Welcome to our Christmas edition of Live Preston & Fylde – it’s a cracker! In this festive issue we meet some truly inspirational and talented people, we also have a series of luxury gift guides as well as a ‘shop local’ feature that encourages everyone to support the small shops and businesses within their community. It is vital that we do this – especially in times of hardship as well as reducing our carbon footprint to help the environment.

A person keen to help the environment is actor Erin Shanagher, who plays a leading role in TV’s The Bay, which is set in Morecambe. Emma Brereton talks to Erin, a keen charity worker, about her work and her campaign against fracking on the Fylde. Erin has also played roles in many popular TV dramas including Peaky Blinders. She is an inspirational character who has worked hard to achieve success.

Another well-respected, high achiever is Nisha Katona, who recently opened Mowgli in Preston. Mowgli is a ‘street food’ chain that has restaurants throughout the UK and Nisha, who received the MBE in the 2019 New Year’s Honour’s List, is passionate about introducing her customers to authentic Indian cuisine. Like Erin, Nisha is also involved in supporting regional charities and has to date, raised more than £1m. In times when supporting others has never been more needed, it’s good to see that Preston North End’s Community Education Trust (PNECET) is working hard on many local initiatives. The PNECET team are helping transform young lives by engaging with the community and educating young people, encouraging them to achieve their goals and being the best they can be. You can read all about PNECET’s work and how North End’s top footballers are playing a huge part as inspirational role models.

With the festive season on the horizon, the team here at Live Preston & Fylde wish all our readers a very happy and peaceful Christmas and we will be back in the New Year!

STAR OF THE SCREEN

Growing up close to the bright lights and vibrancy Blackpool is famous for, Erin Shanagher, youngest of four, was the spirited sibling in an already lively household. Influenced by her older brothers’ interests in martial arts and all things action, it was Friday night trips to the video shop with her dad that opened up her eyes to the world of acting and kick-started her dream of pursuing a career in the arts.

“My sister is the eldest and was usually doing her own thing on a Friday night so me and my two bothers would go to the video shop and pick out a film,” recalls Erin.

“It had to be something we all agreed on, so it was usually action-adventure like The Goonies, Big Trouble in Little China and Top Gun. We would rewind and rewatch the same film over and over until it had to be back. Film was sheer escapism for me.”

As a child Erin never made the connection that the people in the films were acting and that it was their job but once she realised that it could be something you do for a living, she couldn’t get it out of her head: “I have a distinct memory from when I was 14 when I was in my guidance and career class and I wrote down in a notebook, ‘I am going to be an actor,’ and I had blind faith that I would be.”

Erin explains she had no idea how she would accomplish her goal. There weren’t any performers in her family, she didn’t know anyone in the industry and she didn’t have anyone she could turn to for advice –as a schoolgirl living in Marton, she just knew it was what she wanted to do. It was when she left St Mary’s Catholic High School and auditioned to study drama at Blackpool and the Fylde College that her dream really started to take shape.

“Most of my friends were staying on at the school’s sixth form, I left everything I knew, I didn’t know anyone at Blackpool and the Fylde College but it was the only drama college in the area, so I went there.

“Audition day was like a scene from Fame.

You may recognise actor Erin Shanagher from her developing role in ITV’s The Bay, set in Morecambe, but her ambition began further down the coast in Blackpool, writes Emma Brereton
I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR THE WORK I HAVE DONE OVER THE YEARS. I’VE BEEN VERY LUCKY – YOU NEVER THINK AN OPPORTUNITY LIKE PEAKY BLINDERS WILL COME ALONG

I felt so out of my depth having had no experience apart from taking part in the odd school play. I had no idea what to do, I didn’t have a monologue or a song but I loved poetry, so I performed ‘Phenomenal Woman’ by Maya Angelou. I was 16, performing Maya Angelou poetry! Who did I think I was? I looked the audition panel dead in the eye and gave it my all.”

It was a winning performance because it secured her place, which turned out to be two of the best years of her life. So much so, that Erin has stayed in touch with the college and is now a patron, inspiring other students looking to start their career in acting.

“My days at Blackpool and the Fylde College, which is now Blackpool School of Arts, were wonderful. It was mostly practical work and so interesting. When I finished studying there, I took a year out before I applied to study Media and Performance at Salford University.”

The course at Salford put Erin through her paces but it was here she secured her first agent and for the next 10 years built up her acting resumé playing small parts in a number of television dramas, soaps and theatre. You name it, Erin has probably appeared in it – Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Casualty, Scott & Bailey the list goes on!

More recently, Erin memorably played a

grieving mother in Peaky Blinders, whose son was killed by Arthur Shelby in a boxing match and it was this casting that was one of her break-through moments.

“I am so grateful for the work I have done over the years. I’ve been very lucky –you never think an opportunity like Peaky Blinders will come along. The number of times I have had a casting director say: ‘Just you wait. When this airs, the phone will be ringing and ringing.’

OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS THE ACTOR HAS SPENT CHRISTMAS RUNNING A CHARITY CAMPAIGN THAT DONATES FOOD HAMPERS TO VULNERABLE CHILDREN ACROSS GREATER MANCHESTER

“And I will be sat there looking at my phone and nothing comes through. So, to now be part of the main cast in The Bay is a real, ‘pinch me’ moment.”

During those quieter times Erin has supplemented her salary with teaching. She was a lecturer for 14 years and she explains it’s more than likely she will have to do it again at some point as that’s just the way the industry is. However, the success of recent years, have allowed Erin to focus on her acting career full time.

“When I was a teenager of course I had

dreams of making it on the silver screen and who knows, that may happen one day but for now the dream has changed. To be able to work with an incredible cast in the north of the country close to family and friends, it honestly feels like I have won the lottery.”

It’s Erin’s strong northern ties that makes her proud to contribute towards our northern powerhouse of actors. She is also passionate about where she is from and very politically aware and has regularly joined demonstrations against fracking on the Fylde coast.

Over the last two years the actor has also spent Christmas running a charity campaign that donates food hampers to vulnerable children across Greater Manchester. It is a project she cares deeply about and intends to continue as long as possible.

Erin adds: “Over the years my dreams have shifted. Now it’s about being able to do great work and have the financial security that allows me to focus on my charity work. That’s the dream.”

Erin has played Karen Hobson in ITV’s The Bay since 2019 with her part growing over each series. Now one of the show’s main detectives, alongside Marsha Thomason, the pair are set to appear on our screens again in the New Year and we can’t wait to see what unfolds in the next coastal-set mystery. n

JOINT VENTURE

Having already decided they wanted either Karndean or Amtico in their newly created space, the client discussed various options with the Gainsborough team, considering what would work best to meet their requirements, and opted for Karndean Warm Brushed Oak. Running through multiple rooms in the house, this provided a warm and welcoming feel from the hallway seamlessly leading into the kitchen and living room.

Karndean’s Warm Brushed Oak is an attractive European oak design chosen for its delicate balance of long straight grain and beautiful ‘flowery’ grain. Its subtle texture, golden sand colouring and overall unassuming appearance make it suitable for a wide range of traditional and modern interiors.

One aspect Gainsborough Flooring is renowned for is coordinating projects with other trades people. This isn’t just for complex commercial projects but also many domestic ones, where there is a requirement for architects, builders, plumbers, electricians, kitchen fitters and decorators to collaborate to ensure the seamless completion and delivery of a project.

Having been in business for over 50 years Gainsborough Flooring has worked closely with numerous professional trades people throughout Lancashire, and therefore understand all the implications of a multifaceted project and the requirements and timescales involved.

A project recently completed in Fulwood benefitted from these skills and helped to ensure the installation of the flooring fitted perfectly around other aspects of the project.

A couple from Fulwood had decided to open their ground floor up by knocking through an internal wall and the flooring

was to run through the hallway into the kitchen, utility room and living room.

The client was familiar with Gainsborough Flooring and had already decided to approach them, but this was further validated as they were also recommended by the kitchen fitters Kevin Roper. Established in 1995 Kevin Roper Interiors specialise in bespoke kitchens and furniture, designing, manufacturing and installing kitchens, bedrooms, studies and all kinds of freestanding and fitted furniture.

Collaborations with other craftsmen and trades people has taken Gainsborough ahead of the game when it comes to first class flooring, writes Meena McDonald Gainsborough

The Brushed Oak design is also available in smaller planks which can be laid in a herringbone or block design for a more sleek and stylish look. When the flooring is laid throughout, it makes a very impressive and striking statement.

The stunning contemporary kitchen selected by the couple along with delightful teal blue chairs complemented the golden sand colour of the floor perfectly.

The style and colourways for this new kitchen are certainly on trend with the domestic flooring sector, where a lot more teal, bronze, gold and rose colours can be seen.

The new flooring has certainly lived up to the client’s expectations, being practical, durable, easy to maintain and clean, whilst looking absolutely gorgeous.

Go and see for yourself what Gainsborough Flooring can do for you, you won’t be disappointed. Their showroom, based in Preston city centre is filled with some of best products in the flooring industry. n

us to see exactly how our new kitchen would look. We had clear ideas about the type of kitchen design we wanted and that it needed it to be family-friendly and light and airy in its style. We also had a wish-list of bespoke features including hidden storage and a pantry – they delivered on it all!

Dinesh and Laura Alexander from Lytham, have experienced this first hand: “They took our vision for a bespoke kitchen and we couldn’t be happier with the result!

“From the moment we walked into the showroom and met Tiffany and Charlotte, nothing has been too much trouble and they have been so easy to deal with in such a down to earth and non-pushy way.

“We discussed our ideas with the team and this was then brought to life on a big screen with CAD virtual software, enabling

“Once we’d agreed the design and the cabinets were being built, we were invited to their workshop to view the kitchen in real size and in the actual layout it would appear in our home. This was a fantastic, unique experience for us to move around the space and use it as we would in our own kitchen! It’s this level of service and innovative thinking that we loved about Frank Anthony Kitchens. Plus, as a result it prompted us to move the height of the oven!

“After this, Frank Anthony Kitchens’ installation team led by their time served joiner Jason, began fitting everything in situ with their chosen construction team.

“To fit the style of our Edwardian semi, we asked for traditional, bespoke Shaker style cabinetry encased in a panelled frame,

THEY TOOK OUR VISION FOR A BESPOKE KITCHEN AND WE COULDN’T BE HAPPIER WITH THE RESULT!

but with this we also still wanted a modern feel. Another personal touch available with Frank Anthony Kitchens is that we were able to choose a bespoke colour for our cabinets which fits perfectly with our modern worktop and the light herringbone wood floor. Frank Anthony also sourced us AEG appliances and a Quooker hot tap.

“One of our special requests was for a ‘breakfast’ cabinet to hide away appliances and condiments as well as a bespoke pantry –the skill in making these was second to none, as were the hand-crafted draw liners made to fit all our cutlery.

“Our new kitchen is just a perfect functional, yet homely, family space for us and that’s down to Frank Anthony Kitchens.

“Every single person we have met has been completely dedicated to their craft and so friendly and reliable – they absolutely gave us the best service from start to finish so I can’t recommend Frank Anthony Kitchens enough.”

Co-owner at Frank Anthony Kitchens, Charlotte Cooper, added: “Traditional features can work well alongside the contemporary and we work hard to ensure that every kitchen blends seamlessly.

“We have strived to build a business that caters for customers who want a Britishmade kitchen and those who are seeking a hand-made kitchen which is totally unique.

