SNAPPERS TO THE STARS Blackpool twins David and Darren Nelson are a dynamic duo when it comes to capturing images of the world’s most famous people. Here, Alma Stewart finds out more about their glamourous career including working with BBC hit show Strictly Come Dancing. Photography: David and Darren Nelson

T

here can’t be many people who can say they have been in the company of some of the most famous artists on the planet, but identical twins Dave and Darren can. For more than two decades, they have attended the most seminal events to capture photographs of the stars. The pair, who attended Warbreck High School in Bispham, have enjoyed a varied and interesting career. Both were nightclub DJs achieving a run of 17 consecutive years on Blackpool’s Golden Mile. As twins, they have been invited on to a number of TV shows such as Supermarket Sweep, This Morning and Vanessa, so they are no strangers to the showbiz world. But the glittering photography

career started with more humble beginnings. Dave said: “Once I left school, I got on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) at Dixon’s camera shop. I got to learn all about how cameras worked and started taking pictures of some of the concerts in Blackpool which at the time, were plentiful. I would then post the negatives through the door of the town’s newspaper, The Blackpool Gazette and eventually ended up working for them two days a week. I would also loan a video camera from the shop and film weddings at the Winter Gardens, a bit of a first at the time.” With a passionate interest in lighting, Dave found himself organising the lights as a ‘Light Jockey’ at the Sands nightclub. A member of the Territorial Army, Darren covered his shift while Dave was away on duties. The pair were both in the club one day when the resident DJ walked out and so the twins were told to go and buy some records and host the evening – they never looked back. Darren said: “We invented games where men were the butt of the joke instead of the women which proved really popular. The Sands residency opened the doors to other venues, guest slots and even work on an entertainment cruise ship featuring all of the top acts of the day.” They went on to DJ at Shades, Jellies, Sequins and the Yellow Submarine, Darren going solo at the Flagship Bar and Preston’s Fives.

13

Darren also pursued a career in stand-up comedy and created stand-up alternative comedy club at Blues in St Annes – the first of its kind on the Fylde Coast – with the pre-fame headliner John Bishop who Darren had met in a heat of Comedian of The Year. He is a Guinness World Record holder as part of a total of 102 stand-up comedians who appeared at the Comedy Balloon event held at the Dancehouse, Manchester, in October 2001. Darren was also a finalist in ITV’s comedy competition, Take the Mic. Now he is the go-to photographer for local stage school and talent agency, Scream Theatre Schools.

TWENTY YEARS AGO I GOT TO KNOW THE ARTISTS PARTICULARLY AS THERE WERE ONLY A SMALL NUMBER OF THEM OUTSIDE OF LONDON Dave, while working at Jellies, started to send prints off the News of The World’s weekend ‘party pics’ section. Being in Blackpool, a number of stars would appear at various places, so Dave persuaded them to pose in an entertaining way which was different than the usual posed shots. Through a local charity event, Dave’s photos ended up in OK magazine and from there, Dave was the photographer of choice for events and built-up friendly relationships with picture editors all over the UK. He said: “Twenty years ago I got to know the artists particularly as there were only a small number of them outside of London. I knew Girls Aloud really well for example and went on to photograph the likes of Liberty X,

14

localfocus

Ed Sheeran, Adele and Ellie Goulding before they were famous.” As work grew, Dave found he couldn’t be in two places at once and so Darren was brought in to help. Together they cover a full year of events which started with the Radio 1 Roadshow and includes Glastonbury, the RTS Awards, BAFTA awards, NTA Awards, Inside Soap Awards, World Music Awards,

WE WERE HONOURED TO BE ASKED TO PHOTOGRAPH ABBA LIVE ON STAGE AT VOYAGE, THEIR SHOW IN LONDON the VE Day concert and The Brits. During these events they have captured all the big stars – Kylie Minogue, Prince, Amy Winehouse and Dave even captured the last photo of Michael Jackson’s last stage performance. Dave, and sometimes Darren, would cover all the OK magazine parties in and outside of London for 21 years. Dave added: “We were honoured to be asked

to photograph ABBA live on stage at Voyage, their show in London. It could possibly be their final appearance on stage together.” Of course, the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing show will be televised live from Blackpool’s iconic Tower ballroom this month. When the show started in 2004, Dave photographed the show in the studio. Now the show is so huge, the BBC have taken on the role of the publicity, but Dave still manages to snap the cast when they are in Blackpool and also when they take the show on tour. Dave said: “As I have been involved in the show from the beginning, it’s a real pleasure to be still involved, particularly when they visit Blackpool. Everyone involved are so nice and it’s a great highlight of the year to meet up with them all again.” So what has changed over the 20 years they have been capturing images? “It’s all immediate now.” Darren said: “Dave sends the photos from camera to computer and I quickly check them and send straight to the picture desks of the newspapers and magazines. Before digital technology, photos would need to be processed before you could

see the full detail but now the image is there straightaway. There is no time to get it wrong.”

THERE AREN’T MANY PEOPLE WE HAVEN’T PHOTOGRAPHED AND WE’VE HAD SOME FANTASTIC EXPERIENCES ALL OVER THE WORLD Dave concluded: “It’s really important to be known by your peers in this industry – there are only a small number of people doing what we do and you don’t see many new faces. Darren and I have built up a reputation for getting it right every time. We take time to talk to people and build rapport and I think that has stood us in good stead. We have met some wonderful people – simply too many great people we have met from stage screen and music to name but one. There aren’t many people we haven’t photographed and we’ve had some fantastic experiences all over the world. Long may it continue!” n

TAKING THE INSIDE OUT Bedrock Landscapes has achieved recommended installer status at Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies

F

or over 34 years, Bedrock Landscapes Ltd has become renowned and respected for completing a comprehensive portfolio of over 2,300 high-quality bespoke building and landscaping projects throughout the Ribble Valley, Preston and Fylde areas. Boasting a full design and installation service team, Bedrock Landscapes Ltd specialise in maximising your garden’s potential by extending and evolving your outside living areas with decking, patios, garden rooms, outdoor working kitchens and sophisticated entertaining areas. A noticeable reoccurring design feature

of Bedrock’s outdoor portfolio is the use of natural stone and eco-friendly materials. Jason Gooch, Bedrock’s Managing Director

HOMEOWNERS ARE DEFINITELY INVESTING FAR MORE INTO CREATING BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR SPACES SO THAT THEY CAN SPEND MUCH MORE TIME ENTERTAINING GUESTS explains: “Over the years we have learnt that the art of good design is achieving a delicate balance between nature and hard form.

“We treat every project holistically, taking into account lifestyle requirements and style preferences as much as composition, planting, textures and tones. Where possible we integrate climate conscious and ecofriendly solutions that enhance rather than compromise the overall look and feel of our customers outdoor living space.” Indeed, the outdoor kitchen and adjoining entertainment area has become one of Bedrock’s more popular requests from Ribble Valley and Fylde homeowners: “Since Covid, homeowners in the Ribble Valley and across the North West are definitely investing far more into creating beautiful outdoor spaces so that they can spend much more time entertaining guests and family in their outdoor areas,” says Jason.

homesinsideout

“With the opportunity to prepare and indulge in food entirely from the comfort of your garden, summer entertaining suddenly becomes hassle-free. Homeowners with a lengthy walk from their kitchen to outdoor dining area will particularly benefit. When herbaceous borders die back over the winter, many gardens suffer from a lack of structure until spring. Installing an outdoor kitchen offers aesthetic appeal as well as culinary, by giving your garden an additional element of structure. Predominantly architectural rather than planted, it will still maintain interest over the winter months. The addition of patio heaters and lanterns can even keep this space comfortable for use on dry days outside of summer too.”

THE ADDITION OF PATIO HEATERS AND LANTERNS CAN EVEN KEEP THIS SPACE COMFORTABLE FOR USE ON DRY DAYS OUTSIDE OF SUMMER TOO Whilst Bedrock Landscape’s team has grown significantly in size since its beginnings in the 1980s, Managing Director Jason insists on offering Bedrock’s customers a first-rate personal service by staying directly involved in the design phase and fulfilment aspects of every project. Jason affirms: “Whether it is a larger building or landscaping project involving an outdoor kitchen, or simply a smaller garden patio design, I insist on being involved to ensure that the reputation we have built over 30 years for quality and professionalism, is delivered and maintained. I have always believed that a customer’s outside space is as important and integral to their home as any other room. We approach every project knowing an outdoor area will help enrich their lives for years to come.” In recognition of Bedrock Landscape’s years of consistently delivering beautiful

landscaping and building projects throughout the region, Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies, has added Bedrock Landscapes Ltd to their recommended installers list. Jon C Hollywood, CEO of Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies, adds: “As the North West’s largest single-source trade supplier of landscaping materials and plants, we are thrilled to be able to add Bedrock Landscapes Ltd to our preferred list of recommended installers. Bedrock’s comprehensive building and landscaping portfolio truly speaks for itself, and their 30-year reputation for delivering a consistent level of high-quality workmanship means they are perfect to join our recommended installers list.” Jason enthuses: “We are really pleased to

21

feature on Bannister Hall’s recommended landscaping installer list as we know their criteria for recommendation is very high. As a long-term supplier of ours, we have found Bannister Hall Landscaping to be highly convenient and efficient. They literally stock everything we need for our landscaping and building projects under one roof. some pocket money and I enjoyed interacting with the customers, often enjoying a bit of banter. One day a lunching lady asked me why I was working in a café and said I should work for her instead. Next thing I knew, I was working at Top Man part-time, which then turned to full-time and before long I had the position of the lady who asked me to work for her!”

