Magazines Editor Welcome to our Christmas edition and while the festive season will be a little bit different this year, we can still make it special. In our food and drink section we talk about shopping local for all your Christmas Day trimmings. Support your independent butchers and farmers markets for locally sourced produce and you’ll also find some inspiration for some great foodie gifts for friends and family. Do you remember getting the board games out and playing some old favourites, such as Trivial Pursuit, Charades and Scrabble? Well now you can play Preston MONOPOLY. It has just been launched in time for Christmas and all the London favourites have been replaced by Preston landmarks, such as the Harris Museum, the Flag Market, Deepdale and the University of Centra Lancashire. Give it a go and see how much property you can buy up! In our area feature, we highlight the town of Garstang. A place which thrives on an array of independent retailers. The town’s community has pulled together to make sure visitors and locals alike feel safe when they are shopping. Stores will hopefully reopen soon, but don’t forget that you can still support local by purchasing from their websites. Also, in Garstang is our Business Hour interviewee, Salina Somalya an artist who has always had a passion for art and is now making amazing pieces of art from plastics. And finally, if you need some inspiration for Christmas presents, our gift pages have got it covered. From all of us at Live Preston & Fylde magazine we wish you a safe and Happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in the New year. Tracy Hargreaves Editor

ARE BOARDGAMES MAKING A COMEBACK? I remember many a Boxing Day when we got together as a family and brought out the board games or played Charades. It usually ended up with either everyone in stitches or in tears depending on whether someone had lost or won, but that was part of Christmas, writes Tracy Hargreaves
B
ut are games still as popular today as they used to be? They have just changed and adapted along the way and are no longer just for children, they can bring out the kid in most of us. The simple game of Pie Face became a massive hit several years ago.You had to load the arm with whipped cream or the included sponge, then take turns sliding your head through the mask and spinning the spinner. It was even played by many a celebrity on The Jonathan Ross Show! Other popular games include the classics Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and Cluedo, followed by Pictionary, Battleships and Connect Four,
with many travel versions made so you could take away on those family holidays and play on rainy days.
HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX AND GET YOUR MIND INTO SOMETHING ELSE. YOU’LL FEEL COMPLETELY REFRESHED But did you know there are also many benefits to playing a board game. We all enjoy spending time with people and to spend it laughing and joking is a good way

the traditional London places and properties changed for local landmarks. The Grade 1 listed Harris Museum and Art Gallery is crowned the new Mayfair of Preston and also included in the board’s most expensive set will be the Winckley Square Hotel, which gets to replace Park Lane from the original. Other landmarks starring in this edition include Deepdale, the red telephone boxes on Market Street, the University of Central Lancashire and the Flag Market.
to release those endorphins while you interact with each other, whether it’s with your nine year old child or your 90 year old granny. It encourages teamwork, having to pair up or work together is good experience, especially for the little ones. Plus, they can be educational too. Adding up scores or being the banker in MONOPOLY is a great way to learn to count money to test your maths. It’s a break from technology. Too many of us now sit in the same room, all on our own phones not speaking to anyone. Have a social media detox and get your mind into something else. You’ll feel completely refreshed. However, one game which has never gone away is MONOPOLY. Now available in more than 40 countries and in 25 different languages, it’s played by all the family and now comes in many different versions from Football to Pacman MONOPOLY. And now Preston has its very own edition – Preston MONOPOLY, with all
Several charities ‘Pass GO’ too, including St Catherine’s Hospice,One Voice Community Choir and Dig In. The train stations from the original board are handed over to a ‘travel’ theme including Preston Guild Wheel and Preston train station. The Mayor of Preston Cllr David Borrow, says: “This is a very tough time for Preston and Lancashire so we need all the good news we can get. Preston’s very own MONOPOLY game highlights what’s special about the

city and is great for all the family. Just in time for Christmas.” Mark Whittle, Preston BID manager, adds: “Preston is fortunate to be home to many outstanding landmarks, businesses and charities. MONOPOLY conjures up lots of great memories for so many people – this we are sure will be the perfect gift for Christmas.”
PRESTON’S VERY OWN MONOPOLY GAME HIGHLIGHTS WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THE CITY AND IS GREAT FOR ALL THE FAMILY The board has been produced by Winning Moves UK, under official license from the MONOPOLY brand, owned by Hasbro. The new edition is now available at stores across Preston including WHSmith, Waterstones, Ryman and The Works – and is widely available online, including on Amazon. As well as the classics, there will be a new range of games to hit the shelves this Christmas. Whether you want games that test your mental ability, such as Herd Mentality, where the most obvious answer wins or something more physical such as Trapped – Escape Room Game Packs, where you turn your house into an escape room and you need to solve puzzles before you can escape each room. So, switch off your phone, let your hair down and take part in some family fun this festive season. n

With winter upon us a greater number of us seek the pleasures that emanate from those cosy moments, writes Anna Souroullas
N EMBRACE HYGGE
othing represents cosy nights more than candles, fluffy socks and blankets paired with a piping hot chocolate. Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is all about creating that warm and cosy atmosphere that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. It is associated heavily with the Danish culture, but it is often a concept that is misunderstood. The true essence of hygge stems from that feeling stimulated by the smaller things in life, it’s not a feeling that can be forced. Have you ever enjoyed getting lost in a good book? Or a candlelit bath on a Friday evening? Or have you curled up on the sofa watching films with those you love around you? Did this generate a feeling of fulfilment? Then you have experienced hygge. Even though those hygge feelings cannot be bought, I have a few tips and tricks that can help to promote a calm and soothing space in your home. I hope that they can help in your search for those moments of peace.
IT’S THE SMALL MOMENTS, THOSE NUGGETS OF SERENITY, WHICH PROVIDE A MUCH-NEEDED ESCAPE In uncertain times, it is natural to feel a little overwhelmed, and so bringing a little calm to the storm can often go a long way. It’s the small moments, those nuggets of serenity, which provide a much-needed escape from your stresses. Here are the four ways in which you can revamp your living space to induce those coveted hygge feelings: Declutter: Being surrounded by clutter often disturbs that tranquil sanctuary you have envisioned. Set out to abolish clutter in your home and restore your safe haven. Even small amounts of clutter can often make your living space appear cramped and busy. Purchase storage boxes and baskets to hold your necessities and donate as much as you possibly can. Restore that atmosphere of calm and relaxation and create a space that you can withdraw to.

homesinsideout Keep it simple: Exploit the most visible spaces such as shelves, windowsills and walls. Hygge involves furnishing your living spaces with items that truly make you happy. Surround yourself with framed photographs, items you have collected during your travels, or even a shelf filled with your favourite books, for example. Reminiscing each time you see those memories will engender those hygge feelings through the small smiles – reliving how you felt in that moment, who you were with and what you were doing. Now more than ever, remembering those memories can bring us comfort and help us to look to the future.
HYGGE. CREATING A SPACE THAT YOU ENJOY BEING IN, CREATING GOOD FEELINGS WITH GOOD PEOPLE Create your own ‘hyggekrog’: A hyggekrog is more commonly referred to as a nook. Creating a cosy space that you want to escape to. Warm woollen blankets and cosy, comfy cushions, plants and wooden items to bring a little bit of nature inside with a warm colour palette. Surround yourself with all of these items to create a safe space to help disconnect with the outside world. Sometimes you may not realise when you need a break the most. Providing a space that compels you to take time for yourself regularly, will help to generate those desired hygge feelings, and ensure they are here to stay. Create a warm atmosphere: If you are one of the lucky individuals with access to a fireplace, this is a perfect way to establish that cosy atmosphere in your home. To me, there is nothing more relaxing that curling up in front of a fire, whether that’s indoors or outdoors, and hearing the crackling of the flames. If you do not have access to a fireplace, using candles, lots and lots of candles, can achieve the same warmth. How about lighting candles on a Friday night and drawing yourself a bath? Or lighting candles when you are watching a film? Or having a romantic meal with your significant other? The gentle glow of a candle or two is much more relaxing than the light shining from the ceiling. Just try to make sure it is not a fire hazard! Hygge. Creating a space that you enjoy being in, creating good feelings with good people. It’s about appreciating the small things, appreciating where you are, finding moments of peace in a frantic world. n

Inside the unit is a designated shaver or toothbrush holder with charger so you can close the doors with everything perfectly in its place.” Even with lockdown, The Original Bathroom Company was able to arrange the bathroom to be fitted on time: “We were having an especially difficult time as I had been diagnosed with bowel cancer,” recalls Sue. “The local plumbing company used was APG Domestic Services and they were fantastic, complying with all Covid safety measures, having just one person in the house wherever possible and really going above and beyond, providing an absolutely brilliant service.