“Our unique approach to innovative, intelligent design and our dedication to traditional craftsmanship is well-known and well-respected – once you’re a customer of Frank Anthony Kitchens you are a customer for life!” n

ART THROUGH THE GENERATIONS

to figurative, oils to pastels, the selection is truly diverse.

Founded in 2005 by father and son team Clive and Giles Hepplestone, and with third generation George joining the business in 2020, the Hepplestone Fine Art Gallery was born from a passion for quality art. As avid collectors, Clive and Giles recognised that the high street was dominated by galleries specialising largely in prints and sought to bring both affordable and collectable, original paintings to Lancashire and the North West.

In fact destiny may already have been set back in the 1970s when the Hepplestone family located to the village of Mottram in Longdendale with a certain Mr L S Lowry as the neighbour across the road!

The gallery has grown to become one of the UK’s leading

retail art galleries and is a multi-award winner of the Fine Art Trade Guild ‘Retail Art Gallery of the Year’. All of the artwork on display is hand-picked by the Hepplestone team, ensuring a wide selection of both subject matters, and styles, tastes and ages. From landscape

FLAIR, INSTINCT & EXPERIENCE

Nita Patel of Petal Interiors says that following a few simple design rules and resisting the urge to follow trends can deliver a timeless style that never goes out of fashion, writes Meena McDonald

Agraduate of Leeds Beckett University where she studied Interior Architecture Design, Nita Patel started her career with a highly regarded design agency honing her skills across a wide range of commercial and domestic projects before setting up her own agency in 2011. Since founding Petal Interiors, she has worked on projects both domestically and internationally, building a reputation for creating logical, ergonomic spaces oozing with timeless style.

With more than 20 years’ experience designing spaces, Nita is clear in her approach to projects: “Our spaces are personal, whether it be the vision of a lifelong dream in the commercial environment or the safe,

comforting surroundings of home, our spaces need to work with us and not against us. Our mission at Petal Interiors is to guide clients and bring dreams to life.

“Most of our clients have a good idea of what they want from a project but are often unable to execute or articulate those ideas. That’s where we come in, we process all of those thoughts and ideas to offer structure and solutions.”

Since establishing the company, Nita has worked on over 100 large-scale projects across varied disciplines and locations: “Our work ranges from transforming heritage hotels to updating family homes and large-scale commercial spaces. It is possible you have enjoyed one of our spaces without even knowing it. Our work has included opticians, wedding venues and restaurants so you may have stayed in one of our handmade beds or enjoyed gelato sitting in one of our bespoke booths.

Nita says it’s not simply a case of choosing fabrics and paints colours: “It’s easy to underestimate the time and energy that goes into making a space work in terms of design and layout before we even consider the more decorative dressing of a space. There are simple rules we should all follow around accessibility, lighting and traffic flow that are often overlooked but are key to making a space work for us. The decorative work is so much more subjective.”

“Commercial projects tend to be more straight forward in terms of configuration and design but there is less scope for creativity due to regulations. Domestic projects open broader possibilities and personalisation. We learn all we can about our clients’ lifestyle, personal style and aspirations and try to balance their ideas – some may not always have matching tastes themselves!”

So how do Petal Interiors go about executing their designs?

“We have a network of trusted suppliers and tradespeople, some of whom we have been working with for over 20 years. Most of our partners are based here in the North West, sourcing materials from around the world.”

Working with an interior designer can sometimes feel like letting go but Nita has some advice for anyone looking to engage with Petal Interiors or any other professional design service: “Remember why you started to create a dream space that works for you. As trained professionals our experience will help guide you to the perfect solution. Remember to get the space right first, worry about the detail later and trust your designer!” n

perfect for any room with festive lighting and the glow of candles. We’ve added two bronze candle holders to each side.

Glassware is next! We decided to keep the Nkuku theme and go for these gold rimmed champagne and water glasses, as well as a decanter for those who may prefer wine. These are textured too, which adds another element to the table.

HOW TO DRESS YOUR CHRISTMAS TABLE

Here at Emporium Interiors, we know that Christmas can be stressful. When you’ve got the whole family arriving and the cooking to think about, the little details can often get forgotten. That’s why we’ve come up with some top tips for how to dress your Christmas dinner table to impress your guests!

The first major tip we have is to prep! Fail to prepare, prepare to fail as the saying goes! Decide your colour scheme early on and which table you’ll be using. We’ve decided on this burnt orange and bronze colour, which adds warmth. You’ll also need to think about whether you’ll use a table cloth, or a runner – or is your table interesting and unique enough not to need covering? We have decided to go ahead with this incredible blue Bone Iona dining table, made from carefully placed, reclaimed bamboo with a glass top. Due to its gorgeous detailing we decided not to cover it and just go for a centerpiece, which is the main attraction – so let’s make it stunning!

We’ve chosen a tall, sleek Nkuku lantern with a plain candle inside, simple yet beautiful. We also added some small baubles to the bottom and a garland over the top too.

We decided to stick with the theme of tall, narrow, glass items for the center. Anything with a narrow base is ideal for your display, as this doesn’t use up valuable space!

With a circular table, it is inevitable that your guests will sit facing each other. The glass in the middle means that your guests can still see each other without a large centerpiece blocking the way! The glass also creates a light, reflective surface –

Last but not least, we have the crockery. Starting with the base, we’ve added a wicker placemat underneath two different sized, white plates to add another texture into the mix. Layer your plates to give them a little bit more height and dimension. We’ve also placed a very simple orange napkin on top to complete the look, with a small ornament tied around.

IF YOU HAVE ROOM, THESE LARGE NKUKU BAUBLES HANGING ABOVE THE TABLE WITH TEXTURED VELVET RIBBON JUST ADD THAT EXTRA MAGIC!

If you have room, these large Nkuku baubles hanging above the table with textured velvet ribbon just add that extra magic, but can also just as easily be added into a window as an extra decoration throughout the festive season!

We’d recommend setting up your tablescape on Christmas Eve, just to save you that little bit of time! Stick to these top tips, and we’re certain your table will stun your guests this Christmas and prove that you really are the hostess with the mostest! n

We’re both proud Lancastrians and Leigh Lambert’s wonderful, nostalgic northern scenes really strike a chord with us. The timeframe may pre-date us a little, but Leigh’s realistic urban geography appeals to this day. The monochrome backdrops

Ukrainian artist Andrei Protsouk is firmly established as a gallery favourite. His new signed, limited-edition print Piano Bar is classic Andrei. The characters are wittily observed and stylishly painted in Andrei’s distinctive style. Which one of us wouldn’t like to imagine playing the piano and carrying it off with such elegance? The artwork has great physical dimensions and would certainly be a talking point in any room.

If you’d like your walls to display any of our artwork, please do call into the gallery or visit our website and social media platforms.

Sophie and I would like to wish you and your friends and families a Happy Christmas and very best wishes for a healthy and happy 2023.

As many of you know, Sophie and I married in the summer and we were overwhelmed by the enormous number of good wish messages we received from gallery friends, customers, artists and suppliers. Thank you so much.

As we start our married life in Longridge, we are turning to the question of what to exhibit on our own walls. So, we thought we’d share some of our current favourites.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY…

“One morning I woke up, looked in the mirror and realised I had all of a sudden just aged so much. It was an awful experience. It was particularly my lower face that had just gone, I felt so old. It was such a shock and completely affected my confidence. I had read EMA’s articles before and intended to book some treatments. This just pushed me to do it earlier. I can honestly say it’s been the best decision I’ve made this year. Thank you so much Emma and I’ll look forward to my next treatment.”

Lydia M.

“My neck, jowl and lip lines were really concerning me but I put off having treatment, feeling I was too old. Emma totally reassured me and it’s the best decision I’ve made. LOOKING FRESH FOR A NEW YEAR

you’re looking to freshen

Dr Grant says: “The most important issue to address in people who are in their 40s and beyond is the sagging of their facial features.

When choosing a clinic for your aesthetic treatments, it’s vital that you look closely at the qualifications and reputation of your practitioner.

Dr Grant McKeating has worked as a hospital consultant for nearly 23 years, and in aesthetic medicine for 10 of those. You can trust him to deliver a safe and expert treatment.

Firstly, you’ll have 30 minutes set aside with Dr Grant in RejuvaMed’s Clitheroe or Chorley clinic for a full consultation to discuss your concerns in detail. He will then recommend and discuss suitable treatments for you.

“As you age you lose fat and bone, and treatments that give lift and restore volume are the most important. Careful use of dermal fillers in a full-face rejuvenation, or the use of new technology such as Morpheus8, can subtly transform your appearance. Make sure you see someone medically qualified in an established clinic, who doesn’t just visit a local salon once a month. Good aftercare is vital.”

Dr Grant offers wrinkle relaxing treatments, non-surgical facelifts and treatment of facial thread veins (see images) amongst other anti-ageing therapies. n

Delivered by consultant vascular surgeons Mr Vittorio Perricone and Mr Rob Salaman, RejuvaMed offers the only dedicated varicose vein treatment centre in Lancashire. With a nationwide reputation for quality care and exceptional results, the centre is now established as the leading provider of varicose vein treatment in the North West at prices way below Lancashire’s private hospitals.

Mr Perricone and Mr Salaman have both worked within the NHS and privately for more than 25 years, and they now consult privately solely at RejuvaMed.

As Dr Grant McKeating, RejuvaMed’s

Medical Director explains, the centre offers a real alternative to the NHS: “Funding for treatment for varicose veins has been rationed by the NHS, meaning patients often have to pay for their procedure. Where NHS treatment is available, waiting lists are incredibly long. We offer appointments within a couple of weeks and safe, relatively painless treatments with excellent results and minimal recovery time.”

As well as offering radiofrequency (RF) ablation treatment for varicose veins, RejuvaMed offers the innovative VenaSealTM procedure, which uses medical adhesive rather than a heat source to seal the diseased vein.

Normally priced at over £3,000 in other clinics and hospitals, RejuvaMed’s price is £2410 for one leg and £2725 for both. n

patients to see an accurate picture of how their teeth are going to move and how they will eventually look,” explains Usman.

Using Invisalign, which employs the latest, integrated ‘3D computer modelling’ software in conjunction with a custom-manufactured clear aligner system, senior cosmetic dentist Dr Usman Riaz of Renovo Dental, is able to outline a digital treatment plan for patients based on a sophisticated 3D image of their teeth.

From a computerised model of the patient’s mouth, Usman uses the latest digital planning technology to design each clear aligner stage, which is then sent for manufacture.

“This has the huge advantage that the fine movements required to achieve perfect alignment, are applied to the teeth from the very start of the treatment. It saves many months of return visits and also allows

Invisalign aligners are completely transparent and custom-made to predictably straighten teeth without using any metal or wire brackets. Advances in digital orthodontic technology has meant that this accelerated aligner system is taking up to 60 per cent off the normal treatment time.

typical adult completion period for aligner therapy at Renovo Dental is just nine months.

“Invisalign has a really different response time when compared to the classic train track braces and our patients get a real buzz when they realise how effective and simple it is – it can accomplish almost anything that the traditional orthodontic bracket and wires can accomplish.

“Obviously, Invisalign is a compliancebased product, so this is not an issue for our patients as their commitment to wearing the aligners is always great!

have become accustomed to this way of communicating. So, we are spending even more time looking at ourselves. A huge number of clients mention they had never really realised how noticeable and unsightly certain aspects of their smiles were until they saw the flaws up-close on a daily basis.

