Hello and welcome to this September issue of Live Preston and Fylde magazine.

There have been many exciting events in our wonderful area this summer and I hope you got to enjoy them despite the often very wet weather! These annual events have included the Lytham Wartime Festival, the Garstang Show, Lytham Hall’s Last Night of The Proms and there are more things to look forward to this month… The MET returns to University Square, Preston with a host of exciting events, there will be a host of Heritage Open Days across the region, plus St Annes Kite Festival and Lancashire’s Game and Country Festival in Scorton, to name but a few! When you are out and about, you can always tag us in your photos on Twitter/X at @Live_PF.

This year is whizzing by and now we find ourselves turning our thoughts to cooler weather, a return to school, winter proofing our homes and planning weddings.

In this issue, we discover an amazing record shop that has survived everything that technology has thrown at it over the last 42 years. I’m sure many vinyl-loving readers will be familiar with the iconic Action Records in Preston and we find out more about owner Gordon Gibson’s incredible journey.

Elsewhere, we visit a new charity in Wrea Green which offers its vast acreage to supporting the local community in a variety of ways. We meet Hesketh Bank greengrocer Baz Dawson who provides customers with locally grown produce within three hours of cutting from the field. We learn about this year’s Encounter Festival and meet the Preston-born fashion designer set to fly high at London Fashion Week.

So as the nights draw in and the leaves start to fall, snuggle up with a hot drink and enjoy our latest issue!

JUST FOR THE RECORD

So much of the world has changed since the 1980s, but one Preston record shop has remained the same. This Mecca for the music fan is still the North West epicentre of discovering both new and used vinyl and CDs. Alma Stewart discovers the secret of owner Gordon Gibson’s prodigious success. Photography: Michael Porter

In an unassuming corner of Church Street, you’ll find the most magical place full to the brim of everything a music fan could wish for and since its opening in 1981, Action Records has been supplying the latest sounds and vintage gems for any serious or curious collector. What Gordon doesn’t know about music is not worth knowing.

Born in Stranraer in Scotland, Preston was never the destination he planned to stay. It was only by coincidence that he spent the next forty plus years in the city. Gordon explains: “I have been a huge music fan all my life and in the 1970s, there were so many exciting gigs and festivals to go to that I would hitch my way around the country.

“As Preston was at the end as one of the main routes down from Scotland, I would often get a lift there. I was hitching to the Lincoln Folk Festival in 1971 when a couple, Alan and Sheila from Tarleton, gave me a lift and I ended up spending and really

enjoying, the weekend with them and then hitched home again.

“The next thing I knew, I heard my name mentioned by Bob Harris on Radio One Sounds Of The 70s show – it was Alan and Sheila asking me to get in touch. Bob read out their phone number and everything!”

Among some of his early jobs were at Fifes banana warehouse in Deepdale and at Preston Docks but his passion for music led him into dealing in records in his spare time.

“I started my own stall in in Blackpool’s South Shore market in 1979, before moving to the town’s Bond Street, but still living in Preston, I saw the shop next door to the current one, which used to be Age Concern, and once owned by a Preston footballer. Because it had more space, I signed the lease.”

The timing of the opening of the shop could not have been better. Having sold mainly second-hand vinyl and cassettes, with post punk bands like Joy Division and New Order performing at the nearby Warehouse, just off Church Street, there were a number of 7”, 12”, LPs and cassettes to be sold, though Preston at that time, had a number of record shops around the town centre.

Gordon grew a great friendship with the couple and moved into a flat in Preston, then the perfect base for a flourishing music scene.

“I saw Bowie twice at the Guild Hall. It was an incredible time for live music. I’ve watched Queen, Mott the Hoople even Springsteen at his first UK concert. I still watch live music now.”

Gordon had some great support in the form of his great friend Allan Atkinson, who sadly died following a short illness late last year. Gordon said: “I was waiting at a bus stop one night on the way back from a Hawkwind gig in Blackburn in 1973 and got talking to the guy next to me. Allan and I struck up an immediate friendship that continued through the years. It was with Allan’s help and knowledge of music that I managed to set up Action Records

localfocus 13
IT WAS WITH ALLAN’S HELP AND KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC THAT I MANAGED TO SET UP ACTION RECORDS AND KEEP IT GOING ALL THESE YEARS

and keep it going all these years. His larger than life character was and will always be part of the shop. He will always be missed by us all.”

In the 1990s, the record companies made a fortune switching their back catalogue to the new CD format and stopped producing vinyl. New releases were on compact discs instead of the 7” vinyl singles. Everyone thought that vinyl was over – even supermarkets sold CDs. Luckily, Gordon got in early on the new internet trend by selling items by mail order, which still continues today and is a big part of his business.

guests have made an appearance in the shop including The Damned and Steven Wilson –top prog rock musician – and people came from all over Europe to meet them. “We have released records by bands such as The Boo Radleys, Dandelion Adventure, Big Red Bus, The Genocides, Tompaulin, Fi-Lo Radio, Monkey Steals, The Drum amongst others,” Gordon continued, “our biggest project so far has been with The Fall and Mark E Smith as a solo performer.”

And claims to fame don’t end there. In 2015, film production students from nearby Newman College made a short film documentary about the shop, ‘Chased by Nuns’, which premiered in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Why would I retire just to sit at home and do nothing? I’d rather be here chatting to the many different people that come to visit and play them some tunes particularly stuff they

RECORDS HAVE CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION OF TODAY’S YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A PHYSICAL THING YOU CAN HOLD

Dance music dominated the charts and the clubs. When Gordon saw the next door shop come up for rent, he signed up for the bigger space, leaving the smaller shop next door stocked only with dance music. Luckily, there was an original door that led from one shop to another and Gordon and a couple of friends moved all the rock and blues into the new shop over a weekend.

But despite the CDs and rise in streaming, Gordon still kept buying dealing in vinyl, particularly Indie records, and just went with the flow. There were even some releases on the Action Records label and many special

Now of course, streaming is the big thing but there has also been a massive resurgence in vinyl with huge artists like Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray releasing their music straight to record.

Gordon explained: “Records have captured the imagination of today’s young people with a physical thing you can hold. They are even made in all different colours and are being remastered and re-released so everything has come full circle. After the 50 plus aged customers, our next biggest customer group is aged between 14 and 18. But people’s music passions and ages just morph into one.”

So more than 40 years later and at the age of 70, Gordon has no plans to turn the door sign to ‘closed’ for good. He added: “I still work ridiculous hours, but this is my life.

may never had heard before. I’ve got to know a lot of people over the years and it’s great to chat and suggest they listen to something new or old, so if there is a secret to my business success, it’s following your passion and through that, delivering a fantastic customer service.”

And like all good legends, let’s hope Action Records lives on. n

A Show-Stopping Kitchen

A stunning new house in Poulton-le-Fylde needed a show-stopping kitchen and Suzanne Ryan from Kitchen Design Centre in Barrowford delivered, designing a spectacular kitchen that is perfect to cook in and has the ‘wow’ factor.

Simone and Tom built their incredible home from scratch which enabled them to have the house of their dreams

Kitchen Design Centre and Suzanne were recommended to Simone by a friend who had a kitchen from the company over ten years ago and still loves it. From the minute Simone met Suzanne she knew she could work well with her which was important as she wanted a designer she could collaborate well with. Suzanne translated Simone’s ideas perfectly and came up with a range of fantastic ideas and design solutions.

With a large space allocated for the kitchen, Suzanne initially worked from plans and looked at a design featuring two islands. It soon became clear that one long island would work better and listening to what the family wanted, she created not only a beautiful kitchen but a practical one too that works for both everyday living and entertaining.

The result is a stunning kitchen space that works perfectly in the home and suits everyone in the family. Practical, with everything Simone asked for, the space is ideal as a working kitchen but it also looks fantastic too.

To read more about how we designed this kitchen and to view the video tour of it visit: www.kitchendesigncentre.com

“What an incredible project this was to work on. The house is amazing and to have the opportunity to design the kitchen was fantastic. It’s always great to work from plans and essentially have a blank canvas and because this was built from scratch Simone ensured she had her dream kitchen.”

PRESTON’S MADE-TO-MEASURE BLINDS SPECIALISTS

Hannan Blinds is a Preston-based business, specialising not only in quality manufactured products, but also an unrivalled customer service that has seen the vibrant business continue to thrive and expand for more than 50 years, writes Claire Stephenson.

Photography: Roger Moore

Starting off as a business in 1972, Hannan Blinds was born on Plungington Road, with the same values and excellent service as they offer today from their showroom on Garstang Road in Fulwood. Transforming homes and spaces with beautiful blinds and shutters is their speciality, from traditional to contemporary designs and everything in between.

Customer Service is King

Ian Leather is the owner of Hannan Blinds, and has led the business for more than 25 years. Even in the recent testing times of the Covid 19 pandemic, Ian strategically used the opportunity of lockdown to ensure that Hannan’s staff were all fully trained in measuring and installing products. This has resulted in the team being multi-skilled and

able to carry out all aspects of work, from customer visits, measurements, product advice, fitting and showroom guidance.

Ian says: “We’re incredibly proud of our business, our dedicated team members, and especially, our loyal customers who we are privileged to serve. Our customer base is strong and multi-generational – we regularly get the children and even grandchildren of some of our original customers buying from us.”

Hannan Blinds’ showroom is in the heart of Fulwood’s community, making it a prominent location for passing trade.

Ian continues: “We’ve always manufactured our own products, which means we take care of our customers from the start of ideas and designs, right through to the final professional fitting of the blinds. Our customer service is second-to-none and the repeat customers we help is testament to that.”

Ian and his team also offer a free and no obligation choose-at-home sample service, where customers can save time by having a Hannan Blinds specialist visit them at home, to discover the perfect product and design for their needs, at a time to suit.

WE’RE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF OUR BUSINESS, OUR DEDICATED TEAM MEMBERS, AND ESPECIALLY, OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS WHO WE ARE PRIVILEGED TO SERVE

“The team are all committed to our customers’ experience and service,” says Ian. “Whether we’re providing products in a commercial setting or in someone’s home, everyone receives the same exceptional customer service we’ve become well known for.”

Hannan Blinds’ expertise, attention to detail, and dedication to customer satisfaction have earned them an enviable position as the go-to supplier for new housing developments, solidifying their place as a key player in the region’s thriving construction landscape.

Distinctive Designs

Hannan Blinds offer a complete collection of bespoke blinds and shutters to suit every room of the home, including a made-tomeasure conservatory blinds service and specially-backed performance fabrics. This unique fabric provides heat reflection to assist in keeping conservatories cool in summer, and maintaining warmth in the winter by trapping the heat inside.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, blinds and shutters also contribute to energy efficiency, helping to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce utility bills.

The collection showcases an eye-catching range of fabric designs, textures and colours to choose from, with Hannan Blinds supplying top-name brands such as Velux, ILIV, Shuttercraft®, Decora, Tropical Blinds & Shutters and Louvolite.

“We sell beautifully designed products that offer style along with practical solutions for both living and commercial spaces,” says Ian. The innovative styles of blinds and shutters also include the popular motorised blinds, which Hannan specialise in. The motorised design is perfect for families, with the remote control system being entirely chain-free and child-safe, ensuring convenience and safety at the same time.

Ian continues: “When people buy from us, they are guaranteed quality manufactured products with a five-year warranty, along with genuine, honest advice and friendly customer service.

“The first-class quality of our products and the outstanding service that we deliver to our customers is what makes us so confident in what we do every day and for the years to come.”