I had some fixed ideas of what I wanted and Rob kept designing until I was completely happy.” Rob incorporated everything Sue wanted in her new bathroom and gave her plenty
of options. “For the shower, I wanted a simple glass sheet without any trim or handles for easy cleaning and this is exactly what I got. “I wanted a look that wouldn’t date so we chose natural colours and finishes. It’s a massive bathroom so we opted for huge floor tiles that continue into the shower and had the same tiles cut to edge the walls, which finishes it off really nicely. The under-stairs cupboard has been transformed into a walk-in shower area, which is a fantastic use of space. The amazing overhead shower is like standing under rainfall – I find it so relaxing. Pair with a nuanced white like School House White in Modern Emulsion which is ideal for taking over the ceiling if it is low as you will be less aware of where the wall stops and the ceiling begins. If you’re lucky enough to have a utility or boot room leading off from the kitchen, rather than continuing the same cabinet
THREE RECIPES FOR A STYLISH KITCHEN Farrow & Ball Brand Ambassador Patrick O’Donnell explains how you can create wonderful colourways in the room that is at the heart of your home
T
hese recipes for a stylish kitchen can be either subtle or dramatic. Choose from classic, country or city chic.
Recipe 1 URBAN CLASSIC For an urban, yet timeless kitchen, opt for a monochromatic scheme using just one colour in the appropriate finishes to create seamless continuity. Using one colour also creates a simple decorative backdrop for your furniture and fabrics – with Farrow and Ball’s Purbeck Stone in Modern Eggshell on the cabinets and Purbeck Stone in Modern Emulsion on the walls. The joy of using the Modern finishes provides you with the comfort of knowing that you can wash or wipe down your walls and units when your gastronomic creativity gets a little over-zealous!
Recipe 2 PRETTY COTTAGE FARMHOUSE Choose delicate shades to create a warm yet light space that has empathy with the building while delivering a note of modernity with a pop of darker colour in a utility space
colour, go for a bolder contrast, this will add a lovely antidote to the gentleness of the kitchen space and feel more utilitarian.
Recipe 3 COUNTRY OR CITY ELEGANCE We all know that kitchens can be a vast investment, so getting the colour right is essential and what better way than to choose a palette that has longevity and integrity. Above, we have the elegant combination of three complementary colours, Oval Room Blue in Modern Eggshell on wall cabinetry and Modern Emulsion on the cooker wall, Ammonite in Modern Eggshell on the woodwork and Modern Emulsion on the walls and ceilings and finally a little accent of Down Pipe in Modern Eggshell on the kitchen island. All three colours work seamlessly together to create a timeless look that will still hold its own in 15 years’ time while delivering enough drama to flatter the scale of the room. n farrowandball.com Local stockist: rockform.co.uk

FESTIVE FIRS Cut Christmas trees have been a festive favourite in Britain since the 1830s, Michael Cookson, owner of Newgate Nurseries, guides us through his best-selling trees
CHRISTMAS WREATH MAKING IS A FAMILY TRADITION AT NEWGATE NURSERIES
Owner Michael Cookson explains: “My grandfather and father started hand making wreaths in the late 1950s and we are still at it today.” Not a lot has changed. All Newgate’s wreaths are hand made on site at the extensive plant nursery which is open to the public and trade seven days a week throughout the year. We cut holly from sustainable sources, only lightly prune the trees, so we can keep going back. The holly is then trimmed to size by trained cutters and then mixed into handfuls with pre cut conifer. This is then skill fully wrapped onto a circular straw base. Eight or nine handfuls later the wreath is finished and ready for decorating.” Newgate sell thousands of Christmas wreaths through its Whitestake Nursery and market stall in Clitheroe. On top of this Newgate also produce large quantities of Christmas pots and holly crosses, as well as selling almost 1000 Christmas trees. It also stocks an extensive range of turf/compost/pottery and water features and with plans to open a tea room in the next 12 months, Michael is excited about the future.

NORWAY SPRUCE
The original Christmas tree and the most scented. Be warned this tree sheds its needles so either bring inside late or get your hoover ready.
LODGEPOLE/SCOTCH PINE
A beautiful pine fragrance combined with good needle retention makes this an excellent choice.
FRASIR FIR
This slim non-drop tree is the only option for those with a tight space to fill. Blue/silver needles with a mild fragrance.
NORDMAN FIR
The most popular cut Christmas tree due to its outstanding needle retention, deep green foliage and traditional shape. This tree can be quite wide though so be prepared to give it some space.
LIVING TREES
Living trees with roots grown in containers are available in all the above varieties as well as Blue and Serbian Spruce but are smaller versions.
HOW TO KEEP IT FRESH
• De net your tree and keep outside until you’re ready to get festive • Bang the tree on the floor, allowing needles to shed and cut the bottom 2cm off the trunk and soak base in water • Don’t place near fires or radiators • Place in a stand that allows you to add water to keep hydrated • Living trees need to be brought indoors late, water regularly, then repot in John Innes ericaceous compost and keep outside after Christmas. n Pick your tree on line at: newgatedirect.co.uk

Ivy is a valuable climber or ground cover plant, perfect for a shady spot or for cladding bare fences or garden structures. with two traditional Christmas favourites – holly and ivy. They are perfect garden plants, with many boasting beautifully variegated leaves along with fruits and berries that provide seasonal food for hungry birds. Holly is hardy and evergreen, making it an ideal shrub to form part of the backbone or structure that every garden needs. Most holly plants are either male or female, so to ensure you get a crop of berries you’ll need to grow a female variety and ensure there’s a male nearby to pollinate its flowers. With thick evergreen growth and spiny foliage, holly is also a good choice of shrub to form a dense and

As an alternative to the traditional red colour scheme of Christmas try mixing white and silver for planters inside and outside for a clean and stylish look. Put grey-leafed lavender and senecio together with white cyclamen and decorate with strings of silver beads and small LED white lights. Or go for a beautiful Christmas rose – Helleborus niger – and plant with pale pink or white cyclamen and training ivy around the edges to make the container feel like it’s overflowing. n
December is definitely a time to catch up on some indoor jobs and have a rest, but for those that are out and about, here are some top tips from the Royal Horticultural Society: • Make sure there is food for garden birds • Check that greenhouse heaters are working • Prevent ponds from freezing • Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas • Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops • Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted • Take hardwood cuttings • Keep mice away from stored produce • Reduce watering of houseplants

BURNING DESIRES, PRESTON FIRST CLASS SERVICE & PRODUCTS Based in Preston, Burning Desires Limited supply and install a fabulous array of fires, fireplaces and stoves, writes Gail Bailey
F
ounded in 1991, Burning Desires Limited has grown steadily to become one of the largest retailers and trade suppliers of luxury and bespoke designed fireplaces in the North West: “Within our premier showrooms we have over 70 displays covering an extensive range of fires and fireplaces,” explains Managing Director Sean Treaddell. “We supply and install fires and fireplaces throughout the country including Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Isle of Man, the Lake
District, Yorkshire and often further afield – having recently installed a fireplace in Kent.”
WE REALLY CAN CREATE THE PERFECT CENTRE PIECE TO ANY HOME OR BUSINESS Not a company to stand still, extensive works had begun on the showroom prior to lockdown and these have now been completed with a new décor and brands in place. They also used local businesses to complete the work, including the aptly named ‘Chimney Pot’ design carpet laid by Gainsborough Flooring of Preston. “Our philosophy is to always be pro-active and we are continually looking out for new products and designs. It is important as a business never to stand still,” Sean says.
This approach is epitomised in some of the companies that Burning Desires Limited work with which includes British Fires located on the edge of the New Forest in Dorset. “British Fires are a leading manufacturer of electric fires, boasting a fantastic wide range,” Sean explains. The electric inset fire is no longer something of the past and the style and engineering of British Fires, using the most advanced technologies easily dispels that myth. Along with the electric stoves which ooze quality and authenticity, the products evoke a feeling of warmth and provide a stand-out feature in any room. Another leading range is Kalfire, a renowned designer and manufacturer of high quality gas, electric and wood-burning fireplaces established in the Netherlands in 1981. “A multi-national company who have

never lost their family ethos, Kalfire have endless variations and options within their innovative range, meaning we can help our customers create a fireplace that is perfect for them and their home,” Sean says. Burning Desires Limited also stocks the high-quality fireplaces, environmentally friendly stoves and unique collection of outdoor heating appliances from Chesneys. This British family company has 35 years’ experience of providing the highest standards of design, innovation, craftsmanship and service. “Chesneys have an amazing selection of products including a brilliant range of outdoor heat stoves,” Sean explains. The perfect solution to being able to spend time in the garden all year round. Stovax & Gazco are the UK’s largest stove and fireplace producer and another key partner at Burning Desires Limited. The range of stoves includes a number of design options, from contemporary to the more traditional. The company has been dedicated to the design and production of stoves, fires and fireplaces for over 38 years and
complements the Burning Desires Limited ethos perfectly – where the focus is not just on creating innovative designs, but also to continue to research alternative technologies which will offer sustainable heating in the years ahead.
CHESNEYS HAVE AN AMAZING SELECTION OF PRODUCTS INCLUDING A BRILLIANT RANGE OF OUTDOOR HEAT STOVES. THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO BEING ABLE TO SPEND TIME IN THE GARDEN ALL YEAR ROUND The experienced installation teams at Burning Desires Limited have many years of collective experience and this enables them to undertake all manner of projects large and small. They have a strong relationship with leading architects, developers and interior designers who they work closely with to achieve the perfect end result for their clients. The company works in both the domestic
and commercial sectors and has an amazing portfolio of installations within hotels and restaurants. Sean adds: “Our varied projects and experience allows us to install modern gas, electric or solid fuel fires, traditional fireplaces and stoves. In conjunction with fabulous natural stones, marbles and granites, we really can create the perfect centre piece to any home or business.” Sean concludes: “At Burning Desires Limited we only ever aim to provide the best service and the best products across all sectors, and within all types of properties. A first-class product and service is what we strive for and hope to deliver.” n