For more than 16 years, Paula Baxter has been providing loyal customers with a one stop shop for all interior designs, furniture and styling needs. Pad Contemporary Living Ltd in Poulton provides the full customer service from idea to completion as Alma Stewart discovers. Photography: Michael Porter

W

ith its bright orange logo, Pad certainly offers an intriguing welcome. The two-storey showroom is awash with sofas, chairs, artwork, fabric samples, lamps beds and wardrobes, in fact, everything you would need to dress your living room, dining room and bedroom. One thing you will always find here is a warm welcome from its owner. Paula has been delighted to serve her many customers here since 2007 and the business has grown and ranges expanded ever since. But her current career in interiors started from a completely different industry, though a most useful one as it turns out. Paula said: “At school I was always good at the sciences so I thought I would go into a related career. When I was 14, I worked as a waitress to earn

BY KEEPING MY PRICES LOWER, MY CUSTOMERS KNOW THAT THEY ARE ALWAYS GETTING VALUE FOR MONEY Men’s fashion became Paula’s focus: “I really enjoyed merchandising and advising customers how to put a complete look together – ties, shirt, waistcoat, trousers. It was exciting to let them try different looks and go home happy with their purchase, knowing they looked amazing in the clothes. To me a high standard of customer service is what it’s all about,” she said. Paula went on to enjoy more senior positions at River Island and JJB before

becoming a retail training assessor for seven years, supporting all levels of study from Warehouse Level One qualifications right up to management training. “As a perfectionist, hard worker and high achiever, from a young age I knew I wanted to be my own boss so after leaving school I studied business and finance at Blackpool and Fylde College. This training, as well as working in large organisations, has helped Paula achieve her dream.

Paula went along to the UK’s furniture shows and realised she could create something special in Poulton. While setting up the business Paula had a conversation with the managing director of a local building firm. Months later she persuaded him to let her dress a show home on the new housing development in Thornton back in 2008. After achieving a great look, she worked alongside the MD for many years. One time Paula created a stunning show home in Scorton

when buyers saw it on the opening weekend, they bought it including all the furniture. She knew she was on the right path. And now they are happily married!

I CREATE MOOD BOARDS AND HAVE SAMPLES OF FABRICS AND CARPETS SO WE CAN CREATE THE PERFECT LOOK IN THE PERFECT COLOURS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ANY EXISTING DÉCOR What makes Pad different from other retailers is the full service and the prices. Paula doesn’t create discount sales, preferring instead to sell items every time discounted below the recommended retail price. She explained: “There is nothing worse than say buying a sofa for Christmas only to find it £500 cheaper in January. By keeping prices lower, my customers know that they are always getting value for money. For example, I have a marbled tempered glass dining table that won’t scratch or stain for less than £300 with a large selection of chairs that will complement it. My most popular king size bed frame and mattress with gel top comes in at under £1500 with free delivery. I also have a range of stylish Nolte wardrobes and Nolte’s team will come and build the

29

wardrobes in a home.” And what really stands out is Paula’s attention to detail and commitment to exceptional customer service rooted in years working in retail. With an army of tradespeople at her disposal, Paula can help her customer put together a whole room. She added: “I create mood boards in the showroom and have samples of fabrics and wallpaper so we can create the perfect look using colours to complement their existing décor. One customer asked how she could hide a fireplace without ripping it all out. I designed her a media wall to cover the fireplace and my lovely joiner installed it. They were over the moon.”

So if you are looking to upgrade, redesign or start from scratch, you won’t go wrong at Pad’s showroom, plus there’s plenty of space for parking at the front of the store. Paula concluded: “I love to meet new people and I love to help wherever I can. My customers are fantastic and come back again and again, often with friends and family, because they know I will do my very best for them. I enjoy providing the right products at the right price with the right quality. I just love what I do!” n

For those wanting a combination of wood burner and cooker in one, there’s ESSE’s much-loved Ironheart, which is designed to bring warmth and culinary delights into your home. Originally launched to celebrate ESSE’s 150th anniversary, the Ironheart has been updated to meet EcoDesign requirements, making it more eco-friendly and efficient than ever.

ESSE COOKERS ARE SUPER-EFFICIENT SO THEY ARE ECONOMICAL TO RUN

A TIMELESS CLASSIC Ultimately efficient, Lancashire-made ESSE cookers are favoured by professional chefs and home cooks across the UK

ach classic ESSE cooker has its own character, but all share the same timeless elegance and impeccable engineering, which you’ll sense the second you open one of the hand-built, cast iron doors. Super-efficient, there’s an ESSE range cooker to suit you and your kitchen. In a collection of striking vitreous enamel colours, ESSE ovens are a favourite with professional chefs. Electric or wood-fired, ESSE is an industry leader when it comes to range cookers: “ESSE cookers are super-efficient,” says expert Nick Astley of Fuelmizas, one of the Ribble Valley’s top retailers of ESSE wood burning stoves and cookers. “And, because they are so efficient, they are economical to run.” ESSE has been at the forefront of heating and cooking innovation in Britain since 1854. Today, their cooking products remain some of the cleanest-burning and most efficient appliances.

Beautifully hand-crafted at ESSE’s Ouzledale Foundry in Barnoldwick, Lancashire, ESSE cookers are the British-built models of choice of TV chef Hugh Fearnley Wittingstall at River Cottage and presenter Kate Humble of Humble by Nature. JEWEL IN WINTER’S CROWN Your garden gives up some beautiful gifts of its own at this time of year – allowing you to bring the outside into the home with foliage and ‘green’ decorations

that provide a buffet for birds. Their leaves range from bold and glossy to tiny and fine-textured, and from smooth to spiny with numerous colourful variegations. They are true garden all-rounders, offering a combination of structure, dazzling seasonal fruit displays and excellent evergreen foliage.

B

y using your garden as a resource you can create some simple, yet beautiful decorative displays for the Christmas festivities – giving your home a more natural look while remaining festive, stylish and environmentally friendly. So thrifty tip of the month is to bring nature into your home this Christmas. A great use for your winter prunings is to arrange bare or lichen-covered twigs in a tall glass vase and festoon lights, or simply use lengths of trailing ivy and evergreen foliage such as holly twisted into swags for looping along mantelpieces or winding round banisters. Sprigs of aromatic leaves and herbs – bay, rosemary, sage, thyme and anything else you can lay your hands on – arranged around a large candle in a deep fluted dish makes a fragrant table centre piece. Hollies take centre stage this month as they really are the jewel in the winter’s crown. Aside from their value as evergreen plants, they have stunning seasonal berry displays

with vibrant pink fruits that split to reveal bright orange seeds that are loved by birds, mice and foxes – but beware, the leaves and fruits are toxic to humans. Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) which has small orange-red berries from August to January that are popular with many types of birds and safe for people to eat but have a sour taste. Juniper (Juniperus communis) an evergreen with fragrant needle-like leaves and purple-black berries are a favourite with birds and are also good for flavouring gin and sauces. n

RHS SEASONAL GARDEN CHECKLIST HOLLIES TAKE CENTRE STAGE THIS MONTH AS THEY REALLY ARE THE JEWEL IN THE WINTER’S CROWN Other berry producing plants also come into their own during the winter months. These energy rich offerings provide important nourishment for birds, mammals and insects. They also give borders colour and interest at a time when many plants are dying back. Whether you have them in your garden, or love a woodland walk, some of the winter berries to spot through the colder months include spindle (Euonymous europaeas)

• Take hardwood cuttings

• Prune deciduous shrubs

• Prune apple and pear trees

• Leave parsnips in the ground until needed, they taste sweeter after a frost • Start forcing rhubarb either in the greenhouse or outdoors • Trees and shrubs can still be planted outside

• Reduce watering of houseplants

• Plan your planting and crops for next year • Make eco-friendly choices by selecting disease resistant fruit trees or roses to reduce use of chemicals in the garden

A STUNNING SHOWCASE

Designer to the stars Martyn Lawrence Bullard, takes you inside celebrity homes in his new book Star Style Interiors, that features a collection of sensational, eclectic spaces

W

ith a foreword by Cher, Star Style Interiors details Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s broad–ranging, sophisticated design style, which is sought the world over and has won him unrivalled acclaim among a huge range of A–list clients, including Cher, the Kardashians, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Ellen Pompeo.

This stunning book showcases Bullard’s trademark ‘star style’ from Hollywood glamour and unabashed Pop Art to Moroccan–inspired exoticism and sumptuously cool serenity. First turning the lens on Bullard’s own properties in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, Star Style Interiors goes on to peek inside the homes of an array of glitterati from the worlds of music, fashion, stage and screen, as well as some of Bullard’s most luxurious commissions for private homes and boutique hotels. Step inside Kylie Jenner’s kaleidoscopic hidden hills hideaway, Cher’s Malibu mansion, the modernist Mexican Casa El Faro all featuring Bullard’s own range of textile designs, homewares and jewellery as the backdrop to his strikingly bold interiors. Bullard is a multi–award winning, Los Angeles–based interior designer renowned for his broad range of styles. He is a popular television personality and his work has been featured in leading publications worldwide, including Architectural Digest, Vogue, House

& Garden, ELLE Decor, House Beautiful and the Los Angeles Times. When not travelling, he divides his time between his romantic Hollywood Hills retreat and his mid–century masterpiece in the southern California desert. A world-class talent, Bullard is notably the longest standing interior designer on the Top 100 list worldwide and the most prolific award-winning designer in the US.

HIS IMPRESSIVE MASTERY OF A BROAD RANGE OF STYLES, PAIRED WITH HIS UNRIVALLED ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND COMMITMENT TO QUALITY, HAS EARNED HIM INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM

39

He is known for his trademark glamour and flair for the exotic as he curates interiors that are ultimately beautiful. Beyond his exquisite residential portfolio, he has also overseen the design of several premier hospitality properties around the world including the iconic Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs, Chateau Gütsch in Lucerne, Switzerland and chef Rick Bayless’s flagship Red O restaurant.

His impressive mastery of interior design, paired with his unrivalled attention to detail and commitment to quality, has earned him significant international acclaim. Introducing the book, he says: “I have always loved houses with history. It seems to have been part of my attraction to all the homes I’ve owned over the years. My latest LA house is no exception.” Buller’s LA house has been home to such luminaries as Andy Warhol and Tina Turner but it was most famously owned by Dennis Hopper during the 1960s. He and his wife Brooke Hayward welcomed within its walls the most interesting Hollywood set of the day, from movie stars to artists — all of which he photographed and documented in his various art books. Bullard adds: “Honouring such an illustrious and artistic history was an important part of my approach to decorating the house. But, before I get to that, there’s a twist to this tale. “Amazingly, I had already decorated the house 20 years prior—for the then host of The Late Late Show, Craig Kilborn.

