and can provide a long-term income, which brings its own benefits to the client in terms of security and lifestyle.” Despite the relatively risk-free nature of property investment, it’s a route to wealth still overlooked by many, possibly because they’re unsure how to approach it. “That’s where we come in,” says Matthew. “As a premium property sourcing business, we can take on the whole project for our clients.” Flagship North will first establish exactly what a potential client hopes to achieve from their investment. An initial strategy
If a client is buying a property with an aim to refurbish it and sell it on at a higher price, Flagship North can assist there too. Matthew explains: “We have a professional refurbishment arm to the business which means we can assist with refurbishing a property, to a strict timescale with a view to a quick resale.” Matthew and Rachel know Lancashire very well and are perfectly placed to help you take the first steps on the property investment ladder. “Preston really is an up-and-coming city with so much growth and many excellent investment opportunities,” says Rachel. “We offer free, no obligation advice, so anyone with money to invest should contact us to explore the opportunities.” So, whether you’re looking for a quick return on your investment or aiming to build a property portfolio for the long term, it makes sense to make the first move with Flagship North Investments. n

THE YEAR OF COVID RAGES ON BUT IS YOUR BUSINESS SAFE?
W
ith the furlough scheme’s expiration imminent and many businesses making the move from the comfort and safety of their homes back to the office, it’s time to ask yourself, are you and your business ready? Coronavirus has already caused serious economic damage to the UK and there are very little signs of change within the immediate future. With a plethora of new office regulations already in place post lockdown, and government updates changing almost daily, businesses are taking the time to ensure their working environment is Covid-secure, but the question remains, how secure is their business? An uncertain future awaits business owners across the UK, with many external factors affecting not only the day-to-day running of an organisation but the overall survival of the business itself. There are many ways that you can protect your business should the worst happen, but you must act fast. With the current pandemic in full force, why not consider the various specialised insurance protections that can help your business?
Key Person Protection
The death or long-term illness of a key employee can have a devastating effect on the future of a business, ensuring a cover
As businesses face continued uncertainty, and we all crave ‘normality’, Towers and Gornall are perfectly placed to support you to ensure your business is protected and Covid secure, writes Gail Bailey to assist a company in such occurrences can provide the support required to keep a business moving. Directors and employees with highly specialised skills or knowledge are key members of staff for the company they work for. To lose one through an unforeseen departure can have damaging effects on the business. Key persons insurance is an assured way of protecting a business and has a variety of benefits which include: 1. Paying the costs of a temporary replacement 2. Meeting the costs of recruiting a permanent replacement 3. Covering the cost of death or incapacity of a key member of staff Many businesses will ignore the risks of losing key members of staff, but protection could ultimately protect the overall survival of a business.
Shareholder Protection
It is common to find that shareholders make
plans for passing on their shares either before or after retirement. However, it is also important to ensure that the sudden death of a shareholder does not cause adverse financial predicaments for the remaining shareholders. Risks to remaining directors could be detrimental if a shortage of financial support should arise, taking out protection such as life funding cover will enable a business financial support when they need it. n Do you want to secure your businesses safety? ADMINISTERING AN ESTATE REMOTELY? HELP IS AT HAND While lockdown slowed down many areas of life, administering an estate cannot be put on hold. Senior associate solicitor Charlotte Cooper, a specialist in probate, explains how the industry has responded to the needs of those who are having to administer estates remotely
H
ere at Napthens our specialist teams have been working together (remotely) and making good use of technology to help clients through the process: • All postal communication is scanned and stored electronically so lawyers can consider and process post from the office or home
• Client identification is now quicker and secure through our new app • We are registered for the online probate registration service so simple probates can be sent electronically • Notification to banks is largely processed through electronic portals so we can obtain financial information, pay funerals and obtain Inheritance Tax funds all online
Online searches
Our Probate Asset Search service is an online search facility to locate records of any assets or liabilities in the name of the deceased for
the last 10 years. So, even if self-isolation means family cannot enter a property to find paperwork, we can locate details remotely. Our relationship with Certainty Will Register means we can still search for missing wills anywhere in the country. This is a great relief to many who are in greater distress because they were possibly unable to see loved ones before they passed away. While HMRC and the Registry struggle with large numbers of applications with reduced staff, there has been no amendment to the time period for filing papers and clients are relieved we have the facility to help and support them even though face to face meetings may not be possible.
Clients are much more considered about how an inheritance should be invested as they are concerned about future economic conditions and many are seeing the benefit of taking professional financial advice to ensure their financial objectives are met. Throughout these strange times, our Probate team has been working closely with our colleagues in Estate Planning to ensure our clients have the best tax and succession planning in place. Of course, the reality is, while technology helps the process along, the personal touch will always be important. Please speak to one of our advisers to get the specialist advice and help you need. n