SAMPLE SERVICE With all safety measures in place in the showroom, home visits, virtual tours and a popular sample service, Gainsborough Flooring has it covered!
T
he Gainsborough Flooring home selection service is thriving in conjunction with visitors to the showroom. And, as the virus situation becomes more challenging, people are finding their home service very appealing, especially as the Gainsborough team try and make the home service as similar as possible to a visit to the showroom. Many clients have utilised Facetime as well as other platforms such as WhatsApp and Zoom to view the showroom and talk through their ideas with the team. Vicky Brown from Gainsborough Flooring commented: “It’s actually been fun showing visitors the showroom online and discussing ideas and going through different samples they can consider. Once they’ve selected suitable samples, we have then delivered them to the client’s home so they can see them in situ.”
Colours play a major part in the selection process and the flooring range from Gainsborough Flooring includes so many subtle differences in shades, patterns and textures that customers can tailor their choice to fit in with their particular colour scheme. In some cases it has made clients consider the rest of their furnishings and décor as the new flooring looks so stunning they feel the need to refresh the whole space! There’s also been a surge in rug sales as people are freshening their rooms up.
39
Once the new flooring has been selected the Gainsborough Flooring team works closely with the client to determine when it is best to fit the floor to ensure minimum disruption. Safety of course is of the utmost importance in a client’s home as well as in the showroom and the team wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whether they are delivering samples, measuring up or fitting a new floor. Vicky concluded: “We’ve found that clients absolutely love our sample service as it provides an added dimension to choosing the most ideal flooring for their space. They get a combination of professional support and advice from us and then can discuss the options and samples with their family and friends before making their final decision. It also saves a trip to the city centre avoiding buses or parking, especially if people are concerned about their safety in the current climate.” You’ll certainly be spoilt for choice at Gainsborough Flooring with their large range of samples from so many reputable manufacturers such as Karndean, Amtico, Alternative Flooring, Brintons and Jacaranda. n For more details about the Gainsborough home selection service or any other flooring options, please call Vicky at Gainsborough Flooring on 01772 250682 or pop along to the showroom

Now EMA is excited to introduce the new revolution in noninvasive lip and mouth region fillers, HyapenTM, for naturallooking fuller lips, and to eliminate smile lines, lips lines and marionette lines. “I’m delighted there is finally a non-invasive and natural-looking lip filler I can offer my clients, especially those scared of needles,” says Emma. “Hyapen is the ideal non-surgical volumiser for lips and the mouth region. It gently introduces hyaluronic acid fillers into the skin without a needle.

A HEALTHY, HAPPY SMILE A dazzling smile is only one by-product of healthy teeth and gums, and this new clinic will help you reap all the benefits of good oral hygiene writes Kate Ford. Photography: Roger Moore
O
ne of the first things people notice about others is their teeth. A lovely smile, revealing clean, white teeth and healthy gums, is understandably considered an attractive attribute. For many, this is incentive enough for taking oral hygiene seriously, but there are also many health-related reasons for keeping teeth clean and gums healthy. Mint Dental Hygiene is one of the first clinics of its kind in north west England, dedicated to offering expert dental hygiene services without the need for a dentist’s referral. “This is a rapidly growing area of healthcare, as more people recognise the importance of healthy gums and teeth,” says Diane Washington, a dental hygienist with over 20 years’ experience. “With an independent clinic like ours, you don’t need to be referred, just make an appointment and we’ll look after you.”
Diane and her sister, Debbie Proctor, herself a professional dental nurse, opened Mint in October, with the aim to offer
premium oral hygiene services alongside the best possible customer care. Services include scale and polish treatments of varying intensity, gum disease management, implant maintenance and expert teeth whitening. “Every treatment includes gum disease screening, oral cancer screening and follow-up advice tailored to the individual client,” says Diane. “Gum disease is linked to a number of other health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and dementia, so it’s crucial that it’s dealt with it at the very first signs.”
Bleeding when brushing is the most obvious sign of gum disease and, at Mint Dental Hygiene, many clients get in touch for this reason. Others simply want to keep their teeth and gums super clean as part of their routine personal hygiene and, for them, a visit to the hygienist is as essential as the hair salon or gym. The atmosphere and ambiance at Mint is certainly more akin to a spa than a dental clinic, with comfortable armchairs, calming décor, relaxing music and mood lighting.
“Patient care is at the forefront of everything we do,” says Debbie. “We know some people have been put off dental hygiene because they’ve suffered discomfort in the past, so we treat people extremely gently to build trust and make it an altogether more pleasant experience.”
It certainly seems to be working because Diane and Debbie are welcoming clients of all ages, including children, and have been doing so throughout lockdown. “As providers of healthcare services, we’re able to continue operating with the strictest of safety measures in place,” says Debbie. Furthermore, until the new year, they’re offering new clients an initial consultation and scale/polish, for just £45, reduced from £50. Which is good news for anyone who wants to keep their teeth and gums clean, healthy and, dare we say it, in mint condition. n

THE BEST YOU CAN BE Whatever Christmas and new year have in store, this professional clinic and salon will help you face the weeks ahead looking your absolute best writes Kate Ford. Photography: Kirsten Platt
N
obody knows what to expect this Christmas. However, this shouldn’t prevent us wanting to look our best, claims Liv Hindmoor, who runs her own professional clinic, 3D Aesthetics Ltd, in Barton. “When you look in the mirror and see yourself looking your very best, it really lifts the spirits, and we all need our spirits lifting just now,” says Liv. A fully accredited specialist in non-surgical aesthetics, Liv offers a range of clinically proven, non-invasive treatments for the body and face. Her facial treatments are always popular in the run-up to the festive season and 2020 has been no exception. “If you’re the kind of person who always wants to look your best, it doesn’t really
matter if Christmas is going to be quieter than usual,” says Liv. “My treatments make people look and feel better and more confident. They’re also an ideal escape, a bit of you-time, when you’ve been stuck at home for weeks. They’re the perfect Christmas present to yourself!”
MANY OF MY CLIENTS ARE PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE WHO LOVE THE SHARPNESS AND MENTAL CLARITY WHICH VITAMIN B12 DELIVERS Liv offers the famous HIFU, non-surgical facelift which uses ultrasound to target collagen and elastin cells, achieving fantastic results which last up to two years. Slightly less intense are her microdermabrasion treatments which polish and buff up the skin, leaving a flawless complexion and providing the perfect base for make-up. The clinic also provides a range of antiwrinkle treatments, injectables and dermal fillers, delivered by a registered nurse, as well as enhancing treatments including jawline shaping, cheek contouring, smileline lifting, non-surgical nose shaping and lip enhancements. In great demand at the moment are her vitamin B12 injections, which increase energy levels and strengthen the immune system. “Many of my clients are professional people who love the sharpness and mental clarity which vitamin B12 delivers,” says Liv.
“It’s hugely popular and perfect for a pre-Christmas boost.” Liv’s inch-loss treatments are always popular in the new year with people feeling the effects of festive over-indulgence. She uses the most advanced 3D Lipo technology available to break down fat cells, either by freezing, ultrasound or radiowaves, helping clients achieve their desired results. “A client recently lost six inches from her waistline and was absolutely thrilled,” says Liv. Before and after pictures can be seen on Liv’s Instagram and Facebook feeds, found at @3daestheticsltd, and are great for demonstrating the sorts of results which are achievable. “Results depend on many individual factors, and that’s why I offer fully bespoke treatments which are personally tailored to suit each client,” says Liv. Liv also offers gift vouchers for all treatments which can be purchased from the clinic. “People tell me constantly what a treat it is to come into the clinic for a treatment, so these vouchers are an excellent Christmas present idea.” n

