ROLL UP, ROLL UP!

Introducing Blackpool’s newest attraction, Showtown offers an immersive experience that captures the spirit of Blackpool and will make you see the town in a whole new light as Alma Stewart discovers

It has been nine years in the making, but at last, Blackpool has opened the first museum in its history. But this is not just any museum. This is a story of the ‘Las Vegas of the North’ in all its glittering glory. Here you can discover the stories

of the comedians, dancers, acrobats and characters who turned the resort into the home of show business.

Showtown, the museum of fun and entertainment located on the Golden Mile, is operated and managed by the Blackpool Heritage and Museum Trust with the Chair of Trustees, Spencer Phillips, bringing his wealth of knowledge from 30 years in the entertainments industry.

His career has seen him hold senior leadership positions with, amongst others, Ticketmaster, Thomson Holidays, International Cruise and Excursions, Really Useful Theatres Group (now LW Theatres) and TCAT. Spencer said: “Showtown is the first museum in Blackpool and the first

venue to celebrate all the genres of fun the town has delivered over so many years. Of course, dancing has been one of the main attractions in Blackpool and also the art of magic. The Illuminations are world renowned, and the stories of elephants being taken for a bath in the sea can only be associated with Blackpool!”

Spencer’s wife, who comes from the North West, has fond childhood memories of holidaying in Blackpool so Spencer got to know the town well on subsequent trips.

“I have been back to Blackpool many times over 23 years, long before the latest regeneration started. Blackpool has a long history of being the centre point of the entertainment history. All the major UK acts

have played the resort, whether that be at one of the many theatres and clubs or piers.”

And the list of entertainment greats who have performed at Blackpool is more than impressive. Morecambe and Wise, Judy Garland, Ken Dodd, Will Smith, Cannon and Ball, Peter Kay and Royal Variety Performances have been held at the Opera House. It is probably easier to list the people who haven’t appeared in Blackpool than it is to name all the big names that have graced its stages. Even Frank Sinatra has performed in Blackpool!

THE STORIES OF ELEPHANTS BEING TAKEN FOR A BATH IN THE SEA CAN ONLY BE ASSOCIATED WITH BLACKPOOL

Spencer continued: “For me, my personal heroes who played Blackpool were Morecambe and Wise and Ken Dodd, who I had the pleasure of working with a number of times. Doddy completed the most performances in Blackpool and we are most grateful that The Ken Dodd Charitable Trust has made a generous donation to Showtown. We have created the Sir Ken Dodd Learning Space which will help local young people to reclaim their rich entertainment heritage, develop a genuine sense of pride, and nurture future aspirations in the arts.”

From 1962, Ken topped the bill and held the record for six seasons at the Blackpool Opera House with sell-out shows. In 2011, he also opened the resort’s Comedy Carpet, where his jokes combine with those of a host of other writers and comedians with connections to the town. Morecambe and Wise’s links with Blackpool spanned 36 years with appearances in seven of the town’s theatres and six summer season shows. Eric and Ernie first appeared at the old Palace Theatre in 1940. Frank Sinatra played the Winter Gardens twice – in 1950 and 1953. These huge stars and many more are reflected within the museum’s bright and innovative displays.

Showtown’s home is within the Sands Venue Resort, next door but one to The Blackpool Tower. The museum contains six themed galleries that tell the story of shows, dance, magic, circus, the seaside and of course, the Illuminations.

But that’s not all.

Showtown will also feature a temporary exhibition space with regularly changing exhibitions to complement the main gallery spaces. Together with an amazing programme of events ranging from talks, tours, workshops

and baby and toddler sessions, there is literally something to entertain everyone.

People love Blackpool because the town loves fun and entertainment. Spencer added: “Showtown is a place for people to have a good time – for sheer enjoyment and fun. The cast and crew are part of the experience. There are many ways they engage with the ‘big show’ experience. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing visitors take part in the interactive experiences. Local artists have donated a number of items for display including Linda Nolan and Bobby Ball. Our

featured artists are part of British culture, icons of entertainment. They are in our cultural DNA. It’s hard to believe the audiences stars attracted back in the day. Cannon and Ball commanded a TV audience of 20 million every Saturday night – astounding.”

FUN AND AMUSEMENT SIT AT THE VERY HEART OF OUR INNOVATIVE AND WORLD CLASS MUSEUM WHICH CELEBRATES THIS INCREDIBLE TOWN’S ENTERTAINMENT HISTORY

There are other objects on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum which include Tommy Cooper’s ‘headtwister’ illusion magic trick and costumes worn by Morecambe and Wise. A rare signed black bowler hat which was owned by film and comedy star Stan Laurel will also be on view. Visitors can also enjoy The Blackpool Tower and Winter Gardens Archive – the largest collection of entertainment history in the town exploring its 125-year circus history. As one of the dance capitals in the UK and of course, the host of the annual Blackpool BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing weekend, dance fans can marvel at glittering ballroom dresses on display and find out about how they are made. Visitors will also discover why Blackpool is called the ‘spiritual home of ballroom’.

The Chief Executive of Showtown is Elizabeth Moss who brings a wealth of knowledge from a mix of commercial, cultural and heritage visitor attractions, museums and galleries. She said: “The lights are on, the curtain is up and we can’t wait to welcome people to Showtown. The opening of the museum was a significant moment for us and for Blackpool. Fun and amusement sit at the very heart of our innovative and

world class museum which celebrates this incredible town’s entertainment history and the people who have put it on the map. We have reimagined how a museum should

SHOWTOWN IS A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME – FOR SHEER ENJOYMENT AND FUN

be, through our innovative displays and interactives which sit alongside Blackpool’s own rich collection as well as key loans from international institutions and the performers themselves. These objects will delight and inform while the immersive activities throughout the galleries will allow our visitors to go behind the scenes, experiencing the very best of Blackpool.”

Spencer concluded: “Another great feature is that those living within the Blackpool postcodes can enter for free. The whole team and I look forward to welcoming you all –we think you are going to love it!” n

A Matt Black Contemporary Kitchen

Wes and Zara wanted a shaker style kitchen but when they visited Kitchen Design Centre’s Failsworth showroom they fell in love with the modern displays. The black and graphite colours in one of the displays caught their eye in particular and from that point they decided to have a black modern kitchen.

They also visited two well-known high street kitchen retailers to compare prices and product but found Kitchen Design Centre to be competitive price wise and to have a far superior product. Neither of the other retailers could rival the black options Kitchen Design Centre offered, with Wes and Zara choosing a Black Matt UV Satin finish.

Neither company could match Kitchen Design Centre’s design skills either. They loved Paul’s attention to detail and the time he took to incorporate niche details such as the floating media wall, under cabinet lighting and other quirky details such as the contrasting wood textures throughout.

They love the way the kitchen has transformed their home. Wes explains that everyone’s reaction is the same, “as guests enter the kitchen they’re absolutely blown away and are literally lost for words. They can’t believe the transformation and how amazing it looks.” We love this space and spending time in it. At night it takes on a totally different look and feel thanks to Paul’s clever lighting scheme.

To read more about how we designed this kitchen and to view the video tour of it visit: www.kitchendesigncentre.com

Designer Paul Harrington says, “It was a pleasure working with Wes and Zara to say they are a laid-back couple would be an understatement. This was great from my point of view as it gave me the opportunity to be quite brave with design and colour choice. Most customers would have reservations of using black and wouldn’t be ‘brave’ enough. But Wes and Zara put their faith in me and took the leap and it totally paid off.”

SPRING INTO ACTION

The Webster family at Mowerpower have more than 75 years’ experience and knowledge to support all your gardening equipment needs, writes Gail Bailey. Photography: Michael Porter

With spring just around the corner our thoughts begin to drift to longer days and time spent entertaining friends and family in the garden: “We specialise in horticulture and arboriculture equipment, supplies and service,” says David Webster of Mowerpower. “Ensuring that your mower and equipment is maintained and in working order in time for spring, means you are ready to go as soon as the grass is ready to grow!”

Employing a team of mechanics across their two, state-of-the-art workshops Mowerpower serves both professional and domestic customers: “We offer a full range of garden equipment and tools along with a vast stock of spare parts,” says David. “We are also an

approved servicing agent for many of the leading manufacturers.

Some of those manufacturers include EGO whose Power Plus battery-operated products

ENSURING THAT YOUR MOWER AND EQUIPMENT IS MAINTAINED AND IN WORKING ORDER IN TIME FOR SPRING, MEANS YOU ARE READY TO GO AS SOON AS THE GRASS IS READY TO GROW!

have the benefit of one battery fitting multiple tools. David explains: “The EGO power battery has an innovative design to maximise cooling, which means it’s cleaner, quieter and safer for the environment, and as there are no emissions and less vibration it’s safer for the user too. An added bonus is that the batteries are interchangeable across the entire EGO cordless range – giving complete flexibility for every job, and as the batteries go up in size, so does the power capacity and run time.” Battery-powered, ride-on mowers such

as those made by EGO & Stiga, also mean no trips to the petrol station carrying heavy tanks of fuel – much kinder to your back, and also means more time to relax and admire your lawn!

With advancements in technology robotic mowers continue to gain in popularity and Mowerpower stocks a number of ranges including the popular Stiga: “The GPS navigation assists the robotic lawn mower and helps it cut the lawn evenly. It helps the machine find the most efficient way to cut

the grass to obtain optimum results, using the least energy possible,” explains David. “Due to their design and operating system, they are significantly quieter than petrol or electric lawnmowers. In fact, they are so quiet you’ll hardly notice them!”

For most people a key advantage of using a robotic lawnmower is the time it saves –you can be taking care of other things while it takes care of the lawn maintenance: “Mowing the lawn can be physically demanding,” adds David. “So, using a robotic machine helps many of our customers continue to care for their garden but also care for themselves.

WHETHER WE USE OUR GARDENS FOR AL FRESCO DINING, ENTERTAINING OR SIMPLY AS A SPACE TO RELAX AND UNWIND, UP TO DATE EQUIPMENT, EXPERTLY MAINTAINED, MAKES THE WORK EASIER

They regularly cut the grass, even while you are away, resulting in better turf health and a lush green lawn, making it harder for weeds to take. Perfect!”

In the last few years many of us have started to view our gardens and outside spaces as another room and keeping it neat, tidy and stylish is key for our enjoyment: “Whether we use our gardens for al fresco dining, entertaining or simply as a space to relax and unwind, up to date equipment, expertly maintained, makes the work easier,” adds David.

There is no greater endorsement for high quality work and customer service than customer recommendations and as one recent reviewer said: “A really helpful member of

staff was the difference between me making my purchase or not, very knowledgeable, extremely polite and not in any way pushy. I wouldn’t go anywhere else for my gardening tools as Mowerpower have always given a first rate, personal service and have a huge range of tools and machinery to choose from.” n

Margaret were present to mark the occasion,” says John.

Indeed, Crofts’ master mason spent 40 years on the site and drove the crane which laid the first foundation stone in the cathedral.

Both during and after the Second World War, Crofts were involved in a wide range of industrial re-construction work along with being engaged in opencast mining and the construction of wartime airfields: “The company, ever since its inception, has always been ready to adopt the very best in engineering techniques,” John adds.

Moving with design technology and development led to the company adding home improvements to their portfolio of work and specialising in windows, doors and conservatories. With rigid PVC window frames being introduced from the continent in the early 1970s this was the next natural way for the company to evolve: “It is diversification and readiness to adapt and respond that is very much central to our core business today,” explains John.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE

2024 is a year of celebration for Croft Conservatories. Gail Bailey chats to John and Alli Croft about building on the success of 150 years in business

Thomas Croft and Sons began in 1874 when founder Thomas completed his apprenticeship as a bricklayer and then began his own business from a terraced house in Canute Street, Preston: “My great-great-grandfather’s philosophy has been passed down through the generations and is simple,” explains John Croft. “To maintain the highest standards on every job he undertook, whether it was a large or small project. And this is something we absolutely maintain today.”

As the business developed both Thomas’ sons joined the company: “The first 50 years of the family business reflected the rapid growth of industry in the whole of the North West,” John adds. “Building cotton mills and engineering factories became a specialism of Thomas Croft and Sons, and their reputation grew – and with it much larger commissions.”

As there was more and more factories and mills there was also more chimneys, and their expertise in building tall chimney stacks became unrivalled – building 27 in Preston alone.

1934 saw Crofts commissioned to transform Blackburn Parish Church into a cathedral: “Having been interrupted by the war and some planning restrictions, the first of three phases was completed in 1965 and both the Archbishop of York and HRH Princess

John’s father David, who is about to turn 86 and having retired some time ago, still maintains a keen interest in the business and its continued success.

John says: “My dad qualified in Civil Engineering at the University of Liverpool, and I went on to attend the same university, graduating in Construction Management. And as we now have our son Sam join the business after studying Real Estate Management at Oxford Brooke University, it is very special

to have fourth, fifth and sixth generations continuing the legacy set a century-and-a-half ago. Sam is instrumental in bringing fresh ideas and new thinking to Croft.”

The diversification has been further demonstrated recently with the introduction of Croft Pods in 2020: “The introduction of pods and garden buildings has been a great success story for the Croft business and is an expansion of our focus on eco-living and work and life changes,” explains John.

“The pods and garden rooms are used as home offices, home gyms, yoga studios, salons or simply as extra space to entertain family and friends.”

There continues to be a working pod on display at Holden Clough Nurseries, Boltonby-Bowland.

Johns’ wife Alli has joined the business more recently to complete the family unit and is already well known in the area having worked in the Ribble Valley for 35 years as a designer: “It’s lovely to be working so closely with John and Sam in the business with my focus on design and new products, and with the three of us all passionate about continuing the Croft family ethos of quality and customer care,” says Alli.

John, Alli and Sam now have plans underway as to how the business will celebrate this extra special year. Alli says: “We have lots of ideas on how we will mark our 150-year anniversary and will be celebrating with our customers, old and new.” n

MY GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER’S PHILOSOPHY HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN THROUGH THE GENERATIONS AND IS SIMPLE – TO MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST STANDARDS ON EVERY JOB HE UNDERTOOK, WHETHER IT WAS A LARGE OR SMALL PROJECT. AND THIS IS SOMETHING WE ABSOLUTELY MAINTAIN TODAY

INSPIRED BY NATURE

Sophie Allport is proud to announce the launch of her first capsule collection of paint colours made by bCorp certified COAT Paints

Launched last month, a carefully curated compilation of 12 paint shades has been custom-made specifically for home and lifestyle brand Sophie Allport. Each colour can be found in Sophie’s nature-inspired watercolour designs and features classic neutrals, delicate pastels and bold navy, red and khaki accents.

Founder and Creative Director, Sophie says: “As with our iconic designs, we wanted to produce a paint collection that would draw on the natural beauty of the great outdoors and help to bring the outside in. The result

is a palette that is a celebration of colour, inspired by nature. These shades will work in any home and are timeless in their longevity.”