“At the time I could only have dreamed of owning a house like this in the Hollywood Hills. I was amazed the day that I saw this house pop up on my cell phone feed as being for sale, and my heart leapt as I began to imagine that I could now own it. I plucked

it from the listings before it even went on the open market. “One year later, with an extension, new kitchen and bathrooms, a bar, a screening room and lush landscaping, the house became my new home. “For the decor I decided to banish the Spanish style I had previously designed for Craig, instead adding a Moorish energy— using Zellij tilework, Italian marble, carved doors, geometric tiles, Moucharabieh carved panels for the kitchen and bar cabinetry and a hand-painted, monochromatic Marrakesh-style barrel-vaulted ceiling in the living room. “To mix it up and capture some of my current ever-evolving passions I added a hearty quantity of mid-century vibe lighting, 1950s sofas, 1970s chairs, tribal rugs, Pop Art as a nod to Andy Warhol’s tenure and an edited selection from my collection of photography.” n

KEEPING YOUR HOME SAFE THIS WINTER Now the nights turn dark earlier in the winter days, our thoughts turn to making sure our homes are safer with enhanced security. Your doors, windows and lighting are important considerations to ensure you maximise safety

I

f you are leaving your house early or returning when it is dark, there are a few lighting options to consider. As properties are engulfed in longer periods of darkness, lighting is crucial. There are many options on the market… Motion sensor lights will turn on when movement is detected. Different motion sensor security lights will have various read ranges and wider or narrower fields of view, so these are things to look out for. Solar powered lights can be powered even on cloudier or darker days which makes them useful throughout the year. Many have long life batteries and of course, need no wiring. Timed security lights offer the option of switching on for a set period so can be on all night for a six-to-eight-hour period, though neighbours may need to be considered. Mains security lights are wired to your home’s electricity. Additional power consumption needs to be considered, but you can often customise these lights more and have stronger bulbs in them.

Hybrid security lights are a combination of features. These lights could be timed, solar powered, through the mains, motion sensored or a mix of them. They will often cover the best aspects of each of the different types they are a hybrid of.

ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR ENTIRE HOME MORE BURGLAR-PROOF IS SECURING YOUR EXTERNAL DOORS AND WINDOWS One of the most effective ways to make your entire home more burglar-proof is securing your external doors and windows. Again, there are many options on the market with a host of security features and come in a wide variety of materials including wood, uPVC, aluminium and steel. Doors and windows are always going to be the most vulnerable entry points around the property, and it is important that you

conduct regular inspection to test whether you need to upgrade the windows, doors, and any locks to make them stronger and harder to break. Replacing old external doors and windows can not only enhance security but also save you money on heating costs by helping to increase your home’s thermal efficiency. Made of metal, aluminium and steel doors and windows naturally have more strength, are durable and resistant to corrosion which ensures longevity. When it comes to security, many elements contribute to a window frame’s ability to resist break-ins. When combined with quality glazing and hardware, aluminium and steel windows and doors are secure. Solid and strong, aluminium and steel are metals that are difficult to damage. Composite doors are made up of several different materials. All have a reinforced frame core with a thermally efficient layer, meaning they’re strong and efficient and can come with a multi-point locking system. Similarly, uPVC doors and windows are low maintenance and can come with a choice of locking systems. Traditional wood doors, often kept in place as a period feature are long lasting and sturdy. With maintenance they can last a long time. A variety of locks can be fitted fairly easily to add extra security. n

SPARKLE AND SHINE

T

he holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time to turn up the glamour and embrace the festive spirit. When it comes to festive fashion, one trend that never fails to make a dazzling statement is sequins and sparkles. These shimmering embellishments are a guaranteed way to add a touch of magic to any outfit. Sequins have been a staple in festive fashion for decades and their timeless appeal continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts.

In this latest fashion column, fashion historian Scott William Schiavone takes a look at the Christmas cue to wear all that glitters…

The word ‘sequin’ originates from the Arabic word ‘sikka’ meaning ‘coin’. Sequins date back as far as the ancient Egyptians. When King Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered in 1922, gold sequin like disks were found sewn onto the Egyptian royal’s garments. In the 1920s, western fashion quickly reflected the dazzling artifacts in King Tut’s tomb.

Young women, known as ‘Bright Young Things’ wore dresses for dancing the Charleston that were embellished with hundreds of sequins. The beauty of sequins lies in their ability to catch and reflect light, creating a mesmerising play of sparkle.

REMEMBER THAT THE KEY TO MASTERING THE ART OF SEQUINS IS TO LET THEM TAKE CENTRE STAGE A dress from the collection at The Harris Museum in Preston is covered in ice blue coloured sequins. The style is typical of the 1920s with its short length, simple shape and plain neckline. This dress was worn at the 1922 Preston Guild ball and would certainly have sparkled on the dance floor.

Whether you’re attending a ball, a family gathering, an office party or a New Year’s Eve bash, sequins are the perfect choice to make a bold statement. For a classic and elegant approach, a sequined cocktail dress in rich colours like red, green or blue will make you look and feel amazing. Pair your sequined dress with timeless accessories like a clutch bag and high heel to complete the ensemble. If you prefer a more versatile look, incorporate sequins into your outfit through statement pieces such as a sequined blazer worn over a simple black dress or paired with tailored trousers. This will transform your look from ordinary to extraordinary.

If, like me, you like to experiment with textures and patterns, mix sequins with other fabrics like velvet or silk to create a

WHETHER YOU CHOOSE A FULL-ON SEQUINED DRESS, A STATEMENT BLAZER, OR A MIX OF TEXTURES, LET YOUR FESTIVE SPIRIT SHINE THROUGH YOUR FASHION CHOICES luxurious and dimensional look that is both stylish and sophisticated. Remember that the key to mastering the art of sequins

is to let them take centre stage. Keep the rest of your accessories relatively understated to allow the shimmering embellishments to shine. From ancient opulence to contemporary chic, sequins have woven a sparkling thread through the tapestry of fashion history. Whether you choose a full-on sequined dress, a statement blazer, or a mix of textures, let your festive spirit shine through your fashion choices. So, this festive season, embrace the magic of sequins and sparkles and step into a fashion wonderland, where every ensemble tells a story, and every accessory sparkles with the spirit of celebration! n Scott William Schiavone is a fashion historian and Curator of Decorative Art at The Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston. IT’S OFTEN MUCH EASIER TO CARRY OUT RESTORATION WORK ON MULTIPLE TEETH RATHER THAN REPLACING A SINGLE TOOTH, WHICH CAN BE MORE OF A CHALLENGE Riaz, Ursula was told that a dental bridge was not the ideal solution as it would have affected the two healthy teeth either side. “Usman was fantastic,” recalls Ursula. “He really put me at ease. It was a big deal for me, as I was really concerned about how

CONFIDENCE RESTORED

A

A team of specialists at Renovo Dental have restored Ursula Rosimus’ smile as well as her confidence

first responder working in the care sector, Ursula Rosimus had always been conscious about her teeth, having had a crown fitted many years ago. Just before the pandemic in 2020, she began to develop problems around the crown, as she explains: “I had an abscess and when I consulted a dentist, I was told a front tooth would have to be removed.” Removing the top left front tooth resulted in an unsightly gap, so Ursula was advised to have a single tooth denture fitted, which was unbearable: “It was awful, but I knew I just had to get used to it. I was very selfconscious about it but there was nothing I could do as we were in the middle of Covid.” When Ursula eventually managed to get an appointment with an NHS dentist, they suggested a bridge be fitted, which would replace the uncomfortable denture: “I felt very rushed. I didn’t know what to do so my husband suggested I speak with Dr Usman at Renovo Dental.” During her consultation with Dr Usman

the issue could be resolved.” Dr Usman, a highly experienced clinician with a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Ursula, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said there was significant bone loss at the site of the

health&beauty missing tooth, he said a dental implant was certainly possible.” Working alongside Usman on Ursula’s dentistry, was highly experienced periodontist and implant surgeon Dr Khurrum Hussain, who completed training in periodontology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute. Dr Usman explains: “Ursula was missing a tooth in the aesthetic zone. She was struggling with a loose-fitting temporary denture and it really affected her confidence. She just couldn’t smile. “During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Ursula didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.” The next step was a consultation with specialist periodontist Dr Khurrum, who deals with degenerative bone issues and gum profiling. He carried out the bone graft as Ursula explains: “Where the crown had been I had very little bone – I had far less than the average person.”

A bone graft helps prevent tooth loss by holding your tooth in place. It also serves as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. The technique also involves applying tissuestimulating proteins, which are the same proteins found in developing tooth enamel, which encourage the growth of healthy bone and tissue. “There is often a general lack of awareness of what can be done in terms of the latest techniques, treatments and technology. Too often patients are told that the treatment for gum disease and bone loss is not possible. Yes, it is more complex, impossible it is not. That depends on the skillset of the team

my teeth and I explained all the problems I had and told them about Renovo and the implant – she couldn’t believe it as it looked so natural!” Her treatment at Renovo has now given Ursula the confidence to wear aligners to straighten her bottom teeth: “It’s been quite a journey but it’s all been worth it. The implant has made things so much easier. “I am so glad I made the decision to go to Renovo Dental, I can’t fault them, they have all been brilliant. I have to say, it’s been a good investment. I like smiling now!”

carrying out the treatment,” explains Dr Khurrum. “Our aim is always to get gum tissue and bone strong and health before we carry out further work. The foundations have to be strong.” As a new clinic, Renovo has invested in the latest digital technology, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is accurate, safe and comfortable and results in faster healing. “The whole procedure was very slick and more importantly, pain-free. Dr Khurrum kept checking that I was okay as he conducted the graft,” says Ursula, who returned to Renovo a few months later to have the implant procedure. “The implant looks and feels like my own tooth. My top teeth now are great – it’s really boosted my confidence. “A colleague at work complimented me on

IT’S BEEN QUITE A JOURNEY, BUT IT’S ALL BEEN WORTH IT Speaking about Ursula’s treatment plan, Dr Usman says: “When Ursula came to Renovo Dental it was evident that her upper left front crown had failed some time ago and the resulting extraction left her with compromised gum and bone tissue in the area. Ursula was desperate to have the missing tooth replaced. “The end result was a bespoke metal-free porcelain tooth which perfectly matches her natural existing teeth. “It’s often much easier to carry out restoration work on multiple teeth. Replacing a single tooth, in the smile zone, is much more of a challenge. The gum tissue and the implant restoration must be in perfect harmony with the smile. “Now it looks and feels like a real tooth – Ursula is very sociable and it really has been a confidence booster.” n

advisor asked me what ‘real’ career I was going to pursue, but I wasn’t dissuaded by this – I knew I would find a way.” Once he left school in 1971, John started work at the Co-Op and when Radio Piccadilly, Manchester’s first independent radio station, started in 1974, John recorded himself reading advertisements from his local paper and submitted the tapes to them. Next thing he knew, he had a job reading ads for the station. “I used to work at Piccadilly on my day off from the Co-Op and earned more in one day at the radio than I did all week at the shop!” he said. He would later go on to cut a deal with the Co-Op where he could continue his radio work as long as he would host the shop’s events and talk on the Tannoy. Eventually, John read their adverts on radio too.