the city. The UK Gift Card Market is worth £5.6 billon per year and Preston wants its share and so is launching its very own local currency gift card to help with the recovery of the centre. Several businesses have already signed up to the scheme and others such as local shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, leisure attractions, beauty services and hotels are now being urged to sign up to accept the card, for free, thanks to the BID funding the scheme. The concept is simple, the customer purchases a pre-loaded gift card from the card’s bespoke website, between £10 and £200, which they can then use themselves, or give as a present to a colleague, friend or family. The card can then be spent just like any other card allowing the customer to spread their spend across as many participating businesses as they wish, but

n recent months we have seen an increase in clients approaching us for advice following a separation from their partner or spouse. Many have stated that the pressures of the lockdown and the restrictions have negatively affected their relationship, resulting in the decision to separate. Separating from a partner is never easy and emotions will be running high. However, if there are young children there is the additional difficulty of trying to come to an agreement as to who the children should live with and how often they should spend time with the other parent.
cannot be reached, a referral should be made to mediation, with the view of issuing an application to court. In most cases, parents are required to attempt mediation before applying to the court, however, there are some circumstances where a parent may be exempt from attending. The only option available to parents if mediation is unsuccessful is to make an application to the Family Court. The court will encourage the parties to agree arrangements with the assistance of CAFCASS, who are family court advisors. CAFCASS will speak to both parents and may also speak to
For a parent who is no longer living with the children, they will see the time they spend with them drop significantly from every day, to perhaps a few days each week. On the other hand, the parent who now has primary care of the children will have the additional stress of being a single parent, and being solely responsible for all of the day-to-day tasks, where they would have previously had help from the other parent. In some cases, parents can come to an agreement regarding the arrangements for the children and they find that this works well for them. If it is not possible to come to an agreement regarding arrangements, it is advisable to seek independent legal advice as to the options available. A solicitor will explain and explore the options available when there are areas of dispute. The first step is to communicate with the other side, to see whether an agreement can be reached via negotiation. There is some level of compromise that must be made by both parents if an agreement is to be reached in this way. If it becomes apparent that an agreement
the children to ascertain their wishes and feelings. If the parents are still unable to agree, the matter will proceed to a final hearing where a judge will make a decision based on the facts that they have available to them, with the safety and welfare of the children being paramount. In addition, Forbes have also seen an increase in requests for advice in relation to contact arrangements in light of the current national and local restrictions on travel. The guidelines in respect of contact are, however, quite clear. Children can and should continue to move from household to household for the purposes of contact. Provided that the children, the other parent or any other member of their household are not in isolation and do not have symptoms of Covid-19, there is no reason why the current restrictions should prevent contact continuing. n

The BMW 1 Series is one of the most iconic cars on the road today. It hasn’t been around that long, but it’s helped the BMW bra nd into their new, affo rdable luxury era. In this, the third version of the sporty hatchback, there’s more space, it’s more economical and easier to handle than its predecessor. That’s all because the 1 Series now comes with either front or all-wheel-drive. Previously, it was rear-wheel-drive only, meaning when winter came, you’d be sliding around the road akin to wearing socks on a newly-varnished floor. Now, there’s still fun to be had, but you don’t constantly feel as though you’re wrestling a wild boar. There have been huge upgrades on the quality of the interior, too. The old 1 Series always felt a little dated; always behind the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. But you can’t say that now. The materials used feel high-quality, the infotainment system is easy to use and packed full of features, and there’s loads of tech and driving aids included to make sure yo u get the driving experience you want. Under the bonnet, there’s also a good range of engines to choose from. In petro l form, there’s the entry-level 118i - which is great for low-mileage, around-town driving - and then a faster, 306bhp M135i, which will cover 0-62mph in a little over four seconds. If you’d rather diesel, there’s three to pick from, including the top-of-the-range, 2.0-litre, four-wheel-drive model which is perfect for an economical school run.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT If you have Christmas shopping to do but hate the thought of seasonal crowds, this awardwinning retailer has the perfect solution, reports Kate Ford. Photography: Kirsten Platt
in the outdoor area. “There’s a fabulous festive atmosphere on our Late Nights,” says Becky Hughes, who looks after the marketing at Barton Grange. “With all the lights on and the displays looking their best, it really is the perfect time to visit.”
T
he run up to Christmas is always a busy time and this year, with everything else that is going on, it could prove quite a challenge for some. With presents to buy and homes to decorate, people are desperate to get out and browse but, understandably, they’re also keen to avoid crowded areas. Fortunately, one of Lancashire’s best-known Christmas retailers has come up with the ideal solution, enabling people to avoid daytime queues and shop in the evenings instead. This year, the multi award-winning Barton Grange Garden Centre is offering an unprecedented seven weeks of late-night shopping during November and December and, for the first time, the late nights include Saturdays.
The UK leader in garden centre Christmas displays, Barton Grange is a must-visit for fans of Christmas in the area. The whole centre is transformed into a magical winter wonderland of colours, lights, seasonal foliage and festive characters, guaranteed to wow visitors of all ages. Alongside the main themed displays, each with its own colour scheme, there’s a toy shop, a fabulous selection of festive dining accessories and tableware, a Christmas food collection and the famous Barton Grange Lemax Village displays. “There’s a lovely, relaxed feel to our Late Nights,” says Becky. “Whether buying
decorations and lights, or looking for Christmas presents, customers have time and space to browse. “For a fun family evening, a wind down after work or just for ticking some jobs off your list, it’s perfect.” Barton Grange is now open until 8pm Tuesday to Saturday, so you can avoid any daytime queues and shop in the evenings when it’s quieter. The garden centre is committed to remaining Covid secure at all times. The car park is operating at reduced capacity, to limit numbers in the building, and there are full safety measures in place to protect you while you shop. One of our favourite comments from our guests is that when they think of Gilpin, they think of love and laughter – both ours, and theirs, which is such a lovely compliment. At the heart of Gilpin is a passionate family and team, dedicated to creating lasting memories for our guests, who return time and again for romance, celebrations and escapes. For us, hospitality starts with a very warm welcome and ends with a friendly goodbye, with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences in between. We hope to welcome you to Gilpin soon.
If you’re looking for something to read in the meantime... BOOK REVIEW
If you can’t actually be at Gilpin Hotel in the Lake District, then being transported there is the next best thing. Instead of a dry, official history, owner John Cunliffe’s memoir charts how idyllic memories of holidaying at Gilpin with his grandmother just after the war turned into a slightly eccentric passion, and finally a thriving business. Many visitors have been called back to this enchanting spot, but none so powerfully as that small boy, who, following a career in the hotel business spanning New York, Jamaica and the City of London, could eventually, with his wife Chris, buy back Gilpin and create something truly special. Honest, funny and always clear-eyed about the sheer hard work that goes into this kind of obsession, and full of insights into the unique challenges of sustaining that rarest of spots – a great family-run hotel – Slightly Perfect does justice to Gilpin and a life in hospitality.

KEEP SAFE CYCLING The onset of winter shouldn’t stop you cycling. Ex-pro rider Jamie Burrow, Head of Product at Ribble Cycles provides some helpful tips to keep you safe and enhance your all-weather riding experience
B
eat the winter blues with these handy tips to keep you motivated, safe and dry during the months ahead.
Motivation
Although the long, dark and cold winter days can seem off-putting, finding motivation at this time of year is key to your coming season and sporting goals. Whether you are a full bloodied road racer, an occasional sportive rider, or simply want to increase your general fitness and wellbeing – the foundations to your training and eventual fitness are often built during the winter months. It is currently a trend to keep your winter miles wrapped
up in warm comfort using home trainers. Personally, I prefer to be outside and find the cold and dark aid my motivation. Just remember that starting in these conditions, things can only get better. You will notice your form increasing along with the longer brighter days, tempting you to go that bit further and faster.
Staying dry
Keeping dry in winter can simply mean staying comfortable, but also staying healthy. One of my biggest issues while racing as a professional was getting sick easily. The fitter we are often makes us more prone to silly illness as our immune system struggles
lifestyle
to keep up. I would always recommend having a rain jacket in your back pocket even if the forecast looks good. With typical UK weather it is so easy to get caught in a shower even just for a few minutes. It’s not even the getting wet that’s the issue. It’s staying wet and subsequently getting cold that causes the problem. • Take a rain jacket or gilet on all rides. • If you stop mid-ride for a coffee break put on a dry jacket instead of sitting around in damp clothes. • Good gloves, hat and overshoes are relatively cheap items that can really save your day if the weather turns bad. Although your body usually keeps warm from the heat generated during exercise, hands and feet don’t receive the same amount of circulation and are directly in the path of cold wind and freezing hands can be one of the worst experiences on a bike.
Staying safe
With many of us having to fit our winter riding into our daily commute or even after work or school. We are often forced to take on the traffic as well as darkness. Staying safe in these circumstances is crucial. Obviously, fitting lights to your bike is compulsory but there are a whole host of gadgets, gizmos and accessories to help keep you seen and safe in winter.
• Reflective clothing – night vision technology is now a common theme across winter clothing with select panels or even entire garments made from 360 degree, fully reflective fabrics that are activated by car head lights. I’ve been using one of these for three years now and wouldn’t ride without it during my winter commute.
• Bicycle lights have come on a long way since I started riding with the now classic, but not so powerful, battery operated lamps. We are now looking at USB chargeable, super powerful lights that could easily take on any car headlight with the level of brightness they offer. The best lights available are now graded by lumens, with around 200 lumens an acceptable output for a front light, although some manufacturers offer way over
69
2000 lumens, which is ideal for off road riding. • Reflective handlebar tape – this is an often-overlooked accessory.
Bike maintenance
Winter is also the least favourite time of year for your beloved bicycle. Rain, snow, salty roads and hidden pot-holes are just a few of the elements your bike has to cope with during the dark season. Taking care of your machine will prolong its life span and generally keep it in fit working order like yourself. • Check your tyres regularly for cuts and debris. Run slightly less pressure than you would in the summer for added grip in the wet. • Use 3-1 sprays on moving parts such as gears and chain after wet weather rides. (Ideally wash your bike with clean water after all wet rides and then apply 3-1 spray.)
• Keep your chain well oiled. This will keep your gears running smoothly especially in wet conditions. • Keep an eye on brake pad consumption as wet gritty roads will wear your brakes down faster than dry conditions. • It’s worthwhile investing in a simple DIY maintenance kit. n