Known for using the highest grade of ingredients to produce heavily pigmented shades, which offer excellent coverage and depth of colour, COAT Paints was an obvious partner:

“Not only is the quality exceptional, but we also felt there was a real synergy between us. Honesty, simplicity and doing our best for the environment are all central to both our core beliefs,” adds Sophie.

The entire Sophie Allport range is:

• Solvent-free and almost odourless, thanks to the low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content

• Water-based

• Certified child and pet safe (EN71-3)

• Vegan

• Each tin of paint is made to order and produced in the UK

As with COAT’s own range, the Sophie Allport collection also has 100 per cent accurate peel-and-stick swatches, which means less waste, less mess and the flexibility to try out colours on different walls.

HONESTY, SIMPLICITY AND DOING OUR BEST FOR THE ENVIRONMENT ARE ALL CENTRAL TO OUR CORE BELIEFS

The introduction of the paint collection follows on from the brand’s first furniture pieces launched last summer with more to follow this year with the addition of outdoor furniture.

Sophie continues: “We want to create a destination where customers can easily shop for every room in the home. Whether it be for the printed linens we’re well known for, timeless furniture that is built to last, or finding the perfect paint colour which ties the whole room together.

“We want to make turning your house into a home simple and effortless – a place to shop where you can trust that we’ve thought about how everything works together so that you don’t have to.” n

THE PERFECT CHOICE…

Bannister Hall is a premier retailer of Millboard, a revolutionary decking that transforms outside spaces

Easter is typically the time that many of us start thinking about spending time in our gardens and outside space. Lighter evenings and longer, warmer days signal that spring is finally around the corner and is usually the incentive we need to embark on any landscaping works. Many of us spend far too much time ‘on’ our gardens rather than ‘in’ them so its vitally important that our outside space suits our own individual lifestyles. Any time outdoors and being at one with nature is good for our mental health and ideal for reinvigorating the senses when taking a break from working from home. So, irrespective of whether your outside space is in a rural or a more urban setting, having designated areas to be able to relax, read, eat and enjoy will no doubt be top of everyone’s ‘must-have’ list.

Bannister Hall Nursery & Landscaping Materials Centre is now a premier retailer of the revolutionary, virtually natural, wood

decking by Millboard, which offers the perfect solution for any commercial or residential outdoor project.

Operating for more than two decades, Bannister Hall is a family-run business, dedicated to environmentally ethical business practices and to providing a first-rate customer service. Eco-friendly and of exceptional quality, there is a natural synergy with the Millboard brand whose products align perfectly with this ethos, as Alan Lovell, MD at Bannister Hall Ltd, explains: “Millboard products are highly innovative and truly superior to other types of decking in terms of durability, variety and quality. The range will sit perfectly alongside our new Spanish porcelain tiles and natural stone paving ranges within our landscaping store. Millboard truly has the beauty of natural wood but without the maintenance downside.”

Bannister Hall grow, source and deliver the very best quality in hedging, specimen trees, shrubs and plants, all at a fraction of the cost of garden centre prices. As the North West’s premier single-source supplier of soft and hard landscaping materials, it is also

a source for porcelain and a wide range of natural stone paving. For Bannister Hall, becoming a Millboard retailer significantly enhances the company’s impressive qualityled, product portfolio.

SO WHY CHOOSE MILLBOARD?

• It’s resistant to algae, unlike wood, there is no protein content to assist algae growth within the boards.

• It’s also environmentally friendly as the base materials have low impact on global warming.

• Millboard is hygienic as it has a non-porous surface that is easy to clean for spills and deposits.

• It has UV and weathering stability and has been tested in most weathers and temperatures so remains UV stable.

• The boards are slip resistant with a high grip surface which is much safer than wood, especially in the wet.

• It’s lightweight making it easy to handle and install.

• Millboard is low maintenance and resists stains from food or drinks spills and algae growth.

It benefits from lost-head fixing – Durafix fixings are virtually hidden beneath the unique Lastane surface.

• Millboard is moulded from real oak – not extruded like most composites.

• It doesn’t warp or rot like real wood.

• It’s splinter free – no wood content means absolutely no splinters.

• Millboard has a low carbon footprint – it’s independently and UKAS accredited to the ISO 14064-1 Verified Carbon Footprint Assurance mark.

ONE MATERIAL MANY APPLICATIONS

Millboard cladding and decking is incredibly versatile not just from a design perspective but also in helping solve common landscaping problems.

Aesthetics – designers can use one material for a number of purposes which results in a unified look without the need to source alternative materials. Built-in seating, planters and even dining tables and pergolas are just a few examples of how Millboard can be used.

homes

Wet gardens have limitations in that other materials such as stone, concrete and natural wood can be become slippery when wet. Millboard products contain no wood and consequently isn’t susceptible to rotting or warping – it’s also highly slip resistant. Sloping gardens present specific design challenges, decking offers an easier and often, a more economical alternative to extensive groundworks and excavation.

SELECTION AND VISUALISATION

Choosing your Millboard decking is a significant decision and one that you will want to get right. At Bannister Hall, the team makes it easy with free samples sent to your home and a wide range of Millboard decking to view and choose in-store. Bannister Hall can also arrange ‘approved expert’ installation of all Millboard products. n

“With more and more houses being built, we are finding a huge demand for instant evergreen plants to disguise over-looking properties. We are also finding a greater demand for more established plants generally.”

Whilst Newgate Nurseries still grows most of its own plants on site, Michael has started sourcing extra-large specimens from around Europe. “We source many of our instant hedging stock from Belgium and Holland, whilst all other specimens are grown in Tuscany.

Alisa Bowen is the creative director of Inside Studio, offering a personal and professional interior design service carried out by a talented team delivering unique designs. Here Alisa explains why hiring an interior designer is so important when creating your dream home.

Alisa, can you tell us about some of your most recent projects and any exciting ones coming up in 2024?

We entered 2024 with some incredible, bespoke homes breaking ground, which we have been working on from the early days of conception. Considering every detail early on ensures homes are completely customised with no detail overlooked. Among other projects, we are working on renovations to a Grade II listed house and a Victorian property with a barn conversion, where we are gifted with beautiful original features.

If someone is thinking of bringing an interior designer on board at what stage in a renovation should this be?

If you are building a house or planning a renovation which involves extending or

Where do you get inspiration from?

At times we seek inspiration actively, by taking time out of the office to visit showrooms and trade shows. Other times, inspiration hits us unexpectedly! Our ideas develop and grow as we work as a team and inspire each other. Ultimately, we are inspired by our clients, their uniqueness and their vision; combined with our creativity, expertise and wider knowledge beautiful results are achieved! Any particular interiors trends coming up in 2024?

We are so pleased to see this year that the ‘trends’ in fact align with our timeless design ethos. Interiors which are warm and inviting, soft yet balanced, textured, interesting and calm. Natural materials such as travertine have made a big come back, as well as woods such as walnut. n

We often joke it may feel like an interrogation! However, it is important for us to get to know our clients, to understand how the home needs to serve them and their family. We take time to listen to preferences, to learn about their journey, to visit the site and understand the architecture of the house. We ask detailed 41

NO COMPROMISE

Choose the right range cooker to take you from dainty choux buns right through to a full roast dinner, with no drop in performance

When you choose the perfect range cooker the proof really will be in the pudding. Over time, myths around range cookers have built up that simply don’t apply to many of the models you can buy today.

Traditional range cookers have evolved to meet the demands of the modern kitchen. Make sure to do your research to find the one that’s perfect for you and your lifestyle.

Call in to chat with expert Nick Astley at Fuelmizas in Ribchester, your local Esse retailer, where there are Esse electric and woodburning options on display.

Did you know there are electric models available that can be programmed on a timer to run in sync with your family? You might opt to have it up to temperature ready for you coming in from work each evening, and for a porridge to start the day or a hot pot at weekends.

These are available without a flue, so you don’t even need a chimney! Chef Dominique Ashford at Dale House Kitchen and B&B in the Forest of Bowland constantly puts ESSE’s 1000 X electric range cooker through its paces without any drop in power and performance, and yet it uses minimal energy.

Modern range cookers offer more flexibility than ever before. Why not choose one with a dual hotplate? There is an earthy satisfaction

in using a traditional cast iron hob, sliding your saucepan across from the boiling point to find the perfect rolling simmer. Combine this with the most efficient hob technology available, an induction zone and you have two very different styles of cooking at your fingertips, simply choose the one to suit your mood – or your recipe!

If you’re looking for an electric model, ask

ESSE’S ELECTRIC RANGE COOKERS HEAT UP IN MINUTES, SO YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT TURNING THEM OFF WHEN THEY’RE NOT IN USE

Nick at Fuelmizas, how long it takes to heat up for cooking and what the typical running costs are.

ESSE’s electric range cookers heat up in minutes, so you don’t need to worry about turning them off when they’re not in use. They average around £1.40 per day to run. Not bad, to say the hustle and bustle of your home will centre around this cast iron range cooker for years to come!

Not all ovens are created equal – be sure to find out how they work. ESSE ovens, for example, benefit from unrivalled surround heat technology. This means that cakes and desserts will rise evenly without turning or switching shelves, and you can even cook bread or pastry placed directly on the bottom of the oven.

The possibilities are virtually endless. With the choice of electric or wood and on trend colour options, speak to Fuelmizas who are renowned for their expertise and faultless customer service. n

In addition to stocking your garden with wildlife friendly plants, other top jobs for gardeners this month include:

• Pruning bush and climbing roses –remember to cut out dead or diseased stems and spindly or crossing stems, keep cuts to 5mm above a bud sloping downwards and cut to an outward-facing bud.

• Planting shallots, onion sets and early potatoes. Onions are such a versatile vegetable – they feature in so many recipes and growing your own means you’ll always have them to hand.

• Planting summer-flowering bulbs. Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers or borders, especially daffodils, snowdrops and tulips in spring. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow. n

SPRING INTO SUMMER

This month brings some sunny days to tempt gardeners back outside and we have all been looking forward to spring

March is the month for sowing seeds and getting the garden ready for the summer months ahead.

It’s also the perfect time for a mini makeover project and creating a sunny wildflower border is something that even the most novice gardener can take on. Wildflowers are easy to grow and a sunny border will attract pollinators and birds. The smallest area can look attractive and benefit wildlife, so don’t overlook that tiny patch of lawn that is never used, or pots on the patio that could do with a new look.

Keep in mind that wildflowers do not like too rich a compost – they prefer poor soil with few nutrients. Make sure you read the seed packet to find out how much

seed to sow for the size of your plot and, as wildflower seeds can be on the small side, mix them with a bit of sand as it makes distributing them easier. Once scattered water gently and keep the soil damp until the seeds have germinated.

KEEP IN MIND THAT WILDFLOWERS DO NOT LIKE TOO RICH A COMPOST – THEY PREFER POOR SOIL

In the mix of wildflower seeds you select, think about including some poppy seeds. The California poppy is widely grown by wildlife gardeners for its ability to provide pollen for bees and hoverflies. It’s also perfect for including in a vegetable garden as a companion plant – especially for vulnerable varieties such as broad beans – because hoverflies love eating aphids. The bright orange flowers complement the rich variety of greens found in leafy crops and salad vegetables, but California poppies also come in pink, white and yellow.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY:

Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden.

March is likely to have bright sun, gales, rain, hail, snow, ice and often all on the same day. But, whatever the weather, spring is here. It is a busy month. Winter work has to be urgently completed and spring work begun. There are seeds to be sown and seedlings pricked out, deciduous pruning and planting to be completed, borders to be dug and mulched, herbaceous plants to be lifted and divided.

QUIET LUXURY

A recent film is the inspiration behind a new ‘old money’ trend in the world of interior design

The rise of ‘old money’ interiors continues to flourish thanks to the movie Saltburn. Also called ‘quiet luxury’, this type of design refers to the sartorial preferences typically associated with the old money set and interior designers love this look for its timeless elegance, simplicity and neutral appeal.

Award-winning design studio, Black and Milk have recently been working on a variety of interiors that showcase this ‘stealth wealth’ style and a recent project, Talbot Residence, is a clear example of how to channel this trend.

An Edwardian home within Highgate, the project’s narrative is one of the most interesting in their portfolio.

Their main objective was to ensure that the Scottish family’s personality was infused throughout the property and tailored towards their lifestyle, most notably allowing the new design to work cohesively with the existing canvas.

Unique features of the property include:

The introduction of ‘his’ and ‘her’ sitting rooms

The moody blue hues of the gentleman’s lounge set as a perfect backdrop for evoking the grandeur of a cigar lounge, with more playful, expressive touches. On the other hand, the lady’s lounge is a serene oasis that provides the perfect hang-out for coffee dates and socials.

Country style kitchen

A bespoke kitchen, island and hidden breakfast area designed by Black and Milk incorporate richer materials to add a layer of warmth to the family’s open-plan dining area. To keep the design cohesive with the front of the house, traditional backsplash tiles were implemented to the modern design of the kitchen. An impressive gold leaf-based table anchors the centre of the dining area while a soft, napkin-like pendant sits above, softening the overall look and feel.

A cinema room

Hidden away within the lounge area, sits a cinema room. The walls are draped and upholstered in tartan fabric panelling to provide sound installation and pay heritage to the client’s Scottish roots. n blackandmilk.co.uk

SUSTAINABLE FASHION, ETHICAL STYLE S

In this latest fashion column, fashion historian Scott William Schiavone explores the history of sustainability through a fashion lens

ustainability has become something of a buzz word and in recent years, the fashion industry has undergone a transformative shift towards reflecting a growing awareness of environmental and social issues.

The history of sustainable fashion however, spans back hundreds of years. While the 18th and 19th centuries are not typically associated with the contemporary sustainability movement, there were aspects of resourcefulness and environmental awareness during these periods that can be viewed as early precursors to sustainable practices.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, clothing and textiles were valuable commodities and individuals would repair, alter and repurpose garments to extend their lifespan. During this time, clothing was predominantly handmade

by skilled artisans and local seamstresses. Communities often had their own textile and garment industries, fostering a more sustainable, self-sufficient approach.

COMMUNITIES OFTEN HAD THEIR OWN TEXTILE AND GARMENT INDUSTRIES, FOSTERING A MORE SUSTAINABLE, SELF-SUFFICIENT APPROACH

In the collection at the Harris, we have an amazing 18th century gown made from the finest Spitalfields silk. The fabric of the dress is brocaded silk and woven with sprigs of tulips, narcissi, gilly flowers and cornflowers. The cloth dates to the 1740s but the style and cut of the dress is typical of the 1760s. Because of the expensive nature of cloth, it was

very common for dresses to be unpicked and re-sewn into new styles as fashions changed.

Until the 20th century, fabrics were primarily sourced from natural fibres like cotton, wool and linen. The use of natural fibres aligned with sustainability principles, as these materials were biodegradable and had a lower environmental impact compared to synthetic alternatives that became widely used during the 20th century.