“We get many people from referral and recommendation – we treat one member of a family and the results are so impressive other members of the family, and their friends, often follow.”

RED CARPET TREATMENT

Usman adds: “The 3D imaging allows micro-rotations for an improved, but still natural look. The teeth don’t have to be absolutely aligned. For example, in the United States, they want teeth that are symmetrical, characterless and artificial.

“This has taken dentistry to a whole new level,” says Usman of the latest advancements in digital dentistry.

“Our ethos at Renovo Dental is to conserve original healthy teeth and straighten them in a natural way that is both gentle and effective. It is true, bespoke dentistry.”

Demand for invisible braces has soared, especially for patients in their 40s, who have been concerned about crooked teeth for many years. Renovo Dental has also seen a significant rise in demand for Invisalign in male patients.

The ‘Zoom effect’ has also had a huge impact on demand as Usman explains: “We are using technologies to communicate with each other more than we ever have.

“Many people have continued video conferencing and conducting meetings via Zoom and Facetime chats with family and friends have also continued. We

“However, we believe these little micro-rotations that can be done with 3D imaging, gives a more natural, healthy smile. At Renovo Dental, the goal of every smile rejuvenation is to design a bespoke smile that truly complements the patient’s facial features and seamlessly blends in.

“It is also crucial we don’t just look at the teeth in isolation, good orthodontics has the potential to not only straighten teeth but also to improve a person’s face symmetry, their profile and the health of their jaw joints. The smile must match the face.”

Renovo Dental treats patients throughout the region, who have been referred by their general dentist as well as self-referrals. n

Invisalign clear aligner treatments, such as those offered at Ribble Valley-based Renovo Dental, have proved ultimately popular with globally recognised celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Justin Bieber, Serena Williams, Khloe Kardashian, Zac Efron and supermodel Gisele Bundchen. AWARD WINNING HEALTH CARE PROVIDER EXPANDS TO BUCKSHAW

Independent health care can be an option for all, not just those with private health care insurance, writes Emma Brereton

Following a multi-million-pound investment in a new hospital, Ramsay Health Care UK is fast becoming one of the leading providers in private sector health care. The award-winning health care institution is also contracted by the NHS for the provision of selected procedures, offering more choice to those in Chorley and the surrounding areas.

With sites at Buckshaw and Euxton, its facilities provide a wide and comprehensive range of specialised clinical services from routine to complex surgery, day-case patients, diagnostics and physiotherapy.

Already well known in the health care industry for operating quality private hospitals and for its excellent record in hospital management and patient care, the clinics attract leading health care practitioners and consistently attain outstanding patient reviews.

“We are extremely proud of the high quality of our staff,” says Suzanne Arnold, at Ramsay Healthcare.

“Maintaining our admirable relationships with consultants and our commitment to constantly improve in all areas, is the basis of our ethos here at Ramsay. We value teamwork to achieve our aspirations and goals through sharing ideas and responsibilities in an environment of mutual respect and it is this set of ideologies that are passed on through to the care our patients receive when they stay at one of our hospitals.”

“The hospital specialises in orthopaedic procedures offered such as arthroscopy, hip, knee replacement and upper limb surgery and offers rapid access to breast care examinations,” adds Suzanne.

Euxton Hall Private Hospital opened in 1983 and is one of Lancashire’s leading private hospitals situated on the outskirts of Chorley with easy access to the M65, M6 and M61 motorways. It comprises 32 beds all with en-suite facilities to ensure complete privacy and, by investing in advanced medical technology, offers a wide selection of treatments. Furthermore, on site there are two fully equipped ultra clean-air theatres.

Buckshaw Hospital is the third day-case hospital to have been built and opened by Ramsay in the last two years. The new development, located at Matrix Park, is an extension of what is currently offered by Euxton and Fulwood Hall hospitals.

MAINTAINING OUR ADMIRABLE RELATIONSHIPS WITH CONSULTANTS AND OUR COMMITMENT TO CONSTANTLY IMPROVE IN ALL AREAS, IS THE BASIS OF OUR ETHOS HERE AT RAMSAY

Suzanne said: “The Ramsay team at Euxton and Fulwood are incredibly excited about the new hospital. Not only does it provide further capacity to treat patients in and around the local area, but it develops the service model we already offer in the North West, delivering the best care and patient experience.”

Facilities at the new Buckshaw site include two day-case theatres including a purpose-built Endoscopy Unit, an Outpatient Department equipped with six consulting rooms, large treatment room for one stop clinics, a Radiology Department as well as a Physiotherapy Department made up of four bays and four rooms. n

Rosacea symptoms

RED FACE RECOVERY

Rosacea typically begins as redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. A blood vessel disorder of the face, it affects women and men usually after they turn 30. Over time, redness often becomes ruddier and more persistent, and blood vessels may appear. Left untreated, pustules often develop, and in severe cases skin may swell and thicken.

“A lot of people are unaware they have Rosacea”, says Dr Montero. “They initially wonder why their skin is so red, flushed and suddenly prone to breakouts.

“These persistent symptoms, coupled with not knowing what’s causing them, can be very distressing. When I explain they have Rosacea and how it can be managed, this instantly gives them a sense of relief.

“Firstly, I use a skin-imaging system to look 2mm beneath the skin so I can make an accurate Rosacea diagnosis and then advise on the best combination of treatment.

“People travel to my clinic from all over the UK and beyond - they go to great lengths to get relief from their symptoms. Seeing someone’s self-confidence grow so dramatically by the end of treatment is just wonderful. It’s a real privilege to help.”

Dr Montero has been helping people with Rosacea since 2008 at his multi-awardwinning medical skin clinic. Using unique laser protocols and his own three-part treatment combination, he dramatically reduces Rosacea symptoms giving his patients long-lasting relief and increased confidence.

His patients are delighted with the results,

as one commented: “As a long-term sufferer of Rosacea, I have been delighted with the huge improvement.

“There has a been a significant reduction in flushing episodes - virtually to zero. Skin breakouts similarly are rare and by no means as distressing as they were before. Changes to my skin tone and appearance are definitely noticeable and have been commented on by family, friends and work colleagues.

“I had resigned myself to living with the condition before Miguel was recommended to me, and did not expect the vast improvements that he has managed to achieve in relatively few sessions.”

What causes Rosacea? - The exact cause is unknown. Blood vessels change, becoming leaky and over-responsive to stimuli such as sun exposure, heat, stress, anxiety, caffeine and alcohol.

Who is affected? - Rosacea affects about one in 10 people, usually starting between 30-60. Women are more commonly affected, but in men it can be more severe.

Can it be cured? - There is no permanent cure but laser treatments significantly reduce symptoms.

When should I seek treatment? Each sign or symptom may progress from mild to moderate to severe. It is best to get an early diagnosis and treatment with a knowledgeable medical practitioner or dermatologist.

SPEEDY ACCESS TO A GP

The combination of the pandemic and the shortage of GPs in the UK has made access to GPs challenging for patients, writes Meena McDonald.

To assist the local community, Spire Fylde Coast Hospital offers a private GP service which is easily accessible to patients who are struggling to access their own GP.

Mike Sarson, Director of Clinical Services at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital, comments: “Our aim is to provide speed of access to patients so that they can get in to see a GP quickly or at a time to suit them, who can assess, diagnose and refer them on to a specialist if required. Patients can either use their medical insurance to cover the cost or self-pay for a private GP appointment. The process is very simple and straight forward.”

Currently Dr Farzaneh Mani runs private GP clinics twice per week at the hospital. She’s very conscious of the immense amount of stress and anxiety waiting for a GP appointment can cause: “Being able to

have a face-to-face consultation promptly is so important to patients who need the reassurance that they can be seen and treated quickly.”

Additionally, she’s keen to reiterate that continuity of care is critical for all patients, and therefore visiting a GP at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital won’t affect the patient’s NHS care whatsoever. With the

patient’s consent, the hospital will liaise directly with their GP on any diagnosis, treatment requirements or referrals.

To speed up some treatments the hospital can refer patients internally for blood tests, scans and consultant referrals. All of these will be shared with the patient’s NHS GP so nothing vital is missed.

With an increasing interest in people wanting to use this service, it is highly likely to expand in the future to meet patient demand.

Spire Fylde Coast Hospital also has a range of diagnostic imaging services on site, along with a highly-skilled multidisciplinary team that includes consultant radiologists, radiographers and imaging assistants.

The hospital offers simple and complex scans for a wide range of clinical specialties including cardiac CT and MR, breast screening, orthopaedics and spinal surgery, gynaecology, urology, general surgery, vascular and ENT.

BY PROVIDING EARLY INTERVENTIONS PLUS FAST DIAGNOSTICS AND TREATMENTS, WE CAN HELP IMPROVE PATIENT OUTCOMES

They also offer CT and MR scans for chest, abdomen, thorax, pelvis as well as full body scans.

Mike Sarson continues: “Having the relocatable MR scanner on site permanently and the CT scanner one to two days per week ensures that we have enough capacity to provide timely diagnostic services, thus reducing wait times for our patients. The upgrade to the plain film x-ray equipment ensures that we have the most up to date equipment, allowing us to provide the highest quality images and high quality care to our patients.”

For private patients, the hospital is able to offer MR scans on the same day as their appointment with a consultant. This assists by decreasing the time-frame for diagnosis and treatment and provides an outstanding service for patients.

The diagnostic imaging services are available to NHS and private patients who are insured and self-paying patients aged 18 and above.

Spire Fylde Coast have invested circa £1.5m in a relocatable MR scanner and an additional £200,000 to upgrade the plain film x-ray equipment within the next couple of months to ensure they have the most up to date equipment so they can provide the highest quality service to all patients.

Over the coming weeks, there are plans in place to launch a cardiac MR service which will start with non-complex scans, such as non-stress cardiac MR scans. When this service is established there are plans in place to increase the service by offering more complex stress cardiac scans.

The hospital is preparing to introduce a ‘one-stop’ service for spinal patients, where, for a package price, they will get

an appointment with a consultant

and an MR scan on the same day. Following the initial assessment and diagnostic tests a treatment plan will be discussed, along with a fixed price fee package should surgery be required.

Mike concludes: “We are dedicated to delivering speed of access to treatment and the highest consultant care in the region. That is our promise to all our patients. By providing early interventions plus fast diagnostics and treatments we can help improve patient outcomes. Our fundamental goal is to enable people to live their lives as fully, healthily and pain free as possible.” n

Owner Michael Cookson explains: “My grandfather and father started hand making wreaths in the late 1950s and we are still at it today.” Not a lot has changed. All Newgate’s wreaths are hand made on site at the extensive plant nursery which is open to the public and trade seven days a week throughout the year.

We cut holly from sustainable sources, only lightly prune the trees, so we can keep going back. The holly is then trimmed to size by trained cutters and then mixed into handfuls with pre cut conifer. This is then skill fully wrapped onto a circular straw base. Eight or nine handfuls later the wreath is finished and ready for decorating.”

IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE…

The programme is now entering its fourth academic year and has seen exponential growth during that time – with 40 students enrolled on the programme during the 2019/20 period, compared to 136 now enrolled for the 2022/23 period from across 14 secondary schools.