That’s why when the call up came for NHS Volunteer Responders – Mark was one of the first to apply. Mark also has mental health and wellbeing training so was particularly keen to support those selfisolating with Check in and Chat calls. He says: “The feeling you get from helping someone who needs it is something you just can’t beat. I have actually struggled myself with mental health and I have found that volunteering as an NHS Volunteer Responder has helped me as much as I have helped others. It’s given me a reason to get out and do something that I know is meaningful which is incredibly rewarding. “I have a busy job with the Lancashire Fire Rescue Service, but whenever I can, I place myself ‘on-duty’ to help out with whatever I’m needed for. I had a long chat with a lovely man in his 90’s who had sadly lost his wife. I was humbled by the fact that he was able to open up to me and I think we both took comfort in having a friendly conversation while both living alone.” n Recruitment is now open visit: nhsvolunteerresponders.org.uk

Angharad Bentley, family law specialist at Farleys Solicitors, gives her advice to families navigating the festive period and further restrictions
A
t the time of writing, England has entered a four-week lockdown expected to end before the run up to Christmas. This time, educational establishments are set to remain open alongside essential businesses, but as with the uncertain nature of this whole pandemic, the situation could well be completely different by the time you are reading this. It’s difficult to predict what will happen next, making it an understandably tough time for families, particularly those who have taken the decision to separate this year and those who are divorcing and trying to manage care arrangements for their children via shared care.
CHILD ARRANGEMENTS FOR LOCKDOWN, CHRISTMAS AND BEYOND The Christmas holidays are already a big catalyst for divorce and childcare disputes and this is expected to be exacerbated by current events, creating a perfect storm. This can, however, be avoided by considering the simple tips below.
Try and keep to a routine
This advice has been given over and over again but keeping your child arrangements in a set routine as far as possible can avoid unnecessary stress, anxiety and disruption for the children. Of course, with the changing restrictions, this isn’t always possible but where it is, it definitely should be tried.
Stay informed on restrictions
Whenever new restrictions are introduced by the government, the position on child contact and shared care is usually clarified a short time later by Parliament on its website. This will state whether it is permitted for children to move between households as an exception to any no meeting up rule.
Keep the channels of communication open
It is important that whatever happens, you try and keep each other informed of any changes to your circumstances. For example, if you or your child/children are forced to isolate, you should inform your ex-partner at the earliest opportunity to discuss how this will affect their contact and for how long it is expected to last. If your child/children are unable to spend time with their other parent, arranging a phone call or video call can ensure they are still able to communicate.
Seek professional advice
If you are having difficulty reaching an agreement over child contact or need clarification on your legal rights, our family law team at Farleys are on hand to discuss your situation. Throughout the pandemic, we have assisted hundreds of families in Lancashire and across the North West with their legal matters and are committed to continuing to do so. n

OUTDOOR FUN! Sarah Varley speaks to Roger Wolstenholme about Ribble Valley E-Bikes, a new business offering a fantastic way to enjoy the local area. Photography: Kirsten Platt
“T
he idea of hiring electric bikes in the Ribble Valley came from wanting to give people the opportunity to access this amazing cycling countryside,” says Ribble Valley E-Bikes owner Roger Wolstenholme. “The Ribble Valley is one of the country’s most beautiful landscapes and e-bikes are the perfect way for everyone to enjoy the stunning scenery, towns and villages. The option to hire opens up this brilliant activity to more people and offers a great day out on your doorstep.” E-bikes make light work of hills and allow you to cover more ground easily. Hire for a half day, full day or several days
YOU CAN COME AND TRY OUT THE BIKES SO YOU KNOW IT IS THE RIGHT BIKE FOR YOU – WE TAKE THE HIRE CHARGE OFF ANY PURCHASE if you are visiting the area or want to make the most of a holiday at home. “Anyone can easily cover 25 miles in half a day on an e-bike – it’s a fabulous way to spend time outdoors,” enthuses Roger. Ribble Valley E-Bikes is located at the old garage in picturesque Dunsop Bridge. “It’s the perfect base, surrounded by quiet country lanes, so you don’t need to worry if you’re nervous or haven’t cycled for years,” says Roger, who has a new workshop for maintenance and repairs.

“It is such a popular area – it was famously Bradley Wiggins’ training ground. If you can ride a push bike, you can ride an e-bike”. E-bikes are restricted to age 14+ for road use because they’re motor-powered so regular children’s bikes are available to hire too. E-bikes are also available to purchase online or in-store. “Our range offers quality and reliability at a sensible price, including VOLT commuter and hybrid e-bikes, affordable touring e-bikes from Raleigh, and road and mountain e-bikes from Lapierre,” explains Roger. “We are part of the cycle to work scheme and our location means you can come and try out the bikes so you know it is the right bike for you – we take the hire charge off any purchase.”
Ribble Valley E-Bikes set you up with self-guided routes and are partnering with local pubs and accommodations including Browsholme Hall, the Spread Eagle at Sawley and the Red Pump at Bashall Eaves to combine scenic routes, bike storage and charging facilities with exceptional hospitality. With plenty of safe social distancing and all Covid-compliance measures in place, hiring an e-bike offers healthy outdoor fun while staying in your local area. You can book online and the hire bikes from British manufacturer VOLT include hybrid-style and road oriented e-bikes, which are ideal for enjoying quiet country lanes. Helmets are included and panniers are available to take a picnic, but there are plenty of picturesque pubs, tearooms and cafes to visit on your e-bike adventures. n

THE CENTRE OF THE
COMMUNITY
O
ver the last few months, Booths in Garstang has become even more of a focal point in the local area. This year, having a traditional family Christmas will be on everyone’s list, with people wanting to celebrate with good food and drink and experience the spirit of the season at home. Like its other stores, Booths Garstang played a major part in supporting the community during the early days of Covid-19. “One thing that stood us in good stead,” said store manager Adam Slater, “is the relationship we have with our great local suppliers, including Dewlay, Bowland Meats, Lathams and Lancaster Brewery to name a few, who were able to react quickly to the changes that were constantly changing, so we were able to maintain the best possible availability. In return, we supported them by promoting specific ranges in store, it was a win win combination.” Something the business is proud of is how much innovation it has been able to achieve and how quickly it has been able to introduce it during lockdown. It launched its click and collect operation back in April to help shoppers through the coronavirus crisis. Staff take payment over the phone and goods can be collected in store or delivered to the customer’s vehicle. It also set up an emergency delivery service for the local community by delivering essential food parcels within a three-mile radius of the store. Booths has made it easy for customers to give back to the local community while shopping, with its Buy One Give One Free initiative. For every qualifying item that
This Christmas will be different for many, but one thing that will remain the same is Booths’ ethos to provide quality produce served by the best staff and customer service. Photography: Roger Moore customers purchase, they can pick one up free of charge to donate to the store’s food bank. Customers have also been able to take advantage of its partnership with John Lewis, whereby anyone who orders off the department store’s website can collect from Booths in Garstang.
IN A TIME WHERE PEOPLE ARE WORRIED, JUST TO BE WELCOMED WITH A HELLO AND A BIT OF A CHAT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE TO SOMEONE’S DAY The supermarket is renowned for its personal touch and this became more prominent. “In a way,” said Adam, “it feels like we’ve become even more part of the community. We’ve had someone on our front door greeting people as they enter since Covid-19 started. In a time where people are worried, just to be welcomed with
a hello and a bit of a chat makes all the difference to someone’s day. “However, we couldn’t have done it without our fantastic staff,” added Adam. As well as several long serving employees, it has recruited temporary staff where retail isn’t their first profession. “A travel agent has joined us along with a professional ballet dancer, to name a couple. They are a great asset to our team as they bring with them their own skillset.” Booths has once again excelled itself this year for Christmas food and drink. The Booths Christmas book is now available in store or online featuring amazing platters, succulent meats, party foods and delicious puddings all from local suppliers and further afield. What’s more it has just won the Wine and Spirit Retailer of theYear Award. Booths is so much more than a supermarket. Established since 1847 and still going strong, it must be doing something right. Treat yourself this Christmas, you deserve it. n