While the terminology and explicit focus on sustainability were not prevalent during these historical periods, there were elements of conscientious living and resourcefulness that share common ground with contemporary sustainable practices.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS GAINED POPULARITY OFFERING DESIGNERS MORE CHOICES TO CREATE ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE COLLECTIONS

The early 20th century witnessed a variety of sustainable practices driven by necessity, particularly during times of war and economic hardship. The two World Wars had a profound impact on fashion and consumption as rationing systems that restricted the use of certain materials, including silk and wool, were implemented. As a response, individuals became adept at making do with what they had. One notable example of resourcefulness during this time was the repurposing of parachute silk for wedding dresses. The UK Government also promoted a ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign which encouraged people to repair and repurpose clothing rather than discarding and buying new.

This resourcefulness laid a foundation for later sustainability movements by demonstrating the importance of conscious consumption and waste reduction. The 21st century brought significant advancements in technology, providing the fashion industry with innovative solutions to minimise its environmental footprint. Sustainable materials gained popularity

offering designers more choices to create environmentally responsible collections.

As we move forward, sustainable fashion continues to evolve. Circular fashion, second-hand markets and clothing upcycling contribute to a more circular economy, minimising the environmental impact of fast fashion.

From its early roots in environmental consciousness to the contemporary focus

on ethical practices and circular economy, the fashion industry has come a long way. As consumers increasingly prioritise sustainability, the future holds the promise of a fashion industry that values both style and ethical responsibility, reflecting a positive and necessary evolution in our global approach to fashion. n

ALWAYS IN FASHION

Is your wardrobe spring-ready, or fed up with dark and drab winter woollies? Fifth generation owner of clothing boutique Novello, Hannah Deuchars, gives Kate Bowyer a sneak peek at the new season’s highlights.

Photography: Michael Porter

When most shops on the high street seem to be the same, boring chain stores, the refreshing personal service, quality designs and unique finds you’re assured to find at Novello ensures it and its customers, stand out from the crowd.

Founded in 1914, its fresh collections from the finest British and international clothing designs and brands draw fashion and quality savvy shoppers from across Lancashire to the heart of Fishergate.

For owner Hannah, clothing is stitched into her family tree: “Novello was opened 110 years ago as a milliner by my great-great grandmother, Clara Fisher, before expanding

into fine outfits, what we might regard as ‘Sunday best’. My mum, Bridget, still works here with me, so it truly is a family business.

“From the 1960s onwards, we gained a reputation for showcasing the best clothing brands from around the world, which we continue to do today. Our passion is for evolving with the times, sourcing the best designers to give our customers a selection they won’t find anywhere, pairing exquisite design and individual touches with quality put-it-on-and-feel-fantastic comfort.”

THEY COMMISSION

ORIGINAL ARTISTS FROM ACROSS THE WORLD, THEN PRINT THE DESIGNS ONTO BEAUTIFULLY TAILORED CLOTHING

Looking around, brightly colourful curated collections are already catching my eye. Signature brands include Masai, Robell, Joseph Ribkoff, Marble, Barbara Lebek, Olsen, Betty Barclay, Gerry Weber, Dolcezza, Grizas, Peruzzi, Gardeur, Gollehaug and Just White, to name but a few. So what’s hot for warming spring days?

“People are really wanting to brighten things up from winter’s neutrals and darks, so we’re showcasing vibrant spring shades and patterns for a pop of colour and fun,” says Hannah. “Like Marble, a 21st century Scottish design company known for their complementing colour tones, perfect for providing multiple options from a capsule wardrobe.

“Using the very best fabrics, design and

fit, they create comfy, casual, every-day and timeless pieces which fit like a dream – like their colourful jeans, which naturally fit and flatter women of all ages, shape, and sizes.”

My eye is caught by some striking print dresses, bags and scarves. “That’s Dolcezza’s ‘Simply Art’ collection,” says Hannah. “They commission original artists from across the world, then print the designs onto beautifully tailored clothing.

“Their botanical, floral, tropical, abstract, landscape and subject designs are a real fusion of art and fashion that you won’t see anywhere else. We’re finding their blue, seascape and

‘brushstroke’ prints are especially appealing to customers for spring.”

Hannah is also continuing the Novello practice of keeping things fresh by introducing new brands and lines each season. Hot on the rails for spring 2024, I spot the soft pastel colours of German brand Bianca and White Stuff’s holiday-ready flowing patterns, partnering with Novello for the first time.

CUSTOMERS BENEFIT FROM A FRIENDLY 360-DEGREE EXPERIENCE, MUCH CLOSER TO A COMPLEMENTARY PERSONAL SHOPPER

With a longstanding nine-strong team led by Hannah and her mother Bridget, customers benefit from not just top-quality fashion and fitting expertise, but a friendly 360-degree experience much closer to a complementary personal shopper than lone browsing and guesswork.

With a vibrant website, customers further

afield can now view and purchase that special must-have. “It’s not just distance shoppers who love the website,” says Hannah. “As soon as eagle-eyed local customers spot new lines, seasons or brands online, they head in to try them on!”

Another way Novello goes over and above for its customers, those in the PR postcode area get Hannah’s uniquely personal, free delivery service, started when lockdown prevented people from shopping in person.

“It kept me connected with our lovely

customers, even if it was a wave through the window,” she explains, “Benefiting both sides, it’s a service I’ve carried on with. Many people get into town far less these days, for a variety of reasons, although we’re very lucky to have lots of loyal customers and new ones discovering us, both instore and online.”

Gearing up for some special 110th anniversary celebrations this summer, step into Novello to discover sensational spring and summer 2024 designs too good to even reach the wardrobe! n

CLOSER TO NATURE

Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature, are revolutionising dentistry and here in the Ribble Valley, one forward-thinking practice is one of the leading pioneers of this technique

Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adopted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth.

Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as

Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”

AVOIDING ROOT CANALS

“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.

These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.

PREDICTABLE OUTCOMES AND PAIN-FREE LONGERLASTING TEETH

Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration. Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”

These restorative materials that mimic nature, are not only perfect for aesthetically restoring teeth but they also help preserve and strengthen the natural tooth structure.

SCIENCE-BACKED DENTAL TREATMENT

Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and the whole clinical team understand the science, or what we call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The systematic steps

take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.

IMPROVED AESTHETICS

“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz.

“We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally different concept to what we have seen previously.”

Adopting the latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available to them, the dentists at Renovo are pioneering in

their unique approach.

“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something

WE GET OPTIMAL RESULTS WITH ZERO TOOTH REMOVAL AND THAT’S WHY THE BIOMIMETIC APPROACH IS SO POPULAR

we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.

“It’s the way dentistry should be done –to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”

ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS

For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal.”

While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures: “From a cosmetic point of view we can improve without having to compromise, which is a very powerful concept.

“With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist.

“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a different level.”

HEALTHIER TEETH HEALTHIER YOU

By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health.

“What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.” n

FOR THE LOVE OF EMMA

Having tragically lost his wife at the age of only 49, Michael Gregory has created the Orange Foundation to help and support others living with cancer

Though very much in its infancy, the Orange Foundation has big plans to help people with a cancer diagnosis get support when they need it most.

The story begins in the late 1990s when Michael met Emma Aindow, students at the University of Central Lancashire – Emma studying law and Michael, PR and marketing. Family life soon began when Emma became a mum to Oliver and later, Laurence and daughter, Imogen. The family settled in Hutton, just outside Preston.

Emma, originally from Hesketh Bank, was an incredible ambassador for the vulnerable especially as their second son Laurence was born with Fragile X syndrome, a lifelong condition which can cause a wide range of difficulties with learning, emotional, social, behavioural, language and attentional problems.

Together with her horse Henry, Emma was also passionate about fitness. She was a fell runner, endurance horse rider and even completed the Bob Graham Round – the 66 mile, 27,000ft circuit of 42 of the highest peaks in the Lake District – all to be achieved within 24 hours. Emma loved to challenge herself and push boundaries.

It was a devastating shock then, that such a fit and healthy woman could be diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer at only 45 years old. Michael said: “You are suddenly catapulted into the cancer world that is all new and confusing. We knew we were fortunate because of private health insurance and the tenacity to ask questions and push back on some information. Because of this, we had some excellent care delivered by some excellent healthcare professionals. But not everyone is able to process all the information or question their full range of options. Emma was a force of nature and knew something must be done to help those who don’t have a support system around them. Emma was given six months

to live but went on to live four years more. She made every minute count.

“We were in the hospital one day and we noticed an older lady sitting on her own. After starting a conversation, we discovered that she had no family and was going to an empty home after her treatment. So many people must be living with cancer on their own. These are exactly the people the charity aims to help – the people that may not get the support they need.”

ORANGE WAS HER FAVOURITE COLOUR AND IT IS FITTING THAT ORANGE ALSO SIGNIFIES ENERGY, POSITIVITY AND OPTIMISM, FIRE AND COURAGE, JUST LIKE HER PERSONALITY

The four years of treatment was gruelling at times and the couple found themselves a different specialist hospitals and facilities across the North West as symptoms changed. Emma, described by her friends as a ‘tornado of positivity’, kept her sense of humour throughout: “Emma was extremely positive,” continued Michael, “and although she inevitable had her down days, her humour got her through. One time, she had to have an operation in the December and then spend time in the Intensive Care Unit at Blackburn

Hospital. I was told that the ward manager would contact me if there were any problems. I was at work one day when I got a call from the unit and with heart racing and dread growing, tentatively answered the phone. The message was from Emma – ‘Please can you buy a Christmas Radio Times?’”

Emma passed away on 30th December 2022. “Orange was her favourite colour and it is fitting that orange also signifies energy, positivity and optimism, fire and courage, just like her personality. Our family decided we need to do something in her memory and help others in similar situations,” Michael added.

The Orange Foundation was registered with the Fundraising Regulator in November 2023 and its ambitions are built on five segments of support: Fund diagnostics, scans or consultations that will help speed up the delivery of plans or treatment itself, contribute to cancer treatment, which isn’t always readily available on the NHS or to people who don’t have private medical insurance, provide the patient and family members with talking therapies, fund cosmetic treatments, accessories or surgery and provide patient advocacy services.

Michael explained: “So for example, someone’s hair loss may affect how they feel about themselves so we can buy them hairpieces or fund other cosmetic services. Talking therapy is really important and not always immediately available, so we’ll fund a course of counselling sessions. We also work with Patient Advocate which offers a range of support and navigation of the NHS system, by fully qualified and experienced staff.

“If you are on a low income or a veteran with an existing diagnosis, you can apply to the Foundation for help. Grants are currently capped at £2,000 but this will hopefully increase along with our donators and fundraising efforts.”

If you would like to help support local people living with cancer, or need support yourself, please visit the website and look out for further information on the Foundation’s first charity ball on 25th October. The Masquerade Ball will be held at Preston North End’s Invincibles’ Lounge.

“Emma would be overwhelmed by the creation of the charity,” Michael concluded. “She hated fuss or attention, but she would be incredibly proud that charity will be able to support those who need it most.” n

MAKING THE MOST OF LATER LIFE

We all want to enjoy a long and healthy life as we get older, we need to be mindful of the changes that ageing can bring so we can try to be as healthy and active as possible

As American author Mark Twain said: “Do not complain about growing old. It is a privilege denied to many.” However, there is no shame in needing help as we age and fortunately, there are many services that provide help and support.

There is a wealth of advice about ageing. Some of the main age-related topics from the NHS include:

EXCERCISE

Regular exercise can help reduce the impact of several diseases. Regular exercise can also improve low mood and memory, improve sleep, reduce arthritis-related pain and prevent falls and fractures. In fact, taking regular exercise is one of the best things you can do to remain independent.

FOOD AND DRINK

A good range of foods in your diet with five portions of fruit and vegetables each day will

ensure the body is getting plenty of nutrients and vitamins. Fluid intake is important, so drinking water daily, along with other drinks, is advised.

THERE IS NO SHAME IN NEEDING HELP AS WE AGE AND FORTUNATELY, THERE ARE MANY SERVICES THAT PROVIDE HELP AND SUPPORT

MENTAL WELLBEING

Good mental wellbeing is important for all of us. Here are some ideas to help or improve your mental wellbeing:

• Start a conversation – communication is key to wellbeing and we all respond to a friendly face.

• Make time for friends. Meet up for a chat or invite people over for a cup of tea.

Chat on the phone. Keep in touch especially if meeting in person is difficult.

• Be computer savvy. There are many ways to connect with others online and of course a wealth of information at your fingertips.

• Get involved. There are tons of local groups who welcome new members.

• Make a plan. Make sure there is something to look forward to each day.

• Can you help others? Volunteering can be a great way to stay involved and meet new people.

• Befriending services – there are many volunteers and charities that offer a friendly ear.

LOOK AFTER YOUR BRAIN

What’s good for our body is good for the brain. There are some simple things we can do. These include:

• Maintain a healthy weight.

• Not drinking too much alcohol.

• Not smoking.

• Keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level.

• Getting enough sleep. Have a daytime nap if you need to.

• Keeping socially active.

• Learn new things, complete puzzles and crosswords and get out and about.

If you are encountering any struggles with daily life and need extra help, many services can support you. Support can include just help with shopping or light housework right up to dementia and respite care.

THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE

With cycling continuing to grow in popularity, an established charity ride centred around the Ribble Valley is the perfect opportunity to enjoy wonderful countryside and help raise funds. Kate Bowyer visits the team at Ribble Cycles, whose bikes, expertise and partnership are gearing up for the event

Founded in Preston in 1897, Ribble Cycles is one of the oldest cycling brands in the world. The combination of the very latest technology, paired with years’ of experience, enthusiasm and exemplary service, sets this company (like its bikes) firmly ahead of the pack.

Entering their flagship Clitheroe showroom, I’m met by Europe’s largest indoor 4K video

display, showcasing Ribble’s road, gravel, hybrid and electric bikes being put through their paces.

As customers try out the newest models, Ribble’s commercial director, David Stacey, reveals their involvement with the Ribble Valley Ride.

“Organised by Accrington and Clitheroe Rotary Clubs, it’s a fantastic event for all abilities, which takes in some sensational scenery through the heart of the Ribble Valley.

Now in its ninth year, the funds raised will go to Rosemere Cancer Foundation, which we are thrilled to be able to support.

“We’ve advised and supported many of our participating customers over the years, and I had a wonderful time taking part last year with my family. Seeing how much the organisers and volunteers put into the event, the joy that riders get from participating, and the real difference the funds raised can make, we decided to get involved to help publicise and scale up the event.”