Preston North End Community and Education Trust (PNECET) is the official charity of Preston North End Football Club, aiming to connect people, inspire generations and help people to achieve their goals through its life-changing work, which positively impacted 16,955 individuals in Preston and the surrounding areas last year.

The Trust’s work is delivered across its three key strands:

• Community engagement

• Education

• Health and wellbeing

These three strands enrich the lives of those the Trust reaches out to across the city. The Trust offers high-quality provision across all of its programmes, with the core aims of creating safer, stronger and more resilient communities, providing an education pathway for all to achieve their goals and to tackle the health inequalities across Preston.

HIGH SCHOOL

Preston North End Community and Education Trust has appointed a Secondary Education Youth Mentor, who will spend four days a week working in Southlands High School in Chorley, as part of a new and innovative secondary school education partnership between the two organisations.

The newly appointed youth mentor, Cameron Molloy, began work with PNECET in time for the start of the new academic year and will positively impact the school’s pupils by delivering a wide variety of interventions.

Within the education department, Cameron will form part of the secondary education team, which looks to support children who may struggle in the traditional school environment, or those who are displaying low confidence, self-esteem or educational attainment.

The partnership with Southlands has resulted from positive consultation with the school, in which a need for PNECET’s bespoke education provision – which supports learners from all backgrounds to pursue their educational goals – was identified.

Secondary School Curriculum Lead, Jake Blackburn, said: “We are pleased to have begun working in partnership with Southlands High School in Chorley to

positively impact the school’s pupils through a variety of educational interventions.

and especially football. PNE are our biggest and most successful local team and I think that really helps young people buy into this concept of pursuing excellence.

“As a school, we want to extend our pastoral team and bring a youth work angle, which Cameron brings.

“There’s a great history and tradition going back over 50 years of the school here at Southlands. We’re proud of that but aspiring to be better which aligns with the ethos and ambition of the club.”

lives as players at Preston North End.

It proved to be a mutually beneficial visit for both players and pupils – this the first made by members of the first team squad to one of the Trust’s partner primary schools in the 2022/23 academic year.

Following the visit, midfielder Ledson said: “It’s great to come and see the kids, it’s the least we can do. We went through a little gymnastics’ session and some stretching, it was good fun.

“By significantly growing our secondary school education programme for the 2022/23 academic year and agreeing our first in-school partnership with Southlands High School to place a staff member on-site, we are confident of continuing to deliver on our strategic aim of providing an education pathway for all.”

Southlands High School Headteacher, Paul Bousfield, added: “The presence of someone who is as skilled as Cameron in working with young people I think is really key because he can develop a positive relationship with our young people. Through that, he can support them and motivate them to excel and achieve their best.

“The fact that he wears the Preston North End badge and that’s attached to everything that he does, there’s a deep history of excellence around what the club has achieved over the years, and we can sell that as a brand to the students – hard work and the ethics of trying to be the best you can be.

“There is something exciting about sport

Ryan Ledson and Emil Riis made a special visit to Frenchwood Primary School recently to join a PE class of Year 6 pupils! Children at Frenchwood receive visits from Preston North End Community and Education Trust every week, as part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme.

“The kids are made up that we’ve come out, it’s a great day for everyone. You see how excited the pupils are, they’ll be going home speaking about it. We all love doing it and coming out to see the kids as they come down on a Saturday to support us at Deepdale.”

Primary Stars engages children through cross-curricular learning in PE lessons and the power and appeal of Preston North End Football Club and sport more widely.

It was no ordinary visit for the pupils in this instance, though, as Ledson and Riis got involved in their gymnastics lesson.

The pair joined the class for a short spell of exercises and stretching, before settling into a question and answer session, to provide pupils with an insight into their journeys to becoming professional footballers and their

With that in mind, there are a number of dates for the calendar taking place in the town during the run up to Christmas including ‘Carols at the Castle’ on 26th November. Clitheroe Town Council will once again arrange the ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ on Thursday 1st December and Ribble Valley Borough Council has festive markets planned to take place on the three Saturdays prior to Christmas Day.

Clitheroe has seen an emergence of several new businesses since the Covid pandemic. These now sit in perfect harmony with many familiar faces in town. And such harmonious existence has been amplified

by a post-pandemic resurgence of the local Chamber of Trade. Earlier this year saw the appointment of a new Chamber President, Lucy Greenhalgh.

That said, her entertaining social media profile, which regularly shows off her wide range of design-led gifts alongside her cheerful personality, suggests there’s definitely some level of playfulness. “Oh, well yes, that bit can definitely be fun,” she grins.

GOING FOR GOLD!

The

£3,000

Every week of the year, thousands of young people with a passion for their sport are transported around the country by their parents for training or competitions. Apart from their own dedication and hard work, it is the sacrifice of an army of willing volunteers and coaches supporting them that is vital to propel them to future success in their chosen sport.

One such local group hoping to compete internationally is the Fylde Coast Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior Group comprising 14-year-old Evie Bayes, Tallulah Crabtree, 13, Lucy Taylor, 13, Chloe Magee, 13, Alex Marshall, 13 and Lottie Cahill, 13. Four of the gymnasts, Lucy, Evie, Chloe and Tallulah, earned English and British Championship titles earlier this year. As a team, they are a formidable force.

As with many other sports, rhythmic gymnastics does not receive any funding. It’s one of those chicken and egg situations –without success and medals, there are no grants, but it costs money to achieve success. These girls train together at least four times a week for up to 20 hours. To chase their dream, they jump on trains and have long

car journeys straight from school but never complain. It’s a story that’s played out all over the country by thousands of young people devoted to their sports.

train so well together and are the best of friends, always supporting each other as part of the team. They have been trialling for the GBR Performance Pathway Programme and are awaiting the results and hoping to be selected for the Junior GB Group Squad for 2023. It would be a dream come true for them to perform their routines at international level overseas in countries like Estonia and Romania. These girls really are a credit to the club (Fylde Coast Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy) and to their coach Ana Blackburn who recently won Coach of the Year at the Fylde Council Sports Awards.”

Speaking for the girls, Angela Taylor and Leanne Bayes said: “The girls’ dedication and commitment is truly inspiring. They

Someone who knows just what it takes to succeed is Gabby Logan, who recently featured on TV in a video clip when she competed at national level, long before she became a famous BBC sports commentator. This sport is not for the faint-hearted.

Having seen these girls live in action myself, I am in total awe. It has completely dispelled my image of ribbon twirling dance routines, such is their unbelievable gymnastic ability, perfectly coordinated ball skills, all performed with such easy balletic grace. n

Hoping to raise £3,000 to compete overseas, the group needs help with travel, kit and competition fees so have recently launched a GoFundMe page accessible by searching for Fylde Coast Junior Group. For more information about the club please see Facebook: en-gb.facebook.com/FCRGA

FAMILY ARRANGEMENTS OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD

There is no legal formula to dictate what the arrangement should be. Some children enjoy two Christmas days – one with each parent. Some separated families alternate the arrangements on a yearly basis with one parent having the children from Christmas Eve until Christmas Day, then the other having the children from lunchtime on Christmas Day until Boxing Day.

a joint decision. Both parents generally share parental responsibility for their children, giving them an equal part in the decision making, irrespective of the amount of time the children spend with each parent. Do some research – schools open at this time of year for new parents to visit. Look at recent Ofsted reports, but also the practicalities of each school. Endeavour to have some constructive discussions but if it becomes clear you won’t agree, seek very prompt legal advice. If mediation is unsuccessful you can apply to court. Again, the court is determining an issue rather than the child’s parents.

Making arrangements for children over the festive period can be difficult in separated families. Here, one of Forbes’ Associate Solicitors, Sarah Robson, looks at the options when an agreement cannot be reached. Sarah also considers disagreements over school choices

Festivities are a special time for children – not just Christmas, but any special occasion celebrated by a family. Children want to enjoy the time without worrying about seeing their parents. Try to make arrangements well in advance. For families where parents have been separated for a number of years, there is often an established routine in place. For families facing their first Christmas as a separated family there is no precedent to follow.

If you are unable to reach an agreement, seek legal advice early so that solicitors can assist in trying to reach a compromise.

As a last resort an application to court is made for a child arrangements order. The family court is very stretched and the court would expect to see concerted efforts by parents to agree arrangements for their children. The court decides what is in the best interests of that child – a decision generally best made by the parents. Some families at this time are faced with the difficult decision of school applications. Secondary school applications have already been submitted for children starting school in 2023. Primary school applications close in January 2023 for children starting in 2023. Even if your child is in Year 5, if there is likely to be a dispute start the conversation now.

It is important to acknowledge that this is

Where parents are divorcing and one party seeks financial support to send their children to a fee-paying school, or to keep them at a fee-paying school, it is the rules of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 that apply. The court can make a school fees order, either by consent or by order.

For couples who have not been married, the court can make financial provision for the children under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989. These applications are more likely to succeed if the child is already at a fee-paying school.

If you are considering one of these applications or concerned about how the ongoing school fees will be paid after separation, then you will need specialist advice from a family lawyer. n

SHARING THE MAGIC THIS CHRISTMAS

Ribby Hall Village near Wrea Green is sharing the magic this Christmas as it donates over £5,000 to 11 local primary schools in a bid to alleviate some of the pressures being put on staff and pupils

Each year the five-star Ribby Hall Village looks to support local charities, teams and communitybased projects where they can. Following what has been a challenging few years for the county’s schools, with the continuing effect of the pandemic, staffing issues and now spiralling cost of living, Ribby Hall Village wanted to reach out to a part of the community that can often be overlooked, to donate more than £5,000.

Brand and PR Manager, Hayley Thompson, said: “Schools are at the heart of our community and are not only educating our young people but offering a safe space for

many children providing wellbeing support, hot meals and warm, safe environments with little or no extra funding.

Catholic Primary School in Warton are just three of the schools that have been visited by Ribby Hall’s Reindeer Reggie to meet teachers and pupils and share the exciting news.

“We are mindful that these are schools that grow and develop our employees’ children, that have educated many of our current employees as well as potential future employees. We are conscious of the overwhelming support we receive from local families, who choose to spend their time at Ribby Hall Village throughout the year. Their continued loyalty is hugely appreciated and we wanted to make sure we share the magic with them this Christmas.

All within two miles of the Holiday Village, Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, Freckleton C of E and Holy Family

Headteacher, Michelle Holden, said: “This means so much to our school. The donation is really going to enhance our provision, especially around some of our key priorities such as wellbeing, healthy eating and student resources. A massive thank you from Holy Family.”

The Holiday Village, that is open all year round, wanted to incorporate their Christmas marketing campaign into the end of year community and charity initiatives that include selection box donations to Christmas events, present donations to vulnerable children and supporting Lancashire food banks. n

EXPLORING NEW GROUND

As Ribble Cycles celebrates its 125-year anniversary with the launch of a new campaign, Emma Brereton talks to CEO Andy Smallwood

Ribble Cycles is a world-leading brand that is known for its innovation. From humble beginnings, over 125 years it has developed into a business that has embraced the digital era to become a trailblazer in the cycling world.

Wow, 125 years? How did it all start?

Ribble Cycles was founded by Richard Geldeard in 1897, opening his steel bike frame fabrication workshop and bike shop on Watery Lane in Preston. It sat right on

the banks of the River Ribble, which winds its way through the picturesque Ribble Valley inspiring the company name. The heart of the business has always stayed very close to its roots.

a product perspective but also in terms of business model. Over the decades it has moved with the changes to retail and stayed focused as a direct-to-consumer brand. We were early to introduce mail-order and then later embraced the opportunities that have evolved from the digital era.