t seems straightforward enough, if you have a health problem, you consult your GP and a course of treatment is prescribed to make you better. Unfortunately, though, for some people, it is anything but straightforward and, despite everyone’s best efforts, they are still living with the pain, discomfort or worry of a lingering health issue. CONFIDENCE IS KEY After 100 years, Moorland School is more dedicated to building exceptional futures than ever before
T
his year, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of Moorland School’s operation, coinciding with a decade of achievement and leadership under its current headteacher. As with any anniversary it provokes thoughts of not only celebration but also self-reflection. Self-reflection is where Moorland are focusing their efforts. Despite a complicated year for everyone, Moorland School once again achieved Value Added Scores that far outstrips local, regional and national averages, seeing GSCE, BTEC and A-level results topping the region with 100 per cent pass rates. The school is very keen to push forward maintaining this high standard across the board into the next 100 years. Determined not to stand still and let opportunities pass by, Headteacher
Jonathan Harrison says that the whole school operation has doubled down on improving the services they offer even further, highlighting improved communication as just one consideration.
OPERATING AS A SMALLER SCHOOL, WE CAN REALLY GO TO EXTRAORDINARY EXTENTS TO PROVIDE A VERY PERSONALISED SERVICE Moorland School has always prided itself on its family ethos ensuring happiness and social stability for its students as well as forward thinking relationships with parents and carers. Determined to improve this further, they’ve taken the necessary steps to embrace technology and push themselves to the forefront of private schools. Moorland is aiming to deliver a service that goes above and beyond the normal level of interaction provided to parents and carers – something they’ve determined is paramount to another 100 years of delivering academic excellence from a non-selective pool of students. Jonathan states: “We are already known as a school with a great reputation for parent/carer school relationships, but we have to acknowledge there is always room for some improvement. We will provide our parents and carers with an unparalleled level of interaction during term time. Operating as a smaller school, we can really go to extraordinary extents to provide a very personalised service.”
Expanding on just how they plan to deliver this, Jonathan didn’t want to give all the secrets away, but explains: “Some of our existing parents have seen the start of this already during our new term. We will be delivering more regular updates and content to parents via several social and direct channels throughout each term, some of which will be heavily influenced by our new website that is launching very soon.” Moorland School is currently operating on an ‘Every Day is an Open Day’ policy, meaning that you can book an appointment for a guided tour to fit your schedule, any day of the week. This allows you to experience the day to day activity of the school as part of the Moorland family – and as part of the ‘Moorland difference’ – a sentiment and ethos the school proudly stands behind, resulting in students who leave Moorland School having achieved academic excellence and are happy confident individuals. n To book a visit please contact Admissions Manager, Carl Lightbown

f 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that in challenging times there is nothing so valuable as the support and friendship of a close community. Nowhere is that embodied more than at Rossall School in Fleetwood, one of the country’s leading independent schools for boys and girls from three months to 18 years old. Rossall prides itself on its supportive, family-like environment and the unrivalled facilities offered by its stunning campus. A recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report rated the quality of pupils’ personal development as excellent and commented on the real sense of camaraderie between pupils. “The sense of community really comes into focus at this time of year,” says Head of Marketing, Nancy Fielden. “Every pupil will have plenty of opportunities to get involved in festive events and enjoy some fun in the run up to Christmas.” Preparations are already underway for socially distanced events such as carol concerts, drama performances and nativities, which will be live-streamed to audiences watching at home. Following the Christmas break, pupils return in January full of excitement for
WE HAVE SOME REALLY EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO. ONE OF THESE IS THE LAUNCH OF THE SCHOOL’S NEW ELITE FOOTBALL PROGRAMME FOR GIRLS One of these is the launch of the school’s new Elite Football Programme for Girls, the first of its kind in the country, which will sit alongside the existing programme for boys. Delivered in partnership with Fleetwood Town Football Club, the programme enables talented youngsters to receive first class, professional football coaching alongside their outstanding education. “The women’s game has progressed so much in recent years,” says Nancy. “This programme demonstrates the school’s commitment to be a leading player in delivering equality of opportunity
the country’s leading youth teams. Chelsea defender and England Lioness, Millie Bright, who opened the school’s new £4 million Sports Centre in 2019, is an ambassador for the programme and will provide some mentoring and coaching as well as giving guest lectures. Rossall’s academic reputation speaks for itself, with pupils excelling in GCSEs, A levels and the International Baccalaureate, but the school is determined to encourage a fully rounded educational experience. Says Nancy: “Whatever your child’s interests are, there will be something for them to enjoy in our diverse programme of extra-curricular activities. These, combined with our outstanding academic record, enable all our pupils to reach their full potential whilst getting the very most from this dynamic school community.” n

alina spent her teenage years in London and studied her way across the north of England, finally settling in Lancashire. She studied for a degree in engineering but decided it wasn’t the career for her and following the completion of her degree pursued an art-based path instead. Salina is no stranger to education, putting herself through an HND in design crafts in Manchester and then studying a blacksmith course in Swindon. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do,” said Salina, “but I knew I enjoyed working with metals.”
I DIDN’T JUST WANT SOMETHING THAT WAS JUST A LAMPSHADE OR A GLASS JAR, I ALSO WANTED IT TO BE A PIECE OF FUNCTIONAL ART
Salina Somalya, an artist based in Garstang, has always had a passion for art. From an early age, her Asian and African cultural heritage inspired her creativity. Spending her formative years in southern Africa, she remembers watching the roadside artisans making wonderful objects out of a range of materials from copper to tyres
She applied to the then North West Arts Board, as at the time they were setting up a scheme to promote artists within the north west, particularly Lancashire. “It was a two-year scheme, based at Myerscough College,” said Salina “but I ended up staying there for seven years becoming their resident artist.” She left in 2009 and began working independently, predominately working on commissions for hospitals and schools and carrying out workshops in schools, which she still loves doing. It was at this time her daughter came along and art took a back seat for a while. She rekindled her passion for art in 2013 and wanted to look at developing a

different stream of work. She had always been interested in plastics and went back to education again at UCLan, completing it in 2019, this time studying an MA in Surface Pattern and Textiles. “I’d always been interested in plastics, their similar qualities to metal and the ways in which they can be worked to develop a wonderful array of objects,” she said “And how we can balance this with helping to make the environment a better place by researching what we can do with waste plastic. So, I started looking at plastics, plastic bags and toys, which led me onto what children use that are safe to use in other contexts, what do they do when they get rid of things they no longer want and what can we do to stop it falling onto ever growing land fill sites.” She went on to develop designs for lighting through her MA utilising as many recycled or repurposed parts as possible and she approached independent retailer James Kok Lighting about supplying some unique light fittings made out of recycled plastic. “I didn’t just want something that was just a lampshade or a glass jar, I also wanted it to be a piece of functional art. The lamps are still early on the design process, but James is looking at stocking some and I’m also going to exhibit at Arteria with Gallery 23 in Lancaster between January and May 2021. So where does Salina get her inspiration from? “I look all around me, but specifically at nature. I like the simplicity of things, how we can connect things together and how they can be interpreted into a surface pattern.
I LIKE THE SIMPLICITY OF THINGS, HOW WE CAN CONNECT THINGS TOGETHER AND HOW THEY CAN BE INTERPRETED INTO A SURFACE PATTERN I want objects to be three-dimensional and have a sense of tactility.” Salina would love to further this work by taking it into schools and showing the young people what can be achieved with their waste or throw-away items. It is a way to engage them about the environment as well as experiencing how to create from something and nothing. “This is what I love about the school visits, being able to show
89
the children what you are doing and them being able to touch and feel it. It’s great for the children,” said Salina. “Their creativity really comes out and they get so much out of it.” While school workshops will be on hold for a while Salina is carrying on working on individual commissions. Her pubic and private sector commissions include sitespecific artwork for several NHS Trusts, schools and other public bodies. “All my artworks are unique depending on what the customer wants and are underpinned by the synthesis of art and engineering, combining my varied education with my love of creating something form a spark of an idea.” Her artwork is certainly impressive, using texture, colour and pattern, she designs her artwork with her clients in mind. Salina is keen to keep on learning and there are still some materials, which she hasn’t yet worked with. “I’d like to look at resin and other materials that have an elastic quality. I’m lucky to live in an area which gives me so much in the way of inspiration and ideas and it’s just a case of how I’m going to achieve it.” n