Stuart has been fantastic right from our first enquiry to finishing the work, he listened to what we wanted and advised on his previous experience. Every step of the process was explained to us. He had a brilliant trades team who were all highly skilled, polite and respectful.”

October 2022

“First time I have used Stuart and Creative and I would 100 per cent recommend. Competitively priced, honest, excellent communications and the fitting team (John) was fantastic! We replaced 11 large sash windows in our 1900s farmhouse. The Chartwell Green on white looks amazing, the windows look in keeping with the original wooden sash windows and neighbours have questioned whether they were actually UPVC!”

previous clients also routinely offer visits so you can get a feel for the quality, whilst also speaking to them about an honest review of our work!

“We don’t use high-pressure sales tactics –we meet with you, measure up, give our advice, provide a quote then it’s up to you. Most of our jobs come from recommendations so we must be doing something right!”

Don’t just take Stuart’s word for it though. Looking through the council-run Safe Trader website, there are countless, honest reviews for Stuart and his team highlighting their friendliness, workmanship, tidiness and general professionalism.

After building up such an excellent reputation over their first 20 years, here’s to the next 20! n

WINTER WARMERS

Autumn and winter months in the garden needn’t be dull. There are plants offering an array of vibrant foliage colours, berries and even flowers from September and beyond. Michael Cookson from Newgate nurseries takes you through some of his favourites

Perennials

Helleborous nigra – this evergreen shade loving Christmas rose produces waxy white flowers from October through to spring.

Heuchera Berry smoothie – another evergreen perennial, this produces a low rounded hummock of rich pink foliage which turns to silver in winter and back to pink in the spring.

Hesperantha coccinea – rich pink star like flowers are held above rich green sword like foliage throughout October-December. The last perennial to flower in the garden

Shrubs

Mahonia soft caress – the best of both worlds, this dwarf evergreen shrub boasts soft dissect foliage with rich yellow flowers in late autumn.

Skimmia japonica rubella – this dwarf evergreen is a male clone meaning that it produces bright red flower buds which look like berries opening to white scented flowers in the spring. Shade loving and low growing.

Viburnum tinus eve price – quite a popular evergreen shrub which produces masses of pink/white flowers through autumn and

winter. The flowers persist into the spring and are followed by blue summer fruits.

Trees

Sorbus Autumn spire – this new rowan tree lights up bonfire night and beyond as it clings to its beautifully coloured foliage later than most trees. White flowers and yellow berries provide food for bees and birds. n

from Spain, grown to withstand our northern climate, and quite simply a stunning focal point for any garden!

It is just one of thousands of carefully curated specimens at this amazing destination that is tucked away on the edge of the Ribble Valley.

LOVE YOUR HOME THIS AUTUMN

September marks the start of autumn with thoughts turning to preparing homes for colder weather and considering home improvements in time for Christmas

This month is a great time to plan any major renovations as many builders, usually booked up over spring and summer, begin to have more time to secure home projects.

It’s also sensible to consider fixing any drafts, decluttering main living spaces to prepare for those long evening indoors and clearing gutters and drains of leaves and twigs while the weather is reasonable, to avoid blockages and potential damp problems.

Before the chill of winter is upon us, autumn is a great time to spruce up the outside of your property during the milder and hopefully drier climate. Painting your front door and house render, cutting back shrubs and plants and repotting baskets and pots with autumn colour can really increase your home’s curb appeal. Now is also a good time to clean and store garden furniture and barbecues to keep them spick and span for

spring. Now is also the ideal time for planting spring bulbs, new trees and shrubs and laying new turf. Garden offices are a great addition to any property and can provide a comfortable and private space away from the main living space.

This is also the ideal time to consider extra sources of heat such as gas fires or log burners. Wood stoves are becoming more eco-friendly and more efficient. This means that more heat is used to heat your home rather than being expelled up the chimney. They can also add character to a room and come in a variety of styles. If you already have a burner or open fire, ensure the chimney is swept regularly to avoid soot overload. A stylish fire can really add a wow factor to any property.

Another idea to reduce bills, add value and be reduce carbon footprint is investing in solar panels to power your home. Using the power of the sun is one of the most energyefficient ways to generate electricity for your home and may cost less than you think plus adding solar batteries allow you to store excess energy generated in the day to use at night.

Gas central heating boilers should be serviced regularly as nobody enjoys having no hot water on a frosty day! It pays to book

a service as soon as you can to avoid delays as the weather turns colder. A new heating system can also add value to your home and can feed other sources such as heated towel rails and underfloor heating.

If you are planning for guests at Christmas this year, you may even consider adding extra space in your home such as a conservatory, orangery or garden room. Not only will these let in more light in your home, they can be utilised for a variety of uses such as a playroom, dining room or office. Done well, these can add value to your home and may not require planning permission. You can also add value to your property by adding an extra bedroom to your house which could be through a loft or garage conversion. Perhaps you have the space to create one room from two by removing a wall to create a larger area? Open plan kitchens are currently extremely popular for a family friendly heart of the home.

and around the home: space under the stairs, garages and out houses and a range of clever furniture solutions such as hallway tidies and under bed storage plus stylish boxes, baskets and shelving. A talented joiner or carpenter could also offer a bespoke and elegant solution to utilise the most awkward of spaces. Hibernating indoors triggers thoughts of warmth and comfort. Could it be time for a new comfortable sofa? A dreamy new bed?

Perhaps a new snuggly throw or comfortable new eiderdown? Hues of pink, from hot raspberries to dusky blushes, are the trend at the moment so adding accents of these colours in your home this autumn will keep your home al a mode. Another resurgence is the 1970s vibe with its bold patterns and ‘Bloomcore’, taking inspiration from gardens, flowers and nature, so you can dare to be bold if you are brave enough! n

You may find yourself spending more time in a soothing hot bath as the outdoor chill increases. Is it time to upgrade your bathroom? There are so many beautiful choices of bathroom suites available but even refreshing tile grout, redecorating or updating towels and décor can make a huge difference.

It may also be a good time to get carpets cleaned or even replaced. An important part of maintaining good air quality and reducing dust is keeping carpets clean and so as we prepare to spend more time indoors, this is a good habit to adopt.

Staying indoors for longer periods can also be the inspiration to declutter and add extra storage. If you have the space, why not create a boot room for muddy wellies and extra coats to keep everything in one designated area. Pantries and larders have made a comeback whether a separate room or clever free-standing units. These can be an effective way to store items out of sight. There are also lots of ideas for storage solutions elsewhere in

MAKING FLOORS FABULOUS

What makes Gainsborough Flooring unique in the flooring sector is that we’re not afraid of challenges. We’ve been faced with many projects which initially look straightforward and turn out to be rather complicated. One such project was for a domestic client where we installed flooring in their dining room, lounge, hall and study.

new floor. This pushed the installation back by a few weeks which required our team rearranging their schedules to ensure the flooring was fully prepared.

Once the new beams were installed, the subfloor needed further attention to get it level so the new flooring could run seamlessly throughout, which was achieved with only the slightest decline which was completely unavoidable. The subfloor was half wooden beams, which required plywood preparation and the other half required screeding.

Due to the complexity of the project, we carried out several site visits during and after the new beams were installed so we knew exactly what to expect before the fitting commenced.

Our client was delighted with the results and commented, “This certainly wasn’t an easy project, but I can’t fault the service from the Gainsborough Flooring team, who were considerate, polite, tidy and delivered every aspect to the highest standard. We’ve received so many compliments from family and friends, particularly as the distinctive laying patterns and quadrant border create such a powerful impact as you move from one room to the next.”

During our first survey we picked up that the subfloor required some repair work, however, we hadn’t initially anticipated just how much!

The uplift revealed that all the wooden beams below had rotted and therefore needed replacing before we could start fitting the

Our team kept the client abreast throughout the entire process to ensure they understood exactly what we were doing and why.

The client selected Karndean Art Select Prairie Oak planks with a quadrant border for the entire area. Inspired by wood sourced from European forests, it has a beautiful array of pale earthy browns, with the lighter shades offering a stylish modern alternative

With two cats, a dog and teenagers in the house, the stunning Karndean flooring also carries the required robustness and is easy to clean and maintain!

Tell me your first experience with fashion and how you got to where you are now?

“At school, Southlands High School in Chorley, I was introduced to textiles by my teacher, Mrs. Hamilton. I found the subject fascinating and I remember making my first dress! I would say I’m where I am today through determination, drive and passion –not necessarily for fashion, but for success and leaving a legacy!”

What made you get into fashion design?

“I was working as a model and I was looking at the designers, the other models, the organisation and management of the show and I thought to myself – I can do this! Later that night, I sat down with my partner and my mum and they encouraged me to follow my dream, so I took the bull by the horns and ran with it!”

TAKING FLIGHT

Fashion historian Scott William Schiavone, meets Preston-born, acclaimed fashion designer Ross Griffiths. Ross’ label, Kingfisher Couture, is set to take this year’s London Fashion Week by storm. Here, Scott gets the inside story on his life, fashion and winning awards. Photography: Zuzu Valla

Do you have a favourite look from the collection?

“No, no, I don’t! They’re like my babies, I love all of them! But… if I had to pick one, it would probably be the Rose dress because it symbolises the beauty of Eden’s first bloom. No one would have seen a rose before and to experience such beauty must have just been captivating.”

Would you say that’s connected to blossoming as a person and as a creative?

“Yes exactly! I have to mention that the models I’m using for the show are all cancer patients from Sam’s Diamonds Cancer Support Charity. They support about 400 women across the UK living with cancer. And that’s what this partnership is about. It’s about embracing who we are and fighting the battles life throws at us to become the person we are born to be.”

Which designers, past and present, do you admire or take inspiration from and why?

“I don’t really take inspiration from other designers. I take inspiration from situations, historic moments and people. However, if I was to look to anybody as a style icon, it would always be Audrey Hepburn – timeless, classic, elegant!”

You have won some pretty impressive awards, including This is ICON Emerging Designer 2023 and SME International Best Couture House in the North West 2023. How does it feel to be recognised and rewarded for your work?

to an industry that is sadly being knocked off the school curriculum! As a young LGBTQ+ kid, I was introduced to textiles by my teacher at high school and it changed my life! It’s that that got me to where I am today.”

Tell me about the inspiration for your debut collection at London Fashion Week this September.

“The inspiration is The Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark and The Great Flood, when the world was taken back to its raw creative state. Disembarking Noah’s Ark, even as a human or an animal, you were entering a new world where nobody knew what to expect. For example, I designed the Rose dress, which was inspired by the beauty of Eden’s first rose. That’s basically the starting point for the collection.”

“I’ve been asked this question before, and it’s one of the questions that I find really hard to answer because, okay, yes, I may have been recognised as a ‘designer’, but I don’t see it. I am just a guy that likes to make dresses and make women and people feel good. But to be recognised as a fashion designer and showing on schedule at London Fashion Week, only two and a half years since starting, is absolutely incredible.”

What’s next after London Fashion Week?

“I wish that I could tell you that, but I’m sworn to secrecy! Seriously though, if anything can come from London Fashion Week, it would be about community and raising awareness

What advice would you give to designers who are just starting out?

“Don’t worry about other people. Don’t worry about what other designers are doing. Ignore the haters. Don’t be afraid to fail first time and make mistakes, because that’s how you learn. I don’t have any formal qualifications in textiles, art, design, anything like that! But I am who I am today, because of pure passion, drive and determination for what I do. Be your biggest achievement!” n

Reduced stress: Men who embrace healthier forms of masculinity that prioritise emotional expression and vulnerability may experience reduced stress and improved mental health outcomes.

• Stronger relationships: Men who take an active role in caregiving and parenting may experience stronger bonds with their partners and children.