In recent years, being at the forefront of digital retail has been the key driver of the business’ growth and success.

How important is being a British brand to Ribble?

It’s incredible to be one of the oldest bike brands in the world, how has Ribble Cycles achieved this?

Through the brand’s history it is clear that Ribble has always innovated, not just from

The Ribble Valley and Lancashire terrain has always been a strong influencing factor in our product design and development. The landscape provides some of the toughest testing conditions in the UK. We are very proud to be a British brand keeping our manufacturing process as British as possible with every bike built by hand in Preston.

WE HAVE JUST LAUNCHED OUR ‘125 YEARS OF EXPLORING NEW GROUND’ CAMPAIGN WHERE YOU WILL SEE LOTS OF ACTIVITY ACROSS THE NEXT 12 MONTHS CELEBRATING THIS SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE
Image courtesy of: Preston Digital Archive

If Ribble Cycles was going to feature on Tomorrow’s World, what would we see?

Hmmm, I need to be careful here to not give any secrets away. Put it this way, our ‘Q department’ are working on some really exciting projects.

What kind of person will the CEO be for the 250th anniversary?

They will need to share the passion for cycling and product innovation that every Ribble Cycles leader has shared over the past 125 years. It’s not just about product though, they will need to remain at the forefront of both digital and physical retail progression, driving the Ribble brand forward striving to give cyclists the best experience possible.

What advice would you give them?

Ribble’s success comes from the talent, creativity, experience, hard work and dedication of the team. Keep challenging the normal – just because that’s the way it’s done now, doesn’t make it the best way forward. Think beyond your surroundings.

How do you mix physical and digital and how do you see this developing?

Whilst we are a digitally native business, we understand that physical and real-time interaction is very important. To achieve

this, we have trialled and evolved various brand showroom formats culminating in our flagship showroom in Clitheroe.

THE FIRST OF OUR SPECTACULAR SPECIAL EDITION 125 BIKE MODELS RECENTLY LAUNCHED AT ROULEURLIVE IN LONDON AND WILL BE COMING SOON TO OUR FLAGSHIP SHOWROOM AT CLITHEROE

The showroom has been designed to give the customer the ability to be immersed in the Ribble brand, whilst physically experiencing our product range, customisation and personalisation. Customers are supported by an expert and surrounded by digital tech to create the same journey as they would via our website.

We have worked towards bridging the digital and physical worlds with the introduction of Ribble Live. It’s a one-way video link whereby the customer, in real-time, can access our Clitheroe showroom anywhere in the world to see our product range all with the support of an expert.

Our future development will be centred around giving our customers better and

more immersive experiences both digitally and physically – so watch this space!

What is the 125th year going to look like for Ribble?

We have just launched our ‘125 years of exploring new ground’ campaign where you will see lots of activity across the next 12 months celebrating this significant milestone. There will be special edition products, experiential events alongside brand activation and content that celebrates our heritage, legacy and most importantly, our exciting future.

And finally, where can we see the special edition bikes?

The first of our spectacular special edition 125 bike models recently launched at RouleurLive in London and will be coming soon to our flagship showroom at Clitheroe. n

SUPPORT

YOUR LOCAL SHOPS…

There are many reasons to shop local. From supporting your community artisans and farmers to reducing your carbon footprint, here are just a few ways to help your local high street thrive

For many years our local shops have slowly been in decline as a direct result of national supermarkets growing in size and the ever-increasing growing trend for people to shop online.

These factors have had a devastating effect on villages and smaller towns throughout the region – especially now in difficult times. The truth is, if everybody shopped locally both physically and online with local retailers, focusing less on the supermarket giants this would be a real boost to our local high streets, and their local suppliers too.

Now is most definitely the time to shop local and support our farmers, artisans, retailers and local businesses – help them survive through these testing times and thrive well into the future. Doing so could ultimately encourage new business back into towns and villages across Preston and Fylde. If we support our local economy by spending more money locally, then our communities will prosper.

There are many reasons why we should consider shopping locally:

• By shopping locally, you are pumping money back into the economy. With local retailers having the tendency to purchase from their community producers, this keeps farmers, makers and manufacturers in business – and in turn, keeps more people employed.

environment. Also, locally sourced produce equals fewer transport miles which drastically reduces the amount of CO2 emissions.

• Don’t forget that many of the same goods are available at your local shops, be it at the butchers, bakers or greengrocers. These products are of a similar price but far fresher and better quality than that of the major national supermarkets.

• Local people who run the shops know you and the community! A friendly face and a chat are what people need – for some it may be the only contact they have.

• When you shop local, you may have more choice as smaller shops often stock items that aren’t available at the supermarkets –many of these offer you originality and typically the products are locally made by artisans and can’t be found anywhere else.

• Keeping your local businesses up and running means that they can generate revenue to support services that make your community a better place to live.

• We’ve all heard of it – your carbon footprint. When shopping locally, people travel less distance and often walk or cycle to do their shopping, significantly reducing the amount of air pollution all of which benefits the

Due to challenging times, the rise in interest rates and the fuel crisis has meant that food banks have never seen such a high demand from families and the elderly. The community spirit is evident everywhere and never more so than among the smaller local shops in towns and villages across Preston and Fylde, who are always willing to help out.

Did you know that a recent governmentbacked study showed that for every £10 spent at the shops locally, nearly £4 is recirculated back into the local economy?

So, it really pays to shop local! n

FORTY YEARS & COUNTING

The Gibbon Bridge Hotel at Chipping remains at the forefront of the hospitality industry in terms of delicious food, luxurious accommodation and as a leading wedding venue

Atrailblazer in the Ribble Valley hospitality business, hotelier Janet Simpson and her loyal team are celebrating 40 years at the Gibbon Bridge Hotel.

From humble beginnings as a six-bedroom guesthouse in a converted farm building, the Gibbon Bridge has progressed to a luxurious hotel featuring 30 individuallydesigned bedrooms, beautifully manicured gardens, private al-fresco dining areas, an award-winning bandstand which is much sought-after for prestigious weddings,

a stunning orangery and a large neatlytended kitchen garden that supplies head chef Gary Buxton with fresh fruit and vegetables as well as decorative flowers for the hotel.

This is a four-decade success story that continues to break new ground with Janet’s loyal team driving the hotel forwards with weddings booked well into next year, regular guests enjoying the fantastic food and a series of seasonal events that are booked up way in advance.

where Janet and her mother used to bake cakes and sell them on Blackburn market. As the business took off, they decided to set up their own commercial kitchen in an outbuilding at the Gibbon Bridge and it was then that Janet’s vision of setting up a small guest house started to take shape.

With the backing of the English Tourist Board and encouragement from her mum Maggie, Janet received planning permission and work began to convert the barn.

Her positive attitude and her determination paid off – the vision became a reality and TV chat show host Russell Harty opened the Gibbon Bridge on 28th November 1982.

Janet has always been surrounded by a hard-working team who have supported her throughout the last 40 years, and as word spread about the first-class food, the Gibbon Bridge’s trailblazing reputation soared.

where the original ethos remains – ‘forever the richer’ a motto that relates to the guests and the people that have stayed there.

“There’s a lot of history behind the Gibbon Bridge,” says General Manager Edward Walmsley.

“It is an amazing achievement for any independent business to enjoy success spanning 40 years and no mean feat in the hospitality industry.

Four years later a further nine bedrooms were added and following that, a number of luxurious suites.

The core team at the Gibbon Bridge, working alongside Janet, have always endeavoured to enhance the guest experience – making their stay memorable. And, in return Janet has by her own acknowledgment made many friends over the years that continue to make her life ‘ever the richer’.

She has hosted classic car events at the hotel meeting and hosting other enthusiasts from all over the world – many of whom have also become firm friends.

Working alongside Janet, her team are taking the Gibbon Bridge forward, creating opportunities for guests who appreciate the world class service and unrivalled food.

“The Gibbon Bridge under Janet’s leadership has thrived. Nothing has changed in that respect – 2022 has been a fantastic year and we are now looking ahead to a busy 2023!”

A classic car enthusiast, Janet is a skilled chef and it was her love of cooking as a young woman that led her to set up the Gibbon Bridge.

Her family originally had the tenancy for the original 40-acre Gibbon Bridge farm, which they later went on to buy along with a barn and a piece of land.

At the time the family had bought a shop on Whalley New Road in Blackburn

Janet’s relentless determination and ambition made the Gibbon Bridge the place to eat and stay in the Ribble Valley –and it remains to this day one of the most popular venues located in the heart of the beautiful Forest of Bowland.

Behind the scenes, Janet’s favourite place to be has always been in the kitchen creating delicious dishes with local provenance. Today, she has taken a step back and while her influence can still be seen on the menu, head chef Gary, who has been part of the team for 25 years, follows in her footsteps creating fabulous food immaculately presented.

Time never stands still at the hotel and today the Gibbon Bridge remains a place

As 2022 draws to a close the team is looking ahead to another exciting year at the hotel, with many forthcoming events over the Christmas period and a calendar that will see musical afternoon teas, workshops and glamorous weddings throughout next year.

Well-wishers from all over the globe have sent their congratulations to Janet and the team congratulating them on their 40 years of success – and long may it continue! n

DIVORCE AND CO-PARENTING OVER CHRISTMAS AND BEYOND

The Christmas break can be a challenging time for divorced or separating parents but many of these challenges can be managed by following these useful tips when considering arrangements for your children over the festive period, explains Emma Procter, solicitor at Farleys

your plans should have the wishes of your children at the heart of them.

As a family law solicitor, I often find that my colleagues and I become extraordinarily busy at this time of the year when we are frequently approached by clients looking to resolve disputes over one or the other’s plans for the holidays. While this may come in the form of applications to the court, more often than not, these disputes can be solved without the need to deal with delays in the family courts.

Christmas is for children – While we can all get into the festive spirit and enjoy the occasion, the magic of Christmas is most important for the children. Regardless of your feelings for each other as ex-partners,

Children are not just for Christmas –Or, what I’m trying to say, is that the Christmas holidays are more than just one day. Whether it’s the excitement of Christmas Eve, leaving the mince pies out for Santa, or enjoying the leftover turkey and board games on Boxing Day, there are plenty of days for you to arrange for each parent and their families to spend time with the children.

Be organised, communicate and alternate – The sooner you open discussions about Christmas plans, the more time you have to make arrangements which suit everyone instead of rushing into a plan which leaves one person disappointed or bitter. Be willing to compromise where possible and explore the option of alternating arrangements the following year.

Christmas can be such an emotive time for separated families, but it does not have to be. Be kind and considerate, realistic, put aside differences for one day and allow your children to experience the magic of Christmas with each parent.

If you’re still struggling to come to arrangements for Christmas or any other time of year and are looking for support or advice, whether through mediation or an application to the family courts, our experts at Farleys are on hand to help. n

Contrary to popular belief, there is still some late availability for weddings. So, if you are hoping to get married soon, here are some tips on how you can plan a wedding in just a few months!

Your wedding venue is usually the deal breaker as it will dictate the date of the big day. In Preston and Fylde there is still late availability so shop around to find that perfect place to say, ‘I do’.

Once you’ve found your venue, book the registrar or church service.

