Magazines Editor Welcome to our first edition of 2021 Whilst last year was unprecedented in many ways due to Covid-19 and things didn’t look set to change for a while, the main focus for Lancashire continues to be to support the local economy and the many fantastic independent retailers, restaurants and leisure facilities that Lancashire is proud of, as lockdown slowly unfolds. This issue is another great read. I chat to the daughter of the legendary comedian and entertainer Bobby Ball about life with her dad and the new memorial statue that is being placed in the grounds of Lowther Pavilion in his honour. Blackpool born Eleanor Cardwell is now one of the top England Netball players. She tells of her love of the game and her sporting career history to date. Everyone is desperate for a holiday, but we find out how travel is changing for 2021/22 and where the key destinations will be to visit. I chat to Preston businesswoman Vinny Scarantino, who after being made redundant from mobile telecommunications in 2006, decided to delve into her passion for cars and start her own business hiring out VW Beetles. But despite the pandemic, has seen her company diversify and go from strength to strength. And finally, this issue will be my final edition as Editor as I step down to concentrate on other commitments. It has been a pleasure writing for the magazine over the last 10 years and would like to thank you all for your continued support. Happy reading! Tracy Hargreaves Editor

Verified Customer Feedback

A turnkey service from Kitchen Design Centre When Nick and Sue extended their Bowdon home, they required a company who could provide a turnkey service and manage the project from start to finish. Kitchen Design Centre provided a one stop shop for the couple: handling everything from building work to the kitchen design and installation, flooring and all plumbing and electrical work. Initially they shopped around but found a national kitchen retailer to be pushy and pestering and a local kitchen company, who charged for designs, to be less than impressive as they failed to listen to what the couple wanted. This contrasted greatly with Kitchen Design Centre. Visiting the Failsworth showroom Nick and Sue were immediately impressed with designer Roger Astin who took a real interest in what they had to say and what they wanted. They found the showroom to be particularly impressive and gained a great deal of inspiration from the multiple displays. Roger’s site visit was helpful as they agreed which walls would be removed and how the space would flow. His superior knowledge and experience of handling similar projects was evident and Nick and Sue felt confident that Kitchen Design Centre was the perfect company to see the project through to completion. Because Kitchen Design Centre handled all aspects of the project it ran smoothly, even when it was affected by the Coronavirus pandemic first lockdown. Nick and Sue are delighted with the finished space and the whole Kitchen Design Centre team: “Everyone at Kitchen Design Centre was fantastic. We love the design and it’s the intricate details like the boxing in of the units that really makes it. We were delighted that they could handle the project from start to finish and we rated every member of the team. We can’t recommend Kitchen Design Centre enough and have already recommended them to friends.”

To read more about how we designed this kitchen and to view the video tour of it visit: www.kitchendesigncentre.com

Designer Roger Astin says, “This project is perfect for showing how our approach differs to other kitchen companies. Many just look at an existing room space and explore the options. We can work in this way or we can develop the space and enhance it, introducing features such as false walls and bulkheads which result in a project knitting together more neatly and in a more interesting way that is aesthetically superior.”

ROCK ON TOMMY Most people will have heard that saying as a catchphrase from a very talented comedian, actor, entertainer, who sadly passed away last year, writes Tracy Hargreaves

S

eventy-six-year-old Bobby Ball died in October last year, after being diagnosed with Covid-19. An entertainer through and through, I spoke to his daughter Joanne about the man off screen and the man who was her dad. Robert Harper, or Bobby Ball, as he was known in the profession, had been an entertainer from as young as eight years old when Bobby and his sister used to sing on the stage of local clubs. They were soon discovered and got a contract with the BBC singing on the radio and in the evenings their parents would take them round the working men’s clubs to perform. By the age of 14, he was regularly performing seasons at theatres around the north west.

IT’S A BIT IRONIC REALLY AS HE ALWAYS JOKED ABOUT HAVING A STATUE OF HIMSELF AND SAID HE WOULD NEVER GET ONE He married his first wife in 1964 and had two sons, Robert and Darren, who are now comedians and entertainers in their own right under the name ‘the Harper brothers’, but it was his second wife Yvonne, with whom he spent more than 50 years with, who he doted on. They went on to have a daughter, Joanne.

Originally from Oldham, Yvonne and Bobby and soon all the family moved to Lytham St Annes, where they lived for the last 25 years and called their second home. Joanne said: “My dad was an amazing person. He loved Lytham. It was close to Blackpool where he performed regularly and everybody knew him. He was very much part of the community. He would give advice to anyone who asked for it and even those who didn’t, be happy to open any new shops or events in the town, do lots of charity shows and was a patron of the Lowther Pavilion. He literally would give the shirt off his back to help someone. He wasn’t just my dad he was my friend and we had a special relationship.” But Bobby’s success didn’t come easily. While he was performing at an early age, he took up welding so he would have a trade, but his showbusiness side never stopped. Bobby used to sing and was a drummer in a band. He met Tommy Cannon in the welding factory, along with another colleague and for a while there was three of them. “I remember my dad telling me that when they were queuing up to be paid for singing, they overheard that the people in front were getting paid £3 more than they were,” said Joanne. “It was because they were comedians and that was how Cannon and Ball became a double act.” Now, as a legacy to the funny man, a statue will be placed in his honour in the grounds of the Lowther Pavilion, where he had performed many times and helped raised money for the theatre and gardens with The Friends of Lowther Pavilion. Joanne said: “After dad passed away, we had so many tributes and messages and a couple of councillors contacted us to see if we would mind them putting the

idea forward to have a statue in memory of him. “It’s a bit ironic really as he always joked about having a statue of himself and said he would never get one. The Council have been very supportive and asked us what sort of things we would like. We said there needs to be a twinkle in his eye, with one leg slightly forward and pulling on this right brace with his right thumb. We think that’s how most people will remember him.”

AS A FAMILY WE ARE DELIGHTED THAT HE CAN REMAIN A FABRIC OF THE LYTHAM COMMUNITY WITH THIS STATUE Leader of Fylde Council, Karen Buckley said: “Bobby was a very special, talented and unique individual, who was adopted by the locals of Lytham. His memorial statue will ensure he can go on giving that joy to visitors and residents.” Time Lince, Lowther Pavilion’s theatre manager added: “Bobby supported many of the amateur acts that we had on at the theatre. He was a real community player and he would often drop in with his mischievous laugh coming down the corridor.” Lowther Gardens Lytham Trust and Fylde Council are raising money for the special memorial statue of the local legend Bobby Ball and have set up a just giving page if anyone wants to donate – justgiving.com/ campaign/bobbyballstatue Joanne added: “My dad was entertaining right up until the end and was even laughing and joking with the nurses when he was in hospital. As a family we are delighted that he can remain a fabric of the Lytham community with this statue. He will be sadly missed by a lot of people.” n

CULINARY MASTERS

“For kitchens, different layers of light are key,” confirms Marketa. “It’s hard to think of a kitchen as being zen-like, as they are often a hectic space where the whole family congregates and comes together to cook, eat, chat, perhaps even do their homework.” Try to define different zones with your lighting such as efficient task lights over the worktops, sink and hob, pendants over an island, breakfast bar or dining table and then wall lights or spots overhead to add further illumination.

LAID-BACK LIVING

THE ART OF ZEN

So, what is a zen Interior exactly? Well, zen itself refers to the school of Buddhism which originated in China and is renowned for promoting practices of meditation and self-restraint. When we think of zen today, it can mean so many things and in the world of interiors, it’s all about creating a space that represents you, your emotions and your well-being. It’s a way of creating a calming home where we can feel relaxed and cocooned – a place where we can be ourselves and leave all our worries at the door. By choosing your interior design and in particular, your lighting, with care and consideration, it’s easy to introduce a zen-like ambience into your home.

create the perfect statement piece as well as providing ambience, task lighting and feature illumination. Seek out industrial, vintage pieces as these will complement all styles of design, from classic through to contemporary and everything in between.”

SOOTHING SANCTUARIES

MINIMALIST INTERIORS

We’re all familiar with the term minimalism and as one of the key foundations of a zen interior, it’s important to take some time to clear your home of clutter. Less is definitely more and this mantra will help make space and a pathway to a clear head and mind. “A minimalist interior definitely does not mean you need to sacrifice style however,” adds Marketa. “The most successful schemes will only include items that you absolutely need or are totally in love with. By freeing rooms of unnecessary distraction, the focus will fall on areas that are of genuine interest and value. Lighting can

In living areas and open-plan spaces, again creating different zones with pools of light is key for a calming environment. For many of us, working from home has now become a permanent thing so if you are looking to create a desk area within your downstairs space, try to look for a self-contained unit with drop-down desk and doors that can be closed at the end of the working day, leaving you free to enjoy the calmness of your surroundings without that work guilt following you around. Make a statement with an outsized or unusual shaped overhead light and combine with various wall, table and floor lamps for instant atmosphere after dark.

WHERE SPACE ALLOWS, TRY TO INCLUDE A COSY CORNER FOR READING OR LISTENING TO MUSIC “Where space allows, try to include a cosy corner for reading or listening to music,” suggests Marketa. “This may be the only room you can escape to when you need some time alone, apart from the bathroom, so it should be really personal to you. Layer your lighting with task lighting next to

Bathrooms are the ultimate chill-out zone for rest and relaxation so indulge yourself with the design and create something that really relaxes body and soul. Choose lighting that allows for applying make-up and shaving in the wall mirror as well as lighting that enhances a long hot soak in the tub. “The bathroom is also a room where keeping clutter at bay is key,” adds Marketa. Achieving a zen interior is not always easy, especially when you have to balance the needs of other family members. Yet by introducing a few simple touches to begin with, you will soon start to create calm throughout the home. n

GET YOUR GARDEN SUMMER READY Now is the time to be thinking of getting your garden ready for the months ahead. Despite the cold weather, there are still things you can be doing to get your garden summer ready writes Tracy Hargreaves

A

s well as filling your garden with plants and flowers, look at what other things you can do to enhance your garden. Don’t underestimate the transformative ability of artificial lighting when it comes to helping set a scene. In much the same way that you might use different light circuits in an interior, engage the same thought process for your outdoor space.

Lighting is a great way to bring your garden to life at night. If you have a greenhouse, give it a clean. Replace any broken glass, wash the inside and outside to remove moss that will have built up over the year, to make sure you let as much light in as possible. Sweep out any plant debris and give your plant pots a wash. Have a think about what you want to see in your garden this year and order any bulbs or seeds you might want for the summer. Prune any shrubs back to encourage new growth. Dig out your weeds, but don’t put them on the compost heap, throw them in the bin so they don’t start to grow. Turn over your beds and add in any mulch or fertiliser to make sure your soil is healthy for new plants. Check your fences, sheds, gates and trellis to see if they have been damaged by the winter weather and repair or repaint them. There are so many different designs of gates and fencing that can also act as a backdrop to your trees, plants and shrubs. Not only that, but exterior paint comes in all sorts of colours to lift your garden. Jet wash your patio and driveway to remove fungus, dirt and grime, so they don’t become slippy and tidy up any borders.