hen your product range is already super strong – the best of the best – it must be hard to know where to go in terms of upping the offer. Crucial then that you can rely on top designers to plot a forward path. Porsche has best of both worlds – a spectacular range of high-end cars and a design team with a flair for producing tweaks and twists capable of exciting even the most demanding of customers. Such is the case with the new Macan GTS, a distinctly sporty motor with power, performance, personality and head-turning looks. All the reasons why Porsche retains such global appeal remain, but there are a number of enhancements to make this supercar even more of a temptress. First some facts. It eats up the miles, holds the road irrespective of speed or conditions, feels and looks the business and offers excitement and pleasure to anyone lucky enough to sit in the driving seat. n * Incidentally (in case you didn’t know), the abbreviation GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport, due in no small part to outstanding driving dynamics. s a bit of a fitness goer, I’m always looking for something new to try and this week I tried pole fitness for the first time. Unfortunately, when people think of pole fitness they think of other connotations where it’s only seen in clubs, but pole fitness is growing in popularity because it has lots of health benefits and is something that you can do while being socially distanced! So, what is pole fitness? It is essentially a series of exercises performed on a vertical pole which can improve upper and core strength, endurance, flexibility and confidence. Starting with basic moves you can step up to more complicated ones, building up to full routines. It is a complete body workout, because you are using your own bodyweight, you will soon build up strength in your upper body including biceps and triceps making it a great way to tone. For many, it can build self-confidence. Don’t think you have to be young and super skinny to take part, there are people there of all ages, shapes and sizes and at different levels. No one, except the instructor, is watching you as they are all concentrating on their own routines,
LEARNING A BASIC ROUTINE IS GOOD FOR OUR MINDS AND KEEPS IT FOCUSED ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING It’s also good for our body. While you are not putting stress on your joints, as you would if you were running, you are still strengthening your muscles and improving joint mobility and increasing flexibility, something we all need as we get older. In addition, if you are regularly doing moves which involve different parts of your body simultaneously on and off the pole, you will develop greater balance and coordination, which again will help us in later life, preventing falls as we get older. It gets your heart going. Any exercise which increases your heart rate is good and while you might not think you are doing much at the beginning, you might be surprised if you feel a little out of breath. As with any exercise it’s important to warm up and cool down. Wear sweatshirts and joggers making sure all your muscles are warm and stretched. When you begin your class, don’t push yourself too much. Know your body’s limitations and don’t feel disheartened if you can’t do a move first time. There are many pole fitness studios around Preston and the Fylde area and the one I went to was so friendly and supportive. So, grab the pole and give it a go. n

LET’S GET BAKING! According to nationalbakingweek.co.uk,
Over the last few months many there are lots of benefits other than just people have taken to the kitchen eating the yummy creations. to get their creative juices flowing and either started to cook from scratch or bake, bake, bake writes Tracy Hargreaves
B
ritain’s fascination with baking and cooking has been growing year on year and especially with TV shows such as The Great British Bake Off proving immensely popular, photos of everyone’s attempt at banana bread appeared all over Instagram and Facebook during lockdown. This year National Baking Week falls between 14th and 20th October. Pyrex originally founded National Baking Week back in 2007 with other like-minded baking brands, with the aim of encouraging people of all abilities to bake at home. But baking can also be good for us.
WE ALL LOVE THE SMELL OF FRESHLY BAKED BREAD OR CAKES COMING OUT OF THE OVEN AND THIS CAN HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON OUR MOOD Baking stimulates the senses. We all love the smell of freshly baked bread or cakes coming out of the oven and this can have a positive effect on our mood. Baking is creative. If you are baking for yourself, there is no right or wrong way of doing something. It’s a chance to experiment with flavours, ingredients, colourings and textures. Baking makes other people happy. We’ve all seen the smile on people’s faces when someone brings homemade cakes into the office. In Lancashire we are lucky to have a
plethora of established independent bakers and cake makers. All You Knead, Lathoms, Artisan Foodworks and Filbert’s Bakery to name a few. In addition, many people have swapped careers and followed their passion to set up their own cake making business. So, what’s the secret to making a great cake? If you haven’t baked before your best bet is to follow a simple recipe and make sure you have all the ingredients and equipment in before you start. Use measuring spoons rather than tableware and stick to one form of measuring ie ounces or grams. Every oven is different so it may take a while to get used to cooking times. Always keep an eye out and check it’s not burning. Cakes are usually best on the middle shelf to ensure even cooking. Keep the oven door closed and to check your cake is cooked put a skewer in, it should come out clean. Once you’ve mastered the basic sponge, the world’s your oyster. Start building up your confidence and experimenting, but most of all enjoy! n
food&drink As it’s Halloween coming up, here’s a recipe for you all to try, courtesy of BBC Good Food. Perfect for your little ones or wrap up individually and give as gifts.
Spider web chocolate fudge muffins Ingredients 50g dark chocolate (55% cocoa solids is fine) 85g butter 1 tbsp milk, water or coffee 200g self-raising flour 1 /2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 85g light muscovado sugar 50g golden caster sugar 1 egg 142ml carton soured cream For the topping 100g dark chocolate (as above) 100g white chocolate Method Preheat the oven to fan 170C/conventional 190C/gas 5 and line a muffin tin with 10 paper muffin cases. Break the chocolate into a heatproof bowl, add the butter and liquid. Melt in the microwave on Medium for 30-45 seconds (or set the bowl over a pan of gently simmering water). Stir and leave the mixture to cool. Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and both sugars in a bowl. Beat the egg in another bowl and stir in the soured cream, then pour this on the flour mixture and add the cooled chocolate. Stir just to combine – don’t over mix or it will get tough. Spoon the mixture into the cases to about three quarters full. Bake for 20 minutes until well risen. Loosen the edges with a round-bladed knife, let them sit in the tins for a few minutes, then lift out and cool on a wire rack. For the topping, make two piping bags out of greaseproof paper (or cut the ends off two clean plastic bags). Break the dark and white chocolate into separate bowls and melt in the microwave on Medium for 2 minutes (or over a pan as in step 1). Put 2 spoonful’s of dark chocolate in one bag and the same of white chocolate in the other. Working with one muffin at a time, spread with dark chocolate from the bowl, letting it run down a bit, then pipe four concentric circles of white chocolate on top. Using a small skewer, drag through the circles at regular intervals, from the centre to the edge, to create a cobweb effect. Repeat with four more muffins. On the remaining five, spread over the white chocolate and decorate with the dark. Best eaten the day they’re made – even better while the chocolate’s soft.