I AM LUCKY THAT I HAVE WORKED IN RADIO IN ITS BEST TIMES AND HAVE HAD THE GREATEST LISTENERS

HANGING UP THE

HEADPHONES Following 18 years presenting on BBC Radio Lancashire, John ‘Gilly’ Gillmore has moved on to the next chapter of his impressive broadcast career. He discusses his radio journey, favourite moments and future plans with Alma Stewart. Photography: Michael Porter

I

t was in November 1967 when John Gillmore, a young chap from Prescott, listened to the first broadcast of Radio Merseyside and decided his future career – a radio DJ.

Though receiving no encouragement for this career at school, John was determined that no matter what, he was going to present on the radio. Over a cup of tea at a café in Preston, John explained: “The school career

Later that decade, John volunteered at Whiston Hospital on their hospital radio programmes where he met fellow DJ Derek Webster. In the Eighties, Liverpool’s Radio City ran their ‘Give A Jock A Job’ competition, asking would-be presenters to send in a demo tape. John got down to the final five but didn’t win. Derek Webster, now working at Preston’s Red Rose Radio, mentioned John for some freelance slots. His one shift in 1985 grew to regular weekends (still keeping his job at the Co-Op each Saturday) and became full time in 1987. “It was a rule at the time that the presenters had to live in the area of the station which was at St Paul’s Square, just outside Preston city centre, so we moved to Lea where we have remained ever since. I had various slots at Red Rose – news programmes, lunchtime slots and evenings and of course, the mornings with Geoff Carter with Gilly and Carter’s Breakfast Show. We even had a column in the Preston Citizen newspaper called Gilly and Carter’s Words of Wisdom, where we would reflect on the programme’s highlights and run competitions.” A shake up at the station in 1998 saw the end of John’s Red Rose Radio slots so he found a place at The Bay radio in Morecambe: “I’d always love The Bay,” he said, “so I was delighted to get the chance to work there. I really enjoyed it and the listeners were great.” Having always wanted to work for the BBC, John got the chance in 2005 when managing editor at BBC Radio Lancashire, John Clayton,

lifestyle

contacted John with an opportunity which led to an 18-year stint at the Blackburn-based station. “We had so much fun at Radio Lancashire,” he said, “with so many highlights. The 30 days of Summer was a series of outside broadcasts across Lancashire and that was a great experience as was covering the TT Races in the Isle of Man. We also used to broadcast live from the Harris Museum before Covid put an end to it. Sometimes I have had to pinch myself. I’ve interviewed icons such as Michael Parkinson, Michael Caine and Buzz Aldrin and all of them were very generous interviewees. But some of the best interviews were with the ordinary Lancashire folk. It really hasn’t felt like work at all.” More recently, John has manned the evening show broadcasting across both Lancashire and Cumbria. Following a change to the station’s schedules that now combine

other BBC broadcasts, Gilly’s last show at Radio Lancashire was on 5th October where a number of invited guests joined in the last broadcast from the Radio Theatre studio on Darwen Street.

WE HAD SO MUCH FUN AT RADIO LANCASHIRE, WITH SO MANY HIGHLIGHTS Over his 38 years in radio, John has won a number of awards. In 2014 he broke the Guinness World Record for the most face-toface radio interviews in 24 hours – 239 people. He’s been Marketing Lancashire’s Tourism Superstar and a Lancashire Ambassador. His latest award came as a bit of a shock: “I have been presenting BID Preston’s High Street Heroes Awards since 2012 and in October’s

63

ceremony, I was taken aback to be presented with The High Street Heroes Proud Preston Ambassador Award. I was really happy to receive it as I had no idea I had won.” Though he may have hung up his headphones for now, there are many plans for the next chapter. John concluded: “Radio presenters never retire. I have had a lot of offers of freelance work to compere events and am even hosting a coach tour from Blackburn to Morecambe. I am lucky that I have worked in radio in its best times and have had the greatest listeners, who I have viewed as friends. The secret, I have found, to get the best interviews is to really listen to the guest to create the next question and bring out the best in them. I have absolutely loved talking to the wonderful people of Lancashire over the years. Thanks so much for listening.” n

CHARITY F O C U S Firefighters ‘putt’ in the effort to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support If you want to highlight a charity, please contact: alma.stewart@live-magazines.co.uk

Four firefighters from Lancashire who completed a tough ‘Longest Day’ golf challenge, in memory of one of their colleagues who died from cancer, raised £1,170 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

then in 2021, Adam Wagstaff and Anthony Palmer, along with colleague Matthew Leathard, completed Macmillan’s 13-mile Yorkshire Dales Mighty Hike, which raised £1,159 for people affected by cancer.

The ‘fore-midable’ team – who are based at Penwortham Fire Station – consisted of Adam Wagstaff, Anthony Palmer, Ben Dawe and Jim Aubrey-Williams, who played 72 holes in just one day in aid of the charity.

WE TOOK ON THIS CHALLENGE IN MEMORY OF OUR BELOVED FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE ALASTAIR ‘CUDDY’ CUDWORTH, WHO SADLY PASSED AWAY AFTER AN INTENSE BATTLE WITH CANCER

Their team, called Cuddyshack, was named after their friend and fellow firefighter Alastair Cudworth, who sadly passed away from cancer in January 2020, aged just 48. Cuddy, as he was known to family and colleagues, served as a firefighter for 26 years. He was also a keen amateur footballer and founder member of Whittle Wanderers FC, which he went on to become club secretary and team manager after he hung up his boots. They played four rounds at Leyland Golf Club, after teeing-off – with glow in the dark balls – for their first round at around 5am and finished 14 hours and 17 minutes later at around 7.17pm! Together they clocked up just over 21 miles and have since smashed their initial target to raise £1,170 for the cancer charity.

Macmillan’s Longest Day Golf Challenge, which is now in its 23rd year, encourages teams of friends to play four rounds of golf in 24 hours. And the top four fundraising teams from across the country get the chance to win a free trip to Portugal to compete in the Longest Day Golf Challenge Finals.

Adam explains: “We took on this challenge in memory of our beloved friend and colleague Alastair ‘Cuddy’ Cudworth, who sadly passed away after an intense battle with cancer. He is dearly missed and thought about every time we walk through the doors or take on any sporting event. We know he would have been cheering us on and also laughing at us too! “We wanted to raise awareness and funds for Macmillan and continue Cuddy’s fight on his behalf. Unfortunately, so many people are touched by cancer in one way or another, that we thought it was the right thing to do and try and give something back and help ensure other families affected by cancer get the much-needed support from Macmillan, when they need it most.” Cuddy’s colleagues at Lancashire Fire and Rescue are no strangers to raising funds for charity in his memory. They have previously staged a charity car wash at Penwortham Fire Station for The Firefighters Charity, shortly after Alastair passed away, and

offerings, however, we have always stayed true to our belief in only working with quality products. We promote the leaders in electric bikes – Bosch, Shimano, TQ and Mahle Fazua (part of the Porsche brand). We deal with these brands because they offer reliable systems and provide the aftercare support – we need to always be on hand and service our customers well.

E-BIKES:

THE HOTTEST TREND ON TWO WHEELS?

We speak to the team at MTB Monster to find out more about e-bikes and to learn why they have firmly cemented their place in cycling

M

TB Monster explain just how far electric bikes have come in such a short space of time.

to offer. Bosch have always had such a strong presence in the electrical market and a large proportion of our e-bikes feature Bosch motors.

When did you first get involved with e-bikes?

From our first staff ride out, it was clear that these bikes were built for fun. Everyone calls it the ‘e-bike smile’. It’s that grin that pops up the moment you start pedalling. Going uphill becomes a breeze and it’s so much fun that you can’t help but smile. It totally changes the outdoor exercise game, making it enjoyable for all riders, on all terrains, which is lucky for us living in the Ribble Valley.

Our introduction to the e-bike story started around five years ago. We have always only dealt with premium brands and when Bosch introduced their first offering of e-bikes in partnership with one of our brands, we knew it was the right time to get involved. They did not disappoint with the Cube Reaction, a hardtail e-bike that is still produced today with the latest and greatest that Bosch has

Over the last five years many different companies have brought to market their

Just how far have e-bikes come? In their infancy e-bikes were mechanical bikes with the addition of a motor and a bolt-on external battery. Their primary aim was to assist riders’ efforts by providing a boost of power making cycling easier and more enjoyable. You could select the amount of assistance, from no help, all the way up to ‘boost’, which provided 340 per cent of assistance. This was fantastic and encouraged so many people to get involved in cycling again. Nowadays technology has moved on significantly and all aspects of the e-bike

lifestyle

has been refined. With fully integrated, mid and high torque motor systems and significant weight reductions its often almost impossible to tell the difference between electric and mechanical bikes just by looking. In recent years attention has been focused on redesigning frame geometry to ensure bikes are perfectly balanced. The speed of the change in both technology and design has been incredible.

An e-bike means you can get out into the countryside and home in record timing.

end up home. The perfect end to a day in the office.