Don’t plant anything outside due to frosts still being around until May. If you are starting any plants off, grow by seed inside until they are strong enough to transfer. Scarify your lawn to make sure air is getting through to it and stop it from becoming water-logged. Check over your garden furniture. Does it need a repaint or oiling? If it’s plastic, give it a wash down and then keep covered to protect. If you are planning to stay at home this summer, then it may be worthwhile investing in a good patio set so you can eat alfresco. Add a gazebo or pergola for that finishing touch. If you have been keeping a compost heap, make sure you turn it over. It will make excellent mulch for your soil. Don’t wait until the weather is nice before you start out in the garden, there’s still plenty to do and when the nice weather comes it will be an opportunity for you to sit and enjoy your efforts. n

Not one to be rash in his decision making, he researched numerous products and spotted some spectacular new carpets being promoted by Gainsborough Flooring from award winning manufacturers Alternative Flooring. Having received the most comprehensive customer service training possible from Marks & Spencer when he was part of its management team in Belfast, Anthony expects the highest of standards from those he deals with. He was not let down by Gainsborough Flooring. Anthony commented: “I loved the honesty, integrity and flexibility of the team. When Eddy Brown initially came to see me, he took the time to understand exactly what I was looking to achieve and wasn’t afraid to challenge my ideas on the practicalities of what would work.

Photography: Roger Moore “The team were so accommodating and professional, however, what I was most impressed with were the fitters who were meticulous with the installation. It was critical that they lined up the heart shaped pattern from the hallway carpet with the polka dots from the bedroom one, otherwise it would have looked an absolute mess. I have huge admiration for their patience and attention to detail and think they enjoyed the challenge too.” For the hallway Anthony selected Alternative Flooring’s Quirky B Margo Selby Fair Isle Carpet range with its geometric shapes and handwoven structures and for the bedroom he opted for the Quirky B Spotty Grey where the iconic polka dots add vitality and fun to the room. Next, Anthony chose to refurbish his lounge and this time chose Margo Selby

I’m not too precious about my home and I want them to feel as comfortable as I do when they’re here. I know the flooring is of such quality that it is protected and any spillages can be cleaned.” Anthony concluded: “There’s nothing more delightful than coming home from a long day at work to my welcoming, cheerful and vibrant home, which I totally adore.” n

GLOBAL INFLUENCE Global influence interior styling is a real fusion of decorative patterns, earthy colours and natural textures found in handmade crafts around the world

T

he style of global influence is often carefully curated against a white or neutral background to give a contrast. So imagine handthrown ochre coloured pots, mixed with bold spiced honey block-print textiles, beaten copper pots and rough cut browncoloured hardwoods. It’s a celebration of rich tones and rugged textures from distant lands and a trend style that has been loved for years.

This trend is a diverse celebration of globally-inspired patterns – taking homes on a journey of global eclecticism. The look welcomes the fusion of decorative ikats, colours and intricate Indian block prints. Rich tones and rugged textures symbolise the authentic, handcrafted style of this nomadic trend. It’s a form of eclectic styling. A meeting of nomad and traveller inspired by travels across the world. People want real homes that reflect their personalities and feelings. So global influence styling is about blending old

Uniqueness and individuality are prized rather than complying with any particular style. People are drawn to pieces that have character and have an interesting narrative. Old and original Indian interiors whether traditional tribal, functional metal industrial or simple homewares such as handmade pots, metal trunks and cabinets work very well with interiors from Africa, the French countryside and with styles from different eras. Be inspired by Scaramanga’s spotlight on the global influence styling trend. In summary use a lot of time-worn materials, upcycled and vintage furniture, earthy colours and asymmetrical patterns, abstract shapes like ikats and paisleys. Remember to buy what you like and not what you’re told to like! n

hether buying a brand-new home, undertaking a large-scale renovation or embarking on a complete refurbishment, changing where you live is a substantial investment. If you’re to benefit fully from that investment, you need to make sure the interiors are as stylish, original and functional as the bricks and mortar are robust. “Your home’s interior is an extension of your personality and individuality,” says Alisa Bowen, creative director of Inside Studio in Preston. “If your home reflects

your personality and is designed to work for you practically,it will always be a place which makes you happy.”

YOUR HOME’S INTERIOR IS AN EXTENSION OF YOUR PERSONALITY AND INDIVIDUALITY Alisa and her team specialise in high value residential property transformations, usually focused on large scale renovation projects, extensions, barn conversions and similar. She is also an expert in bespoke interiors for new build projects, often working off plan. Her service includes everything from space layout, lighting designs and furniture sourcing, to the finer details of accessorising. “I believe we have unparalleled trade and supplier contacts,” says Alisa. “When it comes to furniture and furnishings, we’ve

hand-picked the very best from Europe and beyond, and our excellent trading relationships mean that clients can access unique items of exceptional quality, at a price they wouldn’t be able to secure for themselves.” When embarking on a project, the first thing Alisa does is meet her clients to find out as much about them as she can. Whilst she’ll also assess the space in question, the most important thing is getting to know a client’s personality and what they hope to achieve from the space. Only then, will the final design truly reflect their hopes and dreams. Luckily, Alisa is a natural reader of people and her proposals are often met with more than a degree of surprise, as clients marvel at her genius ability to deliver designs which embody their unique style and aspirations. Alisa is talking to me from her design

TH E I N SI DE studio based within a converted coach house in the centre of Preston. Although the space has been renovated to accommodate this multi-talented team, it has retained much of its original character. “It’s a quirky space, a very creative space,” smiles Alisa. “Clients often comment that there’s a real ‘buzz’ around the studio and that’s perfect for generating ideas.” The studio features a dedicated presentation room with a large screen for showing clients the design ideas for their homes and all the material samples. “We often use computer-generated, 3D, photo-realistic images which enable clients to clearly see how their rooms will look once the project has been completed.” If you’re considering a large building or renovation project, Alisa and her team can work alongside your chosen contractor to ensure the completed scheme is co-ordinated down to the finest detail. “It’s a great

benefit to involve us from the earliest stages, so we can make sure everything – layout, furniture and in particular lighting – is absolutely right. Nothing is overlooked, it is the complete service.

OUR BUSINESS IS SMALL ENOUGH TO BE PERSONAL, WHILST EXPERIENCED AND EQUIPPED TO TAKE CARE OF MULTI-MILLION-POUND PROJECTS “I think what sets us apart is that our business is small enough to be personal, whilst experienced and equipped to take care of multi-million-pound projects.” Talking to Alisa, it becomes clear that, above all else, she really wants to make her clients happy. “People deserve happiness, comfort and a little bit of luxury. They deserve to work with people

they trust and who are passionate about what they do. “I feel privileged that clients let me into their homes, and I will never tire of seeing how happy they are when they achieve their finished space. I like to think that, with their interiors designed by us, our clients will always look forward to going home.” n

WHATEVER STYLE OF HOUSE, TRADITIONAL OR MODERN, WE WILL HAVE A WINDOW COVERING NOT JUST TO SUIT IT, BUT TO CREATE A REAL STATEMENT “Blinds have changed so much in recent years, with venetians, shutters and the brilliant ‘day and night’ blinds really increasing in popularity. They offer the ultimate daylight control at the touch of a button. Emma and Kim in the showroom are both very knowledgeable about our product range so they’ll be able to give friendly, expert advice on everything,” says Ian.

“And, just as building trends change, so do our products, so we can always find a solution for any window or glass door in your home,” Ian says. “We have been helping lots of customers with new builds, so whether you want one window dressing beautifully or throughout the whole house, we can take care of everything. HEAVENLY GATES

hether we want to create more privacy or make our drives and patios into safer outdoor play areas for our children and pets, effective gates and railings are an essential part of our homes and gardens. There are many styles to choose from, would traditional wrought iron designs look best outside your house? Perhaps you would prefer modern metal framed gates infilled with either timber, composites or aluminium? You might also want to consider the extra options for security and ease of use, such as electrical access control. Luckily the craftsmen at MC Fabrication in Lostock Hall are on hand to understand your requirements, and to create and install bespoke designs to enhance your property. As business owner Martin Cunningham explains, none of the gates and railings are off-the-shelf products, but are manufactured within the MC Fabrication workshop, using locally sourced materials. “The design aesthetics are down to the customer, with our professional input,” he says. “Whether your home is a contemporary or traditional build, I can advise which style and colour of gate would be best suited to your home.” The new outdoor display area which Martin has built next to the Lostock Hall

The new outdoor display at MC Fabrication shows how gates and railings can enhance the style and security of your home, says Stephanie Sparrow. Photography: Andrew Clutterbuck workshop is filled with inspiring ideas. Just opened this spring, it means customers can walk around examples of gates, railings and finishes, all in the fresh air.

WHETHER YOUR HOME IS A CONTEMPORARY OR TRADITIONAL BUILD, I CAN ADVISE WHICH STYLE AND COLOUR OF GATE WOULD BE BEST SUITED TO YOUR HOME From the sleek Iroko hardwood panels for infilled privacy gates, to finials and collars for railings, Martin offers a range of design details. He can bring samples of woods and finishes to home visits if required. Gates and railings are heavy objects requiring expert installation, particularly if you choose automated electric gates. Martin, who holds a Gate Safe installers certificate, advises customers to buy their gates and their electrification together in one package to be sure that they work

together and suit the location. He launched the business in 2014. It has earned five-star reviews in the Lancashire Safe Trader scheme and is renowned for using quality materials. “All our iron gates and railings are galvanised and powder coated as standard, offering a large range of colour options and patina finishes,” says Martin, “while our hardwood gates are treated in a widely available teak oil so are easy to re-coat. We want our gates to enhance your home for decades to come.” n

the entry point into Milton Keynes from the M1. “Generally the basic process is exactly the same regardless of the size of the piece, although working with steel and creating larger pieces, which can be up to 10m can sometimes be challenging as I am only 5ft 3.”

For private individuals or public and corporate work, Clare will discuss ideas with each client, their preferences, likes and dislikes. She will then produce a maquette, a small-scale model, of the final piece. “A maquette is like a 3D sketch – the challenge begins when I decide how much I am going to scale it up. The maquette

gives a really good idea of how the final piece will look,” adds Clare, who can also advise on siting the installation or the supply of the foundation or plinths if required. Working in stainless steel to produce figurative pieces, Clare was recently invited to appear on a BBC series Home is Where the Art is presented by Nick Knowles. She was one of three artists challenged to create a piece of art for a lady who was devoted to her horse, Dragon. “I wanted to encapsulate the very close bond between horse and rider in the sculpture and to show the strength and fluidity of his musculature,” recalls Clare. “It is often the movement of an animal or person that appeals to me. I absolutely love ballet and capturing the grace of the dancers. I love the flow and the energy, the beauty of it is amazing,” adds Clare, who is currently working on three-quarter life size sculptures of ballet dancers that she hopes to show this year at Beaulieu. Some of her international commissions include a set of three life-size sporting figures, which were shipped to Australia, and also a life-size wolf commissioned by private clients living in the Italian Alps. Clare has exhibited her work internationally and throughout the UK – she has been involved in the Royal Horticultural Society’s show gardens in Hampton Court and Chelsea and closer to home, Clare is also the artist that created the Sikka deer in Brungerley Park in Clitheroe and the three fishes sculptures in Whalley. Looking ahead, Clare plans to show her work in a group bird exhibition at

Contemporary Six Gallery in Manchester this May: “Among others I will be including a barn owl and peregrine falcon that I have made this year.”

Some of Clare’s private work is commissioned to mark a special occasion: “After all these years I still really love what I do,” says Clare, who has a BA Hons in Fine Art from Cardiff. “I am also very lucky to have worked on many big pieces of public art and won awards along the way.” If you are interested in discussing a commission with Clare or would like information on upcoming exhibitions, please see her contact details below. n

Today, Longines presents new timepieces that are a testimony to their pioneering spirit. A glowing tribute to these exceptional men and women who, by a record, an exploit or a display of courage, have left their mark on history – encouraging new generations to push the boundaries. All models from the Longines Spirit collection come with state-of-the-art technology, resulting in highly accurate movements that are all chronometer-certified. Longines watches and devices, thanks to their reliability, accuracy, robustness

and original technology, have contributed towards the success of numerous pioneering exploits. They have accompanied explorers on their journeys to the last unknown lands, defied extreme weather, navigated wild oceans

and played a part in opening up new air routes and establishing aviation records. Numerous explorers and aviators have placed their trust in and even entrusted their lives to Longines. The brand has equipped a host of adventures with their precision tool watches – Earhart, Victor, Smith and Hughes are foremost among those who benefited from its expertise as they conquered air, land and sea.