Not only are Ribble Cycles major partners of this year’s ride, which takes place on

Sunday 9th June, all entrants will automatically qualify for a chance to win a prestige Ribble bike worth £3,000. Signing up at ribblevalleyride.org, riders choose from the easy 25-mile ‘Enthusiast’ ride through idyllic Ribble Valley scenery, the tough, hilly 50-mile ‘Expert’ route through the upper Ribble Valley into the Dales, or the 75-mile ‘Elite’ challenge winding through the undulating Bowland Fells.

Seeing me, a fair-weather pedaller pale a little at the prospect, David is quick to reassure: “Such a well-organised event will be enjoyable and inclusive for everyone, with a really fun, family friendly atmosphere. While no route will be completely flat, e-bikes are very welcome, all routes will be well signed and marshalled, with regular feed-stops and aid stations along the way.

“Chip timings and full classified results will be available to all – good news for competitive challengers.

“It really is great value for an event, charging from just £20 entry for the family-friendly ‘Enthusiast’ route, and there’s discounted ‘family’ tickets too.”

Ribble Cycles will be providing expert technical support along the routes, with riders enjoying superior refuelling at the regular food and hydration stops (included in the entry fees), thanks to homemade treats baked and served by Rotary Club volunteers.

Event founder Bill Honeywell, from Clitheroe Rotary Club said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Ribble to increase the profile of this year’s ride and attract cyclists from further afield to experience the delights of this beautiful corner of rural Lancashire.”

With entries open until Thursday 6th June, Jamie Burrow, Ribble’s head of design and development, shares some expert tips on preparation over the next two months: “Now the weather’s better, getting out on the road two or three times a week would be ideal,

THE RIBBLE VALLEY RIDE TAKES IN MUCH OF THE COUNTRYSIDE WHERE WE RESEARCH, DESIGN AND TEST OUR BIKES

especially if you’re considering the Expert or Elite routes. Ensure your bike’s in good shape, with a professional service – if that’s not your area of expertise, come and chat to us especially if it’s time for a new road, hybrid or e-bike.”

And on the day? “You can get hot very quickly going uphill, and cold just as quickly in the wind or while stopped, so carry a few layers including a waterproof and suncream. Carrying a multi-tool and puncture repair kit or spare inner tube can get you back on the road quicker than waiting for assistance.

“Bring some food and drink in case you need it, but, unless you’re an experienced cyclist comfortable with refuelling on the go, take advantage of the feed stations for proper food en route and a chance to stretch out. It’ll be a really fun day, so enjoy it!”

Having spent the day watching customers being expertly measured for their bike, given good advice, test riding bikes, or selecting a custom colour and finish from Ribble’s exclusive colour wheel, I’m seriously considering giving this a go, starting my cycling journey with a Ribble bike.

“The Ribble Valley Ride takes in much of the countryside where we research, design and test our bikes and we are so blessed to have some of the best and most beautiful cycling landscapes in the country,” concludes David. “We just want to encourage people to come out in support of a great cause, and enjoy a fantastic and memorable day out.” n

SO MUCH MORE THAN THE 19TH HOLE

Sometimes your new favourite venue can be right under your nose. For refreshingly welcoming all-day dining and socialising in relaxed comfort, Kate Bowyer discovers you need to look no further afield than the new-look Allamby’s Brasserie & Bar

If you think you know Shaw Hill – think again. That is the opinion spreading among residents of Chorley and surrounding areas. Local landmark, the heritage 18-hole golf course is gearing up to celebrate its centenary next year, while the spa hotel has built a reputation for welcoming, pampering and relaxing its guests.

But the secret to Shaw Hill’s longevity and enduring popularity is its forward-looking focus, reflecting the changing lifestyles and

tastes of its patrons and region. Taking the best of their experience, hospitality and staff skills, the site has just unveiled a brand-new public venue for eating, meeting, drinking, dining, socialising and relaxing.

Arriving at Allamby’s Brasserie & Bar, named after legendary golfer and architect Laurence Allamby, who designed the original course in 1925, it’s clear this is no surface revamp, but a deep and refreshing transformation.

THE SECRET TO SHAW HILL’S LONGEVITY AND ENDURING POPULARITY IS ITS FORWARD-LOOKING FOCUS, REFLECTING THE CHANGING LIFESTYLES AND TASTES OF ITS PATRONS AND REGION

Fully open to the general public, the deeptoned wooden floors and clean, warm tones complement the historic building’s elegant Georgian proportions. Warmly welcoming, a choice of comfortably upholstered seating nooks offer the perfect backdrop for socialising from day to night.

Set yourself up for the day with the

brand-new brunch menu, served daily from 10.30am until noon, from full English and vegetarian breakfast favourites to sweet treat dropped pancakes and Danish pastries with Fairtrade tea or coffee. Now the rightly famed Shaw Hill afternoon teas are set off against the perfect backdrop.

Through lunchtime and afternoon to dusk and beyond, the bar boasts a fantastic selection of wines, spirits, draught and bottled beer, liqueurs and champagne. Allamby’s friendly, welcoming and practised team are able to recommend the perfect beverage to complement the brand-new brasserie menu (or turn afternoon tea sparkling).

The expertly mixed and temptingly extensive cocktail and alcohol-fee “mocktail” menu confirms Allamby’s for the next night out with my girlfriends – or the mums’ group, or my work colleagues. Anyone welcome if it means I can indulge in another rhubarb garden spritz!

Luckily it’s just a few steps into the accompanying dining room. With the same stylish comfort and calmly welcoming attendance as the bar, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy casual or occasion dining with all the perks of fine dining service. The menu is full of delicious, unfussy dishes – infusing the best British produce with a fresh twist on classic French cuisine.

I’m impressed with its breadth, definitely plenty to tempt every palate into repeat visits. Served from midday until 8.30pm, I love the choice: mushrooms on toast, Nicoise salad, or pesto gnocchi for lunchtime, maybe? Salmon and scallops, lamb rump, or cauliflower steak, as day turns to evening? Or simply pick whatever takes your fancy from many more delicious choices, including warm focaccia and olive nibbles, perfect for accompanying that cocktail and chat.

Family owned and run by the Stokes Tyrer family for more than 25 years, their experience shows – from the superb cuisine to the smooth service and relaxed atmosphere. With this transformative upgrade, the whole place feels incredibly fresh and welcoming to the whole surrounding community, as well as hotel guests and golfers.

WITH THIS TRANSFORMATIVE UPGRADE, THE WHOLE PLACE FEELS INCREDIBLY FRESH AND WELCOMING TO THE WHOLE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS HOTEL GUESTS AND GOLFERS

Looking around the varied groups gathered around dining tables, towering cake stands, or long windows framing 192 rolling acre views, it’s clear Allamby’s transformation is attracting an enthusiastic and wide-ranging diversity of guests. I see catch-up chatters, walkers, couples and families, the sounds of conversation mingling with the clinking of coffee cups, wine, cocktail and beer glasses.

As I regretfully head homewards, I hear

one diner ask their companion: “So, where shall we meet next time?” Not a heartbeat later, they both chorus: “Here!”

Count me in too. n

LET’S TAKE A WALK

Ansdell has its own lovely shops and wonderful Ansdell in Bloom displays. Fairhaven Lake has a long and interesting history and has recently been restored. Author Steve Garrill details a lovely walk around the area

Ansdell and Fairhaven Lake:

2.4 miles

1 Turn left from the railway station [wheelchair/pushchair turn right from the station and then left along Clifton Drive to start at instruction 3]. Coffee and snacks are usually available from Ansdell Institute on your left (community café).

2 Take the first right down Rossall Road. At the end turn right onto Ansdell Road North. Continue over the railway footbridge. Cross over carefully to the left-hand side of the road. The footbridge was the site of Ansdell’s Gate, the first railway station in Ansdell.

3 Cross over carefully and continue. Cross over at the traffic lights. The White Church (white glazed brick) is a Grade II listed building with a beautiful interior and stained-glass windows.

4 Turn right along the newly constructed sea front around Granny’s Bay. Granny’s Bay is officially known as Stanner Bank. Stanner

is the local word for shingle banks. It is reputedly called Granny’s Bay because Lady Clifton brought her grandchildren here.

5 Take the path to the right of the ice-cream kiosk to drop down to Fairhaven Lake and left at the public toilets. Before Fairhaven Lake was developed this was an area of sand dunes, rough grass and wild tidal sands called Starr Hills. Fairhaven Lake is a saltwater lake and a very important wildlife habitat – you must visit the RSPB centre!

6 Continue around the lake to reach the Japanese Gardens. The Japanese Gardens were designed and built in 1925 by Thomas Mawson, a leading landscape architect. Fairhaven at War: The park remained

open during both World Wars for leisure and entertainment for the public, and a recreational facility for service personnel.

7 Continue around the lake to reach the Spitfire memorial. This is a 2012 replica of a MkV Spitfire in memory of allied airmen. Please take time to read all of the fascinating, and poignant, information boards.

8 Continue around the lake to pass the café to reach the RSPB. The building housing the RSPB Centre was built in 1901 as a workshop and accommodation for the boatman. The RSPB does fantastic work here on the Ribble Estuary and throughout the UK.

9 Continue around the lake and back up the ramp. Cross the road and go up Marine Drive. Turn left, cross via the zebra crossing and back up Woodlands Road to the railway station. n

There are many more local walks, and a lot of fascinating local history, in ‘Walks from the South Fylde Line’ by Steve Garrill.

Rentcharges – why are they so problematic and why wasn’t I told about it?

The answer to the second of those questions will likely depend on when you purchased the property and what type of property you purchased. The perception of rentcharges changed dramatically following the case of Roberts v Lawton [2016] UKUT 395.

A rentcharge is an annual sum paid by the owner of freehold land to a third party. Not to be confused with the rent in a lease payable from tenant to landlord. Rentcharges often secure very modest sums – less than £15, typically. Whether a rentcharge had been paid prior to Roberts v Lawton wasn’t something a property lawyer would have lost too much sleep over. That perception was shattered following that case. The case is a few years old, but it is likely that many landowners are only finding out about any

UNDERSTANDING RENTCHARGES

Following a law case, the perception of rentcharges changed dramatically. Many landowners are only finding out about any potential issues when they come to sell the affected property, writes property lawyer Stephen Warren of Forbes

potential issues now when they come to sell the affected property.

The reason Roberts v Lawton was so important is that it served as a somewhat brutal reminder of the draconian teeth that rentcharges had when it came to their enforceability. Under s121 of the Law of Property Act 1925, if a rentcharge has been unpaid for more than 40 days then the owner of the rentcharge can either enter into possession of the land and take the income from it until the amount due

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? THAT DEPENDS ON WHETHER THE PROPERTY IS SUBJECT TO A HISTORIC OR ESTATE RENTCHARGE

is paid or they are able to grant themselves a long lease over the property which will secure repayment of the rentcharge arrears and the cost of taking the enforcement action. These options are available whether the rentcharge was formally demanded or not. Following the case, many lenders viewed rentcharges in a different light with many now requiring a deed of variation to remove any possible enforcement under s121.

What can you do about it? That depends on whether the property is subject to a historic or estate rentcharge. Most people will understand estate rentcharges better as ‘service charge’ estate rentcharges. The advice of a property lawyer is crucial as not all payments for service charges on a freehold property will mean it is a rentcharge. It is vital to understand:

a) if your property is subject to a rentcharge and if so,

b) what type of rentcharge it is. The majority of properties that have either type of rentcharge are likely to be sellable and mortgageable, but it may require some work on your part. Speak to a property lawyer to find out what you need to do but, in the meantime, if you know you have a rentcharge and you know who to pay it to, then simply pay it. It just isn’t worth not doing so. n

Perhaps you are an amateur photographer or social media whizz who can help get a fledging charity off the ground or you play the piano and can spare an hour a week to brighten the lives of older people, or you have a passion for local history and would like to work as a greeter in a local historic hall?

NEW HIGH TECH STORAGE SOLUTIONS

With a number of personal and business storage solutions, Norbreck Self Storage is a highly secure, discreet and rural solution for any storage requirement.

Photography: Roger Moore

Conveniently located between Kirkham and Poulton and just off the M55, you will find West View Farm, home to Norbreck Self Storage. The high-security technology begins at the iron gates with entry only accessible via an app, fob or speaker to the sleek new reception office.

Managing Director, Philip Halhead, a third-generation dairy farmer and owner of Norbreck Genetics, bought West View Farm in April 2023, its acreage housing a number of outbuildings, a farmhouse and of course, open land. He explained: “I was looking to diversify my existing business and saw the potential here in Greenhalgh. Straight away we started demolition and conversions to the existing buildings to currently offer storage spaces between 20 and 200 square feet in size.”

THE BEAUTY OF THIS RURAL LOCATION IS THAT  THERE IS NO FIGHTING THROUGH TRAFFIC OR NEEDING TO NAVIGATE LIFTS  AS IS OFTEN THE CASE WITH URBAN STORAGE LOCATIONS

Storage remains one of the UK’s best-kept secrets. Unlike in America, where nearly every household has easy access to self-storage units for storing personal belongings or decluttering their homes, UK consumers have yet to fully grasp the advantages of utilising storage units.

The beauty of this rural location is that there is no fighting through traffic or needing to navigate lifts as is often the case with urban storage locations. “We can offer complete privacy,” said Phil, “where clients can come anytime between 7am and 9pm and just drop off, collect or spend time in their unit

as they wish. We are always willing to lend a hand or advise our customers should they need us. They can even bring the dog for a walk in our fields!”

When it comes to security and technology, Norbreck Self Storage are leading the way in the North West. An app will open the gate and doors to the storage units, ANPR cameras are mounted around the site. Both Phil and operations manager, Sally King, will talk customers through the easy-to-use tech and entry fobs are also available if preferred.

The differing types of storage units can safely store a wide variety of items depending on the best conditions required to house them. There are climate-controlled units available and the square footage can store a minimum of a few boxes right up to the contents of a four bedroom house. Business storage is also available here, providing a convenient space to store stock and equipment including hard or soft goods and even warehouse solutions.

Phil continued: “We offer both short and long term contracts, conveniently commissioned on a monthly basis and bookable online or over the phone. It is a high-quality, bespoke service.” n

HISTORIC AND LUXURIOUS

Nestled within the sprawling grounds of Ribby Hall Village lies a collection of distinct ‘Signature Properties’, blending history with luxury

From The Farm House’s timeless charm to the Coach House’s rustic allure, each promises an unforgettable stay.

And now, with newly renovated farm buildings on Browns Lane joining the collection, we take a look back at the origins of these properties.

Tucked away in the picturesque embrace of Wrea Green lies Browns Farm, a storied estate whose roots trace back centuries. Previously common land, great change came

in the sixteenth century when much of the land was enclosed resulting in a patchwork of fields that still exists today.

By the eighteenth century, the Manor of Ribby with Wrea was in the possession of Alexander Rigby, a descendant of Colonel Alexander Rigby, who fought alongside Oliver Cromwell in the Civil War. It was at this time that a humble dwelling and some land was leased to James Brown and the history of Browns Farm begins.