• Change of sport due to injury. We often meet people who have been keen runners or athletes in other fields and due to wear and tear or injury, have been advised to try cycling as an alternative as it is less intense on your joints.

• If you love the thrill of riding downhill but are not so keen on the getting to the top, an e-bike is your best friend, allowing you to enjoy plenty of downhill runs with minimum uphill effort. By selecting a lightweight e-bike you are guaranteed the most natural ride on the descents too.

Is the trend here to stay?

What would you say is the main appeal of electric bikes? Electric bikes appeal to different people for different reasons and over the past five years of selling them we have come across such a wide variety of reasons why people get involved in e-biking, I couldn’t possibly recall them all. Some of the main ones include:

• Flattening the terrain for riders returning to sport after time out. Sometimes hills can seem too big to tackle. An e-bike can ‘flatten’ every hill making each ride relaxing and enjoyable. • Speeding up the time for those with busy lives. Finding time for yourself is often difficult with work and family commitments.

69

WE ARE NOW IN THE PROCESS OF PUTTING TOGETHER A DEMO FLEET OF E-BIKES FOR HIRE AND ALREADY HAVE SOME MODELS AVAILABLE • Keeping up with friends or a partner. Many people now find themselves in the position whereby their riding buddies or partners are too fast for them either due to a gap in fitness levels or the fact that they have already invested in an e-bike. The only way to keep up is to get involved. • Commuting to and from work on an e-bike is great. You can use boost functions in the morning, so you are not arriving at work tired and in need of a shower and then go for a ride straight from work and

Yes undoubtedly! Whilst there is still a lot of love for mechanical bikes, and rightly so, e-bikes have so much to offer. For us the main factor that often gets overlooked, is that they significantly reduce the amount of motivation needed to get out and cycle in the first place. Even the fittest of people are not always in the mood to go out. An e-bike changes all that. We are now in the process of putting together a demo fleet of e-bikes for hire and already have some models available and soon you will be able to book out directly through the website, but for now all you need to do is get in touch. n To find out more visit: mtbmonster.com call 01254 959345 or pop along to our showroom on the A59. IMPROVING THE COMMUNITY – TOGETHER Lytham St Annes Civic Society has a new chair, Ansdell-based architect Joel Firth. Joel has big plans to bring community groups and businesses together with one shared goal – to support the places they love

F

or the last 20 years, Joel Firth of Firth Associates, has made Lytham his home. Growing up in Cleveleys, he was keen to live by the sea again and give his family a similar experience of the joys of living on the coast.

Setting up his practice in a former bank in Ansdell, Joel has become used to seeing the many volunteers around the nearby train station, ensuring the area is neat and maintained. Joel said: “Over the last ten years especially I’ve been involved with

most local community groups in the area that could benefit from architectural input and I’m constantly uplifted by how many dedicated volunteers there are supporting their local area. I’ve recently taken on the role of chair for the Lytham St Annes Civic Society and this will enable me to support these community groups more going forward.”

BEING PROUD OF WHERE YOU LIVE INVOLVES EVERYONE RESIDING IN THE AREA AND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY PROJECTS TO GET INVOLVED WITH – THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT Founded in 1960, the Civic Society has the connotations of just being about old buildings – but it is so much more. The group

businesses and encourage the whole area to thrive and evoke a sense of civic pride. We would also love local business to get involved and sponsor some of our projects so it really does become a community effort,” Joel added.

is dedicated to the improvement of Lytham and St Annes as a place to live, work and relax. They believe in the conservation of the best of our buildings and townscapes, and in a high standard of design for new buildings. They aim to protect the built and historic environment of the towns, not forgetting its open spaces and coastline. Joel is aiming to make the Civic Society a catalyst for bringing together the many local charity groups throughout Lytham and St Annes so they can get acquainted and spot any opportunities for mutual benefits to support both towns. For example, the Society owns Lytham’s Witch Wood which requires regular maintenance. With a strong network of community groups, new and existing volunteers can be sought to help with the tasks here, creating more beautiful space for people to enjoy, together. “By joining up existing volunteer groups, we can also help and support our local

And there are also many exciting plans afoot for the Society’s future. Joel continued: “We are exploring the idea of fully inclusive heritage trails encompassing St Annes, Fairhaven, Ansdell and Lytham, possibly using QR codes along the routes for further information on areas of interest. I would also like to introduce a Civic Awards dinner where local projects can be recognised for their efforts. This can also raise funds which can then, in turn, support other local projects.” The Society is also encouraging younger people to become members. Being proud of where you live involves everyone residing in the area and there are a number of community projects to get involved with – there is no age limit. Many companies now offer charity days to employees and local projects could be the perfect choice. Completely independent and apolitical, the Society works closely with external agencies including Fylde Borough Council’s planning department. Although the Society has no authority to rule on many matters, it can certainly signpost residents to the appropriate departments for help. Some of the Society’s recent projects include funding the production of a ‘Local List’ of heritage assets, saving the Mussel

71

Tank on Lytham Green from commercial development, commissioned more Blue Plaques and arranges talks, walks and trips to places of interest. Becoming a member provides residents with a voice about their area and the opportunity to meet new people with a common interest. Joel concluded: “I now dedicate Fridays to community work and I am starting to have mid monthly Thursday night meetings at my studio in Ansdell, starting on 16th November. It’s more like a supper club than a formal meeting. I really want local people who love their town to help reimagine what the Civic Society can do, to be a positive influence and to bring all the other local community groups together on coordinated projects. I need experts in advertising, marketing, sales and events right through to project managers and local building contractors. We are so lucky to already have an existing active army of volunteers doing some fantastic work. With more members, the possibilities are endless. If you want to help, you would be made very welcome at the next meeting so you can learn more about the Society’s work and plans. With more like- minded people, so much can be achieved.” n

GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF PEACE OF MIND THIS CHRISTMAS With guidance from a solicitor, writing a Will can ensure you provide appropriately for your loved ones, advises Elizabeth Whitaker of Forbes

T

he Christmas season is the time of year when we perhaps give greatest consideration to what is most important to us. We spend time with our families, away from the stress and whirlwind of everyday routines, and the holidays can give us the headspace to consider not only how we can provide for our families for Christmas, but also for the longer term. Admittedly, planning for your ultimate demise is not the most festive of activities and indeed it won’t feel like the top of your priority list among the present wrapping, tree decorating and mulled wine quaffing.

Why should I make a Will?

Many people put off making a Will, knowing that it is a sensible step, but delaying it for fear of having to face difficult decisions, or simply because they feel it is a job for another time, or a concern for the ‘elderly’. Writing a Will doesn’t have to be complicated, and with the right advice you can ensure that you can provide properly and appropriately for your loved ones after you have gone. You

can use your Will to specify who will be responsible for dealing with your estate after you die, to appoint legal guardians for minor children, to make sure your money goes to the right people in the right proportions or to leave a gift for a special charity that means a lot to you.

LEAVING A WILL IS ALSO THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR FAMILY SIMPLY FROM A PRACTICAL PERSPECTIVE Leaving a Will is also the best thing you can do for your family simply from a practical perspective. If you do not have a Will, the law dictates who will be allowed to take responsibility for dealing with your estate after you die, and who is entitled to receive your assets, and in what proportions. This means that neither you nor your family has any control over how your estate is dealt with. This can lead to family disputes and it can be harder and more expensive for your family to deal with your estate after you die. Leaving clear instructions in a Will can take care of this aspect for them, at a time when emotions are running high and decision-making can be difficult. Nothing feels better than knowing you’ve looked after your loved ones, particularly looking ahead to a time when you are no longer there.

What do I need to decide when making a Will? The main things to consider are as follows:

1. Who to appoint as executors – these will be the people who are responsible for dealing with your estate after you have died, either by themselves or with the help of a solicitor. 2. Who do you want to inherit your estate? You may need to consider gifts of your personal possessions, vulnerable or minor beneficiaries, inheritance tax considerations, or what will happen to your business or properties after you have died.

Do I need to use a solicitor to make a Will?

There is no legal requirement to use a solicitor, but it is a good idea to seek advice from a professional who will be able to advise you about the inheritance tax position of your estate and the best way to structure your Will to take into account the circumstances of your beneficiaries. You can then be sure that your Will is appropriately drafted and legally valid. n For more information on how we can help you prepare a Will please contact Elizabeth Whitaker at: elizabeth.whitaker@forbessolicitors.co.uk or 0333 207 1130

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS…

A POSITIVE CO-PARENTING ARRANGEMENT Many of these challenges can be avoided however, by following some useful tips on how to plan for the Christmas period.

PLAN AND COMMUNICATE

Whilst this may sound obvious, the sooner you start a discussion about Christmas plans, the more time you have to finalise plans that suit everyone. This is far better than leaving things until the last minute, or leaving one person disappointed or upset. Or even worse, that a child is disappointed not to be able to spend time with a parent over Christmas.

Angharad Bentley, family law partner at Farleys, explains how you can avoid the many and varied co-parenting challenges that present themselves at Christmas

A

s the winter nights draw in, and the shops start to fill up with Christmas decorations, thoughts turn to family arrangements for the big day. For some this is as simple as how to avoid Christmas lunch at the in-laws, but for parents who have separated, the festive period often brings the added complication of how to celebrate and ensure that it is a joyous and happy time for their children as well as themselves.

You should also think about whether your regular contact schedule needs to be modified in the run up to Christmas, as well as any ‘emergency plans’, which would come into place if, for example, bad weather makes travelling difficult or impossible. Once you have reached an agreement, put it in writing so that there is no ambiguity regarding arrangements for travel and handover times.