LOVING THE SKIN YOU’RE IN... For most women approaching midlife and dealing with the menopause, loss of skin tone, texture and luminosity are side effects that are often difficult to come to terms with

lowering oestrogen levels, and you have the perfect storm. As a result, skin looks thinner, with a loss of tone and firmness – and more visible lines and wrinkles. But the visible effects aren’t the only area of concern as collagen is the glue that holds your ligaments, joints and bones together.

F

or those of us who are unwilling to embrace wrinkle smoothing injections and fillers, it can be hard to know how best to help our skin to restore and improve that all elusive radiance as we age. There are many brilliant skin care regimes which have the added benefit of being organic and vegan (Dr. Hauschka and Nourish) and which do a fabulous job for the surface of your skin. A healthy diet is also a must – but what about the complex world of supplements? How do you navigate it and, do they really work? Thankfully, specialists have been researching exactly this area for many years, and believe they have the answer. INTRODUCING COLLAGEN Collagen supplements are being hailed as the new skin saviours. To better explain, let’s answer a few questions: WHAT IS COLLAGEN? Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It gives structure to our skin (skin is made up of 75 per cent collagen and gives skin its strength and elasticity), bones, muscles and other connective tissue. Collagen production starts to slow down at around 25, and by the age of 45, levels have fallen by as much as 30 per cent – which is when you really start to notice. Add to the mix the onset of menopause and

WHAT ARE COLLAGEN SHOTS? Rejuvenated Collagen Shots are clinically formulated powders which you mix with water to create a drink. Intensive research has clinically proven that taking collagen orally bolsters collagen levels, which in turn restores skin’s tone, pliability and thickness, counteracting sagging, dehydration, crêpiness (lovely!) and wrinkling. A study in the Natural Medicine Journal showed that women who took collagen saw significant improvement in skin texture after six months. The gold standard is bioavailable hydrolysed marine collagen. HOW TO USE For maximum benefits take a Collagen Shot daily, ideally half an hour before bedtime which is when cells are renewing. Alternatively have on an empty stomach either first thing in the morning or before a meal. To taste, it is rather pleasant and has a delicate berry flavour.

INGREDIENTS Each shot contains 10,000mgs of hydrolysed marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, acai berry super antioxidant, vitamins B3, B5, B6, C (the process of collagen formation is heavily dependent on vitamin C), zinc and copper to boost your levels of peptide-rich amino acids. (Not advisable for those with fish or shellfish allergies.) An anti-ageing cocktail that gradually, but dramatically, improves the appearance of skin tone and texture by helping to: •R educe the appearance of lines, wrinkles and ‘crow’s feet’ •M ake skin appear younger with added radiance • Increase skin firmness and hydration • Improve elasticity of the skin • Reduce skin dryness • Increase skin smoothness Collagen Shots are suitable for diabetics, 100 per cent natural ingredients, gluten-free, lactose-free and contain hyaluronic-acid. health&beauty benefits of the clinic, what really sets it apart is the incredible personal support and care offered by the team. Sarah Caine, the clinic’s breast care nurse, plays a vital role in each patient’s care. A nurse for 27 years, who has specialised in breast health for seven years, Sarah was recruited specifically for the new clinic. “If a mammogram is done in the morning, the consultant will review the results immediately and send them straight to me, so I can usually be back in touch with the patient the very same day,” explains Sarah. “If a problem has been identified, I’ll immediately provide the patient with a follow up consultant appointment.” Sarah then becomes the patients’ first point of contact for individual support and further information. They will have Sarah’s phone number and can contact her at any time. “Patients can become quite emotional and upset, and Sarah is with them all the way, quite literally holding their hands,” says Hayley. You don’t need a GP’s referral to access the new service. If you have any concerns

uring last year’s pandemic, there was UK-wide concern that people with symptoms of non-Covid conditions were unable to access diagnostic services. This often meant that serious problems were not identified and were therefore left untreated. The women’s health team at Blackpool’s Spire Fylde Coast Hospital were particularly concerned that routine mammograms were being cancelled and that women with worrying symptoms were unable to access the help they needed. In response, they set up a new specialist service dedicated entirely to breast care. “We were genuinely concerned that routine screening was unavailable and women who had found lumps were often unable to see their own GP, never mind a consultant,” says Hayley Summersgill,

SHOW A LEG!

A

s we look forward to coming out of lockdown and to finally being able to book a holiday in the sun, now is the ideal time to deal with varicose veins which may be affecting your confidence. The team at RejuvaMed Vein Centre can help. Based at the historic Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, RejuvaMed incorporates the only dedicated varicose vein treatment centre in Lancashire. RejuvaMed has built a nationwide reputation for quality care and exceptional results. The vein centre is led by consultant vascular surgeon Rob Salaman and has established itself as a leading provider of varicose vein treatment in the north west, at prices way below Lancashire’s private hospitals. Mr Salaman has worked both within the NHS and privately for over 30 years and is clinical director of vascular surgery at The Royal Blackburn Hospital. He now consults privately, solely at RejuvaMed and has carried out many successful procedures at the clinic, so patients can be sure they are in safe hands. Dr McKeating, RejuvaMed’s medical director, explains: “Funding for treatment for

Ensure your post lockdown legs are summerready at RejuvaMed’s varicose vein treatment centre in Clitheroe varicose veins has been rationed by the NHS, meaning that patients often have to pay for their procedure. Where NHS treatment is available, waiting lists are now through the roof because of Covid-19. We are therefore pleased to provide safe, relatively painless treatments with

for up to £2500 less. “There is no need to undergo expensive and risky surgery under general anaesthesia if you wish to say goodbye to your varicose veins, or to travel further afield for your treatment. We welcome patients with private medical insurance and are approved by

excellent results and minimal recovery time. Our appointments are available within three weeks, meaning you can get the treatment you need quickly. We don’t have the same overheads as large private hospitals, so we can offer the same treatment

the major private health insurers.” As well as offering radiofrequency (RF) ablation treatment for varicose veins, the vein centre also offers the innovative VenaSeal™ procedure, which uses a medical adhesive rather than a heat source to

seal the diseased vein. A small cut is made into the skin under local anaesthetic, and a narrow plastic tube is placed into the vein. A long catheter is then inserted through this sheath and small amounts of adhesive are then injected at intervals along the vein under ultrasound guidance. Once the procedure is complete (which may be in as little as 20 minutes), an adhesive plaster is applied over the small cut, and you are immediately able to be up and about. The procedure is quicker and more comfortable than RF and laser ablation, both during and after treatment, as there are fewer injections required and there is less bruising. A huge benefit of VenaSeal™ over other treatments is that you are not required to wear compression stockings afterwards, meaning you can return to normal activities immediately. In UK clinics and hospitals this treatment is typically offered at a price of £4000. However, RejuvaMed has priced this treatment at only £2295 for one leg, and £2595 for both, which we believe is the cheapest clinic for VenaSeal™ in the UK. n For more information on pricing, or to book a consultation with Mr Salaman, please email us now at: info@rejuvamed.co.uk, or call the vein centre after we reopen on 13th April on 01200 538668

athletes, GB equestrian team members, professional sportspeople and countless patients recovering from surgery. She also has experience working with horses. “Working with animals really helps to develop what we call our ‘sense of feel’, as animals cannot tell us where it hurts,” says Sarah. “This keen sense of feel helps me locate the exact source of the pain in my patients.”

WE FOCUS ON BODY AWARENESS AND ALIGNMENT, MAINTAINING CORRECT POSTURE AND USING CORE STRENGTH One of Sarah’s recent patients can testify to her ability to pinpoint accurately the source of a problem. Harry Barton, a former dairy farmer turned carpenter, had knee replacement surgery late last year and received physiotherapy from Sarah after his operation. “She could see I walked with a kink in my leg, the result of years living with pain,

oving with ease and comfort is something often taken for granted. Most of us walk, stretch and bend every day and others push their bodies further by running, cycling or playing sport. When that ease of movement is compromised for any reason, it’s crucial to seek help quickly and the physiotherapy team at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital is an excellent place to start. Physiotherapy uses different techniques to regain movement, increase flexibility, reduce pain and improve the way joints and muscles work. It is often recommended following an injury, illness or surgery but can also be used to treat back and neck pain, joint, ligament, muscle and tendon problems, posture issues and whiplash. “Our treatment usually combines

hands-on care with exercises and education to enable patients to maintain flexibility and movement,” explains Sarah Light, physiotherapy manager at Spire Fylde Coast. “We focus on body awareness and alignment, maintaining correct posture and using core strength, all supported by personalised exercise routines.” Sarah joined Spire last summer, after many years in private practice, and has a fascinating background, being qualified in both general physiotherapy and animal physiotherapy. She has treated Team GB

and she found the exact root of the problem in the tendons behind my knee,” says Harry. “As well as helping me regain full movement after my operation, Sarah has helped me to walk normally again.” Sarah and her team combine a variety of techniques to maximise results. She includes sports pilates and acupuncture amongst her treatments and advocates shockwave therapy in dealing with plantar fasciitis or pain in the bottom of the foot. Sarah is keen to point out that physiotherapy is not just for hip and knee replacement patients or injured sportspeople. “Anyone experiencing pain or discomfort which prevents them from moving naturally or living their normal life can get in touch with us for a course of treatment.” Summing up his thoughts on the physiotherapy he received, Harry Barton says: “Sarah was brilliant. Her diligence and attention to detail were outstanding. I feel so lucky to have been treated by her.” n Spire Fylde Coast Hospital St. Walburgas Road, Blackpool FY3 8BP 01253 308031 spirehealthcare.com/spire-fylde-coast-hospital

lifestyle remain for some time, it’s very important for people of all ages and abilities to be as active as possible and the World Health Organisation’s Be Active campaign aims to help you do just that – and to have some fun at the same time. Remember to take a short break regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes to improve blood circulation and muscle activity.

REMEMBER TO TAKE A SHORT BREAK REGULARLY, EVEN IF IT’S JUST FOR A FEW MINUTES Regular physical activity benefits both the body and mind. It can reduce high blood pressure, help manage weight and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and various cancers – all conditions that can increase susceptibility to Covid-19. Regular physical activity can help give our days a routine and be a way to stay in contact with family and friends. It’s also good for our mental health – reducing the risk of depression, cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia – and improve overall feelings. CIMPSA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) has been working hard to promote all these benefits and has been urging government and local authorities to think again in those areas where gyms are closed to reopen them for everyone’s wellbeing.

LET’S KEEP MOVING Last year was unprecedented and tested everyone both physically and mentally. One area which was particularly affected was the leisure industry, writes Tracy Hargreaves

Exercise has long been associated with health benefits and the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that many of us have stayed at home and sat down more than usual. But with the pandemic looking set to

uring the first lockdown the weather was glorious and a lot of people got out on their bikes or took up walking, but for those who worked in the fitness industry they had to adapt to a new way of working. Gyms were closed, leaving hundreds of fitness instructors out of work, but more importantly unable to provide mental and physical support to their members.