Over the next 100 years, the farm and land were leased to many farming families with ownership changing hands to the trustees of Ribby with Wrea School as a method of earning an income to sustain the work of a charity to educate local children.

In 1871, the original dwelling was demolished and with the help of talented

architect Henry Littler – the brains behind County Hall in Preston and Whittingham Hospital – the beautiful Farm House we know today took its current place.

Fast forward 150 years and in 2019 Ribby Hall Village took ownership of Browns Farm and work began to develop the existing buildings. The Farm House was the first to be beautifully renovated and most recently The Granary, The Dairy, The Stables, and The Hay Barn have all been sensitively rebuilt to be enjoyed by many families for years to come.

FROM THE FARM HOUSE’S TIMELESS CHARM TO THE COACH HOUSE’S RUSTIC ALLURE, EACH PROMISES AN UNFORGETTABLE STAY

These new ‘Signature Properties’ are like love letters to Browns Farm’s history, blending old-world charm with modern comfort. Walking through the doors, greeted by a warm embrace of exposed beams and character, one thing is clear – Browns Farm has entered a new chapter in this timeless tale of renewal and rejuvenation.

Today, each of Ribby Hall’s ‘Signature Properties’ are available to book for large groups looking to make memories and relax with friends or family. Each property is complete with a private hot tub and boasts luxurious outdoor space. n

GOOD FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET

Sustainable or ‘responsible’ travel is the buzzword of the moment, but it’s so much more than the latest top trend. Travel counsellor

Day by day we’re waking up to the fact that we should be as kind to our planet as we are to our pocket, ensuring that the locations and communities we love to visit across the globe are preserved for generations to come.

As a Travel Counsellor, I run my business as sustainably as possible from my home office, or from any location that allows my customers to keep in touch with me. This care and attention I show to my customers also informs how I craft the travel experiences they crave, with many travellers now keen to ensure the enduring impact of their tourism has a positive impact for the planet.

As with most day-to-day activities, it’s no secret that taking a trip creates carbon emissions. There are ways and means to reduce this impact, however, such as reducing your footprint by opting to train travel where possible or offsetting with schemes such as Travel Counsellors’ partnership with Trees4Travel, who oversee a wealth of carbon reducing projects across the globe, including planting more trees to absorb CO2 . I have also personally signed my business

up to this scheme too.

Happily, all manner of accommodation options now support the idea of making greener choices, and to make the decision easier. Travel Counsellors’ bespoke booking platform enables me to search through hundreds of accommodations badged with

our ‘Green Leaf’ logo – this means that they meet special criteria certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, highlighting the fact that they’re working to support their community and cultural heritage, reduce negative impact on the local environment,

and plan for their futures with sustainability front of mind.

Travellers can support the people in the communities they visit by shopping and eating at locally owned businesses. Not only does this benefit the locals, but all of our customer feedback suggests that you’ll enjoy a truer taste of the location and make more authentic memories. What’s more, taking part in these experiences helps create and maintain job opportunities in the local area.

HAPPILY, ALL MANNER OF ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS NOW SUPPORT THE IDEA OF MAKING GREENER CHOICES, AND TO MAKE THE DECISION EASIER

Similarly, we encourage the conservation of natural habitats and their wildlife, with the best way to view wild animals being when they are living freely. All of my bookings adhere to Travel Counsellors’ animal welfare policy, acting as an essential guide to ensure I create the best wildlife viewing experiences for you, whilst also ensuring the safety and welfare of any animals you may encounter along the way.

In summary, through education, knowledgesharing and showing care to people and the planet, we CAN travel responsibly. n

PRESTON EVENTS TO WOW THE CROWDS

This spring, it’s time to shake off the winter blues and join in with some exciting events in Preston, with fun for all the family

Preston’s 2024 event schedule kicks off in style with a themed event within the Market Hall. It will be an Easter extravaganza at Preston Markets on Saturday 30th March, with lots in store for all the family. Why not try your hand at the Alice in Wonderland themed treasure hunt, with a free prize for everyone who completes it? While hunting for clues on the stalls, keep your eyes peeled for amazing stilt-walkers, The Queen of Hearts and Alice in Wonderland herself, or maybe take a break and have your very own Tea Party at one of Preston’s welcoming cafes… you’ll soon be grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

Egg Rolling is a huge Easter tradition in Preston, stretching back more than 150 years. It takes place on Avenham and Miller Parks in the city centre every Easter Monday (1st April). Each year brings an eclectic mix of workshops, street theatre and live music.

NO VISIT TO PRESTON’S EGG ROLLING IS COMPLETE WITHOUT BRINGING YOUR OWN EASTER EGG AND ROLLING IT DOWN THE HILL WITH HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE

Past events have seen magicians, a giant hippopotamus, arts and crafts, unusual storytelling, explorers and much more.

Although every Easter brings a different programme of events, you can guarantee that the traditional Easter Bonnet making workshop and Easter Bonnet competition will always feature, with the best hats winning a prize.

However you choose to spend your day, no visit to Preston’s Egg Rolling is complete without bringing your own Easter egg and rolling it down the hill with hundreds of other people. You can find a quiet spot and roll with the family or join in with the official egg rolls on the hour.

It may sound a bit wacky and exciting, but that’s because it is! It definitely will be your most memorable Easter Monday excursion!

Preston’s annual Caribbean Carnival celebrates the rich heritage of the Caribbean communities across Preston and regularly attracts tens of thousands of people to the city each year to witness the flamboyant procession. People of all ages and communities join together to bring the city to life with an array of colours, spectacular costumes, live music and dancing that you just can’t help joining in with.

Preston Caribbean Carnival is gearing up for its 50th anniversary this year, so promises to be even bigger and better than ever before. Taking place at Moor Park over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, this year’s event will include live performances, sound systems, Caribbean and other food stalls plus a range of children’s activities. Join in the fun between 24th and 26th May. n

AND SELLING YOUR HOME PLANNING PERMISSION

Renovations can be part and parcel of home ownership, but what happens when it comes to selling up? Graeme Booth, Associate Partner and Conveyancing Solicitor at Farleys explains

When selling a property, homeowners are asked to complete a Property Information Form (TA6) which provides crucial information about the property covering a vast array of areas from property boundaries to any works that have been carried out that would require planning permission and/or Building Regulations approval.

If you’ve completed any work which required planning permission or compliance with Building Regulations, these should be detailed on the TA6 and you should try to provide the relevant documentation to your conveyancer at the earliest opportunity so as not to slow the process down. If you have carried out works for which planning permission or building regulation approval should have been obtained but was not, it is important you are honest on the TA6 to avoid legal action from the buyer

further down the line if they discover you’ve withheld information.

In instances where planning permission has been granted but you cannot locate the decision notice, most councils now make such documents available to download through their website. Not all councils have records of Building Regulation completion certification on their websites so duplicates can be a little bit more difficult to obtain.

YOU SHOULD ENSURE WHEN HAVING SUCH WORKS CARRIED OUT THAT THE CONTRACTOR IS REGISTERED

For certain works covered by Building Regulations though, certificates may be issued by Competent Person Schemes instead of local authorities, such as in the case of gas, oil, electrical and solid fuel burner installations, and window/door replacement. You should ensure when having such works carried out that the contractor is registered with a scheme and, upon completion of the work, they make the necessary submission to that scheme to issue a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

The first port of call if you do not know if the relevant documentation was issued should be the contractors who completed the work. If the contractors have gone out of business, you aren’t able to access the information by any other means, or if you know the work was completed without planning permission/

Building Regulation certification, your conveyancer will likely offer an indemnity insurance policy to the buyer’s conveyancers to cover any financial losses the buyer may incur in the future in the event the lack of planning permission or Building Regulation certification results in enforcement action by the local authority. This will of course come at a cost, so if you are in the midst of renovations, it’s always worth planning ahead and ensuring the contractors issue you with the necessary documentation.

One important point to bear in mind in relation to indemnity insurance is that if you have any doubts about whether planning permission or Building Regulations approval should have been obtained for works completed at the property, you should not approach the local authority as this could alert them to the absence of the relevant permission or approval, making it significantly harder to obtain indemnity insurance cover.

Another thing to consider when selling your property is whether you have planning permission in place which you never got around to completing. For example, if you have permission in place for a loft conversion or the building of an extension, this could add value to your property and provide a more attractive prospect for a buyer so be sure to mention it to your agent when you are discussing listing the property. n

FUN IN THE FYLDE

Tourism and Cultural Services Manager at Fylde Borough Council, Tim Dixon, highlights how to spend the new seasons in the Fylde.

Photography: Mark Liebenberg

Now that we are at last firmly heading into spring, what a time to get out and about in the area. Whether walking along the promenade from St Paul’s at Fairhaven down to Lytham, or along the huge wide open sandy beach in St Annes or perhaps in rural Fylde along the many footpaths, bridleways or stopping off at a village green such as Wrea Green – it’s not quite cricket season yet, but a picnic on the Green watching a game of cricket is so quintessentially British isn’t it?

Lytham Hall is set in 78 acres of mature parkland which are worth exploring all year round. The staff and volunteers there do a fantastic job of keeping the grounds and splendid Hall in fantastic condition and of course, there’s the ever-popular tearoom. There’s the annual Flower Festival 19th to

24th April, knitting workshop on 26th April and a Classic and Performance motor show on 19th May. Just log on to the Lytham Hall website for further information about what’s coming up and things may be subject to change so always check before setting off.

Visit the Lytham Heritage Centre – in April, they are hosting an exhibition by the Blackpool Arts Society, followed by an exhibition of paintings by Steve Bruce. The venue is open six days per week from 10am until 4pm (closed Mondays) and features works of local artists. It is free entry, with donations always welcome. Still in Lytham, check out the packed programme at the Lowther Pavilion Theatre and their events programme via their website: lowtherpavilion.co.uk.

In St Annes, the ever-popular Sounds in the Square return every Wednesday 1-2.30pm

from 1st May to 25th September 2024 and Brass in the Grass returns to Ashton Gardens the first Sunday of every month from May until September – who doesn’t love the sound of a brass band in the park on a beautiful spring or summer day?

Want to treat yourself? There’s the multi-award winning, five-star Cartford Inn overlooking the River Wyre and Bowland Fells with luxurious bedrooms and stunning food and drink using locally sourced ingredients or pamper yourself at Ribby Hall Village. In rural Fylde, the Ship in Elswick has a new seasonal menu which is sure to be popular.

At Fairhaven Lake, the boats return from Easter including the two new swan pedalos. You may have noticed plenty of developments at Fairhaven Lake over the past few years with improvements to the parkland and other work going on behind the scenes to continually improve facilities – you’ll see new access points to the park as well as a great events programme. n discoverfylde.co.uk

SOMETHING SPECIAL

Everything Retreat was quite literally, everything we dreamed of with its luxury lodges set in the tranquil Ribble Valley countryside, writes

uxury can be an over-used word when it comes to selling a holiday or a short break. I’ve been to some places that have eulogised about their luxurious this or luxuriating that and they really haven’t delivered.

However, owner Louise Monk and her team at Everything Retreat, have developed something really special in the hills above the Ribble Valley which certainly befits the term. From the moment we were introduced to our unique lodge by the most welcoming GM Kelly, we realised that this luxury was more than a sales sizzle.

Once we got settled we wasted little time before trying out the top of the range ‘twin-turbo’ (as we christened ours) hot tub. With no children to interrupt proceedings (Everything Retreat is an adult only venue) we could take our time enjoying the finer

things in life.

The welcome drink had fizzed and so, post-plunge we sampled the locally distilled Everything Retreat gin (a collaboration with Preston-based Wild Fox) – all part of the generous welcome. Once we had showered –similarly high powered as the hot-tub jets –and changed, we headed to the resort’s Balance

Bar where we sampled some superb tapas –the meatballs and the chorizo particular favourites for this carnivore’s taste, courtesy of chef Simon, and we were well looked after by Louise and Mandy. There’s no stuck-up, five-star snobbery about this place, the luxury is served up with a smile and a good dollop of northern humour.

THERE IS SOMETHING POWERFULLY RESTFUL AND CONTEMPLATIVE ABOUT THE RETREAT, AWAY FROM THE STRESSES OF CORPORATE LIFE

After a restful night thanks to the oh so comfy mattress, complete with superb cotton sheets and dreamy pillows, we tucked into our breakfast box, which naturally, was full of healthy and yummy locally-sourced morning treats. Once replenished we headed out to make the most of what the Ribble Valley has to offer. After a bracing walk up and down Pendle Hill, where witches and folklore follow every step, we were spoilt for choice for a pub lunch – we settled on the Millstone at Mellor. And we were not disappointed. One of the great

things about the Retreat’s location is the sheer number of superb eating places from great pubs like The Millstone to a special Chinese at Yu and even the Michelin-starred offering at Northcote – all within a 10 minute drive.

We felt like a browse in the afternoon and again we could have driven in all directions and found a smart country town, which would serve our needs. Whalley provided just the right amount of shop action and after my wife had purchased a new pair of boots – from a shop with Whalley and Manchester addresses – we felt we had deserved afternoon tea and another go in the hot tub back at Everything.

POST-PLUNGE WE SAMPLED THE LOCALLY DISTILLED EVERYTHING RETREAT GIN –A COLLABORATION WITH WILD FOX – ALL PART OF THE GENEROUS WELCOME

There is something powerfully restful and contemplative about the Retreat, away from children and the stresses of corporate life, it makes the perfect place to recharge the batteries, both physically and mentally.

It was whilst walking her dog Archie in 2018 that Louise stood in one of the fields, and imagined stunning lodges nestled amongst the beautiful landscape looking out over the valley.

Fast forward six years and after all the design, planning and hard work through the construction period, she now looks around and sees 12 luxury cedar lodges, already weathering into the hillside.

Six of the lodges are individually themed with inspiration being taken from Louise’s favourite places around the world, these form the Unique Collection. The remaining six are designed to complement the beautiful surroundings in which they sit, creating the Signature Collection. We were lucky enough to stay in the Unique ‘Bothy’, Louise’s nod to the Highlands, which brings all the character of a traditional Scottish country lodge,

complete with tartan accessories and dark oak flooring. We took in the spectacular views from the full-length windows with the log burner glowing – though the underfloor heating made it already cosy.

We can’t wait to go back to try a different one next time, perhaps Skála – the Scandi lodge where you step into light, airy and relaxed minimalism. With crisp white walls, cosy blankets and neutral accessories, we’d relax in the understated open-plan living room, which encompasses pale parquet flooring and textured tiles and revel in the Scandinavian charm.

Our two-night stay was not enough, there is so much to do and see, both rural and urban, within a short drive of the Retreat, and as always just when we were feeling more rested and beginning to rejuvenate, we had to depart. Next time we will certainly look to do a Monday to Friday stint, giving us the excuse to bring our Labradoodle. Oh yes, in honour of Archie, all canine companions are most welcome.