NEW GP SURGERY FOR WHITTLE-LE-WOODS
NEW SERVICE LAUNCHED
The plans for the site include a modern GP surgery with nine consulting rooms, three treatment rooms and an onsite car park. The new development will replace the current Whittle GP surgery and provide services for existing and new patients. The build is due for completion in early 2022. The construction is planned to be carbon-neutral with solar power, and the use of energy efficient materials. The scheme will also benefit from electric car charging points.
It’s been all-systems-go at the RSPB’s Ribble Discovery Centre at Fairhaven Lake, Lytham as the long-established attraction gets ready for a major makeover thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The visitor centre is being completely refurbished along with other facilities and activities at Fairhaven Lake, as part of a Fylde Council project which has already seen the development of the new sea wall and promenade at Granny’s Bay.
MINT Dental Hygiene has opened its doors in times of need. Where dentists are struggling to provide the necessary routine dental hygiene treatments at this present time, MINT Dental Hygiene is a Direct Access Hygiene Clinic meaning clients do not have to have seen a dentist to benefit from its services. It has gone above and beyond when designing its new clinic to ensure all necessary policies and procedures are in place to provide a ‘COVID SAFE’ environment.

THE FAB ‘4’ Following the unveiling of the new BMW 4, Paul Agnew is cockpit companion on a thrilling test drive in a car that has power and charisma in equal measure. Photography: Roger Moore
I
t was like attending a glittering film premiere or applauding the arrival of an iconic piece of art at a gallery – either way, it was a red carpet event. That wonderful moment when a hush settles across the room, excitement spreads throughout the privileged onlookers and expectations soar. And then the collective gasp as the curtain rises or the wraps come off. The wow factor! This particular ‘moment’ came on a damp autumn day in mid-Lancashire when the new BMW 4 was unveiled. BMW want it to be known quite simply as ‘The 4’, but may I be so bold as to suggest an extra word. For this is undisputedly The ‘Fab’ 4, a car with beauty, presence, style and a desire to please, entertain and excite.
I was lucky enough to have first dibs as cockpit companion in the magnificent BMW 420i M Sport Coupé, crammed with instant kerb appeal and genuine charisma.
THE SLOPING ROOFLINE IS A PERFECT FRAME FOR THE MASCULINE, MUSCULAR PROPORTIONS, SLEEK CONTOURS AND ELEGANT LINES OF THIS VISION OF SPORTINESS Just the colour – a stunning metallic Arctic Race Blue – was mesmerising enough with the distinctive front kidney grille, short overhangs, slender pillars and frameless windows adding a sense of athleticism at every turn. Pause. Let’s just dwell for a moment on
the grille, a more vertical interpretation of the signature kidney shape and one intended to invoke classic BMWs, such as the pre-war 328. The BMW design experts reckon the bold grille makes the 4 Series look ‘more emotional’ and, to be fair, it is the brand’s most prominent design icon. The grille links to the very heritage of BMW. It should stand out – it does stand out.
The sloping roofline is a perfect frame for the masculine, muscular proportions, sleek contours and elegant lines of this vision of sportiness. And the very bravado of the exterior extends to the inside. After being greeted by the rich comfort of Vernasca leather seats and an ultra-smart digital cockpit, you’ll find – amongst a lengthy list of superb features – ambient lighting, 3-zone air
motors conditioning and an acoustic windscreen. Premium connectivity is a given, with a touchscreen 10.25” central information display including a suite of new digital services, including connected music. If hi-tech is your thing, you can add the head-up display as an optional extra. It’s a thing of wonder, projecting information relevant to your journey directly into your field of vision on the windscreen.
YOU CAN ADD THE HEAD-UP DISPLAY AS AN OPTIONAL EXTRA. IT’S A THING OF WONDER, PROJECTING INFORMATION DIRECTLY INTO YOUR FIELD OF VISION The content shows not only your speed, but also adds the current speed limit and the upcoming speed limit. You can sit back to simply concentrate on enjoying the drive and the head-up actually changes colour to keep you inside the law. There is plenty of power and capability and you still achieve around 40mpg which, all things considered, is not at all shabby. The drive, particularly the finely-tuned steering, is first rate and the looks are great too, with upgraded 18” M light alloy double-spoke style wheels. M rear spoiler, advanced sport braking and adaptive suspension also come as standard too. Very much a car of the moment, but also a car of the future with intelligent voice assistance, smartphone integration and reversing assistant. If you need it in a car, it’s here. Trust me, you’ll want ‘4’ nothing. n Model options include the: M Sport, M Sport Pro Edition and M440i xDrive

GIRLS TOGETHER
Women in Sport is a charity which was founded in 1984 with the aim of giving women and girls throughout the UK the chance to experience and benefit from getting involved in sport
T
he charity researches and educates ways in which girls and women can stay engaged with sport and physical activity at key stages throughout their lives, when they may be more at risk of losing interest, such as puberty, going to university, pregnancy and later on in life, in menopause. We have recently seen in the media news of bullying in sports such as gymnastics and dance such as ballet, and so the charity aims to change the culture of sport so that
sexism and discrimination become a thing of the past. One of Women in Sport’s latest campaigns was to encourage mums and daughters to get active together to help build and improve their relationship, both with each other and with exercise.
WE’VE HEARD THAT WOMEN ARE CHANGING THEIR MINDSETS AND WANTING TO PRIORITISE SPORT AND EXERCISE As a mum it is always difficult to put yourself first when you have a busy family life. Only 32 per cent of women said they couldn’t prioritise exercise during lockdown as they had too much to do for others (Women in Sport, Lockdown Research, 2020). So, the aim of the campaign is to
inspire mums and daughters to be active and find something they enjoy doing together. Currently only 42 per cent of teenage girls meet physical activity guidelines and just under a third of girls (32 per cent) are inactive, engaging in less than average of 30 minutes activity per day (Sport England Active Lives Children and Young People Survey Academic Year 2018/2019). But what kind of things can you do together? In Lancashire we’re lucky that we’re not too far from the countryside, beaches or parks, so the obvious one is to go for a walk and you can have a good catch up at the same time. But why not try something different? There are many socially distanced dance classes you can join, some offer a free trial lesson to see if you like it before signing up. Or why not take up a couch to 5k? Having a running buddy will help you
sport
motivate each other. Set yourself a goal and encourage each other along the way. Get on your bike. The first lockdown saw a massive increase in the number of people cycling. Not only is it a great way to keep fit, but there are now an increased number of cycle routes to suit every level of cyclist. From off road biking on Preston’s Guild Wheel, to a leisurely ride along the Lancaster canal. What’s more there are several women only cycling groups making it a sociable activity to meet new people at the same time. Stephanie Hilborne, CEO of Women in Sport says: “As we come out of the second lockdown, we should not seek to return to the way it was. We’ve heard that women
95
are changing their mindsets and wanting to prioritise sport and exercise.” And that can only be a good thing. Try and establish exercise early on in your child’s life. Girls are traditionally less physically active than boys. However, if they are already used to walking and doing activities as a family, they will be more inclined to get involved in different types of sport as they get older and spend less time on their phones.
THE AIM OF THE CAMPAIGN IS TO INSPIRE MUMS AND DAUGHTERS TO BE ACTIVE AND FIND SOMETHING THEY ENJOY DOING TOGETHER Encourage them to try new sports classes at school, whatever it is. They won’t like everything and they won’t always be good at it, but it’s a chance for them to find out. As women get older, around menopause, they can start to put on weight and that and age may become a barrier to not doing anything, so it’s equally important that daughters try to encourage their mums to get some regular exercise, at least 150 minutes per week. Being active together, whether inside or out, can be a positive and bonding experience. So, take time out for yourself and your daughter and make time together. n

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS LOCALLY Christmas is almost upon us and in these uncertain times, it will be a time we want to enjoy with our family household and what could be better than being round the dinner table eating fabulous food and tasting delicious drink
W
hether you’re all about tradition or looking for a Christmas dinner with a difference, cooking for the family on Christmas Day should be an enjoyable experience, so get everyone involved. Don’t just order everything on-line, shop local and you can find some fabulous produce right on your doorstep. Shopping local can be a lot less stressful than battling the crowds in a busy supermarket. Visit your butcher. Their produce is likely to have come from a nearby farm, thereby less food miles and it will be fresher. Not only that, butchers can have some great
recipe ideas and cooking tips. You will also get different cuts of meat which you can’t necessarily get in the larger stores. You will be boosting the local economy and saving someone’s job. At a time when we all need employment security and to keep our towns and villages open and busy, we all need to support this. Some places such as Penwortham, Lytham and Garstang thrive on their independent shops as they also give people a reason to visit, so this in turn helps the tourist industry. You are more likely to find some unique Christmas presents by shopping locally. If your local farmers markets are open, pay a visit, you’ll get great ideas for foodie
gifts from homemade cakes, chocolates to local beers and gins. Local business owners are passionate about what they do and so are more than happy to go the extra mile to ensure you’re a happy customer and enjoy getting to know their customers. Word of mouth goes a long way in recommending a place to go where you know you are going to be guaranteed good customer service with a smile. If you are not sure where you can find local producers, take a look at the useful website bigbarn.co.uk/places/Lancashire/ Chorley/Farm-Shop where you can type in your postcode and it will highlight local food producers near to you, including Sprout Hall Farm, Heskin Quality Butchers, Honeywells Farm Shop, Pauls Farm Shop and Owd Barn Country Store to name just a few. Many of these businesses are family owned and have generations of experience and lots of stories to tell. Have a think about what you want to eat over Christmas and make a list. You may have to pre order with your local butcher. Don’t just think turkey. Gressingham duck, beef or salmon make great alternatives. However you choose to spend your Christmas, think local and you will be helping out a friend, neighbour, colleague and keeping the economy growing.