ONCE YOU HAVE REACHED AN AGREEMENT, PUT IT IN WRITING SO THAT THERE IS NO AMBIGUITY BE FLEXIBLE

Every family is different and it’s important to remember that arrangements should be in the child’s best interests. They will want to and will benefit from, celebrating Christmas with both parents and their wider family members. So, remember that it does not need to be on the day itself, and that Christmas is a holiday. Be willing to compromise where possible, for the

sake of the child, and explore the option of alternating arrangements the following year. Maintaining flexibility is important for a positive co-parenting relationship and helps to limit disagreement. Christmas can be such an emotive time for separated families, but it does not have to be. Be kind, considerate and realistic. Put aside differences for one day and allow your child to experience the magic of Christmas with each parent.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

As lawyers, we become extraordinarily busy at this time of the year, helping parents looking to resolve disputes regarding one or the other’s plans for the holidays. While this may come in the form of applications to the Court, more often than not, these disputes can be resolved without the need for court proceedings. It is important however to take advice early, and not leave it too close to Christmas. If you’re still struggling to agree arrangements for Christmas, or any other time of year and are looking for support or advice, whether in discussions with your co-parent, through mediation, or in relation to an application to the Family Court, our experts at Farleys are on hand to help. n

Barton Grange Garden Centre has been the most inspirational destination for top quality plants and everything you could need for your garden for 60 years now. Famed for its annual Christmas display, we find out more about the centre’s long-established success from managing director, Guy Topping

T

o say you have been working in your business since you were four years old is no mean feat, but Guy Topping has been involved in his family’s businesses since before he started school. The story of Barton Grange Garden Centre started more than 70 years ago when market gardeners Edward and Ada Topping, Guy’s grandparents, bought a large mansion in Barton with a plan to turn it into a hotel. The Barton Grange Hotel opened in 1951 and was to become the place to get married with a reputation for high standards of customer service.

WE GREW UP IN BARTON AND LOVE THE COMMUNITY AND BEING PART OF IT Meanwhile, son Eddie studied horticulture and once qualified, set up a market garden in the five-acre grounds of the hotel, going on to create a landscaping business. Growing success resulted in Eddie opening the first garden centre in the North West. Guy said: “My grandma was the real driving force in the businesses. She was a perfectionist with a real passion to do the best she could and I think that has rubbed off on all of us.” Guy worked at the centre through his childhood returning after studying horticulture at college. Dad Eddie asked Guy to work for the company and so he and took charge of the second garden centre in Bolton in the Nineties. “Dad gradually handed over the reigns to me and my brothers – Ian, running the hotel and Peter, the nursery and landscape division,” Guy said, “and I did consider expanding to open more centres than the three we had at the time, but I decided to

concentrate on the expansion of one new site and 15 years ago, we moved onto the current plot at Brock.” A new site was needed as the original centre at Barton was out-growing the space and more car parking was needed. The new site had 50 acres – more than enough space for a large centre complete with a planned marina and with room to grow. The new site was opened by HRH Princess Anne in 2008 and a particular highlight for Guy: “It was an amazing day,” he said, “and one I will never forget.” Now of course, the site includes a homeware section, farm shop, café and restaurant gift shop and pet supplies. Plus, The Flower Bowl entertainment centre and the only curling rink in the UK, with people travelling from all over the country to play and compete. The business also prides itself in supporting local communities, helping wherever they can. Guy said: “We grew up in Barton and love the community and being part of it. We’ve always tried to help with various charity events and fundraisers and I do talks to various groups. We all enjoy giving back to the locals and people who have supported our business over the years.” When it comes to Christmas, a visit to the Barton Grange display is a must. The sheer scale of the many sections of the Christmas wonderland means that the team start before the previous festive period. Guy explained: “The pandemic meant that supplies were harder to secure and so now we make our orders early to ensure we can get what we need in time, so we are working about 15 months ahead. The orders are delivered in July when we start to sell smaller items like Christmas cards. We start with a vengeance in September with six to seven weeks of intensive building

95

for completion by October half term. Several teams get involved with creating the different areas and our display team love being let loose to create something spectacular.” There is a dedicated system too. Every hook and shelf has a product number so that the team know exactly where each item will go. “Childrens Christmas events are also a big part of our festive offering and we are always working to make them a great experience. I’m always mindful of these events being the best they can be, because I’d hate to mess up someone’s Christmas visit. So, we pull out all the stops and I am particularly proud of what we provide.”

OUR STRONG FAMILY VALUES PERMEATE THROUGHOUT THE BUSINESS As for continuing the family business into the next generation, there are already three younger Toppings working in the business. Guy added: “Our strong family values permeate throughout the business. We have some very long-standing members of staff and some very loyal customers who travel from all areas of the UK to visit us. When I walk around the centre, it’s heart-warming to hear customers showing their friends around describing the items and highlighting the separate areas like they feel they own part of the place – it’s brilliant. If grandma Ada could see this now, she’d be tickled pink.” n

NEXT PHASE OF MARKET

FESTIVAL CAPACITY INCREASE

The highly anticipated opening of the retail offer at Abingdon Street Market is edging closer! The doors that open out onto Abington Street itself will once again be in full use, allowing customers to enjoy the array of market stalls which will be open for business from the 10th November onwards. Lytham Festival organisers Cuffe & Taylor have submitted to Fylde Council’s Licensing Team their application to increase the size of the event to 25,000 people per day for 2024 and onwards. This follows the approval of an increase to 22,500 for two days of the 2023 Lytham Festival after a meeting of the Licensing Panel to determine the matter, and the publication of an independent report that found the subsequent larger festival provided a significant boost to local businesses and was viewed positively by residents. The application was open for 28 days to give residents and business owners opportunity to make representation for or against the proposals.

WINTER CAR PREP As the chill in the air becomes more pronounced, it’s time to give your beloved car the tender loving care it deserves to brave the harsh winter months

W

hether you’re behind the wheel of a BMW, a Porsche, a Land Rover or a trusty Honda, the following tips will ensure you’re prepared for a safe and comfortable winter journey.

TYRES: THE FOUNDATION OF WINTER SAFETY

Your choice of tyres can make a world of difference in winter conditions. Consider switching to winter or all-season tyres if your vehicle doesn’t come equipped with them. BMW and Porsche enthusiasts, known for their performance-oriented vehicles, can especially benefit from high-quality winter tyres to maintain traction and control. Land Rover drivers, with their legendary off-road machines, should ensure their tyres are in optimal condition, as the terrain tackled during winter can be particularly challenging. Honda owners, known for their practicality and reliability, should also check their tyre

tread depth and condition, making sure they are suitable for winter driving.

BRAKES: THE STOPPING POWER Your brakes play a pivotal role in winter safety. Have them inspected to ensure they are in tip-top condition. BMW and Porsche owners, accustomed to high-performance braking systems, should be extra diligent in ensuring their brakes are up to the task. Land Rover drivers, who often venture off the beaten path, should pay extra attention to their brakes as well. Honda owners can rely on the dependable braking systems their vehicles offer, but regular maintenance checks are still crucial for peace of mind during winter.

FLUIDS: KEEP IT FLOWING

Winter can take a toll on your vehicle’s fluids. Make sure to top up your antifreeze and windshield washer fluid. BMW and Porsche drivers should be particularly cautious, given the precision engineering of their cars. Land Rover enthusiasts should ensure their vehicle’s fluids are well-prepared for the winter off-road adventures that lie ahead. Honda owners can trust their cars to perform reliably, but it’s always wise to keep an eye on fluid levels, especially the essential engine oil.

BATTERY: STAY CHARGED

The cold weather can be harsh on your car’s battery. It’s a good idea to have it tested to ensure it’s in good health. BMW and Porsche owners, who cherish their highend machines, should pay special attention to their batteries. Land Rover drivers should be proactive in battery maintenance, especially if they plan to venture into remote winter landscapes. Honda drivers, known for their practical approach, can rely on the robustness of their batteries, but it’s wise to check them before winter sets in.

LIGHTS: SEE AND BE SEEN

Visibility is crucial during winter. Ensure all your vehicle’s lights are working correctly, from the headlights to the indicators. BMW and Porsche owners, proud of their stylish rides, should ensure their lights are in perfect condition. Land Rover enthusiasts, often traversing challenging terrains, should make sure all their lights are in working order as driving in night time in the countryside can be especially daunting. Whatever vehicle you choose, ensure that all is working perfectly before winter sets in! n

AS FOR THE DRIVE ITSELF, IT HANDLES QUITE BRILLIANTLY AND THE STEERING IS AS LIGHT AS THE RUNNING IS QUIET The standard Pod Point Home Charger offers efficient charging compared to a domestic three-pin socket, expert Pod Point installation and connection to the Pod Point app to view charging activity, track costs and schedule charging.

Whatever you desire, you’ll find it right here.

As for the range itself – just spend a little time viewing the iX1, iX, iX3, i4, i5 and i7.

Opt instead for £750 credit towards BMW public charging and you can tap into over 300,000 charging points across the UK and Europe.*

Be inspired, this is the future. So, let’s take a quick performance snapshot: • The BMW iX1 (xDrive30) has an electric range of up to 270 miles and can accelerate 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds. • The BMW iX3 has an electric range of up to 285 miles and can accelerate 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds. • The BMW i5 (eDrive40) has an electric

range of up to 357 miles and can accelerate 0-62 mph in 6 seconds. • The BMW i7 (xDrive60) has an electric range of up to 387 miles and can accelerate 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds. All models provide practical and sustainable mobility solutions and oodles of driving pleasure, for everyday needs. Just pick the model that best suits your lifestyle and away you go.

Stand-out highlights include a frameless curved display that can be interacted via intuitive touch and voice control and mighty powerful software housed within a connected 10.7 inch control display and 10.25 inch instrument display, ensuring a seamless communication between driver and vehicle.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting them all at close quarters, most recently the iX1 (M Sport variant) a car very close to achieving a perfection rating, capable of electrifying all your adventures and fulfilling every expectation of a Sports Activity Vehicle. With technological support (and surprises) at every turn, the BMW iX1 is cool and comfortable, nippy and spacious, technically blessed and lovely to look at.

and heating function you could wish for and a gently curved touchscreen infotainment and instrumentation display console.

Add stylish sports seats, a stunning glass sunroof, plenty of leg room, storage space and a ‘floating armrest’ housing key controls like the start/stop function, gear lever switch and electromechanical parking brake.

IN A NUTSHELL, BMW IS SETTING THE STANDARD WITHIN THE GLOBAL ELECTRIC CAR MARKETPLACE

As for style and comfort, intelligence and technology, need you ask? These are BMWs for goodness sake, it’s as good as it gets!