But Louise is not stopping here with plans and planning applications in progress. One to create a wonderful space in the original farmhouse for groups of up to 12 and secondly to build a new room giving more space for yoga, pilates and corporate wellbeing sessions.

So, whether it’s a romantic stay for two (or three with dog) or as part of a larger group retreat, there really is luxury for everyone at Everything Retreat. n

CIVIC SOCIETY NEWS

In a regular feature, the Lytham St Annes Civic Society will be sharing news from around the area. This time, the spotlight is on the Lytham Institute

After more than 18 months of careful deliberation to consider representations from community groups and individuals, the Charity Commission has issued its decision on the draft objects for the Lytham Institute charity submitted by Fylde Borough Council.

Lytham Institute belongs to the community – it was built by the people for the people. After its opening in the old Bath St Chapel, funds were soon raised in 1878 to build a new Institute in Clifton Street. In 1898, to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the Duke of Norfolk opened an extension which housed Lytham Library for many years.

The Civic Society restored the commemorative stonework for this. In 1916 the trustees donated the building to the Lytham UDC, forerunners of today’s Fylde Borough Council, on the understanding that they would continue to run it for the people.

Lancashire County Council closed the library in 2016 and the building has remained

in only partial use since then. The Hewitt Lecture Rooms are available for hire and the Lytham Heritage Group’s invaluable reference archive is held there. The Society rents a storage room here too. In 2019, by funding a barrister’s Opinion after pro bono work by David Coupe, the Society succeeded in having the Institute declared a charitable trust, with Fylde Borough Council as sole trustee.

LYTHAM INSTITUTE BELONGS TO THE COMMUNITY – IT WAS BUILT BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE

In 2022, the council submitted revised objectives of the trust to the Charity Commission, who have now published their findings. The Commission has modified the draft objects in two important respects. Firstly, recognising the conflict of interest between Fylde’s role as a Local Authority

and its duty as a charity trustee, the council are advised to appoint independent trustees to manage the charity.

Secondly, as the community groups (Friends of the Institute, Lytham Town Trust, Lytham Heritage Group, LSA Civic Society) had requested, the Lytham Institute building cannot be sold and replaced without Charity Commission consent. As an added protection, such an application cannot be made by the council until a majority of independent trustees are appointed. This decision will help to protect the Lytham Institute as a community asset and open the way for a constructive dialogue with the council to find a financially sustainable use for this historic Grade II Listed building in the centre of the town.

Lytham St Annes Civic Society want to increase the interest in the group. There is much to achieve and member support is crucial. The open meetings at Fylde Rugby Club will give all the existing and new members a voice, so please go along. Further information can be found on the website. n lsacivicsociety.org.uk

MODERNISING FAITH FOR AN ENRICHED EDUCATION

A Jesuit education goes far beyond the school curriculum, teaching values to live by and encouraging pupils to become independent thinkers and global citizens who change the world for the better

Stonyhurst College is extremely proud of its Jesuit heritage that nurtures pupils to become ‘men and women for others’, to develop learning and leadership skills that will take them confidently into the wider world.

The Jesuit Profile also makes the College unique among other Catholic schools –beliefs are put into action by helping others and making the world a better place.

Catherine Crombie, the College’s Director of Christian Formation, explains: “We take pupils of all faiths and none – but all pupils have the same exceptional educational experience.

“A Jesuit education is entirely focused on human excellence in its simplest form. Academic excellence is a core part of this education, but it is very much about the person as a whole.”

Stonyhurst College is the oldest, continuously active Jesuit school in the world, with its origins dating back to the late 16th century,

and it is here that pupils are encouraged to think about the kind of person they want to become, not just their academic capabilities but what they are capable of as a person.

STONYHURST’S JESUIT VALUES TEACH STUDENTS TO ENDEAVOUR TO CHANGE THINGS FOR THE BETTER – TO IMPROVE LIVING AND LEARNING

Whatever career they choose and whatever they experience in life, Stonyhurst’s values encourage pupils to change things for the better – to improve living and learning is the DNA of a Jesuit education.

“This is woven into all aspects of school life,” explains Catherine. “The teachers here strive to understand how each individual learns best. They are interested in each pupil’s capabilities and how we can develop them. We make it our mission to find out what they want to achieve in the world.”

Alongside a first-class academic programme, the focus is very much on enrichment and giving pupils unique opportunities as Stonyhurst continues to excel in shaping individuals to be the best version of themselves, just as the school has been doing successfully for over 400 years: “We go beyond the curriculum in the hope that we spark a pupil’s love of a certain subject or activity.”

The College campus and the facilities available to pupils are vast – there are pitches for rugby, cricket and hockey, a nine-hole golf course, golf simulator and 25m swimming pool, along with netball courts and a full size indoor tennis dome.

Alongside the academic curriculum is also a far-reaching co-curricular programme to inspire pupils to try new experiences, such as altar serving, undertaking environmental projects, and all three Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for the Faith in Action social justice programme.

With pupils from all over the world, Stonyhurst is a multi-cultural community that provides its young people with many and varied opportunities to learn from each other: “We are very lucky to have an internationally diverse pupil body of over 26 different nationalities.”

A recent exchange trip with pupils visiting from a Jesuit school in Uruguay was a huge success: “The exchange was a unique experience for our pupils – they were living and breathing it. They were energised and inspired – a Jesuit education believes that the more direct experiences you have the more you will be inspired and that’s a big part of character formation.”

Within the College are the historic Stonyhurst Museum and Archives – the oldest and one of the largest collections of museum objects and priceless artefacts in the English-speaking world, including the Holy Thorn from Christ’s Crown of Thorns.

The objects and artefacts are frequently used as a backdrop for enrichment learning, where pupils can see, and be inspired by, significant historic items that often link into an academic subject.

WE TAKE PUPILS OF ALL FAITHS AND NONE – BUT ALL PUPILS HAVE THE SAME EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Catherine continues: “A Jesuit education helps pupils to not be limited by the curriculum. They become independent learners and are encouraged to discuss beyond the curriculum –a subject may throw up moral questions so they may veer off topic and teachers allow that. It’s flexible, adaptive and active and encourages a lifelong love of learning.”

While striving for greater knowledge to become the best they can be, the Jesuit profile encourages pupils to look outwards to observe social systems and communities so that they habitually strive to help others: “Social justice is a Jesuit pillar and Stonyhurst pupils, whether they have a faith or not, are called to give service to others.”

The College’s Arrupe Programme has recently seen pupils helping out within the local community, running a coffee stop, helping with a primary school reading programme and wheelchair dancing for youngsters with a high level of additional needs. The Higher Line (Sixth Form) pupils have also visited Lourdes to assist wheelchair-bound pilgrims. The school’s Campion Day sees pupils coming off timetable and embarking on charitable endeavours and discussing social justice issues, as well as attending Mass and enjoying Line (House) competitions: “Pupils have great fun, whether it’s participating in a colour run around the school grounds, or the lip sync battles between year groups that took place

in the evening this year. We come together to celebrate our school – it’s also about school pride and the Stonyhurst community spirit. “We are a global family,” adds Catherine. “According to the Jesuit Profile we show generosity, gratitude and compassion. While education is key, the greater part of what we do is to help young people reach their full potential.” Indeed, the College was rated Excellent in all areas in the most recent ISI report, with particular focus drawn to pupils living a life of purpose and achieving academic excellence alongside spiritual and

emotional growth, while learning to embody the Stonyhurst school motto, ‘Quant je puis’ meaning ‘as much as I can’: “Pupils are encouraged to ask themselves, ‘What more can I do? How can I have a greater impact?’

“That’s what makes Stonyhurst so distinctive among Catholic schools. It’s about getting out into the world and making a difference.” n

The students wore specially designed Mickey Mouse ears in purple and green, Westholme’s signature colours.

AFTER MONTHS OF PREPARATION AND DEDICATION, IT WAS A GREAT FEELING TO FINALLY PERFORM, AND SEE IT ALL COME TOGETHER SO PERFECTLY!

Maisie Banks from Darwen, who is currently in Year 12, was one of the lucky students to take part.

She said: “After months of preparation and dedication, it was a great feeling to finally

perform, and see it all come together so perfectly! Our hard work was recognised as we were asked to lead the parade amongst hundreds of others.

“Being amongst friends in the Disney atmosphere and enjoying fun time in the park was undoubtedly another highlight of this trip. Although we stayed there just a few days, the days were packed full of activities and it was an unforgettable experience.”

Each year Westholme School produces internal shows and concerts showcasing the talents of their students, as well as holding external concerts and events. The events are held in the prestigious Croston Theatre at the Meins Road School and have included many famous productions such as The Sound of Music, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story and most recently Fame.

OUR HARD WORK WAS RECOGNISED AS WE WERE ASKED TO LEAD THE PARADE AMONGST HUNDREDS OF OTHERS

The Croston Theatre, a state-of-the-art facility which provides a real-life theatre experience, is the centre-piece for performing arts and acts as a focal point for rehearsals, as well as the live performances for concerts and productions at Westholme.

The Performing Arts faculty provides a holistic experience for all students offering music, music technology, drama and dance. Students are taught by highly skilled teachers in their discipline and are offered the opportunity to enhance and develop their creative knowledge and performance skills.

Staff are dedicated and go above and beyond to ensure students receive the highest quality of teaching and experiences, including West End workshops, international performance tours and regular theatre trips.

Technical workshops are also provided for students with a fantastic array of guest professionals in Dance, Drama and Music who come in to provide valuable training, experience and knowledge to each subject.

Hot off the heels of having won three National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) awards for Fame and Matilda JR, the school’s performing arts students are now busy with rehearsals for their next big performance – a production of Les Misérables at the Croston Theatre, taking place from 5th - 9th March this year.

Amy Holland, Director of Performing Arts at Westholme School, accompanied the students on the trip.

She said: “The students were both nervous and excited before they went on stage and as they took their spots, it was emotional to see how happy they looked after months of rehearsals for this moment. They made lifelong memories on stage at Disneyland and I felt very proud.

“Staff at Disneyland see thousands of schools and performers each year and they commented that our performance was special – so much so, they asked Westholme to lead the iconic pre-parade, which was such an honour. We would like to give a special thanks to our choreographers – our dance teacher, Mrs Karen Barber and parent and professional Rebecca Atkinson.”

After their performances, the Westholme students and staff had time to enjoy the

Disneyland park, rides and studios, rounding off a memorable trip of a lifetime.

Peter from Preston, is currently in Year 12 at Westholme School. He said: “It was a oncein-a-lifetime experience and I loved every second of it, especially leading the parade which was exhilarating and a real privilege.”

Charlotte from Chorley, also in Year 12, said the appearance was a memorable one.

She added: “Disney really was a once-in-alifetime experience, performing to so many on a professional level and getting to be a part of and lead the parade was something that I will never forget and always look back on with fond memories.” n

Newgate Nurseries in Whitestake is a third-generation business which is still going strong. Owner Michael Cookson explains its success. Photography: Michael Porter

Located in the quiet village of Whitestake at the boundary of the parishes of Farington, Longton and Penwortham, you’ll find the Nurseries on Newgate Lane packed will an extensive array of plants and all of the items required to keep a garden in tip top condition.

“My grandad started the business in the 1930s,” begins Michael, “as a market garden continuing through the Second World War. The business continued until the UK joined the Common Market in the 1970s when suddenly shoppers could buy a Spanish Iceburg lettuce for a much cheaper price than a home grown one, so the business concentrated on ornamental plants instead. But even then, the business prided itself of fantastic customer service.”

TODAY, WE HAVE CUSTOMERS ALL OVER THE PLACE AND COURIER ORDERS FAR AND WIDE PLUS WE ALSO DELIVER THE LARGER TREES AND SHRUBS OURSELVES IN OUR LUTON BOX VAN

As a straight A student, Michael was offered a place at Cambridge University to study law, but turned down the place and instead studied a horticulture degree at Myerscough. Taking a gap year in his studies, Michael worked at a garden centre in the US, loading cars. The more knowledge the employees

had, the more they got paid and so Michael, with his amazing memory, learned about more and more plants: “I returned with such a wide knowledge of different species, it really stood me in good stead,” he said. Michael’s mum Gerry started to make hanging baskets, which the Nurseries are well-known for to this day. “She kept asking my dad for more and more greenhouse space and so we grew many plants from seeds, cuttings and plugs. We also import varieties from Holland, Spain, Italy and so on, to add to the variety of plants we offer. We started just selling to the public, but over the years that has grown to include trade customers too. We have one of the widest ranges of plants in the area now at 10,000. Mum is also still involved in the business on a part time basis.”

During the pandemic, a lot of business went online, a stream of the business that has grown and continues today: “Now, we have customers all over the place,” continued Michael. “We courier orders far and wide plus we also deliver the larger trees and shrubs ourselves in our Luton box van.”

One of the unique selling points of Newgate is the free border design service: “If customers let me have a video and photos of their garden area, we can map it out to scale and suggest a full planting scheme taking into consideration the soil type and amount of sun/shade. If the customer buys the full suggested range, we will offer a discount and the plants can either be planted by the customer of we can come and plant for them.”

And the advice doesn’t stop there: “We are the type of place where customers can pop by for some free advice. For example, they can bring in a struggling plant or leaf from it and we can help diagnose what the problem is,” Michael explained.

The Nurseries offer soft landscaping services and although don’t provide hard landscaping services, Michael and his team have a number of trusted tradesmen that they can refer customers should they need them.

Newgate Nurseries also plants commercial displays for businesses including local restaurants, the Duchy of Lancaster, and a six-year contract with HSBC Bank at the golf British Open. “We have also created gardens at Tatton Park in Cheshire and at the Southport Flower Show,” added Michael.

WE ALSO IMPORT VARIETIES FROM HOLLAND, SPAIN, ITALY AND SO ON, TO ADD TO THE VARIETY OF PLANTS WE OFFER

With three sons of his own, Michael is hoping the business moves on to the fourth generation. “It’s not an easy life,” he said, “but I have to be outside in the fresh air even if it does mean me getting up at 5am each day and working weekends. Both my dad and grandad would be really proud of how the business has grown and thrived as will I if one my sons takes over from me one day.”

An exciting addition to the nurseries this year will be a seasonal shepherd’s hut offering refreshments and snacks, so make sure you pay a visit soon. You will also find turf, compost, bird feed, firewood, pots and planters, bulbs, bedding plants, house plants. So much to choose from and excellent customer service guaranteed! n

AN ICON IN PRINT

Amalgam is proud to be an official licensed partner of Aston Martin, capturing iconic models from the marque in both fine model and art print format

Famous for making the most perfect, large-scale model cars in the world, Amalgam Collection has teamed with artist Alan Thornton to capture some of Aston Martin’s most iconic models in precise, beautiful and deeply crafted prints. The new collection leads with two extraordinary cars, the Aston Martin Valkyrie and DB5.