IT’S VERY IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES TO BE AS ACTIVE AS POSSIBLE

It has also been protecting its members by recommending other ways of teaching such as zoom and online classes, offering opportunities for fitness instructors to retrain and reactivate with free online training courses, as well as providing up to date information on what the government guidelines mean for gyms, classes and personal trainers. Not an easy feat when the whole country has different rules! But whether you go to a gym or not, adults should aim to do at least 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, or at least 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous-intensity activity throughout the week. Find something you enjoy and you will soon see the benefits, both physically and mentally. n

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO NOW? 2020 is certainly going to be etched in our memories, but how about making 2022 the year to remember for all the right reasons, writes Sarah Freeman. Photography: Sarah Freeman

N

ow is a great time to start planning your next holiday. There’s also been a shift in the type of holiday consumers are looking for. Private villa bookings in Greece have rocketed as people look to remain in their own bubble, as has experiential and small group touring as people want to explore a little more off the beaten track and stay in less populated areas. Self-drive and campervan holidays are also seeing an increase and the UK continues to appeal to those not wanting to stray too far from home. Finally, Indian Ocean bookings and especially the Maldives are popular for the ultimate in seclusion. The travel industry has seen how consumer choice has changed in 2020 and the variety of offerings out there now is simply incredible. With the silver lining that for 2021/22 once overly crowded tourist

destinations will be less busy. Here’s some hot destinations to look at: Iceland – the land of fire and ice with its waterfalls and volcanoes continues in popularity combining whale watching, snowmobiling and off-road touring activities with its gentler pursuits of hiking, Northern Lights viewing and bathing in geo-thermal waters Costa Rica – as eco travel continues to grow, this Central America country with more than six per cent of the world’s biodiversity grows in appeal to the sustainability market Vietnam – with hotel investments on the rise, this South East Asian gem is becoming a travel hotspot, with accommodation to suit all budgets, amazing food and easy touring options Namibia – with its rich history, expansive desert and abundance of endangered wildlife, this destination offers travellers something new and exciting to experience Qatar – gaining popularity due to its fascinating culture, Doha skyscrapers, deserts and pristine beaches, being recognised as the safest country in the world and hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022

Slovenia – offering stunning natural scenery, Slovenia is now a big hitting foodie hotspot as 2020 saw the launch of its first Michelin Guide and it was named European Region of Gastronomy for 2021 New Zealand – on most people’s bucket lists, never ending appeal for those who love jaw dropping scenery, isolation and outdoor activities galore Now you’ve been inspired, what do you need to look out for when planning your trip? • Does the destination have a travel corridor? • Are the borders open and is the country accepting tourists? • Do I need a visa? How long does my passport need to be valid for? • Do I need to quarantine on arrival or on return? • Do I need a Covid test, how many hours before and which type? • Do I need the Covid vaccine? • What entry forms do I need to complete? • Do I need to download a country specific app? • Which travel insurance partner will cover me for Covid? THE DANGERS OF DIY WILLS Whilst it’s no secret that the events of 2020 have instigated a huge increase in the number of people either making or updating their will, there is still an overwhelming majority of people that don’t have their affairs in order, or are relying on DIY wills to cover their wishes, advises Ashley Marshall from Farleys Solicitors It has been suggested that poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are responsible for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year. This is a worrying statistic given that up to 10 per cent of the value of a person’s estate can be engrossed by additional fees as a result of an ineffective will.

F

arleys, alongside many firms, have seen an influx of enquiries as the pandemic continues to increase the public’s awareness of the importance of making a will. Whilst this increased awareness in planning for the future is welcomed, another worrying trend the firm are seeing is a rise in issues from individuals who have drafted their own wills, or relied on ‘off the shelf’ template documents to convey their last wishes. While the DIY approach may seem quicker, easier and cheaper at the outset, it can lead to many a difficulty, significant expense and unnecessary stress for those you leave behind, should your will be challenged post-death.

INSTRUCTING A SOLICITOR TO DRAFT YOUR WILL MEANS THAT YOU HAVE PEACE OF MIND THAT YOUR WILL IS WELL-CONSIDERED, WELL DRAFTED AND ERROR FREE “Having a DIY will can be just as stressful for your family as not having one in place at all,” says Ashley. “A DIY will is likely to contain mistakes or omissions, leaving your family to argue over your estate. “Everyone’s individual circumstances are different. You may own property abroad or have an interest in a business, which may not be covered by a one-size-fits-all DIY option. Family circumstances may also be complex and need to be accounted for. “Bespoke, professional legal advice is essential and can avoid all of these issues. Upon your

passing your beneficiaries need to have a solid and structured document tailored specifically to your personal circumstances to ensure that dealing with your estate is as smooth as possible. “Instructing a solicitor to draft your will means that you have peace of mind that your will is well-considered, well drafted and error free. In addition to this, your solicitor will be able to discuss estate planning to make your will as tax efficient as possible.” When it comes to ensuring your final wishes are respected and your estate is distributed to the people you want to benefit, a will is an essential document. A relatively small investment now can reduce stress and financial problems for you and your family in the long run. n

anal paths are a great way to explore the local area, seeing how they cut through the landscape connecting towns together. For canal paths we recommend some wide grippy tyres, and leave it a couple of days after rainfall, unless you don’t mind a little mud.

This ride starts off in Kirkham town centre. Heading east out of the town towards Preston,

take the left hand turn onto Carr Lane that is signposted for Treacles and Inskip. Follow the road for around three miles until you reach The Hand and Dagger Inn. On the right had side of the road you will notice a set of steps that will lead down to the canal. Once you are on the canal path you can head right and it will take you into Preston, but today we are going left towards

Lancaster. Follow the canal for around 6.5 miles, cutting under the motorway you will feel like you have found some new secret routes. Once you reach Old Nell’s, come back up onto the road, if you want to extend your ride, now is the time. You can carry on up the canal, heading into Garstang, then can navigate to Lancaster, if you cross over the A6 you are straight into the Forest of Bowland and climbing galore, but today we are keeping it short and you want to head up the road with Old Nell’s on your right back towards Kirkham. Follow the road straight for two miles and you will reach a bend in the road with a fork off to the

left signposted for Inskip. Take this and then take the left at the end. Turn left again into Inskip,

head through the village turning right at the Derby Arms. The road will lead you all the way back to Treacles where with a right turn you can head back to Kirkham. Enjoy the ride. n ribblecycles.co.uk

In court proceedings we will represent you and your best interests robustly and with vigour. The court can help to decide how the finances should be separated, taking into account a wide range of factors including your income, resources and earning capacity and balancing these against your respective needs.

eparating from your spouse is one of the biggest and most difficult decisions you will ever have to make. When faced with dealing with a significant life change and the worry and uncertainty that can bring, it is important you obtain legal advice as soon as possible to assist you in preparing for divorce. Receiving expert advice in the early stages of your separation may prove invaluable in giving you confidence to approach the practical considerations associated with your separation such as addressing the care arrangements for your children and obtaining financial security in the immediate and longer term. Consideration will need to be given regarding how to separate your finances, including deciding how to separate property, pensions, savings and investments. This can be resolved in a number of ways and we would recommend mediation as a process for negotiation to assist you and your spouse in reaching decisions about any of the issues arising from your separation. Mediation provides an opportunity to meet together with a trained and impartial mediator who is legally trained and will assist to reduce conflict in a confidential and informal setting.

Alternatively, we would suggest voluntary financial disclosure, which involves inviting you and your spouse to provide documents to us with a view to identifying the value of your assets and negotiating a settlement. If an agreement is reached, the next step would be a financial order, giving you peace of mind that matters are resolved and protection against the possibility of

It also organises regular events and social activities. Due to Covid-19 much of its in-person activities have had to be suspended, something Hilary has been really missing.

I CAN CHAT TO PEOPLE WHO ARE IN A SIMILAR SITUATION TO ME AND WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT I’M GOING THROUGH David Brown, Chairman of the Preston branch of Parkinson’s UK comments: “We are so grateful to McCarthy and Stone and to Hilary for the offer of help. Right now, it’s incredibly important that as we’re asked to stay inside, those suffering with Parkinson’s continue to keep mobile, so funding weekly fitness and yoga classes is something we have been doing online. We’ve also introduced a dance class which has proved popular so we would like to be able to do more of this in future. We

or many years, Hilary Wheale, who suffers with Parkinson’s, has fundraised for the charity by collecting donations outside her local supermarket, Booths. She would also make raffle prizes, help out at meetings and organise guest speakers. However, Hilary has been unable to do this so far this year, due to Covid-19 restrictions. But this hasn’t stopped her. A homeowner at the McCarthy and Stone development on Cop Lane, Penwortham, Hilary appealed to them to help the charity, which like many other charities around the country, has been

struggling to raise the vital funds it needs for its continued operation. The housebuilder, knowing the personal connection between Hilary and the charity, and how disappointed she was not to be able to fundraise in her usual way, kindly agreed to donate £500. She comments: “I suffer with Parkinson’s and so for me the charity is a real life-line. I can chat to people who are in a similar situation to me and who understand what I’m going through. It’s helped me to see that a diagnosis doesn’t mean the end, and there are so many good people there who

are now increasingly reliant on individual donations to allow our work to continue. This donation will help us to increase our digital services in Preston and continue the work of our local group at an increasingly difficult and uncertain time for us all.” Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world. There are around 145,000 people living with Parkinson’s in the UK in 2020. With population growth and ageing, this is likely to increase by a fifth, to around 172,000 people in the UK, by 2030. n

LAID BACK LIVING As we get older, we all want to continue with the best quality of life possible

A

s we age we realise that we need to adapt to our changing bodies. They don’t always function like they used to and we have to be prepared to accept that. But the good news is as we are living longer our quality of life is getting better and there are now more facilities available to us than ever before. Take retirement living. Many now are their own little luxury villages where people can have their own apartments, which have been built with the audience in mind. Wider doors for wheelchair access, plug sockets at accessible height, easy access around the site and with many having gardens or ponds, allowing people to have their independence, yet have services on tap such as meals prepared, trips out, cinema, hairdresser and cleaners, without having to leave the comfort of their complex.

If you don’t want to live on a complex there are sites, such as Woodland Park in Garstang, where you can purchase your own lodges and take advantage of the quiet, tranquil environment, but still get to know

your neighbours should you wish to. These make great places to retire to. Retirement living on a site such as this can also combat loneliness, which can happen as you get older and less able to leave the house, as there are always like-minded people around to socialise with and support you. If you are more in need of assisted living so you can still live independently, a quick assessment and a look at your lifestyle will soon make it clear how much care you need – if you are living at home it may well be that a package of care can be formulated alongside installing adaptations to suit you and your home. Alternatively, if you require a more intense package that includes making meals, personal care, help with mobility or major home adaptations, advice is always available. Care packages can be ultimately flexible and suited to your personal budget, as can home adaptation projects. As you are getting older, embrace life and enjoy it to the full and take advantage of all the great facilities and services on offer. Being happy and feeling safe where you live is important. n

All is peaceful. This is the way of life at Woodlands Country Park, an idyllic community of attractive wooden lodges set in 40 acres of rolling countryside with its own woodland, lakes and waterways. All the lodges here have their own gardens and private space, many on the water’s edge and others with their own private wooded area. Walking around the park, it’s immediately clear that people take great care of their properties. Visit in the summer and everywhere you look you’ll see gardens packed with colour. There are clematis

Woodlands is open all year round and each season offers something new to see. All the lodges are central heated, with double glazing and modern kitchens. Properties currently available to buy range from £145,000 to £200,000. They include a three-bedroom lodge on a large plot with a stunning garden which has fabulous views over the waterway and all its resident wildlife. The best way to appreciate the tranquillity and beauty of Woodlands is to see it for yourself. You can visit the park any time by appointment. Visitors can walk around the park, experience the views and see inside the lodges which are for sale.