• Increased sense of belonging: Men who work towards creating more inclusive and equitable communities may experience an increased sense of belonging and connection.

Negative impacts:

• Role confusion: Men who struggle to reconcile their traditional gender role expectations with newer, more flexible gender roles may experience confusion and uncertainty about their identity and purpose.

experience a sense of personal fulfilment and satisfaction as they challenge harmful gender stereotypes and contribute to a more just society. Men who take on caregiving roles may also experience greater closeness and bonding with their children, as well as a sense of personal development as they learn new skills and take on new responsibilities. However, men who struggle to adapt to changing gender roles may experience feelings of confusion, anxiety, or even a sense of loss as they grapple with changing expectations and norms. Men who experience pressure to conform to traditional gender roles may also feel a sense of social isolation or exclusion if they do not fit the stereotypical mould of what it means to be a man.

Furthermore, men who have internalised toxic masculinity may experience feelings of shame, guilt, or inadequacy as they confront the harmful effects of their beliefs and behaviours. It may take time for these men to unlearn harmful gender norms and develop healthier attitudes and behaviours, which can be a challenging process.

The changing role of men in society can have both positive and negative psychological impacts, depending on how it is experienced by individuals and the broader social context in which it occurs.

On the positive side, men who embrace more equitable and progressive gender roles may

Positive impacts:

• Greater sense of fulfilment: Men who take on caregiving responsibilities or actively work towards gender equality may experience a greater sense of fulfilment and purpose in their lives.

• Social backlash: Men who challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes may face social backlash, including ridicule, harassment, or even violence, which can take a toll on their mental health.

• Resistance from others: Men who attempt to take on new roles and responsibilities may face resistance or pushback from those who are invested in maintaining the status quo.

• Increased pressure: Men who take on more responsibilities, such as caregiving or actively working towards gender equality, may experience increased pressure to perform in these roles, leading to feelings of stress.

However, during my work as a Time Line Licensed Practitioner I see a number of instances where men are hugely uncomfortable with the negative emotions they feel around gender equality. Consciously, they have no issue with it, however subconsciously it stirs up unwanted and unexplained emotion. Through Time Line Therapy we often find that these emotions are passed down through a past life or genealogically. When we release those emotions, the conflict disappears. n

IT’S OFTEN MUCH EASIER TO CARRY OUT RESTORATION WORK ON MULTIPLE TEETH RATHER THAN REPLACING A SINGLE TOOTH, WHICH CAN BE MORE OF A CHALLENGE

Riaz, Ursula was told that a dental bridge was not the ideal solution as it would have affected the two healthy teeth either side. “Usman was fantastic,” recalls Ursula. “He really put me at ease. It was a big deal for me, as I was really concerned about how

CONFIDENCE RESTORED A

first responder working in the care sector, Ursula Rosimus had always been conscious about her teeth, having had a crown fitted many years ago. Just before the pandemic in 2020, she began to develop problems around the crown, as she explains: “I had an abscess and when I consulted a dentist, I was told a front tooth would have to be removed.”

Removing the top left front tooth resulted in an unsightly gap, so Ursula was advised to have a single tooth denture fitted, which was unbearable: “It was awful, but I knew I just had to get used to it. I was very selfconscious about it but there was nothing I could do as we were in the middle of Covid.”

When Ursula eventually managed to get an appointment with an NHS dentist, they suggested a bridge be fitted, which would replace the uncomfortable denture: “I felt very rushed. I didn’t know what to do so my husband suggested I speak with Dr Usman at Renovo Dental.”

During her consultation with Dr Usman

the issue could be resolved.”

Dr Usman, a highly experienced clinician with a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Ursula, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said there was significant bone loss at the site of the

missing tooth, he said a dental implant was certainly possible.”

Working alongside Usman on Ursula’s dentistry, was highly experienced periodontist and implant surgeon Dr Khurrum Hussain, who completed training in periodontology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute.

Dr Usman explains: “Ursula was missing a tooth in the aesthetic zone. She was struggling with a loose-fitting temporary denture and it really affected her confidence. She just couldn’t smile.

“During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Ursula didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.”

The next step was a consultation with specialist periodontist Dr Khurrum, who deals with degenerative bone issues and gum profiling. He carried out the bone graft as Ursula explains: “Where the crown had been I had very little bone – I had far less than the average person.”

carrying out the treatment,” explains Dr Khurrum.

“Our aim is always to get gum tissue and bone strong and health before we carry out further work. The foundations have to be strong.”

As a new clinic, Renovo has invested in the latest digital technology, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is accurate, safe and comfortable and results in faster healing.

“The whole procedure was very slick and more importantly, pain-free. Dr Khurrum kept checking that I was okay as he conducted the graft,” says Ursula, who returned to Renovo a few months later to have the implant procedure.

“The implant looks and feels like my own tooth. My top teeth now are great – it’s really boosted my confidence.

“A colleague at work complimented me on

my teeth and I explained all the problems I had and told them about Renovo and the implant – she couldn’t believe it as it looked so natural!”

Her treatment at Renovo has now given Ursula the confidence to wear aligners to straighten her bottom teeth: “It’s been quite a journey but it’s all been worth it. The implant has made things so much easier.

“I am so glad I made the decision to go to Renovo Dental, I can’t fault them, they have all been brilliant. I have to say, it’s been a good investment. I like smiling now!”

Speaking about Ursula’s treatment plan, Dr Usman says: “When Ursula came to Renovo Dental it was evident that her upper left front crown had failed some time ago and the resulting extraction left her with compromised gum and bone tissue in the area. Ursula was desperate to have the missing tooth replaced.

“The end result was a bespoke metal-free porcelain tooth which perfectly matches her natural existing teeth.

“It’s often much easier to carry out restoration work on multiple teeth. Replacing a single tooth, in the smile zone, is much more of a challenge. The gum tissue and the implant restoration must be in perfect harmony with the smile.

“Now it looks and feels like a real tooth –Ursula is very sociable and it really has been a confidence booster.” n

A bone graft helps prevent tooth loss by holding your tooth in place. It also serves as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. The technique also involves applying tissuestimulating proteins, which are the same proteins found in developing tooth enamel, which encourage the growth of healthy bone and tissue.

“There is often a general lack of awareness of what can be done in terms of the latest techniques, treatments and technology. Too often patients are told that the treatment for gum disease and bone loss is not possible. Yes, it is more complex, impossible it is not. That depends on the skillset of the team

FIELDS OF DREAMS

Behind an unassuming iron gate in Wrea Green lies acres of land which is proving to of immense benefit to the local community with more big plans on the horizon. Alma Stewart visits Blackburns Farm Nurseries and Wildlife Centre to discover more

You would never think that a double gate, just off Ribby Road could lead to the most amazing open countryside which encompasses the potential of so many community-based opportunities.

On entry, the long drive leads to an enormous area with a polytunnel, workshop and even a newly built education centre with so much multi-use potential. Welcome to Blackburns Farm Nurseries and Wildlife Centre!

Having just achieved charitable status, the Bradshaw family who own the land have already established a well-loved area within their acreage – the Remembrance Wood –which many locals will recall was created for families to plant trees in memory of those lost during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sadly, Andy Bradshaw was one of the first people to get Covid in the Fylde though thankfully, the symptoms were not too severe. Later, during the lockdown, with

all the rules and regulations all the family were together in the home. Andy, wellknown for his can-do, helpful attitude to life, realised that five acres could be turned into a wonderful space. There were so many people losing loved ones and many could not attend funerals because of the restricted numbers and so unable to say a final goodbye.

different varieties of memorial trees that have been dedicated by people from all over the North West. Not only a place for families to come, the area is open to locals to walk around the area, admire the trees, pond and wooden sculptures and take in the tranquillity the space has created.

More recently, Andy bought more land adjacent to the woods with the plan to create more opportunities to serve the local people making Blackburn’s a total area of around 90 acres. And its future plans are just as big.

This five acres was hoped to become a special space to remember loved ones and so the Remembrance Wood was born.

Three years later, the wood now has 750

Kirsty Cropper, Project Manager at Blackburns, explained: “After the pandemic, it became apparent how much it had affected people’s mental health – the whole world had changed. People who wanted trees in the Wood had some really heart-breaking stories, many about not being able to attend funerals. Andy and family were keen to continue to use the land to support the wider community.”

A large polytunnel has been created to grow

WE SUPPLY BETWEEN THREE AND SIX CRATES OF PRODUCE A WEEK TO THE FOOD BANK IN NEARBY KIRKHAM

a number of fruits and vegetables including beetroot, courgettes, tomatoes, melons, onions, peas, beans, cabbage and garlic.

Volunteer Bernard Pendleton, who worked at Myerscough College across many departments for nearly 30 years, said: “We have created this space for a few reasons. We grow the produce to encourage local community groups and schools to come along and learn about horticulture. This is great for wellbeing but is also highly informative about the process of growing your own food in order to be able to feed yourself and your family – a particularly useful skill in the cost-of-living crisis.

“We also grow our own produce with the aim of supplying a potential onsite café within the education centre. Furthermore, we supply between three and six crates of produce a week to the food bank in nearby Kirkham.”

W ithin an adjacent section of the land, a lavender field has been created. The 500 plants have been interspersed with fruit trees and the idea for this is to create a calming space for wellbeing activities such as yoga, Pilates and breath work.

Bernard continued: “The aroma of the lavender here is just fantastic. The lavender plant is thought to provide stress relief and have anti-inflammatory properties so what better space to use to boost wellbeing. Can you imagine being out here on a warm

day just enjoying the perfume and letting it relax you.”

Travelling in an open-sided truck, Bernard shows the many aspects of the space pointing out areas where projects have started and areas where ideas have been formed to utilise specific places.

He says: “We have earmarked seven areas to build bird hides which will be a fascinating addition to the farm. We have also planted

4500 hedging plants and we are keeping everything here as organic as possible. We have completed this with the help of volunteers. The 13 ponds on site attract a variety of wildlife.”

The aim is to create a wellbeing centre where instead of relying on GP medication, people can feel better naturally by being outdoors and enjoying nature. There will be a number of free workshops for a variety of ages and abilities – a haven to escape and enjoy a range of activities. n

The farm will be open to the public in the coming months so visitors can experience for themselves the magic of this very special place

Prior to this there an open day, and activities being held at the farm on Saturday 9th September between 10am and 2pm

DOGS WITH A DIFFERENCE

Lisa is a volunteer from Preston and has been volunteering for Guide Dogs for almost two years, she is currently looking after her second puppy, a yellow Labrador called Archie. Lisa was the winner in the ‘Person-Centred’ and ‘Expert’ categories at the charity’s local Volunteer Awards this year held at Guide Dogs North West Regional Centre in Atherton. Volunteers’ Week takes place every year and is a time to recognise and thank volunteers at Guide Dogs UK. Lisa attended the awards ceremony and was thrilled to be recognised, commenting afterwards, she said: “I was so shocked to be a winner of one award, let alone two awards! I do what I do, with all my volunteering roles just to help others less fortunate than me, not for any recognition or praise. I am totally over the moon to be the recipient of both my awards and grateful to those who nominated me. I am honoured to accept them and will continue promoting Guide Dogs, raising puppies, and much needed funds.”

Puppy raisers are vital to the early development of guide dogs, teaching basic commands and helping them get used to different environments. The role involves supporting puppies for the first 12 to 16 months of their lives before they begin their specialised guide dog training.

After winning the awards, Lisa, along with puppy Archie had the pleasure of being interviewed by Paul Crone for Granada Reports.

The feature raised awareness on the critical need for more volunteers in fundraising roles and the need for more puppy raisers and training dog fosterers.