At the disposal of owners of the most extreme and valuable Aston Martins, who may wish to commission unique collections

of works distilling the beauty of their car into extraordinary pieces of art, Thornton undertakes a very small number of commissions each year.

is unique in its attention to detail, with a focus on creating models that truly capture the style and spirit of each car.

Skilled technique and creativity are essential to every stage of Alan’s art. The first chapter of his creative process takes the real car into the studio, shooting it in high resolution and taking infinite care with the lighting and angles. The outcome is a set of unique photographs, specifically created to meet the technical and artistic disciplines.

The second stage of Alan’s process involves digitally working the image, breaking down the image mechanically into numerous elements and complex dot patterns, that when printed will create the illusion of a full tonal range. Indeed, Alan’s masterful use of the demanding process that he has created for himself, takes the artwork beyond photographic realism to produce hyper-real levels of intensity, depth and vibrancy in the final printed image.

THE COLOURS ARE DEFINED AND MIXED TO REPRESENT EACH ELEMENT OF THE CAR’S PAINT AND MATERIAL FINISHES. THE RESULTING PRINT HAS COLOURS OF GREAT PURITY AND INTENSITY

Each project is defined and quoted on an individual basis and Alan’s deep experience with portrait photography opens the door to the creation of large format prints capturing both car and driver together, a format with exciting potential.

The work of Amalgam’s team of craftspeople

The third and final stage is the printing of unique one-off prints and limited editions employing the traditional hand screen printing process or dye sublimation. In both cases, rather than use a four-colour print process, the colours are defined and mixed to represent each element of the car’s paint and material finishes. For the traditional screen prints the process demands much careful mixing of the inks and the hand pulling of each colour to manage the spread of the dots onto the paper and achieve the desired outcome. n

READY FOR ADVENTURE…

From the outside the bigger and better MINI Countryman has a striking new identity. Inside there is a sense of less is more, but nothing is missing, writes, writes

Agnew.

Photography: Peter Austin

Attempting to improve a car of truly iconic status is, at the very least, a high-risk strategy. Surely safer to leave well alone – if it ain’t broken etc etc.

But MINI hasn’t earned its place at the motoring top table by playing things safe or standing still.

So they have taken the Countryman –a model that has served the brand so successfully – and made it better, much better.

And bigger, much bigger.

In fact, you have to give yourself a p-inch (for those still dealing in old money) when you first set eyes on it!

Hard to believe that the all-new MINI Countryman is only 13cm longer and 6cm taller than its predecessor, for this is a vehicle with a striking new identity and a real presence.

It owns the showroom in a way that is impossible to ignore, demanding attention and drawing you in for closer inspection. And when you do, expect to be blown away. There are no disappointments here. Still the same MINI Countryman in many ways, but so different in others. And so grown up.

Dominant and distinctive with chrome-free design elements, sleek and athletic elegance, but with the unmistakable MINI spirit. Robust and ready for adventure, count on its muscular SUV build whether on or off the beaten track.

No clutter or just-for-the-sake-of-it extras, just the handsome good looks, clean lines and striking appearance as before.

Inside there is definitely a sense of less is more, but nothing is missing.

A host of impressive features include a recycled fabric dashboard and a smaller (heated) steering wheel (to emphasise the go-kart feel) which is wrapped in attractive and sustainable Vescin upholstery, as are the ultra-comfortable seats.

Oh, and not forgetting the truly mind-

blowing OLED display.

This pizza size (240mm), one-of-a-kind, world-first, centre-piece is a genuine takeyour-breath-away stunner, not only looking great but housing everything you need to stay connected.

Serving as an instrument cluster as well as the infotainment and assistance hub, all features can be explored through this one focal point, via intuitive touch or voice control.

YOU CAN EVEN DOWNLOAD YOUR FAVOURITE PHOTO (PARTNER, PET, HOLIDAY SNAP OR WHATEVER) AS A PERSONAL SCREENSAVER AND ENJOY A BACK MASSAGE WHILE SETTING IT UP!

Let your mood transform the look and feel of the cockpit with a choice of eight MINI Experience Modes, each following its own individual creative design, ambient lighting and sound palette. You can even download your favourite photo (partner, pet, holiday snap or whatever) as a personal screensaver and enjoy a back massage while setting it up! A newly-designed toggle bar provides access to everything from parking brake and gears, to MINI Experience Modes, and much more, all within easy reach along with a host of multifunctional controls on the steering wheel.

Across the various models, much of it coming as ‘standard’, are the likes of LED headlights, auto air conditioning, cruise control, parking assistant, heated seats, cameras – including one inside, driver facing –head-up display, panoramic glass sunroof, wireless charging tray, roof rails and automatic tailgate, e-call and teleservices, Harmon Kardon sound system, electric seat adjustment with memory and MINI navigation.

Trust me that is just a brief overview of the selection of goodies provided, depending on the model you choose.

Talking of which – from the entry level ‘C’ (Classic) to the top-of-the-range ‘JCW’ (John Cooper Works), all are powered by lively petrol engines.

The 1.5 litre Classic comes with three cylinders, can zip from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds and deliver 45.6mpg (combined).

The two-litre JCW comes with four cylinders, can fizz from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds and deliver 36.2mpg (combined).

As for the drive? Every bit as good as you anticipate. Although bigger and carrying more of a punch, it remains a fun car, handles superbly, nippy around town and very comfortable on longer journeys.

Power, spontaneity and responsive steering make for an electrifying performance and, on the subject of electric, the new all-electric MINI Countryman is just around the corner.

Generous in size and highly versatile, there is ample room for five long-legged adults and up to 25 per cent more luggage space while ‘comfort access’ means you never need to go rustling to find your keys. This clever car automatically detects and verifies the key in pocket/bag and does the locking and unlocking without troubling you.

The all-new MINI Countryman is certainly a big deal, surely set to be one of the most sought-after cars of 2024.

As for demographic and identifying the perfect owner – well that’s a toughie. Hard to say who is best suited in terms of age, gender or need.

Oh, hang on, I’ve got it. Everyone. n

RACING TO THE TOP

Katie Turner, a young racing driver from the North West, is hoping to put the UK on the top of the podium in a global motorsport competition

Katie Turner, a motorsports engineering foundation degree student at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), is hoping to compete in the NXT Gen Cup, an all-electric junior touring car series –but needs a quick financial boost to get her on the starting grid.

The competition, which will serve as an undercard series for the rapidly growing Formula E World Championship during the 2024 season, will see drivers aged between

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE RACING CARS. I GET SUCH AN INDESCRIBABLE FEELING WHEN I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL

15 and 25 race electric MINI Cooper SEs up to 150 kilometres per hour on tracks in London, Italy, Germany and the world-famous street circuit of Monaco.

The 20-year-old, who last summer was

the only UK driver to compete in Sweden and Germany in the first season of the competition, has her eyes firmly on making it to the start line but needs to raise between €80,000 to €100,000 in sponsorship in the next two months to do so.

Katie, from Bolton, said: “I absolutely love racing cars. I get such an indescribable feeling when I get behind the wheel. It’s thrilling, it’s a huge adrenaline rush and I’m very competitive so I love testing myself against my fellow drivers. To be chosen to drive in this year’s competition is fantastic. The championship is being broadcast to millions around the world and there will be hundreds of thousands of people trackside watching live at race weekends so it’s an incredible opportunity.”

As part of her place in the NXT Gen Cup, the Fernando Alonso fanatic will also get

the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the motorsports industry.

Katie, who works as a part-time administrator at Spa Medica, said: “It’s not only about driving the race car but learning about the engine and the mechanics, the media and marketing sides of the industry and the finances that go into running teams.

“This will not only boost my racing career but will also give me hands-on engineering experience which is crucial to my degree. My degree will really help my racing as to be able to get the maximum out of the car you have to be able to understand how it works.

BEING ABLE TO RACE AND BE IN A CAR IS ALL I THINK ABOUT. I SPEND ALL DAY EVERYDAY AROUND CARS WHETHER IT IS INSTRUCTING, RACING OR THROUGH MY DEGREE

But my racing also helps me with my degree as I spend a lot of time around engineers and mechanics which gives me valuable knowledge I need for my course.”

The former pupil of St Gabriel’s High School, in Bury and Bolton College was brought up watching Top Gear and Wheeler Dealers but only got into racing after passing her driving test: “Nobody in my family has the same racing passion. My dad is really into cars which I grew up around which is how I found my love for the sport. My everyday car is a 2007 MINI one and I would not change him for the world. My dream car in all honesty is not what people expect. I would have a MINI John Cooper Works,” she added. Since then, she has thrown herself into driving full throttle by ice driving in Sweden, being coached on track days with the Formula Woman Academy.

She said: “It’s the best feeling to drive a car

at speed, sliding into corners on some of the best racing circuits in the world. Last year I raced at the world-famous Nurburgring in Germany and was blown away when someone asked for my autograph.

“Despite having such bad luck with mechanical issues on the car, I loved it and want to get back out there and compete with the best young male and female drivers from across the world. Being able to represent women in motorsports is so important for me. Even with the huge push for change for women within the sport. My personal opinion is that I think there is still a huge bias and not a lot has changed for women within the sport. Ultimately with my career, I would love to be a full-time driver. My dream championships would be Formula E and BTCC.”

Katie, who also cites seven times F1 champion Michael Schumacher and former professional racing driver Susie Wolff MBE as idols, hopes to make a step into endurance racing with Citroen C1s.

“My uncle has been a huge help for sponsorships, however I handle all my sponsors and partners myself – mainly as I prefer the more personal approach as you get to build a relationship with them. Raising enough funds will mean everything to me. Being able to race and be in a car is all I think about. I spend all day every day around cars whether it is instructing, racing or through my degree. It is the one thing I am most passionate about. But also raising enough funds will also give me that platform to be able to make a real change for women within the sport.” n

A KARTING SENSATION!

Jayan Prakash is an eight-year-old kart racing sensation whose passion for speed and will to win have catapulted him into the UK karting spotlight

His recent triumphs on the track have not only captivated spectators but also caught the attention of Porsche Centre Preston. So much so that the prestige car retailer has agreed to an exciting new partnership that promises to elevate Jayan’s racing career to even greater heights.

Jayan’s journey from the streets of Cottam to karting glory began aged just five years-old at the local recreational karting track in Euxton. It wasn’t long before he displayed his special talent – he would regularly win when racing against much older children and adults.

In 2023, at the age of seven, Jayan took part in the Global Karting League UK, competing with more than 30 other young UK drivers. He enjoyed podium finishes in all ten rounds he participated in (he was the only driver to

achieve this). He showcased unparalleled skill and tenacity against seasoned competitors. Their age and experience were no problem for Jayan despite some of the other drivers being nearly two years older.

JAYAN’S

JOURNEY

FROM THE STREETS OF COTTAM TO KARTING GLORY BEGAN AGED JUST FIVE YEARS-OLD AT THE LOCAL RECREATIONAL KARTING TRACK IN EUXTON

An end-of-season victory at Whilton Mill near Daventry clinched the UK Bambino National Championship Title. This feat is even more remarkable when you remember it was his first year of competitive karting.

To date, the Bolton School pupil has enjoyed 20 podium finishes in his karting career. This year, Jayan had the option to defend his Bambino class. Instead, he chose to compete in the Cadet Class (age 8-12),

where karts can hit speeds up to 60 mph. He has already enjoyed two Cadet Class podium finishes in January at circuits in Fulbeck in Lincolnshire and Rowrah in Cumbria.

The new partnership highlights Porsche Centre Preston’s commitment to supporting emerging talent in sport and marks another significant step in Jayan’s racing career.

The partnership is supportive in many ways and also serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring young athletes across the region. By investing in Jayan’s future, Porsche Centre Preston underscores its commitment to fostering talent and making a lasting impact within the community.

Tom Fox, managing director of Porsche Centre Preston, is excited to help nurture local talent and, perhaps, even inspire other young sportspeople in the local community.

WITH SUPPORTERS LIKE PORSCHE CENTRE PRESTON BY HIS SIDE, THE POSSIBILITIES ARE LIMITLESS

Tom said: “We partnered with Jayan because we saw a remarkable young talent whose dedication and passion for karting truly stand out. It’s not every day you encounter a young talent with such fearless determination and a clear love for motorsport. We’re excited to partner him on his journey and watch him develop.”

Indeed, Jayan and Porsche Centre Preston’s partnership goes beyond the partnership. It reflects a shared vision of excellence and camaraderie.

“Partnering with young sportspeople is tremendously important for local businesses,” added Tom. “We want to invest in the future of our youth and show them that hard work and dedication can be recognised and rewarded.”

Jayan’s hard work is already reaping the rewards. He has been snapped up by Ambition Motorsport as a team driver for the 2024 season. The team has a history of multiple championship wins. Jayan will compete as one of the youngest drivers in over 30 rounds, including Motorsport UK Club Rounds and National Championships: Cadet Kart Championship and the prestigious British Kart Championship.

Sandeep Prakash, Jayan’s father, is grateful for Porsche Centre Preston’s support at such an exciting time and emphasises the potential impact of the partnership on Jayan’s burgeoning career.

As Jayan embarks on the next chapter of his racing odyssey, his sights set firmly on

the next pulsating race, one thing remains abundantly clear: with supporters like Porsche Centre Preston by his side, the possibilities are limitless.

Sandeep said: “Porsche Centre Preston’s partnership is massively helpful in many ways and a significant vote of confidence in Jayan’s potential. We’re excited to see where this journey takes him.”

Of course, Jayan wouldn’t be the first young Go Kart champion to have ambitions to race at a higher level.

Did someone mention Lewis Hamilton?! Jayan has chosen to race with the number 44 (the same number as his Lewis Hamilton) on his kart, which also features the centre’s Porsche logo.

Sandeep adds: “Jayan loves Lewis Hamilton.

It would be fantastic to see him following in the footsteps of his idol. Lewis is not just a phenomenal racing driver – he shows us all where talent, dedication, and the right support can take you.

“But Jayan is on his own unique journey. What’s most important is that he continues to pursue his passion, enjoy the sport, and develop both his skills and character along the way. Whether he becomes the next Lewis Hamilton or the first Jayan Prakash, we’re all so proud of him and excited to see where it all leads.” n

SUSTAINABLE LEGACY

A small, artisan distillery attributes its huge success to its sustainable, eco-friendly ethos and putting the community at its heart

Aresounding success story when it comes to sustainability, Brindle Distillery was borne out of a family’s wish to use their farmland to create a legacy for future generations.

Having farmed for more than 100 years, the Singleton family decided to diversify back

in 2016 when, after a long day, they began chatting over a gin and tonic, as director Mark Long recalls: “My father-in-law was

WE HAVE AN ANCIENT ARTESIAN AQUIFER ON THE LAND THAT PRODUCES CRYSTAL CLEAR SPRING WATER, WHICH GIVES OUR SPIRITS A REALLY CLEAN TASTE

looking to make use of the land to create something more sustainable than farming, a business that would grow the local economy

and drive tourism in Lancashire – something that would survive long after his time.”