THESE ARE LUXURY LODGES IN VERY GENEROUS PLOTS AND THEY OFFER A VERY HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING Despite that much sought-after ‘middle of nowhere’ feeling, you’re within easy reach of the pretty town of Garstang, with its eclectic collection of shops and eateries, weekly market, leisure centre and golf course. The Lake District, Blackpool and Lytham St Annes are also close by so you can enjoy days out aplenty from your relaxing rural retreat.

“These are luxury lodges in very generous plots and they offer a very high standard of living,” says Natalie. “Many of our residents came to us after visiting similar parks elsewhere and they always say they love the space they have here, with room for friends and family to visit.” Which is important, obviously, because if you’ve found your dream retreat, you’ll want to share it with the people you love. n

FRESHEN UP MORE THAN JUST YOUR HOUSE THIS SPRING The team at Raymond James Ribble Valley, based in Longridge, explain why now is the optimal time to review your financial goals and take stock of your assets

W

ith the hours of daylight getting longer and the mornings brighter, many homeowners begin bracing themselves to tackle their annual big ‘spring’ clean and tidy up. Spring encourages many of us to clean our homes, freshen up décor and transform the garden. It can also be the perfect time to review your financial goals, declutter your accounts, weed out any serial underperformers and rebalance your portfolio. We look at practical ways to potentially add some bloom back into your investment portfolio and take stock of your accumulated assets.

Revisit your goals

As with your wardrobe, the first thing you might do is evaluate what you own and why you own it. What role do your investments play in your portfolio and are

they helping you achieve your goals? Every investment should serve a purpose. You might invest to help your portfolio grow or to save for retirement, or perhaps to give you a bit of extra income.

OUR ADVISERS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING YOU ACHIEVE YOUR OWN UNIQUE VERSION OF FINANCIAL FREEDOM Make sure you have a specific goal in mind and see if what you’re investing in meets that.

Spread your roots

Diversification isn’t just about the number of investments, but rather how each one complements the others. You could expand your holdings across different types of investments that usually perform differently from each other like shares, bonds and cash, or spread your shareholdings between different sectors, like tech or healthcare.

Weed out consistent underperformers

Many people own shares they bought years ago on a friend’s recommendation, or they liked a product that a company once sold. If it’s something you’ve found hard to keep track of or lost interest in doing your research and its performance is lagging behind other investments, it could be a good idea to rethink investing in it. It takes a lot of time to follow an individual company, its progress and the different risks it faces.

You could consider selling a portion of your top performers and top up areas that haven’t done so well, as long as you’re still happy with your choices. It might sound counterproductive but having investments that move in different directions is why you diversify in the first place.

Bring your accounts together

It’s hard enough to keep a grip of a single set of investments, but if you have a pot full of different accounts across different providers, it can be even harder. Check to see if you have more than one of a particular type of account, like an ISA or pension. If you do, it could make sense to bring everything together under one roof as this will make them easier to look after.

Plant something new

Spring gives us a chance to cut off our portfolio’s dead branches and plant that money into something that has a better chance of blossoming. If you’re not sure about how your portfolio is doing or want someone to help you with a spring clean, Raymond James has an experienced team of advisers on hand to help.

REVIEW YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS, DECLUTTER YOUR ACCOUNTS, WEED OUT ANY SERIAL UNDERPERFORMERS AND REBALANCE YOUR PORTFOLIO Advice isn’t just for helping you choose investments though. Our advisers are passionate about helping you achieve your own unique version of financial freedom. n Risk Warning: Opinions constitute our judgement as of this date and are subject to change without warning

Prune your winners

It’s likely you chose your investments based on the amount of risk you were willing to take. When you review your portfolio, make sure you still have the right amount in each area, and if not, rebalance.

OPERATION BIRD BOX The British Association for Shooting and Conservation has been busy with various wildlife projects involving youngsters building and strategically placing bird boxes across game and clay shoots throughout the region, writes Duncan Thomas, Director of BASC North

Lewis Bretherton.Youngsters have built countless bird boxes and placed them across game and clay shoots across the North of England, many of the boxes were fitted with cameras and some batches even achieved a 90 per cent usage rate, which is commendable!

D

uring Covid lockdown the shooting community has been busy with lots of C19-compliant conservation and wildlife projects putting back an immense amount of time and effort into this amazing area. Most of these projects don’t just enhance the environment we share, and the species concerned, but also provide educational opportunities for many youngsters. With the challenges of lockdown the opportunities to get out and into some fresh air have become very precious. Our Bird Box Project, generously kick-started by a gamekeepers’ luncheon donation at Northcote a few years ago, goes from strength to strength, managed by our leading Youngshot’s Ambassador

WE CAN BE PROUD WE MADE EXCELLENT USE OF OUR TIME SUPPORTING OUR AMAZING WILDLIFE IN THE RIBBLE CATCHMENT AND BEYOND At the start of lockdown BBC Look North ran a feature on our volunteers making excellent use of their time making and placing bird boxes in sensitive areas.

If you pardon the pun, we’ve ‘branched out’ and this year have constructed loads of boxes for not just songbirds but barn owls, tawny owls plus kestrels. Our duck tubes have also proved very popular – they are designed to prevent access from mink and rats, boosting the survival rate of the mallard ducklings. Many of the tubes will host multiple nesting attempts, it’s amazing how the duck finds the entrance, but they soon learn! They are remarkably snug inside with a hay lining and nest. Up in Esthwaite, Cumbria, Mike Thornley’s Osprey Project has involved the creation of artificial nest platforms high up in the tree canopy, one is even made from an old bread box. This year, hopefully we will have fledged record numbers and again, cameras have recorded them fledging and setting off on the long journey to Africa. Fingers crossed they return in a few years to join their parents and breed! One of last year’s males decided, somewhat unwisely, to stop off en-route back home, at the Tickled Trout at Preston using the bridge as his roost. This didn’t end well and shows the value of providing safe breeding venues to maximise fledging success. Over in the East, Gareth Dockerty has

lifestyle teamed up with the gamekeepers again this year and is coordinating and planning another amazing year of #LetsLearnMoor. The staggering statistics include 1400 primary school children and their teachers, from over 50 schools, visiting seven different upland locations with over 30 partner agencies involved. This project started with funding via the ‘recovered criminal cash’ fund from North Yorkshire Police and has evolved to be supported by a full range of partners and BASC legacy money. The sight of these youngsters enjoying a full actionpacked day of activities and learning all about upland grouse moor management is immensely satisfying.

YOUNGSTERS HAVE BUILT COUNTLESS BIRD BOXES AND PLACED THEM ACROSS GAME AND CLAY SHOOTS ACROSS THE NORTH OF ENGLAND, MANY FITTED WITH CAMERAS Closer to home, the grouse moors of Bowland should be looking stunning this time of year, but yet again heather beetle is threatening to take its toll in many areas. The beetle’s larvae ‘ring bark’ the stem of the heather killing the plant, its only real predator being a very small species of wasp. Many moors are under a number of projects to try and re-wet by blocking gullies and slowing the run-off of water in times of high rainfall. Fingers crossed for a good grouse year – some moors will shoot a sustainable surplus but many will not, opting to leave the grouse for another year. This is the rub, the same amount of money and effort is invested into the moors, whether they shoot or not, commendable levels of investment supporting isolated rural communities. So, it’s with a real sense of optimism, with light at the end of the tunnel we come out of this terrible year. Nature certainly doesn’t stop for anything and we can be proud we made excellent use of our time supporting our amazing wildlife in the Ribble catchment and beyond. n

MAKING PLANS… With the announcement that restrictions could be lifted on weddings from 21st June, there has been more than a flurry of interest and enthusiasm from couples who are longing to plan their dream day

A

s we gradually emerge from the past 12 months, we can start looking ahead – and we can begin to make plans! If you’ve recently got engaged, or your plans for a 2020 wedding had to be put on hold, you may have spent months in the dark not knowing which venues are going to be open, how many people they can cater for and if they have dates available for your special day! With the Prime Minister recently announcing his roadmap out of lockdown,

which includes new rules for weddings, summer nuptials with unlimited guest will hopefully return as restrictions are lifted from 21st June.

HERE IN LANCASHIRE WE HAVE SOME FIRST CLASS VENUES – FROM BIJOU, BOUTIQUE HOTELS TO ELEGANT, GRAND COUNTRY HOUSES, THERE’S SOMETHING TO SUIT EVERYBODY At the moment weddings allow for a capacity of just six since 8th March, but the gradual easing of numbers allowed to attend wedding ceremonies will be increased in a four-step plan that will still see social distancing in place. Many couples have understandably, found renewed optimism – a popular wedding planner app saw a huge increase in traffic before the site crashed on the evening of Boris Johnson’s announcement. So, if you

are planning a wedding, now is definitely the time to start the process in order to secure the venue of your choice and all that goes with it. Here in Lancashire we have some first class venues – from bijou, boutique hotels to elegant, grand country houses, there’s something to suit everybody. And, they have all used their down-time well – from putting safety measures in place to ensure guests feel comfortable when gatherings can take place, to re-thinking and re-working the venue space to create beautiful, unique rooms and stunning, outdoor spaces. As we head through spring, summer lies ahead so there’s still time to book an appointment to be shown around numerous venues to find the right one for you. From finding the perfect dress to fabulous flowers, and everything else in between, now’s the time to draw up that list and start to enjoy planning your wedding – at last! n

UCLAN ANNOUNCES EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP

LAL’S FAMILY LEARNING IS A LIFELINE

An innovative partnership between UCLan and a growing sports website has been launched to help journalism students get their first step into the industry. The link with Prost International will give students an opportunity to improve their writing and editing skills, putting into practice what they learn on their degree course. They’ll then have their work published and promoted by the site which is based in England.

A mum-of-two from Thornton Cleveleys has praised Lancashire Adult Learning’s new homeschooling offer as a lifeline. To support working parents who are balancing professional and/ or caring commitments with schooling their children from home, English and Maths classes are being offered online free of charge and flexibly by year group by LAL’s expert Family Learning team, ensuring children don’t fall behind in their education.

WORLD BOOK DAY

TOP TENNIS TEAM

In March, Kirkham Grammar Junior, Infant and Pre-School pupils attended school dressed in their pyjamas to celebrate World Book Day with the theme ‘Bedtime Stories’. They had an action-packed day making a puppet theatre, creating a turn of turtles and smash of jellyfish, sharing and reviewing favourite books and producing enthralling iMovies. The pinnacle of the day was the sing-along around the fire pit with marshmallows.

Stonyhurst and its director of tennis have won two major Tennis Lancashire Awards taking them through to the regional sector of the LTA National Tennis Awards to be held later this year. The annual Tennis Lancashire Awards were held in February and winners were revealed in an online awards ceremony on Lancashire Tennis Award’s social media. The awards are presented each year, with coaches, volunteers, clubs and other tennis venues being nominated by individuals across the county and then decided by the awards committee of Tennis Lancashire.

MARATHON FOR MENTAL HEALTH Two students from Westholme School, Tilly and Lucy, walked a marathon on Thursday 18th February to raise awareness for mental health. They walked around Blackburn to complete the marathon in just over 10 hours to fundraise for The Mental Health Foundation. The day was a great success and an incredible achievement as the students raised over £7,000 for a wonderful charity.