ASSAM TEA TO SUPPORT THE PRINCE’S COUNTRYSIDE FUND
AWARD FOR PRESTON ENTREPRENEUR
The government initiative, ‘Eat out to help out’ during August has been deemed a success with Preston eateries, with many local establishments carrying on with their own offers throughout the month of September. Pubs, cafes and restaurants that took part in the scheme said they had seen an increase in customer numbers just when they needed some extra help to make up for lost income caused by the coronavirus lockdown.
Booths has been crowned Supermarket of the Year at the Decanter Retailer Awards 2020. The prestigious awards recognise the best wine retailers based on range, service and innovation. Booths beat stiff competition including Waitrose, Marks & Spencer the Coop and discounter Aldi to win the award which they won in 2017 and were runner up in 2019. Decanter is the wine industry’s go-to publication for wine enthusiasts, connoisseurs and wine trade professionals.
Booths has developed a blend of tea to celebrate 10 years of supporting The Prince’s Countryside Fund. Booths will donate 10 per cent of the purchase price of its signature blend of Royal Assam Tea to the fund. Tea is at the root of Booths, as its founder Edwin Henry Booth started as a tea trader and travelled the world in search of fine teas and coffee to bring back to Lancashire.
Sandgrown Spirits makers of Lytham Gin’s Bee’s Knees and The Navigator’s Navy Strength has received two star awards for both products in the Great Taste Awards 2020. After four and a half years, owners of the Plungington Hotel in Fulwood, The Meat and Drink group have handed over the reins to new operators. The Plungington Hotel will now undergo a refurbishment by the new operator Admiral Taverns.
Preston entrepreneur Kirsty Henshaw has been voted Food & Drink Entrepreneur of the Year for the north west in the 2020 Great British Entrepreneur Awards. 135 awards were handed out to 135 founders of 110 businesses across 15 categories and eight regions as the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to take the regional finals online for the first time. The category winners will go onto the National Final in a bid to become the national winner of their respective category, with one being named 2020 Great British Entrepreneur of the Year.

A message from our Principal At Oakhill we really are a family. Every child and their family are known to us and will continue to be throughout their time at school and beyond. We welcome parental involvement and want you to feel part of our community, whether that is by joining in activities, social events or just feeling that our door is always open to you if you have any concerns or need reassurance. Here at Oakhill, we value the individual and provide our students with a place where they can develop and mature into whoever they are destined to be. Our pupils succeed because we place them at the heart of all that we do and they
grow into strong, confident, resilient young people with the ability to think critically, creatively and independently. Most importantly for us they are happy and well adjusted, ready for whatever challenges they might face in the outside world and secure in the strong moral foundation we have given them. We would love to welcome you to our school so that you can see us in action and meet our students who are, without doubt, our greatest achievement.