Over the coming weeks choose your photographer, florist and cake-maker. Reserve suits, if you are hiring and start shopping for the wedding dress.

day duties, check speeches and organise a run through or rehearsal with close family and friends.

And on the day, enjoy, knowing that everything has been taken care of!

Once your big day is over, you can then look forward to your honeymoon. If you are choosing a holiday abroad, think about what the weather will be like when you go. If your wedding is in the winter months and you are looking for winter sun, you may need to go long haul, which will add to the cost. For some countries it may also be the rainy season.

Some companies organise honeymoon packages, where you can get added bonuses to make your holiday extra special.

Whatever you choose your wedding and honeymoon will be one to remember. n

If you’re planning a big wedding send out invitations as soon as possible and ensure you make appointments for your hair and makeup. If you want a DJ and/or a band for the evening reception, book it now!

With a few weeks to go, you should have had your final dress fitting and double checked your arrangements.

Also start to confirm numbers with your venue, advise on any changes to your menu and think about a seating plan and buying presents for bridesmaids and the best man.

With one week to go, delegate wedding

THERE’S NO PREP LIKE WESTHOLME!

The opening of the much anticipated and innovative new Prep building at Westholme School is part of an aspirational vision to deliver an all-through educational provision for students aged four to 18, writes Meena McDonald

The new Prep provision at Westholme enables children from their very early years in Prep Reception to experience the care, attention and family atmosphere for which the school is renowned. From the moment they arrive at Westholme aged four, they encounter the six pillars which form the school’s balanced curriculum, alongside the vast range of extra curricular activities on offer to every student.

Westholme Principal, Dr Richard Robson, explains: “The six pillars underpin the educational structure of the school

with each cluster attributed equal status. The areas are:

• Sports

• Creative Arts and Technology

• Performing Arts

• Maths and Science

• World Languages

• Humanities and Social Sciences

“They form the core foundation of our teaching through the Prep, Seniors and INSPIRED Sixth Form and deliver the academic rigour parents expect of Westholme. Our recent exam results are testament to this, with a remarkable 81 per cent achieving grade 7s (As) and

above at GCSE and 67 per cent gaining grade As and A*s at A Level.

“What makes our educational approach so distinctive is the journey they are taken on, developing the essential 21st century skills first and it is done with such ease that most students take their studies in their stride.

“The culture of teaching to the top, developing a strong work ethic and teaching students to take the initiative from Prep age, are just a few of the many aspects which makes Westholme so unique.”

Every child in Prep also has access to all the astounding facilities the school offers including the swimming pool, tennis courts, state-of-the-art theatre, a recording studio, advanced science laboratories and the forest school to name but a few.

WE WHOLEHEARTEDLY EMPOWER OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO SUCCEED BY PROVIDING THEM WITH WESTHOLME’S UNIQUE ALL-THROUGH EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY FROM THE MOMENT THEY JOIN US

Most importantly the younger children also have access to and interact regularly with all the ambitious students throughout the school including the INSPIRED Sixth Form students who act as role models, enthusing and motivating them to achieve their goals whilst having fun within this first class education setting.

Alongside the six pillars, Westholme also provides every pupil with the opportunity to develop character and key skills to thrive and grow through an epic range of extra-curricular activities.

These include everything from photography, Scrabble, table tennis, drama, French club to martial arts, ballet, junior journalists, cookery and verse speaking. There is truly something for everyone and every student is encouraged to try new ventures and build lifelong friendships.

leadership and problem-solving from a very young age. All of these skills support every aspect of life, and pupils’ future careers which is very different from what a local primary school would be able to offer.

Dr Robson continues: “We wholeheartedly empower our young people to succeed by providing them with Westholme’s unique all-through educational philosophy from the moment they join us, starting with the youngest children in our dynamic and stimulating Reception class.”

The whole ethos of Westholme is warm and nurturing to provide a happy and fulfilling environment where children love coming to school and develop strong bonds with their teachers and friends. The family feel is tangible from the moment they enter the beautiful, rural Wilmar Lodge setting.

The journey students undertake whilst at Westholme Prep is an unrivalled holistic experience unique to the school, inculcating lifelong skills such as confidence, communication, independence, teamwork,

Dr Robson continues: “The combination of the six pillars throughout the school, the extensive extra-curricular activities and the family atmosphere means every student that attends Westholme Prep will develop all the core values, traditional manners and entrepreneurial skills. At Westholme Prep, we lay the foundations for their whole lives.”

To have children as young as four, five

and six exposed to the incredible new purpose-built Prep facilities utilising the most up-to-date technology and learning environment, is such an amazing opportunity. Each child will receive the same distinctive educational philosophy that enables Westholme to continue to be placed as the highest achieving school in Lancashire and this is something very different in the heart of the Ribble Valley. It is the perfect start to any child’s education from aged four to 18.

James Dunne is the third generation of the Dunne family at the helm of successful Blackburn company Prestige Beds, writes Gail Bailey Photography: Kirsten Platt

Prestige Beds was founded in 1959 by James Dunne’s grandfather, after whom he was named:

“On leaving the RAF my grandad began working for a furniture company,” explains Operations Director James. “He wanted to begin his own business and noticed a gap in the market for a specialist bed company – and so Prestige Beds was born, the first of its kind in the country.”

The family-owned company has a proud heritage spanning more than six decades, and now has five stores including warehouses in Blackburn, Preston, Burnley and Hyndburn providing the North West with the same high level of service they have done for over half a century. This growth has meant an increase in staff and the company now employs 27 people across all their stores in sales as well as warehousing, deliveries and most recently their in-house marketing team.

Today Prestige Beds work with some of the business’s top suppliers, such as Hypnos, Harrison Spinks, Tempur, Vispring, Sealy, Sleepeezee and Relyon and stocks a comprehensive range of over 1,000 beds and mattresses across their stores.

and always offering a first-rate service,” James says.

James was Blackburn born and bred and educated locally at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, spending summer holidays working in the business as a ‘drivers’ mate’ helping with deliveries: “I went to Manchester University briefly, but my heart was in the family business, so I returned, and my grandad encouraged me to be involved in the company and become a part of it,” explains James.

After spending four years working as a driver James moved into sales and marketing before he progressed to his current role as Operations Director four years ago: “It has been a huge benefit to have worked ‘hands-on’ in the company from grass roots up and gain experience in all aspects of the business,” he says.

Prestige Beds still has the same ethos at its’ core that has enabled it to grow over the years into the success it is today: “My grandad ensured the business was customer centric. Our reputation is based on our unwavering focus on our customers

“My grandad introduced a free delivery service, which still stands today along with our team assembling beds in the room of choice and taking the old one away which is re-cycled. Consistency is absolutely key and maintaining high standards threads through the whole team – we have a very low turnover of staff and most of the team have been with us a number of years.”

James is obviously kept busy but outside of work has a huge passion for football and is a big fan of his beloved local club Blackburn Rovers: “We are proud to be in Blackburn and have been a long-standing corporate sponsor of the team and this season are happy to be commercial partners,” he says.

Prestige Beds are successful because they don’t stand still and James is always looking to the future: “We are launching our new website, which we’ve been working on for the last 18 months and further expansion is always at the forefront of our minds. We know there is a demand for high quality bed specialists in other towns and hope to further expand.”

In March this year Prestige Beds opened a store on Hyndburn Retail Park: “This was

initially a temporary outlet for us, and our first venture on a retail park. However, it has been so successful that we are now keeping the shop there!” James says.

Very much a family affair, James’ father Joe is Managing Director in the business and his younger brother now works in the sales department too.

The exceptional service from James and his team is evident with a recent review stating: “I cannot recommend this company highly enough. Very friendly and amenable with great product knowledge, great service, great staff – an all-round brilliant company.” n

FOIL RECYCLING

A new programme promoting aluminium recycling has been rolled out by Preston City Council. Residents are being encouraged to rinse and recycle their clean foil trays and wrapping foil, empty aerosols, drink cans and tins. ‘Clean Me’, a campaign run by the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro), will see creative advertisements placed on billboards, buses and bus shelters across the city. It will run for six weeks and aims to increase the amount of metal packaging that is recycled by households across the city.

GREEN LIGHT FOR ANIMATE

Animate, a multi-million pound leisure and entertainment complex at the heart of Preston’s city centre, has been given the green light by Preston City Council to move to the next key stage of development. Located within the Harris Quarter, this transformational scheme includes an eight-screen cinema, a bowling alley, various food and beverage units and new city parking, with improvements to the surrounding areas, including new landscaping, trees and street lighting.

WORLD MENOPAUSE DAY

Preston City Council supported World Menopause Day by signing a Menopause Workplace Pledge in support of its female staff members. In order to support a partner, family member, friend or team member through the symptoms, the council is adopting the pledge to raise more awareness across the whole workforce. Various surveys have shown that three out of five working women between the ages of 45 and 55, who are experiencing menopause symptoms say it has a negative impact on them at work and one in four women even considered leaving their jobs because of the impact of their symptoms in the workplace. Menopause support groups have found that many women are reluctant to talk about their menopause experience with their line manager or team members or to ask for support.

ROYAL MINT VISIT

The Royal Mint visited New Longton Post Office in Preston to mark the release of five million coins marking the 50th Anniversary of Pride UK entering circulation via 2,000 UK Post Offices. The Pride 50p is set to become the last design which will enter general circulation in the UK featuring the portrait of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse (heads) side of the coin. The commemorative design was created by LGBTQ+ activist Dominique Holmes for the 2022 anniversary, featuring the iconic rainbow and Pride in London values of Unity, Visibility, Equality and Protest on the reverse. New Longton Post Office, which is run by postmasters Daniel Cooper and Nathan Jones, is among the first of the 2,000 branches to distribute the coins. The couple are delighted to help issue the coins.

Bowker Motor Group has appointed David Ward as the first brand specialist for INEOS Grenadier in Lancashire. Bowker

Ribble Valley will be the sole Lancashire partner for the new INEOS Grenadier 4X4. The agreement will see Bowker operate in partnership with INEOS from the automotive retailer’s existing Bowker Ribble Valley dealership on the A59 in Osbaldeston near Blackburn. Dave, who is from Preston, brings almost 25 years’ experience to the role: “It’s exciting for me to be representing a new brand here in Lancashire. A key part of the INEOS Grenadier’s design is that it’s a canvas on which to build. So, my job will be to advise customers on configurations and different models, colour and different options available. We’re already taking advanced orders for the INEOS Grenadier and hosting events for Lancashire motorists to experience the 4x4 off roader for themselves.”

The Bowker partnership with INEOS Automotive will be overseen by managing director Chris Eccles, supported by Dave Ward and the existing Bowker Ribble Valley team.

INHERITANCE TAX: PLANNING IS VITAL

HM Treasury have confirmed that Inheritance Tax (IHT) receipts are up 14 per cent year on year in 2021-2022 hitting a record high of £6.1 billion. This surge in IHT payments is attributable to varying factors but particularly the rise in asset values as well as the UK Governments move to freeze the Nil Rate Band (NRB) for IHT to £325,000 until 2026 at the earliest.

If the value of your estate is above the £325,000 threshold, then IHT may be applied at 40 per cent above that amount.

However, 6th April 2017 marked the first time that former Chancellor George Osborne’s 2015 ‘£1 million IHT free’ statement became fact. The Government introduced an additional allowance for deaths after 6th April 2017 known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) that can now increase your tax-free threshold by an extra £175,000.