MYERSCOUGH ALUMNI WIN Myerscough alumni Mate Okros and Amari Williams helped the Drexel Men’s Basketball team capture its first Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Championship in school history. With it, they now book a trip back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years. Okros scored a team-high 14 points with four 3-pointers in the 63-56 win over eight-seeded Elon, who made an improbable run to the championship game.

LIFE IN THE COLD Students in Year 2 at Oakhill School in Whalley, have been learning about life in the polar regions. This inspired pupil Darcy to channel her artistic skills and use her artistic flair to make a polar bear collage at home with tissue paper. Her smile says it all. Great work Darcy!

STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD

ROLE MODELS IN SPORT

Seven pupils from Oakhill’s Year 10 recently participated in the Churchill Public Speaking Competition. This was their first ever experience of a public speaking competition and they were against schools who had all competed in numerous events before. The judges who gave their feedback, said they should all be proud of themselves as they were excellent and was surprised to hear it was their first ever competition.

The SPAR Lancashire School Games recently called for girls and women across the county to take part in motivational activities for International Women’s Day 2021. The main goal for the games was to ensure it was a fun way to stay active and make the games inclusive for all young people, especially girls.

More businesses are benefiting from Myerscough College’s Leading Lancashire management programme. One recent success story is Alexandra Davies. Alexandra works at Wild Discovery at Ribby Hall Village, who found the course looked at different sides of management and training. The project is already making a difference to Lancashire employees ensuring they gain the necessary skills to either become first-time managers or lead a team.

As part of World Book Day celebrations, pupils at Bolton School Girls’ Division Senior School have enjoyed a writing competition aimed at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The budding writers’ entries were co-judged by former pupil and author Kate Long, who became a household name after publishing her first book, The Bad Mother’s Handbook. She has since written another eight novels as well as short stories, blogs and non-fiction articles.

School children in Lancashire discovered how life has changed in their neighbourhoods thanks to a new research and public engagement project from the University of Central Lancashire. To coincide with the upcoming national census, pupils from St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, in Preston, and Kirkham St Michael’s Church of England Primary School looked at previous censuses and created stories about what life was like in previous times.

t the start of the new school term in January, the grounds and historic buildings of Rossall School in Fleetwood were quieter than usual. With Covid-19 restrictions still in place, the only pupils able to attend this leading independent school were children of key workers and a selection of boarders. Behind the scenes though, the excitement is as fervent as ever. Whilst teachers deliver their universally-acclaimed online lessons to the school’s four to 18-year-olds, work is being done to improve even further its already impressive facilities. The Nursery and Pre-Preparatory School, which take children from three months to seven years old (up to Year 2)

are now housed in a newly renovated building designed specifically to provide a stimulating, welcoming and safe environment for these age groups. An expanded baby room, new nursery hall and refurbished classrooms, each with direct access to a magnificent outdoor play area and garden, all combine to make this the ideal place to encourage youngsters to learn, develop and play together.

ROSSALL IS SET TO BECOME AN ALL-STEINWAY SCHOOL, JOINING AN ELITE GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL AND MUSICAL ESTABLISHMENTS AROUND THE WORLD “The children have access to the beach and all the impressive arts and sports facilities on campus, not to mention our own petting farm with its pygmy goats, giant Flemish rabbits and guinea pigs. Later this year, Rossall is set to become an All-Steinway School, joining an elite group of educational and musical establishments around the world and reinforcing its commitment to provide the best quality music education. Once it receives its All-Steinway status, every single piano used at the school will be made by this globally-recognised piano manufacturer. Rossall’s International Piano Academy launches in March and scholarships will be available for musically-gifted pupils, providing the opportunity for them to combine first class music tuition alongside their outstanding academic education, delivered in a dynamic and supportive school community. Headmaster Jeremy Quartermain comments: “We are proud of our academic record but what sets us apart is that, wherever your child’s interests or talents lie, we encourage them to take full advantage of the facilities and activities on offer in order that they may reach their full potential and get the most out of every day of school life.” n

orty-seven-year old Vinny Scarantino had worked as a project manager in mobile telecoms, when in 2006, out of the blue, she was made redundant. But for this inspirational woman, it was an opportunity to drive her passion – classic cars. Originally from London, Vinny studied at UCLan, made some lifelong friends and decided to stay in the area. “When I was younger, I had always been told that little girls don’t play with cars, but I loved classic cars,” says Vinny. “Particularly VWs, so within two weeks of being made redundant I had bought my first camper van and in three weeks I had set up a limited company – Chase the Sun.”

For one Preston businesswoman, being made redundant opened up a whole new career, which, despite the pandemic, continues to go from strength to strength, writes Tracy Hargreaves

WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF BEING MADE REDUNDANT I HAD BOUGHT MY FIRST CAMPER VAN AND IN THREE WEEKS I HAD SET UP A LIMITED COMPANY Initially the business was self-drive for people to hire out for holidays. “I had looked myself to hire a VW camper van,” she said, “but realised there was a gap in the market at the time. I thought if it’s something I want to do then other people might want to do the same. Because there were very few businesses like mine in the country, it was hard to get set up with insurance and also convince people that this was a great way of holidaying.” But with no other income to fall back on, Vinny relied on advertising to get her company established. Soon she was up to three camper vans, with people hiring them to take all over the UK and abroad.

business

“The great thing about being based in Preston is that it’s handy to get to virtually anywhere.” Eight years ago, Vinny decided to diversify her business away from self-drive into weddings. “Couples were looking for something different for their wedding day,” says Vinny. “I’d had a couple of enquiries for the weekend use of a camper van to use as a wedding car and saw this as another opportunity. I had to change all my vehicles so they were more aesthetically pleasing for weddings, but eventually I wound down the self-drive side of the business.” However, in March 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson made the announcement that everyone dreaded. We were in the middle of a pandemic and everything had to close. “My bookings went to nothing, instantly,” says Vinny. “It was devastating to think of everything I had built up.”

classic camper van, even if it was on their drive, was completely different.” Eventually people began to hire them out for birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions, so once again, Vinny came up with yet another initiative. “I decided to start Vinny’s Bar. I have an old Beetle truck, of which there aren’t many in the country

I DON’T HAVE ANY FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS IN ENGINEERING OR MECHANICS, EVERYTHING I’VE LEARNT HAS BEEN SELF-TAUGHT

But once again Vinny saw an opportunity to diversify. “I had four classic cars sitting there and had to do something, so I came up with Driveway Dreams. It was a chance to hire out a camper van to keep on your drive and just sleep in it. It was something quirky but actually proved really popular. People were getting fed up of staying within their own four walls, so to spend the night in a

and kitted it out as a bar, which people could have at their house. No one was going anywhere and home entertainment was on the increase, so this seemed like the ideal solution.” In addition, she also introduced optional extras such as a hot tub, pizza oven and even an outside cinema. As well as running the business, Vinny also maintains and services all the vehicles. “I don’t have any formal qualifications in

engineering or mechanics, everything I’ve learnt has been self-taught, but it’s what I love and am passionate about.” VW camper vans are definitely a big part of the family. Her two girls 13 and 11 love going to Lytham St Annes in them and waking up by the beach and Vinny uses them for the weekly shop and the school run. “My girls know I’m not a conventional mum and know that I’m happiest with my vans or making something for them and that’s what they will remember.” With weddings and events the first things to stop and will be the last things to open, it’s been a tough 18 months for Vinny. “I don’t think I will see any wedding bookings until May/June, so I’ve had to change what I offer in order to survive. In 15 years, I’ve certainly come a long way from working in telecoms, when I was responsible for the network installation of mobile masts for 3G, but I wouldn’t change a single thing.” So, a motto from Vinny. “Don’t give up on your dreams, even if someone tells you it’s not for you. Having a passion for something will see you through.” n

NEW START-UP BUSINESSES IN 2020

NEW FUNDING FOR HARRIS QUARTER

RIBBLE CYCLES APPOINTS HEAD OF CREATIVE

Preston City Council has been awarded £20.9m from the government’s Towns Fund for a series of regeneration projects within the city’s Harris Quarter. The funding will support redevelopment projects highlighted within the new Preston City Investment Plan which sets out a bold 15-year vision to transform the city. The Harris Quarter includes buildings, public spaces and streets surrounding the Harris Museum, Guild Hall and bus station.

Preston has led the way with more start-up businesses in Lancashire during 2020. Research by Inform Direct saw an increase on 2019’s figures, despite the implications and difficulties of Covid-19. The Chamber supports start-up businesses by providing opportunities and a positive business environment, in order to help start-up companies grow and develop.

Ribble Cycles has appointed Simon Picton as its new head of creative. Picton has previously worked for world-class companies including BBC, SKY and more recently at Red Bull Media House. Ribble’s appointment of Picton is aligned to a dynamic strategic vision and business plan which has seen an ever-increasing demand for its award-winning, world-class range of bikes.

AWARDS OPEN FOR ENTRIES The prestigious Red Rose Awards 2021 are now open for entries until Friday 20th August. Businesses can enter up to three categories. The programme of events includes a new look, new categories and new trophies – crafted by Lancashire engineers. The awards are judged by panels made up of independent business experts and sponsors. The grand final will take place on 25th November 2021.

BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS EXTENDED

BLACKPOOL AIRPORT BACK IN CHARGE

Blackpool’s annual Illuminations display is to be extended by two months for a second consecutive year. VisitBlackpool announced that the Illuminations season will start on Friday 3rd September and run until Monday 3rd January, 2022. The two-month extension is intended to give the resort’s hard-hit tourism industry an added boost with the Covid-19 pandemic expected to cause further disruption over the first few months of the year.

Blackpool Airport, owned by Blackpool Council is to bring the management and day-to-day airport operations back in-house. Transfer of the CAA licences to operate the airport into BAOL Company’s name and under its direct control, is an early step in achieving the airport’s longer term goals which are to maximise opportunities for growth and to ensure a long-term, sustainable future for one of England’s oldest airports and a key strategic asset for the Fylde Coast.

COHABITATION AGREEMENTS:

IS IT TIME TO POP THE QUESTION? Napthens Partner and Head of Family, Helen Lucking considers the question that couples who co-habit don’t often ask: ‘What happens if we don’t live happily ever after?’ It may not be romantic – but it is an important question

C

ohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type in the UK. It has become the norm for couples to live together before they marry and, of course, many couples choose to cohabit long term without getting married. There is an important consideration however, as cohabiting couples often mistakenly believe they share the same rights as a married couple. In reality a ‘common law’ spouse does not exist. If a couple are not married they do not have legal rights in a relationship unless there is a Statutory Declaration of Trust or a Cohabitation Agreement in place.

A Statutory Declaration can also be used to protect a previously owned home which a partner moves into, by either agreeing that the partner does not have an interest in the property, or if they do, to what extent. It is not uncommon for a couple to receive financial help from family members towards a deposit or perhaps property renovations. If for example, the financial contribution came from one person’s parents, the Statutory Declaration could stipulate that in the event the relationship ends, money is to be paid back to the parents from the proceeds of a future house sale.