It’s hard to believe Lisa has time to get involved in fundraising as well as caring for Archie, but she thoroughly enjoys it. Lisa’s latest project for the Preston fundraising group has included coordinating and managing a raffle in her local area.

Sourcing all the prizes herself by contacting organisations in the North West for donations, the total value of prizes comes to more than £1700. The top prizes include a studio tour and two tickets for Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch, Ribby Hall Aqua Thermal Journey and afternoon tea for two, luxury dog bed, a designer handbag, free flower deliveries from Freddie’s Flowers, plus so much more!

Anyone interested in buying raffle tickets or interested in joining the Preston fundraising group for Guide Dogs, visit the Facebook page. More details on becoming a volunteer fundraiser can be found on the Guide Dogs website.

The raffle draw will take place at Guide Dogs North West Regional Centre in Atherton on Thursday 28th September 2023.

CHALLENGING A WILL

Should I respect a person’s wishes after death, or can I challenge a will? Tom Howcroft, Senior Associate with Forbes Solicitors advises

CLAIMS UNDER THE INHERITANCE (PROVISION FOR FAMILY AND DEPENDANTS) ACT 1975

There are various categories of applicants who can pursue a claim under the Act. The most common types being a spouse or civil partner, a cohabitee living as if married or in a civil partnership, children (adult or minor) or someone who was being maintained by the deceased before death.

If the current distribution of an estate fails to make reasonable financial provision for you, you may have a worthwhile claim under the Act. There are several relevant factors under the Act and each case is unique depending on the facts.

Challenging the validity of a will is not an easy process and there needs to be clear evidence present to support the challenge. Although the circumstances and terms of a will may appear suspicious, without the supportive evidence present, a challenge will likely fail at trial.

Evidence is often found within medical records, on the file of the solicitors who drafted the will and through making enquiries with those who were present at the time the will was executed.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

The recent case in Michigan regarding Aretha Franklin’s estate gained interest in the media due to the nature of the circumstances.

A handwritten will found years after death, stuffed down a sofa, was ultimately decided as valid and dictated the distribution of the multi-million-dollar estate.

In England and Wales, the number of estate or will disputes continue to rise. Rather than just to ‘say a little prayer’ and hope your homemade will is sufficient, it is usually advised that appropriate legal advice is sought. The advice will vary depending on a person’s assets, their wishes and the nature of any potential claims against their estate.

Although a will prepared and signed following appropriate legal advice will often make it more difficult to challenge post death, it is not entirely bullet proof from a potential claim.

Whether we are acting on behalf of a claimant or defendant, Forbes seek to achieve the best outcome for the client, often through the appropriate use of negotiation or mediation. Understanding the client’s motives and empathising with them at a difficult time is at the forefront of our minds when providing pragmatic advice.

CHALLENGE TO THE VALIDITY OF A WILL

There are several ways to challenge the validity of a will and the most common grounds include the following:

1. L ack of testamentary capacity

2. L ack of knowledge and approval of the terms of the will

3. Undue influence and fraud

4. L ack of proper formalities (ie a failure to validly execute the will)

Forbes Solicitors are a nationally recognised law firm with a specialist team of solicitors who have a proven track record of successfully and efficiently concluding contentious probate issues.

We undertake complex and high value cases and represent both claimants and defendants. Our team has real expertise and you can therefore be assured that you will receive the best quality expert advice and service.

We offer a no obligation initial conversation and will assess how we can assist you with your dispute. We offer a range of price and payment options, or in appropriate cases, offer deferred fee funding, or ‘no win, no fee’ agreements. n

At certain times of the year, we see a significant spike in divorce enquiries. The most well-known of these is what has been dubbed ‘divorce day’, the first working Monday of the year. However, we have also seen an influx of enquiries coming in the weeks following the school summer holidays.

While holidays, whether spent abroad or at home, can offer a chance for relaxation and rejuvenation, in reality, there are lots of

aspects which can put strain on a relationship. The logistics of planning and following an itinerary to make sure you make the most of your time, especially if there are children involved, can mean that one or both spouses can end up having a less relaxing break.

advice of a professional in order to ensure the correct process is followed to achieve the best outcome.

It’s important to consider:

Children – You will want to ensure the separation has minimum impact on any children involved and consider how arrangements regarding them will work going forward.

There is also the fact that, on holiday, you are more likely to spend larger amounts of time together with little break from each other, while in the real world, you would often spend time away from each other, for instance, due to work commitments. This prolonged time together can highlight aspects of the relationship which are not so perfect, leading to questions about the viability of the marriage long-term. We found the same thing when the country came out of lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic where couples were forced to spend long periods of time together when they wouldn’t ordinarily.

Choosing to separate is not a position any couple wants to find themselves in and is of course a distressing time but once the decision has been made, it is vital you both seek the

Pensions – If one of you has given up work or moved to part-time working in order to raise your children during the marriage, this may have had an impact on your pension contributions over the years meaning that you may be set to retire with considerably less pension. In this instance, it’s important to look at pensions in a divorce settlement, to ensure you are protected.

Property – If you jointly own property, you will need to consider how you want this to be dealt with. This could be through the sale of the property or by buying out the other’s share. n

WHACKY RACES!

more entertaining, with the funds raised going to the much-loved local charity, St Catherine’s Hospice. The main sponsor for the derby is Raymond James Ribble Valley, and it was at their Longridge office that I met ‘chief resource-getter’ Gary Ward.

It’s been nearly a year since I last saw a giant mouse chase a wedge-shaped cheese down Berry Lane. The cheese had wheels, so it got away, and the mouse said he’d try using roller skates next time.

No, I wasn’t hallucinating. The scene I just described really did take place, causing great hilarity for thousands of spectators. It was just one of many delights from the whacky races of Longridge Soap Box Derby – and soon we will have more of the same to enjoy, as this year’s sequel is on Sunday 17th September.

Organised by the Love Longridge business group, this year’s event promises to be even

One of the founding members of Love Longridge, Gary explains what inspired him to start such an ambitious project: “I was walking into work in January 2022, when I looked at the slope outside our building and thought ‘Hmmm. Great place for a race.’ Red Bull have been staging kart races for years and I’d seen how popular they were, with a similar event in my hometown of Stockport. So, why not Longridge?”

The logistics of putting such an event together are not for the faint-hearted. Gary didn’t want this to be a ‘bought-in’ packagestyle event. He felt it should be totally homeproduced by people in or around the town.

Alan Veale recalls all the fun of last year’s Longridge Soap Box Derby and looks forward to the next Photography: Mr Fred Little Photography: Mr Fred Little

Key to any race are the participants, so local businesses and individuals were encouraged to build a vehicle (soap box) to a design that had to be functional enough to cross the finish line, but could be as hare-brained in design as possible, with the emphasis on fun!

The phrase ‘How difficult can it be?’ must have haunted many of those involved in the lead up to derby day. Like the physical hurdles to be negotiated by karts in the race, there were several occasions when the entire project nearly came unstuck – one of which was the death of Her Majesty the Queen, just 10 days before the scheduled event. Several organisations had to withdraw because of restrictions imposed during the mourning period. Then there was anticipation over the date for the State Funeral. What if they should clash? Fortunately, the joyous and crazy antics in Berry Lane preceded the regal solemnity in London by 24 hours.

As already mentioned, last year’s race included an entry from Butler’s Cheese in the form of a wedge of their popular Blacksticks Blue. That was just one of 14 karts competing throughout the day, powered by gravity and steered in blind panic past obstacles like hay bales, pools of water and wooden ramps. Expect similar scenes this time, but with double the number of entries, and maybe a few surprises.

about building the perfect bike for speed. The area’s businesses have thrown their weight behind the race with many of last year’s teams entering again. Nadia Riley from Buckhurst Plant Hire explains what it means to them: “Longridge Soap Box Derby was a highly positive experience for us. We generated significant attention and engagement from the local community, particularly across our social media platforms.

dance routine before sending their karts off down the Berry Lane descent – this was one of the highlights of last year’s race day, and as Gary Ward explains, the event is not just about raising funds: “We want to encourage people and organisations to be supportive of each other, contributing resources for the mutual benefit of everyone in the Longridge area. This is a practical opportunity to demonstrate that even in times of austerity, we can all come together, do something positive, and have fun doing it.”

On this occasion spectators are likely to witness a helicopter speeding at very low level along Berry Lane. But don’t panic! The small-scale version will be representing North West Air Ambulance. Longridge shop manager Jill Wright explains: “We are building our kart from anything and everything. The basic frame is an adult trike and we are removing the brakes, putting on new tyres and building a steel shell around it to replicate an air ambulance helicopter.”

The steel is donated by Burnley firm Castle Sheet Metal, while the build is in the safe hands of Jill’s dad, Bob Wright, and two of the shop volunteers. Bob used to race motocross bikes worldwide, so he knows all

A video posted of our kart gained a million views on TikTok! The race aligned well with our core values with it being a family event, and we were able to showcase our commitment to community involvement. The greatest win was for our team and its unity.

Throughout the process, from making the kart to participating in the race, our staff enjoyed the experience. That sense of fun and common purpose gave the entire business a feel-good factor which sits well with our employees, customers, suppliers and the community generally.”

Whether you’re a helicopter or a dump truck, a cheese or a mouse, each team also has to perform a 20-second choreographed

I’ll let Wayne Hayhurst, Branch Principal at Raymond James Ribble Valley (main sponsor) have the final word: “Longridge has faced a number of economic and social headwinds over the last couple of years but it remains the place I am proud to call home, both in a business and a personal sense. If our involvement helps light the fire for other businesses and individuals to be involved that would be tremendous. The Soap Box Derby gives Longridge the opportunity to say to its residents and visitors, old and new, it’s not just a great place to live, but has a real sense of community and purpose. I’m looking forward to seeing thousands of people lining the streets of our town once again on 17th September.” n

WEDDING TO WANDERLUST

SETTING A BUDGET

For those loved-up couples soon tying the knot, the wedding day offers that golden glow of light at the end of a seemingly endless, and let’s be honest, stressful tunnel! Your wedding day becomes your Shangri-La, the ecstasy of a day bursting at the seams with love, joy and celebration. But as the party winds down, the curtain calls – so what next? What adventure awaits in your newly-married lives together?

THE HONEYMOON!

Most 2022 weddings involved one to two years’ planning* and with so much involved, some honeymoon planning occasionally began once the wedding had happened. For most couples though, the excitement of having an adventure on the horizon is even more exciting than the wedding itself, as it is the first celebration just for the newlyweds. Here are some expert tips to bring your vision to life.

This is the boring but critical part! Although waking up over water in Bora Bora and hiking the Virunga mountains of Rwanda to find gorillas, are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, they do come with a hefty price tag. With the wedding to consider too, working out that magic number is crucial. Gift lists offer a fantastic means for loved ones to contribute toward memorable experiences or even flight upgrades to set off in style!

WHAT ADVENTURE AWAITS IN YOUR NEWLY-MARRIED LIVES TOGETHER?

EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM

Planning ahead reaps many rewards – from ‘early bird’ accommodation offers, access to the best flight fares and greater availability throughout. This means couples have the best opportunity to secure their number one choices and all at the best rates!

CONSIDER ‘SHOULDER MONTHS’

While everyone wants to visit their idyllic

destination in its perfect season, travelling during ‘shoulder months’ means travellers can enjoy their dream experiences in a season just outside peak times, taking advantage of significantly reduced prices while avoiding low season weather.

WHAT ABOUT A MINI-MOON?

Peak wedding season is August and September. However, a preferred honeymoon destination, the Maldives, experiences its wetter months around this time. So why not book a short break after the wedding, before taking a far-flung adventure when the time is right? Plus, it means two holidays!