Here’s a couple of recipe ideas for the festive season.
97
Method Preheat the oven to 200°C. Scrub potatoes clean and then cook in a pan of boiling water over a medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked through. Trim the green beans and add to the pan for final two minutes. Drain the potatoes and green beans. Halve and add the tomatoes. Add the olives and half of the basil, along with 1/2 a tablespoon of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and toss together. Tip into a roasting tray, shake into an even layer and place the salmon fillets on top. Add 1/2 a teaspoon of olive oil and squeeze in half the juice of one lemon and season with salt and pepper. Cut four slices from the remaining lemon half and lay on top of each fillet. Roast for 10 minutes, or until cooked through.
SIMPLE SALMON AND VEGETABLE TRAY BAKE (credit Lancashirefarm.com) Ingredients 400g baby new potatoes 200g green beans 1 bunch of fresh basil 200g cherry tomatoes 10 black olives (pitted)
olive oil 4 salmon fillets (skin on) 11/2 lemons 1 /2 tsp dijon mustard 4 tbsp Lancashire Farm Greek Style yogurt
For the basil and mustard yogurt, bash the remaining basil leaves in a pestle and mortar with a pinch of salt. Peel and add the garlic and bash again. Scrape the mixture into a bowl and add the Dijon mustard, 4 tablespoons of Lancashire Farm Greek Style Yogurt and the juice from half of the remaining lemon. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and mix well. Spoon the yogurt on top of the salmon tray bake and serve. Method Rub the duck legs with the salt, thyme, juniper and garlic and marinate for 3 hours. Pre-heat the oven to 120°C / fan 110°C / gas mark 1. Brush the salt off the duck and then place onto a baking tray and cover with the melted duck fat or oil. Gently cook in the oven for 11/2 hours until tender. It is then best left overnight to cool. For the pickled red cabbage, half and quarter the cabbage, remove the large stem and finely slice the leaves. Add the cabbage to a colander and salt well, then leave to rest for 1 hour. Then wash all the salt away thoroughly and pat dry.
CONFIT DUCK WITH PICKLED RED CABBAGE AND STICKY FIG GLAZE (credit Booths) Ingredients 2 duck legs 200ml vegetable oil or melted duck fat 6 cloves garlic, sliced 4 juniper berries, crushed 4 sprigs fresh thyme 25g salt For the cabbage 200g red cabbage 1 star anise 1 /4 tsp allspice
200ml cider vinegar 1 bay leaf 3 whole cloves 1 /4 tsp whole black peppercorns 1 /4 cinnamon stick Pinch of dried chilli flakes 100g sugar 10g coarse sea salt For the glaze 25g fig jam 1 tbsp red wine
Place the vinegar and sugar in a pan and bring to the boil. Place all the dry ingredients in a pestle and mortar and grind, then add to the vinegar and simmer for 5 minutes. Place the cabbage in a suitable sealable container, large enough to add the pickling liquor to. Pass the liquid through a sieve over the cabbage. The liquor should just cover the cabbage. Heat up the fig jam and red wine and keep warm. To assemble the dish, remove the duck from the fat and place onto a roasting tray and bake in a hot oven 220°C / fan 200°C / gas mark 7 for 10 minutes to crisp up the skin. Brush the skin with the fig glaze for the last 2 minutes. Top with more fig glaze and sit on top of the pickled red cabbage. n

SPIRITS OF CHRISTMAS
A
sense of community is one of the positive aspects of this unpredictable year, as more of us have treasured local businesses and their commitment to producing quality products on our doorstep. Brindle Distillery, the picturesque home of the award-winning Cuckoo Gin, embodies this ethos. A family business, based at Holmes Farm near Chorley, it is a welcoming community hub and the chance to shop, or grab a coffee in spacious, safe surroundings. Outside lockdown its Cuckoo’s Nest Bar offers warm hospitality, while its Workshop Experiences and distillery tours have won rave reviews on Trip Advisor. The business supports local and national charities – Cuckoo Solace Gin has so far raised £26k for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and it donates to the renovations of Rivington Terrace Gardens whose Gaultheria berries are included in the limited edition Sloedown Gin.
There are plenty of ways to share Cuckoo Gin this festive season. Stephanie Sparrow reports and this Christmas, Mark and the team have created fabulous presents. “We have launched the Luxury Cuckoo ‘Wow’ box,” says Mark. “It has two compartments which can be filled with a combination of our products, and even our beautifully designed glasses. You can design a bespoke gift and be sure that the recipient will say ‘wow’.”
THE GINS ARE EVEN DISTILLED WITH WATER FROM OUR OWN SPRING ON THE FARM. THE WATER HAS A CLARITY AND QUALITY WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE PROCESS
From grain to honey, home-grown and locally sourced ingredients are used to craft the award-winning Cuckoo range. “The gins are even distilled with water from our own spring on the farm,” says master distiller and director Mark Long. “The water has a clarity and quality which are essential to the process.” Gin as good as this just has to be shared,
For smaller gifts why not try Cuckoo Christmas Crackers? “They have a 5cl bottle and surprise voucher inside,” says Mark. Some even contain a ‘golden ticket’ for the Workshop Experience. The crackers, which can be purchased individually or as a set of six, make witty table settings, tree decorations, or Secret Santa gifts – within age restrictions of course. Shopping locally makes Christmas shopping easy. Gifts can be collected direct from the
distillery with its free parking, delivered to specific postcodes in the area, or posted directly to the recipient. There are ideas for non-gin lovers too, they can enjoy Cuckoo Sundowner Rum or Spring Vodka (also made from the Holmes Farm spring).
Other unique presents include a range of gift vouchers and e-cards for either the Cuckoo distillery tour or Workshop Experience (which includes the opportunity to make your own gin). “Our Sloedown Gin was inspired by the events of 2020, and with the vouchers we are offering something to look forward to in 2021,” says Mark. n

HOW TO CHOOSE AN ARCHITECT ZMA explain why it is vital to meet potential architects in order for them to understand you, your project and your priorities
W
e have been approached by potential clients in many ways including word of mouth, recommendations from past clients or builders, Google search, and the RIBA Find an Architect service.
Selecting the right architect for your project
It is important that you meet your architect prior to making your selection, rather than making your decision based on costs only. You will work with your architect for a number of months, sometimes over 12 months from the design phase until the end of the construction, and some clients will continue working with their architect for years building a working relationship to use on all of their future projects. It is therefore important that you feel you
will be able to work together for a long period of time.
YOUR ARCHITECT NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND YOU, YOUR FAMILY OR BUSINESS, THE WAY YOU WANT TO USE YOUR BUILDING AND WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE You need to like your architect, as you will welcome them into your life, home or business and you need to be on the same page. Your architect needs to understand you, your family or business, the way you want to use your building and what you want to achieve. They need to consider your taste, your likes and dislikes, and your priorities and you need to feel that you can ask questions if you are unsure or
if you do not understand. You will get the best out of working with an architect if you are open-minded, allow them to guide you, take their advice and you are both patient with each other. If you are choosing your architect from a shortlist, then have a look at their previous designs. Do you like their style? Do they create the wow-factor? Were they enthusiastic about your project? When evaluating multiple fee proposals, check if they are a true comparison of services. Make sure you understand the whole process with regards to what is and what is not included. Remember, it isn’t always about choosing the cheapest quotation, as you get what you pay for. If you haven’t found an architect through a friend, family or colleague recommendation, then view their testimonials, ask to speak to their previous clients, or see some of their drawings or portfolio. So, meet the architect, ask them questions, make sure you like them, and they understand you and your requirements. If you have a project in mind, contact a member of our team for a free consultation to discuss how to begin your dream project. n