Statutory Declaration of Trust

The Statutory Declaration relates only to the house, but a Cohabitation Agreement can cover a much wider net of important topics – anything from who keeps the car or the dog if the relationship ends, to who is nominated for death in service benefits,

This sets out agreements regarding property ownership. It could include terms such as how the mortgage will be paid. For example, one person pays more because the other provided the deposit.

through to who will pay the water bill. Although not the pillow talk of choice, for most cohabiting couples the question of what happens should a relationship end, is a conversation that really should happen. If the relationship is a long and happy one, then a Cohabitation Agreement can set out some ground rules to prevent future issues and can provide some security. If the relationship does end with an agreement in place, each person knows where they stand and this can avoid difficult discussions. For further guidance please speak to a specialist family lawyer for advice. n

MORE OF WHAT YOU LOVE Paul Agnew takes to the road in the Porsche Macan S and discovers a vehicle that is sleek and supple with an exciting, distinctly sporty feel. Photography: Roger Moore

ome cars simply ooze class and kerb appeal, others overflow with technological wonderment and gadgets, a few prefer practicality and performance … while there are those who list comfort, heritage and style among their USPs. But occasionally a car comes along that gives you all of the above. And then some. The Porshce Macan S is one such vehicle. It is, of course, always a plus to have a Porsche badge on your bonnet. Porsche is legendary, a global motoring brand par excellence – it never disappoints. With a name derived from the Indonesian word for ‘tiger’, the sleek Macan S is all about suppleness, speed, excitement, dynamism and fascination. It might be the baby cat in the Porsche

THE LATEST VERSION BOASTS SEVERAL STYLING CUES BORROWED FROM THE 911 The one I had the pleasure to meet, shimmering in the early Spring sunshine, came in sapphire blue metallic with a black leather interior, a host of state-of-the-art features and an infotainment system (Porsche Communication Management) to rank alongside the very best. A joy to behold. Would it be ok to call it a foxy lady? Who knows, who cares?

The Macan S is guaranteed to turn heads as you purr down the country lanes or coast along the promenade – it aches to be driven and enjoyed. So, let’s start with the fun bit, the aforementioned infotainment package that is capital-G Great, with a 10.9-inch full HD touchscreen designed for speedy swapping between its many and various functions, including Apple connectivity and a BOSE surround system. The touchscreen is fully networked as standard and includes online navigation with real-time traffic information through ‘Here Cloud’, mobile phone connection, two audio interfaces and intelligent voice control. Also as standard, are Porsche Connect Plus (with phone module and SIM card reader), a wi-fi hotspot and an array of new Porsche Connect services. Basically, everything you could possibly need, right there, just when you need it, including rear USB ports which are always handy. On then to the technical – the facts and figures, the optional specification. Expect the 3-litre V6 turbo-charged petrol engine to accelerate from 0-60mph

in just over five seconds and achieve a top speed of 157mph, with decent fuel economy too, all things considered. Also expect panoramic roof system, park/assist (front and rear), reversing camera and surround view, lane departure warning, 14-way electric front seats with memory, 21-inch sport classic wheels painted in

high-gloss black, 75 litre fuel tank, suspension management, power steering (plus), privacy glass, heated front seats, LED headlights as standard, a three-dimensional rear LED lightbar and automatically dimming mirrors (in and out). Not a new car, the Macan has been around for several years, since 2014 to be exact, but my has it stood the test of time? There have been upgrades and facelifts along the way and the latest version, for example, boasts a front fascia featuring several styling cues borrowed from the famous 911.

THE MACAN OUT-PERFORMS ALL COMPETITION WITH OUTSTANDING DRIVING PERFORMANCE

Staying on the external, you can also discover (standard and optional) a host of recent additions like designer wheels, bigger bumper vents, eye-catching new body colours and a general sportier feel. To add to the interior appeal is a cleaner-looking centre stack, a superb GT steering wheel (again based on the 911) heated windscreen, traffic jam assist, ionizer. The list goes on. As for the drive itself, the overall handling, steering and braking is sophisticated, precise and responsive, safety features abound and all-round comfort is a given. The Macan S suits every motoring need and, according to one auto magazine, it ‘out-performs all competition with outstanding driving performance.’ It can, of course, go off-road – but don’t feel obliged to. The Macan S is perfectly happy prowling the roads, preening itself as bystanders stop and stare. It’s a blast and a driving pleasure. n

BLACKPOOL NETBALL PLAYER REACHES FOR THE SKIES

T

wenty-six-year-old Eleanor Cardwell from Bispham, Blackpool, started playing netball in primary school at St Bernadette’s. Her mum encouraged her go along to the sessions after school. But she soon came to love it. Along with many of her classmates, she went on to play for Blackpool Netball Club for several years before getting a trial with and joining Lancashire Netball Club. She still lives with her mum, dad and sister, who is also into netball and her brother. “I just absolutely love the sport,” said Eleanor. “I think you need to be, to be so dedicated to it. I used to have to travel to Manchester regularly for training and it was long days training.” Eleanor was by now playing for the team Manchester Thunder and while at college she went forward to the regional trials, but didn’t get selected the first time, but was successful second time. At the time she played in the positions of goal defence and goalkeeper. “I went to a defensive camp in Loughborough and kept on being invited to more camps. I then represented England U17s in Netball Europe and got selected for a tour of Jamaica as part of the U19s. But I got dropped in the last cut for the World Youth Cup in 2017.

From a very young age, sport and netball was in Eleanor Cardwell’s blood. Today she is a successful player with England Netball, with more than 30 caps under her belt, writes Tracy Hargreaves “At the time I was at Liverpool John Moores University studying sport and exercise science, the training was very full on, so I took a step down from England in my final year and decided concentrate on studies.”

In 2017, she moved to Severn Stars, a netball team based at the University of Worcester and the University of Gloucestershire and played there for two years, before returning to Manchester Thunder, where most of her career has been spent.

I WENT TO ALL THE UNDER 17 TRAINING SESSIONS FOR GOAL SHOOTERS TO PRACTICE AND HERE I AM TODAY PLAYING FOR ENGLAND AS A GOAL SHOOTER Her change of position to goal shooter and goal attack came by chance back at Manchester Thunder, when one of the shooters in a training session had to go home and Eleanor was asked to fill in by her then coach Tracey Neville. The next morning, she received a phone call from Tracey to say that Eleanor was now the new goal shooter/goal attack for Manchester Thunder.

“I was 18 at the time,” said Eleanor, “but I wanted a challenge and knew I had to train hard, so I went to all the under 17 training sessions for goal shooters to practice and here I am today playing for England as a goal shooter and I’ve been a full-time player for England since 2016.” When Covid hit in March all training had to be at home. “It was hard to motivate yourself,” said Eleanor, “but you just have to do it.” The England girls were lucky to get back into camp in August and in October travelled to New Zealand to participate in a competition. “We did lose, unfortunately, but it was a great experience. New Zealand is the world number one team and we are a young team, but it really challenged us.” So, for anyone looking at getting into netball what should they do? “They need to love the sport. If they are going into training and they are not enjoying it, it’s hard work. Try it with friends and make sure you enjoy it.

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE TALL YOU CAN PLAY NETBALL WHATEVER BODY TYPE YOU ARE “You don’t need to be tall you can play netball whatever body type you are. The smaller ones will be the quickest and the tallest will stand in position and hold, but you do need good hand eye coordination. “The best thing is to give it a go, whatever your age. There’s even walking netball. And it’s not just for women, men can play too. There are two teams in England, that are just male players.” Unfortunately, the England Netball team won’t be participating in this year’s Olympics as it doesn’t feature. “I’m not sure why it’s not classed as an Olympic sport as there are so many countries that now play it and participation levels are really high. But we do play in the Commonwealth Games. So, what’s on the cards for 2021? “We are hoping to play against Jamaica in a four-match series and the Super League season starts in February. Hopefully, that will still be able to go ahead. England is currently ranked third in the world so it would be good if we can improve on that.” n

BRITS LOVE A BRAMLEY Winter for me always conjures up my favourite pudding, apple crumble and custard, using the best in season Bramley apples. But where did the humble Bramley come from?

B

rits love a Bramley – but what is its origin? The ultimate cooking apple has been grown in the UK for over 200 years. The original Bramley tree grew from a pip planted by Mary Ann Brailsford in Nottinghamshire in 1809. Perhaps meaning that the true name of the variety should have been ‘Brailsford’. However, as time passed and the tree kept producing delicious cooking apples, eventually the house was sold to a man called Matthew Bramley. A local plant nursery worker, Henry Merryweather, realised that this could be a valuable type of apple and began to take cuttings to produce more trees. They named the apple ‘Bramley’ after the owner of the tree. From such humble beginnings, two centuries of Bramley apple cooking and

baking have followed. And this year the Bramley is expected to be more popular than ever. Home baking soared during the early stages of lockdown one and British Apples and Pears expects the more recent restrictions and colder weather to have a similar, if not bigger, impact, driving up demand for Bramley apples and other baking goods.

THIS WONDERFUL ENGLISH APPLE IS ACTUALLY INCREDIBLY VERSATILE IN BOTH SWEET AND SAVOURY DISHES Ali Capper, executive chair at British Apples & Pears, comments: “Bramley apple pies and crumbles may be the traditional favourites, and just as popular as ever, but this wonderful English apple is actually incredibly versatile in both sweet and savoury dishes.” Bramleys are in season now. They have a beautifully sharp flavour and lots of juice. A cloud-like, apple ‘fluffiness’ can be created when Bramleys are cooked, hence their popularity for sweet dishes. They also contain malic acid which is perfect when

you want to tenderise tougher or cheaper cuts of meat. Bramleys also make a great substitute for other tart fruits in curries and some Asian dishes. Ali Capper continues: “Having grown in the UK for over 200 years, Bramleys have a unique heritage and remain the nation’s favourite cooking apple. This year, British growers handpicked an estimated 76 million Bramley apples from August through to late September.” With healthier eating riding higher on the consumer agenda than ever before, it’s important to remember exactly why ‘an apple a day’ has long been advised. Apples comprise of 86 per cent water, making them naturally hydrating, as well as being fibre-rich and releasing their energy slowly, helping us to avoid blood sugar spikes. What’s more, eating apples and pears supports gut health and encourages the growth of more friendly bacteria in the large bowel, essential for keeping a healthy gut in the long term. n If you are looking for something different to make with Bramley apples, other than a crumble, take a look at: http://greatbritishapples.co.uk/#recipes

BRAMLEY APPLE MEATBALLS WITH CREAMY MASH AND BRAMLEY APPLE, CRANBERRY SAUCE SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS For the meatballs: 1 Bramley apple, peeled, cored and grated 500g turkey thigh mince 1 white onion, finely chopped 1 tsp parsley (fresh, dried or frozen) 100g bread crumbs 1 egg, whisked Salt and pepper to taste 1 tbsp sunflower oil For the gravy: 30g butter 2 tbsp flour 400ml stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 30ml single cream (optional) For the Bramley apple and cranberry sauce: 4 tbsp of apple sauce (see recipe) mixed with 4 tbsp cranberry sauce

METHOD Mix together the ingredients for the meatballs and roll into roughly 30 walnut sized balls. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, add a little sunflower oil and fry the meatballs in batches until cooked through. Remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside. To make the gravy, add the butter to the frying pan and melt. Sprinkle over the flour and stir cooking for 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the hot stock and keep stirring until the gravy has thickened. Add the Worcestershire sauce, and season to taste. Pour in the cream, if using, and whisk. Combine the Bramley apple sauce and cranberry sauce. Serve the meatballs on a bed of creamy mashed potato, pour over the hot gravy and serve with the Bramley apple and cranberry sauce on the side.

Top meal prep tip Double up on meatball quantities and keep some pre-cooked in the freezer – simply thaw throughout the day and reheat in the evening.

Michelin-star chef Nigel Haworth has been hard at work concentrating on new projects as he continues to support local producers, suppliers and the hospitality sector, writes Gail Bailey

B

orn in Whalley, chef Nigel Haworth still has his food roots firmly established in the area and is totally committed to using the fabulous produce grown by local farmers and suppliers. With a focus on sourcing the very best and with sustainability at its core, Nigel champions the smaller producers and gives them continuing support by showcasing what they do. In turn, these high-quality products enable him to use his culinary skills to create outstanding dishes.