ENJOY THE RIDE

Planning your honeymoon is something to truly get excited about. From the rush of a safari, luxuriating in paradise, diving coral reefs or indulging in local cuisine, the world is quite literally your oyster! Guide books remain fantastic tools, however social media boasts a wealth of inspiration so grab some fizz together and tuck into the feast of content out there! Start with exploring the globe right through to all the romantic details, a honeymoon is a truly magical journey and one which begins from the moment you open the door to a world of possibilities. n

JUST A PERFECT DAY

Your dream wedding day can become a reality with the beautiful location and excellent service. Newlyweds Luis and Alaina describe their recent wedding reception at Barton Manor Hotel and Spa

The proposal did not go as planned, but the Croston couple certainly had no complaints when it came to their wedding day.

The couple were married on 2nd June this year and following their church wedding ceremony, they chose Barton Manor for their reception. Luis explains: “After I had proposed to Alaina in 2021, we discovered a lot of venues were cancelling bookings and as we both have family travelling from other parts of the country, we really wanted a lovely venue that could also provide an overnight stay for our guests. We spent some time on Google trying to find somewhere fairly local to us, so when we came across Barton Manor, we knew we had to go and view it.”

The couple’s union started in 2017 when they met online. Alaina a school teacher from Salford and Luis an account manager originally from Kent, courted for four years before Luis popped the question on a trip to Scotland.

“I’m a real life-planner,” said Luis. “So I

arranged a wonderful trip to Scotland stopping at Fort William and Glencoe. At our first stop at a wonderful hotel, I planned to ask the big question at afternoon tea, but the table wasn’t quite private enough so I asked to move. Once in the quieter location, Alaina started to get a migraine, so I abandoned the plan.

“The next day, we took a trip on a steam train, again a fantastic location to propose. But Alaina’s migraine returned again and so the question wasn’t asked.

ALL IN ALL WE GOT TO RELAX AND JUST ENJOY OUR SPECIAL DAY

“With time running out to enjoy the trip post proposal, I decided the time was right in our room at a lovely B&B. I asked if Alaina wanted a cup of tea and gave her the empty cup with the ring in it.”

The couple made an appointment to visit Barton Manor to get a real-life sense of the venue and they were not disappointed. Luis said: “We were really impressed with what we saw – it ticked a lot of our boxes. We wanted the option of accommodation, somewhere large enough for our 100 guests but also somewhere intimate.

Photography: Peter Burns

“The event planner was absolutely fantastic and there was no hard sell. I work in sales so I didn’t want to find a pushy sales person. Instead, I found the booking process so easy and we were able to agree on a price, reflecting our needs, within our budget. We were also really pleased that the price was locked in despite the rise in prices that we have seen recently.”

The couple opted for a drinks reception on arrival followed by a wedding breakfast and later, an evening buffet.

“What we really liked was that we returned to the venue two or three times before the big day so we knew everything was on course as planned. We got to taste a variety of dishes before we chose the menu and met with the chef. It was all really impressive. We also mixed up some of the set menu slightly and nothing was too much trouble. We opted for canapes and drinks on arrival in the beautifully dressed garden. For the wedding breakfast, we chose a Caeser salad starter, lemon and thyme chicken with fondant potatoes and sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice-cream. There was also a sorbet course. We finished off with coffee and petite fours. Our guests were really impressed with the quality of the food particularly as it was made in such a large volume.”

Another thing that really impressed the couple was how the day was orchestrated so well from beginning to end. Alaina said: “With the amount of people staying at the hotel, you do wonder if there will be any hiccups, but everything ran like a dream. The last thing you want on your wedding day is stress but we can honestly say that from the minute we were welcomed from the wedding car, everything came together perfectly.”

Following the wedding breakfast in the Barton Suite, guests moved upstairs to the bar area, complete with balcony, where guests could relax and enjoy the photo booth while the main room was rearranged for the evening

entertainment which included a band and evening buffet with a wide variety of options to suit everyone.

Alaina continued: “The 10 item buffet was also amazing. It included spring rolls, chicken skewers and desserts. Again, the guests really enjoyed the food and really enjoyed the evening.”

At the end of the special day, the couple stayed in the Bridal Suite and their guests enjoyed the surrounding of the newly refurbished rooms.

“All in all we got to relax and just enjoy our special day. I’d definitely recommend Barton Manor Hotel & Spa. The staff were brilliant, attending to our every need to ensure we could all enjoy such an important occasion. They have even offered us a free stay at the hotel on our anniversary – can you get any better than that?” n

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF SAYING “I DO”

Its dramatic Gothic façade, beautifully restored Victorian conservatory, and glorious gardens and parkland provide a setting fit to sweep anyone off their feet. Continuing centuries of ancestral family marriages, Leighton Hall near Carnforth is marking its ‘first’ 35 years as a magical wedding destination, writes

“My grandfather opened the Hall to the public in 1958,” recalls Lucy Arthurs, direct descendant of the Hall’s famous Gillow furniture-making dynasty. “In the 1980s, my mother, Suzie, recognised Leighton could be somewhere really special for weddings, leading to our first on 8th August 1988.

“Drawing up plans for the 2023 season, we realised we’ve been hosting weddings for 35 years. So much has changed in that time: legal inclusion, people’s tastes, how we have been able to expand and individualise what we can offer, and of course coming through Covid. This made it the perfect time to reflect and celebrate this journey with those who’ve said ‘I do’ at Leighton.”

Couples, relatives and guests enthusiastically responded to Lucy’s invitation to contribute their Leighton wedding anecdotes and pictures for a celebratory visual timeline in the estate’s

tea room, stirring memories for Lucy and Leighton’s longstanding team members, too.

“Initially, ceremonies were held in a nearby church, with the reception here,” says Lucy.

“Early 1980s weddings tended to be small (even if ‘Princess Diana’ dresses weren’t!), and held in the hall itself. The 1990s brought big marquee celebrations, with a marquee attached to the house.

Victorian conservatory. Whether a micro wedding for 15 guests in our herb garden, or a marquee of 150 revellers, we focus on each couple as individuals.”

The public can enjoy viewing Leighton’s tea room wedding timeline display throughout 2023’s open house season until the end of September, with Leighton wedding stories and pictures continuing to be welcomed and shared via the Hall’s social media channels.

“The 2000s brought ground-breaking legislation of same sex partnerships, the 2010s same sex marriages, and the 2020s licenses for civil ceremonies and outdoor weddings. Throughout all the changes, Leighton’s hard working team have been here with support and inspiration!

“Every year, we’ve sought to increase, improve and innovate what Leighton can offer. Now we have five incredible ceremony locations to exchange vows in, from the original music room to our dazzling newly refurbished

Lucy remains busy overseeing summer weddings, planning mellow autumn ceremonies and sparkling winter celebrations: “Simply put, Leighton is too special a location not to share. It’s a privilege to be part of our couples’ dream day and we’re here to bring it to reality.” n

Now working from a dedicated studio, Lisa Marie started her cake-making from a small shop in Longridge. With a degree in the arts and having been a baking star from a young age, Lisa Marie combined her skills and began to make celebrations cakes: “My nana and mother taught me traditional baking skills,” she recalls. “After having a family, I realised I wanted to concentrate solely on wedding cakes as I absolutely adore the wedding industry!”

While current cake decoration trends remain largely rustic, Lisa has noticed a return to ‘retro’ formal-style decoration using royal icing and detailed piping: “I love this style as I can really show off my skills!”

“Taste is everything!” she says. “I source most of my ingredients fresh from local farms and suppliers,” says Lisa Marie, who says the current on-trend flavour is her totally indulgent butterscotch and cookie crumble cake filled with a Biscoff centre.

TENNIS HISTORY

Congratulations to the Stonyhurst College girls’ tennis team who finished eighth overall in the UK at the LTA Aberdare Cup National Tennis Championships at Nottingham. This is the first time Stonyhurst has made the final national stages of this prestigious LTA schools’ tournament in 74 years. More than 300 schools took part in the event and the Stonyhurst girls really did fantastically well to achieve this national top-eight status. The girls competed competitively in some very close matches and were within a few points of coming fourth.

DOCTOR’S ORDERS FOR DANIEL

Westholme INSPIRED Sixth Form student  Daniel Kirkwood is looking forward to a career in medicine after achieving four A*s in his A Levels. Daniel is off to study Medicine at Lancaster Medical School – his first choice – after achieving the A* grades in all four subjects, biology, chemistry, maths and further maths. Despite the national news of the grade boundaries, Daniel said: “I’m really happy with my results. They’re amazing – especially given how high above the grade boundaries they were.”

IB RESULTS

Stonyhurst is celebrating the class of 2023’s International Baccalaureate (IB) results with pride. The College is delighted to see the alternative programme to A levels grow in popularity at its Sixth Form, which looks set to take on even more pupils next year. Alice McNeill, Senior Deputy Head, said: “The IB programme at Stonyhurst continues to go from strength to strength with one of our largest cohorts ever this year. We are exceptionally proud of the progress each pupil made in each of the IB disciplines and at the same time, making the very best of all the opportunities here at Stonyhurst and making friends for life.”

DOUBLE SHORTLIST JOY

AKS Achieves, the summer holiday educational enrichment programme, has been shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding New Initiative’ category in this year’s Independent Schools of the Year Awards. This is one of two initiatives to be nationally recognised making the final twelve out of the thousands of entries. The senior school’s Inquiry Learning Initiative using the FOSIL framework has also been shortlisted in the same category. Year 7 students presented an academic poster on a topic that fascinated them and Year 12 students wrote a 2500 word essay with accompanying academic poster.

NEW VET SCHOOL BUILD

Morgan Sindall Construction has started building the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) new Veterinary School. The exciting project, which entails the partial refurbishment of a current building and the creation of the four-storey structure on UCLan’s Preston campus, will support the education of students from diverse backgrounds to study and practice veterinary medicine and animal science. It will be a state-of-the-art centre of learning facility and will include several purpose-built training amenities, including high-specification anatomical skills laboratories, simulated operating theatres, microscopy labs, dental rooms and immersive teaching facilities.

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR HARRY

Westholme INSPIRED Sixth Form student Harry Smith was “ecstatic” to achieve four A*s in further maths, maths, physics and computer science in his A Level results. Harry who secured a place to study mathematics at Oxford University a year early, said the highlight of his time at Westholme over the past seven years has been the teachers. “They were always supportive when I needed anything or any help. They were always ready to go the extra mile for me. I’ve also made a lot of lifelong friends.”

EXCELLENT VALUE

Offering

When it comes to education, choosing the right school for your child is a crucial and often daunting decision. Offering an unrivalled educational experience in the Ribble Valley for three to 13-year-olds, Stonyhurst’s Prep School offers excellent value for money for happy pupils and their parents and is a route worth exploring for those with young children taking their first steps into education.

Children at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall experience the perfect balance of high academic excellence in a welcoming, stimulating and fun environment. The school combines cutting-edge academic innovation and excellent facilities with the deep stability and tradition of being a 200-year-old preparatory school, a key part of the 430-year-old Stonyhurst College. This extraordinary success story has much to do with the transformational change in all aspects of prep school life implemented by the strong team of hugely talented and enthusiastic members of the teaching and pastoral staff.

A DAY PUPIL EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER – ALL IN THE PRICE

There are many advantages to all children and their families, day and boarders, being part of a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week boarding school. In addition to the cultural enrichment of learning with pupils from around the globe, the flexibility to offer wrap-around care is a huge advantage for many parents with busy working lives.