Any assets passing to a spouse or civil partner (CP) when you die are free of IHT. Therefore, your NRB might be increased if you are widowed or are a surviving CP. A surviving spouse or CP’s estate can claim any unused NRB from the first to die’s estate. This can double the amount of NRB available up to £650,000 on second death.

and this definition includes stepchildren on death

• Had a family home, then downsized on or after 8th July 2015 (passing on assets of equivalent value to ‘direct descendants’ in their will),

RNRB is transferable between spouses/CPs in a similar way to the NRB. This can double the amount of RNRB available to £350,000. Adding these together, would give you a potential allowance of £1million before any IHT is payable.

RNRB is fully available to anyone who:

• Passes the family home to ‘direct descendants’ – broadly children/ grandchildren and/or their spouses,

When it’s time to plan the future Let’s plan it together

None of us know what will happen next. So it’s important to make plans. Whether you’re arranging a will, setting up a power of attorney or dealing with inheritance tax and wealth management plans, you need expert help – so let’s do it together.

together is better

• Has a net estate below £2m RNRB unfortunately adds a layer of complexity. The ability to pass up to £1 million of your estate IHT-free will be available in certain circumstances. But establishing the position could be very complicated and will depend on several factors including marital status, whether you have children, value of your family home, value of your total estate on death – and who ultimately inherits the family home.

If you want to maximise the benefits of the RNRB you should consider the terms of your Will and consider the need for lifetime estate planning to help minimise IHT exposure. n For more information please contact a member of the Napthens team

FINANCIAL SERVICES WITH THE PERSONAL TOUCH

Don’t put off your financial planning due to the fear of having to sit in front of a jargon-spouting, aloof adviser, who is looking to tie you in knots and take their fee, rather than adding any real value to your situation. Fox Lifestyle Financial Planning Limited offer honest, realistic and straight forward advice.

Taking the apprehension out of financial planning, Fox Lifestyle Financial Planning have guided a wealth of clients through to simple, yet secure, peace of mind. Forget sharp suits and briefcases busting at the seams with confusing paperwork, with a refreshing ‘real world’ attitude through and through, this North West-based independent financial planning organisation truly puts the ‘friendly and straight forward’ into financial planning.

With uncertain times all around us, ensuring your finances, family and future are secure is vital for all of us, so it’s great to know there’s someone on your side.

Based in Preston, founder Stephen Fox enjoyed a successful career in all corners of the finance industry from trainee stockbroker to time-served financial planner within both small partnerships and established financial institutions.

Joining the industry around the time of the financial services’ crash in 2008 gave

him a singularly fresh insight, unhindered by habit or tradition: “Over my 15 years working within financial services, starting as a young naive entry-level employee making the coffees, right the way through

to a highly qualified Lifetime Financial Planner and Managing Director, I am responsible for all facets of running not only a financial planning practice, but also a properly managed business, calling on my many years’ experience in a Business Support and Project Management role with BAE Systems,” explains Stephen.

“On my journey, particularly early on,

THE BUSINESS IS BUILT ON STRONG PRINCIPLES, INTEGRITY, TRUST AND ABOVE ALL DOING WHAT IS RIGHT

working in quite an ‘Americanised’ salestype organisation as a young man, I was shown clearly how not to run an ethical financial services business. These years were absolutely vital as they afforded me the knowledge needed, and the route map required, to move on and develop and nurture our business into what it is today.

“The business is built on strong principles, integrity, trust and above all doing what is right. We apply our ethos not only within the business but further afield in unrelated areas such as supporting grassroots football and offering support to local schools, who sadly still don’t seem to have basic financial planning on the syllabus. Our beliefs and approach are not something we leave at the office – it is a way of life for all who work within our business.”

Of course, Stephen has a reassuring list of financial qualifications, but that’s

not what delights his customers. It’s the empathy, understanding and life experience he has brought to building his varied team and reputation.

You won’t find any confusing jargon, no impersonal presentations, just relaxed, down-to-earth conversations with normal human beings, with all members of the group excelling in friendly, down-to-earth advice based on the life picture they build, through getting to know each client as an individual. What you will find is reassuringly sensible advice and guidance – no flannel, no steering, no pressure.

Fox Lifestyle Financial Planning are an appointed representative of Flying Colours Advice Limited headed by one of the most respected investment dynamos in the industry, Guy Myles, who was one of the founder members of Octopus Investments. Guy’s reputation for waging war on ‘hidden costs’ in the investment world in favour of simple, direct client-focussed performance, perfectly matches what Stephen and the team set out to achieve from the start.

The team of specialists at Flying Colours Investment Management Limited, part of the Flying Colours group of companies, provide investment expertise and support to Fox Lifestyle Financial Planning Limited, allowing them to focus on delivering high quality, tailored financial planning advice for their clients.

Whilst very much at home in Preston with wife Joanna, whom Stephen met approaching 20 years ago, and two boys William and Seb, following the pandemic all boundaries have been removed, allowing client relationships throughout the UK, which of course is part of the new world, calling upon the virtual options, which some clients prefer.

Indeed, Fox Lifestyle Financial Planning continues to build a reputation for going above and beyond, including home-based appointments and out-of-hours availability, a friendly voice and face on the screen, in the office or on the sofa.

Whatever your situation, concerns, requirements or ambitions, the team will understand and advise on:

• Investments

• Pensions

• Inheritance tax planning

• Later life and long-term care

• General protection including life cover and critical illness.

“It’s all about life, and we only get one,”

adds Stephen. “Life is rarely a straight forward event – it is complex and can be quite messy financially as our situations and priorities change over time. Most of our clients find us, because they want to lay out a simple, yet secure path for them to follow, but can’t see the way themselves either because they don’t have the time or it’s simply an area they don’t feel confident in.

LIFE IS RARELY A STRAIGHT FORWARD EVENT –IT IS COMPLEX AND CAN BE QUITE MESSY FINANCIALLY AS OUR SITUATIONS AND PRIORITIES CHANGE OVER TIME

“Our initial ‘discovery session’ is very relaxed (no clock ticking or charge sheet) and all about our client – their journey to date, where they are now, their commitments, concerns and what must happen for them in the future. We then break off and come back armed with the benefit of our experience, sharing our ideas and recommendations, based on many years of finding the right solutions for our clients. The end result is a plan tailored specifically for them, their family and their future, incorporating savings, pensions and investments, which then evolves with the client over the years ahead.”

Financial planning isn’t necessarily just for those with ‘money to spare’, it’s common sense and security for everyone and with prices rising and belts tightening, it’s more important than ever to have your money working hard for you and your future.

With a Fox Lifestyle Financial Planning expert on your side, that’s exactly what you’ll get. n

The group’s Service Manager is Stewart Rose, who has worked for Bowker for close on 40 years. A man well worth listening to.

“Times are tough and we appreciate the squeeze many car owners are feeling, so we’ve looked carefully at ways we can help.

“The outcome is a whole suite of options to enable customers to not only care for their cars in the here and now but, even more importantly, to protect their investment going forward.

I

t always pays to look after your assets, the things in life that really matter. Your health, your family, your house. There is no price on protection and the same, of course, applies to your car.

But when times get tough and personal finances take a hit, it is tempting to cut corners and seek out what can, on the surface at least, appear to be cheaper options.

A word of caution here – don’t take risks and try to see the bigger picture.

Better still, tap into the help and support available at Lancashire motor group Bowker BMW and MINI.

Bowker recognise that some car owners –driven by economic restraint – might choose to look outside the main retailers for service, maintenance and repair requirements.

And they can pinpoint plenty of reasons

“Not just gimmicks to catch the eye, but properly thought-out plans, covering all angles and eventualities and tapping into our long association with BMW.”

With 45 manufacturer-qualified technicians* across the main sites in Preston and Blackburn, Bowker has the skill set, the technology and the kit –not to mention the support of a major global car manufacturer – to provide an unparalleled service.

Now there’s a key word. Service. Ah, I hear you saying … that sounds expensive.

Let Stewart explain why it pays to think Bowker.

“Many of our options on servicing and repair work are totally bespoke, tailored to individual circumstances and we already note that presenting people with that sort of flexibility is very popular.

“For example, we offer 0% APR finance

MANY OF OUR OPTIONS ON SERVICING AND REPAIR WORK ARE TOTALLY BESPOKE, TAILORED TO INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES

with repayments spread up to 12 months on service, accessories and repairs.

“There is personalised service pricing for cars over three years old, with a bespoke discount of at least 20% on any parts (genuine BMW & MINI parts which come with a two-year warranty) required as part of a service.

“Customers can choose a pay-monthlyservice-plan from just £15 per month, again adapted to suit both owner and vehicle. It is possible to select the length of time and level of cover a plan includes, depending on the age and mileage of the vehicle.

“It is fixed for its duration, so customers are protected against any inflation or future price increases and the plan and any unused balance, can be transferred if you were to purchase a new BMW or MINI.

count on our service advisors to come up with the best possible deal. We also offer an MOT for just £39.99.”

Using a main retailer like Bowker offers plenty of peace of mind too. You know you are getting expert attention from BMW factory-trained ATA qualified technicians.

Sounds impressive, it is impressive –and very important too.

There is so much more to servicing cars these days than simply opening up the bonnet, checking fluid levels, testing brake pads and kicking a couple of tyres. For example, cars are crammed with technology, gadgets and software, which need updating and a level of expertise only available at main retailers.

Stewart continues: “If I had left Bowker to set up on my own, say three years ago, I would already be miles behind on knowledge. That’s a fact.

“We invest time and money in technicians who spend at least two weeks every year away on courses, upgrading their skills. That commitment keeps us bang up to date, which is critical.

“Letting us care for your BMW or MINI is an investment. It will be worth more when it comes to upgrading, part-exchanging or selling on, as the right work will have been done at the right time, to the manufacturer’s satisfaction.”

So now you know. Your car is an asset and it needs looking after properly.

If you think that’s expensive then the advice is simple …. think again. n

* Among the Bowker specialist team is Phil Darwen, who has risen to the lofty level of Master Technician, one of just six such car superstars in the UK

“Suitable for any age of vehicle, it also includes one free MOT, a wash and vac every visit, seasonal health checks, seasonal Sat Nav map updates and free fluid top ups.

“Our ‘price promise’ means we won’t be beaten on price or quality for any service or repair quote on a like-for-like basis from any BMW or MINI independent workshop in the area.

“As for tyres, we check our prices against all popular tyre retailers (Kwik-Fit and Blackcircles.com) and customers can

PETER PAN OF TENNIS

Michael Hodkinson meets Kevin Eastham, a veteran of the tennis world, who has played against Stanley Matthews

Junior

Anyone following the world of professional tennis will know that the game’s old guard, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, plus Serena Williams on the female side, are being slowly replaced. Increasingly, the new brigade is being spearheaded by youngsters. Only last summer, an 18-year-old Emma Raducanu shocked everyone by winning the US Open. Less surprising was Carlos Alcaraz’s men’s singles victory at the same Flushing Meadows’ venue this summer. But at 19 years of age, it was further proof that youth will out.

Kevin Eastham was born in 1937, brought up in Cleveleys, a scholar at Fleetwood Grammar School, a student of Architecture and Town Planning at Manchester University and for the last 50 plus years, a Lytham resident. He has been a member of tennis clubs in Thornton, Lytham and now St Annes, plus a spell at Bramhall Park on the Cheshire side of Manchester.