HAWORTH@HOME IS A DELIGHTFUL WAY TO ENJOY FINE DINING AT HOME “Quality is far more important than quantity,” Nigel says. “The lockdown has led to people having a different relationship with food. In the past decade there has been a focus on producing higher volumes of cheap food – now I see people getting excited about making their own bread and it excites me that people are now appreciating and looking at food in a different way.”

EXCITING TIMES FOR TOP CHEF Nigel’s passion for food and quality has taken him on a culinary journey, from his initial training in Lancashire to working in London, Scotland and Switzerland, before returning home to take over the kitchen as head chef at what was then Northcote Manor back in 1984. By 1995, Nigel was named Egon Ronay Chef of the Year and just a year later, gained his first Michelin star, which he has retained ever since. He spent an amazing 35 years at Northcote: “Northcote was a huge part of my life, but when I left it was the right time to hand

food&drink

over the reins and do something different, along with the opportunity to spend more time with my family,” he says. Never one to stand still Nigel has a number of new initiatives and projects he is developing. One of these has been the launch of Haworth@Home – a fabulous range of food boxes giving customers the opportunity to enjoy gourmet food with menus exclusively designed by the Lancashire-based chef, with his own original recipes. Using only the finest and ethically produced ingredients, they are prepared by Nigel and sent direct to the diners’ home for them to finish, plate and enjoy! The first boxes were launched in February and continue to be available on a weekly basis – and unsurprisingly they are selling out quickly. A typical box menu could include mouth-watering delights such as sourdough bread with black pea hummus,

Dorset char, with new season asparagus and wild garlic mayo with a delicious macaroon tiramisu for dessert. For those looking to step it up another notch, Nigel is also working with experts to offer a matched wine flight, cheese board and caviar.

I SEE PEOPLE GETTING EXCITED ABOUT MAKING THEIR OWN BREAD AND IT EXCITES ME THAT PEOPLE ARE NOW APPRECIATING AND LOOKING AT FOOD IN A DIFFERENT WAY The Haworth@Home gourmet boxes have already been hugely popular with one customer saying: “It was truly delicious, as to be expected from the culinary genius that is Nigel.”

111

While this past year has been difficult for many, in support of the wider hospitality industry Haworth@Home will be making a donation to Hospitality Action for every box sold – giving back to an industry he is passionate about. The TV and YouTube chef also grows his own produce at home, and in a further exciting project he is recording and live-streaming the Shed Sessions from a converted studio summerhouse, which allows him to demonstrate his culinary expertise and share via YouTube and social media platforms. n For further details on Nigel’s current and future projects visit: nigel-haworth.co.uk

HOW BUYING AND SELLING PROPERTY HAS CHANGED DURING COVID-19

T

he government has temporarily increased the nil rate band for Stamp Duty to £500,000 on residential property until 30th June 2021. From 1st July 2021 to 30th September 2021, the nil rate band will be £250,000, before returning to the standard nil rate band of £125,000 on 1st October 2021. These rates apply to buying residential properties whether you are buying your first home or have owned property before. The Stamp Duty holiday was originally introduced to stimulate the housing market amid the pandemic. Pre-lockdown, the property market in the UK was steady, neither stagnant nor buoyant. After the first lockdown, property demand rose significantly. According to the ONS, average house prices have increased during the pandemic, reaching a record high of £252,000 in December 2020, an increase of 8.5 per cent over the year. The ONS say the increase in prices may reflect the pent-up demand from people who had been unable to buy during the first lockdown, and changes to the types of property people wanted. Office for National Statistics (ONS) analysis during the first lockdown showed that one in eight households in Great Britain did not have a garden, and

The government has confirmed that the Stamp Duty holiday has been extended to the end of June 2021 for property purchases up to £500,000, rather than ending on 31st March as originally proposed, bringing relief for house buyers and sellers the UK House Price Index data showed the average price of detached properties increased by 10.0 per cent in the year to December 2020, compared with a 5.0 per cent rise for flats. Lockdown made many people realise they wanted more from their homes, in particular more garden and outdoor space and extra indoor space to work from home. Location also became an even more important factor, with more people wanting to buy homes in semi-rural locations and more sought-after areas, with scenic walks close at hand. The ONS say government support schemes, including the suspension of Stamp Duty on the first £500,000 of all property sales in England, may also explain some of the rise in house prices. Property prices and demand rose from July to November 2020 with reports of houses selling within days, sometimes even before the ‘for sale’ board had gone up. Even houses struggling

to sell pre-Covid were selling fast. However, with so much activity, backlogs formed for conveyancing solicitors and whereas previously a house sale could be completed in 10 weeks, the process was taking much longer. The market slowed from December, perhaps as buyers feared they would not be able to complete in time for the Stamp Duty holiday ending in March. According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) UK Residential Market Survey last month, sellers have been deterred from putting their homes on the market given the current lockdown restrictions. They also say the upward pressure on house prices shows no sign of easing and that sales activity is expected to rise in the coming months, helped by a reduction in lockdown restrictions, and concerns around a ‘cliff edge’ end to the Stamp Duty break being removed by the Stamp Duty holiday extension. n

ALL CHANGE FOR URBAN GREEN SPACE How may the UK’s urban green space be affected by the Environment Bill? Matthew Jones a senior associate with Forbes Solicitors explains

F

ollowing the UK’s official departure from the European Union on 1st January 2021, the Environment Bill is set to be one of the most significant pieces of legislation introduced by the Government. The Bill will have a significant impact on incentivising developers to ensure their developments are in biodiverse, ‘green’ areas of land and plan how the green space is maintained in the long term. How might that impact those living in urban green spaces? The proposed changes present both challenges and opportunities to developers when considering where to purchase land and how it should be managed. In most cases, new developments will now be required

to produce a 10 per cent increase in the ‘biodiversity value’ of the land. It is important to note that this increase must be maintained for a minimum of 30 years. Furthermore, when developers submit their planning application to the local authority, it must be accompanied by a biodiversity net gain plan. There may need to be new arrangements for management of the green spaces by arranging agreements with a ‘responsible body’ (such as public bodies, local councils or charities) to oversee the future conservation and bind future landowners.

DEVELOPERS WHO DISPLAY A WILLINGNESS TO INCORPORATE MORE GREEN SPACES INTO THEIR LAND WILL LIKELY TO BE PRIORITISED BY INITIATIVES TO DEVELOP GREEN HOUSING On the one hand, obtaining planning permission will be a longer process as developers will now have to consider how a plot of land can be made more biodiverse before purchasing it. On the flip side, recent data published by the Office for National Statistic shows that house prices rise by an average of £2,500 where they are located in urban green spaces and the pandemic has highlighted a greater desire

for people to live in greener and more diverse areas. Additionally, developers who display a willingness to incorporate more green spaces into their land will likely to be prioritised by initiatives to develop green housing. It may also be easier obtaining finance from lenders seeking to invest in biodiverse areas and it is also anticipated that the new emphasis on biodiversity will soon transition to infrastructure projects on a national scale. Developers who are quick to embrace the new planning requirements place themselves in a good position to capitalise and to potentially be in a more competitive position to win tenders for land. Many well informed developers are already well aware of the importance of the greener aspects of a build, and this new act will present a new way of considering some of the long term sustainability issues within a development project. If you are involved or interested in entering the residential property development market, please feel free to get in touch with Matthew Jones who is a Senior Associate within the Commercial Property Department at Forbes Solicitors. n Matthew can be contacted by telephone: 0333 207 1147, or alternatively by email: matthew.jones@forbessolicitors.co.uk

MARKET UPDATE With more buyers than properties for sale, Armitstead Barnett have agreed a good number of sales since the start of 2021, with people hoping to make the most of the stamp duty holiday, writes Hannah M Towers BSc (Hons) MRICS FAAV MNAEA, Partner and Head of Agency

M

any people have been considering selling their property but have been waiting to see what happens in the budget with stamp duty and what the return to more normal times might look like. The government have now extended the stamp duty holiday with the nil rate band up to £500,000 until the end of June 2021, then with a nil rate band being applicable up to £250,000 until the end of September 2021, and set out a path for getting us back up and running as far as possible. There is a shortage of properties coming to the market, which means there is a high level of demand for properties that are new to the market. The number of sales that are with solicitors is also higher than this time last year. Since the start of the year Armitstead Barnett have agreed two and half times more sales than the same period in the preceding year. Many vendors and purchasers were looking to move ahead of the initial end of March deadline. Our teams have been working diligently and relentlessly to make sure that every transaction is nurtured and moved along to give sales the best opportunity to exchange and complete

ahead of the deadline or on schedule, as far as possible. Coupled with this, we have seen a rise in demand for more rural properties, those with multiple reception rooms and open living, those with good sized gardens, land or in quieter spots. The rise of home working and making different lifestyle choices has really aided the rural property market.

THE RISE OF HOME WORKING AND MAKING DIFFERENT LIFESTYLE CHOICES HAS REALLY AIDED THE RURAL PROPERTY MARKET Our work has altered a little in recent times as we have many buyers and sellers in a ‘chicken and egg’ situation. We hear it daily: “We would sell, but we can’t find our next property.” The current Covid-19 guidance states that you can only view a property if you are in a position to make an offer. In many cases purchasers need to sell their own home before they can offer and therefore view. In this situation we understand that it takes a leap of faith but you will be well supported by the

Armitstead Barnett team. Our job is to manage expectations on timescales of both the buyer and seller, with the aim to facilitate a move. Sometimes that means slowing things down, or speeding things up to meet your needs. We are here to guide you every step of the way. We encourage those who are thinking of selling to place their home on the market and be in the driving seat, due to the current market’s strength and opportunity to save costs on your next move. We have various marketing options, from full marketing and exposure through to private listings – yes, sales are being agreed both on and off market. n

HOW TO CHOOSE AN ARCHITECT ZMA explain why it is vital to meet potential architects in order for them to understand you, your project and your priorities

W

e have been approached by potential clients in many ways including word of mouth, recommendations from past clients or builders, Google search, and the RIBA Find an Architect service.

Selecting the right architect for your project

It is important that you meet your architect prior to making your selection, rather than making your decision based on costs only. You will work with your architect for a number of months, sometimes over 12 months from the design phase until the end of the construction, and some clients will continue working with their architect for years building a working relationship to use on all of their future projects. It is therefore important that you feel you

will be able to work together for a long period of time.

YOUR ARCHITECT NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND YOU, YOUR FAMILY OR BUSINESS, THE WAY YOU WANT TO USE YOUR BUILDING AND WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE You need to like your architect, as you will welcome them into your life, home or business and you need to be on the same page. Your architect needs to understand you, your family or business, the way you want to use your building and what you want to achieve. They need to consider your taste, your likes and dislikes, and your priorities and you need to feel that you can ask questions if you are unsure or

if you do not understand. You will get the best out of working with an architect if you are open-minded, allow them to guide you, take their advice and you are both patient with each other. If you are choosing your architect from a shortlist, then have a look at their previous designs. Do you like their style? Do they create the wow-factor? Were they enthusiastic about your project? When evaluating multiple fee proposals, check if they are a true comparison of services. Make sure you understand the whole process with regards to what is and what is not included. Remember, it isn’t always about choosing the cheapest quotation, as you get what you pay for. If you haven’t found an architect through a friend, family or colleague recommendation, then view their testimonials, ask to speak to their previous clients, or see some of their drawings or portfolio. So, meet the architect, ask them questions, make sure you like them, and they understand you and your requirements. If you have a project in mind, contact a member of our team for a free consultation to discuss how to begin your dream project. n