101

As for the drive itself, it handles quite brilliantly and the steering is as light as the running is quiet. The ‘big brother’ BMW i7 saloon exudes luxury, transporting you from place to place in supreme safety and exceptional comfort. Despite its power and purpose, it is both smooth and quiet and surprisingly nimble through corners, the four-wheel steering system making light weight of every journey. Inside you’ll find cleverly combined leathers, veneers and decorative chrome trims and some truly beautiful secondary controls made from Swarovski crystal, broad front seats with every motorised adjustment, massage

In a nutshell, BMW is setting the standard within the global electric car marketplace with a range that is as appealing as it is exciting. No surprise there then. n *Available to both retail and business customers. All the necessary terms and conditions can be found on the BMW website.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR The Lanigan family have been Lytham’s local fishmongers since before World War II. Here, the third-generation owner, Andrew Lanigan, describes this incredible history and what makes the legendary shop so special. Photography: Michael Porter

“I

t all starts in Manchester,” explains Andrew, “with my grandfather Matthias who was so poor as a youngster that he and his brother would sit outside the factories and beg workers for a bit of bread. Somewhere along the line, my grandfather worked in the wholesale fish market in Smithfield ending up at Manchester’s Midland Hotel as a buyer. He then owned a fishmongers and poultry shop in Didsbury.” Because of health problems and the smog in the city, Matthias looked to move his wife and his four children in 1931, somewhere with cleaner air and where better than by

the sea in Lytham. “My grandad got off the train at Lytham station and walked past a shop for sale on

CUSTOMERS CAN ENJOY THE LIKE OF CRABS FROM BRIDLINGTON, SCALLOPS FROM KIRKCUDBRIGHT, LOBSTER FROM THE ISLE OF MAN AND FLEETWOOD Park Street – where the shoe section of Stringers is now, and bought it,” said Andrew, “and it was next to EH Booths so you can

imagine the pull it had.” The shop was to move five years later to its current site at 74 Clifton Street. There were no supermarkets then, so people would shop daily for fresh produce and Lanigans ran a daily delivery service too. Sadly, Matthias senior died in his late forties so his oldest daughter Amy ran the business along with her three brothers Jack, Bill and Matt (Matthias junior), Andrew’s dad. “People in those days ate far more fish than they do now. They had it at breakfast, lunch and tea and so the business did really well,” Andrew added. The local fishing industry was much bigger than it is now, though local shrimp and bass are still as important to Lanigans as they were then. Lanigans still provide a wide variety of fresh delights along with a wide selection of game which used to hang all around the shop. Some of Andrew’s earliest memories are

food&drink

in the shop’s delivery van with driver, Bob Shaw. Andrew, eager to earn pocket money, would always be keen to work, a habit he continues. “I’m the youngest of six children and am a triplet,” he said, “so with the family business, I never even considered working anywhere else. Most of the family have worked in the shop at one time or another. We often have people in the shop who had a Saturday job with us over the years.” In 1975 after leaving education, Andrew joined his father in the shop full time and would often go back to the shop at night, getting the bus from his home in St Annes, to pluck pheasants.

Today, you can still buy a huge selection of fresh fish, seafood, game and poultry which are also supplied to restaurants and hotels. Dependent on the season, customers can enjoy the like of crabs from Bridlington, scallops from Kirkcudbright, lobster from the Isle of Man, oysters from Lindisfarne and local shrimps, bass and Dover sole. Wild sea trout often come from Yorkshire’s river Esk. Fresh salmon from Scotland’s Loch Duart is regularly available and salmon has been the most popular purchase through the years. Andrew continued: “Nowadays my son Tom works in the shop full time alongside Robert, who has been with us for 40 years

and Jean who has been with us for more than 25 years. My wife Ade works behind the scenes with bookkeeping and helping organise the Christmas orders. Robert cuts our Cumbrian chickens, and the taste is so much better than your average chicken. In fact, we can compete with the big supermarkets on price and certainly on quality. Regular customers will be familiar with Jean’s flair for arranging platters and displays to make them look extra special.”

ROBERT CUTS OUR CUMBRIAN CHICKENS, AND THE TASTE IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOUR AVERAGE CHICKEN The wide variety of game including pheasant, grouse, partridge, rabbit, hare, pigeon, woodcock and snipe is shot locally and is prepared ready to take away. The majority of venison is shot in the northern Lake District. With the reduction in independent fishmongers, Lanigan’s has become the destination on the top of many shoppers’ lists, both locally and further afield, throughout the year and especially at Christmas where orders can be made in advance and collected near to the big day. You can expect the best quality food with the best quality service. And what is Andrew’s favourite fish dish? “Funnily enough, I had fish for my tea last night, lemon sole. But if I were to choose a favourite, it would have to be halibut with a shrimp sauce – absolutely delicious.” n

FLYING HIGH WITH FLAVOUR Kate Bowyer drops in to relaunched favourite The Pickled Goose at Barton, just north of Preston on the A6, celebrating its vibrant relaunch after the twin challenges of lockdown and the cost of living crisis. Photography: Michael Porter

F

ollowing an extended post-Covid pause, it’s clear the revitalised Pickled Goose is once again flying high. The comfortable-luxe ‘wow factor’ comes from its £300k refurbishment, and its finishing touches overseen by local interior designer Victoria Bailey. Sitting down with new general manager Jamie Hall, my tastebuds are tingling after just one look at the all-new menu, which has been creating a buzz since the Goose’s October reopening. “The whole team are passionate about our new chapter,” explains Jamie, as I tuck into delicious homemade goats’ cheese gnocchi and salt and pepper squid. “Fresh, locally sourced produce which celebrates this area’s food heritage remains at the heart of the menu, but served in relaxed, tapas-inspired style. This maximises freshness and smooth service, with a greater choice than the standard starter-and-main format. “Customers are already telling us they’re enjoying comparing and sharing a wider variety of flavours through our multiple-dish

choices, while traditional Sunday roasts are of course on offer every week, with a choice of meat and veggie options and all the trimmings.”

FRESH, LOCALLY SOURCED PRODUCE WHICH CELEBRATES THIS AREA’S FOOD HERITAGE REMAINS AT THE HEART OF THE MENU Jamie is also keen to put his cocktail expertise and enthusiasm to good use: “Complementing our great range of food and beers, wines and spirits, we want to establish a vibrant drinking environment that invites the local community to call in for a catch up with friends or to share a bottle of fizz during one of our live music nights. “Victoria’s gorgeous designs plus this style of menu, blend eating, drinking and relaxing perfectly. From foodies to the social diner, those with a lighter appetite or just popping for a drink and nibble, guests are discovering a much

greater choice, in a welcoming atmosphere.” Whilst Jamie treats me to the temptations of a classic lemon baked Alaska, I can see how inviting the abundant sharing party menu will be for Christmas groups. Plans for 2024 include an expansion of the outside areas, longer opening hours, and regular live music events. “This is just the beginning,” confirms Jamie, “Building on an awesome start, our goal is to make The Pickled Goose a real community hub pub and destination restaurant.” n The Pickled Goose 807 Garstang Road Barton Preston PR3 5AA 01772 802280 thepickledgoose.com

PERFECT CHRISTMAS CHEESEBOARD The experts at Bowland Food Hall give their top tips on putting together a delicious, festive cheeseboard

T

he most wonderful time of the year is creeping closer and you may already be well underway with planning the festivities.

Whether you’re planning a Boxing Day bash, a festive family get-together or you just want a delicious end to your Christmas dinner, a cheeseboard is always a crowd pleaser. To

help you make it extra special this year, the team at Bowland Food Hall have some top tips on how to create the perfect cheeseboard this festive season.

Choose a good range of different cheeses

The cheese has to be the main event and you want to make sure that there’s something to cater for everyone. We suggest that you include at least one type of soft, semi-soft, hard, blue and aged cheese. Include cheeses that you know are a safe bet like a traditional Lancashire such as Mrs Kirkham’s. But it is Christmas after all, so why not have a bit of fun and include something different such as a truffle pecorino or a Vacherin Mont D’Or – an intense, gooey French semi-soft cheese. Here at Bowland Food Hall we

food&drink Accompaniments are key

The cheese may be the main event, but it has to be elevated by some great accompaniments. Treat your guests to more than just a box of crackers, some grapes and a chutney. Why not add seasonal fruit like figs which pair with goat’s cheese, or include dried fruits like apricots which go well with hard cheese? Getting a good mix of sweet and salty accompaniments is the key to a great cheeseboard. Include some pickles or olives, alongside fruit to give plenty of choice. Then we come to the chutneys or jams – whether it’s caramelised red onion, quince paste or a festive fruit chutney, there should be plenty of it. A homemade chutney would be a lovely touch, but Christmas is busy enough! Hawkshead Relish Chutney have a fantastic range of chutneys and relishes including their popular Cheeseboard Chutney. We also love

WHY NOT HAVE A BIT OF FUN AND INCLUDE A TRUFFLE PECORINO OR A VACHERIN MONT D’OR – AN INTENSE, GOOEY FRENCH SEMI-SOFT CHEESE Procter’s Cheeses Kick Ass Chutney to add a bit of spice to your cheeseboard. Finally, onto the bread or crackers and again there should be lots of variety. There are some fantastic ranges of crackers available that will not only taste delicious with the cheese but look fantastic on the cheeseboard too. We would recommend Miller’s Elements or Peter’s Yard.

Appearance is everything

also get a very special Prosecco Pecorino at Christmas, which is very popular with our customers. Smelly cheeses are not for everyone so be mindful of this, unless of course, you know your guests are fans of

INCORPORATE FESTIVE COLOURS – THE CHILLI LANCASHIRE CHEESE BOMB HAS RED WAX AND LOOKS LIKE A CHRISTMAS BAUBLE the malodorous types. We often get asked how much cheese you should include on a cheeseboard and this depends on the number of guests – we would recommend 60 to 80 grams of cheese per person.