There, in 1960, he entered the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships at Didsbury –then an amateur pre-Wimbledon tournament. He found himself in the same half of the draw as Rod Laver, the left-handed Aussie still considered one of the greatest ever male players.

Unfortunately Kevin was eliminated before he could be matched with the ‘Rockhampton Rocket’.

He also played against Stanley Matthews Junior, son of the iconic footballer. Stan junior, still the last Briton to win Junior Wimbledon in 1958, was in his early teens when he clashed with Kevin in a men’s doubles tournament at Jubilee Park in Cleveleys. Press coverage ensured that a sizeable crowd turned up to witness the match and as young Stanley was parked at the net by his experienced partner and coach, Kevin and his partner hatched a plan to use force to ‘shift him’.

Isles, from Glasgow to Haverfordwest, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Bournemouth,” recalls Kevin.

“One year in a veterans’ tournament, the matches were played on one of Wimbledon’s outside courts. The game has changed so much since I started playing in the late 40s, particularly with regards to the equipment. The racquets for both lawn tennis and squash are now far bigger.”

EMMA RADUCANU SHOCKED EVERYONE BY WINNING THE US OPEN. LESS SURPRISING WAS CARLOS ALCARAZ’S MEN’S SINGLES VICTORY

“It was a perfectly legal tactic,” Kevin explains. “I was hitting the ball so hard at the young Matthews that he fell over. The crowd booed and the great Stan Senior, filming the match on an early cine camera, was none too pleased.

“The following year, the father, himself a very competent tennis player, entered the same competition partnering his son. We were drawn to play them, but because the press turned up in force, the Matthews’ scratched because dad did not want his son to be the focus of so much media attention at such a young age.”

40S,

But back in Lancashire, the Fylde coast is home to an 85-year-old who has recently been forced to give up playing competitive tennis in national competitions because there are too few around in his age group to compete against.

It is in seniors’ competitions where Kevin has become so well known amongst the tennis fraternity. The age groups change every five years and between the ages of 45 and 80, he has regularly represented Lancashire in the National Championships, once winning the Inter-County Team Competition in 2017. In over 30 years, playing in the annual Lancashire Veterans’ Singles and Doubles Championships, he has won 21 county titles, being regularly partnered in the doubles by Cliff Warburton, a Fleetwood pharmacist.

“I have competed all over the British

All this of course has been a hobby –one which he shared for many years with his wife Valerie.

“We won a few mixed doubles titles together. In fact it was at the Thornton tennis club where I first got to know her. Sadly, she died three years ago, but we had been married for close to 60 years.”

For his day job, Kevin was Assistant County Planning Officer for Lancashire, based in Preston. He was responsible for the pedestrianisation of the popular Clifton Square in Lytham and on retirement, he was persuaded to represent the Fairhaven ward as an Independent on Fylde Borough Council. His 16-year stay there concluded with his election as Mayor for the 2015-16 period and he has also chaired the Royal Institute of British Architects, North West Region.

Kevin concludes: “Those days are behind me, but I still play tennis, just not at county level any more.” n

STREET FOOD SENSATION

Since opening the first Mowgli restaurant in 2014, founder Nisha Katona has dedicated herself to growing the popular Indian street food chain to almost 20 locations around the UK, writes Emma Brereton

While conducting research for this article and reading about Nisha Katona’s list of achievements, I was excited to speak with her as there is no doubt she is an impressive woman, with a business that has achieved a place in The Times Fast Track 100 list within its first five years of opening. She has also been recognised with an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours list for services to the food industry and is also Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University. Wherever Nisha goes, success follows.

Her entrepreneurial spirit is infectious. Yet before she started her own business, Nisha was a domestic abuse barrister for two decades, making a difference to people’s lives when they were at their most vulnerable.

Nisha was first introduced to the possibility of a career in law while doing work experience for a delivery firm, taking parcels to a barristers’ chambers.

More recently, Nisha has launched Mowgli in Preston – the Indian street food favourite, which prides itself on serving the kind of food Indians eat at home, cooks everything fresh on a daily basis.

“I wanted to open up a restaurant here because I grew up close by and Preston was where I spent a lot of time. I even went to my first ever gig at the Guild Hall –there are lots of happy memories here,” explains Nisha.

Sticking to her northern roots, Nisha and her family live on The Wirral: “Liverpool is a wonderful city. It’s where I first thought of the concept of Mowgli and where we opened the first restaurant.

She set her sights on a university place at Liverpool John Moores University to read law and was then accepted to join the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in London.

Fast forward to today and Nisha is most recognised as the founder of Mowgli as well as cooking slots on This Morning and as a judge on The Great British Menu and Celebrity MasterChef.

“While I was a barrister, I used to spend time after work teaching people how to cook Indian food, welcoming friends to see our delicious culture first hand. I would be kept awake at night with an obsession to build what Mowgli has grown into today and I knew if I didn’t at least try then I would never know if customers would enjoy the dishes I have loved for 50 years.”

It was this obsession that inspired Nisha to build her business and she did this alongside being a full-time barrister, a wife and mother. She would spend lunch times sitting in Liverpool city centre noting down what people ate for lunch and after work observing the chefs at a friend’s restaurant.

“I knew nothing about how to run a

I WANTED TO OPEN UP A RESTAURANT HERE BECAUSE I GREW UP CLOSE BY AND PRESTON WAS WHERE I SPENT A LOT OF TIME

restaurant,” says Nisha. “But I was ready to learn and I did everything I could to see how a commercial kitchen worked and how it could be adapted to create the dishes I dreamed of sharing.

“I remortgaged my life to launch my business – some of my approaches may be unconventional but it is built on love, integrity and grace.”

This outlook is the premise for the working culture at Mowgli. Nisha hand picks ‘curry virgins’ for her kitchens and trains each new Mowgli chef ensuring that every employee feels purposeful, nourished and fulfilled. Even during the pandemic Nisha’s positivity stayed strong, steadying a brigade of chefs who crave routine and a desire to work.

“I am proud to say we didn’t lose a single team member and even now we have 700 positions with only four openings. I treat my staff like family and I want them to feel safe and loved at Mowgli – this approach pays dividends.”

Nisha also invests in raising money for local charities and sending her employees to the Indian villages from where her recipes originate: “We have raised just over £1.1 million for regional charities. I have also sent 60 per cent of our team on trips to India to either learn to cook new dishes to keep our menu authentic or to take part in initiatives such as building and repairing elephant sanctuaries.”

The food at Mowgli is a love letter to Nisha’s Indian heritage and the concept is a million miles away from the curry stereotype we have come to expect from British Indian cuisine. The menu conveys the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan and always packed with fresh flavour.

“The menu is the same in every Mowgli restaurant you visit. I haven’t tired of these dishes in five decades and I am confident our customers won’t either.” n

Nisha is also a food writer for The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times and The Independent with several cookbooks published including The Mowgli Cook Book

Property expertise from a team you can

trust.

Putting your home on the market is a step towards making a life changing decision, so appointing an estate agent you can trust to guide you through the process is vital, writes Emma Brereton.

In a buoyant property market, any estate agent can put your house on Rightmove or Zoopla with a selection of images, sit back and wait for the phone to ring. But for Guildhall Sales and Lettings the team prides itself on going above and beyond for every buyer, seller and landlord that comes their way.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the sector, the agency is already well respected and is happy to unveil its slick new look following a recent buy out from Keenans Estate Agents.

The experience Chris brings fits perfectly with Guildhall Sales and Lettings who, along with their lettings department, have more than 30 years’ property experience combined. Chris believes that it’s their down to earth and friendly approach that will establish them as the best choice for sales as well as lettings in the area.

He added: “Our lettings manager Lauren has worked here since 2005 and knows all of our landlords by name. She has seen and helped the business through every curve ball the property market has endured over the last 17 years and that is down to the excellent service she provides. We believe that when you choose to market your property with us, whether it’s for sales or lettings, you’re in the safest of hands.”

The agency is already showing community support by sponsoring this year’s Preston Light Switch on as well as through another sponsorship opportunity for an extra special Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition in partnership with Preston BID to raise money for The Foxton Centre.

The competition will see Christmas cards delivered to a selection of schools from the PR1, PR2 and PR3 postcodes, with the winners announced on the main stage at this year’s Preston Christmas Light Switch On, which takes place on Saturday 19th November at Preston’s Flag Market.

Prizes up for grabs include a framed award certificate and a picture of the winning card, 25 cards and envelopes for family and friends and local shopping vouchers. The winning design will be available for purchase at The Harris Library and at the Preston North End shop, with a percentage of the proceeds going to The Foxton Centre.

Chris added: “We are delighted to be sponsoring these two community initiatives and we are very much looking forward to getting to know those who want to sell their homes as well as people looking to move to Ashton on Ribble and the surrounding areas.”

input from the planning officer prior to the main planning application. However, this is an optional service the planning department provides, therefore as they need to prioritise their main applications, pre-applications are having to take a back seat. This has meant that we have been waiting for six months in some instances, for a pre-application response.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

As we reach the end of 2022 ZMA look back on the year, their achievements and their plans for 2023

At ZMA, 2022 marked our fifth year in business and we gained three new members of the team.

The total projects we have worked on to date is now 160 and within 15 different local authorities. Over the last 12 months we have had 19 successful planning approvals, 16 of which were on sensitive sites including greenbelt, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and open countryside.

We have continued our mission to ‘Transform Sites, Buildings and Lives’ by adding value for our clients. From creating dream homes for individual families, to maximising the development potential of sites to sell with planning permission. In all of our projects we push the boundaries of design to create proposals which are unique and add significant value.

Over the last year we have obtained approval for some very exciting schemes which include a luxury eco-home in Ribble Valley open countryside, a super home in the Chorley greenbelt, a hillside eco-home with annexe in Pendle open countryside, the transformation and extension of a

Non-Designated Heritage Asset in Bury greenbelt and a large contemporary house extension in Brockhall Village.

This year has been the year of increasing energy and material costs, and the update of Building Regulations to achieve lower U-Values (improved energy efficiency through the fabric of the building). There is light at the end of the tunnel however, as material costs are predicted to reduce within the next six months and with the cost of energy rising – it now means that clients are futureproofing their schemes to ensure they create a low energy home, with eco-home requirements now being the norm. The changes to the Building Regulations will also respond to the energy crisis by increasing the required standard of insulation and triple glazing will become the standard.

In planning news, our experience over the last 12 months is that all local authorities are still experiencing a workload backlog, which has resulted in severe delays for pre-application submissions. Pre-applications, are a key part of the planning process particularly for sensitive sites, to obtain

Some local authorities such as Pendle have terminated this service until further notice, therefore we have been proceeding straight to the formal application with an open dialogue during the application period, or in the case of other local authorities – a conversation/Zoom meeting to understand the planning officer’s views is achievable without needing to wait for a formal response. Our advice would be to plan your project accordingly by appointing your architect at least 12 months prior to requiring approval for a sensitive site and six months for a non-sensitive site.

Our sensitive planning approvals from 2021 are now becoming a reality as they are nearing completion on-site, so watch this space for some big reveals in 2023!

If one of your 2023 goals is to start your project ‘dream home’ or obtain planning approval for a sensitive site, contact us to discuss your aspirations. n