An extensive local bus service provides routes from Cowling, Gisburn, Clitheroe, Preston and Burnley and is available for local children.

THE BROADER CURRICULUM AND LONGER SCHOOL DAYS AT STONYHURST GIVE TIME AND SPACE TO DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING

For those families interested in boarding, there are boarding options to suit when space is available, with weekend boarding if parents need to go away. Day children can experience boarding for two nights free of charge throughout the academic year.

AN EXCITING CURRICULUM FOR EXPANDING MINDS

Stonyhurst offers an extended day from 8am to 6pm – allowing for after-school ‘studies’ (homework) to be completed as well as a packed programme of stimulating on-site extra-curricular activities and an evening meal – all included in the price. All trips and extra-curricular activities, including swimming lessons, which form part of the curriculum from Pre-Prep are also fee inclusive. The broader curriculum and longer school days at Stonyhurst give time and space to develop critical thinking and cultural knowledge.

Stonyhurst offers a wealth of on-site extracurricular opportunities, including sports, arts and community service initiatives, ensuring pupils are equipped with critical life skills and a sense of social responsibility. These activities help pupils develop skills such as leadership, teamwork and time management, essential for success in both college and beyond. The broad and balanced curriculum in Years 5 and 6 is taught by subject specialists. For example, timetabled drama, swimming, dance, instrumental music, drama, French, Spanish, German and Latin are all part of the curriculum. The school,

an interesting and exciting broad curriculum, the value of a Stonyhurst education should not be underestimated

therefore, sees a good number of pupils joining at this stage in their education. A move in Year 5 to Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall will enable your child to thrive in a highly creative learning environment that prolongs their childhood in the most positive sense. For children joining from the state sector, it provides a much cherished ‘middle school’ option, (Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall goes up

to Year 8) to allow the children to make a much happier transition from junior to senior education.

Bringing to life their learning in class, teachers and children at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall have access to the artefacts and curator expertise of the oldest museum in the English-speaking world, the Stonyhurst Museum and Archives. The museum contains over 65,000 historical books and 30,000 artefacts, including a wide and rich collection of natural history pieces, exclusive and unique to Stonyhurst – a First Folio by William Shakespeare, Egyptian mummies, fossilised dinosaur dung and a prayer book that was once the property of Mary Queen of Scots. One of the extensive clubs and activities on offer to Stonyhurst’s youngest children as part of their co-curriculum learning is the ‘Young Curators’ group, which gives children the opportunity to handle and categorise these artefacts, bringing history and learning to life.

and self-esteem. This is validated through their latest ISI inspection results where the school was found to support children from a personal development perspective. The report documents that ‘pupils of all ages show excellent levels of self-understanding’ and ‘show strong levels of perseverance when faced with challenges’. Pupils were found to ‘demonstrate high levels of self-esteem’, in short Stonyhurst provides an environment to support happy children.

and ‘the overwhelming majority of parents agreed that the school actively promotes values of democracy, respect and tolerance of other people’, a reflection of Stonyhurst’s aim to develop men and women with a global outlook who can play a positive role in the world as outstanding people of the future.

Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, for all its traditions and heritage, remains at the cutting edge of modern practices and technology. The caring individual academic approach, ongoing investment in school resources and the team of committed individuals ensure that each child becomes the best they can be, confident, thoughtful and caring towards others. n Stonyhurst warmly invites children and their parents to discover all that its Prep School has to offer. ENTERPRISE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Rarely will you find anywhere that encourages and creates entrepreneurial and enterprise opportunities for children to experience aged four to 18. However, Westholme, described by some as a beacon of educational standards, does exactly that, writes

Starting with pupils in Westholme’s Prep R (Reception) right through to 18-year-old adults leaving Westholme’s INSPIRED Sixth Form, each and every child is provided with a vast array of opportunities to teach them real life skills both inside and outside of the classroom.

From the minute they arrive at the top independent school, each child is celebrated for who they are and empowered to ‘discover their element’. Westholme’s unique and powerful educational philosophy echoes that of the late Sir Ken Robinson, author, speaker and international advisor on how a creative and inspiring education should be. Westholme empowers pupils to develop the 21st Century

Essential Skills (21CES) needed to flourish in the rapidly-evolving and dynamic, presentday workplace – and 21CES at Westholme is interwoven throughout the school like a strand of DNA.

A new ‘little world’ learning environment has been created for the Prep R classroom. A large, bright space in the heart of the state-of-the-art, newly-built Prep consists of engaging ‘themed booths’ for children to role play and learn about professional careers. The booths have been designed to enhance and encourage independent learning, complete with relevant real-life props for children to explore. Westholme’s unique curriculum is comprised of six pillars: Maths and Science, Performing Arts, World Languages, Creative Arts and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences and Sport and the equal value placed on all six areas is consistently applied throughout the school from four to 18. This pioneering approach is one of the distinctive differences that sets Westholme apart from all other settings.

Westholme is so much more than ‘just a school’. As one Reception parent commented: “To see your child engaged, full of beans, thriving and, most importantly, enjoying their first foray into real education, is honestly a joy. We now realise that Westholme is a way of life, and the tools that he is already developing to equip him for his life, not just his education, are phenomenal. It is a very different approach that I didn’t see in other schools.”

A distinctive strand that runs through the unique Westholme educational philosophy provides numerous ways to develop confidence, entrepreneurial and enterprising skills. Over the summer term, students from Prep 6 form small businesses of their own and are challenged to pitch, ‘Dragon’s Den’ style, for an initial investment of £50. The Dragons put the business teams through their paces and the Prep pupils are encouraged to further develop and refine their impressive business plans. The resulting businesses are showcased at the Prep Enterprise Market, with the teams going head-to-head to see which could make the most profit after buying materials and manufacturing their products.

Dr Richard Robson, Westholme Principal, said: “This entrepreneurial challenge is wholeheartedly embraced by the Prep pupils who create their own business plans, carry out research, select a product based on criteria and explore aspects such as feasibility, cost-effectiveness, supply and demand, market forces and efficacy. This year, the Prep 6 pupils executed their plans perfectly from pancake makers to beauty products!”

Senior students and INSPIRED Sixth Formers also continue this journey of entrepreneurship throughout their school lives as the innovative independent school focuses on a skills-first approach to learning that prepares them in a very different way for the 21st century workplace.

Dr Robson’s passion is to provide a pioneering education that instils the 21st century essential skills of confidence, communication, leadership and adaptability, across the whole four to 18 school. Students benefit from visiting business leaders and entrepreneurs, who provide inspiring talks linked to their learning.

For 2023-24, eight guest speakers have been booked so far, from large multi-national corporations to successful local businesses. Senior students also have the opportunity to run a private limited company at Westholme called Westies. The shop, set up in 2015, allows students to hone their business skills through marketing, operations, HR and finance roles.

One INSPIRED Sixth Form student from last year, commented: “I’ve been encouraged

to grasp every opportunity life throws at me and with outstanding support from my teachers, I’ve been able to focus on my own ambitions and personal growth.”

What Westholme seamlessly achieves is bridging the gap between education and the real world, which of course incorporates career prospects as well as essential life skills, which will help students navigate successful careers. They develop such a powerful sense of self-regulation, self-discipline and a strong work ethic that is tangible when you talk

to these impressive individuals. It is not by chance that each and every student at Westholme is articulate, down-to-earth and aspirational. During their time at Westholme, students continuously sharpen their skills so by the time they leave the INSPIRED Sixth Form at 18, regular ‘realworld’ contact has prepared them for the future and how to make a lasting, positive contribution to society.

As one former pupil summed it up: “At Westholme, aspirations were strongly encouraged, along with a clear ethos that working hard was the way to achieve them. It’s an attitude that has been incredibly positive for me.” (Professor Sophie Scott, CBE, Director at UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience). n

A THING OF BEAUTY

Sleek, eye-catching and luxurious, the new Range Rover Velar is a joy to behold. It has style, substance and above all, class, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Roger Moore

Range Rover. Not simply a name, more of a statement. An icon. We’re talking top-end luxury, a collection of outstanding 4x4 vehicles of upmarket pedigree, comfortable holding their own in any company.

One super special member of the Range Rover family is the eye-catching Velar, a machine of genuine beauty – with the paperwork and silverware to back it up.

For this, my motoring friends, was once judged the ‘most beautifully designed vehicle on the planet’.

The jury? None other than the World Car Awards.

Enough said. Job done.

It was recently my ‘job’ (someone’s got to do it!) to test out the 2024 Range Rover Velar D200 2.0D Dynamic SE, with automatic 8-speed transmission.

The diesel engine combines with mildhybrid power, courtesy of a 48V motor, to produce an impressive 200 bhp and 44.1mpg.

The range includes the entry-level S, the Dynamic HSE and the big daddy Autobiography.

As for the other engines, there is the D300 mild hybrid (300bhp), the P250 petrol (250bhp) and the P400e petrol/plug-in hybrid (400bhp).

In stunning Arroios Grey, with Ebony perforated grained leather seats, fixed

panoramic roof, heated front seats, 20” Style 1089 10-spoke stain dark grey wheels and a host of other internal and external features, the Dynamic HSE certainly looked the business.

Long before stepping on board you knew this was a force for good, an event to be savoured.

You don’t so much drive the Range Rover Velar, you accompany it on its journey, sitting (somewhat smugly) in genuine comfort while all around you everything behaves impeccably.

You soon discover the joy of Range Rover’s

next-generation Pivi Pro infotainment, with a single curved screen and controls for climate, seating and radio conveniently on view and to hand. Shortcuts for frequently used features like media, navigation, camera and window de-misters are also permanently visible.

Pivi Pro has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, plus smartphone wireless charging, Bluetooth and a host of on-trend digital features.

Or, as Range Rover, like to say ‘driver conveniences’. Things like trip computer, voice control system, brake pad wear indicator warning light, service indicator, lane keep assist, blind spot assist, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition with adaptive speed limiter, front and rear parking aid, rear traffic monitor, speed proportional electronic power assisted steering (EPAS) and eCall emergency call system.

For those who enjoy changing driving modes then the list of options is extensive, from Eco through to Dynamic, while Range Rover also claims that the Velar is

the quietest in its class, thanks to noise cancellation technology.

Internal highlights include heated steering wheel, Isofix system on outer rear seats, rear air vents, twin front cupholders, ambient lighting, 14-way electrically adjustable front seats with driver’s memory function, overhead lighting console, rear centre headrest, bright metal pedals, passive front headrests, overhead stowage for sunglasses, twin sliding front centre armrest and more.

and approach lights plus rear animated directional indicators. Will that do?

Steering is impossibly easy, sight-lines excellent and décor soothing and somewhat understated.

And, of course, there is the prestigious Range Rover Velar badge, which adds another touch of class.

Talking of Velar, hands up if you can shine any light on the origins of the name?

Well, it actually derives from the Italian ‘velare’ meaning to veil or to cover. Why? Because back in the late ’60s a development engineer used it as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company, registered in London, actually produced 40 Velar-badged vehicles between 1967 and 1970.

In 2017, Range Rover decided it was time to mark that motoring heritage and the Velar as we now know it was born.

Its growth in popularity is easy to understand. This is a vehicle of style and substance, with appeal at every turn. Those judges were spot on – a thing of real beauty. n

The list of outside features is too long to detail, but here are a few to keep you going –roof rails, rear wash/wipe, automatic headlights and automatic headlamp levelling, heated washer jets, rain sensor windscreen wipers, body-coloured bumper, heated rear window with timer, follow-me-home headlights, trailer stability assist, matrix LED headlights with signature DRL, auto high beam assist, flush deployable exterior door handles, tailgate/boot lid spoiler, auto dimming interior rear view mirror, acoustic laminated windscreen, electric windows with one-touch open/close and anti-trap, power fold, autodimming, heated door mirrors with memory

TOP OF THE POPS

Is the BMW 1 Series the manufacturer’s best ever car? Paul Agnew delves into the past and looks to the future to discover why it remains a trendsetting icon. Photography: Peter Austin

To reach the ‘top of the pops’ in music, film, motors or any other global business for that matter, is a tough ask.