Now you’ve got all the elements for the perfect Christmas cheeseboard, the fun can begin putting it together. Why not add some seasonal touches such as a few sprigs of holly or you could incorporate Christmas colours with a beautiful gold detailed wooden board or add cheeses such as the Chilli Lancashire Cheese Bomb by Shorrocks that has red wax and looks like a Christmas bauble. Adding garnishes is a great way to fill the board so it looks full and inviting – using fresh herbs is a great way to finish your cheeseboard or adding nuts or dried fruit to fill any gaps. Finish your cheeseboard off with some beautiful cheese knives – we love the knives by Culinary Concepts. Finally, we would always recommend adding cheese markers to each cheese so your guests know which cheeses are which – why not go that little bit further and add a short description for each cheese? Our team on the deli counter at Bowland Food Hall would be happy to help you with this. n holmesmill.co.uk/food-hall

Alan Veale grew up in Lytham during the Sixties. His lifelong interest in the arts has prompted him to reflect on the changing circumstances around the Fylde Coast, concluding that a brighter future is on the horizon

I

once performed during a summer season at St Annes’ Ashton Theatre. This was in 1977, in a dreadful play that alternated with a variety show. While audiences recognised that the script was mediocre, our director would laugh loudly at the back of the auditorium to encourage a warmer response.

But there was no money at all within a few weeks when the theatre – a lovely feature at the entrance to Ashton Gardens – was burned to the ground.

IT HAS TAKEN YEARS OF HARD WORK, TEAM-BUILDING AND WISE INVESTMENT TO BRING LOWTHER TO A POINT WHERE OTHERS SEEK TO FOLLOW This was the second St Annes theatre to be lost to a fire, the first being the stunning Sultan’s Palace at the end of the pier three years earlier. Losing the Ashton seemed especially sad, as in the early Seventies it played host to many big stars of stage and

screen including Dirk Bogarde, Irene Handl and Wilfred Brambell. But audiences had become complacent, and the theatre struggled financially. As the decade came to a close, the Lytham St Annes arts scene was dying. While Fylde Borough Council initially vowed to rebuild the Ashton, economic realities soon struck home – with an alternative plan coming to the surface. Or, as we theatricals would say: “the plot thickened”. If those two St Annes theatres were reimagined as pantomime characters, their glamour and beauty might be unkindly represented as the Ugly Sisters. Just down the road in Lytham was their Cinderella-like cousin – the neglected and dowdy Lowther Pavilion. Of timber construction, the

LYTHAM’S CINDERELLA SHALL GO TO THE BALL!

OWNERSHIP WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE TRUST IN 2012 AND THEIR EFFORTS SINCE HAVE BROUGHT RESULTS THAT EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS Five million pounds is to be spent over the next few years to convert the entire building into a multi-space complex, complementing the beautiful gardens in which the theatre stands. The first phase is underway, with a steel frame being erected behind the stage and dressing rooms. The shell will be ready for fitting out by the end of April 2024, and once completed, it will house a performance studio accommodating 150 seats. Intended for both theatrical and educational use, one side can open up to connect with the gardens. Will Cinderella live happily ever after? Well, I suppose I could continue the analogy and ask Prince Charming, but the man with all the answers is Tim Lince, Lowther’s Artistic Director and CEO. He admits: “It’s exciting to see a theatre come back from the brink.” So, how did Lowther Pavilion make such a dramatic turnaround? Tim applauds a decision made by former owners Fylde Borough Council in 2011. By that time the theatre was losing a quarter of a million pounds a year, but public support in the shape of The Friends of Lowther Pavilion, born three years earlier, led to the formation of the Lowther Gardens (Lytham) Trust, a registered charity. Ownership was transferred to the Trust in 2012 and their efforts since have brought results that exceeded expectations. It has taken years of hard work, team-

building and wise investment to bring Lowther to a point where others seek to follow. For example, £50,000 was spent on a state-of-the-art Line Array sound system. Why? Because that kind of spec attracts A-list performers and those are the names that put bums on seats. The strategy has worked well, seeing a 40 per cent increase in advanced ticket sales year on year. Even Covid-19 contributed to Lowther’s success. While other theatres closed their doors, the team here were determined to keep going. Where else could you find a complete panto being performed on the back of a lorry in a car park? Rehearsals were filmed and then streamed to rooms at a local care home. By the end of the pandemic, 10,000 more were online every week. But panto’s biggest audience comes from the other end of the age scale, and Tim explains what he sees as an ordinary day at an extraordinary venue: “Coming out of the

pandemic, there was a massive increase in the number of children not attending school. Bringing young people into Lowther for creative workshops and other educational events encourages them to discover what a theatre has to offer. These youngsters will be our audiences – and performers – in the future.” Another wise investment. I began this article last month reflecting on the apparent disparity in fortunes between Lytham and St Annes. While it is clear the pendulum has swung in favour of Lytham in recent years, what I found at Lowther Pavilion sets a beacon for others to follow, and perhaps St Annes will also benefit from an optimistic future. n The pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk opens at Lowther on Monday 4th December.

building remained largely unaltered over fifty years – except for decay. Only a year before fire number two, the council held an emergency meeting to discuss its fate, after a car accident revealed major structural issues. But now, as the last theatre standing (the one at Lytham Baths was already earmarked for redevelopment), Lowther would benefit hugely from new investment. With the exception of the barrel-vaulted roof and maple auditorium flooring, the entire building received a brick and concrete makeover in 1982, while keeping to the original footprint of the sixty-year-old structure. Finally, Cinderella had her ballgown! When I visited Lowther in October, the outside appearance was a little shabby – peeling paintwork and stained concrete. Cinderella had lost her glass slipper and resumed her rags. But wait! By the time you read this, her transformation will have begun…

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT The award-winning international smash hit musical The Bodyguard recently played at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. Here, Ashley Rigby reviews the show

Y

ou know the story, the film and of course that iconic film, The Bodyguard, and let’s be honest we aren’t here for the titular character but the charismatic singer portrayed by the late, great Whitney Houston. This musical adaptation arrives with a bang – literally – a gunshot rings out across the auditorium as pyrotechnics give way to the opening number; a spirited rendition of Queen of the Night. The musical numbers are spectacular,

multi-platinum Australian recording artist Emily Williams sings with gusto as superstar Rachel Marron, whilst West-End star EmilyMae shines as Rachel’s sister Nicki. Serving up some impeccable harmonies in a revue of Houston’s songbook. It is undeniable Houston has a great catalogue of hits and many feature here. Iconic numbers including Million Dollar Bill, Greatest Love, Saving All My Love, are weaved into the story.

THE MUSICAL NUMBERS ARE SPECTACULAR Elsewhere, Ayden Callaghan’s turn as the titular Bodyguard Frank, comes across well. The action sequences are not very dramatic and lack suspense but are performed with aplomb. The highlight of the show is a rousing rendition of I Will Always Love You, before an encore of I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Overall, if you are expecting a musical recreation of the iconic 90s film you will be disappointed but that’s not to say that as a show, it doesn’t have what it needs to be just as enjoyable. If you are up for a jukebox revue of Houston’s career, you will love it! As a fan of Houston and the film itself it was a great testament to the story. Kudos too,

to the dancers and singers for channelling the spirit of Ms Houston.

Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar nominated Warner Bros. movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard, directed by Thea Sharrock with book by Oscar winning Alex Dinelaris, had its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End and was nominated for four Olivier Awards. A sell out 18 month UK and Ireland tour followed, before the show returned to the West End at the Dominion Theatre ahead of a second sell out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2018/19. To date, The Bodyguard has played to over 3.6 million people in 15 countries and 45 US cities. Countries include the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, China, Canada, Italy, Australia, Spain, France, the US, Austria and Japan. n

SAMBALICIOUS! For 25 years a Chorley-based samba drumming band has been wowing audiences with their unique beats. Alma Stewart chats to two of SambAfriq’s members learning more about the not-for-profit group

I

Rivington Festival of Light Chorley Live and Chorley Flower Show, but we also perform further afield in Preston and Wigan. We all have so much fun.” The group meets for practice each Friday evening where anyone is welcome to turn up and join in with the Afro Brazilian beats. New members do not need prior experience, just the enthusiasm to join in and make new friends. Spare drums and sticks are available to use.

t all started with couple Steve and Julia Davies decided that instead of travelling to Manchester to play the samba drums, they would create their own group in Chorley and encourage the local community to join in. And 25 years later the group now consists of 30 members aged from six to 70 with a recent addition of South American dance.

NEW MEMBERS DO NOT NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE, JUST THE ENTHUSIASM TO JOIN IN AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS Assistant director, Kody Roberts, has been a member for nine years, starting at seven years old. He said: “My grandma joined the group following a workshop held at her workplace. I was desperate to go and once I saw them playing, I had to be part of it and haven’t stopped since. This year we have played at a number of local events including

A recent addition to the group is dance classes led by instructor Danny Henry. Danny is a previous Brazilian Carnival winner and his energetic style guarantees fun even for the owners of two left feet. You can join in with his sessions every Friday too. Melissa Cook joined the group in May after seeing the band perform at a local event. “I absolutely loved the drumming and really wanted to join,” she said, “and after changing jobs, I had the time to join the Friday night practice. For me, it’s three hours of mindfulness, bashing out all the stress of the week to set

me up for the weekend. It’s like a family – everyone is so welcoming.” The drumming also encompasses cultures from around the world and includes bhangra, drum and bass and even House music. Kody said: “We love to embrace the different styles from around the globe and fuse it together. It also offers an opportunity to learn about different cultures and how their music moves them. Next year, our director, Emma, will be going to the carnival in Brazil and bringing back her findings to share will us all.”

WE LOVE TO EMBRACE THE DIFFERENT STYLES FROM AROUND THE GLOBE AND FUSE IT TOGETHER As well as busking to raise money for their chosen charity this year, Chorley Help the Homeless, you can catch the band in action at the Chorley Christmas lights switch on Sunday 19th November in the town’s centre. Kody added: “SambAfriq is a great group for people to be a part of not only for the drumming and dancing, but for the friendly community we have created. If anyone is interested in joining us, please come down on Friday evening at the Lancaster Way Community Centre where a warm welcome awaits.” n SambAfriq Lancaster Way Community Centre Buckshaw Village Preston PR7 7LJ Sambafriq