Considering what the family had at their disposal on the farm, they began to develop the idea of setting up a distillery with a commitment to artisanal craftmanship: “We have an ancient artesian aquifer on the land that produces crystal clear spring water, which is perfect for making spirits,” adds Mark.

After a year researching recipes, ingredients and equipment, Brindle Distillery launched their first Signature Cuckoo gin in 2017 –a huge success which is largely down to the eco-friendly methods of making the spirit:

“The spring water is a key ingredient. When our gin comes off the still it is so strong it has to be diluted and that’s where the spring water comes in. It makes up 60 per cent of our gin and when people taste it they recognise what a clean flavour it brings to the product. The way we make our spirits and the natural sustainable ingredients we use all add to it.”

The spring water not only serves as a vital component to the clean taste of the spirits made at the distillery – it also cools and heats the still, affectionately known as Maggie. A wood-burning, eco-friendly bio-mass boiler provides heat for the still’s water jacket, a major factor in creating a premium product.

The bio-mass boiler also heats the distillery too: “We use minimal electricity in the whole process of manufacturing,” adds Mark.

World class botanicals are among the ingredients used and these are sourced from suppliers with the same ethical standards held by the team at Brindle Distillery: “We grow some of our own herbs – we grow the rosemary and thyme that goes into our Cuckoo Solace gin, plus we have honey on-site for our Sunshine gin.”

A collaboration with Simon and Kath Cordingley and the Bee Centre has resulted in the distillery having their own hive:

“We plant wildflowers on the farm which we also use in one of our gins and the honey produced by our bees means we don’t need to use any mass-produced syrups often found in other gins, which ensure Cuckoo is totally natural. Every ingredient contributes to the exceptional taste that sets our spirits apart.”

Reinforcing their commitment to sustainability, three years ago the team at the distillery sourced bespoke new bottles, beautifully etched and made from recycled

glass in Yorkshire: “They are 70 per cent lighter than our previous bottles and Yorkshire was the nearest glassmaker that could make the bottles, which are now used across the range.”

The distillery also offers a ‘refill’ service giving customers the opportunity to bring their empty bottle back to be refilled on site with the customer getting a discount for re-using their bottle.

WE HAVE BUILT A STRONG COMMUNITY AROUND THE DISTILLERY, WHICH IS LOVELY AS IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK

Alongside their award-winning Cuckoo Signature, Sunshine, Solace, Spiced and Supernova gins, the distillery also makes Spring, Supremo, Scrumpy and Seaside vodkas and Sundowner rum, which is aged in old bourbon whisky barrels.

“A few years ago the gin market was oversaturated but it’s beginning to level out and we hope that the cream will rise to the

top,” says Mark. “We have seen fantastic growth, which underpins what we are doing.”

Employing seven full-time, two part-time and 25 casual workers, the team takes great pride in their work and the ethos of the distillery: “Many of our casual staff are students and it’s great to see their confidence grow as they meet our customers.

“We have built a strong community around the distillery, which is lovely as it’s always good to give something back.”

Building a community spirit has also revolved around various experiences including make your own gin workshops, gin tastings and cocktail masterclasses along with events featuring live music in the Cuckoo’s Nest bar as well as Nestival, the first of which was a huge success last year: “We kept the numbers low last year as it was our first but this year it will double. It’s a great community event featuring artisan food, a covered space and local artists performing.” n

Nestival will be held from 2nd - 4th August.

A NOSTALGIC DELIGHT FOR ALL GENERATIONS

Nestled at the edge of Barton, on the A6, Billy Bob’s is more than just a restaurant – it’s an experience

Are you yearning for a taste of the good ol’ days, when poodle skirts and jukeboxes were all the rage?

Whether you’re a grandparent longing for a trip down memory lane or someone simply enchanted by the charm of yesteryear, Billy

Bob’s promises a trip back in time like no other. Stepping through its doors is like stepping into a time machine, with every detail meticulously crafted to evoke the spirit of the 1950s. From the authentic retro décor to the classic jukebox tunes playing in the background, Billy Bob’s offers dining experiences like no other. Have you ever dreamed of dining in an authentic yellow American school bus or on the iconic Coke truck? At Billy Bob’s, these dreams become a reality, adding an extra layer of charm to your visit, every element of Billy Bob’s pays homage to a bygone era.

But it’s not just about the ambiance –Billy Bob’s is also a haven for foodies with a

penchant for nostalgia. Whether you’re craving a hearty breakfast or a satisfying lunch, their menu boasts all the timeless stateside classics that will transport you back to simpler times. While you’ll find the expected diner menu items like burgers, wings and hot dogs, their chefs are more than just cooks – they’re culinary explorers. They’ve

WHETHER YOU’RE CRAVING A HEARTY BREAKFAST OR A SATISFYING LUNCH, THEIR MENU BOASTS ALL THE TIMELESS STATESIDE CLASSICS THAT WILL TRANSPORT YOU BACK TO SIMPLER TIMES

delved deep into the heart of stateside cooking, travelling across the country to learn the secrets of southern-style dishes firsthand. Along the way, they’ve traded stories with seasoned chefs, soaked in flavours and mastered techniques that infuse every dish with authentic taste and soul.

Their dedication shines through in every bite. Take, for instance, the Louisiana Boudin Balls—golden bitesize savoury pork and Arborio rice delights with a dipping pot of homemade Chipotle Mayo that capture the essence of the Deep South. It’s a taste of Louisiana sunshine in every bite. And then there’s the famed Philly Cheesesteak, a masterpiece born from the bustling streets of Philadelphia, perfected on the Billy Bob’s griddle with juicy slices of tender beef, sautéed onion, bell peppers and melted provolone.

But what truly sets Billy Bob’s apart is their commitment to authenticity. They don’t just replicate, they elevate. Picture this: succulent turkey, lovingly smoked in-house in a smoker brought over from Oklahoma, a specialist oven used in the top barbeque houses, which infuses every morsel with rich, smokey goodness, all nestled atop a colourful medley of fresh greens, onion straws, bacon and chives, cranberry dressing and homemade ranch. It’s a testament to their passion for crafting dishes that honour tradition while offering a fresh twist.

And let’s not forget sweet treats from the parlour, where a 1940s soda fountain takes centre stage. Once the focal point of every American main street, these nostalgic fixtures are now a rarity, even in the States, but at

Billy Bob’s, you can experience the magic firsthand. Sip on a sarsaparilla or raspberry lemonade, hand pulled, just like they were back in the day, indulge in stacks of fluffy buttermilk pancakes, topped with your favourite syrups, homemade sauces and fresh fruit, or treat yourself to decadent sundaes.

WHETHER YOU’RE RELIVING CHERISHED MEMORIES OR CREATING NEW ONES, THIS CHARMING DINER PROMISES AN EXPERIENCE THAT’S AS TIMELESS AS IT IS UNFORGETTABLE

With more than 30 flavours of homemade ice cream to choose from, each scoop is a journey into creamy bliss. And let’s not overlook the legendairy shakes, hand spun and served in a stainless malt cup, each sip a reminder of simpler and sweeter times.

But Billy Bob’s isn’t just for the grown-ups. It’s a haven for families spanning generations, offering a playground straight out of childhood

dreams. Imagine stepping into a world where traditionally built wooden structures like a ship, castle, helicopter, ark and more await, offering a new adventure at every visit. Let your little ones’ imaginations run wild as they explore these fantastical settings, embarking on exciting journeys and creating unforgettable memories with you along the way.

And even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the fun doesn’t stop. In the covered barn, the weather can’t spoil the excitement of racing down slides, swinging on rope swings, or soaring through the air on zip lines. It’s a place where laughter echoes and hearts race, where families come together to bond and make memories that will last a lifetime.

So why not gather your family and make a date with nostalgia at Billy Bob’s? Whether you are reliving cherished memories or creating new ones, this charming diner promises an experience that’s as timeless as it is unforgettable. Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere and leave with memories that will last forever. At Billy Bob’s, the past is always present and the joy of yesteryear is just a bite away! n

TOP FIFTY…

This year’s prestigious Estrella Damm list has seen a number of well known establishments gain extensive praise and recognition

The distinguished Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list is always eagerly anticipated by the hospitality industry and this year it included some notable destinations in the Ribble Valley and a little further afield.

The Parkers Arms, the Freemasons, the Angel at Hetton and White Swan at Fence were all placed in the top 30 while the Cartford Inn, the Coach & Horses at Boltonby-Bowland and the Three Fishes at Mitton were all mentioned.

The Parkers Arms at Newton-in-Bowland, which rose to the top of the list in 2023, was overtaken by the Unruly Pig in Suffolk, which took this year’s number one slot.

The Parkers, which took seventh slot this year, has maintained a position on the list for several years and in 2017 was awarded Highest Climber after shooting up 35 places from 48th to 13th. Then in 2020 it sprung into seventh place before climbing to fourth

2021.

THE FOOD HERE IS HONEST, PUTTING FLAVOUR AND EXPERIENCE ABOVE ALL ELSE, WHICH SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE CASE. THIS IS A TRUE GASTROPUB, TAKING PRIDE IN THE LOCAL PRODUCE

This year the judges said: “The food here is honest, putting flavour and experience above all else, which should always be the case. This is a true gastropub, taking pride in the local produce.”

The food at the Freemasons at Wiswell, which came ninth in this year’s list, was likened to the ‘experimental meeting traditional’ and the judges said of chef Steve Smith: “Smith fuses locally sourced ingredients and his love of the classics with wild, sharp world flavours. In the hands of a lesser chef it could so easily go wrong but Smith pulls it off with professionalism and gusto.”

Michelin-star chef Michael Wignall heads up the Angel at Hetton, which came 13th this year. Just over the border in Yorkshire, it has for many years been a popular destination for Ribble Valley foodies.

The Michelin-starred White Swan at Fence, was described as ‘a very special place indeed serving some of the very best food in the region’.

The Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub Awards are voted for by the hospitality industry meaning the highly acclaimed venues on the list have been recognised as being the best in the business by the most influential people.

As well as the core one to 50 list of the best pubs, a 51-100 list was introduced in 2019 which further highlights culinary excellence within the industry. n

THE HALL THAT HAS IT ALL

The finest Georgian house in Lancashire, Lytham Hall, has been enjoying a revival thanks to the dedication of managers Paul and Peter and their loyal team. Alma Stewart discovers what makes this spectacular site so special

Paul Lomax and Peter Antony have been at the helm of Lytham Hall for more than eight years. When they were first approached to advise on how to breathe more life into the Grade I listed building and 78 acres of parkland, the Hall was down on its luck and had just lost a major National Lottery bid.

“We had always loved the Hall and had helped raise money for it in the past,” said Paul. “As Peter and I had ran so many hospitality venues, the then CEO approached us for our recommendations and we prepared a 15-page dossier of how the Hall and grounds could be revamped. On the strength of this, we were offered the positions of hospitality and catering managers.”

Once the ancestral home of the colourful Clifton Family, the site’s history spans across four centuries. It dates back to the 12th century when it was home to a priory of Benedictine monks. Sir Cuthbert Clifton built a Jacobean manor house on this plot in 1606. Much of the Jacobean building still exists. In 1752 Thomas Clifton commissioned John Carr of

ONCE THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE COLOURFUL CLIFTON FAMILY, THE SITE’S HISTORY SPANS ACROSS FOUR CENTURIES

Paul, an actor by trade, is originally from Wigan and Peter, a professional singer, from Oldham. The pair have family the area and got to know the Fylde Coast well particularly as Peter worked on the Blackpool entertainment circuit. “We love Lytham,” Paul added. “We couldn’t imagine not living near the sea now.”

One of the first changes was providing private dining in the boardroom to boost funds for the charity, particularly following the loss of the Lottery bid. A number of notable events have been held on the grounds with the generous support of local music promoters, Cuffe and Taylor.

When the position of general manager and assistant general manager became available, Peter and Paul jumped at the chance: “We were tasked with being in charge of the 78 acre site – to preserve its history and work on conservation. It was a huge learning curve. Peter had studied horticulture at Myerscough College and also ran his own grounds firm. He always had that interest which of course is ideal for our plans for the grounds,” Paul explained.

Some of the first tasks to tackle were some problem drains and leaking roofs. Repairs were funded by small grants and fundraising. The plan was then to restore each room, one at a time. “One positive thing about losing the initial Lottery bid is that were no longer tied to their constraints of commissioning contractors from outside the area,” Paul continued. “We are delighted to have local, specialist contractors on board who restore the hall using historic materials – it’s great to watch such skill.”

The improvements across the site have been astounding. The gate houses have been converted into self-catering accommodation, there is now the Garden Hub offering a host of beautiful species to purchase. Elsewhere, you can find the antiques and reclamation centre, the animal hub with pigs, rabbits and goats. The Lytham Hall Shop offers lots of exclusive branded produce, gifts and souvenirs.

York to build the fine Palladian house which we see today.

Visitors can enjoy one of the fabulous Georgian afternoon teas served at ‘Lilibet’s’ in the stunning ambience of Lytham Hall’s library. The Lytham Hall Café, wherever possible, uses locally sourced ingredients in the delicious homemade food. Peter’s daughter is head chef here, helping deliver a real family feel. The Kitchen Garden provides seasonal salad and vegetables year-round. Dog walkers will be happy to know that well behaved dogs are welcome to use the café.

Outside, a formal Italianate parterre garden has been created to mimic the garden which would have been here before. The Mount is accessible through new steps – this area has become a favourite with visitors. The driveway has also been repaired thanks to a grant from Fylde Borough Council, which has eradicated a number of potholes.

OUR TEAM HERE ARE AMAZING AND WE COULDN’T HAVE ACHIEVED WHAT WE HAVE WITHOUT THEM

Of course, this work would not be possible without the dedication of the 300 volunteers who pitch in to help: “The Hall was closed off for 30 years when the Guardian owned it. There are generations of Fylde folk who missed out on knowing and using this place so now it’s all about including our local community as much as we can. These days you’ll see many local people taking their dogs for a walk or meeting friends for coffee. Our team here are amazing and we couldn’t have achieved what we have without them. Lytham Hall really does get under your skin.”

There are many reasons to discover the fantastic facilities in 2024. The full event schedule includes outdoor theatre, flower festival, motor shows, workshops and even the Lytham Hall Proms 2024 which will take place on August 25th. Tours of the Hall run throughout the year but visitors are welcome to just explore the grounds and enjoy the most pleasant surroundings.

With future works on the agenda including converting the stables, the creating of more formal gardens to include a wisteria arch, a David Austen rose garden with a royal connection and the possibility of a natural children’s playground, the plans are exciting. The addition of a new head gardener and CEO add to the Hall’s future getting even brighter. n