With competition intense and everyone striving for the big hit, you really do have to shape up.

But if you need a car which consistently hits all the right notes then, to paraphrase John Travolta, ‘Its the ‘1’ that you want!’

The BMW 1 Series is coming up to a 20th anniversary (longevity – always a true test of stardom) and it remains not only hugely popular but a genuine trendsetter.

Two decades on and it continues to offer the best in class driving dynamics, significantly enhanced interior space and the widest range of cutting-edge technologies available.

All presented in a progressive design that exudes serious attitude.

BMW’s best-ever car?

There are many out there who think so and that, in itself, is one massive accolade.

But what’s the secret behind the success

and just what makes it so well-liked across all age groups?

For starters it looks great, a carefully curated specification delivering maximum aesthetic appeal. It drives superbly well too –nippy and easy to handle while packing real zip and punch.

and many features as standard.

Take the range-topping M135i xDrive –a five-door, four-wheel drive with a two-litre motor capable of 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. Trust me, that is mightily impressive.

When you put your foot to the floor, the intelligent control logic system will send anything up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear axle. Milliseconds later, the M135i xDrive becomes four-wheel drive. You might fear such a performer must be heavy on fuel. Not so. Expect around 40mpg.

And, as for what you get within the basic price, here’s just a few:

Cruise control, heated front seats, front and rear sensors, multifunction steering wheel controls, sport automatic transmission with gearshift paddles, electric folding door mirrors, auto-dimming rear view mirror, Isofix child seat system, automatic air conditioning, LED headlights, DAB radio and extended storage.

Live Cockpit Professional comprises a 10.25” control display with touch function and Intelligent Personal Assistant, while the Connected Drive Package Professional offers Apple CarPlay, Concierge Services, Connected Parking and real-time traffic information.

The 1 Series also offers superior levels of comfort and practicality and, perhaps most significantly, it provides so much technology

In short, it means you are more connected than ever before and the combination of the two ‘Professionals’ ensures that you can

count on full support across any number of situations, simply just by opening your mouth and asking!

A word or two here about the amazing My BMW App, the universal interface to your BMW and to all other products and services from the motoring giant. It keeps you up to date on the status of your vehicle at all times and, depending on the equipment installed, it also makes remote access functions possible, such as locating the vehicle, locking and unlocking the doors.

Using the My BMW App, you can send destination addresses from your smartphone to the navigation system of your vehicle and integrate Amazon Alexa services.

Oh, I forgot to mention – M Sport steering, M Sport brakes, M Sport seat belts, M Sport suspension, M Sport leather steering wheel, M Sport seats (front), M Sport exterior styling, M Sport spoiler and all the renowned BMW features across teleservices, emergency call and online services.

Like I say, it’s a lot of car for your money and you can choose to upgrade with sun protection glass, parking assistant, 19” double spoke style alloy wheels, Harman/Kardon surround sound audio system and heated steering wheel.

The M135i xDrive certainly does great credit to BMW in general and the 1 Series in particular, showcasing an outstanding combination of agility, power and technology.

It’s a car with heritage, modern-day appeal and a guaranteed future.

It’s also for people who like their cars to look and feel great, include all the gadgets they could ever require and who don’t want to hang around. People with taste, style and a desire to stay out in front. People for whom time spent behind a steering wheel is a sheer pleasure, not a basic means to an end.

Could it be the ‘1’ that you want? n

FOR THE LOVE OF RUGBY

A Fylde based charity is proving that sport can make a huge difference to the lives of people of all ages – and wants more people to take advantage of the services they offer. Derek Quinn chats to Phill Mills and finds out about this Foundation’s extraordinary work

The Fylde Rugby Community Foundation covers the whole Fylde coast, with its strapline being ‘Rugby For All’. A thread which runs through everything it does, as the organisation constantly looks to provide a wide range of sporting and recreational opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds, many of which are free.

The Foundation was launched in 2020 with the goal of ‘improving access to rugby union in Fylde, Blackpool and Wyre by offering community pathways for participation and appreciation for the sport regardless of age, sex, religion or background’.

from just Phill at the helm to seven full time staff members, with more support staff helping too. It covers more than 80 primary and secondary schools in the area and has currently started working with Fylde Rugby Club and three other partner clubs in Garstang, Fleetwood and Thornton-Cleveleys.

And for Phill, there has never been a greater need for this kind of work in our communities. He said: “There has been a massive drop off in participation levels in rugby after Covid and to combat that we run eight different programmes all designed with the ‘Rugby For All’ message at its heart. Our key goal is to increase that participation through all our programmes from Rugratz Rugby for those aged three to five to Walking and Wheelchair Rugby as well as our range of school programmes.’’

Much of the Foundation’s success is due to Phill’s drive and dedication to make a difference.

Phill Mills is the Foundation’s Manager. A former player who represented Fylde and Lancashire before retiring through injury at the age of just 28, he has been with the charity since it started and is committed to seeing it expand to help as many people as possible.

In just three years the Foundation has grown

He said: “The reason that I am so passionate is that when I was at school, I never had any opportunity to play because there was no school team, so we just didn’t do it. That’s why it is important to me to drive an aspect of the foundation across the schools in the area because I know all the benefits and the impact it can have.”

THE FOUNDATION LOOKS TO PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF SPORTING AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS

The Foundation was borne out of a conversation between local businessman and rugby enthusiast David Craven (who is now Chairman) and Sir Bill Beaumont (World Rugby Chairman and now Honorary President of the Foundation).

It is now a registered charity and all funds generated by the foundation are pumped straight back into the community.

One of the strands of the Foundation is its Rugby Pathway Programme supported by Porsche Centre Preston. This initiative provides an opportunity for children and families facing adversity to become part of a rugby club, ensuring they can take part by providing support such as assistance with travel or kit if needed in an effort to introduce young people to the sport and lead to an increase in participation in relevant age group teams across the local community and not just at Fylde.

Said Phill: “If a youngster is in Blackpool and can’t get to Fylde for example, then we can pick them up and take them back each Sunday just so they can play. That kind of underpins all the programmes but it creates sustainability so we can ensure long-term participation.”

But it is not just on the pitch where the Foundation is having an impact. They are also

introducing rugby to the classroom via their Rugby Reading Champions programme.

This is designed to work with youngsters who would benefit from one-to-one and small-group work. The programme aims

wheelchair rugby which – like the other initiatives the Foundation provides – are growing in popularity and these are delivered across the Foundation’s partner clubs.

The charity has a number of committed Trustees such and participants such as David Perkins who fully backs the work of the Foundation.

He said: “I used to play a lot of rugby and am committed to getting more people playing the sport. But one thing the Foundation helps with too is general health and wellbeing.

“There is a massive mental impact in terms of getting people off their chairs and doing something as an individual and as a team.’’

The mental side of wellbeing is also covered by the Foundation as they arrange social events for participants.

David’s message is clear: “I really want to get it across that the Foundation offers something for everyone and we want as many people as possible to know about us and have a look to see what we have to offer.

to associate reading with sport while also developing children’s life skills such as teamwork and communication – which are both relatable to rugby.

The Foundation also ensures adults remain engaged with rugby through programmes such as walking rugby and

“The wheelchairs for the wheelchair rugby are provided too and the feedback we have had across the board has been amazing and I know that the Foundation’s work changes lives.’’ n

FABULOUS FRESHNESS YOU CAN TASTE

Farms in West Lancashire provide Preston customers a variety of home-grown vegetables within an incredibly short time from being cut from the ground as Alma Stewart learns from greengrocer, Baz Dawson. Photography: Lisa Brown

Born and bred in Hesketh Bank, Barry Dawson is no stranger to the local countryside. Aged just 16, Barry’s first job was a farm labourer at a local produce farm planting, caring for and cutting a host of cauliflowers, carrots and sprouts. Through his 15 years at the farm, Barry learned a lot about agriculture and grew his passion for creating the best possible produce from seed. Fast forward to 2021 and Baz now owns Fresh and Fruity greengrocers stall within Preston’s Market Hall.

Baz said: “It’s many people’s dream to give up the rat race, move to the countryside and live off the land. For me, I have always been living the dream.”

Baz works with Lodge Farm owned by brothers Henry and James Scrambler, third generation farmers in Hesketh Bank. It’s

from here that a lot of his produce for the stall is grown.

“With the fields only 12 miles away from Preston city centre, we can have veg cut and on the shelves in three hours. Not a lot of supermarkets can say that!” Baz added.

WITH

After a few years working in the groundworks trade, Baz missed working with fresh produce so he returned to the trade by working for Fresh and Fruity in Chorley with owners Allan and Tracy Taylor. The couple saw an opportunity to expand their business to the newly refurbished Preston Markets in 2018 where because of popularity, the stall expanded. When Covid hit, the business increased supplying fresh food deliveries to local people.

Baz said: “It was a very strange time throughout Covid, but luckily, a lot of the

THE FIELD ONLY 12 MILES AWAY FROM PRESTON CITY CENTRE, WE CAN HAVE VEG CUT AND ON THE SHELVES IN THREE HOURS

traders at the market saved their businesses and actually grew them by being able to offer deliveries, so we were really grateful that local people still held the option of buying local in high regard.

“So when Allan and Tracy decided to try semi-retirement, I jumped at the chance to take over Fresh and Fruity at Preston Markets. Allan and Tracy are still involved in the background, so it has all worked out really well.

“The traders at Preston Markets are like a family. We will regularly recommend each other when a customer is looking for cheese, meat, fish etcetera and with the Animate complex currently being built behind the Market Hall and due to open within a couple of years, I am certain that the trade it will

bring into the city centre will have a positive affect for us all.”

Most of the produce, around 60 per cent, comes from Hesketh Bank and surrounding villages. Patrons can enjoy a host of fresh delights such as a variety of potatoes, cauliflowers, cucumbers, onions, broccoli, kale, turnips, carrots, cress, peas. The imported fruit is still sourced locally at a Preston wholesaler and includes seasonal favourites such as English cherries, juicy oranges and donut peaches – an array of tasty delights to enjoy!

And if running a stall in the centre of Preston wasn’t enough, Baz has also created a pop-up stall outside of his house where locals can purchase the fresh produce as

they pass by, a firm favourite place to pick up something for the weekly food shop.

Currently, the stall is supplying the highly popular ‘Cousin Barrie’s’ tomatoes, which the local Taylor family have been growing for more than 75 years, passing down the family secrets to growing the most perfect, tastiest tomatoes (and I can certainly vouch that they are absolutely delicious!).

Another seasonal favourite will be the pumpkins grown in Tarleton, perfect for Halloween Jack O’Lanterns as well as a host of delicious dishes such as soups and pies, that can be made from the meaty flesh.

As well as the seasonal fruit and vegetables, customers can also buy other locally sourced items such as firewood, herbs, toffee apples, bedding plants and juices and in December, holly pots and Christmas wreaths. The stall also supplies a number of local pubs, cafes and coffee shops with the fresh produce.

Baz added: “There may be supermarkets that promote their fruit and veg at a low price, but going on weight, three of their peppers, say, are the same weight as one of our local sourced peppers. On many items we can beat the price of these retail giants. But when it

comes to taste, few can compete with the difference in flavour when produce has been picked and transported for sale so quickly. Many of our customers would now not shop anywhere else because they know the speed in which their food has come from ground to shelf.”

“I’m really grateful to all our local growers for making Fresh and Fruity so successful and for being able to continue to offer fantastic quality produce that customers can rely on.” n

EXQUISITE EXPERIENCE

With stunning décor and floor to ceiling windows overlooking The Woodland Spa’s incredible pools and Pendle Hill beyond, Bertram’s is a chic, cosmopolitan restaurant that is truly spectacular. Forget Burnley – this could be Barcelona, Berlin or even Bali!

for starters Karen opted for Argentinian red prawns poached in chardonnay, shallot and black garlic and served with a seared king scallop. I chose the grilled Wyre Valley asparagus with crispy duck egg, pecorino and smoked garlic hollandaise.

Both were out of this world – two delicate and flavoursome dishes that were a credit to the chef.

For main course we opted for fish. For me, pan-seared seabass fillet with English pea ravioli, crab and fennel tuille, samphire, pine nuts and chive butter. Karen chose halibut with Morecambe Bay shrimps on toast, chervil, garlic butter, Jersey Royals and champagne butter. The fish was cooked to perfection in both dishes and the flavour combinations sensational!

was served with Valrhona parfait. To add balance, we also shared an equally delicious dessert of macerated strawberries with pannacotta, Pernod, pistachio and basil. As with the starters and mains, they were a feast for the eyes and the senses, with multiple flavours working in perfect harmony.

My friend Karen and I visited on a beautiful summer’s evening and started with cocktails while we perused the menus – a Pornstar martini for me (quite possibly the best I’ve had) and a classic Aperol spritz for Karen. Our server, Ellie, presented us with three menus – a la carte, an AA Rosette experience and the ‘two for £30’ which runs on a Thursday evening.

The choice is fantastic with something for all tastes. The two for £30 menu with half a bottle of wine offers incredible value with many of the restaurant’s favourite dishes included such as duck pancakes and bang bang prawns to start and Bertram’s fish and chips and a connoisseur burger for mains. We couldn’t resist the celebratory AA Rosette menu and

As the sun sets and the lights dim, the restaurant comes alive with a relaxed yet refined ambience. It really is a special setting. Completing the AA Rosette menu, our waitress suggests a chocolate and clementine baked Alaska which was a real showstopper! Flamed with Cointreau at the table, the dish

The whole front of house team made us feel very welcome throughout the evening and we couldn’t praise the level of service enough. If you haven’t been to Bertram’s before or haven’t visited for a while then you must –the location, service and delightful food makes this is a truly special experience. n

ENCOUNTER PRESTON’S ARTS FESTIVAL

A three-day arts festival returns to Preston this September featuring a host of performance artists, workshops and participatory activities. Alma Stewart chats to the executive producer Esther Ferry Kennington to find out more

Encounter Festival is an authentic voice for Lancashire and the North West, celebrating the breadth of the county’s diverse cultural offer with high quality and high profile arts. It sees the city of Preston buzzing with life and alight with creativity. The past Encounters have seen an array of spectacular performances, inspiring arts and impressive music, bringing spectators to their feet.

Esther has been the executive producer

for the Festival since 2019, to offer the city an exciting weekend of performance to fill a void between the Preston Guilds, held every 20 years. To recognise the potential of the

Earlier this year, it was announced that Esther was commissioned once more to deliver this year’s events: “I’m so pleased to be given the opportunity to build on the programme and relationships developed so far for Preston through Encounter Festival. I hope our Torchlight Procession goes from strength to strength as we get closer to the next Guild in 2032, bringing together all of Preston’s communities for one almighty celebration!” she said.

event to grow and impact the communities, artists and arts organisations of Lancashire, as well as attract visitors into the county, it was agreed the event should be a bi-annual cultural festival. But more recently it has become an annual event.

Esther is also the creative development director for Horse + Bamboo, an arts organisation and charity, based in Waterfoot. With a 90-seat venue, café/bar, rehearsal, workshop, meeting rooms and large store of H+B’s extensive visual theatre archive, the organisation use masks and puppetry to create inclusive, thought provoking, challenging theatre for adults and children.

“An eclectic work history led me through casinos as a croupier and training officer to

Oxfam as a retail manager. I started with Horse + Bamboo as a company administrator in 2007 and have developed my skills to suit the needs of the company and the interests I hold. I completed an MA in Arts Management from Manchester University in December 2012. I now lead on development of many of our creative projects including the Creation Centre, Baby Boo and Making a Change. We aim to ensure that future generations enjoy, learn and contribute to our rich cultural heritage by sharing our expertise with emerging artists, companies and our diverse community, which is the basis too for the Encounter Festival.”

THE

FESTIVAL PROMISES TO BE ANOTHER CELEBRATION OF CREATIVE ARTS IN MANY FORMS

The primary objective of the Encounter Festival executive producer is to deliver Encounter’s vision while promoting a culture that upholds the highest standards of performance, inclusivity, and transparency. This includes fostering an environment that nurtures artists, supports the professional development of the festival team, and positions Encounter as a must-see cultural destination.

The executive producer will chair the Festival Steering Group, providing external support and guidance. Esther leads the artistic programming and production, designing and delivering captivating experiences such as the annual community Torchlight Procession. This year’s programme is packed full of captivating performances and promises to be an unforgettable experience for attendees of all ages.

Esther said: “Opening Encounter Festival this year will be ‘The Lighter Jams’ bringing a mix of soul, pop, rock and reggae to Preston over at the Mobile Event Tent (MET) at Preston’s University Square. The festival will once again feature the Torchlight Procession, a highlight of the festival, brings together hundreds of participants from community groups, local bands, dancers, and troupes such as the Preston City Mela and Carnival groups. Their vibrant performances light up the streets of Preston, creating a mesmerising spectacle that captivates both participants and onlookers.”

On Saturday, festival-goers can enjoy free outdoor theatre shows at the Preston Bus Station and The Flag Market. Additionally, the Community and Traditions Stage, located outside The Guild Hall Preston, will be celebrating with an array of captivating

performances. Over at the MET, join in ticketed dance workshops, with Dance Syndrome, Jazz Swing Dance and Swati Dance Company and finish with Preston Beats Drum Circle. The evening will culminate in the festival’s signature Torchlight Procession starting from Moor Park at 7:15pm and finishing outside The Guild Hall, Preston at 8:30pm where music and dancing will fill the streets and lead participants into the vibrant city centre.

Sunday will bring a family-oriented day of fun and food at Winckley Square. The

highlight of the day will be the beautiful show ‘Parade’, which will roll along Fishergate, creating a stunning spectacle to captivate all. Attendees are also encouraged to visit the Creative Scrap Store at the Bus Station, where they can unleash their creativity in various workshops using found and scrap materials.

OUR TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH AS WE GET CLOSER TO THE NEXT GUILD IN 2032, BRINGING TOGETHER ALL OF PRESTON’S COMMUNITIES FOR ONE ALMIGHTY CELEBRATION!

“The festival promises to be another celebration of creative arts in many forms. We have an incredible team that works hard to be able to deliver the programme and I would also like to express my gratitude to Without Walls for their generous support with their contributions which have further enriched the festival’s programme and promise to delight audiences.

“I’m really looking forward to enjoying the various shows and activities and hope to see visitors enjoying and participating in all the wonderful things Encounter has to offer.” n

GOOD READ

Lauren Molyneux reviews a novel that opens well but loses its way as the chapters unfold

A TERRIBLE KINDNESS

Jo Browning Wroe

It’s 1966 and William Lavery, the youngest and brightest embalmer in the UK, is at a formal dinner, about to receive an accolade from the president of the institution. With his dream girl on his arm and his uncle there in support, it’s set to be a night of celebration marking William’s incredible achievements.

Then the telegram arrives. In one breath, he is the main topic of conversation. In the next, all anyone can think about are the hundreds of bodies buried at Aberfan, where a collapsed colliery spoil tip has slid down a mountainside and engulfed Pantglas Junior School.  With the death toll expected to be high, they need embalmers, and they need them quickly. William is the first to volunteer.

The opening chapters of Jo Browning Wroe’s debut novel are heavy and powerful. As William works tirelessly through the night, encountering mass death through disaster for the first time, consoling parents and taking care of the bodies that continue to be pulled from the wreckage, we’re given new insight into the impact such an event can have on those indirectly involved and forced to see the tragedy from the eyes of the young embalmer. Browning Wroe’s prose is sensitive, engaging and, at times, tear-jerking.

However, the novel’s emotive opening soon gives way to an extended reflection on some of the major (and not-so-major) events that have happened in William’s life up until this point –presumably triggered by his experience in Aberfan. What we anticipate to be a well-written, albeit fictional, account shedding light on the impact of the Aberfan disaster from an entirely new perspective, quickly becomes a weak coming-of-age tale about a protagonist who, it seems, has been determined his whole life to sabotage his own happiness and put barriers in his own way. This fact doesn’t necessarily make William unlikeable, but it does create a dissonance between protagonist and reader, with the end result being, in my case, utter indifference.

As we jump between William’s years in the Cambridge choir as a childhood protégé and his subsequent years as an equally talented embalmer, through his studies in London, we’re drip-fed some key information – namely that his father has passed away and his relationship with his mother, though once very close, has since become estranged. As each chapter unfolds, we’re primed to anticipate a big reveal at some point – the ‘something’ that must have happened to cause a rift in his relationship with his mother and see his career trajectory shift from world-class vocalist to the best embalmer in the family business – and it is this ‘something’ that keeps us reading. It all comes to a head in what is a very predictable and frustratingly anti-climactic scene.

A Terrible Kindness starts with promise as an entirely new perspective on one of the most famous and tragic disasters in recent UK history, but soon descends into a tenuous, disengaging coming-of-age tale about a character who, though apparently on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, never actually achieves any personal growth. The powerful opening chapters are well-written, emotional and hard-hitting – after this point, the story seems to be about anything else and I can’t help but feel that framing the narrative in the context of Aberfan may have been a shameless ploy to draw readers in, in the first place. n

Established more than 35 years ago and located around the corner from Burnley Football Club, the theatre school prides itself on providing a professional yet family-like environment where its young student performers are educated and inspired to deliver musical theatre performances to the standard the professionals would be proud of.

Many past students have gone on to enjoy successful careers on the West End and perform in professional shows worldwide. The school draws students from all over Lancashire and Greater Manchester

and provides age and ability-appropriate classes, with each being carefully structured to achieve the perfect balance between learning and fun. Students can begin their training at age four, as soon as they start school and continue with their training until they are 18. From here, they invariably progress to London’s top vocationalstage schools and then on to perform professionally.

OUR AUDIENCES ARE BLOWN AWAY EVERY YEAR BY THE STANDARD OF OUR SHOWS

When we caught up with Andy Cooke, the school’s principal, it was clear just how much this is a passion of his: “Of course, these young students learn singing, dancing and acting skills but in reality, they learn so much more. A happy by-product of the work we do with these young people is the level of confidence they build. The classes encourage personal development and forge transferrable life skills.”

Having seen the standard of the shows they produce, it’s obvious that they’ve had every opportunity to hone their skills.

Andy added: “Our shows cost upwards of £35,000 to produce. Our audiences are blown away every year by the standard of our shows. Newcomers cite that they rival any show they’ve seen in professional theatre. That’s exactly what we strive for. Only our ticket prices are a fraction of the cost, hence why we have such a following.”

Basics’ upcoming annual show, The Addams Family, will be taking to the Pendle Hippodrome stage in Colne, Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th October 2023 and tickets start at just £14.
